This is excellent. World premier America-hating academic Noam Chomsky now has a blog: Turning the Tide. No joke. Hosted at Zmag. Where else? (Hat tip: Kennedy.)

I wonder if he’s checking his referrer logs every three minutes like most new bloggers? If so, he’s in for a big surprise. Hi, Noam!

Can you imagine how the bullshit is going to fly in that comments section?

It's hideous, what is with the acid yellow? And my least favourite font, Arial. Yech. He should have hired Charles.

People in the more civilized sectors of the world (what we call "the third world," or the "developing countries") often burst out laughing when they witness an election...

Yeah, those more civilized developing countries like Yemen or Rwanda.

Unbelievable, and I mean that literally. How could anyone with an IQ over 60 take this seriously?

11 Abu McKinney  Wed, Mar 24, 2004 4:00:26pm

I wonder if evolution's eve will post comments there?

Does he always refer to himself in the third person?

Welcome to Turning The Tide

This blog will include brief comments on diverse topics of concern in our time. They will sometimes come from the ZNet sustainer forum system where Noam interacts through a forum of his own, sometimes from direct submissions, sometimes culled from mail and other outlets -- always from Noam Chomsky.

My God, I've read instructions on putting together children's toys that were better written than that garbage.

I always feard reading Chumpsky. I just kind of figured that the man had a Saurman like tounge and his writing would muddle even the most brilliant of minds.

Turns out, he's simply a few fries short of a Happy Meal and there's plenty of fools who think he's the toy inside.

What a buffoon. Maybe I'll start writing comments that make little sense and see what happens.

Yes, but when you consider the gubernatorial roles that don't descend appropriatly from the people, then you'll always have retroactive agreements between both the "Corporations" and those who don't understand the main concept of liberty.

Whether Bush believes, or even understands, the economic policies of his administration I have no idea

Great way to start off a blog, man. In the space of one clause, he managed to be disrespectful to the office of the president and to insult the intelligence of the man himself.

He's not even pretending to be an academic any more, is he?

22 Roll-aid  Wed, Mar 24, 2004 4:07:52pm

Hold your breath before plunging in. Or to warm up a bit, try DU and then over to Indymedia to get into the swing of things.

All of three posts so far. The "Structual Adjustment" which begins with the IMF quote is a hoot. He holds up Brazil of all places as a showcase for a true democracy.

Brazil's better than some but they have a helluva long way to go. I think he likes them because Lula is an elected socialist. Comrade Chom's criteria for democracy is how close they are to a LLL autocracy. I think he'd praise Stalin because he collectivized the farms..that he liquidated a few tens of thousands of people would of no concern whatsoever.

It's gonna be fun.

To all:

Here is the anti-chumpsky:

[Link: www.leftwatch.com...]

Noam Chomsky

Noam Chomsky, a linguist at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, revolutionized linguistics with his innatist theory of language, but he is perhaps best known for his left wing political views. Although rarely receiving much attention from mainstream media, Chomsky is an icon on college campuses and within the radical political movement which formed from the ashes of the New Left.

There is plenty of material on the web about Chomsky, but unfortunately almost all of it is bland hero worship which ignores the fact that while Chomsky is certainly right about many things, he is wrong about numerous others and is ultimately not all that far from those he subjects to intense scrutiny and criticism.

This page contains original essays pointing out some of Chomsky’s factual errors and his tendency to not apply the same standards to the Left that he applies (for the most part correctly) to the Right.

I just got home from the anti-antisemitism rally north of Toronto. There was an impressive turnout, about 2,000 persons in total, and speakers representing every concievable political and ethnic group.

It was kinda dreary inside the theatre where the speeches were taking place. But outside, there were some teenagers (maybe 100) staging a rally of their own. They were dancing, chanting pro-zionist slogans in English and Hebrew, waving p-p-provocative placards.

OT...Anti Semitism Meeting in Toronto Tonight

Just came in from a meeting here in Toronto where thousands turned up to protest a rash of anti-Semitic incidents that have taken place over the past 2 weeks.

I was outside as the main auditorium was full and was down by the TV screen in the outside atrium.

The Police Chief, various Jewish organizations, Heads of Muslim organizations, Anglican church's, Heads of United Church's, Left Wing Politicos, Right Wing Politicians, etc were all there to lend support.

Some would say lend support but when it comes to the lefty's of the group, I say they were there more so because they knew they couldn't dare not to be, and some were politicians that aren't even in the public eye all that much anymore...although, overall, it was a fantastic turnout and the Jewish Community pulled together very well tonight.

Point?
Standing beside the pole I was leaning on, were a couple of guys that kept booing anytime a LLL politician was mentioned.

I giggled each time, but one older Jewish man asked them nicely to shush, suggesting that they should be happy that these men were there to support them, yadda, yadda, yadda...

I couldn't help but wonder if any of these guys were possibly visitors to LGF or [Link: www.israelforum.com...]
?

Anyone?

Great turn out but I must admit I was struck by how many Jews clapped for each LLL politician, yet the clapping died down when the more conservative speakers were mentioned. ;-(

Other than the one or two guys I mention that were boo'ing them!
So, was anyone here there tonight?
If so, were you one of the ones voicing your opinons about the left leaning politicians?

Gee, it sure would be nice if actually provided links to his statistics that he quotes, wouldn't it?

He never does. Anyone catch that horrible grammer sentence in his first article? John Dewey really said all that? What a pompous ass!

People in the more civilized sectors of the world (what we call "the third world," or the "developing countries") often burst out laughing when they witness an election in which the choices are two men from very wealthy families with plenty of clout in the very narrow political system, who went to the same elite university and even joined the same secret society to be socialized into the manners and attitudes of the rulers, and who are able to participate in the election because they have massive funding from highly concentrated sectors of unaccountable power that cast over society the shadow called "politics," as John Dewey put it.

He should have hired Charles.

That made me laugh.

BTW I would bet $$$ that the big man will not lower himself to actually debate in the threads, that he'll rarely even be the guy who posts his articles.

He will not, in short, become a blogger.

Besides, Chomsky, post senility, never debates anyone even when inteviewed. He just makes stuff up so that he can be dismissive.

This will be one boring blog.

Wonder if he'll try to drum up support for John "Bush Lite" Kerry.

I also don't know whether to be relieved or alarmed that he's so far avoiding his weakest points. The war on terror and middle hell, I mean the mid east.

Chomsky likes to talk about democracy while supporting every dictator he has ever come across and living his entire pathetic, coddled life in the seat of academia, the single most un-democratic place in America.

The rough and tumble world of the blogosphere is the closest he has ever been to a democracy, and I just bet he doesn't like it very much at all.

John Dewey is the theorist behind the incredibly destructive modern educational system. I hate him with a passion for ruining generations of minds.

evariste I agree but he did he say all that or is Naom's grasp of grammer so pathetic that he would make that mistake?

I think that BS quote is pure Chomsky; the Dewey part is the bit about the shadow of politics.

I guess his grasp of grammer is that bad.

Agh! I've been to his blog once and already I've caught his cooties!

LOL! Anyone check out the outraged comments from the aL cubed?

96 Ed Moran:Abu Dead Murderers in Wheelchairs?  Wed, Mar 24, 2004 5:26:16pm
Chimpsky is referring to Skull and Bones, which, as everyone knows, is a cover for the Zionist World Conspiracy. The clever part, Bush and Kerry don't know they are controlled by a Jewish cabal, they think they are part of the Illuminati and the Freemasons. That is how fiendishly clever the Jews are.

Chimsky is just upset with the ZWC because he was dishonorably discharged for being unable to control his desire to fellate "hot young Arab studs".

His arguments will have been so thoroughly stripped bare and flayed by the great unwashed that, for the sake of his reputation, he will have little choice. His pathetic logical inadequacies and inconsistencies will be exposed to the public ridicule they have been previously sheltered from by fawning academics and the New York Times. All visitors to Noam's site shall learn very very quickly that Emperor Chomsky has no clothes. They may even ask themselves "What is Little Green Footballs"? Men like Noam can't stand criticism and will not brook it for very long. Especially not from people they feel are contemptible because they do not share their elitist academic background. I salute you all!

evariste,

And say you try to copy just a few sentences or something, it won't let you select only those sentences?

Yes. Chomsky's isn't doing that, but at least three sites I was at yesterday were doing that (I'm using IE-6). I tried to highlight a couple of lines and half the page highlighted, no matter how many times I tried. Unfortunately, I cleared my history and cache today and can't remember exactly which they were.

136 Alyosha  Wed, Mar 24, 2004 6:11:57pm

Just fill his site with Chomskybot comments and see if the LLLs can tell the difference:

On the other hand, any associated supporting element suffices to account for an important distinction in language use. We will bring evidence in favor of the following thesis: this selectionally introduced contextual feature is, apparently, determined by an abstract underlying order. By combining adjunctions and certain deformations, most of the methodological work in modern linguistics is to be regarded as the system of base rules exclusive of the lexicon. A consequence of the approach just outlined is that the earlier discussion of deviance is necessary to impose an interpretation on a stipulation to place the constructions into these various categories. This suggests that this analysis of a formative as a pair of sets of features is rather different from the strong generative capacity of the theory.

Uhh, which butt-hole -I think Chimsky has one at each end --but, you have two opposable thumbs, haven't you?

Enough of the ad homynyms, already!

My point:

Lord Alanbroke, Britain's CIGS for most of WW2, and, more importantly, the one responsible for reining in some of Churchill's more lurid military fantasies, kept diaries. The published versions were originally edited by Sir Arthur Bryant and released in two volumes --"Turn of the Tide" and "Triumph in the West".

Is Chimsky's semi-appropriation of the first title a copyright violation? Informed readers, let us know.

Gnome of MIT,

Since you are such a fan of divestment, and you seem to think the US is to blame for most of the world's problems, have you ever considered divesting your US assets?

The major assets I've identified that you own include:

36,155 square foot home near Cambridge
13,503 square foot vacation home
four boats

Think of all the good you could do by divesting yourself from your US assets!!! What an example you could set.

To show how dedicated you are to ending income inequality, you could give me one of the houses. Hell, I'll settle for a boat. I don't have any, and you have FOUR! Is that fair?

I would appreciate a reply, thought I don't think you have the stones to respond.

I thought Chomsky was an overrated idiot before I knew he was a LLL. I do a lot of volunteer phonics tutoring (if your kids have reading or spelling problems, fix it with phonics, see [Link: www.nrrf.org,...] they have a free reading grade level test and also lists of good phonics books) so I did a bunch of research about reading and anything associated with that, and everyone mentioned this Chomsky guy like he was the greatest. (I went to the Air Force Academy, so Chomsky was never mentioned at my school.) I tried reading one of his books, and had to stop after a chapter, it was so wacky and poorly written. And this is in his own field! When I later learned he was a LLL hero, I thought, well, that explains it.

It was a little bit annoying to read "JOOS" fifty thousand times.

He has HTML turned off. He is at MIT, I wonder if he could ask someone with half a brain to come help him turn it on.

Chomsky is a greater threat to America than the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters.

In other words, he's fiction (full of shit).

Some hilarious stuff over there, but my favorite was this one of evariste's:

Deepak wrote: "I think the single biggest failure of the intellectual left is its inability to convey its message adequately to the denizens of the American heartland."No, perhaps the biggest failure of the denizens of the American heartland is its failure to force the effete, out of touch with reality fascist stooges that call themselves intellectuals in this country to move to Cuba.

Great site Noam! And the comments section is outstanding! Lots of lively talk, plenty of porn, weather reports, I say your blog is a hit!

188 Zack  Wed, Mar 24, 2004 7:45:50pm

Serial spamming of the Chomsker's comments is half way to the moon by now. Some of it is mindless, but if you have the patience to scroll through a few miles of JEWS, JOOS, and ISRAILEES, check out the encyclopedically voluminous gem titled "Dictionary of Obscure Sexual Terms." Then the next post is an instant classic:

I want you to hurt me, daddy. I want you to hurt me bad.

Come on. *Don't hold back.*

Alas, poor Noam - drowning in a foaming sea of sputum and jism.

Tovarishch, what's with the capitalization and spacing? I've got XP and IE6 and what I see is (transliterated) "Da, tovaR I SHCH." Let me give it a shot: ??, ???. Nope ...

Everybody,

I've been disappointed with some of the "comments." Yeah, I think the one-liners from "Pol Pot" and the like are funny, but repeating the J-word, pasting long Arabic passages, etc. are just lame. It is possible to attack Chomsky without going ad hominem or wasting space with non sequiturs. I admit that I used to call the guy names on my blog (e.g., "al-Chom," "Noamuhammad'), especially in my early posts, but why bother? The absurdity of his "theory" is sufficiently self-destructive.

Nah. I think Chomsky has almost as much disdain for the public as Arafat has for Jews.

The idea of him actually interacting with posters was about as likely as Arafat staring in a "Mr. Roger's Neighborhood" like program for Israeli children in order to build good will.

Well, from my vantage point I didn't see any in the crowd.

Now, admittedly, I am obviously not Jewish and sometimes I can make a mistake about someone's ethnicity when I run into some Israelis, or perhaps Moroccan Jews, etc...but I am inclined to believe the two or so I did wonder about were Jewish, other than the heads of various Muslim groups.

But judging from their accents, they were all Canadian borne and bred.

I didn't see any African Americans, which I was hoping to have done.

I did see a few Chinese people but generally it was a predominantly Jewish Crowd with some Wasp's such as myself thrown in ;-)

I must say, it was very well organized and it will send a Strong Message.

The reverse side of this is that some who are anti-Semitic may see this rally as further evidence that the Jews are to powerful.
For we have had a lot of problems here recently with black on black gang violence.
I can already imagine the black community leaders will make some complaints about this.
There is a great difference in the two community's though.

The Black community's leaders have been denying that a problem exists for years and have been trying to lay the blame at the feet of our police department, crying racism.
Therefore, if they aren't willing to help themselves, no one else will be either.

The Jewish community of course, is an entirely wiser group and understand only too well that it is a problem that must be addressed and not denied.

Of course though, I dont really need to tell you that!
;-)

But as I said, it was well organized and the auditorium was full by the time I got there, an hour before it was too start, and 2 nearby Gymnasiums were full with people listening to the audio and then I was outside in an ampitheater with full audio and visuals and it was packed.
Almost too busy

Ok, understanding the mob mentality, the comments on his blog were amusing to read, at least the fairly intelligent ones but the Spam was downright embarrassing.

And whoever pasted this thread there was an utter fool.
Sorry, I call them as I see them, whoever you were.

Not only will it now attract about a million LLL's it only reinforces the stereotype that the LLL's have of conservative people.

The advantage that LLLs do have is that there are many in the world that are followers and will choose to side with the likes of Chomsky, simply, because, they are mistaken in their understanding of his intellect and everyone prefers to side with who they believe is a winner.

If you were undecided and went to that Blog, who would you want to side with especially so if you pollitically knowledgable and are just trying to sort thought it all?
The ones who are pseudo intellectuals, or the ones who come across as mindless?

Ok yes, it was amusing.
But I bet he made quite a few new converts thanks to the mob mentality that took place here last night.

I feel you lost more people than you won.

Just my 2 cents. ;-(

Ha Ha Ha LOL! I just posted some really funny stuff over that Chumpsky's blog! Man, the nazi won't know what hit him! I wrote JEW HATER like about 600 gazillion times, man! Then I posted under the name Pol Pot and Ara-rat, and stuff like that! LOL!

Now I know who to blame for the sheer stupidity that took place because of a mob mentality.

Please refrain in future from making the rest of us look like idiots!
Or immature and hormonal 16 year old boys ;-(

242 Beagle  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 4:28:17am

I thought maybe one post of "JEWS" ad infinitum was funny. Then, it started to remind me of the scene in The Shining: "all work and no play makes Noam a dull boy" or something.

I'm planning on waiting for Noam to get warmed up before posting there. Now, I'm thinking I won't get the chance.

It's one thing to point out the his obvious lack of knowledge and from-the-nether-regions statistics -- but the neverending scrolling is going to cause them to take drastic measures, and confirms what they already believe, troll wise.

Even if he deserves it, and he does, I suggest not doing it.

243 sharona  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 4:31:28am

Good heavens, his prose reads like some academic treatise.

Even if I were to agree with his viewpoint (and that, my fellow lizardoids, would be your cue to have me institutionalized), I'd be nodding off before getting through a couple of posts.

He'd do well to hire a 'ghost writer', at least to liven up things a bit!

244 zorkmidden  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 4:56:38am

From Chomsky's Welcome Comments:

I guess I shouldn't be surprized that the lunatic right would come out of the woodwork to heap their filth on the conscience of our nation, but for myself, a blog by Noam Chomsky is the best news since Chomsky Chat; actually better.

The conscience of our nation? WTH?

Noam is our nation's conscience. Kerry is our nation's heart. Nader is our nation's brain. I'm our nation's stomach, and I want to throw up!

245 quark2  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:14:37am

I have to agree. The bitingly funny sarcasm was a delight to read in Chompsky's comments. But the spam and the pr0n were way over the top. I would hate to see Charle's comments be attacked in such a way in reciprocation.
Most likely the comments will be turned off, because of the instant abuse. It won't be worth reading his blog when this happens. :(

246 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:16:33am

I haven't read the comments here yet, but I see some of you good peoples have been having fun in Gnome's comments section.

Bad lizards! Bad! Don't pee on his carpet!

dB^)

247 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:20:05am

OK. The infinite "JEWS" posts suck. Big time.

It would be nice to behave well enough that the turd doesn't turn comments off, while still fisking his entries.

248 zorkmidden  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:30:45am

#245 quark2

It won't be worth reading his blog when this happens. :(

It wasn't worth reading before, either... The guy doesn't make any sense.

But you're right, the situation deteriorated very fast. It was annoying to scroll past the double and triple posted threads, the porn, etc. I'm surprised Noam didn't have a moderator or someone, to yank things out. If this had happened here, Charles would have been on the case in a snap.

Anyway, I hope everyone here got it out of their system, and now we're all going to be civil to Noam, right minions?

249 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:31:30am

Oh dear. That was a pretty embarrassing performance.

Hopefully it won't happen again.

MY $0.02. FWIW.

250 quark2  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 5:37:50am

@248 zorkmidden

I should have made myself clearer. :)
He's an idiot of the first water to be sure. With no comments to fisk him vigorously, there's no reason to even
go to his site.
I hope all have gotten the idiocy out of their systems as well. Let the true games begin! :)

#250 quark2

Let the true games begin! :)

I wonder if he'll have a separate "room" for the "Israeli-Palestinian conflict" like in the DU site: "Put the Jews elsewhere, they don't belong in polite company!!"

252 bohman  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:02:17am

the pr0n was funny stuff though, albeit misplaced.

253 BIG  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:03:15am

I was able to post there, so the comments section is still working. I'll wait a few days before I go into troll mode. I would like to see some pure leftists posting there so I can have some fun with them.

It would be nice to be a pain in the @ss like andagain.

254 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:04:15am

Can somebody help me out?

What is the stuff that looks like an (this?) lgf thread pasted in gnome's comments?

I found my name as the auther of one of them, but I didn't write it.

Did somebody just make up a thread?

WTH?

255 Deathberg  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:08:07am

If just 1 in 50 of the people that attended that rally were willing to pick up a knife or baseball bat or garrote or any other weapon permissible under Canadian law, that would be more than enough to give those criminal Muslims one hell of a fright.

256 zorkmidden  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:11:17am

#254 Thom

I found my name as the auther of one of them, but I didn't write it.

Somebody did a bad cut-and-paste.

257 zenbone  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:12:39am

Great. I just posted on Chomsky's Biglog as barnyard pig.

What a bag of wind he is.

You'd figure a linguist would know how to communicate in a succint fashion. But that is not what he wants to do because he wouldn't appear so intileckshual.

258 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:15:10am

#256 zorkmidden

Hmm. Where did this person find the thread to paste?

E.g., in the comments pasted in Chompsky's blog, someone is ranting about GARDEN NOAMs. I searched lgf and there's only one (well, two now) references to "garden noam".

I'm just trying to figure out where this person got the thread to paste ...

259 quark2  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:19:08am

@254 Thom

Some one earlier said they had posted all of the comments from this LGF thread.
Looks like it's rapidly getting out of hand.
It probably wouldn't do any good to make a disclaimer on it now.
The owner of the site needs to have a monitor, or it will get to where he won't be able to leave the comments open.

OT
militarybrat check yer mail. :)

260 zorkmidden  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:56:35am

#258 Thom

His comments section is so out-of-control that it makes it very difficult to search. People were also copying and repasting from Noam's thread (not just the LGF thread), so it's very likely that your name just got pasted on someone else's comments on that thread, not the LGF thread.

One of my comments in the Noam blog was copied and pasted onto someone else's name as well. I didn't mind, it wasn't that funny of a comment... :-p

His site is so poorly designed... Typical.

261 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 6:59:13am

#260 zorkmidden

His site is so poorly designed... Typical.

Ain't it the truth. He ought to hire Charles to make him a clean, elegant comments system.

262 Doug  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:00:32am

Hey, it was fun to walk into Ol' Noam's place and shit all over the floor.

Hope he enjoys cleaning it up.

I imagine this guy has never stepped on shit in his life.

263 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:10:28am

#262 Doug

It was funny for about 5 minutes. Now it just sucks.

And I wish I could find the person pasting various threads into the comments section...

264 Thom  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:16:33am

Oh great. Some genius just pasted "War and Peace".

265 euph173  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:23:23am

268 quark2  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:36:54am

Comments are screwed at Chomskys blog. I guess he isn't learned enough to know he needs someone to guard his 'weedpatch' of nonsensical unknowledge.

269 MICAEGN MUSLIM[deleted]  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:39:00am
270 Jheka  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 7:42:56am

As someone who was among the first to mock Chomsky on his blog I must say that the "JEWS" spamming and the other spamming sucked. I think that Chomsky is a shmuck but I still believe in free speech (and yes, I'm perfectly well aware of the fact that the First Amendment does not pertain to non-government action; that's not what I'm talking about) and would have loved to see Noam try to respond to the comments and criticisms put forth. Now he'll just scroll through and delete, as he should. And believe me, he can afford the bandwith charges.

Think of it as a radio show. Some of us were calling in while someone else decided to just jam the signal OF THE CALLERS. Noam still gets to post his stuff on the front page and he and his readers will just ignore the comments. Essentially, the spammers are destroying the rebuttal section. Not cool and not smart.

#244 Zorkmidden -

Too late. Michael Moore already has that title.

And the title I was hoping to get, Bill Clinton already has.

And sorry, LGF gals - Howard Dean already has that other title.

:)

278 Frank IBC  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 8:44:35am

Why am I not the least bit surprised that a "Muslim" is whining about "just giving back what you're dishing out"?

And yes, any LGFers who did similar are childish too. We're better than that.

285 freeper jr.  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 9:39:52am

Nice work!!!

I don't think that comments section will be coming back anytime soon.

Dear Noam,

I'm so happy that you're publishing a column helping the lovelorn.

My problem is that there's a woman in my office that I'm very attracted to and I don't know how to approach her.
I've had issues in the past like this where I've exercised, well, less than stellar judgment. I thought a subtle way to make an overture would be for me to get a jpg file of a photo of me nude and send it over to her.
I know just the picture too. One of my more rewarding hobbies is nude-self-photography. I snapped off a great photo of me in the mirror and the flash as well as the fact that most of my body hasn't seen the light of day in about ten months gives me this unearthly glow. Plus the photo was from what I like to call my "Pre-depilatory Period" and my significant body hair swirls around like a satellite view of cirrus clouds.
The only problem is, I'm holding the camera over my face so I'm not 100% sure she'll know who it's of, although my rather pronounced gynocomastia (man-breasts) should clue her in.

Sound like a good ice breaker?

286 V the K  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 9:40:23am

In this instance, Chomsky was right to cut off comments. Certain LGFers and some people posing as LGFers acted like asshats. They were attacking free expression, not Chomsky.

In this instance, Chomsky was right to cut off comments. Certain LGFers and some people posing as LGFers acted like asshats. They were attacking free expression, not Chomsky.

It's a shame. You in particular had a great post over there. Now that's all over because a handful of dipshits here have the mentality of 12 year olds. F*ckin' babies.

291 V the K  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 10:31:17am

Jheka and Dirk Diggler, Hmmm... you're right, I thought the trolling of Chomsky's log had gone too far, but I had long prided myself on being on the side of the argument that was less likely to engage in that kind of behavior.

I always thought the reason left-wing blogs tended to be less comment-friendly than LGF was because the left didn't want to hear other opinions... but what if it's because the left show more deference to our blogs than our 'firends' show theirs?

292 Jheka  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 10:40:39am

#291 V the K:

There are idiots on both sides of the spectrum (which, lest we forget, tends to be circular rather than linear). Only some of the idiots who posted on Chomsky's blog were LGFers (and fewer still regulars) while others were posing as LGFers while being as obnoxious as possible.

We had a golden opportunity; to confront a lefty god on his own turf and demonstrate what a silly, blinkered ivory tower joke he really is. A bunch of mental adolescents (who shall remain brainless), with the help of lefties who were eagerly egging them on and copying them, shat all over that opportunity and managed to make our side and this site look bad.

What a shame.

293 Dirk Diggler  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 10:55:55am
What a shame.

Hey well at least we all learned what a "Hot Karl" was.

294 News Flash  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:06:27am

Chomsky didn't read his blog. He wrote his stuff and sent it to the guy who runs the site. So your collective spamming effort was really for nothing, though it's good that so many got to see what you people are about. Congrats, and keep the bile flowing!

295 euph173  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:06:50am

You all have only yourself to blame for Bush's proto-postcapitalism anti-deconstructionism. Once all of us on the left co-define our trans- and post-conditionalities to fight you crypto-reactionaries, you'll be wishing for the days of proto-fascist post-structuralism!

296 David 'Parisian Insider'  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:07:18am

Comments are truly hilarious, I am just reading them at the moment. ;-)
I suppose LGFers represent the largest mass of contributors to the enlightenment of Chomsky's flawless rhetorics.

297 zenbone  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:08:53am

#291 and #292 are probably right and I am one of the ones that made an ass of myself. (Although to be honest I don't feel that guilty about it.)

He could hire someone to moderate the site which would help to further useful debate.

Chomsky is doing a lot of harm and I don't believe that you can debate this guy in any reasonable way and get anywhere.

Where I agree with #291 and #292 is the harm done in making our POV look ridiculous through acting in an infantile way.

But I am not at all sure that anything useful can come through discussion with a guy like that. He already "knows everything" and is never mistaken in his mind. He is supporting evil.

We'll never know, will we?

Besides, the point wouldn't have been to convince Chomsky any more than the point of a presidential debate is to convince the other guy to vote for you. It's the readership that would have been the target and the good guys lost this one.

299 David 'Parisian Insider'  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:43:16am

#298 Jheka:

I would invoke Swift, "It is useless to attempt to reason a man out of what he was never reasoned into".

Chomsky and his followers are not open to debate. Their politics are so boring and cliched, it's not worth discussing - making fun of them is the appropriate response.

As far as online (or offline) debating for the purposes of campaigning, I would suggest that the undecideds are the targets, and I haven't the foggiest clue what gets them to make a decision. I mean, post 9-11, if you are undecided, what the hell is wrong with you?

301 Dirk Diggler  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:53:47am
But I am not at all sure that anything useful can come through discussion with a guy like that. He already "knows everything" and is never mistaken in his mind. He is supporting evil.

I love LGF, but let's face it, we're preaching to the choir here. Imagine the effect that it would have on Chomsky worshippers if they saw their icon's absolutist dogma evicerated by 'contemptible' individuals without Ivy League pedigrees?

302 Beagle  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:54:09am

Well, crap. I really wanted to debate Chomsky in a free speech zone -- free from the constraints of having him determine my GPA. I'm not willing to go to school again just to debate him.

Now, as I suggested, the already self-righteous will feel more justified in their self-righteousness, if that's possible with the Khmer Rouge over there. Whatever anyone thought they were accomplishing just backfired. If the idea was to prove that Chomsky would not permit free speech, think about how annoying it is when someone does it here.

Though I'm not religious, I think the Golden Rule -- or the Categorical Imperative -- should be followed. Scrolling past irrelevant stuff annoys me, period.

303 veebee  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 11:59:07am

euph173 and others of the same persuasion.

I agree that Chomsky is not open to debate. Certain witty remarks pointing to his dishonesty, hypocrisy, his defenses of indifensible are fine with me, although ideally, I think, they should be supported with links. But much of the comments on the blog had no substance whatsoever, just a waste of space. Gives a bad name to the people who posted them.

304 Jocund Mavis  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:06:24pm

The inevitable happened on Gnome's blog. there has definitely been a lizard invasion as the blog is saturated with comments cut and pasted from the Post Modern Generator -a/k/a Dada Engine (I used to have a link for this but you can google it and give it a whirl).

305 euph173  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:16:27pm

#301 Dirk-

Imagine the effect that it would have on Chomsky worshippers if they saw their icon's absolutist dogma evicerated by 'contemptible' individuals without Ivy League pedigrees?

The only problem with that is that Chomsky's fame relies on his unrefutableness. The pseudo-intellectual gibberish he pioneered (and which I am laughing myself silly lampooning) is designed to:

a) make someone seem smart without having to be smart and,
b) clouding your writing to such an extent that you can never be pinned down as having actually said anything.

This marks his ideology: no matter what he says, he can always deny saying it later. Debating with a Chomskyite is to miss the point entirely: they are not ignorant, they are not stupid, they are irrational. How do you argue logically with someone who doesn't subscribe to logic?

Laughing at them is the only useful interaction you can have with a Chomskyite. To do otherwise is to give them more credit than they deserve.

306 euph173  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:18:47pm

I am proud to say that none of my post-modern drivel came from a bot. Credit my degree from the University of Michigan.

307 Baldy  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:29:21pm

I will say it again. I used to believe in shouting down opponents, but no more. I was a LLL then. I have come to see how conservative speakers & newspapers are treated on campuses in the US, and I've seen the light. I would hope that they (Chomsky bloggers) open up their comments again, because it would be enlightening & entertaining to see what they say.

308 evariste  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:40:24pm

309 Infidel  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 12:58:46pm

OK, some of the flaming was over the top and irritating. BUT, Chomsky should have been shot as a traitor for his quickly forgotten trip to Pakistan in October of 2001 to recruit for the Taliban.

He recieved only a small taste of the well deserved hate and anger that loyal Americans have for him.

#308 evariste,

Whoever it was spamming JEWS and JOOS and that list of pervy things (my new to-do list) and pasting the lgf thread-all four of you suck!

I agree (except for the to-do list part).
Post something funny. Post something nasty. But the spamming dreck is always annoying and it messes up the fun that Chumpsky's blog has to offer us. I enjoy the laughs and repetitive spam is NOT funny.
If someone does have to spam his comments, at least do it right. None of that 5,000 character nonsense. It should be at least 1/2 mile long and leave the thread toast. So if the spammer can't do it right...don't do it at all!
And posting an LGF thread there is exceptionally stupid. I don't appreciate my nick there at all.

It's Thursday, March 25, and the gutless prick has indeed turned off the comments. That was quick! Guess he couldn't take the heat.

#311 Delta Burka:

That wasn't heat. It was shit and he shouldn't have been expected to take it. You don't know how much it nauseates me to have to speak up for Chomsky but certain individuals have put me in a position where I feel that I have to. It doesn't take a lot of guts to be a spammer.

314 evariste  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 3:47:40pm

Agreed, Jheka. If the stupid people hadn't done that then we could now be saying "he couldn't handle the heat" but now we can't. How utterly pointless.

I don't spam. I just post brief, inane, but hopefully humorous comments.

Kind of like I do over here.

;)

Evariste:

Though I thought the spamming was utterly unproductive, Charles has taken the kind of heat that made Chomsky fold, almost every day for two years, IIRC.

Great, thanks a lot whoever immaturely spammed Chomsky's site with the prOn and cut-n-paste spam!

You've just gave all the smart people who try to make sense of their world from LGF, Rantburg and other cool blogs a bad name.

Now Chomsky's comments section is gone, there is no chance to show him up with facts and logic.

Having said that, Chomsky should get someone to redesign his site so he can screen out the spammers, like Fred has just done to Rantburg.

I don't think at heart he is interested in actual debate however of the timeconsuming variety that is a weblog, just self-promotion.

He just likes to broadcast, not be challenged methinks.

from our adoring fans at MeFi...

I've met with Mr. Chomsky a few times. Politics aside, he's actually a swell guy.

I am a huge fan of Chomsky. I frequently do not agree with him, but he's such a brilliant and eloquent advocate of his cause, he makes it entertaining just to listen to him. I think he and Gore Vidal are national treasures.

Little Green Footballs linked to it, I'm guessing that's where many of the comments are coming from.

Ha! I was actually thinking: Those user comment threads look like something out of LGF meets ANSWER-- not exactly much common ground.

Amen to that!

There is no way that logical arguments and demands for documentation will convince socialists - if there were, Kerry would not even be in the race. As it is, he may - shudder - win.

Yes, that was irritating.

But were they from LGF? Rantburg and anti-com.com and probably many other sites also referred to Chomsky. And at least one of them also spammed here afterwards.

321 Lawrence Schmerel  Thu, Mar 25, 2004 9:50:20pm

Bummer. I posted one time a short response I hoped Chomsky might see and now it is gone. What the hell happened?

I almost feel sorry for Chompsky. It seemed he was reaching out of his insulated world for contact.

Now he has returned inward as a subterranean philospher would in Punxsutawney, Penn.

Maybe he realized that the world of his experience was but a mere shadow on the wall.

No, I fear it was not the rigor of logic that caused his intuitive retreat. It was the chaotic noise of our modern incivility.

Does this outcome expose a weakness in the theory of the individual's union with the collective?

How will he confront the Guardians of the Republic without Dialogues?

Will even his monologue continue?

Or will it ever end?

Nah - it looks to me that he wrote the articles but had nothing else to do with the blog. He would not enter into discussion with the fans. What could he possibly gain from that.

He just likes to broadcast, not be challenged methinks.

From what I herd about him he's thinned skinned, likes to dish it out but doesn’t like being challenged. Keep in mind most of his lectures are on college, university or liberal radio stations. So he’s pretty much preaching to the choir. Big difference when you step out in the real world with nobody around to shout down an opposing view.

Frank IBC, Sheik Sahyun

So is the IBC for "inane, banal comments" or what?
