I don’t expect to see a quick resolution to this. If anything, I think it might be of more assurance to the market if both parties announced that they would not make any deal until after Jan 1st, with the final deal set to take effect retroactively. Avoid the pressure of a deadline, the pressure of a market scared witless that nothing will be accomplished, and also the pressure by the party faithful on both sides not to waver under the pressure of the first two.

I don’t agree. A quick resolution is the only likely near-term resolution. Anything else ends with the the bases of both parties forcing a stalemate, neither side able to move for fear of an enraged base.
