Several KFC restaurants in Australia have removed bacon from their menus, to avoid offending Muslims: No pigging out at KFC. (Hat tip: Israellycool.)

FOUR KFC restaurants have taken bacon off the menu in favour of Muslim-friendly products.

The Endeavour Hills, Fawkner, Keilor Downs and Flemington KFC outlets have all dumped bacon from fillet burgers.

At Endeavour Hills, “sold-out” stickers have been placed over bacon products on its drive-through menu.

Customers are offered alternatives such as cheese or pineapple.

But Australian Muslims should not be taken in by the schemes of the infidel Colonel:

But the human rights co-ordinator for the Islamic Council of Victoria, Bilal Cleland, warned KFC’s menu may not in fact be halal.

“We hope that people are not taken in by this scheme. Just because you take the bacon out of the burgers doesn’t make the food halal,” he said.

“There has to be authentic certification that the food is halal and I haven’t seen any evidence of that.”

He said that all the meat, including chicken, must be certified as halal before it was acceptable to Muslims.

I didn't know KFC served anything with bacon in it. It's been awhile since I dined with the Colonel though. Here in Louisiana, Popeye's rules the roost (no pun intended).

So is KFC bending to PC pressure, or just trying to make a quick buck off Muslim chicken connoiseurs?

What? Muslims can't even be in the same building as a piece of bacon now? They might get accidentally cross-contaminated or smell evil pig grease fumes in the parking lot? Oh, we can't have that, now can we?

Dhimmi dummies. I can understand labelling things so people with religious eating restrictions will know what's what. Not too long ago, McDonalds got it trouble with Hindus for not disclosing that their fries were still cooked in beef tallow. But taking a food item off the menu to kow-tow to Muslim sensibilites seems entirely over the top. What next? Fry cooks in burkas? Closed for Ramadan? Or how about "No Jews Allowed"?

11 Thom  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 8:37:09am

It's an American fast food chain. Don't eat there if it doesn't meet your religious requirements. Are any Jewish groups up in arms because it's not kosher? Are the Buddhists pissing and moaning because they serve meat? Are the Hindus protesting the abuse of cows?

By G-d, I truly hate these people.

12 V the K  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 8:37:57am

Dennis Prager's comment that radical secularism and radical Islam were two sides of the same coin sent Andrew Sullivan (and probably others) into predictable Crazy Old Coot-type rants, but this article does kind of illustrate something.

Gay marriage will probably come about because the people who want it really want it. Whereas most people who oppose it don't oppose it enough to take time off work and fight to resist it.

In the same way, the Islamists really, really want to impose their ways on other cultures. And the cultures they are pushing against don't want to accept the ways of the Islamists, but are too lazy or too cowed to actually resist its imposition in any meaningful way.

The chicken thing illustrates this point. Radical Islamists will fight and push and threaten and demonstrate to get their dietary laws imposed, whereas most westerners would feel silly getting worked up over the menu at a fast food restaurant.

Bacon, women driving, it's always something.

What is it with bacon though? I love bacon. In fact, this is making me kinda hungry.

14 BPP  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 8:38:47am

This seems to me to be not dhimmitude but capitalism. Obviously KFC thinks that it has little to lose and much to gain by being Muslim-friendly. It's the same as American food companies going to the bother of getting the U or K kosher symbol on their packaging.

If Aussies start demonstrating for their bacon, then KFC will rethink.

This one seems to me to be no biggie.

They should change their name to Kuffar Fried Chicken with a logo featuring the head of Ariel Sharon (complete with goatee & spectacles) in a string-tie and white jacket...then see if any reps from the RoP want to eat there.

There's a difference between being "Muslim-friendly" and allowing a particular people to dictate the terms for everyone else. If they don't like the bacon, they can eat elsewhere. You don't see KFC using kosher chickens, hiring a moshgiach and opening for business in Borough Park, lucrative though it might be. There's capitalism, and then there's capitulation.

18 IowaInfidel  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 8:44:13am

Recently, I picked up "Militant Islam Reaches America" by Daniel Pipes. This is something he warns about. A gradual evolution to Islam perpetrated by innocuous special interest groups.

Give a little here, give a little there, and pretty soon - guess what?! Hey, what's that mosque doing there where my church used to be? Why are all the woman-folk all covered up like that? Why is it I need to pray 5 times a day and face that-a-way when I do?

It's the same as American food companies going to the bother of getting the U or K kosher symbol on their packaging.

No, it absolutely is NOT the same. Product approval and labeling is one thing, but here a freedom to choose was removed ("sold-out” stickers) from a micro-population of fast-food consumers. Multiply this many times over and you have a substantial restriction on a broad population.

The choice of bacon was removed. One tiny-weenie skootch of the camel's nose just occurred.

It is capitalism at work--these franchises made a business decision to capitulate to the Muslim demands, and time will tell whether it was a wise business decision. But it's in no way similar to a business getting its food labled as Kosher. Now if they had totally pulled a product because of Jewish lobbying, that would be different, but I only know of one religion with the arrogance & nerve for that...

If I don't want pancakes that taste like cheeseburgers and skillets, I don't go to Denny's (worked my way through college as a waitress there, and I WON'T eat there now).

I read the article and it seems that Christians are protesting. So my guess is that KFC will probably drop the scheme.

If I'm the KFC manager, I'm thinking about this purely in terms of dollars and cents. Will I gain more Muslim customers or lose more Christian customers? Will I get positive PR or negative PR. Given the tone of the article, I'm guessing its pretty negative PR now.

I am also quite sure that KFC, like other fast food chains, does not open up in Borough Park not because they don't want to cater to local tastes, but rather because they have run the numbers and decided they will not recoup the extra expense of being certified kosher. How many Hassids are you likely to see at a KFC anyway?

That's business.

36 BH  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 8:59:46am

I'm inclined to agree that this is a simple business decision. If they decide not to sell it that is their choice, and whether it was a good choice will be determined by sales.

On the other hand, if Australian KFCs are getting their bacon from local farmers this could come back and bite 'em in the a$$, 'cuz now they're messing with the Australian economy.

37 ouizel  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 9:00:00am

38 Wondermutt  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 9:00:17am

39 Beth  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 9:00:23am

I'm confused... since when does KFC have bacon on the menu to begin with? OR burgers, for that matter? I thought the "C" stood for "chicken". I was just in a KFC a week ago.

I think it's horrible that they caved. There are so many different types of fast food places. Why can't someone make a halal restaurant? In the right areas, they could make a fortune. just a thought...

How much you want to bet the announcement will be disappointing and 'geeky'.

I was watching a documentary about mission control during the moon landing, and it struck me how different one group of men was compared to their present day contemporaries.

This is the concern I keep trying to give voice to. Under Sharia that which is not allowed to the "faithful" is forbidden to all. In essence there is no requirement to keep faithul because you really have no choice. If Muslims don't like bacon, they shouldn't eat it.

If you as a store owner want to cater to them, get some of your entrees properly certified. But if it makes them get a happy that you removed a choice that non-Muslims might want to appeal to Muslims, then screw you and screw any of them that feel that way.

71 Andrew K  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 9:30:08am

I was inclined at first to think of this as an accomodation to local culture. It only makes business sense to sell what people want to eat. If local culture is overwhelmingly Islamic then it makes sense to sell food that Muslims can eat. The same goes if you're in Israel. No pork.

However, this is Australia. I am not certain but I don't think there are that many overwhelmingly Muslim neighborhoods in that country. If is a case of one individual KFC franchise accomodating the culture of the surrounding neighborhood, resulting in a proportional increase in sales, then I'm ok with deleting bacon from the menu. If KFC is kowtowing to a small, vocal Muslim group, then I call dhimmitude and screw both KFC and the Muslim group trying to enforce its dietary restrictions on everyone else. Let them cook for themselves.

Since it wasn't clear from the story if it was the former or the latter case, I reserve judgement.

Sounds like in an effort to appeal to local tastes that 7-11 put something on the menu. It didn't remove an item because it caused religious offense. Apologies if this was already posted: Israel nabs 'terror kids'

March 1, 2004 -- JERUSALEM - Israeli authorities arrested three Palestinian boys, ages 12, 13 and 15, who were on their way to attack Israeli civilians with homemade guns - and the young age of the would-be terrorists shocked people on both sides of the bitter conflict.
The parents of the boys condemned Palestinian terror groups for recruiting the children, and other Palestinians voiced outrage that such young children would be involved in what would almost certainly have been a suicide mission.

Israeli police arrested the boys Thursday at a checkpoint.

The boys, from the West Bank village of Tubas, near Nablus, told authorities they planned to shoot people in the Israeli city of Afula.

The youths left a note at home saying they were angry over the fence Israel is building to close off the West Bank.

An (apparently) muslim busboy walked up to them and said, "The meat sauce has pork in it." The couple promptly changed their order. Didn't know that about the ol' Olive Gardens meat sauce.

I was in Wendy’s not long ago and a Southeast Asian family came in, they appeared to be Muslim, what with the mother and teenage daughter both wearing hijabs and all, so after the obligatory joke to my wife about heading for the exits before they ‘splode, next thing I said to her was, “Isn’t Wendy’s like the bacon fast food king with their bacon cheese burgers, bacon stuffed potatoes, bacon milkshakes, etc? So, just Muslim enough to wear the hijab, not Muslim enough to eat halal, eh, nod, nod, wink, wink?”

ISLAMABAD, December 15 (Online): A newly Christian turned Muslim Canadian woman Cindy May Falloon has termed all the allegations against the religion of Islam as baseless and has said that this is the only religion which gives the message of peace and harmony.

I'd be glad not to receive such a message.

OT - via Jonah Goldberg at The Corner:

MGM Promises that Agent Cody Banks 2: Destination London Could be the most Anti-Semitic Movie in History!

Spurred by the success of Mel Gibson's recent movie "The Passion of Christ" studios have begun to target the massive audience who apparently desire to see movies which are accused of being anti-semitic. Through six days in theatres Mel Gibson's "Passion of Christ" has grossed over $125 million. MGM has jumped on the band wagon first and completely re-edited and over-dubbed "Cody Banks II: Destination London".

"We have recut our movie to see just how anti-semitic we can get...allegedly." MGM President Larry Gleason stated, "The audience is there and we just have to give them what they want." In the original script, teen spy Cody Banks, was sent by the CIA to London to recover a stolen mind-control device. In the new ending, he goes to Jerusalem to take on the evil Knesset who are secretly controlling the United States government and subjugating innocent Palestinians to death and torture. The studio has also redubbed the movie so that Frankie Muniz's character has a codename of Adolph. And, in a final surprise twist, Agent Banks discovers that Israeli spies were actually the cause of September 11th. "Is it anti-semetic?" Gleason asked, "I think that's an answer only an audience of 40 million ticket buyers could decide."

You'll have to scroll down to the blogger's Monday entries.

MacDonald's and burger king, with a very few excepted restaurants, are absolutely kosher in Israel. ( the downtown Jerusalem branch , and the moshav branches aren't kosher but mevasseret and the central bus station are) which means no cheeseburgers, no pork products, and kosher meat. big change from when i first when i first moved to Israel we had, are you ready? MacDavids, ( which McDonalds sued over thename) and burger ranch.( still around).. both kosher.
MacDonald's even makes a special Passover( pesach) burger, which is pretty amazing( in Israel, almost every restaurant is either made stringently kosher for Passover, or closes down for the festival... you can than see how inventive we can be with matzos!) MacDonald's has a pesach burger,, a hamburger (one size only) served on a " bun" which is actually made out of matzo meal and egg, and is kosher for pesach.. its also abysmally bad, but unique!
we did have kentucky fried here, also kosher, but it was very expensive and bad, and uneeded in a nation of fantastic chicken shnitzle cookers.( shnitzle is a freid and bredded chicken cutlet, a bit of a national dish... ) however, allof this kosher stuff is in the jewish state, where the majority of resetraunts ar ekosher, and either mil or meat.
why australia need this is another question all together. and why a country with food as good as mine needs burger ranch is also a question to be pondered.
at least let the world share the macdonlads " pesach burger" for culltural diversity.
( how can the work mot see the absolute cuteness in a coutnry that makes passover burgers? i love it! another reason for evryone to visit, at least once!)

we had one in quriat ono, ( near where i served in the army) and my commander, who was very cool , and plus had an ancient volkswagon bug, ( even cooler) would pile about 8 of us into the car to go to burger ranch. what a treat! (wed all have to duck though so we wouldnt get into trouble for car piling )
we always did that on sundays, when it was loof or eggs for lunch on base. they were delicious!

#72 Rayra 3/2/2004 11:31AM PST

Fuck that. If you DON'T want bacon, go elsewhere. Don't remove MY choices, for the ravings of a group of fundamentalists.

Why don't you just go elsewhere? They're not "your" choices; they're the choices provided to you by the restaurant. KFC isn't obligated to provide you with non-halal fast food. If (e.g.)Taco Bueno took the lard out of their beans to attract vegetarians to their restaurants, would you be so upset?

As a vegetarian for practically all of my adult life, I can't eat most items at most fast food restaurants. What this means is those restaurants that do make an effort to provide vegetarian choices beyond wilted salads gain almost all of my fast food expenditures, and the lion's share of the fast food expenditures of other vegetarians. It's good business sense for these restaurants, whereas it may not be good sense for other restaurants to provide a selection of vegetarian foods.

To everyone who is upset -- the free market will sort it all out. If these KFCs net out better than before, will you complain that they made a buck selling food to Muslims? (Isn't that part of what we like about Western society?) If they lose out, that'll solve the problem anyway. If it bothers you so much, send a letter complaining about the policy. (Don't know much about Antipodean law but in the US I imagine that businesses would be reluctant to act on boycotts based a refusal to patronize a business meeting a religious requirement -- say you think the bacon is vital instead.)

I don't think people here are upset that KFC stopped serving bacon. I never knew that KFC ever served bacon and I see that others here didn't know it either. I think people are upset at the way Muslims are growing and this decision by KFC is a responce to that.

Are there really so many muslims in Australia that this decision by KFC can be profitable? To me that's scary. I think that's the real problem.

My Democrat party spam is escalating! Still no clue how I got on the list, having never ever voted for one...it's interesting though. They've brought out the biggest gun!

A Special Message From President Bill Clinton

Dear Evariste,

Finally, the moment we've waited for has arrived.

The 2004 election year has officially begun and, with it, comes our opportunity to assert Democratic ideals in a national campaign. This is our chance to boldly and decisively move America in a new direction.

Let's make the most of it. Let's use every day we have -- and every ounce of energy we can muster -- to win a decisive victory for the Democratic Party -- and America -- this November.

As I write, the contest for the Democratic presidential nomination is entering its most intensive stage. Some of us have chosen to focus all of our attention on preparing the Party for November, on setting the stage for our eventual nominee's success. Others are enthusiastically backing one of the many excellent candidates who have stepped forward.

Whichever path you personally have taken, it is vitally important that you immediately lend your financial support to the critical next phase of the Democratic National Committee's 2004 Victory Action Plan.

Every Democrat from every corner of our Party has to step forward right now and help. There can be no waiting, no hesitation, no thinking that preparing for the general election is something we can get around to once we know who will be our nominee.

I'll tell you this: The Republican National Committee isn't waiting. They're stockpiling tens of millions of dollars with only one purpose in mind: to deliver a devastating political blow to our nominee as soon as one is chosen.

It's the only way they can win -- and we cannot let them get away with it. Our Republican opponents know that they can't possibly succeed if they run on their record. They'd be trying to defend the indefensible.

They can't defend a relentless obsession with tax cuts for the wealthy during an administration with the worst economic record since Herbert Hoover. They can't explain environmental policies that would give polluters more freedom to dirty our air and timber companies more opportunity to ravage the last roadless areas in our national forests.

They can't defend their senseless attacks on civil liberties, needless provocations on civil rights, and dangerous tactics in foreign policy.

They can't defend the many ways they have moved America in the wrong direction and, chances are, they won't try to. Instead they'll go on the attack, tearing down our candidate from day one.

It's our job to help our presidential candidate and other Democrats caught up in tight races fight their way through to victory. We've got to be with them every step of the way, unfailing in our loyalty, unyielding in our determination.

Believe me, we have a powerful story to tell in this election -- and, if you and other key Democratic Party supporters stand by our candidates, we'll get that story out to voters all across America -- and we'll win.

But it won't be easy. The Republicans will have over a half a billion dollars at their disposal -- more money than any presidential campaign in history -- and a willingness to do whatever it takes to prevail.

Let's show them what we're made of -- demonstrate how a Party acts when it has the strength of its convictions.

They'll try to win by disguising their ideology and intentions. But we'll carry the day by proclaiming our principles and making it crystal clear where we intend to lead America.

They'll try to win by avoiding the truth. But we'll shout it from the rooftops.

I know you have done a great deal already to support our Party as we prepare for one of the most critical elections in history. But, I urge you to get our 2004 efforts off to a strong start by sending an immediate donation in as generous an amount as you can possibly afford.

We need your energy, your spirit, your determination -- and your financial support. Please respond as quickly and as generously as you can.

Sincerely,

Bill Clinton

P.S. I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing more heartening to a presidential nominee than to know that committed Democrats have devoted the time, energy and financial resources to prepare for the general election. Your decision to lend critical support in early 2004 is absolutely essential to our success in November.

OT -- Hard Facts Lacking in Europe's Anti-Semitism Drive

PARIS (Reuters) - Determining the real state of anti-Semitic violence in Europe is extremely difficult because few states collect enough data about it, the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) said Tuesday.

The lack of sufficient data also makes it difficult to say whether some recent attacks reflect a "new anti-Semitism" from Muslims in Europe protesting against Israel's policies toward Palestinians, ECRI chairman Michael Head said.

Must have been just another Jewish conspiracy I guess.

163 Stormi, catchin' up  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 11:37:34am

I used to live in Sydney, in the Arncliffe suburb, which, as it happens, has the highest concentration of Muslims in the country, mostly Lebanese. The biggest mosque on the continent was a block down and around the corner from my house. I don't recall any fast food places, to get things like that you had to go into the city, or to the shopping center in Kogarah.

What I do remember were a whole bunch of little places, like a... well, I don't know if deli was the right word for it, but it was a place that did sandwiches and cold salads, and their sandwiches were on this big flat Lebanese bread, and rolled up. And what seemed like a million small Indian eateries, six or eight tables and a take-away window. The Indians all seemed to live elsewhere, but opened their restaurants in Arncliffe.

I used to love living there, I thought it was so wonderful, that Australia was the most magical place, and that my little house was the best house in the world, and that the worst thing that could happen in my neighborhood would be getting run over by one of the crazy Lebanese drivers if I was out walking after dark. But it's been almost ten years, and I honestly don't know if you could pay me enough money to live there again. Not now, not anymore.

It kind of feels to me, the way a Portuguese friend of mine who grew up in Angola described. Angola was his home, and now his home's been changed forever by war, and he can't ever go home again. It's really sad.

There is some kind of law against raising pigs on Israeli soil. But if I'm not mistaken, Mizrah gets around that by raising them on raised wooden planks. They don't actually touch the soil.
Jews can solve any halachic problem creatively.
It reminds me of a joke where a Hasid wants to take a taxi on a hot summer day. Problem is its Saturday. So like Moses parted the red sea, he raises his hands and parts the sabbath and takes an airconditioned taxi in the middle.

Burger King Changes Ad After Muslims Complain

A Muslim character named Rasheed will no longer be promoting Burger King's bacon-cheddar sandwich after an Islamic group complained to the fast food chain.

The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently sent a letter to Burger King after several Muslims complained upon hearing the bacon-cheddar radio commercial. In the ad Rasheed reads a poem listing the virtues of the sandwich and greets others as "brothers and sisters."

"They were offended that someone with a Muslim name would be praising a sandwich that contains pork," said Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for CAIR. Muslims are forbidden by their religion from eating pork.

CAIR said that Burger King agreed to take the ad off the air. But a Burger King spokesman, Rob Doughty said, "All we agreed to was to change the name of the character." Doughty also defended the use of the name Rasheed, saying it was "not necessarily Muslim, but also African-American."

Which thread is that from?

187 amir  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 11:59:24am

Lizzy, Colt

Looks like the planks are a myth, I just did a search on Google.

Though tourists and many Israelis themselves are under the impression that pigs are absent or hard to find in Israel, there are actually thousands of pink porkers across the land.

Some 25 pig farms are deemed legal, according to a 1963 law that holds pigs in Israel can be raised for scientific research or in designated areas, primarily Christian villages.

Kibbutz Lahav in the Negev is the only known and legal pig farm in a Jewish village - it transformed its pens into the Institute of Animal Research the same year as the new legislation. Even though the hogs that don't make it to the laboratories are apparently sold for meat production, Orthodox legislators have been unsuccessful in their quest to close the pens, after they tried and failed to find unethical business practices. (Lahav did not return calls or answer e-mailed questions about its research.)

There is no official data, but it is suspected by industry insiders that at least a couple of owners of pig pens in Christian villages are Jews trying to keep their identities under wraps.

Kibbutz Mizra in the Jezreel Valley stopped raising pigs years ago, but is infamous as the largest pork-product factory in a Jewish-Israeli village.

The Arby's chain has a quite tasty Chicken Bacon & Swiss sandwich as well as a Chicken Cordon Bleu (with ham instead of bacon). Both are quite tasty. Seems to me that the Aussies might have has a similar sandwich offering. Pisses me off that the chain has caved in to the mooners and has changed the name to Kitchen Fresh Chicken (we used to stop at the original KFC in Berea, KY on our trips from Tennessee to Ohio back in the late '60's).

Y'know why you don't see many Muslims working in a fast food restaraunt? Everytime the front line hollers "Buns up!", they think it is a call to prayer. (Ex-Mickey Dee's grill/buns/maintenance guy here...)

Hearing that crap from Cindy May, proves to me they spelled her last name wrong, it is Buffoon...or from the looks of her, Balloon (as in "hot air" or "big as an air-defense..."

Dennis Prager's comment that radical secularism and radical Islam were two sides of the same coin sent Andrew Sullivan (and probably others) into predictable Crazy Old Coot-type rants, but this article does kind of illustrate something.

Well, I went and read the Dennis Prager column to which Andrew Sullivan was objecting, and if you'll permit me to indulge in some Crazy Old Cootism:

HOLY SHEEE-YIT, DENNIS PRAGER IS A NUTBALL

Prager's column linked above is a perfect illustration of why "idiotarian" is a non-partisan term, because he indulges in exactly the same sort of dumb-fuck rhetorical devices that LLL writers use, only with a conservative [Judeo-]Christian slant. Leftist idiots, for example, are prone to ominous ramblings about how Bush, Cheney, and Ashcroft are going to turn America into a fundamentalist Christian dystopia any day now. Prager, coming from the right, forecasts an equally plausible future in which

any media -- films, advertisements, greeting cards -- that only depict married couples as a woman and a man will be considered discriminatory and probably be sued.

...and it gets SCARIER...

those religious groups that only marry men [to] women will be deemed beyond the pale, marginalized and ostracized

Sheesh. He gets paid for this bilge?

The commies have tried again to make a mess, we will have to start all the story from zero again:

(FOX NEWS)

The Senate voted 90-8 to defeat the bill that would deny victims the opportunity to sue gunmakers and dealers when their products are used in a crime.

WHY ? BECAUSE:

The vote followed a 52-47 vote to attach an amendment that would have renewed for 10 years the assault weapons ban (search) set to expire this year. The Senate also voted 53-46 to require background checks (search) of purchasers buying guns at private shows.
Democratic presidential contenders John KERRY (search) of Massachusetts and John Edwards (search) of North Carolina broke away from the Super Tuesday campaign trail TO CAST VOTES— their first of the year. Both voted for the renewal and the background checks.

FOLKS, REMEMBER THAT, NEXT NOVEMBER.
THEY WANT TO DISARM US WHEN WE ARE INVADED AND AT WAR.

Which got me thinking. What if I wrote this?

There is some kind of law against killing people on American soil.

What, then, would you say? Would you say it would infuriate you, because making murder illegal is bending to the wishes of a religious minority on morality matters?

Israel was founded as a JEWISH state, and as a free state, they are pretty much allowed to make whatever laws they damned well please. I mean jeez, in America, the freest nation on earth, in many places it's illegal to smoke. I would say that's more of an infringement on somebody's liberty than not being allowed to raise pigs. What the hell kind of market do you really think there is for pork in Israel, anyway? I'm sure Israel's pork needs are adequately met, for those who wish for pork.

Israeli police said they foiled a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv after cordoning off the main bus station. "A terror attack was prevented today in Tel Aviv," a police spokesman said, adding a court issued a gag order on the details.

One of the things I love most about living in a fairly big city is there are plenty of great food choices not involving fast food or chain restaurants. It seems like in the newer suburb towns, if you don't want KFC or McD's, you're other choices are Fridays & Applebees. I don't know when the last time I went to McD's was, and there's one two blocks from my house.

242 Throbert McGee  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 12:45:26pm

Here's an old Jerusalem Post story about bomb-sniffing pigs in Israel. The article notes:

According to Jewish law, the pig is no more treif (non-kosher) than a shrimp or a rabbit. But in Jewish awareness, swine draw particular revulsion. The religiously observant have for ages fought to keep pigs out of the Holy Land. There were even laws passed against raising pigs in Israel, something that was never passed against horses, dogs, or camels, which are also treif.

But Kibbutz Lahav, from the staunchly secular Hashomer Hatzair movement, found a loophole in the law. Dr. Dan Ratner, an expert in pig breeding and a geneticist, helped found the Israel Institute for Animal Studies.

"There was a law passed in 1963 banning pig farming in Israel. All the kibbutzim stopped raising pigs. But the law allowed pigs to be raised for research purposes. Any surplus pigs were allowed to be slaughtered," Ratner says.

Surplus?

"Oh we have thousands of surplus pigs every season," he says with a wink, adding that the slaughterhouse is one of the most economically stable kibbutz endeavors.

Then when I was in Iquitos my friend and I went a few times to the "soup lady": we just went to her house, she had a different soup every day, and we gave her the equivalent of $1.70 or so.

That is one of the joys of traveling in the developing world: you often have to eat off the beaten path, because there is no KFC or McDonald's out there.

What's the name of that famous rib joint in Chicago? There was even a M.A.S.H. tv show about it.

264 Nancy  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 1:04:25pm

Sure, fast food chains do adapt to the regional food customs. In Paris one can get wine at MacDonalds and in Munich beer. In the usual paper cup I might add!

I doubt that "no bacon" reflects the regional cuisine of Australia.

I fail to see the logic how the KFC in Australia is making a business decision by removing bacon from the menu because 1. Muslims still wouldn't go if the products were not certified and 2. for it to be a business decision would have to mean a majority of the clientele would be Muslim.

I didn't know they had bacon on the menu either.

Calcutta: population ~12 million, and I don't recall a single McDonald's!

Iquitos: no chains at all, but smack downtown is a contrived sock-hop type burger joint that is a gringo trap par excellence. It is not bad (good for a USA "sanity check" if you know what I mean), but overpriced.

Also in Calcutta, the internet cafe ran the equivalent of $0.30 per hour; the connection was slow (but fine for just e-mailing home) but I would have paid just for the air conditioning there!

Anyway, the truth is you can get anything you want in Israel (even shrimp).

I ate the best Dim Sum ever in TA. There is a sushi restaurant where my daughter lives and it is not only authentic but one of the best I have eaten in. To date I had the best ever most delicately delicious Foie Gras in my whole life at a small bistro in middle Israel. I love good places to eat (I am a bit of a foodie) and Israel has some of the best most innovative restaurants with talented new chefs. Anything you want to eat from the most sophisticated to the sublime is available.

And for cheese there is a moshav in the north that wins hands down with goat cheese to the likes of anything I have ever eaten.

As for pork, in the north of Israel there are massive amounts of wild boar. Many people hunt them (on the sly) and cook them on a spit same as a whole pig. From Yaffo to Haifa there are more and more non kosher butchers who cater to the other 'white meat.'

hmm. now I have made myself hungry. Guess I will go cook dinner.

Has anyone failed to see the most obvious solution for a believing Muslim: open your own halal restaurant! That's one of the great things about the free market: you recognize a need for a service or product in a given area and time, then you fill it and make a profit. The bonus is that the Muslims would be re-investing in their own community, rather than patronizing a largely faceless multinational entity.

But easier just to whine and wait for someone ese to vhange than actually to do something yourslef about it. . . .

The Anchorage became Deckhand Central, because Martha allowed us to supply our own fish filets (which I'm sure was illegal as hell) for fish & chips. She'd batter & deep fry the fish, and give us a mess of fries & a soda for a buck & a quarter.

Sea bass, red snapper, the occasional salmon, tuna in el nino years, the odd shark... probably 80% of our meals were compliments of Martha. And I can't recall ever tiring of it.

FWIW, the fish were bled & never touched the ground...

In any case, the Anglosphere should turn off the tap on some of these immigrants. Adding regional foods to a menu is OK, but taking things off, especially a Western staple such as bacon, for some anal religious minority is just idiotic.

Did they think actually they were helping things? The 'halal' comment makes it apparent that, by giving them encouragement, they probably just made it worse!

That's almost like people in an all ranching area like South Texas asking all restaurants to take chicken off their menus because it offends them or something.

Too much is now at stake for all concerned for any further backsliding.

None of the pols here in the US have made any hostile noises toward the Islamists yet, but the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq are both going to intensify--with the spring offensive in Afghanistan and the June transfer of power in Iraq. Interesting article in the NYT Review of Books.

Unfortunately, the authors take a long and guilt-ridden trail to get to this paragraph near the end:

[Link: www.nybooks.com...]

"The other intellectual trap to avoid is the paralysis of colonial guilt. It should be repeated: European and American histories are stained with blood, and Western imperialism did much damage. But to be conscious of that does not mean we should be complacent about the brutality taking place in former colonies now. On the contrary, it should make us less so. To blame the barbarism of non-Western dictators or the suicidal savagery of religious revolutions on American imperialism, global capitalism, or Israeli expansionism is not only to miss the point; it is precisely an Orientalist form of condescension, as though only Westerners are adult enough to be morally responsible for what they do."

Also unfortunate: they do not go far enough with the above sentiments, and the rest of the article is sometimes weak. Still interesting stuff, and if you just rearrange the ideas... you may draw different (and more correct) LGF lizardoid conclusions.

'Biblical' locust plague threatens Mideast
Ahead of Passover, U.N. agency warns of potential devastation

With the Passover celebration just weeks away, a locust plague of biblical proportions could threaten parts of the Middle East and Africa, according to a United Nations agency.

An outbreak that potentially could darken the sky and consume everything in its path is "in progress on the Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia where swarms are forming," the Rome-based U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said.

Despite intensive control operations, swarms are expected to move into the country's interior where a further generation of breeding could occur in the spring. Some could reach areas in Jordan, southern Iraq and Western Iran later in the spring, the agency said, according to the JTA news service.

The U.N. agency is appealing for $9 million to stave off outbreaks in desert parts of northern and western Africa, including Mali, Chad and Mauritania.

"If control operations have to slow down or be interrupted, more locusts added to those already there could contribute to eventually transforming the current situation into a plague," the organization warned.

According to the book of Exodus, a locust outbreak was one of the 10 plagues inflicted on the Egyptians prior to Israel's flight from captivity, commemorated by Jews and many Christians in the Passover celebration.

"The Bible and talmudic literature describe the plague of locusts as one of the worst visitations to come upon the country," the Encyclopedia Judaica says. "Its gravity and extent varies from time to time."

Another plague of locusts in the Bible was recounted by the prophet Joel, who said they made the fig tree "clean bare; the branches thereof are made white," JTA notes.

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization says the desert locust, a form of grasshopper, can quickly multiply into massive swarms capable of moving hundreds or even thousands of miles.

"When the locusts find ideal conditions in a sequence of seasonal breeding areas, upsurges can develop and lead to rapid multiplication and increasingly large swarms," said the U.N. organization, which has a special Locust Group to coordinate operations against any threat.

"If an upsurge is not controlled, a plague can occur in which swarms invade countries outside the traditional breeding areas," the agency said, according to JTA. "Crop damage by swarms can be devastating."

It's strange the photo would be like that. Was the photo hacked? Is it some type of Al Qaeda code? Could
7-11 and the presence of glasses represent
something?

.

Your ability to excuse the idiocy, hate and intolerance of both Muslim and European is just amazing. You wouldn't think it a big deal if Muslim brown shirts were rounding up Jews in France and Belgium and cramming them in cattle cars.

I think all that European leftist moral relativist crap rubbed off on you while you lived there.

I just can't resist rising to the bait of a post from bigel.

So let me get this straight: because I happen to think that a KFC in Australia taking bacon off its menu is not the end of the world and think it was just a straight business decision that it's probably now regretting, that means I would be OK with a second Holocaust.

This is so loony that it's not worth responding to directly. But then all bigel posts are not meant to be actual arguments that make any sense. They're just incoherent ramblings from a sad soul who likes to prove he can say the most outrageous things. OK you win. You are baaadest boy on this block! We understand you hate Europe. OK - message received. Now go get some help.

#261 logger phd:

That is one of the joys of traveling in the developing world: you often have to eat off the beaten path, because there is no KFC or McDonald's out there.

Actually, there are a fair number of both in the developing world. Not in Iquitos, sure, but certainly in, say, Lima. And the McD's in Lima are actually great (as McD's go), sort of the platonic ideal of McDonald's--spotlessly clean, staffed by smart, friendly kids, no street people sleeping at the tables. Same for KFC. Plus, they serve beer. But if you're really hankerin' for a fast-food burger in Lima (and I know I get that craving sometimes), I recommend the home-grown burger chain "Bembos".

317 Wild Justice  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 2:48:20pm

Back in my younger (and wilder) days I used to date a girl from Fawkner. Don't recall a KFC in that part of the neighborhood; we tended to eat at the local Pizza Hut. This was back in the early 90s and there were no Muslims to speak of in the area that I'm aware of.

My Hawaiian friend has three boys, and one weekend i was looking after them and they kept asking me to make Hawaiian fried rice. The only thing they knew that went into it was Spam.

I don't do Spam, so I put in some chicken instead, figuring that'd be fine. They were lamenting the missing spam. It also could be that my fried rice sucks... or maybe they just really love Spam.

evariste - that BBQ link is great. I smoke alot of meat at my lakehouse near houston. It's always good to find a site with info on how I can hone my technique. I've been a very good cook most of my adult life, but I've become a very adept BBQ'er with my smoker at the lake. You never know what you'll find at LGF. Have a great evening folks. I'm not so fond of barbecue sauce.

Are you sure? Maybe you're just not fond of, say, barbecue sauce from the grocery store? Me neither. It's always a little too sweet, sometimes a lot too sweet, and there's always a nasty chemical preservative flavor.
Barbecue is not grilling, btw. Barbecue is slow-cooking with indirect or radiant heat at low temperatures, with wood smoke for flavor.
You probably aren't so fond of the sweeter tomato-based barbecue sauces; you should look up recipes for Carolina or Jamaica style vinegar-based tangier sauces.

I came on the BBQ/Spam portion of this thread late, so here's my two cents:

-I love Eastern North Carolina BBQ (pulled pork with vinegar-pepper sauce). I love it even more with the tangy mustardy Carolina-style cole slaw (so yellow you might mistake it for scrambled eggs) and cornsticks (deep fried sticks of cornbread somewhat like Italian Breadsticks).

-But for texture, Kansas City BBQ is far and away the best. Nothing like the delicious contrast between tender and juicy and the utterly perfect crispness of the "burnt ends".

-South Carolina BBQ, with its mustard/molasses sauce is unique and interesting.

-Spam is very popular in the Philippines.

I would have to be starving bfore I ate KFC or any of their products - but if I were a regular customer, I would be boycotting them, and telling them why, loudly.

This is only happening in one state, Victoria, which has a leftwing state govt. in power. This is the state where Muslims are taking a religious group to court for 'laughing at the Koran'. Other things are happening there also, as Muslims try to throw their weight around.

Every time something like this happens, it wakes up more Australians to the price of allowing Muslim immigration, so in a way its a good thing.

The sooner more Australians wake up to the agenda of these people, the better it will be for Australia.

383 Sean  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:19:13pm

Evariste- Two Pardners BBQ here in Dallas. Try it and you'll waddle out fat & happy!

384 IzzyFromAussie  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:20:48pm

Well, thanks Charles, for posting a story about Australia at 5:30AM local time. It's now lunch time and I find this wonderful story and there are 300 and something posts to wade through. So , I am not going to read them all.

The areas where these KFCs are located do have large Muslim populations. I have never heard of a restaurant removing items that offend someone. We Jews tend to make our own kosher restaurants if we want to eat kosher stuff. Removing pork from the menu wouldn't help us anyway, because of the requirement for separate dishes, etc.

Just as an aside, I find that a lot of Australians who are neither Jewish nor Muslim often get them mixed up. People ask me if I eat only halal. My response to them is that confusing Jews and Muslims can get you killed in some parts of the world and they want to educate themselves a bit more.

385 evariste  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:22:57pm

386 Frank IBC  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:23:40pm

Evariste -

I really don't understand the American dislike of goat. I just came up with a new word for that - caprophobia.

To me, it's the very best red meat (if you count pork as "the other white meat").

The very best goat I ever had was just last week, in the Mexican restaurant inside the Wyndham Anatole in Dallas. Stewed or braised goat, with a fairly simple sauce consisting primarily of jalapen~o and cilantro.

For you Caprophobes out there, goat is like a cross between brisket and lamb. Go on, try it, you'll like it.

387 Sean  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:25:25pm

I think sometime in the near future I'll have to go down to Pennsylvania Avenue and in front of the White House blow my nose on a copy of the koran while standing on a portrait of mohammed.

Welcome to America, douchebags.

I had a killer goat dish at a Jamacian rest. in NYC a few weeks ago.

I think it was the first time I ever ate goat. Although, the memory of my college years is a bit hazy... I probably ate a lot of things back then that I wouldn't touch now...

398 Frank IBC  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:29:59pm

I never liked KFC that much to begin with. Their "original recipe" chicken is mushy, and their "extra tasty crispy" is unbelievably fatty. And the "17(?) herbs and spices" seem bland to me.

My faves (for chain restaurants) are Roy Rogers (in spite of it being ridiculously greasy - cooked at too low a temperature, most likely) and Popeye's.

This is only happening in one state, Victoria, which has a leftwing state govt. in power

I don't know about that. I have met Steve Bracks a few times at Jewish functions. True, it is a labour government, but I don't think it is particularly left wing - they are doing a good job of taking on the unions at the moment.

Yes, the Muslims are suing a Christian group for making fun of them, but all they have achieved as that anyone who hears about it makes even more fun of them.

I have to say that reading about things in other parts of the world, Australia is one of the places that has the least impact from Islamists.

Sean-thanks for the praise :-) Although I must say (having read a nauseating number of reviews) I think the majority of the good reviews I read by Christians and Jews, while the reviewers do mention their own faith, they were still perfectly fair reviewers of it as a movie. In fact the most scathingly negative review of it as a film (cinematography, artistry) that I read was by a Christian pastor.

Same here on KFC. Growing up (80's) we used to get it all the time. I loved the cole slaw. Then it started to suck & Boston Market (a Heinz company) came to town, and they blew KFC away. I haven't been to KFC in years. Except on road trips, I manage to avoid fast food in general.

410 Thom  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:36:29pm

I like fast food. KFC, McD's, Burger King, Popeye's, Long John Silver's (their chicken planks rule!) you name it.

And Spam is quite possibly the perfect food.

Lovely spam, wonderful spam!

411 Frank IBC  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 4:38:35pm

Clarification: actually the goat dish I got in Dallas was Cabrito. I had gotten Cabrito previously at the Rio Grande restaurant in Bethesda over a decade, but had been a bit turned off by the ridiculous portion they gave me - an entire half of the young goat. You should have seen it on my plate - it looked like one of those Pterodactyl dishes on The Flintstones.

I love goat milk. It makes the best vanilla shakes. And I love goat cheese, particularly Gjetost.

Sean - nope, this was only my first time in Dallas. But I'll add Gloria's to my list.

Stormi - Thank you. And now I apologize for bringing up the Shiny Bald One Who Shall Not Be Named.

KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and Long Dong John Silver are all owned by the same company.

The first three were originally owned by Pepsi, but Pepsi was forced to sell them because none of the other fast food places would by Pepsi's drinks, since they didn't want to support the competition.

The three restaurants were spun off into the YUM Corporation, which later bought Long Dong John Silver.

I like the latter too, but same complaint as with many fried chicken places - not enough attention to the frying process, leaving the food greasy/mushy.

I love Taco Bell - definitely the best bargain, freshest ingredients; I can't remember ever getting a bad meal there.

Frank IBC, RightIsRight-60 minutes or someone like that did a survey of something like 1600 fast food joints, belonging to I think ten national franchises. I was really surprised, Taco Bell had the lowest number of health infractions! Burger King was the worst, no shocka. Taco Bell has always had the worst reputation, but actually it's the only chain I can eat off the menu if I have to. BK, McD, Wendy's etc-I'm forced to the salad/fries side of it because their main menu is just out of the question nasty.

The only thing I have about KFC is sometimes they don't seem to cook the chicken long enough and its still a little pink inside.

Chicken should be white meat. The other white meat, of course, is Rosie O'Donnell.

Just kidding, but I am tempted to Google up cannibalism and Spam, because I think I once heard (don't remember if it was SW Pacific or Amazon regions, think it was SW Pacific) that the surviving former cannibals said that of all meat, Spam tasted closest to human flesh.

Speaking of Spam, Hawaii, and cannibals, I remember reading a book by the name of "Call it Courage", about a Polynesian chief's son whose mother had drowned fishing in a storm, and was scared of the water, and suffered many taunts, until one day he set out in a small raft, landed on an apprently deserted island, caught wild boar, made tusk necklaces, fished in a lagoon with just a knife, and finally escaped from cannibals who lived on the far side of the island.

Kerry Wins Ramsey Clark Endorsement

On top of his near-sweep of Super Tuesday primary contests, likely Democratic nominee John Kerry has something else to celebrate tonight - the endorsement from his old anti-American Vietnam war protest buddy, Ramsey Clark.

"I think John Kerry is a great human being," Clark told Accuracy in Media at a press conference a few days ago. "I knew [Kerry] when he was - I call a youngster - in his 20s," said Clark, referring to the days when the former Lyndon Johnson attorney general acted as a lawyer for Kerry's radical group, Vietnam Veterans Against the War.

"I saw him as an extremely caring person, an extremely courageous person, and a person who was deeply concerned for peace and the well-being of other people," Clark added, saying he hoped a Kerry administration would take U.S. foreign policy in a new direction.

[Link: www.newsmax.com...]

And what "new direction" should U.S. foreign policy take in a kerry administration, ramsey? Do tell please.

responding to #432 and not to fast food (although the best KFC I ever had was one in the parking lot of a mall in Guadalajara, Mexico--much better than American chicken) -- If for 70 years, all political figures in opposition are assassinated, you get first stupidity, then anarchy?

442 Ed Moran abu Jew Eye for the Goy Guy  Tue, Mar 2, 2004 5:09:10pm

OK, Googled, Spam may or may not taste like human flesh

Now here's one last nugget of cannibalistic curiosity for you to chew on. The people of Hawaii and the South Pacific are known for their bizarrely intense love of the processed meat substance known as Spam, which was introduced to the islands during World War II. It might seem a mystery that the inhabitants of a tropical paradise would covet this disreputable American tripe-mush, but travel writer Paul Theroux has offered a possible explanation.

"It was a theory of mine that former cannibals of Oceania now feasted on Spam because Spam came the nearest to approximating the porky taste of human flesh," Theroux wrote in The Happy Isles of Oceania. "'Long pig' as they called a cooked human in much of Melanesia. It was a fact that the people-eaters of the Pacific had all evolved, or perhaps degenerated, into Spam-eaters. And in the absence of Spam they settled for corned beef, which also had a corpsy flavor."

But as Cecil Adams noted in his column "The Straight Dope," there's no proof that Pacific islanders are ex-cannibals, and the scarcity of meat likely fuels the local hunger for a handy reasonable facsimile. Still, none of us can ever say for sure unless we dare to take the forbidden taste test for ourselves. There's no law against peeling back a can of Spam and letting your imagination do the rest.

At least human flesh doesn't come packaged in that gross jelly afterbirth stuff.

I predict "Taqueria Arandas" will be the next nationwide restaurant chain. They already have expanded out from Houston to all along the US 59 corridor from Nacogdoches to Victoria.

I thought Taco Cabana would have taken off by now, they are huge in Texas but I haven't seem then elsewhere.

I had cabrito at a birthday party for my wife's uncle, it seemed a little slimy to me.

A week after the US Govt. banned sales of brains and intestines because of BSE, the carniceria we sometimes stop at on the way home was still selling sesos and tripas.

But I'm sure it is from Texas cattle (perhaps the ones that graze in the gas field in our neighborhood). As long as they aren't Canadian, they are probably safe.

Joules are an important thing. Think about kilograms, and meters, and seconds. Square those seconds, or better yet, square the inverse. You've got Newtons, sure, but drag it out some over a distance.

Anyway

Here is why Joules are important. CAPE is the measure of potential energy in the atmosphere than can be released in different ways. Say, on a standard late April day, warm humid air near Abilene gets ever warmer as the sun beats down, even as cool air moves in at the highest levels. Say you know let a kilogram parcel of air rise all the way from the surface to the base of the tropopause, where it won't really be up to rising anymore. If everything works just right, you could have CAPE (Convective Atmospheric Potential Energy) on the order of 4000 Joules/Kilogram or more. (just as amind experiment, divide kilograms out from both terms, and compare to the units of helicity, another important factor in tornado generation)

Usually, you need a fair amount of shear, and a lot of CAPE, but if you have a lot of one, you don't need as much of the other. Especially, as several model studies have determined, if a weak boundary exists.

Take Jarrell, TX. I recall once listening to a local low power polka station while driving up I-35. High CAPE, low shear, pre-existing windshift.

Synoptic situation ... an atypical pattern
The NOAA Service Assessment for this event called the synoptic situation "atypical" because (1) it occurred well south of stronger mid-level flow, (2) a strong low-level jet (usually a feature in violent tornado events) was absent, and (3) there was 'apparently' weak low- and mid-level winds and weak vertical wind shears (an uncommon scenario for violent tornadoes).

Fascinating description of conditions leading to F-5 Jarrell tornado (better viewed on a faster connection than my 56k home phone modem)

And wasn't there some kind of android Mr. Spock clone on the first of the ripoff the roiginal Star Trek's named Data?

Evariste, that was one of the cats that belonged to the colony that live in the Colosseum. My hotel was right by there, so I walked past the Colosseum every night, and there were always cats around, they even were sitting up on top of the lights inside the gates, maybe trying to stay warm.

Most of them were pretty diffident once they saw I didn't have food, but this one came right out to me and I scratched and petted him for a while. There was a lady there feeding the cats and I gave her some money, a donation for the kitties. She offered to take my picture with my new little friend.

A very interesting tidbit from the JouleData Solutions guy's blog:

Traffic Ticket? How to avoid the points...
A friend passed this info along regarding what you should do if you get a speeding ticket. Is it true? You decide... I guess it can't hurt to try...

If you get a speeding ticket (went through a red light or whatever the case may be) and you're going to get points on your license, this is a method to ensure that you DO NOT get the points. When you get your fine, send in a check to pay for it. If the fine is $79.00 make the check out for $82.00 or some small amount over the fine. The system will then have to send you back a check for the difference, however here is the trick. DO NOT CASH THE REFUND CHECK! Throw it away!

Points are not assessed to your license until all financial transactions are complete. If you do not cash the check, then the transactions are NOT complete. The system has received it's money and is satisfied and will no longer bother you. This information comes from an unmentionable computer company that sets up the standard databases used by every state.

Iraqis have decided, with the blessing of coalition administrators, that Islamic law will rule in Iraq.

They reached this decision at about 4:20 a.m. on March 1, when the Iraqi Governing Council, in the presence of top coalition administrators, agreed on the wording of an interim constitution

Islamic Law Rules In Iraq
by Daniel Pipes
New York Sun

March 2, 2004
[Link: www.danielpipes.org...]
[Link: daily.nysun.com...]

In Iraq, what ought to be the role of Islam and its legal system, called the Sharia? In theory, this topic should be the subject of a soul-searching debate in America and all the other countries whose forces are occupying Iraq, for how it is answered will likely influence Iraq's future in profound ways.

Views on Islam's proper role reflect how one understands the purpose of the war in Iraq one year ago:

Islamic law should be prohibited: The overthrow of Saddam Hussein was called Operation Iraqi Freedom for a reason: the American-led occupation forces must not become midwife for an anti-democratic legal system that disallows freedom of religion, executes adulterers, oppresses women, and discriminates against non-Muslims. Acquiescing to the Sharia discourages moderates while encouraging the Wahhabi and Khomeinist extremists in Iraq. Also, because Sunnis and Shiites interpret Sharia differently, its implementation promises troubles ahead.

Islamic law should be permitted: Coalition forces entered Iraq primarily to protect their countries from a threatening regime, not to achieve Iraqi freedom. Democracy and prosperity for Iraq is just a happy byproduct. The pursuit of coalition interests does not require that Iraq's penal, family, financial, and other laws conform to Western preferences. Further, for Washington to implement its ambitious goals in the Middle East, it must have good relations with powerful Shiite leaders like Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who want the Sharia in place. And if a majority of Iraqis should opt for Sharia, democracy advocates can hardly deny them their wishes.

This has the makings of a deep argument over the purposes of invading Iraq, long-term coalition goals in Iraq, and whether the Sharia is or is not inherently reactionary, iniquitous, aggressive, and misogynist.

Unfortunately, the debate is already over, before it could begin: Iraqis have decided, with the blessing of coalition administrators, that Islamic law will rule in Iraq.

They reached this decision at about 4:20 a.m. on March 1, when the Iraqi Governing Council, in the presence of top coalition administrators, agreed on the wording of an interim constitution. This document, officially called the Transitional Administrative Law, is expected to remain the ultimate legal authority until a permanent constitution is agreed on, presumably in 2005. The council members focused on whether the interim constitution should name the Sharia as "a source" or "the source" for laws in Iraq. "A source" suggests laws may contravene the Sharia, while "the source" implies that they may not. In the end, they opted for the Sharia being just "a source" of Iraq's laws.

This appears to be a successful compromise. It means, as council members explained in more detail, that legislation may not contradict either the "universally agreed-upon tenets of Islam" or the quite liberal rights guaranteed in other articles of the interim constitution, including protections for free speech, free press, religious expression, rights of assembly, and due process, plus an independent judiciary and equal treatment under the law.

But there are two reasons to see the interim constitution as a signal victory for militant Islam.

First, the compromise suggests that while all of the Sharia may not be put into place, every law must conform with it. As one pro-Sharia source put it, "We got what we wanted, which is that there should be no laws that are against Islam." The new Iraq may not be Saudi Arabia or Iran, but it will include substantial portions of Islamic law.

Second, the interim constitution appears to be only a way station. Islamists will surely try to gut its liberal provisions, thereby making Sharia effectively "the source" of Iraqi law. Those who want this change — including Mr. al-Sistani and the Governing Council's current president — will presumably continue to press for their vision. Iraq's leading militant Islamic figure, Muqtada al-Sadr, has threatened that his constituency will "attack its enemies" if Sharia is not "the source" and the pro-Tehran political party in Iraq has echoed Sadr's ultimatum.

When the interim constitution does take force, militant Islam will have blossomed in Iraq.

For their part, the occupying powers now face a monumental challenge: Making sure this totalitarian ideology does not dominate Iraq and become the springboard for a new round of repression and aggression from Baghdad. How they fare has major implications for Iraqis, their neighbors, and far beyond.

Wonders what some of you that are wiser than I, make of this turn of events? And, how, will this help both Israel and America if Iraq becomes similar to another Iran?

But I kind of live out in the boonies, and any other LGFers are in Aachen or Frankfurt, which is a bit far from here. Couple of hours' drive.

Somebody told me a joke once explaining one of the differences between Americans and Europeans. It's amusing, but it is true:

Americans think that 200 years is a very long time, while Europeans think that 200 miles is a very long way.
---

I even find that I'm starting to get this way. I used to think nothing of driving across my state for five hours, a distance of about 350 miles. But now when I have to go to Frankfurt, a drive of about 2 hours on a good day, I whinge because it's so far.

They're bluish-greenish-grayish, actually. Depending on what colors I'm wearing, they look different. Anyway..

The Orloge, this astronomical clock, is really cool. It's like twenty feet tall, and built to the side of a building, I think the old town hall in the old center of Prague. The picture that I posted was one I took while out wandering around the city in the middle of the night. The next day I turned up around noon to watch it strike the hour and do stuff. There were little skeleton statues that danced around and did weird things. Kinda creepy, actually.

It does other stuff besides keep track of time.

Orloge.

You're very welcome. It looks like that page and all the others linked to it have been done by high school students. If so, I'm pretty impressed.

I'm planning to go back to Prague in the spring, when it's warm (almost caught pneumonia back in October, it was so cold and I was already sick), and I think that the pages done by the high school kids are really good. I intend to use those to help me plan my trip.

But, I do have Florence this weekend to look forward to. I signed up with a tour company to take a bus to Florence friday night. 13 hours. Phew. I'm brave, I can do it.

If anybody wants postcards from Florence, email me with your address. I'm more than happy to send them.

Regarding the animal cops show - I can't watch it. I get way too emotional. And heeere we go -

The way that animals (domesticated and sometimes wild) show unconditional love towards us I think it is absolutely fuc*ing disgusting that a person or person would treat an animal in such ways. (call me a dick, but I think some of those cases call for the death penalty. Yes, I know it is irrational but if someone lacks the human nature to hold back an urge to set a dog on fire or some such thing then do away with him/her.)

528 Stormi, who is still very sorry  Wed, Mar 3, 2004 3:39:31am

Oh my god, that breaks my heart. I cannot even begin to fathom how somebody could do that to an animal. I am so glad that they were able to raise money to pay for her care, and thankful that animals don't seem to carry around painful memories the way that we do, which hopefully means that she'll be able to be happy again.

They're more mentally resilient, maybe, or their understanding is not so great, so they don't fully realize how horrifying something like that is, and don't dwell on it for the rest of their lives. I don't know.

I do know that I (totally on accident) poured hot coffee on Bear's head one time and he bitched at me for a couple of minutes but then all was forgiven.

Which is not to say that that bastard deserves forgiveness, I just don't think Daisy or another animal carries around with them the thirst for revenge.

529 Gabriel Rossman  Wed, Mar 3, 2004 3:40:23am

I honestly don't see the problem here. As I see it, a few franchisees have responded to the tastes of their local customer base by creating a halal-style, if not fully halal, menu. This is free enterprise, not dhimmitude. And in response to the post that asked, would they do this for kosher Jews, the answer is yes, some restaraunts have done that. I used to live in Highland Park, a Jewish neighborhood in New Brunswick, NJ. The local Dunkin Donuts franchisee eliminated the standard breakfast meats from his menu, got certified as dairy kosher, and saw increased business.

533 V the K  Wed, Mar 3, 2004 4:26:13am

I also read Fast-Food Nation. Quite an exercise in advocacy journalism. It's easy to see how someone who lacks the ability to distinguish between objective and advocacy journalism (facts and propaganda) would take it to heart and disdain fast food after that.

Once you see through the author's obvious agenda, you can take FFN entirely the opposite way, as it was intended. It not only made me hungry, it made me marvel at the innovations that have made food cheap and plentiful while providing millions of entry-level jobs to people who would otherwise be unemployed. Furthermore, more efficient agricultural production has allowed millions of acres of formerly agricultural land to be restored to wilderness. I mean, let's face it, subsistence farming is hard on the environment, and on people who have to live that way.

Oh, yeah, and the people who pioneered the innovations and created the millions of fast food jobs... they became exceedingly wealthy, which is what really frosted the author's cookies.

V the K -

If "you are what you eat", then I guess Eskimo/Inuits would be high in Omega-3 fatty acids.

I've eaten at McDavid's. Not bad, particularly the Schnitzel. (Which, unlike at the Weiner Schitzel Haus in California, is actually Schnitzel, not Weiner.) I saved a soft drink cup from the visit.

Fox News reports that McDonald's is abolishing Super Sizes. Interesting. Even more interesting was the comment of one disappointed customer, that he would "Super Size" just to get the large drink, and discard the extra fries. That would seem to go against the grain of the "OMG, McDonald's is making us all obese!" mentality.

If you cant get out to order your own Fried Chick..Try this:

Black Iron Skillet (if you dont have one..forget it)
Solid White Crisco in the can--Heat up

Chicken..wash off.
If ya want stick chiken in Buttermilk or Milk or beaten eggs

Flour: Cup of White..Self Rising Flour. (I like that best)
I use heavy plastic bags..to shake the chick. No more paper bags cause they used recycled paper.

In the Flour put:
1T Granulated Garlic Power
1-2 Tablespoons of LIPTON Onion Soup Mix..both the brown stuff in there and the onions
Cracked or Regular Pepper to taste
Teensy weensy bit of Ted Pepper if you want
Paprica ..bout 1 Teaspoon
(some people add a little Good Seasons DRY salad dressing mix but I dont)

Make it with little extra added salt the first time till you see if the salt in the Lipton Mix is enough for you. If not experiment with how much salt you want to put.

Put the soaked or even just moisted with water chicken in that bag and SHAKE..then smush..the flour into the chicken. Press the flour in. Take out and put on a plate. Do this with each piece of chicken and do it three times. Last thing you do is PRESS the flour into the chicken. This way you get some kind of a crust withOUT having to put the chicken in the Frig..and waiting a few hrs. This is a recepie for I want my chicken right now..

Fry..drain..EAT.

When I visited Paris a few decades ago, I went into MickeyD's, ordered a Big Mac, and took it out onto the sidewalk to eat. Knowing how much that must have pissed off the locals just warms my heart these days.

I just remembered..the secret recip. for Boston Chick is a honey and LIME glaze..I would add to it..Granulated Garlic Powder, cracked black ppr. and salt. Parsley if ya want to. Maybe?? 2 T Honey and 1 T. Lime..(see how it tastes..dont want it too sweet)..then add the rest of the seaonings and give it try.*** (when you roast the chick..stick a small piece of Land O Lakes Butter on each piece) You can fiddle with the amounts each time you try it and see what tastes the most like Boston Chick to you..
