RetweetGene Simmons: Islam a "Vile Culture"

Tue, May 18, 2004 at 7:02:43 pm PDT

Everybody and their grandmother has sent me the link to this story about KISS bassist Gene Simmons’ remarks on Islam to an Australian interviewer, which caused tsunamis of seething in the Australian Muslim community. For one reason or another I didn’t get around to it until now: KISS bassist offends Muslims.

KISS bass player Gene Simmons has caused an uproar among Australia’s Muslim community by launching an attack on Islamic culture while in Melbourne.

The lizard-tongued rock god who is touring Australia with the world’s most enduring glam rock band launched an attack on Muslim extremists during an interview on Melbourne’s 3AW radio.

“Extremism believes that it’s okay to strap bombs on to your children and send them to paradise and whatever else and to behead people,” he said yesterday.

The Israeli-born US musician went on to say Islam was a “vile culture” that treated women worse than dogs.

Muslim women had to walk behind their men and were not allowed to be educated or own houses, he said.

“Your dog, however, can walk side by side, your dog is allowed to have its own dog house… you can send your dog to school to learn tricks, sit, beg, do all that stuff — none of the women have that advantage.”

He went on to say the west was under threat.

“This is a vile culture and if you think for a second that it’s going to just live in the sands of God’s armpit you’ve got another thing coming,” he said.

“They want to come and live right where you live and they think that you’re evil.”

Simmons said the United Nations approach did not work and the west had to “speak softly and carry a big stick”.

The radio station today fielded calls from Muslims upset at the comments, including Australian Muslim of the year Susan Carland, who said Australian Muslims rejected extremism and did not fit Simmons’ stereotype.

Ms Carland said she had two degrees, was doing her honours and “certainly do not walk behind my husband”.

The chairman of the Islamic Council of Victoria, Yasser Soliman, said Simmons’ comments were “very unfortunate”.

“He’s very famous obviously and popular and, as a result, influential,” he said.

“Mixing the entertainment world with the political and religious world is a minefield.”

He said Simmons had begun by talking about extremists but had gone on to vilify the entire Muslim culture.

“A number of his claims regarding women and what they are allowed to do and not do are wrong — Islam teaches the opposite,” he said.

Simmons is wrong, of course. About the dogs. Because Islamists Hate Dogs.

All LGF'er's. I didn't do do it. zorkmidden didn't do it.

The truth sometimes is.

I'm not going to argue with anyone that breathes fire, spits blood, and has a tongue that reaches down to his adam's apple.

In that way madness lies.

Simmons was born in the Mideast, no?

“Mixing the entertainment world with the political and religious world is a minefield.”

Well, thats true. Look at Air America. It sure is bombing.

8 MNMike  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:09:28pm

Well, let's see, based on my count, that brings the total of sane actors and musicians to five:

1. Simmons

2. Dennis Hopper

3. Robert Duvall

4. The guy who played Gimil in Lord of the Rings

5. Dennis Miller

Am I missing anyone?

So Islamists hate dogs. Do they hate dogs more than they hate women?

10 HULUGU  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:10:36pm

actually--the profit muhammid--piss be upon him--thought black dogs were despicible but made exception for other colored dogs to herd sheep etc--should we call the aspca naacp on this doggie discrimination?--i wonder what the pro mo thought about inordinately long red tongues on jewish base players in devilish clown makeup--is there a hadith on that?

From the Islamist dog hating thread:

"I demand the judiciary arrest all dogs with long, medium or short legs - together with their long-legged owners," Hojatolislam Hassani is quoted as saying in the reformist Etemad newspaper.

"Otherwise I'll do it myself," said the outspoken cleric, who leads Friday prayers in the north-western city of Urumiyeh.

I wonder if he's kept his promise and is now moonlighting as the town's self-appointed dog catcher.

By the way, "outspoken" is just a ridiculous euphemism for these freaks.

"Lizard-tongued rock god" harshly criticizes backward Islamics. What's not to like?

19 fat.elvis  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:12:54pm

Someone said this on a music board I frequent: Like Simmons is one to lecture anyone on proper treatment women. :-) I could list the sexist lyrics but I'll refrain. KISS rocks, ah sort of in a novel way. The greatest band of the 80s, the Replacements covered Black Diamond... that works for me!!

Nevertheless I AGREE with him. Expect double the backlash than what Gimli (Jonathan Rhys-Davies) said... because he's a stinkin' JOOO!!

20 CJ  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:12:57pm

Egad Charles I have never been a KISS fan but now I'm a Gene Simmons fan. Does he read this site? Has he turned over a new leaf lately or was he like this already when he was writing lyrics like "Iiii just wanna rock and roll aaalll niiight and party every day" ?

“This is a vile culture and if you think for a second that it’s going to just live in the sands of God’s armpit you’ve got another thing coming,” he said.

LOL! Damn that's a funny way of putting it...

22 Globular Cluster  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:13:23pm

Anyhoo, the funny thing about Simmons is that, no matter how far away he gets from the yeshiva, he still knows his roots, and understands truth. Truly a mensch. If only I could be such a mensch I'd have 4000 sexual encouters!

I can't believe this attack on a major religion.

I mean, Simmons is a "Lizard-tongued rock god" and as a long time LGF lizardoid, I declare a Fatwa on any who would speak against him, especially a bunch on exploding pedophiles like islamic cultists the world over.

27 davesax  Tue, May 18, 2004 5:15:28pm

If there is one person with a big enough ego to not give two shits about the "backlash", it's Gene Simmons.

14 Powderfinger

Right on!

Gene Simmons was born Chaim Witz in Israel in 1949 and moved to the United States with his mother when he was 9 years old. The two settled in Brooklyn, New York, but growing up in a foreign land wasn't easy for Gene: he had to learn English through comic books and television.

As for strapping on Dynomite...First no real romance in their lives. No kindness and sweetness.. No real mutual sexual love. No love of Pets. Have NO sense of Humor about themselves or anything else and therefore: If I had to live like that..I might consider doing what they are doing just to get AWAY from that horrible existance.

When do they just sit down and laugh themselves silly? Looks like NEVER. How CAN they stand to live like that?

Hah! I particularly like the "quote" from the woman who holds forth how educated she is...maybe she should head to Saudi Arabia and see how far she gets with that line, or her degrees...With all that education, I bet she'd figure out pretty quickly after they started beating her that she had made a pretty bad mistake.

And she was awarded "Muslim of the Year"??? Anybody else find that "title/award" strange? Can I run for "Jew of the Year"? Is there a "Zoroastrian of the year"?

Tough-guy actor Russell Crowe was so upset by a fire-bombing at a Jewish elementary school in Montreal, he called the school to offer a donation to help rebuild its library, a school spokeswoman said Tuesday.

Ill tell you what I sort of remember Gene Simmons saying..about year ago ..He said something to the effect that..if the Pals get their State and THEN come INTO Israel all Suicided UP...and cause damage then Israel will be able to LOWER THE BOOM so to speak and be able to treat Terrorism of a real State, Palistine, with more force then they are doing now. Anyone ELSE hear him say this? He is a Jewish boy..He was brought up in America but he was born in Israel..Gene knows who he is and always has. Hes an ONLY IN AMERICA type Jewish boy. Just like my Grandpop. He sees America with love, gratitude and wonder...

Always loved Kiss. Good band..and a terrific show and a terrific IN JOKE with Everyone IN on the Joke.

[Islamists h]ave NO sense of Humor about themselves or anything else...

It does seem to me that this is true. Do they ever laugh? (I exclude the cruel and humorless laughter of sadism.)

I like Gene Simmons better as an actor than as a singer...and that's in spite of having been a teen during the KISS years. His role in the season finale of Third Watch was excellent.

A few months ago I recall Simmons (on some talk show...can't remember which) saying pretty much the opposite of this "vile culture" stuff, that the problem was with extremists, not Muslims. He indicated that his son had a friend who is Muslim, and that this kid came from a normal family.

Wonder if the Aussie spin is accurate...it's definitely a different tone that what I recall from that earlier interview.

“A number of his claims regarding women and what they are allowed to do and not do are wrong — Islam teaches the opposite,” he said.

Has anyone else noticed that Islam supposedly teaches everything? I mean, let's forget for the moment the fact that my new hero, Mr. Simmons, didn't even make but a couple of points about women, so it's kinda difficult for "a number" of them to be wrong ... exactly where does Islam teach something 180 degrees from the subjugation of women? Can anyone explain why places like Saudi Arabia are not following this phantom teaching?

I'm so happy that Ms. Carland is so liberated ... maybe she'd like to take that lifestyle out of Australia and try it out back in the sandy homeland.

Lately, comments that have been attributed to me in the press have been printed. They are false. Please use your own logic and best judgement when reading media. Sometimes media is responsible and sometimes, it is not.

Jamie,

Yes...it's a good point. Think of all the things we take for granted in the West non-Muslim world that one would NEVER associate with Muslims:

1. family picnic
2. golf tournament
3. tennis game
4. ___ (fill in with any athletic event that does not involve a sheep's head)
5. cheerleaders (sorry...car swarms don't count)
6. female experiencing an orgasm
7. children with eager, inquisitive smiles
8. men who say, "Here, honey...let me help you with that."
9. birthday parties
10. proms
11. movies
12. going cruising as a teenager (hell...even Amish do this in their horse-and-buggies!)
13. Valentine's Day dinner with your bed bunny

Sheesh...and this is just the fluff in our lives...not even the important stuff like basic human rights or anything.

OT: From Jack Kelly's article in today's Jewish World Review:

Last week, while relaxing by the pool at his hotel in Baghdad, Toby Harnden, Middle East correspondent for the British magazine the Spectator, was "accosted by an American magazine journalist of serious accomplishment and impeccable liberal credentials.

"She had been disturbed by my argument that Iraqis were better off now than they had been under Saddam and I was now going to have to justify my bizarre and dangerous views. I'll spare you most of the details because you know the script — no WMD, no 'imminent threat,' a diversion from the hunt for bin Laden, enraging the Arab world. Etcetera.

"Not only had she 'known' the Iraq war would fail but she considered it essential that it did so because this would ensure that the 'evil' George Bush would no longer be running her country. Her editors back on the East Coast were giggling, she said, over what a disaster Iraq had turned out to be. 'Lots of us talk about how awful it would be if this worked out.'

"Startled by her candor, I asked whether thousands more dead Iraqis would be a good thing. She nodded and mumbled something about Bush needing to go."

From Steyn:

"That’s what all those Hollywood and Broadway Communists did. They were the polite front of an ideology that led to mass murder, and they expected Kazan to honour their gentleman’s agreement. In those polite house parties Gregory Peck goes to in Kazan's movie, it’s rather boorish and tedious to become too exercised about anti-semitism. And likewise, at gatherings in the arts, it’s boorish and tedious to become too exercised about Communism – no matter how many faraway, foreign, unglamorous people it kills. Elia Kazan was on the right side of history. His enemies line up with the apologists for thugs and tyrants. Whose reputation would you bet on in the long run?"

John Rhyes Davies was on Scarborough Country tonight and said to Joe that he thinks France should not be taken seriously in anything it says [this reference to Michael Moore being the likely frontrunner in the Cannes Film Fesitval] and then said he thinks France is about "24 to 25 years away from civil war". Joe never asked him to elaborate, but it was understood what he meant. The words Muslim or Islam never came up. In my opinion, that civil war is more likely to come much sooner.

This is a vile culture and if you think for a second that it's going to just live in the sands of God's armpit you've got another thing coming. They want to come and live right where you live and they think that you're evil.

I just get a visceral thrill when an infidel criticizes the death cult with impunity. Interestingly, KISS was the first band I ever saw live. Makes me feel kind of old, but not as old as Gene Simmons!

But Ted Nugent gets it.

America isn't at a social or political crossroads as some will try to tell us. Those who believe that would have told you 500 years ago that the earth was flat. Thirty years ago they would have been stoned on LSD, drooling and dancing naked at a Grateful Dead concert. My advice is to avoid these people. They will always gravitate towards the negative. Take it from an old, cocky rock 'n' roll guitar player whose God-given senses remain finely tuned: America's best days are in front of us.

Clint Eastwood is a libertarian which means he could be not picking sides (as if that's an option) but I'd hate to meet him in alleyway if I were a jihadi.

notice that the media is looking the other way.
I also don't get how they can blame Bush for not getting his message out. THE ENTIRE MEIDA IS LEFTWING AND IS AGAINST HIM.

Stupid side not: I went to get my hair cut this evening and while i was waiting I picked up a couple of magazines. GQ and Glamour (both are magazines I NEVER read) In GQ - there was an anit-Bush screed.
In Glamour - there was a pro-Kerry/Pro-Theresa Heinz Kerry expose’.

I already realize the media is anti-Bush. But this evening I realized that even non-political magazines are anti-Bush. It's incredible. Asking Bush to get his message out is like asking him to change the entire media to be non-biased against him. And if Bush did have ANY leverage with the media – the left would cry like babies.

Bush must win.

168 Aisha  Tue, May 18, 2004 6:52:14pm

Wa'sallam,

Islam is not a "vile culture", whatever that means. It is the only true religion.

Nabi [Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam] said, ‘All of the prophets were given such miracles as inspired people to believe. And the miracle that I have been given is the Qur’aan.’ (Bukhari)

What are those features of the Qur’aan which prove it to be the word of God? There are many but we shall refer only a few. The ultimate challenge which the Qur’aan has placed before mankind 1400 years ago ‘…and if you are in doubt of what we have revealed to our servant, produce one chapter comparable to it. Call upon your helpers besides God to assist you, if what you say is true.’ (Qur’aan 2:23)

Needless to say, this challenge has not to this day been met. Many have tried all have met with failure, proving the divine origin of the Qur’aan. Then is pristine purity in which the Qur’aan has reached us. Not one word, nay even a letter has been changed since its revelation. Then there are the many predictions of the Qur’aan which have turned exactly as predicted, pointing again to the divine imprint of such a being whose knowledge is all encompassing. Furthermore, how many scientific, medical and astronomical facts are mentioned in the Qur’aan, the knowledge of which was non-existent at the time of its revelation.

All creatures are the creation of Allah Ta'ala and do deserve the recognition of being a creation of the Almighty. As much as Muslims detest even the sight of pigs - it is the creation of Allah Taãla - and because Allah has placed life into it, we cannot inflict pain nor torture the pig.

Similarly Allah Ta'ala created the dog from among His creation. This does not mean that we should love the dog. It is perhaps the indoctrination of the Western culture that 'The dog is Man's best Friend'. The theory that 'dogs are very dependent on Human affection' is a myth - again culture and custom has helped to develop this unnatural behaviour.

Allah Taãla the Creator of this Universe - having created the dog would surely have known that the dog requires Human affection and love to exist in this world. Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam) would have advised us, Muslims, to keep dogs as pets. On the contrary, we are instructed not to keep dogs as pets and 'love' them as exemplified by the non-Muslims. Remember our life is structured and bound by the Shariah i.e. The Noble Qurãn and the beautiful example of Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam). Consider these Ahaadith:

Hadhrat Abu Talha (Radhiyallaahu Ánhu) reports that Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or an animate picture. (Sahih Bukhari Hadith no. 2986)

Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (Radhiyallaahu Ánhuma) reports from Hadhrat Maimoona (Radhiyallaahu Ánha) that once Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam) became sad; and said that Jibra'eel (Álayhis Salaam) promised to meet him at night but did not turn up. "By Allah what has kept him back," said the Prophet (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam). Then he realised a puppy was under his bed. He ordered that the puppy be removed and the area be sprinkled with water. In the afternoon when Jibra'eel (Álayhi Salaam) came, Rasulullah (Sallallaaahu Álayhi Wasallam) enquired as to the delay. Jibra'eel (Álayhi Salaam) said that we, the group of Angels do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or pictures. (Sahih Muslim Hadith no.3928)

In the light of these Ahaadith and other narrations it is not permissible to keep dogs as pets. The household is deprived of the Mercy of Allah Taãla.

However, Jurists have stated that it is permissible to keep a dog for security purposes, farming and hunting.

The saliva of a dog is Najis (impure). if it touches the clothes or body, that portion also becomes impure and must be washed.

Aisha.

179 Aisha  Tue, May 18, 2004 7:01:22pm

On the topic of the Jew Simmons,

Allah Taala says in the Quran, 'Verily (the accepted) religion in the sight of Allah is Islam'. In another verse, He says, 'And whosoever follows (and religion) besides Islam, it will not be accepted'. The Shariah that was given to the Jews through Musa (Alayhis Salaam) was confined to that time. It was abrogated when Easa (Alayhis Salaam) was appointed as the prophet of Allah. The Jews were required to submit to the Shariah (way) given to Easa (Alayhis Salaam) which was finally abrogated by the Shariah given to Rasulullah.

The salvation of every person depends upon submitting to the religion of Islam according to the Shariah of Rasulullah. Merely believing in the Oneness of Allah is not sufficient. The opinion of Imam Abu Hanifa is for
people who did not get the message of Islam.

It is vile that Simmons has insulted Rasulullah and Islaam. As Muslimah, I can say that I have never been beaten by my husband and I am treated with respect within the bounds of hijaab.

Aisha, this is how my current religion (genetics) defines the kinds of love.

Scanning the brains of people in love is also helping to refine science's grasp of love's various forms. Helen Fisher, a researcher at Rutgers University, and the author of a new book on love*, suggests it comes in three flavours: lust, romantic love and long-term attachment. There is some overlap but, in essence, these are separate phenomena, with their own emotional and motivational systems, and accompanying chemicals. These systems have evolved to enable, respectively, mating, pair-bonding and parenting.

How does Islam define the kinds of love, and which are allowable in qur'anic interpretation?

To put it clearly,
we Jews think Muslims are full of shit.
Mohammed invented Islam by observing Judaism.
Did you ever learn about muslims fasting on Yom Kippur? Probably not, because Mohammed ,Piss be upon him, eliminated it from his teachings when my ancestors told him to screw off.
How come you guys pray 4 times a day? Because you know who was observing us during Yom Kippur when we pray four times.
Islam is the Bizzaro world version of Judaism.
Furthermore, Our recorded history outside of the bible goes back thousands of years. We remember the nonsense of the arabs, it's the same stuff they do today, kill whoever disagrees with them just like Mohammed killed to the Jews who didn't believe him, only difference now is they "worship" one deity as opposed to sand dunes.

What I said or meant to say is: When these people, and it doesnt necessarily have to be boys, girls too can be charming and get away with behavior other girls CANT, misbehave, do what they want, its REALITY..thats all. Reality is reality neither good or bad..just the facts.

We all know the kids in school that can wind the Teacher around their little fingers..can get with stuff..and do this with almost everybody around them..Dont try this kind of behavior that you have in your fantasy unless you are one of those types of people or else what you are going to do will BACKFIRE in your puss.

Whats right..?? Ive decided for myself..using my values..now YOU decide. Im pretty sure cheating on your wife and FAMILY is wrong..But thats just me...

now that's just down right perverted.

It's not perverted, it just does not exist after 1 year with most people.

Date a girl for more than one year. Tell me how the sex life compares to when you first went out. Tell me how it would compare to sex with your special someone after some time with others...

Hmmm. Errr. Well. Confession time here. I've yet to successfully master the wood lathe and turn a bowl with my husband's tutelage because if I run into a problem, he puts his arms around me to show me the proper way to hold the chisel and before you know it clothes are a-flyin'.

I think I'm going to have to sign up for one of those bowl-turnin' classes at Woodcraft so I can get that bowl completed.

OTOH, I've never dated a girl, so never mind.

A frenchmen, an American, and an Englishman are stuck for some punishment in Saudi Arabia. The punishment is severe.

The punisher says to the Englishman, you have no wishes, you get 10 lashes on the back.

Next punisher says, Frenchman, you get one wish in addition to 10 lashes on the back. Frenchman says, no lashes for me, sir, but 10 for the American!

Punisher says, American, you get two wishes. Amercian says, "I want 100 lashes for my first wish"

and your second, says the punisher?

"Tie the Frenchman to my back first" says the American.

I think that most of us can agree that Gene Simmons pretty much has the "gentle muslim" concept in order, but in a strange way, maybe to illuminate this thread, maybe not...

I've spoken about cognitive dissonance enough around here that people hate me. The gulf of cognitive dissonance between the average Islamic warrior who has no formal training other than the Koran, and the average westerner who has grown up in a culture of mass communication is daunting.

But until we can bridge the gaps and achieve resonance of communication within our own culture we have an insurmountable task to conquer. You may think you speak like your neighbor, but the diversity of english though allows wide variances of interpretation as to what one person has said to another.

In many ways this cacophony yields rich rewards, because of human imagination and the tendency for misunderstanding to breed creative thought. In other ways, however, it is nothing short of abject human tragedy, as occured this last weekend in Colorado.

You see, nobody wanted to see something bad happen, and everyone worked in the public interest, and in spite of that, dissonance reared its ugly head to cost four good people their lives. The fact that it didn't have to happen isn't the most salient point. The fact that it happened speaks volumes about the ability of even like-minded adults to bridge the gap of communication with other like-minded individuals.

[Link: 63.147.65.175...]

And if you listened to that audio clip and don't understand, it's all about the collapse of a girder, a terrible danger that was forewarned and not disregarded, but misinterpreted. Because Americans could not convey the simple danger of the situation, four of my statesmen died. It was nobody's fault but our own, because you can't pin this disaster on any person. Nobody would be so callow.

The press has repeatedly reported the sensational on this story, saying that a bridge girder fell and crushed three people to death. That story is very inaccurate, and I'm not about to give a lesson in hearing, and listening, and understanding.

Not now. Not when I can see Gene Simmons wondering if his relatives and friends, and even his own life; can continue far beyond this moment.

I am in an angry and dark moment, and I have right to be.

Firstly any love outside Nikaah would be termed as illicit relationship. Such relationship would bring temporary pleasure and long term heart ache, problems and difficulties which also falls into the category of forbidden love-Haraam-it draws the anger and wrath of Allah-which can follow with calamities. However sincere Tawbah-repentance with deep hearted tears draws Allah's Mercy, love, kindness and forgiveness with lots of increase in Barakat.

But then what does one do with theses feelings. Is there a way out - Yes! consider this love to be the poisonous arrow of Shaitaan trying to mislead two innocent youth - For youth in the path of Allah will attain the Shadow of His thrown on the Day of Qiyaamat.

Consider also this person may not be the correct match. He is also just filled with intestines of filth, and how long will this beauty last? He grows old or bold - or (May Allah protect) if the beloved meets with an accident and his face is burnt and scarred - the beauty is gone.

Hence remember Divine love-only true love-proven and tested is from the bond of Nikah.

If one is ready for marriage , follow the correct procedures to enjoy the Bliss of marriage.

If not follow the order/command of the Quraan i.e LOWER THE GAZE.By passing you may just see a person, but the second gaze is forbidden. Try and practise on this and Insha-Allah you will enjoy the sweetness of Imaan. If you take one step to Allah, He will come ten towards you.

[Churchill said it better.]

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays
on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which
is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog,
there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects
are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits,
slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of
commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever
the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded
sensualism deprives this life of its grace and
refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The
fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to
some man as his absolute property—either as a child, a
wife, or a concubine—must delay the final extinction
of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a
great power among men. Individual Moslems may show
splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and
loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But
the influence of the religion paralyzes the social
development of those who follow it. No stronger
retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being
moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and
proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout
Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every
step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered
in the strong arms of science—the science against
which it had vainly struggled—the civilization of
modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of
ancient Rome."

As usual, I come into the thread way too late, but here's what everyone's looking for: the complete, accurate transcription of the forbidden Gene Simmons/Terry Gross interview on Fresh Air. Definitely a must-read to understand Gene Simmons. Many great moments, but my favorite is:

Terry Gross: Um, just one more question before we wrap up.

Gene Simmons: As many as you want.

Terry Gross: I would like to think that the personality you've presented on our show today is a persona that you've affected as a member of KISS, something you do on stage, before the microphone, but that you're not nearly as obnoxious in the privacy of your own home or when you're having dinner with friends.

Gene Simmons: Fair enough. And I'd like to think that the boring lady who's talking to me now is a lot sexier and more interesting than the one who's doing NPR. You know, studious and reserved, and -- I bet you're a lot of fun at a party.

295 transferthem  Tue, May 18, 2004 10:06:16pm

If the Aussie musquitoes don't like Gene's comments they can KISS his ass!! I agree with Gene. I find most muslims offensive. They breath the same air as I have to and I object to having to share it with them.

296 Uncle Joe  Tue, May 18, 2004 10:32:56pm

My main gripe with Simmons is that he is too kind in his description of Islam.

I don't wish to excite the dhimmis perusing these pages, but Islam is without doubt a vile, gutter religion that appeals to the most bloodthirsty animalistic scum on earth.

In light of the holocaust in Germany, it's often been said that no one should be referred to as "subhuman." It's time to reconsider. Benighted shit-holes like Saudi Arabia, Syria and Iran are chockful of subhuman murdering vermin. We need to start calling a spade a spade.

297 Henry S.  Tue, May 18, 2004 10:41:40pm
The radio station today fielded calls from Muslims upset at the comments, including Australian Muslim of the year Susan Carland, who said Australian Muslims rejected extremism and did not fit Simmons’ stereotype

Uh-huh. This Susan Carland?

At the age of 17, one of her New Year's resolutions was "to investigate other religions". Islam was not high on her list. "It looked violent, sexist and foreign."

But then she realized how mistaken she had been:

At times, she says she has been let down by certain attitudes within the Muslim community on issues of gender and race. She believes that what she and a growing number of Islamic feminists around the world are arguing for is the authentic Islam. "These are issues of justice. Men should be angry about them as well. What sort of a man places his security on the subjugation of women?"

The truth will set you free, Susan.

I've done a lot of research on the term neoconservative, and I was suprised to learn that its roots lie in the ancient left, developed by such philosophers as Irving Kristol, and that they only left the Democratic party after Vietnam to form a very starnge alliance with traditional conservatives.

Now lets face it, in all but foreign policy and defence Neocons are actually Liberals, I mean from the looks of this blog, no one seems to give a fuck about gay marriages and abortion and the rest of that shit.

Even the guys over at the weekly standard have voiced their support for gay marriage and stand on the left on a lot of social issues, even though their main concern is foreign policy.

Now, since it is obvious that most people on this blog would describe themselves as neocons or neocon sympathisers. My question is that now that it seems the Neocons relationship with the religious right and traditional conservatives has had its day in the sun, if Kerry wins in November are we going to see the likes of William Kristol and the people at the weekly standard and national review among others, will we see a final defection and all the neocons finally returning back into the warm arms of the democratic party aftewr all these years. After all, at this pivotal time they will want to remain close to power, and the traditional republicans seem to be getting disillusioned with the neocons, their cord to the right seems about to be severed.

A Neoconservative is a pro-Israel liberal that calls himself conservative to make the traditional ones believe that they support their causes.

If you want me to link to three extraordinary essay charting the neocons beginnings, assent to power and descent after Iraq, let me know, or sensing the hostile nature of this board, you can go nuts calling me a terrorist sympathiser/appeaser or whatever you call people coming from the left side of spectrum.

By the way where do you stand on social issues.

I've been drunk in Perth and Freemantle, and I once watched a TV show that had KISS sort of playing a Scooby-Doo role battling a phantom at an amusement park. The WA drinking was about 16 years ago, the amusement park deal was closer to 25 years ago.

Is Gene Simmons like 60 then?

Well, the hysterical screaming and the lame hardrock that Kiss has contributed to the world sure makes them an intellectual authority. The seventies may be long over, but hey, we have politicians from the seventies, we have policies from the seventies, so why not listen to what the rock dinosaur millionaires from the seventies have to say...its the music your daddy listens to...though I would rather recommend a haircut for those sweating hippies and in the meantime might listen to some good contemporary european electronic music, give me a funky 303 baseline and KISS can kiss my b*tt. Speaking of spamming the threads, I think if you'll look closely at the IR Channel 2 satellite loop (which shows low clouds better than the more colorful IR Channel 4 satellite loop, you can see a hint of cyclonic rotation just off the Nicaraguan coast, a little to the west of the big flare up of storms.

Sea surface temps in the SW Caribbean are about 28C, well in excess of the 26.5C required for tropical cyclone genesis, and there is plenty of oceanic heat coontent. As we all know, besides warm sea surface temperatures, tropical cyclones need low wind shear to allow heat to build above the surface low. 250 to 850 mb shear is now between 10 and 20 m/s. Below 10m/s is generally favorable.

Almost all global models now develop some type of tropical cyclone in the Caribbean, with the UKMET having the weakest cyclone, and the Canadian model showing a strong tropical storm or minimal hurricane (would be Alex) between Jamaica and Cuba on Sunday!

OT (I know. What's new?)

Nice to see Richard Clarke skewered.

Blitzer said the Clarke version is that the Clinton administration had border agents "on high alert" and were on the lookout for terrorists. But Bush official Condoleezza Rice said the Clinton administration had nothing to do with the capture and that credit goes largely to one agent. Blitzer then interviewed that agent, Diana Dean, who described how she questioned Ressam and he began appearing "very, very nervous and he was very agitated." She explained, "And I knew we were going to take a closer look at him to make sure that everything was okay with him. So I asked him to turn his car off and complete a customs declaration for us, which is something we always do prior to a secondary inspection." Eventually, they examined the trunk of his car and found "big bags of [explosive] powder in there." Ressam started running and he was chased down. The search continued and timers and other materials were found.

But was this scrutiny because of some directive from the White House? Blitzer wondered if Washington had ordered the border agents to be on "heightened alert in advance of the millennium or was this just business as usual?" Dean said, "This was just business as usual. That's what we do. We look for somebody out of the ordinary that just needs a little closer look. And that's what he was at that time." When Blitzer pressed her, she said, "we weren't on higher state of alert. We did not have an alert system at that time. And, no…it was pretty much business as usual for us."

Blitzer Blitzes Clarke. . . after it was all over, Clarke was conveniently not available for comment.

Well, Ed, the livestock growers are gettin' a little desperate for rain here in Florida. Last year's hay is gone; not enough rain for much grass growth and no fresh hay. The horses are on a "complete" feed only the scratch factor isn't there and they are still tryin' to find roughage. I'm substituting corn for grazing for the sheep, an expensive proposition, and even though they are fat they are bellowing because they don't "feel" full. The downside, of course, is that when the 10" to 30" of rain does arrive, all the livestock would have to be fitted with snorkels in order to graze.

Now lets face it, in all but foreign policy and defence Neocons are actually Liberals, and from the looks of this blog, no one seems to give a fuck about gay marriages and abortion and the rest of that shit.

Actually many here (including the gays who post here) oppose gay 'marriage'. I'm sure a good many oppose abortion as well. Nevertheless, unlike some knuckledragging conservatives, many at LGF feel that gay marriage and abortion are peripheral issues in wartime. Call us crazy.

Personally I find the whole neo-con label a joke, since there seems to be a great deal of confusion over what constitutes a 'neo-conservative'.

A Neoconservative is a pro-Israel liberal that calls himself conservative to make the traditional ones believe that they support their causes.

I'm beginning to suspect that you're one of those knuckledragging Buchananite 'paleo-conservatives'. Prove me wrong.

As a Deadhead, I will take issue with the Motor City Madman's take, there are plenty of anti-idiotarian Deadheads, including John Popper, harmonica and vocal extrodinaire, of Blues Traveler fame. Also, a good many Deadheads just want to have a jolly good time and be let alone...almost libertarian and hardly negative in their views.

I'll let Bobby take it from here (Throwing Stones):

Picture a bright blue ball, just spinning, spinnin free,
Dizzy with eternity.
Paint it with a skin of sky,
Brush in some clouds and sea,
Call it home for you and me.
A peaceful place or so it looks from space,
A closer look reveals the human race.
Full of hope, full of grace
Is the human face,
But afraid we may lay our home to waste.

There's a fear down here we can't forget.
Hasn't got a name just yet.
Always awake, always around,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Now watch as the ball revolves
And the nighttime falls.
Again the hunt begins,
Again the bloodwind calls.
By and by, the morning sun will rise,
But the darkness never goes
From some men's eyes.
It strolls the sidewalks and it rolls the streets,
Staking turf, dividing up meat.
Nightmare spook, piece of heat,
It's you and me.
You and me.

Click flash blade in ghetto night,
Rudies looking for a fight.
Rat cat alley, roll them bones.
Need that cash to feed that jones.
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

[Bridge:]
Commissars and pin-stripe bosses
Roll the dice.
Any way they fall,
Guess who gets to pay the price.
Money green or proletarian gray,
Selling guns 'stead of food today.

So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Heartless powers try to tell us
What to think.
If the spirit's sleeping,
Then the flesh is ink
History's page will thus be carved in stone.
And we are here, and we are on our own
On our own.
On our own.
On our own.

[Instrumental]

If the game is lost,
Then we're all the same.
No one left to place or take the blame.
We can leave this place and empty stone
Or that shinin' ball we used to call our home.

So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And the politicians throwin' stones,
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

[Bridge two:] Shipping powders back and forth
Singing black goes south and white comes north.
In a whole world full of petty wars
Singing I got mine and you got yours.
And the current fashion sets the pace,
Lose your step, fall out of grace.
And the radical, he rant and rage,
Singing someone's got to turn the page.
And the rich man in his summer home,
Singing just leave well enough alone.
But his pants are down, his cover's blown...

And the politicians throwin' stones,
So the kids they dance
And shake their bones,
And it's all too clear we're on our own.
Singing ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Picture a bright blue ball,
Just spinnin', spinnin, free.
Dizzy with the possibilities.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.
Ashes, ashes, all fall down.

Rudolph Giuliani blasts 9/11 Commission

"Our enemy is not each other, but the terrorists who attacked us," Giuliani said in his opening statement to the panel. The mayor acknowledged there were "terrible mistakes" made on Sept. 11, but attributed that to the unprecedented circumstances.
Giuliani appeared to be trying to deflect criticism from his former police and fire chiefs, who were widely hailed after the attacks but harshly criticized Tuesday for failing to communicate effectively on Sept. 11. Commissioner John Lehman called the lapses a scandal "not worthy of the Boy Scouts, let alone this great city."

You know, maybe it's wrong to think this way, but I have a hard time taking a woman wearing a Muslim head scarf seriously. Even more so a woman wearing a burka.

Why? Because they do not seem to be in control of their own lives. They do not seem to be liberated. They seem to let the men control what they say, so how can I tell if they are saying what they really feel if they are under threat from men, or even other women?

How can a woman who is under threat of death for showing her ankles say what she really thinks??? The burka and head scarf are symbols that someone else is in control of them.

I know there are many Muslim women who go around in 'western' clothing without the burka or hijjab (however you spell it). Though they are further up the ladder as far as liberation goes, they are still in danger.

I had some girl friends in college who were Muslim, and they had boyfriends. I couldn't tell anyone. They said if word got back to their parents, it would spell big trouble for them. Little did I know! They never told me about 'honor killings'. They did not wear burkas or scarves, and they were beautiful women. Of course they had boyfriends! I hope that they are even more liberated now than they were then.

Gene Simmons is right. They treat women terribly in Islam. Men are not evil, but radical Islam can cause a person to become evil. I hope that Islamic women will be totally free some day.

I doubt most people here are so concerned about the precise definition of a neacon. I consider myself on independent who leans right on most issues, maybe left on others.

A good number of posters have identified themselves as 9/10 LLLs who've decided the WoT is the most important issue. Several have identified themselves as gay, but that issue seldom brings more than an occasional comment. I don't care what gays do and it's fine with me if they make lifetime commitments with all the legal implications of hetero marriages. However, "marriage" has had a specific meaning for a few thousand years. I think they should come up with a new term. It's pointless to offend traditionalist over a term, and what they want is different from what marriage has always been. They came up with the terms "gay" and "lesbian" because its not the same. They can come up with a term for their "marriages."

I think most here are capitalist and individuals, and would prefer less gov't intrusion into their lives, and do not want gov't programs to solve every social problem.

But the main attraction of LGF is that it's a forum for people who believe the WoT and the threat of Islamic fundamentalism are the most serious problems faced by the USA and the West in general.

I would never vote for any Democrat for a national office. I think they're dangerous in many areas: foreign policy, US sovereignty, a threat to free enterprise, a threat to individual freedom, etc, etc. They're almost a socialist party, and the few conservative Demos are retiring more each election cycle. I have disagreements with Republicans, but the national Demos are borderline fucking nuts.

Posters say fairly often that they will cast their first vote for a Republican presidential candidate in 2004 because of the WoT. I doubt the so-called neocons will return to the Demo fold if Kerry wins. I don't think foreign policy is the only issue that concerns neocons.

The Grateful Dead and sister bands, like Ratdog, Planet Drum, Jerry Garcia Band, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Phil Lesh and Friends, as well as later incarnations of the Grateful Dead post Jerry (Peace TRULY be Upon Him!), allow their shows to be recorded by the audience, so it is sport to keep a setlist and figure out the next song as early as possible, because each show changes, and the interpolations change in often weird and wonderous ways (pending on your state of mind).

Recently, because of the War in Iraq, our letters pages have become a forum for all sorts of views. A few of you have expressed concern and sometimes outrage at some of my responses. And, perhaps a word of explanation is in order.

First, and most important, I stand by my words.

I don't often use words like "fuck", "ass" or "balls." However, when appropriate and certainly here, in my own web site, I will do as I please. This is my house and at my home, I freely express myself. You are free to visit other sites that might not offend you.

I have said in this political climate, that I am ashamed of the behavior of people who call themselves either members of the Democratic Party (whose politics I usually support, incidentally) or as Liberals (funny, I always thought I was one). But, I will not hesitate to tell someone off. I believe in a form of politics that supercedes philosophical discussions. I believe in Pragmatism.

Pacifism is a beautiful word. No one wants war. Not you. Not I. But, the most passionate Pacifist is only relatively so. What I mean is, it's easy to be a Pacifist here in America. That's because Hussein and other menaces are far away. The closer a gun is pointed to your head, the less of a Pacifist you are...the more you're interested in stopping the guy pointing the gun to your head.

Granted. Saddam Hussein never pointed a gun to my head. I also never want to wait long enough for him to do so. PRE-EMPTIVE WAR is one of the realities we all have to face. There will never be another 9/11...and I could give a shit if there is or isn't a direct line to Hussein. He had to go. Period. That regime wouldn't think twice about giving an extremist a suitcase filled with a dirty bomb.

I am passionate about America. It has given me (and in my estimation, the world) everything I ever wanted... including the right to disagree, without winding up in a can of dog food. And, because of my passionate love of America, warts and all, I will stand up and defend her at the drop of a hat.

Is America always right? No. But for 100 years, it seems to me, it has gotten most of it right. The most powerful force the world has ever known is not conquering other countries. Previous world powers, had a colonial agenda. This included at various times in history: Rome, Greece, Nazi Germany, France, England, Communist Russia and Persia. There are more.

But, aside from the French complaining (don't they always?) about the influx of the AMERICAN CULTURE, I don't see America expanding its borders...All the countries in the world are free to rule themselves as they see fit...as long as they don't threaten anyone else.

So, the letter column has tended to veer towards your letters. I didn't push it there. You did. DON'T START SOMETHING, UNLESS YOU WANT TO FINISH IT. If you write letters and are willing to give...you better be willing to get.

Because I give as good as I get.

"America, love it or leave it?" I never subscribed to that ideal. It's actually UnAmerican. I DO believe in different opinions. But, I am also ashamed of any American especially, who gets up on stage in a different country to badmouth America, while American troops are dying in a desert country they would never want to live in.

Is that behavior giving aid and comfort to the enemy? You bet your fuckin' ass. In jail, when you misbehave, you get bitch slapped, or you become someone's bitch

In life, you should be held accountable for anything that comes out of your mouth, not just your ass.

Yelling FIRE in a movie theater, is NOT freedom of speech.

The war, for the most part is over. The British and the Aussies, (God bless em both,) amid a murky political situation, stood alongside Americans and did what had to be done.

The Iraqi's are free.

I suggest anyone having a problem with this war go talk to the Iraqi's. Ask them if they prefer freedom (even at the price of, initially having what seems to be chaos), or if they prefer Saddam Hussein come back and reinstates the old ways.

I DARE anyone to say the Iraqi's were better off before, under Hussein.

And, after the war dies down, and people here in America go back to normalcy, there will be people who say that they are "non-violent." You don't want to get into fights. But, what that really means is, you don't want to pick on anybody.

Problem is, the bad guys don't always agree with you. You see, if you're against violence and some guy holds a gun to your head and asks you for your money, you better re-think your position. You better become VERY VIOLENT at that moment. Or, you're dead.

Being a Pacifist, is an ideal. I subscribe to it. I'm against violence. But, only CONCEPTUALLY, if you threaten my children, I wouldn't think twice about snapping your neck on the spot. I suspect most people would take my view.

You can tell by the length of this missive, that this issue has gotten under my skin. So, I'll try to recap my feelings, in brief. Get ready, 'cause here comes the truth:

America is the world's only hope for a bright future.

Yes. I mean that. Yes, I know you live in another country and your country is cool, too. But, America is the only Superpower. There are no others. And that means, the world is a better place. Because if Nazi Germany or Communist Russia were the only superpowers, we would all be either dead or forced to live under their regimes.

America is not interested in ruling your country. If you think it does, smoking crack may be your answer.

I wasn't born here. But, I have a love for this country and its people that knows no bounds. I will forever be grateful to America for going into World War II, when it had nothing to gain, in a country that was far away...and rescued my Mother from the Nazi German Concentration Camps.

She is alive and I am alive because of America.

And, if you have a problem with America, YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ME.

On the women front Simmons is ahead of me 6,000 to 1.

We know that, Gordon.

The tongue is a freak of nature (and I emphasize "freak") And Shannon Tweed was hot in about 1980 - she's probably had to have more than a few tucks by now to keep up appearances.

So are you saying that guys should only date "hot" women?

I have one more anti-idiotarian actor to add to the list: Gary Sinise.

I saw him on Scarborough Country (I think it was last week) and he was none too pleased at the media's coverage of the war in Iraq - negative, negative, negative.

He was there to talk about his project - Operation Iraqi Children - and to remind us all at how much good US soldiers are doing in Iraq.

Good for him.

Australian Muslim of the year is from Vermont! Here's a quote from the Australian newspaper theage.com.au:

At times, she says she has been let down by certain attitudes within the Muslim community on issues of gender and race. She believes that what she and a growing number of Islamic feminists around the world are arguing for is the authentic Islam. "These are issues of justice. Men should be angry about them as well. What sort of a man places his security on the subjugation of women?"

Yeah stoning women to death is a real let down.

I have to admit that I wasn't a big KISS fan. I like KISS music, have a couple of albums and have friends who swear by KISS, but I preferred Metallica to KISS - I liked the music better.

However Gene's definitely an upstanding chap and the comments posted by #361 prove it. Too bad that Metallica's recent claim to fame is canning Napster and being against everything they stood for in their early years (accepting bootleg tapes of their concerts to get their name out there - which is how they built their rep in the first place).

Since this also seems to be the thread where one lists concerts attended, here are some of mine:

Woodstock '94 (Aerosmith, Metallica, NIN - incidentally the best of the show, Henry Rollins, CSN, Melissa Etheridge, Spin Doctors, Violent Femmes)

GnR, Faith No More, and Metallica at Giants Stadium (concert that happened a couple days before ol' Axl decided to not go on with concert in Montreal, and all heck broke loose.)

Pink Floyd at Giants Stadium (did DSotM - need I say any more?)

Emerson, Lake and Palmer - at GSAC (had back stage passes - great show, and nice guys)

Genesis - at Giants Stadium (great show, great sound, effects)

Bruce Springsteen - Giants Stadium (Rising tour)

Rush - Pepsi Arena, Albany

Others that come to mind:
Billy Joel, ZZ Top, Black Crowes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Meatloaf.

#373 lawhawk:

OK, if we're listing concerts, I've got a good one.

In the 80's I saw Bob Dylan and Neil Young At Exhibition Stadium in Toronto. Bob seemed to be on a pretty good bender. He had as his back-up band at the time G.E. Smith (of SNL fame) and his band. Anyways, long story short, every time Bob went into a solo, he'd forget what song they were playing and just sort of meander. After a couple of minutes, G.E. Smith would casually stroll over and whisper the lyrics in Bob's ear. Dylan would then remember the song and start, er, crooning again.

This happened at least 10 times.

First, you have no idea which women he has slept with and neither do I. My feeling is he must have slept with many women who weren't technically "hot", but were "hot" on the inside.

Second, if you think women are his main goal in life you're wrong. Just like you and me, Gene has lots of goals.

I saw Bob Dylan in 1996. He sung maybe six or eight lyric lines during the entire concert. It was almost purely instrumental for about two hours. I wondered if that was just his mood that night, if he couldn't remember the lines, or what. But it was a great instrumental concert.

Have you noticed how it's A-OK, hunky-dory, business-as-usual when a wild-eyed liberal nutcase mixes "the entertainment world with the political and religious world," but when somebody who doesn't buy into the media's carefully-honed propaganda about Muslims speaks his mind, it's suddenly "a minefield"?

I also can't help but notice that the oh-so-thorough Associated Press researchers neglected to mention Simmons' degree from M.I.T., or his extensive donations to worldwide children's charities. They did, however, manage to slide in the fact that he was born in Israel. Now, who're really the facists, here?

Good for Gene, I say. I've always liked the band, and him in particular, and I'm glad to see that at least a few celebrities--John-Rhys Davies said something similar in Europe a while back--are willing to stand up and say what the majority of Americans are already thinking: Islam, with its medieval, backward, oppressive ideals and whack-job homicidal psuedo-theology created this mess we're in, so let's stop pussy-footing around and lay the blame where it belongs. After all, this isn't exactly the first time they've tried to wipe Judeo-Christian civilization off the face of the Earth. It's time to face up to the real problem and begin dealing with it, before another skyscraper full of innocents is turned into a memorial site.

Please excuse the long post, but this thread is about Gen's words.

[Link: www.maniahill.com...]

Terry Gross: You write in your book you've had 4,600 sexual liaisons --

Gene Simmons: You're supposed to say "so far."

Terry Gross: So far.

Gene Simmons: Right.

Terry Gross: To you, this will be asking the obvious, but why have you wanted so many encounters?

Gene Simmons: I can only spell it in three letters. M-A-N. When a woman ... and, look, I'm not here to say that I'm a scientist, or pretend or portend to be anything else -- those are semantics of course, but then neither you or I are anti-semantic. The notion is plain. And I read a book called Myth of Monogamy, which actually, sort of, uh, approached the subject and verbalized it, and I finally understood what it was. Because every woman suspects that the man she's laying next to is not necessarily going to be, well, "faithful" is the word. And privately she tells her girlfriends, "Oh God, all men are dogs." You're correct. And I'm here to tell you that in my deluded , uh, perspective, perhaps, it's biological. The first, "man" -- and women -- if man was predisposed to be monogamous, and we all lived in caves at that point, there were one or two alpha males, and the rest were females. Either way, if we were monogamous, within one or two generations, we would all be cross-eyed and retarded. Get it?

Terry Gross: So let me ask this. You say you've had sex with about 4,600 people. Women.

Gene Simmons: Women. Yes.

Terry Gross: Um, do you actually count? I mean do you have, like, a book --

Gene Simmons: You know, you know, I never --

Terry Gross: -- in which you keep hash marks, or --

Gene Simmons: I never paid much attention to it, because I've always lived my life the way my mother taught me to live with, which is that every day above ground is a good day. Don't look over your shoulder at society's rules, or whether or not you please anybody else except you, because at the end of your life, right before they stick you underground, you can't go into the "would'a, could'a, should'a." You can't do that great Jewish joke. What's a great Jewish whine? "I wanna go to Palm Springs." Doesn't fly. You're responsible for your own happiness, and women have to get that notion of, don't look to your guy. You have to figure out what makes you happy. And I did, a long time ago. I'm an only child, and I had a lot of time to figure it out. And so what I figured out a long time ago was, every day should be enjoyable, a, if you will, um, Epicurean hedonist. Look it up in your Funk & Wagnall's. And what it means is, life is the pursuit of pleasure. And I've done very well pursuing it. And so the band has been around 30 years. We're right behind the Beatles in the number of gold records by any groups in history. Somebody likes us. Women, and their sisters, and their moms, seem to want to express their adoration and/or fan-worship, or perhaps they want to see if my oral appendage actually does have a spin-and-dry cycle, and whether or not it has the ability to whip up a good froth. Ladies, I'm here to tell you it does. So for whatever reason they deem me worthy of their companionship, I was more than glad to oblige. And so, almost 30 years ago, I started taking photos. Polaroids. And I still have them to this day. And so, when the book was being written, Crown Publishers, who published my book, wanted to know -- you know, you can't just say "I did this" and "I did that," you have to give specifics. So I sat down and started counting. One, two, and so on. And arrived at about 4,600 and change.

Gene:

Terry Gross: Let's talk about your background. Uh, you were born in Israel, several years after the war ended. Your mother, during the war, was in a Nazi concentration camp. Um, do you have any memories of life in Israel?

Gene Simmons: I do. The German Nazi concentration camps, in WWII, which the entire German population -- or enough of it that you can say the German population -- bought into hook, line, and sinker, was the result of my mother's and millions of other people's misery. And Israel was a strange place anyway. It was certainly not an easy place to go to, but six months after the "independence" of Israel was recognized by the U.N. and who knows who else, I popped out. So, where I was born was really an accident like everyone else, and growing up in Israel was sort of like being in a box where you're not aware that the outside worlds exists. I certainly never saw a television set. I didn't know about Kleenex or supermarkets or anything. All I knew was you heard stories in school about David and Goliath and, you know, all these wonderful great superhero stories -- and the sea is splitting open and wide and our people go through it and then it crashes again on the Egyptians -- you know, all these great stories, but, and then people slowly started to tell me: No, no, this is the place it happened, you're actually living in it. It was tough to take it. So at eight-and-a-half years of age, when I came over to America with my mother, it was like being thrown into another dimension. I'd never heard of Santa Claus or Christ or Christmas, never knew anything about Christians or that there were other kinds of people. And from then on I became a sponge. I wanted to just take it all in. It was just way beyond anything I could ever imagine. And television. The great television. And rock and roll. And horror movies and science fiction and comic books were my education. And I thank God that those were what I learned instead of having to read Jane Eyre at an early age, because it wasn't anything -- it wasn't anything I could relate to.

Terry Gross: I know you went to a yeshiva as a boy, were you from an orthodox family?

Gene Simmons: No, nobody in the family was orthodox, but when I came to America, my mother, being a single mother, had to go out and work, from 6:00 in the morning till 7:00 at night, so she put me in a yeshiva, which is a Jewish theological seminary. In other words, you're studying to be somebody, and I was studying to be a rabbi. And they fed me and clothed me, and you sort of take care of your child that way, you don't have to worry that your child is on the street. And so while I was there I saw one world, the closed world. And when I turned on television, people were flying through the air and they had capes and there were cartoons and, you know, just amazing things. And I wanted to go there. I thought that was a lot cooler than yarmulkes.

Terry Gross: What's your mother's reaction to KISS?

Gene Simmons: Well, it's interesting. Good question. My mother is probably the wisest person I've ever known. She's not schooled, she's not well-read. But she has a philosophy of life that makes well-read people seem like morons. She doesn't talk a lot, uses very few words to express herself (unlike myself, who likes the sound of his own voice). So here's a woman who'd been through the German Nazi concentration camps of WWII and still thought that there was goodness in humanity and thought about the fact that the glass was half full instead of half empty. And when asked, well, "What about your son? He's in this weird rock band, he's ... dresses weird and, you know, apparently he has lots of liaisons with girls and stuff ... What do you think about that?" She says, "Well, as long as he doesn't use drugs and alcohol and doesn't hurt anybody, I don't care about the rest." You know what? She's right.

Terry Gross: You've said that you don't use drugs.

Gene Simmons: Never have.

Terry Gross: And you've never had a drink of alcohol.

Gene Simmons: That's not true. I've never been drunk.

Terry Gross: You've never been drunk. That's right. Yeah. Yeah.

Gene Simmons: I, literally, at parties, when somebody says "toast," I try to take a sip. But, without saying it for effect, it's true when as soon as I smell alcohol I start to gag. I may be blessed with some kind of chemical reaction against it, but I won't go near the most beautiful woman who's got my name written all over her if she opens her mouth and smells like a truck driver who's just drank Bud. I'm outta there. Gone. It always struck me bizarre that women are willing to paint their mouths beautifully with lipstick and yet smoke and drink and make their breath smell like ... a garbage heap. So ... I can't do that. I can't be around people who numb their senses. Everybody's allowed as far as I'm concerned to take their own like or numb themselves to oblivion, but I could care less. I have no sympathy for anybody who has the -- lives in America, especially, and who decides, You know what, I'm going to numb myself. Drugs, alcohol, cigarettes ... So I'm happy to be alive every single day. And I want my senses working 24 hours a day. And if you were in my room and we were going to have a liaison, and you were high, you'd be out on your butt before you could spell your last name. Because if you don't want to experience me with all the senses God gave you, you don't deserve to be with me.

Terry Gross: Um, you know, you -- you --

Gene Simmons: I think you should.

Terry Gross: -- you said you don't have sympathy for that guy on the roof who keeps saying, "I'm going to jump."

Gene Simmons: None.

Terry Gross: But my impression is you don't have much sympathy for anyone. You -- you're so into yourself! You're just so deep into yourself.

Gene Simmons: Well, I think ... I think everybody should be. If it sounds like admiration coming out of you, I accept it. I think ... it -- life is too short to have anything but delusional notions about yourself. Which is -- you should really like yourself more than you deserve to, because the alternative isn't very good. You should really think you are better looking than you are, because the alternative is ... sort of ... you know, some ... some bad notions. And so I'm aware, as a sane person, that I'm not the best-looking guy in the world. I'm aware of it. But when I go into a party, I will walk out with your girlfriend.

Your dog, however, can walk side by side, your dog is allowed to have its own dog house... you can send your dog to school to learn tricks, sit, beg, do all that stuff none of the women have that advantage.

Humf! Well, I for one, am very much in favor of sending a wife to school to learn how to do tricks, sit up, and beg!

Hell yes!! Time to go download some old KISS songs.

Gene Simmons refuses to be a phony and a pansy. I remember when he was on "Fresh Err" with that snide little unit Terry Gross, even then he was a crude, loud, take-no-shit rocker. He tells it straight, like it or not. I remember that interview was when the entire Left (including all the former rockers who now drive VWs and read the New Yorker) decided as one to hate him forever and ever. This interview just seals the deal.

This bit made me spit:

"The radio station today fielded calls from Muslims upset at the comments, including Australian Muslim of the year Susan Carland, who said Australian Muslims rejected extremism and did not fit Simmons’ stereotype.
Ms Carland said she had two degrees, was doing her honours and “certainly do not walk behind my husband”."

No, DUH "Ms." Carland, that's because you are in THE WEST. The same civilization that your co-religionists are trying to destroy. If you were in, say, Saudi, or better yet Sudan, you might not have quite the same luxuries and priviliges.

425 Ringo the Gringo  Wed, May 19, 2004 11:28:55am

It seems that the women (and Gordon) are not quite as impressed with Mr. Simmons as are the men folk...

C'mon ladies can't you muster a little love for a hairy, horney, Jewish rocker with a 10 inch tounge and a polaroid?

426 Sergio  Wed, May 19, 2004 11:32:22am

Reading over the comments I see that the Terry Gross interview with Gene Simmons hit a bit of a nerve. I think it might just represent a small generational parting of the ways. People seem to see that interview from two opposite perspectives. Plenty of people think she is a brilliant, serious, forthright journalist of unassailable moral and intellectual purity. I personally think Terry is a snide, po-mo, holier-than-all elitist who can't take a joke, can't roll and can't hang. Her interviews always occur in the context of tremendous reverence and presumption. Specifically the guest presuming Terry's holiness and the perfect goodness of NPR and the serious intellectual and moral atmoshere of "public" radio, yadda yadda. She's smug in her interviewing and her listeners are smug in their listening. So you can imagine Simmons blowing in there; obnoxious, loud, bufoonish, ridiculous, funny, happy and fun. His lack of Respect for the whole NPR thing must have enfuriated everyone from Terry to her staff to the producer to the army of interns. How *dare* he. He probably caught the vibe and went right along with it. Good for him. I'd like to have a beer with him.

He's right. The issue isn't what Islam really teaches or does not teach. The issue is what our enemies believe it teaches. And they believe in things that are clearly evil, inhuman and should be annihilated from the face of the earth.

And by the way, if we really hated Islam, why would we allow so many Arabs to come into the States and freely practice their religion?

Practice whatever the hell you want as long as you don't harm other people. There are people who keep saying we should respect other countries and religions - now why the f*** should I respect a culture that stones women to death for wearing the wrong sort of clothing, or straps bombs to 10-year-olds??? A thing like this deserves no respect or tolerance. A thing like this deserves to be wiped out completely, so that the world can become a better place. And I don't care whether this thing is called Islam or whatever.

Lately, comments that have been attributed to me in the press have been printed. They are false. Please use your own logic and best judgement when reading media. Sometimes media is responsible and sometimes, it is not.

You know me. And, I believe your instincts will guide you in determining what is real and what is not.

My paternal grandfather was Dutch. They had a prosperous farm that was ruined by the Nazis and rationing. Throughout the war he consistently risked his life hiding Jews and members of the underground in his barn. After the war, he got the farm back together only to lose it again after the floods in '51, providing the impetus to emigrate. Yet he was a man that laughed constantly. Once when I asked him about it, he told me "God smiles on those who laugh, because it proves they love Him"

Great man.

I agree, the Dutch have kinda become freakshows. That said, the area of Ontario our family settled in was predominately Dutch. It's a really weird juxtapostion. The Dutch that settled there show the
extremely conservative values that Holland seemed to use to represent, in contrast with the Dutch in Holland.

And they still spend 6+ hours a week in church. Makes me pretty happy my mother was pretty agnostic.

I always chuckled about the difference. The Dutch Reform church of my Dad lets you do nothing. My mother's Unitarian church lets you do anything.

475 Free Speech Is Only For Uber-Libs  Wed, May 19, 2004 6:12:51pm

ugh- they are freakshows, aren't they. My neighbor's son is currently going to school in Holland. (he is one of those eternal college students.) He reports back that the anti-Americanism on the street in Holland is so bad that even HE is bothered by it. And my neighbor's son is a total leftie.

The Dutch reformed church - that brings back memories. My fathers family settled in Wisconsin. I was unaware of a large Dutch settlement in Ontario. Makes sense though, sort of the same region and I bet there's good farm land in that area.

Cam,

What a difference a few decades makes. When I was at Kibbutz Reshafim in the 70s, most of the non-Jewish volunteers were Dutch. They were very pro-Israeli and moderately pro-American...certainly they treated me well, even to the point of disdaining those who spoke Dutch in my presence (since they were all fluent in English). On the return trip, I was even a welcome guest in the home of one of them. The patriarch of the family had lived through WWII, and remembered the day Allied troops came through and liberated Holland.

Seems those with the most things to remember and learn from are the first to forget.

Dutch who hid Jews from Nazis honored as Righteous Gentiles
LOS ANGELES (JTA) -- "I don't feel like a hero," 91-year old Annie Schipper said. "I did what I had to do."

What Schipper and her husband, Pieter, "had to do" in 1942 was hide a young Jewish couple with a baby son in their small apartment in Amsterdam, at the risk of their own lives.
---

The role of the Dutch people during the Holocaust is somewhat ambiguous, Fred Kort, president of the West Coast Friends of Yad Vashem, pointed out in his talk.

On the one hand, 75 percent of Dutch Jews perished during the Holocaust, the highest percentage in any country in Nazi-occupied Europe, except for Poland.

On the other hand, among the 18,000 Righteous Gentiles officially recognized by Yad Vashem, 4,000 are Dutch, by far the largest national contingent in Europe.

Free: I so adore Macy and those guys that were in Fargo. Every one of them..a total Jewel. Im so glad they are having success ..Dontcha all love those "character" actors? Just great.

Macy did this movie about a Door to Door Salesman that played on TV about a year ago..It was...just...(I dont have all the words)..dear, sweet, decent, wonderful, inspiring, ...lovely...tender...What can I say..It was GREAT. Think he might have won something for the part? Emmy? Maybe??? not sure but he should have if he didnt...

Ill try to find the name of the Movie. Anyone know it..just put it here in this thead. Its definately worth a RENT if you havent seen it. Its a lovely little movie.

#488 Leah:

I hope you enjoyed your near-beer the other night.

William Macy was in my home town last week leading a petition collection drive to get Ralph Nader on the ballot.

Just kidding...

And all the rest of whom for which to whensoever of partially indeterminate bio-chemical degredation. Seek the path to the sudsy yellow nozzle of their foaming nocturnal parametric digital whole-wheat inter-faith geo-thermal terpsichorean ejectamenta. -- From board tape at Zappa concert, outdoors, at Blossom Music Center, Akron, Ohio, summer 1984. This quote was in the middle of a spoken section of "The Mud Club" in which a dude walks into the club with a blue Mohawk and proceeds to "work the floor, work the wall, work the monitor system. . . ." The band was having monitor feedback problems at the Blossom concert, and there are numerous references to P.A. equipment throughout this ramble. Other than that, the quote is meaningless, I guess. But great imagery!
