Internet Explorer 8 Released

Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 11:48 am PDT

Microsoft released version 8 of their web browser today: Internet Explorer 8: Home page. I haven’t installed it yet, so this may not be entirely fair, but based on past experience developing web software for Internet Explorer I admit to feeling a sense of dread.

Tech Note: IE6 Needs an Exorcism

Mon, Oct 6, 2008 at 2:32 pm PDT

If you’re using Internet Explorer version 6, you may have noticed the left sidebar seemingly disappearing. It wasn’t really disappearing, it was being pushed down to the bottom of the page when the “Top Rated Links” area opened up. The reason: without getting too technical, Internet Explorer is simply the ...

Tech Note: Vista Login Problem?

Fri, Sep 12, 2008 at 12:53 pm PDT

Several readers have emailed lately to say they’re having problems with the login form, using Windows Vista and Internet Explorer 7. I don’t have Vista installed here yet (still using XP - OEM copy of Vista on the way, though), so I’m opening a thread for comments to discuss the ...

Sun, Aug 3, 2008 at 11:25 am PDT

SANS has some details on the reason for that Site Meter problem that blocked out Internet Explorer from many sites: We received several reports (thanks Thanos and Jim) of sites which use the Sitemeter visitor counter that were no longer loading as of last night for users with Internet ...

Site Meter Still Crashing Internet Explorer - Update: Now Fixed

Sat, Aug 2, 2008 at 10:46 am PDT

What’s up with Site Meter? We first reported the problem last night, but today their code still causes Internet Explorer 7 to throw an “Operation aborted” error. There are a lot of sites affected by this; did they just release a buggy update and go on a long weekend vacation? ...

A Big IE7 Problem on the Web - Update: Sitemeter Responsible

Fri, Aug 1, 2008 at 6:56 pm PDT

I’ve confirmed that there’s some kind of problem on the Internet, that only seems to affect users of the Internet Explorer 7 web browser. Attempting to browse to many sites results in an ‘Operation Aborted’ error. No information about the problem elsewhere yet ... stay tuned. UPDATE at 8/1/08 7:20:27 ...

Tech Note: Internet Explorer 'Adjustments'

Mon, May 26, 2008 at 6:39 pm PDT

Actually, they’re “regressions,” not “adjustments.” Versions 6 and 7 of Internet Explorer have bugs that prevent our new comment reporting and user profile features from working correctly; it appears that these versions of IE get very cranky if you try to create an IFRAME via Javascript that fills the entire ...

The Mother of All Geekwars

Mon, Mar 17, 2008 at 7:58 pm PDT

I was slightly ahead of the curve in my little rave against Internet Explorer 8 the other day, but now there’s a major developer war brewing over Microsoft’s “ultra standards compliant” web browser: Martian Headsets - Joel on Software.

IE8: A Mess

Thu, Mar 6, 2008 at 9:14 pm PST

Well, I installed the beta version of Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 8, touted as the most compatible version of IE yet, and LGF—which works almost identically in all other major browsers—is almost completely broken in this new “ultra-compatible” version of Microsoft’s hellish web-developer torture device: Internet Explorer 8 Readiness Toolkit. ...

Technical Note: Speed Improvements, Bug Fixes

Tue, Jan 15, 2008 at 5:19 pm PST

A very irritating bug reported by several readers has bitten the dust tonight. I’m surprised more people didn’t complain about it, because it affected Internet Explorer 7 (but not 6, oddly enough!): if you showed the top rated links, the area opened correctly and slid down like it’s supposed to, ...

Technical Note: Spinoff Links vs. IE6

Fri, Jan 11, 2008 at 5:22 pm PST

If you’re using Internet Explorer version 6, and you’ve been having problems with our spinoff links feature, I’m glad to announce that those IE6-related problems are now mostly debugged. For the techies amongst us, the main reason for the problems was IE6’s annoying lack of support for the “selected” attribute ...
