-RetweetBreaking News: Sheik Yassin Finally Dead!

Sun, Mar 21, 2004 at 7:37:04 pm PST

LGF reader SoCalJustice says he has inside information that the “spiritual leader” of Hamas, Sheik Yassin, has been killed in an Israeli missile strike.

This is huge. Please, Lord, let it be true.

UPDATE: Haaretz Flash News has the story.

05:34 Palestinian witnesses: Hamas spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin killed in IAF air strike

UPDATE: I predict the mother of all car swarms.

UPDATE: AP has it: Israeli Air Strike Targets Hamas Leader.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli helicopters fired missiles at Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin’s car as it left his house for a mosque at daybreak Monday, residents said. It was not immediately known if Yassin was in the car and if there were casualties.

UPDATE: Reuters has it, too, in a sloppy, hastily translated article. The bastard is dead. Israeli Kills Hamas’ Sheikh Ahmed Yassin -Witnesses.

GAZA March 22 (Reuters) - Israeli helicopters gunships fired missiles at Hamas’ spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin as he left a mosque before dawn on Monday, killing the Hamas leader and several others, witnesses said.

Remnants of Yassin’s blood-soaked wheel-chair were seen outside the mosque. Worshippers said he had been killed in the strike and his body had been evacuated to a different location. Israel has said it would step up operations to track and kill Islamic militants after a suicide bombing at a strategic port last week.

As with any sane human being, I have trouble with the notion of taking pleasure in the death of another human being. Let's just call it grim satisfaction that this man will no longer be able to order suicide bombings. We have to maintain a fine balancing act. We must remain in touch with our own humanity as we take these people out one by one (and God forbid, thousand by thousand) as we assert the fact in the world that the Western formula of representative government and abhorrence of the things they stand for is made crystal clear.

Israeli Air Strike Kills Hamas Founder

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Israeli helicopters fired missiles at Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin as he left a mosque near his house at daybreak Monday, residents said, and witnesses said he was killed.

Witnesses said Israeli helicopters fired three missiles at Yassin and two bodyguards as they left the mosque, killing them instantly. Hamas officials confirmed that he had been killed.

Yussef Haddad, 35, a taxi driver, said he saw the missiles hit and kill Yassin and the bodyguards. "Their bodies were shattered," he said.

Yassin was by far the most senior Palestinian militant killed in more than three years of Israeli-Palestinian fighting. Hundreds of angry Palestinians gathered around his minutes after the attack, calling for revenge against Israel.

Ambulances and fire trucks raced to the scene. sirens wailing, and rescue workers were gathering up parts of the shattered bodies.

Yassin, a quadriplegic, founded Hamas in 1987. He was held in Israeli prisons for several years before being released in 1994.

Someone had a problem with us rejoicing over the death of this terrorist.

Some people rejoice over death, yes. We rejoice over the death of a person who is suffering of terminal illness. We rejoice over the death of someone who is old and ready to meet their maker. And we rejoice over the death of someone who has caused the death of others unjustly. I see nothing wrong with that rejoicing.

Please, take your problem with this rejoicing and just stifle it because you are not going to get a lot of sympathy for it here. If you have a problem, you need to fix it. Elsewhere.

To the dismay of those that stood by, all about the body of Saruman a grey mist gathered, and rising slowly to a great height like smoke from a fire, as a pale shrouded figure it loomed over the Hill. For a moment it wavered, looking to the West; but out of the West came a cold wind, and it bent away, and with a sigh dissolved into nothing.

I've been saving that quote for quite a while now... this is the best news since the capture of Saddam.

If anyone is still justifying the Spanish vote by claiming the electorate was upset that Aznar tried to blame ETA, hit them with this. Otherwise it's going to turn into myth just like "Bush said Saddam's WMDs were imminent."

Hamas chief killed in air strike

Israel had warned it would target Yassin
Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin has been killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, Hamas officials have said.
Israeli helicopter gunships hit Sheikh Yassin's car as he left for a mosque at daybreak, local residents said.

Mosques reportedly announced his death over loudspeakers and urged people to take to the streets in protest.

Israel had warned it would target the Hamas chief after the militant group killed scores of Israelis in suicide bombings over the past three years.

Ambulances and fire engines raced to the scene of the attack.

Yussef Haddad, 35, a taxi driver, said he saw the missiles hit and kill Yassin and the bodyguards.

"Their bodies were shattered," he was quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

French Voters in Provinces Turn Sour on Chirac

In the first nationwide election since conservatives swept to power here two years ago, French voters on Sunday expressed dissatisfaction with President Jacques Chirac's center-right government by showing strong support for the opposition Socialist Party and endorsing the far rightist National Front as a vocal minority party.

The Vichy are our friends.

#75 selpaw: Yeah, I heard Griffin say "This is worrisome" or some such pap. Doubt that spew will be uttered if it was, oh, say Zawahiri confirmed dusted. She's normally pretty good though.

While I applaud Israel's righteous resolve today, I hope she'll stay the course. Expect the coming attacks on Israel, and take out Rantisi next. Then Arafat. Then whomever's next. Or straight out refuse to be cast in the "cycle of violence" script.

Play the Spain card, and play it hard, hot and earnest. Directly quote the condemnations of terror issued by various foreign leaders after the Christians ate shrapnel in Madrid. Speak directly to American voters during this election campaign and say that, like the US, Israel will bring terrorists to justice, or justice to terrorists, and let Bush and Kerry put their chips on the table. Speak at the UN, and state that the terrorists will not be tolerated, be they Al Qaeda or Hamas. State the terrorism will not be tolerated, even if their victims are Jews.

No involvement in the Hamas military wing? You asshole, there is no such thing as a "military" and "political" wing of a terrorist organization. They are all terrorists, even those who don't pull a trigger. Do you think Mafia bosses actually do the killing? No, they give orders. Same for terrorists.

The world just got a hell of a lot better now that this man is dead. That is undeniable. Go apologize for terrorists elsewhere, you fucking asshole.

Yassin advised a compliant Yassir Arafat on July 16, 1999:

Obviously good news, which ought to have happened long ago. As for suggestions that Israel bomb participants at his funeral, it will obviously not happen. However, in the hope that someone in a position of influence reads this, Israel could send helicopters to hover over the funeral procession, and possibly fire some harmless flares, which would ensure a huge stampede, but is not quite the same as firing on unarmed idiots.

So I went out and bought a cheapo chocolate easter bunny, but I didn't start eating it until ~9:30, which is about the same time Yassin the Bastard caught the one-way ticket to splodeydom.

So I have the "passing out candy" angle covered. I didn't actually know that he was dead until around 10 when I put on Fox, but who cares---I got my sweets!!!

Everyone should eat a handful of chocolate right now and think about the Palestinians stuffing their faces and ululating on 9/11.

I'm much more cold bloodedly rational in my choice of words than I sound, always.

I already pretty much knew how scary and bigoted Muslims were even back then - I had already investigated the middle east. My talks with Aziz were an experiment to see if I could find a liberal believing Muslim who would talk frankly and publicly. And to see if I could sell Gandian nonviolence, since Israel is of course the perfect target for hate free politics...

Obviously that experiment was a complete failure. Aziz refuses to answer a single arguement he's faced with.

Anyway this Shukri guy want's us to buy the bigotted view that imams who preach violence, war and genocide are holy men who are innocent of their crime (because of course they're only fulfulling Gods will).

That kind of monster needs to be exposed as loudly as possible- that's the only hope there.

If he's a westerner or liberal who bought that propganda without facing its meaning then he needs his nose rubbed in it... Anyway you can't argue around preaching genocide as if it didn't matter - so there is sense going past that point. You have to face it, and if this monster won't then boot him off the site!

Shukri:

Instead of making emotionally based claims, can someone show me some proof that he was directly involved with military operations?

I'm going to do you a favor and assume that you're asking this question because your mother picked you out of the cabbage patch the day before yesterday and you really are that innocent.

Not only was Yassin "involved" with "military operations", but major terrorist actions required the approval of Yassin:

Khalil Shikaki maintains that the big attacks have to be personally approved by Shaykh Yassin and all the other leaders. “But this does not mean that smaller attacks would not be carried out because they don’t require a political decision.”

Yassin was the chief architect of the Hamas "underground".

Upon his release [from prison in 1985], Yassin resumed his work of setting up a military apparatus. At first, emphasis was placed on the struggle against 'heretics' and collaborators, in accordance with the view of the Muslim Brotherhood that Jihad should come only after the purging of rivals from within. At the same time, a military infrastructure was prepared, including the stockpiling of weapons for the war against Israel. Shortly before the outbreak of the Intifada, operatives were recruited to carry out the military Jihad. Organized military activity by this group, including regular terrorist attacks, became manifest only after the beginning of the Intifada.

And today this terrorist butcher, and breeder of butchers, met up with the Sword of Gideon. If you want to sob into your pillow about it, keep it to yourself, okay?

You've got it. The double standard is nauseating. But this is what Jews have had to tolerate since time in memorial. WE'LL make it no matter what anyone thinks.

And for those who say Sharon lost his balls, stop and think of how difficult it is for the U.S to wage the war on terror. Look at some of the ridiculous compromises the United States has had to make to pacify (right or wrong) other countries. Why can the same not be said for Israel?? Israel pretty much stands alone. But for those of us who know and cherish her history, and understand her strength and courage our faith should never be unbroken. Israel is a beacon! In the end we can not be destroyed. Tonight like hundreds of nights in the past we celebrate Israel.
Israel has always been strong and they will continue. Please keep negative comments at bay. Let us savor this moment. We deserve it.

you call this "no involvement in Hamas military operations"
???

In 1989 Yassin allegedly ordered the killing of Palestinians who he believed had collaborated with the Israel Defence Forces. He was also convicted of ordering the kidnapping and killing of two IDF soldiers. He was arrested by Israel for these crimes and sentenced to life imprisonment by an Israeli court.

In 1997 Yassin was released from Israeli prison as part of an arrangement with Jordan . . . Following his release, Yassin returned to his role as ["]spiritual leader["] of Hamas. He immediately resumed his calls for . . . suicide bombings against both Israeli military and civilian targets.

Shaikh Ahmed Yassin is a paraplegic in a wheelchair. He has no involvement in Hamas military operations.

Oh really. Let's just talk about his most recent bit of involvement.

Yassin, as spiritual leader, changed Hamas' previous approach to about women, probably the only shred of decency they had, by directly approving the use of women as suicide bombers. Without his direct and very specific approval as the Hamas spiritual leader, of the use of women as suicide bombers it would not have happened. he could have stopped the use of women but instead he praised it and approved of it.

He has Jewish and Palestinian blood on his hands because of the words that came out of his foul hate filled mouth.

I do not rejoice at his death because I don't want anyne to die.

Celebrating anyone's murder is deranged. And let's not parse words here, it was murder -- call it something else if it makes you feel better about your thrill and righteous glee, but an Israeli gunship firing a missile at someone on the ground, resulting in that person's death, is murder.

Brilliant..and a special pigskin blanket to cover the bits and pieces they have left to bury. This is one case I am elated that the amazing men of ZAKA do not have to deal with, as they have with so many homicide bombers' remains, that they treat with the same reverence that they treat their victims.

Excellent post. No one can argue with the truth...except Kerry and the LLL's, and of course, the cult of islam.

Arafat wears that same stinking uniform everyday but somehow manages to never get a drop of blood on himself. For him to call anyone cowardly is just obscene. Same for Rantissi who, when he's not cowering underground, surrounds himself with bodyguards and children. Scum of the earth. May he and Arafat join Yassin in the very near future.

Psalm 9

1 I will praise you, O LORD , with all my heart;
I will tell of all your wonders.
2 I will be glad and rejoice in you;
I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.

3 My enemies turn back;
they stumble and perish before you.
4 For you have upheld my right and my cause;
you have sat on your throne, judging righteously.
5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked;
you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
6 Endless ruin has overtaken the enemy,
you have uprooted their cities;
even the memory of them has perished.

7 The LORD reigns forever;
he has established his throne for judgment.
8 He will judge the world in righteousness;
he will govern the peoples with justice.
9 The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a stronghold in times of trouble.
10 Those who know your name will trust in you,
for you, LORD , have never forsaken those who seek you.

11 Sing praises to the LORD , enthroned in Zion;
proclaim among the nations what he has done.
12 For he who avenges blood remembers;
he does not ignore the cry of the afflicted.

13 O LORD , see how my enemies persecute me!
Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death,
14 that I may declare your praises
in the gates of the Daughter of Zion
and there rejoice in your salvation.
15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their feet are caught in the net they have hidden.
16 The LORD is known by his justice;
the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands.
Higgaion. Selah
17 The wicked return to the grave,
all the nations that forget God.
18 But the needy will not always be forgotten,
nor the hope of the afflicted ever perish.

19 Arise, O LORD , let not man triumph;
let the nations be judged in your presence.
20 Strike them with terror, O LORD ;
let the nations know they are but men.
Selah

CTV just showed the bits and peices left of him. Just his head shoulders and a shredded bloody mess of nothing below that. He felt nothing because the part that got blown away had no feeling. That's better than he ever allowed the poor Jews he murdered by proxy.

hamas have announced they will kill every Jew in their homes.

So what else is new? Let them spew. Let them stew. Nothing has changed. they can't hate he jews anymore than they already did before his death.

Judging by the reactions I saw on CTV the Palestinians are in absolute shocked disbelief. The pain on their faces was almost as bad as the pain of the Israeli families wandering around in the ruins looking for their loved ones.

This is a major deep harsh psychological blow to the Palestinians. I saw defeat there in lots of faces.

As they showed the pictures of Yassin in pieces they had flashing underneath the headline about the headline about the anti-Semitic acts in Toronto. There is a fitting justice to that juxtaposition. Thanks to the IDF the hate mongers will not walk freely.

Malaysia Rulers Win in Rout

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's ruling coalition won an overwhelming triumph in national elections Sunday, capturing more than three-quarters of the seats in Parliament and ousting a rival Islamic party in at least one of two states it controls.
In endorsing Abdullah's call for religious moderation, voters turned against the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, which has urged the establishment of a strict Islamic state. During the last elections, in 1999, the Islamic party tapped resentment against Mahathir to score substantial gains among ethnic Malays, who constitute a majority of the country's population.

And what has been the cumulative result of all these efforts?

A definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

Aren't Ivy league intellectual elites running our State Department? Haven't they been in charge of our foreign policy for decades?

Is anybody else out there beginning to suspect that these egghead Kennedy School of International Relations graduates don't know what the FUCK they're doing?

All their "dialogue" is a smokescreen. There is a serious disconnect between what they are saying and what the Arab militant is hearing.

Shukri,

We are celebrating the death of a single man who was the founder and builder of a large and exceptionally murderous terror organization.

After 9-11 the Palestinians celebrated the deaths of 3000 innocent people who were simply at work, supporting their families.

The fact that people like you are unable to make this distinction is the reason that we do not and will not take you seriously.

To quote the great man, Ariel Sharon;

"He who calls for millions of martyrs is guilty. He who incites incessantly is guilty. He who finaces terrorism is guilty. He who dispatches terror is guilty.

We are celebrating the death of a single man who was the founder and builder of a large and exceptionally murderous terror organization.

But what was he personally responsible for? Does his words justify killing him?

After 9-11 the Palestinians celebrated the deaths of 3000 innocent people who were simply at work, supporting their families.

The Palestinians? You mean all the Palestinians came out on the streets in celebration? I should think that is somewhat of an overstatement since there are millions of Palestinians but only a few dozen who celebrated the 9/11 attacks. And what about the hundreds of Palestinians who donated blood for the 9/11 victims(look up news archives - its there)

The fact that people like you are unable to make this distinction is the reason that we do not and will not take you seriously

I am perfectly able to comprehend what little distinction there is between the two. However, in my mind both atrocities are acts of murder that serve no purpose other than blind killing, serving only to increase rage and hopelessness.

Hard to see how it isn't our problem. If we lose Israel to the Arabs, we lose an invasion route to the Mid East. What happens when US troops are done withdrawing from Iraq, and another Mid East despot takes it upon himself to invade the oil producing Gulf states? 2/3 of the world's oil is there. We just can't take that risk. Israel is our insurance policy.

Then maybe you're able to comprehend a people who have no respect for life, but only respect and glorify death...

That's why Yassin encouraged children to become Shaheeds.

You're not really aware of the sort of brainwashing that the Death Cults engage in, so you should look it up.

And don't say it's Israel's fault... learn your history - for years Israel never retaliated any of the bombings and countless civilians were killed... and I'm sure that you and your ilk never batted an eyelid.

"See how Mohamet's mangled and split open!
Ahead of me walks Ali in his tears,

And all the other souls that bleed and mourn
along this ditch were sowers of scandal and schism,
as they tore others apart, so are they torn ..."

/Palestinian mindset on

When are the Palestinians going to realize that their Europe buddies aren't really their friends?

If Europe wanted, they could certainly bring Israel to its knees, by cutting off trade and embargoing the nation. Nothing in, nothing out.

But they don't do that. They just send some figurehead leaders and clerics to meet with Arafat every so often, and say "tsk, tsk" anytime Israel attacks Palestine at all.

Europe makes a pretense of liking the Palestinians so they can keep the oil flowing.

So what should the Palestians do? They need to get Europe's attention to understand their predicament. And what better way to do that than to send some Suicide bombers into France, Greece, Spain, and the other countries that are pretending to be the PLO's friend but aren't.

Now if you're a suicide bomber, you know for certain that it's harder to get into Israel than into, say, Paris.
So why not concentrate on Europe for a while to get their attention?

Shukri: However, in my mind both atrocities are acts of murder that serve no purpose other than blind killing, serving only to increase rage and hopelessness.

9/11 wasn't an act of blind hatred. If it had been fully successful, it would have killed 50,000 American civilians in one go. (Fortunately, the buildings did not fall as if pole-axed, and GWB was spared the decision to go nuclear). Bin Laden got a surge of funding and recruits for his jihad - 9/11's success showed that bin Laden wasn't just a minor poseur - he was capable of destroying the very symbols of America's military and economic might.

Sheik Yassin's assassination wasn't an act of blind hatred either. The aftermath of his death will involve a power struggle among Hamas operatives. Just as Yassin purged all opponents to his leadership, his putative successor will be distracted, trying to simultaneously stay in power and avoid being killed by Israeli operatives. Distractions like this will put a real damper on his ability to organize more attacks against Israeli civilians.

But what really irks me is the audacity of the barbarians to say they're going to retaliate because of his death!! Hello?!? This death was long in coming, and was the just results of years of murders of innocents.

We need to face it (you paying attention, Spain?) - if we do nothing, they will continue to kill us. If we retaliate lightly, they'll use that to justify killing more. Thank goodness we have Bush (rather than Kerry or Clinton). Even Bush may not go far enough, but he's sure doing a heck of a good job.

Here's a theory- is Israel trying to incite a civil war within "Palestine"? Now that their 'spiritual leader' is a redd-ish wheelchair stain, I'm sure there will be a leadership vaccum within Hamas. Is there some kind of universally accepted succesor waiting in the wings, or did Hamas make the mistake of thinking this day would never come and didn't give much thought about who would succeed Yassin?

Also, it's an election year in Spain, Russia, Malaysia and the USA- but what about Israel?

I'm not really looking for Shaikh Yassin quotes. You can't imprison a man for what he says...unless there's no Freedom of Speech...wait, that only happens in dictatorships and tyrannies...like Saddams.

Anyway this Shukri guy want's us to buy the bigotted view that imams who preach violence, war and genocide are holy men who are innocent of their crime (because of course they're only fulfulling Gods will).

Interesting how people interpret my opinions. No offense or insult intended. So far I have not heard how Shaikh Yassin planned, approved or operated any attacks against Israel. Therefore I am unable to comprehend people's reaction to this, one of apparent joy. Why the joyousness? What exactly are we happy about. Is it because our sense of revenge has been fulfilled? I

don't get it... :(

You obviously don't know anything American law or about law in any country nor do you know anything about ethics or morality nor do you know anything about how the law pertains to war...

The united states does have more protections on freedom of speech than any other country in the world, but:

1. There are limits even in the US. see the supreme court decision Schenck v. United States 1919
"Words which, ordinarily and in many places, would be within the freedom of speech protected by the First Amendment may become subject to prohibition when of such a nature and used in such circumstances a to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils which Congress has a right to prevent. The character of every act depends upon the circumstances in which it is done."
...
"The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic. It does not even protect a man from an injunction against uttering words that may have all the effect of force. Gompers v. Bucks Stove & Range Co., 221 U.S. 418, 439. The question in every case is whether the words used are used in such circumstances and are of such a nature as to create a clear and present danger that they will bring about the substantive evils that Congress has a right to prevent."
[Link: www.bc.edu...]

2. Conspiring to commit a crime has never been considered freedom of speech, one does not have to participate in a crime to be considered a conspirator. Conspiracy has always been a felony.

3. Hate speech is a crime even in the united states (see #1). Any preacher who preached the thing Shaikh Yassin has preached would be put in jail in the United States in any time during our history... and all other first world countries have stricter controls on hate speech than the US does.

I won't bother to go any further except to state that you've misjuged America if you think our constitution protects freedom of speech above life. Life always comes first in all of the west.

You have not made the principled appeal to our values that you think you have. The legal interpretation of our constitution is clear. The main reason for freedom of speech was to make democracy possible, not to allow mobs to kill innocents or monsters to conspire and roam free. That is not part of our values.

Now go away you disgusting monster.

35. Your right, Hamas is a movement for national liberation!

They are more like the American Revolutionary Army and Arafat is like George Washington. Their "war" is to restore the Palestinian lands stolen by Israel.

Al Qaeda is different. I agree. They are more like a religion and the "war" against them is as much a war of ideas.

Still from the US/Israeli perspective I believe they should be fought the same. Basically through infiltration, intelligence and legitimate security we really, really need to catch the bombers/terrorists. Then we need to put them on trial.

Yassin should have been capture and put on trial. So should Osama. What is controversial about following tried and true methods of justice? Isn't 9/11 just a crime? Aren't suicide bombings crimes?

Doesn't anyone want to find out who did these things?

and this:

17. Yes it is.

Nothing justifies Israeli targeted killing.

Nothing.

Nothing

Prove Hamas' crimes if they did so many. I think the perpetrators mostly are dead. Catch the bomb makers and put them on trial. What a joke Israel justice has become. The country that kidnapped Eichmann and put him on trial.

Israeli Justice is non existant.

Chicago Democrat, don't you know ... how unfortunate.

Excellent post, you are a scholar indeed.

In international law, there is the precedent of Julius Streicher, lawfully hanged by the Nuremberg Tribunal for inciting genocide.
Yassin, unlike even Streicher, was in actual direct control of an organization that acted on his incitement.

Re: Chicago Democrat
The British didn't put Heydrich on trial, we didn't put Yamamoto on trial (Y was not even a criminal) but the justice and necessity of these targeted killings is beyond reasonable dispute.

The Palestinians declared war, their tools like Chicago Democrat agree that it is war; let it be war, and let the standards be consistent.

Thanks guys.

I can thank my high school law/justice class for actually teaching me the history of constitutional law. I'm always disappointed that Americans don't understand how their own system works. Though the (just graduated) teacher was quite disapointed. He tried to make it a college course, and we wouldn't study quite that hard.

We should post something like this every time some troll or jihadi claims that America (or anyone else) should allow incitement. Or put it in the FAQ.

I'm also proud of my post earlier today about how international diplomacy limited what Bush could say about the purposes of the Iraqi war. Those ideas need to be spread a bit too... Obviously if Bush had made a big speech about how all of the despotic regimes in the middle east need to be destablized and the people empowered so that facist terrorism can end from within, we would have had no bases to stage the Iraq war from, Tony Blair couldn't have supported us (and might have gotten a vote of no confidence), we would have had no pretext in the UN nor any chance of getting the security council to go along, we would have had no allies... So the arguement that Bush didn't have any goals other than WMD or he would have pushed those earlier is nonsense. If Bush had pushed those goals publically, there could have been no war.

So what did Zulubaby say, everiste?

The Palestinians are going nuts.

Tens of thousands of Palestinians, many in tears, poured into Gaza City streets. Gunmen fired into the air and militants threw dozens of pipe-bombs to express their outrage.

"Sheikh Ahmed Yassin rest in peace. They will never enjoy rest. We will send death to every house, every city, every street in Israel," militants shouted over loudspeakers.

They don't have safty laws like California on the forth of July do they? I think we're allowed to recordings of real fireworks and to run the fireworks screen saver on the 4th in this state.

Living near a central road near Tel-Aviv : we've already had two false bomb-alerts - meaning everything gets to a standstill and the road is blocked. And, in my very town a wild Palestinian was swaying an ax at passers-by. We're in for interesting times here - we'll stand tall.

There are always those that - for money and other selfish reasons - transport them to here. Moderate in what exactly? He certainlyn was not moderate in his hatered of infidels at large and Israel in particular.

What is a "moderate Muslim" anyway? Is it something like "moderate Christian". Is there such thing as "moderate Buddhist? ... or "moderate Jew"? heh ...

The term "moderate Muslim" gives away the hateful and violent nature of Islam. Otherwise, there would be no need for this preposterous term that does not have an equivalent that make sense when applied to the followers of any other religion.

"Moderate Muslim" is more than just foolish term. If you think of implications, the positive (PC) term "moderate" is brought in to overwrite the negative, which is actually "Muslim", ie Islam. And, mind you, it'd done in the name of PC. Nice,

# 519 Mr. Pol,

3 lightly injured. And yes, you were right, he was driven to Israel from "the territories" and they're looking for the driver and car.

The owner of a kiosk/coffee bar saw this Palestinian creature wanking the axe at a girl's head, he jumped over the counter and started running after the creep. By the way he injured another two people and then the coffee bar owner got him and got on top of him. A police car accidently driving by arrested him. You should have heard the cop : "when the Palestinian was actually aware that his life was in danger the look in his eyes changed and he started pleading with me for his life." So much for the "terrorist-heroes".

I'm so damn proud living in Israel. When I look for example what happens in Holland (the country I was born) - there an old woman was beaten to death by two boys ( a while ago ) because she asked them to be careful riding their bike. A lot of by-standers, and nobody jumped in to help her.

Jack Straw shows once again that he has no idea about what goes on in the world! Anyway, I am glad he disapproves as this proves that the action was just and necessary.

544 V the K  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 2:50:56am

I like to believe that evil people, after death, experience all the pain they visited on others in their lifetimes.

If this is true, Sheik Yassin, is experiencing the terror of a child sitting on a bus in the moments just before a bomb-vest explodes, he is experiencing the searing agony of white-hot shards of metal cutting through his flesh, he is experiencing the depthless grief of a family knowing a mother, a father, a child is never coming home again.

He has been experiencing this for several hours now.

Except to him it seems like several hundred thousand years.

And he has the rest of eternity to go.

549 Ayatollah Ghilmeini-raising his voice in song!  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 3:31:33am

One wants to cheer but the truth is all that took place is Israel took out the trash. Garbage collection is a necessary and continuing obligation of a civilized society.

I must also chastise this blog- not one person looked at the words "spiritual leader" and lashed out at one of the worst abuses of language in history. Spirituality implies a journey of the soul and Yassin's journey never varied in a straight line from hate to hell; the only thing spiritual about him was the sick use of the idea of G-d and holiness as means to inflict unbridled indescriminate evil upon other human beings as part of his journey.

Celebrate if you want, but many more will have to fall before the Palestinians lose the taste in their hearts for genocide.

One final correction, Arafat, though he will make appropriately sad noises, is actually happy about this, Yassin was an enemy who challenged his power.

Israel struck a blow for its survival today; here enemies cannot doubt after this that they too can and will get it.

550 J.D.  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 3:32:23am

Got home late from the airport and heard the good news. My husband had on CNN and as we watched, he became infuriated at the coverage. "Every scene they're showing is of this guy being loved and kissed - nothing about the death and destruction he's responsible for...they ought to take out Arafat next..." he ranted for quite some time. It has taken awhile for him to really grasp the big picture and to recognize for himself the insidious bias of most of the mainstream media's reporting editorializing. This one finally put him over the top. Yea!

"Let's remember that Hamas is a terrorist organization and Sheik Yassin himself has been heavily involved in terrorism," U.S. National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice told CBS News' The Early Show.

Condoleeza Rice refuses to condemn Yassin extermination.

557 Ed Moran:Abu I Don't Fall Down!  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 3:57:08am

From JBT's Link

1 of 8
Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Yassin, assassinated by Israel on Monday, was an inspiration for disillusioned young Palestinians.

2 of 8
He devoted his early life to religious scholarship.

5 of 8
But he was frequently critical of the Middle East peace process. (I guess ordering suicide bombings in one way to be "critical" of the peace process-Ed)

7 of 8
His hatred of the United States was also well known. (Goodness knows, we deserved it, eh?)

8 of 8
Hamas support was boosted by its charitable activities and support for Palestinians suffering economic hardship. (He does look like an Arab Santa Claus, after all-Ed)

558 Lyana  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 3:59:02am

Wow - too many conflicting feelings for a Monday morning (but what a great way to start the week)! A glimmer of hope, relief that one source of evil has been eliminated, a little guilt for cheering over someone's death, anger at the duplicity, ignorance and stupidity of most of the world and the media.

And then the solemn feeling that it's probably going to get worse for awhile before it gets better; I'll be watching for news from Israel with that familiar knot in my stomach.

Forget the news media and the rest of the world. At least, here, today all of us are Jews. Thank you, Israel, for doing what needs to be done to survive without sinking to the barbarism surrounding you. We pray we have your resolve when it comes to our doorstep.

559 lawhawk  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 4:00:24am

So, the Palestinians will whine, seethe, and rage some more. Big deal. Another one of their leaders killed by Israelis. So what. That's supposed to induce the Palestinians into a killing frenzy or increase the number of attacks on Israelis, as if all the prior attacks occurred in a vacuum?

The Palestinians rage against Israel's existence, not merely just against Israel's occupation of the West Bank or Gaza. There's no greater provocation than Israel's very existence, and that's the great unwritten rule by those Palestinian apologists out there who refuse to speak the truth about Palestinian intentions.

Israel eliminated a terrorist leader. One who spurred others to kill civilians going to work, playing, sleeping, partying and enjoying family celebrations, not to mention loving life itself.

Now, the Palestinians are saying that this will unleash further waves of attacks? Israel should completely take the gloves off - if there's a gathering of masked gunmen anywhere in the Gaza or West Bank - they're targets of opportunity.

To the Israeli people. Good luck and may you see yourselves, families and friends through this difficult time.

To the IDF, good hunting.

I'm imagining how the BBC would treat the news of Hitler's suicide in the bunker if it happened today

Adolf Hitler, A Life in Pictures

1 of 8
Adolf Hitler was beloved by the German people for restoring pride in their Aryan heritage

2 of 8
Young Hitler had a deep fascination with the arts.

3 of 8
Corporal Hitler was wounded in a gas attack while bravely defending the Fatherland

4 of 8
Hitler's magnetic personality allowed him to galvanize his supporters during the darkest periods of the Depression. Hitler is seen here addressing his followers in a Munich beer hall

5 of 8
Adolf Hitler modernized the German highway system.

6 of 8
Hitler modernized the German Air Force

7 of 8
His dislike of the Jews was well known

8 of 8
Nazi support was boosted by its charitable activities and support for Aryans suffering economic hardship

Great news to hear first thing in the morning. We should be dancing in the streets. Hamas is blaming the US for the bombing, so if they try to blow up any US planes, we'll know it's our fault that we made them so angry.

This makes Jack Straw's comments sound even more stupid. But I suppose he was just preparing to howl with the pack of dogs he was about to meet in Brussels.

570 Ben-ami  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 4:58:02am

a) Was it murder? Nope - murder is killing an innocent person. "If someone comes to kill you, rise up and kill him first."

b) What's all this "old man in a wheeldchair" BS? The man was not some sweet old sould. Sounds positively anti-progressive to me. The fact that he was old and used a wheelchair doesn't make him any less of a violent, dangerous, and (let's face it) effective killer. All those Hamas murderering human bombs were acting as agents of Yassin, z'mach shmo.

571 scott in east bay  Mon, Mar 22, 2004 5:08:51am

The fact that he was old and used a wheelchair doesn't make him any less of a violent, dangerous, and (let's face it) effective killer

All this talk that because he was in a wheelchair, he was somehow harmless is nothing short of handicap bigotry. The handicapped are people, same as everyone, with all the ranges of behaviour. The same applies to comments about his age. Old people can't be evil? What kind of age-ist statement is that?

Apologies for the length of this post, but it really is a terrific email from Dr. Stephen Plaut. I am on his mailing list:

Subject: Let them Caterwaul - It is Time for Celebration

It does not Matter what the Israel Bashers Now Say
By Steven Plaut

It does not Matter what the Israel Bashers Now Say

And it does not matter that it is much too little and much too late.

It does not matter that the anti-Semitic scum of the world is already
whining that the assassination of the Bloody Sheikh, the genocidal
Yassin, was "illegal" and an "obstacle" to peace. Any peace for
which the killing of Yassin is an "obstacle" is one that should be
prevented at all costs.

It does not matter that Israeli leftists, including Avraham Poraz from
the Shinui party, are already denouncing the killing of the sheikh and
would no doubt also denounce a targeted assassination of Hitler had they
been alive in 1943, or the targeted assassination of Haman.

It does not matter that the Sharon people are already trying to offset
the international heat by expounding the new "goodwill gestures"
they hope to make to appease Arafat and his stormtroopers. Gaza was the
Biblical military center of the Philistines, and Sharon is officially
pledged to recreating a center for Philistine barbarism there.

It does not matter that all those do-gooders and bleeding hearts now
caterwauling about Israel's "provocation" have long forgotten that
under Oslo it was the legal obligation of the PLO itself to assassinate
Sheikh Yassin, and that it was only in exchange for such an obligation
that Yossi Beilin and his sandbox crew promised to turn the West Bank
and Gaza over to the PLO in the first place.

It does not matter that even as Arafat is screaming his love for the
genocidal sheikh and proclaiming official PLO support for this his
beloved comrade in arms and for Yassin's program of genocide, the Left
is denouncing Israel's "act of terrorism".

It does not matter that Ariel Sharon showed cowardice in not also
mowing down the Hamas "mourners" marching in the Bloody Sheikh's
funeral procession.

It does not matter that the same people screaming how inhumane it was
for Israel to kill the mass murderer who happened to be confined to a
wheelchair never had anything to say about the Palestinian terrorists
tossing Leon Klinghoffer overboard.

It does not matter that the British Foreign Minister thinks
assassinating the nazi sheikh was an awful provocation, but cheered to
the skies when the sons of Saddam Hussein were dispatched and their
photos splashed on the network screens.

It does not matter that the media will quickly revert to its position
that Israel must be prevented from undertaking any action against
terrorism besides total capitulation.

It does not matter that this was the first act in well over a decade by
Israel that gave some credence to the slogan of "Never Again", a
decade otherwise characterized by craven cowardice and appeasement.

It does not matter that the same Bush administration and US media who
spent the weekend cheering because they thought the number two al-Qaida
leader had been killed in Pakistan are now suddenly all squeamish about
the killing of Arab Islamofascist terrorist leaders.

It does not matter that the Israeli political establishment is
maintaining a blind eye to the open identification with the Hamas and
its leaders by so many Israeli Arabs.

It does not even matter that Israeli super-comic Eli Yatzpen, well
known for his impression of the nazi sheikh, will now need to come up
with some new material.

It does not matter that Israel's Tenured Traitors are already turning
out their Op-Eds for the world newspapers who lease their services in
order to denounce Israel's "crime".

It does not matter that Yassin should have been killed decades ago and
that he would have been vaporized last year had not Ariel Sharon feared
using a heavy-enough bomb, one that might have produced "collateral
damages".

It does not matter that some Israeli Far Leftists were already
endorsing "negotiations" with the Hamas and so will now declare that
Israel has lost a golden opportunity to make peace.

Gaza is where the injured Samson took his revenge on the
barbarians.

The world politicians and the media may be bewailing this
uncharacteristic manifestation of Israeli courage. Let them. For, you
see, the very best commentary on the effects of the assassination of
this nazi sheikh is not on the BBC nor on CNN nor in the NY Times. The
best commentary is Chapter 15 of Exodus:

The Nations have heard of it and are enraged,
Panic and shuddering have seized the denizens of Philistine Gaza,
The leaders of Edom are frightened, while the champions of Moab
tremble,
And the courage of the pagan Canaanites melts away.
Fear and Panic have fallen upon them.
For Your might arm crushes them like a stone, while Your people
proceed ahead.

2. YASSIN EMBRACED AS MARTYR BY ARAFAT, MUCH LIKE JOGGER KHOURI
By Michael Widlanski 22 March 2004
Yasser Arafat's Palestinian National Authority publicly embraced the
slain Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, leader of the HAMAS movement, as a "brother
warrior," following his fiery death by helicopter-borne Israeli
missiles.
