Isn't it nice these "parents" never buy toy guns that have safety orange tips?
I guess they are hoping their kids become accidental martyrs when an Israeli mistakes the toy gun for a real one.

A bit OT: got another one.
Imad Janajra, 30, was killed in the village of Taluza, north of Nablus, the security sources and witnesses said. An Israel military source told Reuters news agency that Mr Janajra was shot when soldiers spotted him armed and approaching them. He was reported to be the leader of Hamas' armed wing, the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades.

I love how the photographer had to get artsy and creative with the angle of the shot. It's a familiarity with the subject matter that seems to imply he's comfortable in this situation or comfortable with these particular people. Either way, a very biased source for images.

Speaking of palestinian child abuse-
Yasir Rahman Abdul Rauf Arafat-al-Qudwa al-Husseini
interview with *PLAYBOY*
Warning: Don't have a mouth full of liquid when you read the following:
PLAYBOY: It's ironic, isn't it, that after all these years of armed conflict with the Israelis, the main reason world opinion toward the Palestinian cause has changed is the sight of unarmed young men and women throwing stones? How do you feel about that, considering your varied methods through the years?ARAFAt: I am very proud of the young men and women. Don't forget that they have graduated from the school of revolution year after year. They have gone from the school of resistance to occupation. These children have been taught, day after day, not to forget their homeland. They will not accept slavery; they will fight to be free human beings and to defend their rights as free human beings. Someday to live in the same way that other children of the world are living, peacefully.
My how nothing changes. He was a lying terrorist then and, hmm, he is a lying terrorist now. World still propping him up too.
Back then Israel was a military junta killing woman, children and babies and smashing their heads:
PLAYBOY: During these past months, the uprising in the West Bank and Gaza-and the Israeli reaction to it-has produced a dramatic change in the way people perceive the Palestinian cause. Despite that, do you think the P.L.O. will ever succeed in shedding its terrorist label?
ARAFAT: Everyone has now discovered who is the real terrorist organization:
It is the Israeli military junta who are killing women and children, smashing their bones, killing pregnant women. You just have to look at television to see this. So now it is clear and obvious who the terrorists are.

The little country that couldn't By LARRY DERFNER
...
Plenty of evidence had already built up that the settler movement was stronger than any Israeli government, stronger than the IDF, certainly stronger than the people when it came to deciding the fate of the West Bank and Gaza. During the Oslo process, 1993-2000, the settler population grew from 100,000 to 190,000. Since then, they've reestablished and repopulated every illegal West Bank outpost that the IDF had torn down, and built new ones to boot.
Now they've beaten down the legendary Sharon. They've buried a peace plan supported not only by the dovish minority but by the hawkish majority that only wants to put the greatest distance and highest walls between themselves and the Palestinians.
Look as far as you want, and there is no solution out there – at least none that might emerge from Israeli soil. This turf belongs to the settler movement. If salvation is to come, it's going to have to come from outside, from the US, the UN, the EU – from some foreign body with the power to do what the Israeli body politic is plainly too weak to do for itself.

You'll all immediately jump on me for this. You'll say "but American soldiers fight on the side of good and Palestinian soldiers are murderers" which is, I will concede, usually a pretty accurate assessment.
But whether giving a five-year-old a toy gun and a camo outfit constitutes child abuse is another matter. If it is child abuse in Gaza, it is child abuse in Iowa.

#42 Moral Equivalency Jackass
I played guns when I was a kid. I shot imaginary enemies. I didn't have my parents behind me in the middle of town rooting me on to kill anyone in particular. I didn't take time out from playing make believe to trample on the burning flags of other countries. Our school talent show wasn't based on who could give the best 'sermon' to rile up the people to kill Israelis. My parents did not wish for me to take my life as long as I took the lives of Israelis with me.
Fuc* it. I could go on and on.
If it is child abuse in Gaza, it is child abuse in Iowa.

Um...I can't say that I have. But the image has all the necessary rhetorical elements. Is it something you see a lot of?
You can make the case that playing Army, or Cowboys and Indians is the same. But you'll have to ignore that those scenarios are pure childhood fantasy/role playing, and have slim chances of becoming reality.
This situation has a much lower fantasy factor, and given recent events, this little guy might not be far away from the real thing.

Not a problem, no apology needed. In fact, I'm glad you put us both on the record about the truth, which is:
Once again, the al-Reuters *caption* called grown, adult men "youths":
A Palestinian youth jumps onto an Israeli tank to throw stones during an Israeli raid at Deir al Balah town in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites) May 5, 2004.

My oldest son, Daniel, is 6. He'll be 7 soon, in July.
He has a -pile- of toy guns - I know, half the time I have to pick them up off the floor. They've all got orange tips, at the very least. And he loves to play with them. He and the neighborhood kids play war/cops&robbers quite often. We have certain rules for them - don't point them at people who aren't playing, don't point them if you're angry, etc.
I like watching him play; he's pretty good. I've taught him use of cover, flanking, distraction, so-operation, all sorts of fun tricks.
So is this 'child abuse in Indiana'? No. I don't wish for him to actually go and kill people. And that makes all the difference in the world.

The picture of the two palestinians on a tank appeared today in the hebrew press (front page in Maariv) under the title "the embarassment of tzahal." Yep, they're cute pictures of me back in 1969, holding my toy M16 and wearing my plastic "steel" pot standing by a tree.
Its one of my favorite childhood photos, taken while my father was on combat duty in Vietnam.
I wanted to be like my dad and serve my country. And you know what? I did. I enlisted before my 18th birthday on a deferred enlistment and served proudly.
And as a member of the NRA, I've never seen anything relating to children and guns in their publications advocating violence. Only good clean fun and firearm safety.
