Death of an Intifada

Wed, Jun 2, 2004 at 9:26:38 am PDT

Note to Palestinians and their Western enablers: the intifada is over. The fence is working; you can’t get into Israel any more to slaughter children on buses. The few remaining terrorist thugs are no longer welcome in Tulkarem; they lower the property value and people who hang with them end up without houses. (Hat tip: Amy.)

Hani Aweideh looks like he hasn’t quite grown into his new role as a militia leader. Clean-cut with neatly coiffed hair, pressed beige jeans and a matching polo shirt with embroidered trim around the collar, the only thing that distinguishes this 26-year-old from the ordinary young men of Tul Karm is the AK-47 he brings with him when he emerges out of hiding for an afternoon rendezvous in an anonymous downtown store.

Aweideh handles the gun awkwardly, though with obvious reverence, asking for a plastic bag to hide it in for the short hop from the backseat of a car into the store. Not long ago Aweideh and his comrades from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades — the armed cells, affiliated with Yasser Arafat’s Fatah movement, that sprung up with the intifada — would have been swaggering through the streets of this West Bank market town, inspiring admiration in some residents, terrorizing others and plotting what they call “military operations” against nearby Jewish settlements or Israeli cities that lie over the Green Line, the pre-1967 border that skirts Tul Karm to the west.

But the armed men are not walking around here anymore, certainly not in broad daylight. The few of them left after the army’s frequent raids, targeted killings and arrests are said to be feeling hunted and alone. And while predictions of calm times ahead may be premature, many here are already declaring Tul Karm’s intifada over.

“Everybody’s either dead or in prison,” says Nidal Jallad, who is hanging around the store shortly before Aweideh makes his entry. “It’s over. We’ve had enough. All we want now is for the prisoners to come home.” One of Nidal’s brothers, a Hamas activist, was caught in March 2003 transporting an explosive belt from Nablus in a car with three others, including the would-be suicide bomber. He is now serving a 17-year sentence in Beersheba jail. Another brother, Nidal says, was shot by an Israeli army sniper during a curfew and is just starting to walk again after four operations. Nidal claims his brother was only outside because soldiers had taken him from his house, dropped him off near the hospital, then ordered him to walk home.

Nidal is the cousin of Malik Jallad, known as Jarira, the last commander of the Tul Karm Qata’eb, or Brigades, who was captured four months ago. When Aweideh comes in, he introduces himself as Jarira’s successor, though other local sources say the arrested leader hasn’t been replaced. There’s nobody left of the serious hard core of the Brigades, they say, only the remnants of Jarira’s junior lieutenants such as Aweideh inside the city and “a few thieves” in the two local refugee camps. The mounting tensions between the city and camp militants have turned them more into rivals than brothers-in-arms.

It’s over, Ahmed. Time to make some compromises, deal with the situation like responsible adults, and get on with building an accountable, mature society that will offer more to its children than martyrdom.

I can dream, can’t I?

So that they're free to plot and kill again.

Instead of this story, WaPo today reported how the fence and border closures cause massive unemployment and poverty in Gaza: residents can't get to their jobs in Israel.
Sorry, not a lot of sympathy for them. Maybe there is a reason the jobs are in Israel and not Gaza? Time was when I couldn't find a job, so I moved.

There is hope for the Palestinians. Look at the Germans and the Japanese today, compared to 1945.

So all it takes is total defeat and about 30 years. And that was for two technologically advanced, if ideologically primitive, societies. Add about 20 more years for the Palestinians, and that should do it.

Israel is doing the right thing. It's the only way the Palestinians will learn to be a civilized society.

It's also amazing, but not surprising, that the WaPo doesn't see any irony in this.

Completing the fence (or at least the most vital sections) and securing Israel from the Palestinian terrorists on the other side is prerequisite to Israel tackling the terrorists in Lebanon (in 2005/2006?).

Assuming Bush wins re-election, and we do go after Syria, we might want Israel to take care of the Lebanese front at that time. Does this sound realistic?

38 BIG  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 8:18:59am

Every peace offer the Israelis make to the PLO-Arabs should contain less than the previous offer. The PLO-Arabs need to learn that their actions have consequences. After a few more uprisings, they will be offered exactly what they deserve, NOTHING!

Aid workers among 5 dead in Afghan ambush

The aid workers include the notoriously anti-American Medecins Sans Frontieres. My favorite quote:

"It's too early to say who's behind this," Naibzada said by telephone from a car taking him to the scene.

Au contraire, as John Kerry would say. Someone has already taken responsibility for this attack.

Mullah Abdul Hakim Latifi, a purported spokesman for the Taliban, called AP and said the remnants of the former Afghan regime carried out the attack at 4 p.m. and gave the location where it took place. He said more attacks would follow.

Personally I find the efforts of these NGO types to remain 'neutral' to be amusing. It should be obvious by now, especially in a place like Afghanistan, that the enemies of civilization don't care.

It's only a matter of time before this happens.

I feel like blowing a huge "I-told-you-so" raspberry at all those "Greater Israel" types who resisted the fence idea for so long. There is only one reason it's taken this long: the greedy ideology that says Israel has to hold on to the entire West Bank. No this doesn't mean I'm blaming the victim etc. But it shouldn't have taken this many dead Israelis to get the fence built.

I know this is OT to this thread and prob. belongs in the mullah "no nukes I swear wink wink" thread (but that one seems dead), but our salvation is revealed!

Kerry pledges that as president he would eliminate or secure all unguarded nuclear material in the world within four years

Woo Hooo! Pop the bubbly!!! Look out mullahs and li'l Kim, John is coming for your glowing rods!!

Kerry said he would name a presidential coordinator, based in the White House, to focus on preventing nuclear terrorism. He also said he would end U.S. development of a new generation of nuclear weapons, speed up reduction of the U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals, negotiate a global ban on production of material for nuclear weapons and be prepared to talk directly with North Korea (news - web sites) about its nuclear program.

Ah, a coordinator. And a new global ban. The apparent logic and efficacy of this plan is above my simple faculties I guess. Verrrry nuanced.

Oh, and stopping research on new technology and destroying our arsenal. That is sure to convince Iran and NoKo that we mean business. We will lead by example! If we stop researching nuclear technology and give up our arsenal, so will our enemies. WOW. PROFOUND.

Plus, he'll negotiate DIRECTLY with NoKo. I can see it now, Prez Kerry walking off the plane waving a piece of paper, with the written assurances of Li'l Kim. Peace in Our Time!!!

We need to do that fence here in the US on our borders
It would be National defense issue. All sections could be prefab andtrucked or railed there. Most areas are empty
so there the fence would go up fast. If the Fence goes up, then when we have amnesty again, we can figure out what to do next. It is sad to see it come to this issue but perhaps a national ID card from everyone is the way to go. Social Sec number is one already and the govt can track anyone thru atm and credit cards.
So when we get the card, anyone who doesn't have one gets a ticket out of the country.

It can take less than an hour for terrorists to find an excuse - ANY excuse - to continue attacking Israelis. Then all the jihadi websites will lie about how they were trying to be peaceful but Israel provoked them.

'Hope' is for fools when dealing with an obsessed and religous enemy. The security fence will only delay the fight until the jihadists modify their tactics.

It's amazing that people seem to forget, almost daily, that they blow up their own children and are willing to commit suicide to kill Jews and infidels.

More like hallucinate. But still...

Funny but that was precisely what I thought.

Do you think the Palestinians can ever get to a point where they accept that Israel is here to stay and they just have to learn to live with it?

OT- New Democratic Party rep was by my house today begging for my vote. I pointed out this part of the platform-

"Ensuring Canada plays a leading role with likeminded nations in working for peace and justice in the middle east within a framework for respect for UN resolutions and international law and including the rights of both Israelis and Palestinians to live in peaceful coexistence in viable independent states, negotiated agreed upon borders, no settlements remaining in the Palestinian state, and end to Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, an end to all killings of innocent civilians, and an international peacekeeping presence."

Where to begin? Like minded nations such as Syria? Saudi Arabia? Peaceful coexistence with people who openly boast about wanting to kill you? Negotiate with people who break every agreement and lie at every possible turn? Israeli 'occupation'? Wow, guess whose side they are on. Killing of innocent civilians." [Of course everyone knows Jews are never innocent, only Palestinians] "and the UN? That corrupt anti-Semitic organization that can't even bring itself to condemn the slaughter of Jewish children? Hah!

Obviously Jacko got one of their NDP cofellow members of "Solidarity With Palestinian Human Rights" to write that section up for him. Maybe he even sent another NDP member to fly over and get Arafat's approval.

Notice how the AK-47 is the only thing that distinguishes Hani from the other young men of Tul Karm. It isn't his freshly coiffed hair or immaculate duds. Apparently the life of a refugee in Palestine isn't quite as bad as in the Congo, where one must blow UN Peacekeepers for ones daily bread. Nevertheless, please give generously.

Security fence has stopped theft as well as violence directed at Jews from Arabs.

From Jpost

Judging by Danny Attar's grin, he is a content man. The crusade the Gilboa Regional Council head helped launch three years ago, demanding a security fence between the West Bank and Israel as the only way to stop terror, has yielded unforeseen dividends.

He fired off his favorite new statistics as he drove along the security fence in the northern West Bank: "Instead of 600 terrorist incidents per year around here, in the last five months we've had zero. Tens of thousands of illegal Palestinian workers would cross through here every year; in the past five months, you've got it, zero. And guess what? Theft is way down too."

He has swapped last year's weapons – accusations of criminal negligence by the government for its failure to quickly build the fence – for those new stats and some smiles.

And while Attar and Afula Mayor Yitzhak Meron are increasingly optimistic, neither can exactly say their respective economies are booming. But both attribute a clear improvement in their constituents' mood, sense of security, and, in some cases, income to the 200-km. long steel and concrete fence.

With the change of atmosphere, Attar said metaphorically, "the flowers grow prettier."

According to Attar, the Gilboa Regional Council has experienced exponential growth in the real estate market. When prodded for a percentage rate, he responded: "I can't. In some places, like Ramat Zvi, we had not sold a house in the first three years of the intifada. Now in five months, 50 have been purchased. These things have no percentage value."

Yet these are only the first visible signs of an economic recovery, he said while leading a foreign delegation on a tour of what will be a new crossing terminal between Israel and Jenin, due to be completed in September according to the Defense Ministry. Attar expressed his conviction that once built, the terminal will breathe new life into the area.

Jenin is a city of some 30,000, with the northern Samarian hills at its back and the Jezreel Valley spread out before it. Until the summer of 2003, only rich fields stood between the more than 25 suicide bombers that had set out from there since October 2000.

Afula, a city of about 40,000, has not fared as well as its more rural neighbors, said Meron.

Until recently the atmosphere there was grim.

" The city's economy is stagnant, but at least stable," he said. "People are still hurting, but at least now they don't have to worry about being blown up."

Afula suffered a half dozen terrorist attacks in the first 30 months of the violence. Ten people were killed and hundreds wounded. For a time, the central bus station downtown was reduced to a "dead zone," devoid of pedestrian traffic. The last bomber struck on May 19, 2003, at the Ammakim Mall. Weeks later the fence to the north of Jenin was completed, and Afula has not suffered an attack since.

While business is slow, theft is the lowest it has been in a decade. A police spokesman said that vehicle and farm-equipment theft has plummeted, "primarily because there is virtually no way to smuggle the stolen goods back to Palestinian cities."

"With terror, theft, and illegal residency down, and the IDF no longer pushing into Jenin everyday, we can begin to pick up the pieces," Attar said.

All that really matters for Attar, he said, "is that the fence is doing its job and saving lives. With that, I am content."

No, it is not over. Especially if Israel let up now and stops attacking terrorists and their supporters. One of the defining characteristics of the Arab Way of Warfare is their ability to control the tempo of operations. They like to be able to press the infidels as hard as they can. However, if things start to go against them, they always ask for a cease-fire; until they are ready for another round. That has been the pattern all through Arab-Israeli history.

If the intefada stops now, it will only be a matter of time before Hamas and the PA regroup, reload and start tunneling under the fence and firing mortars and rockets over it. If Israel withdraws they will have secure bases to manufacture all the weapons they want and smuggle in more.

It is worth remembering the last time the PLO fully controlled territory, (Lebanon in the 1970's and 80's), they not only sent in suicide terrorists (I was there during the highway massacure of 1978), they also conducted mass cross-border bombardments using a lot of Russian supplied artillery, mortars and rockets.

Israel needs to keep the pressure on. Keep pounding terrorists until there are none left.

Looks like some monster hail will slide just south and west of Ponca City.

Further south, 7am CDT balloon sounding showed over 3000 J/Kg CAPE (along with a warm layer aloft, aka "capping inversion" or just "cap") at Corpus Christi.
CRP would need a temperature near 36C to break the cap. Difficult, but not impossible. However, convergence boundaries, such as the outflow boundary separating the cool winds that blew out of last nights severe storms that travelled from Dallas down to Louisiana from warm air blowing in off the 27C waters of the Gulf of Mexico might help a storm or two "bust" the cap. The "dryline", the line along with which winds converge from the southeast and the southwest, separating hot dry airmasses (like 37C/99F Fort Stockton where the dewpoint is 6C) from warm humid airmasses like at Del Rio, where the air is 32C (90F) but the dewpoint is a muggy 23C. may also serve as a focus/trigger for storm development.

Shear is weak, which generally means the tornado threat is low, but in high CAPE environments, strong updrafts may tap into the low level helicity along such surface boundaries to produce isolated tornadoes.

Saudi Arabia to Consolidate Charities in Anti-Terrorism Step

The new charitable organization would only operate abroad with the permission of the host country and give money to causes recognized by those governments, al-Jubeir said. The entity wouldn't be able to distribute aid in lump sums of cash and would disclose its spending every quarter in audited statements, according to the plan he outlined.

Saudi officials want to ``know where funds go,'' he said.

Stolen propane trucks found near Laredo

12:56 PM CDT on Wednesday, June 2, 2004

Associated Press

LAREDO -- Two propane delivery trucks that were stolen over the weekend have been found near Laredo.

San Antonio television station WOAI reports that San Antonio police and the FBI say the trucks were found Wednesday morning.

There's no word on whether the trucks were still carrying the propane when they were found.

The Webb County sheriff's department and FBI agents in Laredo are processing the discovery.

The FBI had said it was "very, very concerned" about the whereabouts of the trucks.

Agents had cited fear of what might happen if the propane had fallen into the hands of terrorists.

#84 - Actually, they're more concerned about ensuring synergies and efficiencies of consolidation. The Saudis had gotten some good advice from their consultants, who suggested that they'd get more bang for the buck by consolidating their enterprise money in a central pool from which they can better select those individuals and groups that were most worthy of their funding.

In other words, those with the best chances to kill the infidel will get the most money.

BTW, I figure that the Saudis will opt for the UN definition of accounting methods (CRAP - Criminal Recidivistic Accounting Practices), rather than GAAP.

We can only hope the worst is over. Maybe then the Palestinians can start to build a responsible and civil society.

My own view is that isolating the West Bank, too, is actually the most merciful thing that can be done, for the Palestinians. This for two reasons, the first of which is almost too obvious for anyone to notice. It is the removal of a temptation whose effect on Palestinian society has been morally destructive on a colossal scale. When any people are allowed to dream that their problems can be solved by murdering innocents, they lose all judgement.

But the second falls out of this. A Palestine deprived of options to antagonize Israel and externalize all failures must then choose between beggary and enterprise. The Palestinians themselves must eventually confront social, economic, and political problems which, once Israel is disengaged, can no longer be blamed on "the outsider". The West Bank has land as arable as any in Israel, and (after subtracting the Negev desert) no greater population density. What can they do with what they have?

"There is hope for the Palestinians. Look at the Germans and the Japanese today, compared to 1945"

Actually, not much has changed. The Germans love the Arabs and hate Jews and Americans as much as they did before. They still cannot forgive the US for winning WW2. I come from Germany and I can assure you that at least 95% of all Germans supported the Intifada. Nobody is more unpopular in Germany than Bush and Sharon, and nobody is more popular than Saddam Hussein. But the Germans have learned to disguise their pro-Nazi stance by adding some liberal phrases, always showing up as good pupils of the US. Maybe that's why they get away with it so easily compared to the French.

I also believe that once the fence is finished (when already?) If the PLO-Arabs have a choice between beggary and enterprise as you put it, I believe they will opt for continued beggary.

Have you ever wondered why all the "refugee" camps the PLO-Arabs live in are made of concrete instead of cloth tents? It is because the Arabs have their very own UN organization to care for them. The rules for what constitutes a refugee are different between UNRWA and UNHCR. Under UNHCR rules, there would be less than 200,000 refugees while there are almost 4 million under UNRWA.

They receive free rent, food, healthcare, education going the beggar route. If they chose enterprise, they would actually have to work for their survival like the rest of the planet.

No, I'm afraid that the PLO-Arabs are special people that will require special help until they reach their published goal of destroying Israel. That is their only enterprise.

She and the other Winnipeg MP Pat Martin are actually pro-Israel but their party ignores and marginalizes them on this issue especially since Jack Layton became leader. Israel is doing the right thing. It's the only way the Palestinians will learn to be a civilized society.

Personally, I don't care whether or not they become a civilized society. The good thing about the fence, is that it doesn't matter. I don't think the fate of Israeli children should rest on the prospect of palestinians behaving in a humane manner.

The difference between the US occupation of Germany and Japan and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza (Judea and Samaria in the future?) is that the US ia occupying and Israel is withdrawing. D'oh! Without the civilizing Israeli presence Palestinian Arabs are not likely to do well.

"History, it is said, does not repeat itself, or revisits tragedy as farce. This is not so in the Palestinian case, where tragedy has been followed by tragedy. A critical look at modern Palestinian history reveals that the current crisis, driven by the so-called "Al-Aqsa intifada," fits a recurring Palestinian pattern of miscalculation, fratricide, religious radicalism, economic despair, and self-destruction. By comparing the recent violence with Palestinian uprisings in the 1930s and the 1980s, and now, a clear pattern can be discerned. This is the third time in seventy years the Palestinians have orchestrated a nationalist uprising, and the third time it has led them to disaster."

A Palestine deprived of options to antagonize Israel and externalize all failures must then choose between beggary and enterprise. The West Bank has land as arable as any in Israel, and (after subtracting the Negev desert) no greater population density. What can they do with what they have?

And there lies the rub.

We are talking about a people (everywhere in the middle east) who have been culturally deprived of using their own brains, their own intuition and their own gumption to make a go of it. A people with little if any instinct to challenge their leaders and fight for what is the rights of all people. What they are flies in the face of all other people who through thick and thin not to mention the worst possible obstacles, made a go of it.

This is a huge problem of unbelievable proportions when you have societies bereft of democracy and individual rights. Beyond that we are talking about a race of people ruled by evil despots who not only control thought but wealth to the average person. Take a look at all the oil rich countries. It is easy to see the vast wealth is never shared with the masses but controlled by what, just a few tyrannical families? Such an overwhelming sickness so pervasive throughout the entire middle east has a complete chokehold on their population. With this there is no chance in a million years for change.

Then there is the blame game. This is supported not only buy those that rule over these people but by the world at large who so easily are blinded by the whole farce to begin with. To undu that knot alone will take generations. To extinguish this poisonous deep seated behavior in the next 50+ years will take nothing short of a miracle.

What Israel has accomplished in 56 years no other country has ever done in such a short time. Let alone a country with so many hurdles to jump and wars to fight and win. To make that kind of surreal success happen even with flaws and failures takes simple necessary ingredients beyond determination and love of land which is freedom and democracy.

Israel is never going to change the hearts and minds of these animals.

Nor is anyone else. The Palestinians must be left to their own devices. The success and failure of the Palestinians as a people and as a society is their problem, and their problem alone. If their Arab brethen would like to assist them in building a productive society, that's great. But I'm tired of it being Israel's problem.

I also am amazed how so many LGFers the past year were against the fence.

Count me as one of those. The bottom line is that without a dramatic change in the Palestinian leadership, Israel's security problems may be ameliorated in the short term by the security fence, but Israel's security problems could become more acute in the future. Palestinians will eventually attain statehood. That is inevitable. When that happens Katyushka's will likely fall like rain as Palestinians demand the return of the lands usurped by the 'Apartheid Wall'. The Palestinian leadership must be prepared to make peace. Arafat will never do this. Arafat will likely never step down either. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what's gotta happen here.

Also seized in the apartment were various passports, New York State driver's licenses and Social Security cards in their names. Police found more than $17,000 in cash, but it is still unknown exactly how much money is involved or how many victims.

Detectives with the two-month-old Identity Theft Unit believe the couple was funding terrorist activities. Police said they are still unsure if they know the exact identities of the suspects, as they have various aliases.

Now, the real question isn't whether Kerry supports this kind of investigation and methods used to crack the case or whether he opposes it, but whether Kerry can support and oppose this investigation in the same sentence.

OT: Excellent David Warren article on Iraq(from today's Ottawa Citizen).

No one else will say this, so I will. The Bush administration has handled the transfer of power in Iraq more cleverly than anyone expected, including me. The summoning of the U.N. envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi, looked like very bad news (a poisonous old Arab League chauvinist who brokered the sell-out of Lebanon to Syria in 1982). In grim moments, I believed the Bush people were cynically using him to wash their hands of Iraq, and as it were, dump the quagmire back in the swamp of the U.N. Instead, they froze the ground beneath Brahimi's feet, and skated rings around him, haggling behind his back with Iraq's new political heavyweights to leave him endorsing a fait accompli. If it were not vulgar, I would say the Bushies suckered the U.N. into signing on to the New Iraq through Brahimi. A sovereign, free Iraq which will, incidentally, have a few things to say about the U.N.'s $100-billion "oil-for-food" scam, in due course.

They really go overboard on the little fashion description, don't they?

"Hani Aweideh looks like he hasn’t quite grown into his new role as a militia leader. Clean-cut with neatly coiffed hair, pressed beige jeans and a matching polo shirt with embroidered trim around the collar. . . "

Ah, yes, what the well-dressed wanna-be terrorist is wearing! Maybe GQ will do a special on him.

Bradbury's the man!

Here's hoping that he, a real artist, will start giving us some more good stories again? We need that now.

#29 Gordon

It is Gordon who is bitter and unhappy at the moment. This is because he is impatient for my new Crusader movie to come out! Don't worry, Gordon, it's on the way! Ray Bradbury is going to help with the script, and the amazing Taarna, the Tarakian, recommended by Twistarella, has been cast to play a warrior princess from outer space! (We're going to work in a bit of a Sci-Fi angle). Ridley Scott will sob with envy, when he sees how much better it is than his own Crusader epic, and Michael Moore will be so envious he'll write a book entitled something like "Stupid Dead White Crusader Kings, and the even Stupider Psychic Dolphins Who Work for Them", but I'll just laugh, because I'm. . .

Thh security fence was put up for one puepose only:

to stop sucicde bomb attacks. In this it has been eminently successful. The overwhelming majority of Israeli Jews would agree with me on this. A residual benefit of the fence has been to slow down illegal Palestinian immigration into Israel and to prevent car theft. In this too according to the Israeli police the fence is working. I strongly suspect that the majority of the people here who are anti fence are Greater Israel types who believe in throwing the Arabs out. While I would love to see the Arabs go I am realistic enough to know that it will never happen. You should rejoice that the fence is working. Without a fence there would have been hundreds of more dead Israeli Jews blown up by now. Several months ago the IDF captured a Freak who intended on splodeydoping in an Israeli technical training school. Upon interrogation he admitted that he had to make a wide detour in order to get around the fence. This enabled the GSS to finally catch up to him. That is proof positive that the fence is a good idea since its efficeiency has been acknowledged by the enemy. There is now way for the IDF to hermetically seal off the entire border without a fence particualrly in the seam area fronting Netanya and Kfar Saba. As one Israeli minister has put it "where the fence ends is where the terrorists enter."

137 Judith  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 10:07:09am
The bottom line is that without a dramatic change in the Palestinian leadership, Israel's security problems may be ameliorated in the short term by the security fence, but Israel's security problems could become more acute in the future. Palestinians will eventually attain statehood. That is inevitable. When that happens Katyushka's will likely fall like rain as Palestinians demand the return of the lands usurped by the 'Apartheid Wall'.

I 100% agree but I think that will be a good thing. No more pussy footing around poor little refugees. State to state war as equals and if they shoot first, which they will, then Israel will be on the right side of the Geneva conventions and international law.

-Okay, so I am having a delusional day too.

I think that an independent Pali State would not be a disaster from the security point of view of Israel. Any rocket attack coming from their territory can be treated as an act of war leading to massive aerial retaliation including the killing of the Pali leadership. I have faith in the IDF and am not terrorized by the thought of the PLO.

I guess if this were 1919 I would be happy with the Treaty of Versailles because it ended the horror that was WWI. The only problem was that it proved to be seed bed for even greater future horrors. Iraqis fighting American troops are not all terrorists, President George Bush said in an interview today, and he insisted he could understand their distaste for occupation.

This sick excuse is one of the many reasons Israel has next to no one on their side! This is the exact reason there is so much sympathy for the palestinian cause and this is the exact reason terror wins. No wonder almost every living soul on the planet is against the Iraq war.

Another sick excuse for evil. Just watch, this statement will be lapped up by all our enemies like a dog that has not had a drop of water in days. This is nothing more than *validation* for our extermination to our enemies everywhere. Period.

Please remember one simple thing: The fence is far from finished. In fact, the eastern half is simply non-existant.

Most of the above is a fruitless attempt two unite two (or maybe three) separate discussions:

1) Is the Intifada over? (Despite the recent murders in Gaza)

2) Does the fence work? (We can only know that for certain: a/ after the fence is completed b/ if all Palestinians would be on the other side; they won't be under the current plans.)

3) The fence: Arguments (moral and practical) for and against it.

If the intifada is finished, there must be other reasons.

Well, after Gordie gets home from his special classes and the meds are still in effect, he is a wonderful loving little troll, er, boy. But then he gets to playing with his stuffed donkey "Hilly C", his John Kerry & Howard Dean action figures (we had to take the batteries out of li'l Howard, since the scream from the sound chip in it kept scaring the Ferguson's baby two trailers over) he starts getting back into his cranky-baby-moonbat stage again. It always seems to happen after he gets frustrated with trying to get his Kerry action figure to stand up as it is broken at the waist and it keeps flip-flopping back and forth. For the life of me, I can't see why they would have made it with such an out-of-proportion-ally big head! Still, it's pretty cute in its' little Mao jacket. Anyways, he seems to calm down after we put him in his Captain Planet footie jammies and he watches the Care Bears Movie. A cookie and a box of juice and he goes right out. OT: Ray Bradbury Thinks Michael Moore Is an A-hole

Michael Moore stole the title to his fictuous documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" from author Ray Bradbury (picture), who in 1953 wrote his dystopic scifi classic "Fahrenheit 451." So what does Ray Bradbury, now 84 years old, think about Moore using his book title for his Bush-bashing movie project?

The answer is, as journalists in the Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter [link ] found out when they called the author, that he is mighty pissed off. Here's my translation of the juicier bits of the interview.

"Michael Moore is a screwed pooper, that is what I think about that case. He stole my title and changed the numbers without ever asking me for permission.

Have you spoken to him?

Let me wander a bit from my own topic to say I must admit I share the basic disgust of obscene and pornographic pop culture that the Muslims claim is at the root of some of their hatred for us. I just don't hate anybody for it and I don't accept hatred as an acceptable reaction.

Wandering further from my topic, I wish to note that the clothing industry isn't really important to international relaitons, but the movie industry is. There is a particular irony that has struck me here. The film elites have gotten too rich and too thin by belching their filth into Third World neighborhoods, thereby eliciting the hatred from Muslims and others. This is part of the reason we have Marines deployed here and there. The irony is that the movie elites are against American military deployment while at the same time are a big part of the reason for it. In fact, the Marines, which they hate, are the only thing that stands between them and losing their heads.

Is there any doubt the pro pali LLL is disappointed in the slackening off of successful terrorist attacks?

A solid wave of terrorist attacks allows them to rant about the evil "occupation" and "desperation" of the oppressed arabs when the Israelis respond with force.

Come on LLL, admit it! You want there to be more terrorism! Come on Erekat! Come on Europe! Come on Chomsky! You know you love it- deep down in your black hearts!

Realistically, if some insurgents are attacking military targets and NOT civilians, it is difficult to come up with a working definition of the word "terrorist" to include them.

Terrorism is attacking civilian targets to acheive political aims.

I'm gonna side with the president on this one; not every insurgent in Iraq is a "terrorist" (not to say that many surely are, but Bush says this as well).

I think that an independent Pali State would not be a disaster from the security point of view of Israel. Any rocket attack coming from their territory can be treated as an act of war leading to massive aerial retaliation including the killing of the Pali leadership.

Followed by UN resolutions, and eventually an EU embargo, for destroying decades of peace negotiations.

And while I'm at it... what an incredibly long-winded plan. First, fight a war of attrition until they're begging you for mercy. Second, give them 85% of what they've asked for. Third, wait until they're strong enough to attack you. Fourth, wait for them to kill enough of you so you can justify killing the PLO leadership to the Americans.

My question is: why wait?

This is an article re President Bush that highlights his good sense. I would love to see the spin that will be put on this speech on the networks tonight...nah, I don't have to. I already know!

President Bush compared the fight against terrorists to the struggle against tyranny that forced World War II, telling new Air Force officers Wednesday that the United States and its allies can win the battle by bringing freedom and reform to the Middle East.

"Our goal, the goal of this generation, is the same" as it was in World War II, Bush said. "We will secure our nation and defend the peace through the forward march of freedom."

Bush told 981 graduates of the Air Force Academy that they will be joining a war whose central front is Iraq and the broader Middle East.

If Hanoi john were left with this, we would all be dead within a year, G-d forbid, as the f*ing u.n. is his answer to evereything.

With the birth of anything resembling democracy in Iraq, Israel can only be helped. We will have to wait a long time to see a truly democratic Iraq, but at least President Bush has made it possible. He has a vision...Hanoi john has an ego. I rest my case.

Canadian peoples:

We get snow and cold here in Houston, just in moderation

ON DECEMBER 22 1989...HOUSTON RECEIVED 1.7 INCHES OF SNOW WHILE GALVESTON RECEIVED AN INCH; IT WAS THE LAST MEASURABLE SNOW FOR EACH LOCATION

ON DECEMBER 23 1989...COLLEGE STATION HAD A LOW OF 2 DEGREES...HOUSTON HAD A LOW OF 7 DEGREES AND GALVESTON HAD A LOW TEMPERATURE OF 14 DEGREES

Those are Farenheit degrees, btw, 7F is -14C, bitterly cold even by Canadian standards. However, our normal January daytime temps are 59F (15C) and our normal nightime lows in January are 6C

Houston's first warm day (temps greater than 95F / 35C) usually occurs on June 6, but we have already had two warm days this year. In an average summer, Houston has an average of 45 warm days, but all new cars sold in this part of Texas have air conditioning, as do almost all offices and residences. So, unless you park your car in the sun with the windows rolled up, you'd never even notice the heat.

The average high in Seattle in July and August, where Goron lives, is 74.1F, (23.4C), and it rains a lot, meaning odds are good that Gorgon has an unhealthy pallor.

Dear Abby,

I am a crack dealer, living in Beaumont, Texas, and in February of this year, I was diagnosed as a carrier of HIV virus.

My parents live in Ft. Worth and they have recently been arrested for growing and selling marijuana. Without their income, they are financially dependent on my sisters, two of which are prostitutes in Dallas and the other is married to a transvestite in Haltom City.

As far as my two brothers are concerned, one is currently serving a non-parole life sentence for the murder of a teen-age boy in Amarillo back in 1994. My other brother is currently in jail awaiting charges of sexual misconduct with his three step-children.

I have recently become engaged to marry a former drug addict and part-time prostitute who lives in Longview. All things considered, my problem is this; while I love my fiancé and look forward to bringing her into the family, I certainly want to be totally open and honest with her. Should I tell her about my cousin who supports John Kerry for President?

Signed,

You're right. It shouldn't be Israel's problem. Under Oslo (a/k/a the Obscene Failure), each side was supposed to "educate for peace" as part of a "hearts and minds" campaign. The Israelis did just that, teaching its children tolerance for Arabs. The Palestinians did the exact opposite, with UNRWA's active collaboration or, at best, benign (?) inattention.

Only the Arabs can change their own hearts and minds, and they obviously are tribal primitives who are so consumed with shame, rage, hatred and envy that they never will. The only answer, therefore, is unilateral separation and quarantine of the contagion carriers.

Joel #130 -

I agree. I've been in favor of the fence since well before the Israelis decided to build it. There is simply no other viable solution for the foreseeable future.

As long as the fence saves Jewish lives, I don't care about anything else. The Death Cultists have no right to work in Israel, go to hospitals in Israel, attend schools in Israel, or do anything else in Israel.

nothing has changed!

"Organized Arab resistance had collapsed by early 1939," writes historian Charles Smith, "reduced to acts of retribution against other Arabs considered to be traitors."7 Indeed, as Palestinian society deteriorated into a state of lawlessness, some Palestinians used collaboration charges as a way of exacting revenge in old vendettas. Collaboration killings accounted for 494 deaths,8 or about 10 percent of all Palestinians killed during the Arab "revolt."

'The situation deteriorated further as Palestinians recruited young children—below conscription age—to fight for their cause. Youth units, known simply as shabab, were formed to enforce compliance with Husayni's policies and to prevent moderates from "collaborating" with the enemy. Husayni, however, took things a step further in forming "youth troops" fashioned after the Hitler Youth in Germany. As Kimmerling and Migdal point out, "Palestinians had the young, brown- and black-shirted fascists to emulate."9 This disregard for the lives of children was yet another indication of how the first uprising tore at Palestinian society'

A guy identifying himself as a french-canadian (Q) and a english couple were discussing various topics when the english bloke broke into a long-winded diatribe about the US. It was so bad that Q actually started defending the US and attested to that what he said is bullocks as he visits the US often and it isn't what he portrays it to be.

A really great article- Apologies if it has been posted previously.

Making the Case for Israel- By Alan M. Dershowitz
at UC Berkeley

If a space alien from another planet were to come down to earth and land at the General Assembly of the United Nations, or at some American college campuses, or many an urban capital, and have to report back to the distant galaxy from which he came, he'd have to report this is a wonderful planet with great countries that love peace. Like Syria, which is on the Security Council. Or Libya, that chairs the Human Rights Commission. But there's this one country, this evil nation that's been condemned by the UN more than any other country or all other countries combined. If the spaceship landed on the Berkeley campus, all the canards and untruths about Israel--genocide, apartheid, all the claims you hear so often, would be heard. And that's the tragedy.

LOL A very apt analogy.

This is good, too:

Among cases now pending before the International Court, there are no cases pending involving genocide or slavery, or oppression of women. There are no cases of oppression of people because of their religion. There are no cases involving events in Algeria or the Sudan or Rwanda. But Israel builds a moveable fence, a fence that three times already has been moved by order of the Israeli Supreme Court and by the Israeli government in response to changes on the ground, and that seems to be the greatest violation of international law.

I wonder if he got shouted at by those who want The United islamic States of America...

Way OT from Taranto today: "Only in Arkansas"
KPOM-TV in Fort Smith, Ark., reports that Karen Young, from Rogers, is upset after her first grader came home with a toy gun. Young's son told her that his teacher gave it to him.

The gun is shaped like a fish, (???) but "Young says she has strict guidelines at home and wants her children to understand that guns are not toys." Turns out "she accidentally shot her ex boyfriend when the gun she hit him with went off."

I used to live down the road from Rogers. I don't think there are a whole lot of folks like Karen Young in Arkansas.

A psycologist described the situation this way...

The arab mother is denigrated by the husband/father - abused and treated with distain - maybe even hated. To the boy child this situation is confusing. She is also the source of the child's needs and comfort.

So to emulate the father, the boy hates. But his nature is to want succor.

Israel is hated, wanted, and needed in the same manner.

I am deeply sympathetic to certain libertarian ideas, and I retain a framework of though that is, I believe, essentially libertarian. Big L Libertarians, though, are a collection of ad hoc single issue kooks who cannot but alienate ordinary Americans and thus will never have a shot at political viability. After a brief flirtation with the LP during WJC's first term, I re-registered GOP and assumed the role of being part of the legitimate libertarian conscience of a real party.

The LP suffers from the lack of a philosophical foundation, and liberty must be based on principles. How do you weigh the necessity of granting secret wiretap subpoenas to catch murderous mass killers of terrorists versus the real possiblity of intrusion on the privacy of innocents without weighing the right to life and bodily integrity of the citizenry at large, for shorthand, let's say the right not to be crashed into by an airplane in one's office, versus the right to secure communications. LP types, tend to be weak on national security because rather than perform the tough balancing test called for, they go knee jerk toward the narrowly drawn "liberty" argument -- no secret wiretaps under any circumstances, US Govt. must produce classified information to terrorist suspects lawyers in open court, etc.

There is no doubt which way a sincere libertarian should go when he grows up. If they once held a claim to be more open on social issues, the Dems are basically pro-state in every arena, frustrated wanna-be philosopher kings (which is why we need an armed citizenry).

Realistically, if some insurgents are attacking military targets and NOT civilians, it is difficult to come up with a working definition of the word "terrorist" to include them.

Correct, but he made very clear that suicide bombers were only considered terrorists. Since a parallel was drawn concerning 'Occupation' the wider implications of this are well noted by almost all the world and certainly the media. Most certainly in the case of Israel. Even though this statement was made concerning Iraq.

Now let me ask you a question.
How many civilians in Israel were killed by means other than terrorists militants suicide bombers? Two examples out of many...... a convoy of Americans and of course the brutal mafia/nazi style shooting of an 8 month pregnant mother at point blank range and her 4 little children.
Tell me, were these attacks done by terrorists or simply angry people who are fucking sick to death of the brutal Israeli OCCUPATION ? I rest my case.

Words have a very chilling affect on society. These words were not necessary for they came across as an excuse and certainly appeasement. We need not make excuses for those that brutally murder any innocent people in Iraq when we are there giving our lives, our blood and our money to make their lives fruitful and free.

This is why we are in Iraq! We are not there to occupy their land. How in G-d's earth is it possible to send our brave troops to free an oppressed people for the cause of freedom and be considered fucking occupiers anyway? Which btw has developed quite an ugly meaning over the years.

When the entire universe already have made up their minds concerning Israel and the occupation having been served up a steady diet of overtly twisted untrue facts it serves no ones benefit to make statements that people commit these kinds of vicious cold blooded crimes ***because of*** OCCUPATION.

The brothers Weinstein formed their own company, named the Fellowship Adventure Group, to release the film.
Showtime, which has an existing agreement with Lions Gate, landed the U.S. pay-TV rights. A deal is still being worked out for home-video rights, though sources close to negotiations say Universal Home Video looks like the leading candidate, with Lions Gate's own home-entertainment division the darkhorse.

Interesting.

Another good Mark Steyn column

This is One Armchair Warmonger Still Fighting

The bleats of "Include me out!" from the fairweather warriors isn't a sign of their belated moral integrity but of their fundamental unseriousness. Anyone who votes for the troops to go in should be grown-up enough to know that, when they do, a few of them will kill civilians, bomb schools, abuse prisoners. It happens in every war. These aren't stunning surprises, they're inevitable: it might be a bombed mosque or a hospital, a shattered restaurant or a slaughtered wedding party, but it will certainly be something.

Okay, a freaky West Virginia tramp leading a naked Iraqi round on a dog leash with a pair of Victoria's Secret panties on his head and a banana up his butt, maybe that wasn't so inevitable. But, that innovation aside, the aberrations of war have nothing to do with the only question that matters: despite what will happen along the way, is it worth doing?

I say yes. It is already worth it for Iraq. There are more than 8,000 towns and villages in the country. If the much predicted civil war had erupted in any of 'em, you'd see it. Not from the Western press corps holed up with its Ba'ath Party translators at the Palestine Hotel, but from Arab television networks eager to show the country going to hell. They cannot show it you because it isn't happening. The Sunni Triangle is a little under-policed, but even that's not aflame. Moqtada al-Sadr, the Khomeini-Of-The-Week in mid-April, is al-Sadr al-Wiser these days, down to his last two 12-year-old insurgents and unable even to get to the mosque on Friday to deliver his weekly widely-ignored call to arms.

Meanwhile, more and more towns are holding elections and voting in "secular independents and representatives of non-religious parties". I have been trying to persuade my Washington pals to look on Iraq as an exercise in British-style asymmetrical federalism: the Kurdish areas are Scotland, the Shia south is Wales, the Sunni Triangle is Northern Ireland. No need to let the stragglers in one area slow down progress elsewhere. Iraq won't be perfect, but it will be okay - and in much better shape than most of its neighbours.

342 RIP Ford  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 1:28:27pm

Since Shag (ШAГ) means walk, and given your hobby of poking at explosives with knives, I suspect that dropping the Г indicates an emphasis, i.e. run.

447 Dom  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 3:09:14pm

Reaganite,

Hey there! Great to see you back.

I'm in Britain so it's a bit illogical, but welcome home!

It's Wednesday there (#336).

Way OT I was just watching a program called Despatches. Normally it's a boring bog standard news report, but this one was especially stupid, D-Day Despatches, recorded as if it was 1944. No doubt the commissioning staff meant well but there was no consistent line on whether they were wooden actors or wooden journalists, in or out of 1945 character, and the picture continuity was terrible, normal colour pictures from the studio with a sporadic unconvincing grain effect and special film for some of the away reports which contrasted dreadfully with the genuine clips.

Anyway they were reporting US/UK disagreements about the Normandy invasion and various weather issues that would make it tough and what weapons the US was making and where, and three things struck me. First, what they were reporting was uninteresting and anyway nothing like as sensationalist as today's regular journalism including Despatches. Second, there was no way they could have reported even as they did without completely ruining the D-Day operation. The third thing, is that is what's fundamentally wrong with today's war reporting. The sombre fact is, there is no regard whatsoever for the success of operations or the war at large. I found it an oddly chilling broadcast.

w/b reaganite. I am *truly* glad you are back safely.

And now for an update:

Several short-term trolls have been banned. One in particular, our Sad Clown of Moral Equivalency ("His Evasiveness"), is still hanging around, missing the point.

evariste took off for balmier climes, I think, and may post here again.

Colt now has birthdays every single day of every single week, so be sure to wish him his b/d greetings when you see him. He's grown another foot, too, since last you were here, so now none of his pants fit, but that's because he also grew another leg.

I think zulubaby's been spending more time at the beach, because she's even more mellow and relaxed than before. Well, maybe not exactly mellow...

A long-term faux troll (froll), Aisha, has posted some pseudo-Muslimah explanations. You may find them amusing.

There is a tremendous need to be "first" on a post. There is now the Dreaded Post 17, in which The Great Lizard Charles (a) inadvertently revealed the true meaning of "LGF" and then (b) quickly deleted. Only those happy few who were posting at that time got to see the post before it got deleted.

There is only one reason it's taken this long: the greedy ideology that says Israel has to hold on to the entire West Bank. No this doesn't mean I'm blaming the victim etc

I know you're long gone, but I just have to comment. Israel is 9 miles wide in some places, for fuck's sake. It's a third of the size of Lake Michigan. It's a teensy weensy country. People routinely walk across it.

You can call the Israelis stupid or stubborn, but greedy? I don't think so.

Reaganite, #463 RIP Ford,

To be fair, Bigel did comment further up the thread.

Dave Ray, as a Spurs fan you should recognise a losing streak, I'd leave it be. Oscar Wilde shmilde you're talking to Rambo there. Would Oscar Wilde, at his most utterly camp, say oooh look at you lot, handbags at dawn? I don't think so. Think Rambo, mate. Actually better not.

Dave Ray's OK, he's been here a couple of months and he whines a bit, and there's the matter of his footie team but hey, you're American.

I bloody missed the thread where Evariste said goodbye.

At least Reaganite's back.

Reaganite (#485), I know, and you're right. You also have a lot more patience than me. I knocked Dave Ray slightly the other day, and then someone pointed out what a difficult time he has supporting that team. Bigel is useful, asshat. In the same way a sawed-off double-barreled gauge is useful when you lay it on the table when you are talking with an enemy.

A statement of how bad things can get. It ain't pleasant, and sometimes dude goes over the top, but real-world, the hard options are still on the table.

Bigel serves to put the hard options in the conversation. Best you think about them.

If the 'splodeydopes and the EUniks want to fight the Genocide Wars, we can go there.

If they don't, and a fervently pray that they don't, they best decide to change course.

Dave Ray (#531),

Your employer.

You're cool by me. I think you haven't fully appreciated how cool it is to have such a staunch bunch here, and that to most of us Bigel's Sampson option refers to the possibility that nukes rain on Israel as a result of European countries refusing to see beyond their very narrow interests in keeping good with the jihad Arab bloc, but what do I know. Bigel somewhere posted an explanation of his attitude to Europe, and he doesn't feel Europe's moved on from an antisemitic cesspit. We might have a better perspective, and then again we might not, but it's a delicate point. I for one am against going on about nuking anyone, but I got bored saying so, and like I say he's a useful reminder.

548 reaganite  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 4:21:02pm

#542 Dave Ray,

Ever play chicken?

If the other side ups the ante, you best be able to meet it, and raise.

You haven't studied enough military history to understand.

If you let your enemy see that there is anything, anything, you aren't willing to do, they know the cost of victory.

It may be high. It may, indeed, be higher than they are willing to pay, but they know the cost of victory.

That, sir, is how Grant beat Lee.

Lee wasn't willing (nor, most likely able) to pay the cost of beating Grant.

We should make certain our enemies know that the cost of our defeat is far more than they can afford to pay.

EVER.

That, sir, is how we won the Cold War.

If we give the Islamonazis the whip-hand, we will lose. That is a political decision.

It will be made this November.

delusions of nuclear apocalypse, the EU as the Evil Empire, slaughter of millions of people, his obsession with the propagating this theory of his at every opportunity = nutty world view

"Jews being paranoid? Who'd have thought?"

"I pointed out that because he's a Jew he is not Paranoid"

care to explain? perhaps its not just me who has a problem with the English language, eh? On one hand you suggest that my fellow Jews are paranoid and that there was no shock to that statement. Well reaganite, I'm signing off for the night now. I have one good sized shot left in my bottle of fine tequilla (gift from my birthday). I'm going to toss it off now in honor of your return. Good night from the Holy City of Winnipeg, y'all, eh?

584 Thom™  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 4:48:49pm
perhaps I should just give up eh? Let you get back to your welcome home party.

Great idea! Now all you have to do is to wed that thought with an action (or, rather, non-action), and we're done!

On one hand you suggest that my fellow Jews are paranoid and that there was no shock to that statement. On the other you state that Bigel isnt paranoid because of his Judaism.......mmm confusing......

Perhaps you need some sleep, you really have a comprehension problem.

Let you get back to your welcome home party.

Yeah, good idea, you really need the rest. Many was the time watching people like you stay up way past their bedtimes and make total fools of themselves.

You either are an idiot, or the only Brit who doesn't understand sarcasm. Which is it Dave? Either way, I've learned enough about you to not bother any more.

Move along, holmes. We're celebrating the return of one of our friends.

You want to start a fight, come back tomorrow.

I can guarantee you that the Guys and Dolls will still feel froggy (although we won't feel in the least French).

Let us enjoy having our friend back.

#568 Iron Fist,

When I first commented here, you left a comment that to my untrained interfaith multi-culti ears seemed pretty harsh, probably directed at Gordon, I forget. So I called you a **** (sorry) and if it wasn't for zulubaby stepping in with something like 'Boys, boys!' I might have given up on this great site. Misunderstandings abound. I think Dave Ray's on our side.

Dave Ray, definitely save it for when Bigel comes on stronger than that. And look up some of Reaganite's posts on the search facility. You'll get the idea. You don't come here to be loved (nobody loves me), but you can get your point over if you make your bearings clear. You've taken a few potshots at the Americans. Imagine it wasn't the WTC, suppose it's White Hart Lane, you know who did it and you're surrounded by more of them, and a bunch of your Mirror colleagues are restraining you. Tough talk is called for, and here's where it's at. That's how I look at it. When you want to take on a specific comment do it properly. For a while the point was, welcome back. Heh.

LOL, I have been at the beach a bit, not in the sun though, and I'm not sure that's why I'm relaxed :-) Mellow? My mom will be so pleased to hear that.

.....isn't it about time someone dumped a large dose of common sense and sense of perspective on this anti-europe nuclear war fetishist?

Anti-Europe? Are you kidding me? Anti-americanism is the new secular religion in Europe. Do a search on this site for a poster David 'Parisian Insider'. Go see David Kasper's blog. Europe's opiate of the masses is anti-Americanism. We have no illusions about the allies of our enemy.

Intellect. Neville Chamberlain. And our superiorly trained forces are in the process of taking care of it.

Regarding bigel in general: He doesn't trust Europe. He ascribes all of European policy to anti-semitism. While many of us here disagree with him about that premise, few of us would argue about European fecklessness. And make no mistake. bigel has family that, in this time and this place are existentially threatened by anti-semitism in Europe and everyone on this blog who has resources that can be of help has offered whatever we can

Be snide if you wish. It garners you no stature here.

604 Dave Ray  Wed, Jun 2, 2004 10:55:39pm

ah well......true colours are shown......so much for a united front against terrorism eh? Reaganite cant argue a point unless he's winning, Bigel and Iron Fist are better suited to the tin foil hat watch out for the Illuminati militia nutcases, Promethea is the kind of person that blames the EU for funding terror but forgets the US's involvement in training and funding such lovely people as the Mujahadeen and Al Qaida (ps US support for the House of Saud, and its blind eye to their evil supports almost all middle east terrorism), grayp with all his protestation misses the point and doesnt see my snideness is directed at bigel and his like for a reason (the reason being I loathe nutcases who preach nuclear apocalypse), as for making friends on here........is that the point?......I thought the point was discussion.....perhaps I'm wrong, but then again I stick to the real world when I need to make friends.

Dom seems to be the only one that seems balanced here, and yes believe it or not I am on this sites side. I am a conservative. Its dawning on me after reading this thread that this means two completely different things on either side of the pond.

I sent to Israel during the 'good years'.

Israel was bustling, clean, prosperous and positive, but. the Arab sections were often filthy, noisy, poor and run down.

We went up to Jericho, awful. Lots of lazy guys standing around, no women (of course) little work being done, dirty, unkept.

Back to Israel where peopel were busy working and enjoying life.

Its not that the Arabs didn't have oportunity, Israel's a magnet for non-Jewish workers who arrive in their tens of thousands to work.

Its just that the Arabs didn't, couldn't, wouldn't work, prefering to sit in coffee shops being resentful and bitter.

We have the same in the UK, Moslem areas are known for unemployment, crime, Islamism and welfare payments.

Its the 21st century up against the 14th.

Press Release

Significant Increases Over 2003 In Tourist Entries To Israel In The First Four Months of 2004 - From Nearly Every Country

The first four months of 2004 saw significant increases in tourist entries from nearly every designated tourist country - according to an analysis of figures released by the Statistics and Information Department of the Israel Tourism Ministry and Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics.

In the first four months of the year, 433,500 tourists entered Israel - an increase of 86% over the 233,500 tourists during the same period last year, and an increase of 57% over the 275,600 tourists who arrived during the same period in 2002.

611 Geepers  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 2:50:34am

Haven't read all the posts yet, but has anyone heard anything from reaganite?

612 Luigi  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 2:50:51am

Oh, heck, its so good, let's print some more:

From France, 69,200 visitors came during January-April, 96% over the same months in 2003. This figure denotes more tourists from France during this period than during the same period in 2002 as well, with 35,900 visitors, and during this period in 2001, with 47,100 visitors. The number of tourists from France who have arrived so far this year is equal to the number of tourists who came to Israel during the same period in 2000 - which was a record tourism year for Israel, with a total of 77,265 visitors.

From Germany, 21,000 tourists arrived during January-April 2004, 111% more than during the same months last year, and 68% more than during this period in 2002.

The 15,900 tourists who arrived from Russia during January-April 2004 mark an 84% increase in tourist entries over last year during the same period, and a 70% increase over the same period in 2002.

Incoming tourism from the U.S. during the first four months of 2004, with 101,900 visitors, was up 87% over tourism during the same period in 2003, and 60% over the same period in 2002. This figure is nearly the same as the

number of tourists who arrived from the U.S. during the first four months in 2001 (102,100).

613 Luigi  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 3:05:40am

My friend sent this to me. Sorry, no link.

The increase in tourism (above) and this rise in investment is all Wall/Intifadah related. Directly related. This is the real deal. CNN, the Times and the Arabs do not want you to know this. This is the real war:

49% rise in overseas investment in Israel during 1Q04, May 30, 2004

1. $4BN overseas investment in Israel during December 2003-February 2004, THREE TIMES AS MUCH AS THE ENTIRE 2003. $2.5BN during Jan-Feb 2004 (Globes Business Daily, March 30, 2004).
Israeli VC Funds raised $365MN during 1Q04, compared with $118MN during the whole of 2003.

46% RISE in demand for high-tech personnel during 1Q04, compared with 1Q03, fifth month in a row (Ha'aretz, April 13)!

ERNST YOUNG: 49% rise in investment in Israeli startups during 1Q04 ($269MN) over 4Q03.

Israel VC Research Center: Investment in Israel's high-tech during 1Q04 was THE HIGHEST IN 8 QUARTERS (telecommunications, followed by software, life-sciences and Internet.

111 high-tech companies raised $323MN during 1Q04, compared with $211MN raised by 86 companies in 1Q03, and $246MN raised by 96 companies during 4Q03 (Jerusalem Post, May 3).

Iron Fist......where you that bloke on the nuke at the end of Dr Strangelove??

Except that the scenario in Dr. Strangelove did not come true, did it, Dave Ray? The philosophy that Dr. Strangelove mocked and that would supposedly end in nuclezar annihilation did NOT end in nuclear annihilation -- instead, it prevented nuclear war (and the hostile use of nuclear weapons) for over 50 years, helped contain Soviet expansionism, and contributed ultimately to the downfall of the USSR.

Not bad, I'd say.

The real paranoia was not in the strategy, but in the presumption that the strategy was designed and implemented by madmen.

Wars are not won by being nice guys. Wars are won by making the enemy realize that wiping you out (or conquering you) is not worth it.

And the real "kill em all" mentality is among the Islamic extremsits, not among the US or Israel. Not even Bigel.

621 piglet  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 7:01:56am

Just one story before bed:

The Three Billy Goats Gruff
Norway
Once upon a time there were three billy goats, who were to go up to the hillside to make themselves fat, and the name of all three was "Gruff."

On the way up was a bridge over a cascading stream they had to cross; and under the bridge lived a great ugly troll , with eyes as big as saucers, and a nose as long as a poker.

So first of all came the youngest Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

"Trip, trap, trip, trap! " went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll .

"Oh, it is only I, the tiniest Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, with such a small voice.

"Now, I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! pray don't take me. I'm too little, that I am," said the billy goat. "Wait a bit till the second Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Well, be off with you," said the troll.

A little while after came the second Billy Goat Gruff to cross the bridge.

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap, went the bridge.

"Who's that tripping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"Oh, it's the second Billy Goat Gruff , and I'm going up to the hillside to make myself fat," said the billy goat, who hadn't such a small voice.

"Now I'm coming to gobble you up," said the troll.

"Oh, no! Don't take me. Wait a little till the big Billy Goat Gruff comes. He's much bigger."

"Very well! Be off with you," said the troll.

But just then up came the big Billy Goat Gruff .

Trip, trap, trip, trap, trip, trap! went the bridge, for the billy goat was so heavy that the bridge creaked and groaned under him.

"Who's that tramping over my bridge?" roared the troll.

"It's I! The big Billy Goat Gruff ," said the billy goat, who had an ugly hoarse voice of his own.

"Now I 'm coming to gobble you up," roared the troll.

Well, come along! I've got two spears,
And I'll poke your eyeballs out at your ears;
I've got besides two curling-stones,
And I'll crush you to bits, body and bones.

That was what the big billy goat said. And then he flew at the troll, and poked his eyes out with his horns, and crushed him to bits, body and bones, and tossed him out into the cascade, and after that he went up to the hillside. There the billy goats got so fat they were scarcely able to walk home again. And if the fat hasn't fallen off them, why, they're still fat; and so,

Snip, snap, snout.
This tale's told out.

And here's a bit more about trows, as trolls are called in Orkney.

Here is an account of some encounters with trolls.

But in Shetland, GAZE has the opposite effect of that desired on LGF. It forces trolls to stay!

One such account, recorded in Shetland, explains that upon meeting a trow if the mortal met the trow's gaze and refused to look away, the creature would be unable to escape.
623 Psychobarb  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 8:25:42am

My two sense:

I'm not sure it's over; the world still accommodates to the deaths of Jews, it's just that the Islamofascists are killing everybody else now, so people are angry.

The only reason terror is down is because the Israelis are killing leaders everyday and Egypt is beginning to put the squeeze on Arafat. That at least, and Jordan's possible involvement, at good developments.

But even though Egypt insists Arafat goes, he'll be lauded as a legitimate leader by the EU, UN and various heads of state as he deplanes in the France or South Africa.

But I do know from friends living in the UAE, that people there are REAL nervous about Saudi terror spilling over. Nervous but they won't admit that years of repressive governments and using Israel and the US as whipping boys has been a failure and needs to stop.

No, I agree with one blogger that only total defeat and 50 years will truly change the situation. We will be dealing with this for the rest of our lives but, G-dfwillingly, for our children, it should be better.

624 Ceci  Thu, Jun 3, 2004 3:16:50pm

General Sharon and Israel win another round! When will the Islamofascists ever learn?
