It's Spaniard, the Spaniards being Spanish. Like Britons being British.

My sympathies go out to all who lost a loved one in that attack, and all those who were needlessly murdered

Dear Sir/Madam,

The amount of messages of condolences, solidarity and support is being so
overwhelming that we feel forced to write a common message of gratitude to all of
you.

On behalf of the People of Spain, and on behalf the King Juan Carlos I and of our
Government we would like you to know that we thank you deeply for this show of
solidarity and friendship. Some of your messages were deeply moving some mirrored
our anger and determination. We thank you all. And rest assured that terrorists and
terror will not prevail. Together with you and with the other free and democratic
societies of the World we will continue this fight until the end and we will win.
Our common values and principles, our way of life are at stake.

Thank you all, again.

Their e-mail system is very user-friendly. I dropped them this short note:

Please rest assured that in your time of pain and grief millions of Americans stand with your beautiful country and wonderful people just as Spain stood with us after our own tragedy on 9-11-01. Your battle against murderous extremists is our battle and I hope that no one doubts that you have both the sympathy and support of America and her people as you rise from this evil blow.
16 zulubaby  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 2:19:55pm

Thanks Charles, you're a mentsh.

17 FH  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 2:19:58pm

My e-mail:

I am an American. A Californian to be exact. From nowhere special. I have never been to Spain. I may never go to Spain. I don't even speak Spanish. But today, today I am a Spaniard. We are all Spaniards. Your country has suffered a disaster that I can not now, nor will likely ever, fully comprehend. Men of evil did this. Yes, I say evil, for there is no other word to describe the hatred, the callous disregard for human life and God granted dignity of men, of those who would commit such an act. I wish to express my greatest sympathy to the people of Spain, who suffer now because of the scourge of terrorism. This suffering shall not just die away. It shall linger, linger on in the hearts of those who must bury their dead, who must visit the graves of them each year on this day, those who must explain to their children why Mother, or Father, or Brother, or Sister will not be coming home again. To those who will mourn the passing of loved ones their whole lives, this day shall never end. My prayers are with you all. This is a wound that shall never fully heal, and that is the greatest sorrow of all. Buildings and trains may be rebuilt, but lives can not. Spain stood by America in its darkest time in recent years, something that I, or any American, shall never forget. You stood by us in our hour of darkness, now let us return that favor. Whatever it is that you need now of us, just ask. We shall be there for you. My prayers are with the people of Spain. May God bless you, and all the people of Spain, and may his Justice by swift, and sure.

20 Blue Eyed Devil  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 2:41:05pm

It's a terrible day. The thought of all those grieving families tonight is more than I can stand. Blood lust on this scale can not be justified and must not be appeased. Some will try to do both in the days to come. Shun them. I never fly any other flag but the stars and stripes. But tonight I will make an exception. Spain is a force for good in this world. She does not deserve this.

Thank You, Charles, for the address. Thank You FH #17
for a very moving statement of sympathy. It is a rallying cry for freedom. Evariste #14 Thank you for posting the message from the Spainish Consulate in Chicago. I pray that it reflects the belief of the Spainish people and their government.

For all those who have mention today that there were relieved when they found out that it was Spain and not Israel and then were ashamed, I have to to join your ranks. This morning I had the same reaction relief and then shame. I suspect all of us are in good company.

After an emergency Cabinet meeting, a somber Aznar called the attacks "mass murder" and vowed to hunt down the attackers. He reaffirmed his policy of not negotiating with ETA.

Why does Spain insist that Israel negotiate with Arafat?

Thanks Charles for the link. The English version had an e-mail button and I’ve sent my personal note. You know, it doesn’t always matter what country is attacked; as always, these were just ordinary people, like us, who were murdered and maimed for no other reason than they were workers traveling to their job, students sitting on a train cramming for their afternoon exam, lovers looking for an afternoon getaway, or children going to a museum or the zoo with a grandparent. We might be Jewish, we might be Americans, and today, we might be Spaniards, but regardless, according to those that would destroy us, we are fit to die just because we breathe. I hate their cause; I hate their politics and I hate their ideology. And I pity their ignorant followers because they have no idea the destruction that they bring upon themselves and those that sympathize with them.

RE: Condolences - Steadfast Resolve & Solidarity from America

To the people of Spain,

My family and I are Americans and we live in Colorado. We are shocked and angered by the senseless murders of innocent Spaniards and people just minding to their own daily lives in Madrid.

As one of our strongest allies we are forever grateful for the way Aznard and the people of Spain stood with us in the wake of the attacks we suffered on 9-11. Unfortunately the people of Spain will also now have a date of infamy burned into their minds - forever.

We are your brothers and sisters and we will continue to pray for peace and comfort for the families of the dead and all the healing power of god and physicians to be upon the injured.

In every way that we are able we will support those in power that believe in the relentless pursuit of these terror monsters. We will pray that they are wise and strong in bringing these evil creeps to justice.

We will be making a donation to the Red Cross or which ever international humanitarian agency that we deterimine will most driectly help the effected people of Madrid.

I am asking my friends and neighbors to reach out to and support the people of Spain in any way they can. I am currently looking for a Spanish flag to fly next to the American flag by our front door.

You have our complete sympathy and solidarity.
Sincerely,
Eric & Autumn Daniels along with Ashley (13), Isaiah (6) and Gabriel (5)

Your note was so pithy and powerful, that I hope you don't mind, but I basically plaigerized it with a few modifications and sent it to the SF consulate as my expression of sympathy....

37 Joseph  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 3:50:29pm

I note that Javier Ruperez, the Ambassador, apparently has personal experience with terrorists - has a book of memoirs called Kidnapped by the ETA.

From the looks of the body count alone, however, I'm betting this is jihadi.

38 Jheka  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 4:17:18pm

#36 thinkingmom:

Glad I could help. Actually, the SF consulate isn't too far from me. Maybe I'll swing by and leave some flowers. I remember how much such gestures meant to me after 9-11 (the one I remember best is the many, many flowers and cards left in front of the New York-New York casino in Vegas ... odd, but it touched me).

39 cba  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 4:19:50pm

#21 Occasional Reader:
If I may suggest, instead of leaving flowers, make a donation to a suitable charity* for the same amount you would have spent on the flowers.

*Some suggestions (not an exhaustive list): Red Cross, Magen David Adom, Zaka, Pizza for the IDF, Iraqi Schools...

From Israpundit:

Memorial, NYC, tomorrow, for Spanish dead

This is an announcement of a memorial event to be held Friday, March 12 1:pm at 211 East 49th St., the Cervantes Institute.

The announcement says that they wil stand in silent condemnation of the terror attack.

It would be an important statement for many New Yorkers to attend.

Here's what I wrote:

To the Spanish people:
As a New Yorker who experienced the horror of the attack on the World Trade Center, I deeply sympathize with the Spanish people in their time of grief.
All decent people must join in the war to eliminate this threat to the civilized world.
America and all Americans stand with you. You are in our thoughts and in our hearts.

44 realwest  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 5:33:43pm

#42 Amy - thanks for the information; you are, as usual, quite correct - it will be, indeed, important for as many of us to attend as possible.

This has been the worst terrorist atrocity this country has ever known, and so I'd like to thank on behalf of the Spanish people all the posters here who have expressed their heart-felt condolences. I'd like to thank Charles specially for providing this space so we can all come together to express our feelings at a time like this. And I'd like to thank you all personally for these gestures of support that show how much you care for the victims and their families.

Thank you.

47 Stop Hillary  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 5:56:17pm

I refuse to be like those Europeans that laid flowers and burned candles for our dead, only to ultimately wish more of it on us.

That sort of candy ass sympathy is what is killing us.

My message would be, "Spain, mourn your dead, bind your wounds, and then resolve to kill every last Islamic son of bitch you can lay your hands on until the surviving scum raise their hands, beg for mercy and submit finally to your laws and civil institutions."

That is what has to happen but somehow that's not the kind of message that the PC crowd wants to read right now.

48 Belize042  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 6:36:37pm

Prime Minister Aznar's words in his address to our Congress earlier this year give me hope that Spain will not roll over for the Islamofascists. I found the text on the Spanish Embassy web site, but will quote the significant portion here:

Just 10 days ago the first ever World Congress of victims of terrorism was held in Madrid. The victims are the moral backbone that underpins our fight against terror. They give us valour and courage. However, they also call us to account and demand results from us. They demand justice and reparation too.

There can be no justification whatsoever for terrorism. It destroys the causes it purports to defend. The political or religious causes that terrorism allegedly serves are among its victims also.

Terrorists must be made to realise that defeat is the only possible outcome. We derive our strength from the moral superiority of democratic systems. As has occurred on past occasions in history, freedom will triumph over barbarity this time also.

My most sincere condolences to our friends in Spain. I pray for swift and terrible justice on the perpetrators of this heinous crime, for comfort in your mourning, and peace and safety for the citizens of your beautiful country.

Instapundit has an announcement from the Spanish Embassy that there will be a silent demonstration in Washington Circle tomorrow (in front of GW Hospital) at 12 noon, so anyone in DC who's interested can show support. The Embassy is just nearby at Pennsylvania Ave. and 24th Street, and they'll have a condolence book for signing as well.

52 Fay  Thu, Mar 11, 2004 8:40:46pm

My heart is heavy. I mourn the murder of innocents in Spain today.

I have been to Spain many times. Spain is home to many "firsts" in my life. My first pearl necklace: Majorca pearls, my first drink of chilled dry sherry, my first time sitting under a citrus tree, my first viewing of an olive grove, my first taste of fresh tuna fish, my first drink from a wineskin....

I'm so sorry.

53 newsonterror.com  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 12:11:07am

It is high time for the ETA to turn to peaceful and parliamentary means to carry on its movement. They need to learn this from the IRA.

If the non-Jihadi terror outfits do not give up their violent methods, they will end up weakening Western resistance to the Jihad by confusing the issue about who is behind the violence.

This time though it is clear that the Jihadis are behind the blood-bath at Madrid - althoug it will take some time for this to come out clearly. We need to consider the following:

The multiple bomb blasts were co-ordinated to happen on the same day at the same time - an Al Qaeda tactic seen on 9/11 and many other occasions.

The suicide bombers are said to be involved. ETA has never used suicide bombers.

The attacks came exactly two and a half years after 9/11, they happened on 3/11 - another Al Qaeda signature.

A Jihadi group had threatened French Railways with bomb blasts just a week back.

The Jihad has reached Spain. It will not be long before other Western capitals are targetted. Let us be ready to hit back.

FH's eloquent and moving post was copied and shared with the world by Glenn Reynolds this morning, after I had called it to his attention.

to:pundit@instapundit.com

"Today I Am a Spaniard"

Glenn, I came across the following condolence note at Littlegreenfootballs. I found it very moving, and would like to share it with you.

Ernest A. G

I would like to apologize to FH for the misattribution. I will call the error to Mr. Reynolds's attention immediately.

55 Shira  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 2:35:08am

Thanks for the link, Charles. I wrote to the consulate in New York.

I was in Spain a long time ago and found it a beautiful country. I hope the Spanish government and people will do what they must to make sure they an attack like this never strikes Spain again.

And I hope my own country does the same. Soon.

56 Shira  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 2:36:02am

Preview, preview ... "make sure that ..."

57 Macker  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 3:36:17am

I heard about this and thought: DAMN! DAMN THEM ALL! I'm quite sure that like many visitors to LGF, this deliberate and dastardly attack on the people of Spain is NOT the work of ETA.

Now I have just one thing to say to any and all al-Qaeda sympathizers in Spain.
WE WILL COME FOR YOU.

58 Montaigne's Cat  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 3:43:19am

I just read this at Belmont Club, sorry if it's old news here.

From New York to Madrid:
3/11/04 is exactly 911 days since 9/11/01.

59 Stop Hillary  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 3:58:14am

Last night I heard an English translation of Aznar's speech. He vowed to track down the criminals, convict them and see that they spend the rest of their lives in prison. A very limp response if you ask me. Then again, Bush's reaction to 9-11 was similar.

They are not criminals, they are soldiers in a war against us. They need to be hunted down and killed on the spot. If they are fortunate enough to surrender, it's military tribunals follwed by prompt execution.

60 Alex  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 11:32:56am

We shouldn't forget, too, that Spain has the distinction of being one of the only countries that admitted Jewish refugees during WWII. (By contrast, we well remember what Vichy France did! Not much has changed in sixty years.) I noted this in my e-mail to the Embassy as an extra reason to be grateful to them, besides their current assistance in the WoT.

61 David All  Fri, Mar 12, 2004 1:31:00pm

Thank You to Charles and everybody who has commented on this thread. I have sent an e-mail to the Spainish Consulate General here in Washington, DC. I hope to visit their embassy this weekend and sign their condolence book.

62 Rebekah  Sat, Mar 13, 2004 6:56:36pm

Hi! I am an American who wishes she was in Spain right now...I don't know any Spanish people and yet I wish that I did right now. When my husband and I heard the news the other day, I cried and my husband was silent. We cried with you that day. We hurt with you now as well. I was reading stories of several of the people that lost their lives that day on the internet tonight and felt deeply moved to do something. It's just hard to know what to do. Please let me know if there is anything we can do. We are praying for you, that God would ease your pain and care of those who have lost loved ones. We also pray for the many who were hurt and who are now in pain. The feeling I have is the same feeling that I had on September 11th. It is also the same feeling I had while observing photos of hurt Iraqi people or wounded people in Afghanistan. Human suffering is such a difficult thing to deal with. We love you. Many people here in the US mourn deeply with you. We are captivated with what has happened to you at this time. May Good overcome Evil.
