Interesting information about one of the Democrats’ rising stars, who is apparently an unreconstructed Marxist with a slick surface: Obama Truth Squad. (Hat tip: M. Simon.)

May I quote noted conservative Andrew Sullivan?

Obama is the Democrats' hope. Heck, he is the hope for all of us.

So there.

I came up with a new slogan tonight over at Misha's blog:

"It Takes A Kerry to Raze a Village"

N. O'Brain
Imperial Minister for Useless Information

Pheh, I can't believe people were getting "excited" over this guy's "future chances".

First of all, no one named "Obama" is gonna get elected on a national level for about 40 years.

Even if it weren't for the "Osama" rhyming scheme he's got, his last name doesn't help. His whole name makes him sound like he should be running the UN or some 3rd world stinkhole* with a name like that. It's almost as bad as Idi Amin.

I can see it now, DATELINE, USSA, 2020:

His Excellency President for Life Field Marshal Obama Barrack, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea announced today that he had eaten Secretary of Defense Barbara Boxer and had pronounced her 'delicious'

*redundant, I know.

Hmm the name "Obama" keeps reminding me of someone else, but I can't remember what it is . . .

This guy annoys me to no end. The press just adores him because of all his accomplishments like - um . . . oh right, he' a state senator! And his original parents were poor! Give him a medal.

Would a white 42 year old state senator be giving the Dem's keynote address?

13 j-damn  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 5:54:46pm

Shiny Happy People?

That's fitting...that's when R.E.M. really started to suck.

Dem conventions always remind me of PBS pledge drives:

"Hey everyone, look, it's all your favorite old tired leftist dirtbags! We'll get right back to our presentation of WOODSTOCK right after this word from Peter Yarrow. Don't forget, a 5,000 contribution gets you this neat DNC totebag!"

14 Jack Burton  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 5:54:54pm

I don't have the time to read all of that, but what's wrong with him? Compared to the scum of the democrat ticket, he seems like a minor satan.

15 Zooty Zoot  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 5:57:47pm

Barack Obama came to speak to a small group of my colleagues about seven weeks ago, on the day that Jack Ryan officially dropped out of the race. He began his speech by taking aim at everything wrong with the Bush administration and the very first words out of his mouth were: "whether it's John Ashcroft singling out Arab Americans or contracts for Halliburton, I'm against it."

We are engaged in a life and death struggle against millions of Islamic crazies right now, and the very first thing this guy has to complain about is Arab Americans being singled out. It's all code. That's his way of letting us know that, when the chips are down, he'll be soft on terror and soft on national defense.

He likes to say things like, "Don't get me wrong, we have real enemies out there," but that's just a bone he likes to throw to the centrists. He doesn't mean it.

16 Lady of Shalott (ylreveb)  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 6:00:14pm

What's an unreconstructed Marxist?

Is that the same as a Paleo-Marxist? For example, (holding back the vomit), Ted Kennedy?

Would a deconstructed Marxist be a dead Marxist which, of course, is the only good Marxist?

If I practice one-liners wearing shoe polish for eyebrows and a mustache, does that make me a Groucho-Marxist?

If I place Sharpies up my nose and ears and rub my head along the wall does that leave Allota-Marxist?

It's getting late. Sorry for the brainfarts.

John Edwards pride of the little man. Drives Doctors out of business with excessive malpractice cases. Causes huge rate increases so poor people can't afford insurance.

Plans to have government pick up the tab for people to get insurance so that trial lawyers can steal even more.

It's the Great Black Hope syndrome. Colin Powell refused to cooperate with the media's Presidential script for him, so now guilt-ridden upper middle class whites have glommed onto this guy to redeem their souls. Boring and predictable.

Just last night Chris Matthews was complaining how disappointed he was in Powell's career. Only Secretary of State, tsk tsk, what a failure.

26 Beagle  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 6:19:04pm

Other than totally nationalizing health care, what's left for Marxists? I guess we could nationalize every industry, get rid of private property, and shoot all enemies of the state, but Obama's going nowhere if he proposes any of those.

27 Canuckistan  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 6:19:29pm

Hey, smear Obama if you want (or ATTEMPT to smear him) but tell me, why is it that the best competition the Rethugs could come up with was a guy who tried to force his wife to have public sex?

And did you read that "Truth Squad" page? Man, if that's all the dirt you can find on Obama, you guys must be desperate.

28 evariste  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 6:24:02pm

It finally started resolving for me, but I had to turn off their stylesheet to be able to read it. Black text on dark red? Shee.
For Sol Roth: Reconstruction: The period where the Feds were really mean to Southerners after the War Between The States, because the South lost.
Unreconstructed: anyone that would not accomodate themselves to the new realities of postbellum America. Crusty old codgers still fightint their little guerilla wars, lynching blacks, etc etc.
Unreconstructed Marxist: One that won't accomodate himself to the post-Cold-War realities of the dirty Commies having lost.

I have to agree. After Jack Ryan helped the Soviet sub captain defect, and battled Colombian drug lords, Irish terrorists, Palestinian nuclear bombers, helped stop the Red Invasion of Europe and battled the Japanese, I was shocked that 1) he dumped Anne Archer and 2) he went for a Borg chick.

It was such a let-down for me.

30 goldsmith  Wed, Jul 28, 2004 6:27:03pm

Something bothers me about the tone of some of the praise being directed at Obama. Mr Obama's record may justify the positive attention he is receiving, but some of the excitement about him seems to have the subtext that he deserves plaudits because he is black; sort of the same enthusiasm a parent has for a child who just sang terribly at a recital or the 'everyone is a winner' attitude of a special education teacher.

Maybe I'm just reading into it, I don't know, but I am aggressive about true equality. I hope that Obama travels far on his merits should he have them, not because of the melanin content of his skin or because he grew up poor.

Barack Obama wins Democratic nomination in 2012. Al Gore attempts to accept the nomination and is escorted back to the little short bus by the nice men in the white suits. Obamamama names Hillary Clinton as running mate. She declines, but her husband Bill, like Gore, tries to accept the VP slot. Close advisor Robert "Kleagle" Byrd exhumed for the event. ABC news anchor Comical Ali interviews Michael Moore who claims new evidence that Bush lied and took us to war in Korea in 1950.

Winnipeg, home to plow-pulling Uke baba's at the start of the prior century. We have a woman at work who dates somebody from around there and her car cost more than that guys house.

She's dating a penniless guy? That can be explained by the fact that Winnipeg men have enormous schlongs. In fact, the average schlong length in Wpg is 12 to 13 inches. Researches are not sure why, but they suspect it has something to do with the annual mosquito infestations & malathion fogging, combined with intense cold in winter, along with the fact that Wpg is the Slurpee consumption capital of North America.

Jack Ryan is playing coy. While he has announced that he is withdrawing from the race, he still hasn't removed his name from the ballot. The Illinois Republicans can't put up a new name (who? I think they are cold calling everyone in the phonebook A to Z) until Ryan officially withdraws. He has said that he would re-enter the race if the public demands it. Right.

Rumor has it that Charles has an excellent spy network.

As a Canadian who has been avoiding all of the news stations this past week due to the non-stop democratic convention I was unaware of this person until yesterday when I saw a long blurb on CNN about him and I immediately was concerned by his name even before I understood his politics.

They kept repeating over and over that he has lots of charisma, yet, I couldnt quite feel it...

Unfortunately you are not cleared for that information. I can inform you however, as an aside, that it is safe to come to your own conclusion.

The sad thing is that the Dhimmicrats already have a rising star - his name is Harold Ford and he's the guy who challenged Pelosi for the position of the Minority Speaker. He's easily the smartest guy on the Dhimmi side of the isle, so the party dinosaurs keep parading Al Sharpton and Obama Barracka instead.
I feel sorry for Ford: on the Dhimmi side the most he can achieve is to be the guy who brings the black vote - nothing to sneeze at, but way below his potential. If he switches to the Republican party he'll become the darling of the party, but he'll lose the ability to bring the black vote. Too bad, because I'd really like a guy of his caliber to get a shot at the biggest job.

Is that what I said? Don't bother re-reading what I wrote, because I see you have taken the great liberal short-cut to thinking: just shout racism.

The man is a great orator and he appears to have some of you runnign scared. Too bad, so sad

"Too bad, so sad"--such intellectuallism. Perhaps that should be the new motto of the Democratic Party.

"Kerry/Edwards...too bad, so sad!"

You're a 38 year-old and you actually use the phrase "Too bad, so sad". The RCMP was now be including "must have the mental capacity of a boiled potato" on it's entrance forms.

Hitler and Clinton were "great orator(s)" too*. Does that mean I should've agreed with their politics?

I've never seen you around here before

Re #1:
Back to Sullivan: He quoted Obama's words about values and commitment, saying it was "Burke in a sentence", with no reference to what sort of values Obama was committing to. Thatw ould seem to me to be the central point, not just the commitment. What is it with Sullivan? He seems to be more all over the place than usual, and falls for every line they toss out.
Two questions: Does he ever have an original thought?
How long does he think before he posts an opinion?

You ask, "would a deconstructed Marxist be a dead Marxist which, of course, is the only good Marxist?"

A good question, but then we'd be speaking of a necro-paleo-Marxist ;) Which is still a good Marxist...

if you didn't have a problem with his name (and by implication his ethnicity), what exactly WERE you saying?

117 rastajenk  Thu, Jul 29, 2004 5:35:54am

The real question regarding Obama's future as a star of the party is, will he be co-opted by the Clinton Machine, or will he be a rival to the Clinton Machine, or will he just wait it out until the Clinton Machine has completely run its course...which may be a while.

The Clintons have their hands all over this convention, and none of what they're doing is helping Kerry one bit. More than ever it looks like Kerry is set up to fail, so that they can return in '08 to save the day, or at least save their place in history.

118 Occasional Reader  Thu, Jul 29, 2004 5:51:42am

Gotta say, after a (non-exhaustive) review of the "Truth Squad" site, I'm having a little trouble finding evidence that Obama is an "unreconstructed Marxist". Okay, so he mutters against NAFTA, but so does Lou Dobbs. That doesn't really qualify as "Marxism".

119 Geepers  Thu, Jul 29, 2004 5:52:01am

120 scott in east bay  Thu, Jul 29, 2004 6:10:53am

Dems are grasping at straws in Obama. He is the "great black hope" of the party. He has what experience other than state senate? Now, he is going to the US Senate by default. The black caucus will co-opt him ASAP and he will just another "whitey owes us" voice. Yawn. You had to have caught the two dead giveaways in his speech: "our votes count, most of the time", and the poor Arab family being led away to the camps, or whatever. Can you say "agenda"? The real shame here is that the Dems have to round up these faux "black" candidates who have origins outside the US to find any decent candidates to push. Powell is NOT liked by the mainstream Dem blacks because he refuses to play the race card. (Perhaps he feels that being Army Chief of Staff, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, National Security Advisor, combat commander, and Sec of State to pretty much stand on their own) Obama is worse. Half African, half white, raised in Hawaii. Oh, the heritage, the heritage.

Similarly, Andrea Mitchell, Monday night at DNC with Chris Matthews, anticipating Clinton's speech and opining about what he'd done since leaving office, said that he had spent the past 8 months in Chappaquiddick writing his memoirs. Matthews quickly picked up on it and corrected her (she was embarrassed, laughing and shaking her head!)

#123 Occasional Reader: I take it back - it's not a smear site, at least not in a personal way. It paints Obama in the worst possible light, but in a political sense. I don't know enough about the details of the rather intricate links to byzantine Illinois politics to say if it is politically unfair.

My comment about Charles stands though.

I heard this song and dance before about Edwards. True the American dream is to come from humble origins and obtain great success, but it does matter how that success is obtained, and it does not insulate a person from all criticism. For example, Al Capone lived the American dream of a sort.

Gordon 7/29/2004 08:51AM PST

The USA doesn't need to have elections and campaigns Gordon can just tell us who the president will be.

Obama is the Dems answer to the increasingly nagging question, "If the Dems are the only party for the Black man why are all of the most important Black politicians Republicans (Powell, Rice, Thomas). Obama's hype is a DNC/Media creation. Obama has the exact same poltics as Jesse Jackson, but by the Dems' calculus Obama is more appealing because he's light skinned and distinguished looking like Powell, and He doesn't sound like a some store front preacher or have baggage like Jackson or Sharpton. He is also Harvard educated, which is impressive. Basically the DNC had to go out and recruit their own Colin Powell. I take it to be a tad cynical.

For all the lefties carping about other people joking about Obama's name even Obama himself acknowledges that his name could be an impediment. Think about the 40's if a pol had a name like Rudoldp Hibler.

133 M. Simon  Thu, Jul 29, 2004 12:50:17pm

Gordon,

I am quite familiar with Illinois' byzantine politics.

The site is quite fair to Obama.

So far they haven't mentioned the similarty of his politics to Carol M. Braun's who was a one termer exactly because she was as far left as Obama. Needless to say - in a liberal state Obama is a far left liberal. Not quite up to San Francisco standards but close.

I think it is quite fair to see what reputable sources have to say about Obama and his record.

I don't know if he has changed his own [Link: www...] since two months ago but then Obama was a moveon/answer kind of anti war guy with a punish business hard attitude.

It appears by his speech that he has at least for the speech softened his positions. Kind of like what his boss Kerry likes to do. With all the fawning going on Charles thought it might be good to get a second opinion.

I agree.

I'm saying his name sounds a heck of a lot like Idi Amin's, okay asshole? Why don't you Google the fucking phrase in said post if you're so fuckin' smart.

I don't care if the guy is purple. This country is, bottom line, very superficial. I mean, look at John Kerry--he chose his RUNNING MATE based on superficial looks. This nation won't even elect a man with FIVE O'CLOCK SHADOW for Cliff's sake.

So if you think this nation would elect someone whose name not only sounds like OSAMA but also like that of the leader of various 3rd world crapholes then you're living in a fantasy world.

I'm so sick to death of the god-damned liberal habit of smearing everyone as a racist..it's the modern equivalent of shouting "WITCH" and waiting for the Puritan mob--I for one am not going to be pressed to death and let my bones wait around for Arthur Miller to write me a play.
