Ottawa Muslims Raided

Tue, Mar 30, 2004 at 7:48:59 am PST

More RoP terror raids today in Ottawa; but there are very few details yet on the reason for this raid on the home of a prominent Muslim leader: Ottawa Muslims held in global terror sweep. (Hat tip: Judith.)

A handful of Ottawa Muslims were being questioned last night in what authorities described as an international terror probe that saw heavily-armed Mounties storm the home of one of the city’s most prominent Muslims.

At 1:30 p.m. yesterday, RCMP tactical units, acting on security intelligence briefs, fanned out across the city, arresting one young Muslim man and questioning several others.

The raids followed a month-long RCMP surveillance operation targeting the Orleans home of Mahboob A. Khawaja, who is presently teaching at a university in Saudi Arabia.

Reached there last night, Mr. Khawaja said he was “extremely disturbed” by the raid.

“It’s nothing more than a hoax to create embarrassment,” he said in a telephone interview. “I don’t have the facts about why they would raid my house and take my two children into custody.”

The Mounties forced their way into his home, but their target was nowhere to be found. Instead, they found two of Mr. Khawaja’s adult children.

His wife, Azra, had gone out for some afternoon shopping and was picked up by police at a shopping centre.

Later in the day, RCMP arrested a Muslim man linked to the house.

According to his friends, one of Mr. Khawaja’s four sons was taken away yesterday by RCMP as he walked the hallways of the University of Ottawa, school books in hand.

"I know my children, they're not involved in this kind of thing. We are a very peaceful educated family."

Just a thought, Has there EVER been any parent who said "Yeah, my kid is a scumbag and this sounds like something he would do"

Quotes like this protesting innocence make me sick, partly because they are overused and partly because that is just what a parent of an actually innocent person would say. I think they are better left out of stories.

Just my thoughts...

I am so sick of all this "Who, me?" B.S. of the Islamofascists.

Basically we're just supposed to sit around and wait for full-blown attacks against us? We have no right to preempt an attack and we have noe right to defend ourselves once an attack takes place?

One paradox is that the Islamofascists deny an attack is going to take place or that they have any intent to attack. Then, after a terrorist attack, they take full responsibility. WTF? In other words, truth is just a matter of convenience at the time, or a tool to get what they want (the opportunity to attack successfully).

Thx., Judith, good post.

Looks like the famille Khawaja has the same PR agency as clan Khadr. "Now, Mr. Khawaja, repeat the following lines, but this time with gravitas..."

"very peaceful educated family"? Mais, certainement...

" tight-knit Muslim community"? Read as, good luck CSIS in breaking through this one.

"respected within the Muslim community"? And anywhere else?

" the boys are exemplary in their behaviour"? Absolutely- no one foments jihad any better. All that book-learnin' at the madrassah paying off.

What a nest of vipers. I am still wrestling with whether Islam can coexist in a secular, Western democracy. The balance is rapidly tilting away- and I fear that it will take "education through murder" before we in Canada recognize and confront Islamic terrorism directly. I do hope that I am proved wrong.

These people are convinced that the rest of the world gives a damn about "embarassing" them or insulting their "honor".

The links to terror or murder are secondary and irrelevant in their view, and they assume the rest of the world holds the same medievil mindset.

They can call for the deaths of entire groups of people (Joooos) and it's perfectly OK, but call them out for it and cause their "honor" to suffer and YOU become the evildoer.

Very sick.

Totally OT, but the "frank says" sidebar had this:

If there's ever an obscene noise to be made on an instrument, it's gonna come out of a guitar! On a sax you can play sleaze, on a bass you can play balls. But on a guitar you can be truly obscene! Lets be realistic about this, the guitar can be the single most blasphemous device on earth! The guitar makes a stink noise. That's why I like it!!

Not as good as the one about lighting farts, but still funny.

17 Earl  Tue, Mar 30, 2004 6:09:38am

Interesting- Amazon.ca shows Mah-boob's book being available, with the following author bio: "About the Author- Mahboob A. Khawaja is Policy Advisor and Faculty Member of International Affairs, Politics and Religions, and Peace and Conflict Resolution at Syracuse University."

Yet, a search of the SU faculty directory suggests that the good "Dr." is curiously absent from the rolls of academe at that august institution of higher learning.

So, Mr. Khawaja, could you speculate on exactly WHO wishes to create this embarrassment? I'll give you six dozen white raisins if you can answer the question without using the word "jews."

In the book, Mr. Khawaja argues for a better understanding of fundamentalism, noting that it is often laden with "negative connotations."

Gee, ya think?

I don't know why the RCMP continues to harass innocent Canadians. Why do they refuse to listen to our (former) Prime Minister, when he asserts that there are NO terrorists in Canada? How could there be? We have an Airport Security Tax that is guaranteed to keep terrorists out of the Diseased Dominion. Plus, we have a 2 Billion dollar gun registry that would make it totally impossible for them to acquire any weapons should they somehow infiltrate our border security, and immigration systems. Canada is secure, and any implications to the contrary, is purely fear mongering.

Hey, conservatism and pot smoking are not mutually exclusive, ya know? If I choose to smoke a bowl to unwind after work who am I harming exactly? In my younger days I was a drinker, but now I maybe have a couple of beers a week. On the scale of vices pot is easily the lesser of two evils when compared to alcohol.

This is one thing I cannot get disagree with Canada about. They're adopting sane policies with regards to marijuana while we're still persisting with the ridiculous classification of pot being approximately equal to heroin or crack. It's a deluded, bullshit stance that is only kept in place because cracking down on pot is so very profitable to local and federal law enforcement.

We have just had a slight political shift in our country to the right. Our right was split into the Progressive Conservatives or PC's and the Canadian Alliance Party. They have now combined forces.

Right now the sentiments are leaning right due to the long standing corruption in the Liberal Government that's been ongoing for the last 8 years - plus the recent scandals, which are not clearing up for them.

We now have a strong alternative, and hopefully people will actually be swayed enough by the facts to vote the Right in.

I find it rather astonishing that people will still stick to the party they know even when time after time after time the scandals show up and show their party to be corrupt to the core.

Yes, congratulations on this one. Maybe with Chretien and his assemblage of spoiled children acting as ministers out of the way, Canada will begin to take the threat more seriously. At least they took a step today. Look what the Brits uncovered and the Phillipinos. The Russians dealt with some Chechen terrorists in their own uniquely unashamedly Russian style.

Meanwhile, Big Bad Brave Bob Mueller crawled out from under his desk at the FBI to be sure to warn us all that Al Quaeda cells were in our country. How about busting them up Bob? Everyone else seems to be on the case but you and your organization.

48 Judith  Tue, Mar 30, 2004 6:50:29am

Amazing how the Conservative Party was destroyed by voters for their Quebec members steeped in corruption and the Liberals got into power. Now the Quebec members of the Liberal party have been caught up in corruption and the Liberal party is likely going to fall because of it.

No pattern here-move along folks.

Re: #33 Justdanny

Good question. I think most have a Dudley Doright view of themselves - UN peacekeepers and all of that. I believe that if a Madrid type terrorist act occured here the shit would hit the fan - unfortunately there isn't much of an army left to do anything externally. I am uncertain how the recent immigrants would react. There has been an enormous amount of immigration into Canada since WW II - in the post war years it was mainly from Europe, now it's from the far east (Hong Kong, China, etc.) or south Asia (India, Pakistan) as well as the Carribean. I still think most - except Muslims that is, would react strongly and not capitulate like the Spanish did.

One encouraging thought is what happened after the FLQ (Quebec separatists) kidnapped the British diplomat James Cross and the Quebec labour minister Pierre Laporte (subsequently murdered) in 1970. Pierre Trudeau, widely regarded as a left wing peace-nik invoked the War Measures Act (almost martial law) and sent troops into the street to protect Parliament and arrest the separatists and supporters. Although since regarded as an overreaction, there was widespread support at the time.

The disconcerting thought is the legal system is so screwed up and liberal that any perps would probably get a laughable sentance.

I'm not against the decriminalization of marijuana in America. I'm not 'against' people who smoke weed. Sure in some hallucinated utopianish idealized version of the world there would be no need for the escape a fat joint or heeping bowl of sensi provides. BUT, I live on earth and I know the value of a great little escape.

All I'm saying is that when I stopped smoking marijuana, shortly thereafter, I became conservative. No disrespect intended to the responsible smoker.

I'm holding my breath (NOT) to see the CBC spin on this - if they bother to mention it at all.
WE've been bombarded with a "good muslim" campaign daily - a feature added to sensitize those of us who have any kind of doubts about the RoP.
They ran with the Mahar Arar and Khadr stories for weeks. I guess this one doesn't play well in their whole anti-American grand-scheme. This poses a great dilemma to CBC: should they start criticizing the RCMP for the "unfair" treatment of innocent RoP-ers, or should they play into the hands of Americans and Zionists? Or should they sweep it under the rug and hope it will disappear by tomorrow, like they did with the Ahenakew story?
Decisions, decisions....

You see, the Jihadis come to Canada from (insert backward country) all programmed with malicious intent and within months of landing in Canada, their once grand schemes have eroded into playing GTA on Playstation and eating Tim Hortons donuts. It's brilliant really. Who woulda thunk the LLL were inadvertantly saving our collective asses?

This also explains why we have had little trouble from the Turks. Hash.

Are there any Websites or studies about extremist Muslims who came to the U.S. and changed their tune once they got here, seeing the light of democracy and freedom?

#70 Earl - It'd be nice to know if and when Ahenakew will lose his medal.

Back on topic, I've searched the CBC.ca site and found this 2002 report:

Canadians among alleged al-Qaeda members arrested
Last Updated Thu, 19 Dec 2002 21:52:24
LAHORE, PAKISTAN - Pakistani police Thursday arrested nine suspected al-Qaeda members, including two Canadian citizens.
Three naturalized Americans were also among the nine. All the men are from the same family and of Pakistani origin.
Arrested were Dr. Javed Ahmad, his two sons, two brothers, three nephews and an uncle.
Ahmad and his two sons are naturalized Americans. Ahmad's brother, Naveed Khawaja, and Khawaja's son, Usman, are Canadian nationals who once lived in Toronto, but had returned to Pakistan to live.
Some of those arrested are suspected of smuggling weapons for use by terrorists, said Sheik Rashid Ahmed, Pakistan's information minister.

It may just be pure coincidence, I assume Khawaja is a common name in Pakistan.

OT for lgf Canucks:

Whatever happened with the trial of that POS Khan who murdered his little girl and then chopped up her body? I read many news reports of his and his wife's pathetic testimony and confessions several weeks ago, but I never heard of any verdict. So, any news?

RCMP says wait for big announcement in an couple of days.

The real prize is likely the unnamed guy they arrested at the undisclosed second location.

Stay tuned.

heh. back in the days I used to rant this was part of my litany. (gave it up, lost hope for now...)
My ex-Phalange friends here in Ottawa who tend to be business owners who HIRE often inevitably Wahabbist youth here in Ottawa, well, they're VERY careful about what they say in earshot of these. Back a few months there was a stabbing/beating/killing between Christian/Muslim Arab 'youth' here in town, as I recall.

Ottawa is, by my Leb friends words, definitely a "plum posting" for the Jihadist types.

Saw the paper while out and about and raced home to try to capture a 'hat-tip' from Charles, but one's gotta be up early to beat the LGF newsmachine! Kudos, Judith!

Sun-browned 50 Ja - (semi) Love. (I give Him credit "where due" (heh, ALL), and He keeps the various gates and channels open and pumpin' the 'ol red red kurvy....as if at his satanic majesty's request!)

Though China's hardly satanic, all must admit: - It's 'The New Jewish Homeland'. Let's start "negociating", as 'pete/petey/shocked' would have it....

Why so glum? Geeze, did you hear the quote from Tzvi Hendel, NU, yesterday?: -

Although MK Eldad has been pushing for his party to quit a coalition that is putting forth such initiatives for some time, fellow National Union member and Deputy Minister of Education Tzvi Hendel commented yesterday: "Precisely at moments like this it is imperative not to run away. It is the easiest thing, which will bring the Labor party into the government; then, the Prime Minister will run ahead with his plan, with a majority provided him by Labor. Precisely now, we need to measure our steps millimeter by millimeter."

Would that be 9 mm, or should we be speaking in caliber?
