-RetweetThe Incredible Disappearing Kos

Fri, Apr 2, 2004 at 12:42:05 pm PST

Markos Zuniga has disappeared his post on how little he cared about the security personnel torn apart in Fallujah, and replaced it with a Kerryesque flip-flopping non-apology that ends up saying pretty much the same thing: Daily Kos.

Something else seems to have disappeared from Daily Kos, though; at least two of his advertisements from Democratic candidates.

UPDATE: Not only did Zuniga delete his original post, he also deleted it from Google’s cache and from the Internet Archive. (Hat tip: Thom™.) Pretty thorough butt-covering, I’d say.

there are a lot of greater tragedies going on in Iraq (51 last month, plus countless civilians and Iraqi police). That those tragedies are essentially ignored these days is, ultimately, the greatest tragedy of all.

Change the date to 1987 and he has a point. Change it to 1994 and he has a point. Change it to 1998 and he has a point. Change it to 2004 and he should shut the fuck up because WE'RE NO LONGER IGNORING THE KILLINGS.

The 100 gallons of sh*t in a 50 gallon container that calls himself Kos considers himself to be a liberal.

I consider myself a liberal, too.

Obviously, one of us is is mis-using the label. If being liberal means rooting for America to fail in Iraq, and celebrating the mutilation of our soldiers, then it is clear that I am not a liberal.

However, I think a true liberal hopes for democracy, economic growth, and peace to take hold. A true liberal is gracious and happy that a butcher like Saddam Hussein is behind bars. A true liberal supports the effort to bring positive change to the Arab world. A true liberal is on the side of the peacemakers, not murderers.

The person who writes "The Daily Kos" is no liberal.

Speaking of weasels and web posts, I have often heard the lipidous one, Michael Moore had a post on his website on 9-12 to "whoever did 9-11" that since the flights took off from the East Coast, and were heading to the West Coast, and hit targets in cities that didn't vote for Bush, that the terrorists had attacked the wrong targets (implication being that MM wouldn't have had issues with hijacking a plane in say, North Carolina, and flying it into an office tower in Houston).

Did anybody ever capture that screen and put it on a web site?

I was angry that five soldiers -- the real heroes in my mind -- were killed the same day and got far lower billing in the newscasts.

Getting close up shots of the mutilations, yes.

How often is a soldier, much less, an american citizen mutilated in a foreign country?

"I grew up in El Salvador, so it's o.k. for me to cheer the murder of Americans as a blow for progressivism and against capitalist Imperialism. I hope more Americans are murdered."

You have to see some of the comments he got on the new piece. Such as these gems:

Here's a Question (none / 1)
If what the private security forces are doing in Iraq is so noble -- if there truly is no difference between these guys and the regular US forces -- why is Big Media going to such pains to disguise their occupation?
CNN just interviewed the brother of Jerko Zovko and captioned him as 'Brother of Contractor', even as they're showing a picture of Zovko in his fatigues.
Why all these references to 'civilians' and 'contractors' instead of 'security professionals' or some such'? Why does this need to be hidden?

Merc v. Victims
1. As someone already said merc's are prostitutes they do it for the money only.
2. Where is the outrage over the innocent Iraqi's being killed. They aren't getting a $1000 a day to terrorize a foriegn country. They are just trying to survive an unjust war.
3. Where is the accountability for these military whores? Who holds them accountable? If the Iraqi's are to be held accountable why shouldn't they?
4. So what if they were vets. Tim McViegh was a vet. Lee Harvey Oswald was a vet. John Allen Mohhammed ( sic) is a vet. Being a vet is no different then any one else who changed jobs. remember with todays all mercenary army everyone is a voleenteer who joins by their own volition. Todays military is NOT the citizen soldiers of the draft and all previous wars who made the best of a bad situation. Todays military do it for the yankee dollar.

Great post, lizard. What an insufferable dick this guy is. He still is filled with so much raw and burning hatred that he can't just say "My partisan emotions got the best of me, and I acted like an ass."

No, he's back to taking his turn swinging the pipe at the pinatas hanging from cables on the bridge that he thinks these murdered humans are.

But the mercenary is a whole different deal. They willingly enter a war zone, and do so because of the paycheck. They're not there for humanitarian reasons (I doubt they'd donate half their paycheck to the Red Cross or whatever). They're there because the money is DAMN good. They answer to no one except their CEO. They are dangerous, hence international efforts (however fruitless they may be) to ban their use.

"They earned money in the private sector, and thus are fair game." And I really wonder if it weren't politically dangerous to spew similar filth about our active duty forces if he wouldn't be saying the same or similar about them too.

How much can contractors like this earn staying state-side? Quite a pretty penny, especially in today's climate. Teaching corporate suits how to do bootlegger moves in cars and warning them of things to be on the lookout for and such. Hell, there's tons of ways. While their families' tears are still flowing, he divines there's no possible way that these guys went to Iraq because they believed it was a good and important thing to do.

But because these victims weren't working for the socialist state in exchange for 2 sacks of potatoes and a gallon of vodka, their sins could never be forgiven. This guy is in his freaking thirties, and implies that they deserved to die for not giving half their check to the Red Cross! Hey Zuniga, the military troops get paid just like you did when you were on active duty. They knew they could be sent off to foreign lands to do some killing. So go on, coward, and call them mercinaries too. They knew what they were getting into when they volunteered and agreed to take the pay.

Don't you dare try and hide your evil behind feigned concern for them. Were you honest with us, you'd admit you do a little dance when those "paid killers" get "what's coming to them" too.

I reject saying left wingers have degenerated into gloating about the murder of their fellow Americans. I do say that Daily Kos and Kerry are scum and however they spin their words. They gloated about dead Americans. Kerry should never be elected president. How can you elect that man Commander in Chief and ask our boys in uniform to accept him as their leader. We shouldn't do that to them. They have been hurt enough by Daily Kos' comments.

40 brett  Fri, Apr 2, 2004 11:19:41am

I wrote to one of those advertisers and asked if they were willing to go to the doors of those families who saw their loved one's burnt remains being hit by shovels in Fallujah. I asked them if they had the guts to knock on those doors and say "screw you" to those families.

I ask the same of this Kos character. If you can't say it to someone's face and be a man about it, then shut your mouth.

I've said some pretty harsh things on this blog about Islam and its believers. But make no mistake about it: I've said the same things to some Muslims and I will every chance I get. I will go toe to toe with any Muslim any day about their religion, because I believe I have the arguments to back me up. Boys like Kos talk shit about stuff they know nothing about and then to look tough they hide behind their url's and write stuff that will forever be remembered and forever stain their names with dishonor.

At the end of the day, anyone who tries to justify the behaviour in Fallujah, the bombings planned by Yassin, 9/11, or any such acts of such depraved barbarity is my enemy. And in this war, the stakes are too high to just distance myself from people who can look at such behaviour and shrug or gloat: I will work every chance I get to destroy them. I saw 9/11, and it happened because people didn't care and let savages run wild. Well, those days are over, and it's not about race, language, nationality, or even religion; it's about whether you can look at such behavior and see that it simply cannot stand.

Kos and his gang are unbelievable. I usually never go to lefty bloggers but couldn't resist. Got a healthy dose of the evils of Bush's policies. Gee, it IS okay to kill mercenaries after all. Issue settled for the liberals - work for money=BAD=deserve no sympathy.

Didn't see any concern in their posts about hmmm, the sheer brutality and inhuman behavior of the Falluja murderers. Mercenaries, soldiers, civilians - does it matter what kind of Americans were killed above how and why they were killed? Does it? Shouldn't it bother everyone just a teensy weensy bit that there are evil animals out there ready to dismember Americans? Isn't it justifiable to be absolutely horrified beyond belief that a 10 year old boy would grind his heel into a corpse's burned skull and laugh? It IS more shocking (but certainly not less sad) than a soldier killed in a humvee accident. It deserves a hell of a lot coverage because of the disturbing questions the killings raise about the mentality of the Middle East in general. It does raise questions on moral superiority.

Apparently Kos and his posse of lemming followers aren't concerned with basic good vs. evil in the world.

I never post but am LGF fan of the highest degree. This Kos idiot really got under my skin and I had to give my $0.02.

Kudos to Martin Frost for pulling his ads from this site.

70 Charles  Fri, Apr 2, 2004 11:58:14am

Allah's Helper: you can do it through a robots.txt file, as Thom mentioned, but there is also a form at Google to have it removed immediately. Zuniga must have used that form, because the robots.txt file doesn't work immediately. He very consciously went about removing as many traces of his post from the internet as possible.

71 Doug in VA  Fri, Apr 2, 2004 11:58:41am

Mitakides actually has an endorsement from Kos on her home page. Unbelievable that it's still up like that.

72 brianstien  Fri, Apr 2, 2004 11:58:44am

OT, but related: Christopher Hitchens weighs in. Fallujah - A reminder of what the future might look like if we fail.

There must be a temptation, when confronted with the Dantesque scenes from Fallujah, to surrender to something like existential despair. The mob could have cooked and eaten its victims without making things very much worse. One especially appreciated the detail of the heroes who menaced the nurses, when they came to try and remove the charred trophies.

But this "Heart of Darkness" element is part of the case for regime-change to begin with...

Sorry if this has been posted before:
H'Wood Consultant One of Civilian Deaths in Iraq

LOS ANGELES — Friends remembered Scott Helvenston as a dedicated athlete who was just as comfortable having fun with his children as he was helping Hollywood stars go through grueling training.

Helvenston had served 12 years in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of the elite Navy SEALs special forces before leaving the service for a career as a fitness instructor and Hollywood consultant.

He lived in Oceanside, south of Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base (search), and worked as a trainer and stunt man on movies including "Face/Off" and "G.I. Jane," where he helped prepare star Demi Moore for her role as the first woman to join the SEALs. He also appeared on two reality series: "Man vs. Beast" and "Combat Missions."

"He wasn't there to engage in any fighting, although he only told me so much about it," friend Anthony Elgindy told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "He was there to maintain the peace and protect the civilians who are there."

Helvenston had also founded a fitness company, Oceanside-based Amphibian Athletics, that promised to bring a Navy SEALs-style workout regimen to his customers.

His wife, Tricia, had also participated in the Raid Gauloises in years past and appeared in some of the company's workout videos.

That's one of the "greedy corporate mercenaries" Zuniga hates so much.

They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them.

No, buddy. Screw you.

Read the first sentence of Kos's "updated" explanation (see Charles' link above)

There's been much ado
about my indifference to the Mercenary deaths in Falluja a couple days ago.

Who uses "much ado" any longer? The connection that immediately comes to mind is Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing

Isn't it obvious that that's how Kos views the furor caused by his remarks.

Even in this he denigrates the deaths of four Americans.

Someone please correct me when I get it wrong.

Zuniga was born in the US, relocated to "war-torn El Salvador" as a young child, and then returned to the US.

Why would his parents move with their child to a country at war? Was there perhaps a job to do there? Could it be that poor, peaceful, misunderstood Kos is the child of mercenaries?

102 mary  Fri, Apr 2, 2004 12:31:38pm

I tried to post this on Kos' site, but the comments seem to be password protected. I hate to waste a rant, so here it is:

"Thanks, Kos for explaining things. Now I know that the nice security guard at the Fleet Bank near Battery park isn’t really a kind old man. He’s a Mercenary!

His brain is full of spiders and there’s garlic in his soul. His heart's a dead tomato splotched with moldy purple spots. Such a mean one, that old grinch.

Little did I know that he’s doing it for the money, and he answers to nobody but the CEO. Oh, the corrosion. Where is the love?

And if you don’t believe that Battery Park was a war zone, then you weren’t there in September, 2001. If you thought it was difficult to deal with a photograph of one corpse, then you don’t know what it’s like to have a thousand corpses burning in the middle of your city. for weeks.

Americans know the hatred generated when people kill each other for 'politics or race or nationality.' Why were the wealthy Islamists, our peaceful allies who paid for 9/11 so happy to see thousands slaughtered that day? No reason but hate.

If Fallujah was the result of war then 9/11 was the result of peace. 9/11, those corpses, the grey dust that settled in the corners and the gutters of the city, the hate and those Palestinians celebrating in the streets are what peace means to me.

That's the peace that you and your ilk represent."

Kos and his pathetic status-seeker slaves would respond exactly the same way if the victims had been regular soldiers, and there is no doubt at all that dead soldiers would have been treated exactly the same way in Fallujah if the opportunity had presented itself.
The "mercenary" angle is bullshit, just icing on the cake as far as these murderous authoritarians are concerned.

This arrogant authoritarian's pretense of moral authority and indignation would be laughable if he weren't using it to justify barbarous atrocities.

Incidentally, the habit of presuming moral authority to justify barbarism is another point of exact confluence between the status-seeker left and the Islamofascists. Along with their common reliance on emotionalism, it may go some way toward explaining their superficially incomprehensible attraction for each other.

I wrote an immediate e-mail to the three Democratic candidates; one of them got back to me in about 5 minutes distancing his candidate from that vile spigot. The other took almost an hour. Still haven't heard from the "lady."

Both the guys pulled their ads, and one is launching "an investigation."

These candidates need to be commended, whatever their party. They pulled their money from where their mouth was. That's integrity.

As I said in my e-mail, I have to defend free speech, even this sick bastard's. But these candidates don't have to pay for it, they don't have to accept it without protest, and they don't have to be affiliated with it.

I was surprised, pleased and impressed with how fast they pulled their ads. Despite what some have said, they sounded as horrified and appalled at what that shithead wrote as I was.

Oh, I'm willing to bet, Kelly. What, two ads have already been pulled? I'm sure more are to come. I bet $20 that within one week, Kos has a post up that blames LGF/right-wingers/Bush-supporters for censorship/crushing of dissent/what have you. Let the people see what war is like. This isn't an Xbox game. There are real repercussions to Bush's folly.
That said, I feel nothing over the death of merceneries. They aren't in Iraq because of orders, or because they are there trying to help the people make Iraq a better place. They are there to wage war for profit. Screw them.

#106 Realwest,
I find that, in general, lawyers are a very fair bunch.
For one one thing, they seldom speak well of one another.
With apologies to Samuel Johnson.

(Don't get mad at me...my bro-in-law, the Marxist lawyer, told it to me.)

Per Thom's question about how long daily kos's robots.txt file has been like that:

GET /robots.txt HTTP/1.0
Host: [Link: www.dailykos.com...]

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Sat, 03 Apr 2004 03:26:07 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.29 (Unix)
Last-Modified: Wed, 03 Mar 2004 03:06:14 GMT
ETag: "98b585-14e-40454ba6"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 334
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/plain

[...]

It seems very unlikely, based on the evidence, that he changed the robots.txt file since March 3rd.

Also, keep in mind that both the google cache and the wayback machine do not and cannot store everything that was on the web instantly, in between crawls they are blind to changes in content. It usually takes a while for something to end up in either one. The post in question and it's deletion are pretty young so it's unlikely they were cached then dumped. And, as I've shown above his robots.txt file is not new.

It's absolutely vital we stick to the facts here. Besides which, his documented actions are more than enough to damn him, there's no need to jump at allegations before they're proved. The man is scum, but he's probably not google cache / internet archive deleting scum.

We're seeing the collapse of a large pillar in the leftist blogosphere. Hate speech such as what Kos exhibited is twenty times worse than what Trent Lott said at Strom Thurmond's birthday party, and look at what happended to Trent when the media had a field day with it.

Well the media isn't going to lay heavily into Kos or the leftist blogosphere - so the I have declared that the
blog wars have begun.

The blogosphere needs to start to report and preseve these things and collect them. Anti-Americanism within our own borders and among our own citizens is becoming a mainstream facet of the DNC.

The foreign political agitators that travel around the world to write the English signs that say, "Death to America" for illiterate mobs to hold up are now organizing the A.N.S.W.E.R. protests here in our own country.

Their goal is much larger than the deaths of a few Americans or Jihad - these folks goal is the complete dismantling of America as a superpower. Taxation on American wealth to subsidize the third world and our military handcuffed and escorted to the UN.

Don't forget it. The blog wars may be a small part - but during the American Revolution many folks thought their tiny bit wasn't significant either. The future of America is at stake. "Screw them" was just a window into the soul of the "emasculate America" globalists.

I wonder how he's feeling about now?

Given that he's a lefty Amerca-hater, probably that those who disagree with him are too stupid to see the sublime perfection of his worldview, and it's everybody else's fault, and he's the victim of a right-wing hate machine.

You know, the usual denial tempered by overweening self-satisfied egotism.

Andjam ripostes:Somebody remind me why I was ever a Democrat.

"The Democrats weren't always like this?"

No. Sigh. Even though Kennedy was a doper and an adulterer, can you imagine him acting as though the US deserved 9/11? Can you imagine Kennedy allowing the French to dictate our military actions? Hell, Kennedy probably would have inflicted a hail of hellfire on Afghanistan on 9/13.

The Democratic party used to stand for the working man (woman), the serious wall between church and state, the women's rights movement.

Now, though, except for people like Zell, it seems to stand for divisiveness and hatred towards the working man and woman, as well as a bizarre elitism best (or worst) exhibited by the so-called progressives in the arts and academe.

I'm still a registered Dem., but I so abhor what my party has become that I'm voting for Bush this November, and I voted Republican in the 2002 elections. And I had never voted Republican before in my life. 9/11 was the breaking point--one party "got it," and my party wasn't the one...

156 roxanne  Sat, Apr 3, 2004 7:57:43am

No all dems agree with KOS.

157 Model4  Sat, Apr 3, 2004 9:40:34am

#156 roxanne:

Not all dems agree with KOS.

Certainly. But I'm willing to be those who do agree are 99%+ Dems (or members of more open leftist groups who will vote for the Dem candidate). That's damning.

In the Dem community, Kos isn't fringe. Just look at the high-level associations and national-level candidates that advertise there. Many feel like Zuniga, though most of them are wise enough to know that it's not politically smart to voice these opinions openly. The party's got a huge problem with how much hardcore leftism they've chosen to incorporate into their mainstream. I've no pity for them, only for the country and the people this impacts.

Today's Democrats' worst enemies are informed voters, and those who expose their true beliefs. It's staggering. And the longer they deny this, and attack those who accurately identify their flaws, the deeper their slide into the political wasteland will be.

Those people are so disgusting. I just can't believe that so many people would vote for a political party who's membership consists of people like that.
The Democrats are Anti- American, anti freedom. It will be the death of the country if they ever get elected.

Being non-American, what amazes , and saddens me, is the extreme level of hatered displayed on Kos` original post, non-apology and comments, towards half the american nation for the crime of holding an opinion different than their own.
