Religious Leader Caught Plotting Suicide Attacks

Sun, May 9, 2004 at 8:10:25 am PDT

Italy ‘foils Iraq suicide plot’.

Italian police say they have arrested an Algerian imam and four Tunisians suspected of planning suicide attacks against Western targets in Iraq.

The men were seized in a series of raids in Florence and the province of Liguria - which were still ongoing.

The raids were part of an investigation into the Islamic militant group, Ansar al-Islam, police said.

They say Islamic terrorist groups have used Italy as a logistical base, says the BBC’s Frances Kennedy in Rome.

The probe began in Genoa two years ago but has spread to the Tuscan capital, Florence.

In the latest raids, police searched a mosque in Florence and a number of homes.

“We have dismantled a cell of Ansar al-Islam,” police chief Oscar Fiorolli was quoted as saying. The group is suspected of being behind attacks on coalition targets in Iraq.

An absolute must-read about the European Union, here:

The EU even set up its own news agencies to ensure it gets a good press. News channel Euronews gets funding from the European Commission. Hannan asked Commission President what he got for his money:

(Prodi's) reply was beyond parody. Yes, he said, he did give it grants, but such grants ‘in no way restrict the editorial freedom of the beneficiary, who must, however, respect the image of the European institutions and the raison d’être and general objectives of the Union’.

Time for everyone to re-read 1984.

They say Islamic terrorist groups have used Italy as a logistical base, says the BBC’s Frances Kennedy in Rome.

The British taxpayers send a strong message that the jihadis had best stick to murdering Jews if they want the cover of scare quotes, or euphamisms like "militants," "freedom fighters," and "youths."

An Egyptian-Italian reporter, Magdi Allam (one of the few Muslims surely on the western side), uncovered a lot of rot in the italian muslim community, and his work led to the expulsion of an extremist imam (the one of Rome's mosque).

But there is still a lot to do.

No, no, no! It's common knowledge that religous and spiritual leaders of the moon demon death cult cannot be part of acts of hostility, by definition!

BTW, Tunisia is one of the most advanced (read "less whacky) muslim countries. Tunisians cannot be a part of suicide attacks! They must be Mossad agents (the ones who allegedly tried and failed to kill Meshaal)!

1984? Not really - at least, not yet. It's regrettable, but surely a necessary move to counter media conglomerates controlled by eurosceptic individuals? It's not like the EU commission's news agencies are going to dominate European media the way Berlusconi's company dominates Italian media. If they did, of course, it would be a serious problem.

#5 Pissed Off Consumer

That's "free" market capitalism and oil-dependency for you... Do you know whether that's a result of Saudi pricing rather than e.g. changing rates of international exchange? If it is Saudi pricing, perhaps they're raising prices now so they don't lose money when they lower them for the election?

Italy for some aspects is indeed a chaotic mess, while for some others is a modern, efficent contry (things are better in the north, usually).
Also, there politically correctness is almost unknown - just a few people rant about "the sensibility of minorities". In Italy, you can use quite disparaging expression in public, and get away with it: no-one forcing you to attend a "sensibility course".

Berlusconi, while doing the right (and necessary) things about terrorism, and maybe immigration, is a kind of crook on his own: ears-deep in corruption inquiries; he controls a disproportionate quote of Italian media; his government passed laws that benefit mostly Berlusconi and his cronies... I despise him, but many alternatives (the Left) are spineless appeasers.

# 18, pardon as my history is a little rusty, but in 732 Charles Martel led the Franks into battle against Muslim forces that were crossing the Pyranees into what is modern day France. This was the high water mark of the Muslim invaders. The Franks won the battle and drove the Muslim forces back to the Iberian penensula. They remaind there until the Reconquista (sp?) in the 1400s at which point they were driven off that portion of the contintent by the united kingdoms of Aragon and Castillia. Again, my history is rusty, so if I got something wrong, please correct me.

OK, you have to ignore that joblessness is at similar rates to the "boom times" of the '90s, and you have to pretend that it's the only indicator of economic health. Best too to sweep under the rug that America's economy is leaving all others in the dust. Just keep harping that the economy is mortally wounded. But now that we've got two consecutive months of powerful job creation, the media sees this as a non-story.

A couple of years ago, a law was passed in order to severely restrict the immigration from any non-EU country: basically, this laws bonds strongly the residence permit to having a job. Also, family reunions rights have been reduced.

Clandestine immigrants, when seized, are kept in detention camps and then sent back to their own country.

Welcome to Earth! There's quite a bit of history to fill you in on, context being so important after all.

You see, there was this country called the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (we'll call them the USSR) who were had an agressive strategy of militarily overthrowing governments and replacing them with repressive totalitarian Communist regimes. Then there was this guy named Truman (Google him, why dontcha) who developed a Doctrine on containing that menace.

So, what we like to call the "Cold War" ensued where the United States opposed the expansionism and militarism of the USSR, sometimes requiring some distasteful alliances/ relationships to do so.

Don't worry! I'm sure you'll have plenty of time to read up on it! Welcome again!

AFAIR, Italy's alliance with the Nazis under Mussolini was sort of the exception. They've generally had excellent relations with the US and even fought on the side of US and Britain in WWI.

No matter how some opportunists among Muslims jump on the bandwagon of "moderatism" for there personal gains, the US will never be able to win this war on Islam because it is not communism and the artificial divisions among Muslims would not last long. The yet-to-establish credibility of the so-called moderates is fast eroding in the eyes of majority of Muslims, who know what it takes to be a "moderate" from the American point of view.

It took the fall of France for Britain to come out of its coma, elect Churchill and take on Hitler. It took Pearl Harbour for the Americans to do the same, and again on 9/11.

I'm starting to think that there will have to be a European 9-11 before Europe starts taking Islamism seriously.

France hesitated so much in the 1930's, that when Hitler finally made his move, it was impotent, defeatist and ineffectual.

If Europe hesitates, will its fate be the same?
