SF Man Fakes Beheading Video

Sat, Aug 7, 2004 at 7:22:37 am PDT

It’s bad enough that the mujahideen really are hacking the heads off their hostages.

But then we have loathsome little American freaks like Benjamin Vanderford who fake beheading videos as a publicity stunt—and this guy was running for office in San Francisco: American Not Sorry for Beheading Hoax.

SAN FRANCISCO —A video aired Saturday that purportedly showed an American being decapitated in Iraq was a hoax.

The man shown in the video, reached by The Associated Press in San Francisco, said he videotaped the staged beheading at his friend’s house using fake blood.

Benjamin Vanderford, 22, said he began distributing the video on the Internet months ago in hopes of drawing attention to his one-time campaign for city supervisor. When his political aspirations waned, he thought the video would serve as social commentary.

“It was part of a stunt, but no one noticed it up until now,” Vanderford said. “I did this for a couple of reasons. One is to attract attention. But two is to just make a statement on these type of videos and how easily they can be faked.”

What an incredibly foul thing to do.

As Beagle and I were discussing on the earlier thread, it sure took in the mainstream media, at least for a while.

I wonder if any jihadi websites got snookered...

You can live in San Francisco as long as you check your morals (and sanity) at the door.

Of course, should anyone produce a fake video of the hanging of an imam the whole media circus would yell with a thunder voice against such a violent and racist thing.

"We need to leave this country alone. We need to stop this occupation," he said on the video, adding that he had been offered for exchange with prisoners in Iraq. "Everyone's going to be killed this way."

I get it. They think ALL of Iraq is Al-Q suicide bombers and beheaders who just want to be left alone. We go away and they won't have anyone to bomb, kidnap, or behead. They'll probably stop blowing up churches and synagogues, too. (No, wait... they don't even allow synagogues over there, do they?)

What the LLLs and MMMs do NOT get is that Iraqi regular folks want FREEDOM and prosperity and are glad to see guys like my cousins. We are not occupiers, there to take over and impose our Western way of life.

A hypothetical parallel is the Feds coming to Podunk, Alabama, in around 1904, to free black people from the terrorists known as the KKK.

SF Chronicle: Albany Muslims fear backlash after mosque arrests

"People used to live next to us and not think who we were, what religion we were," said Ahmad, and shook his head. "Now, they are going to think: 'Oh these Muslims, what are they doing to do to us?' "

Isn't that horrible? Americans are such bigots!

"The government wants to try to make Americans believe that Muslims are terrorists, but those who are smart will not buy into this," said Marlon, a construction worker from Iraq who ate a breakfast of cheese, honey and flatbread at Ahmad's store Friday.

So far, Ahmad said, non-Muslim residents of this ethnically and religiously diverse city of 95,000 people have not bothered him or any of his friends. Acts of vandalism against the nondescript mosque, which some had feared, have not occurred.

Hey! Loose lips sink ships.

... if the dirt bag brings the discussion back to "Where did you say they lived?" the BEST.PRANK.EVER is already in motion. All there is left to do is finish your beer, have a good night's sleep, and wait for hilarity - career criminal, expecting a simple robbery of an empty home, makes entry and soon finds the homeowner is still home, who will be the better armed???

I'd like to second (or third or fourth) all those that call this creep a total ass. It still amazes me that there are these people, still with heads attached, who have no clue when it comes to the barbarity of "ritual" beheadings in Islam. That anyone would find this attractive as "part of a stunt" is disgusting. That he would do this "to attract attention" really says it all. He must must have failed kindergarten, and been horribly emotionally scarred for life. Probably didn't share his crayons, either.

That this clown is 22 years old, and thinks it is a good thing to show "these type of videos and how easily they can be faked," reflects so poorly on his parents and our education system that it saddens me deeply. Competely amoral.

# 17 papijoe:

I wouldn't mind the media attention if the media unilaterally condemned such grotesque behavior. But, since journalism students have to pass a senior course in "Grotesque Story Reporting, And How To Spin Them Into The Neo-Con Conspiracy," I cannot hold out any hope of such condemnation occurring. More likely as not, the reporters laughed as well, having passed said senior course. That shows they are kindred spirits with this amoral ass.

He said he understood if relatives of those killed in Iraq thought his stunt was misguided, but he offered no apologies for the hoax.

Really sums up this degenerate succinctly.

I didn't like the climate in San Francisco. Well, obviously the city is full of LLL's, but I mean the actual climate. I heard people refer to San Francisco as having a Mediteranean climate, but is there anyplace in Greece or Italy where it is about 50F/10C at midnight with a stuff wind blowing in clammy ocean air in July?

I didn't think so.

I don't mind cold, if it is balanced with warm. Upstate New York, for example. Normally about -10C/low teens F, with some nights much colder in January, but loads of sunny mid 80s (30C) days in the summer.

I just remember being cold a lot there. And the women in bars didn't seem fond of servicemen. (You could tell in the 1980s, the "SAT" Navy haircut was not in style).

As cold as the weather gets in Maryland in the winter, I could not deal with the cold summer days of San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest.

And the women in bars didn't seem fond of servicemen.

Er, what about the servicewomen?

80 Frank IBC  Sat, Aug 7, 2004 7:35:31am

I remember a friend from LA visiting - he observed that the summer daytime high temperatures are about the same in both cities, but in the East, the temperature does not drop sharply at night as it does in LA.

I remember the day it got up to 105 deg F here - at 11:30 p.m., it was a cool and refreshing 90 deg F. Washington DC's record "low high" (highest minimum temperature ever recorded) was 84 degrees, back in the summer of 1980.

Dewpoints were in the mid-70s F earlier this week. When it's that humid, you take a shower, get dressed, walk to your car, but by the time you pull out of the driveway, you feel dirty again. Thankfully, the humidity has dropped substantially - I can actually see the blue sky - haven't seen it in several weeks.

83 Buck  Sat, Aug 7, 2004 8:17:14am

OK, the beheading can be faked. We know the prisoner abuse can be faked (the porn website, and british example). Everything can be faked... So what?

Did anyone argue that they can't?

What does it mean? Does he know that the people in the video really are dead? Berg, Stern, and so on are really dead. Does he think they just died of natural causes, and then a video was produced?

Perhaps he doesn't believe the killers had the stomach for the real thing?

I don't get it?

84 classy freddy blassy  Sat, Aug 7, 2004 8:19:05am

The persistent cool, blustery and wet winds in SF serve a vital purpose--it picks up the pollutants, sleaze and human waste byproducts and dumps it across the Bay, mostly on UC Berkeley professors and students. On those rare hot and still days, the City smells horrific.

As far as the quality of most SF women found in bars, there is a reason why the local sports arena/convention complex is called the Cow Palace.

Actually, Eric Boucher-Biafra was soundly defeated by *puke* Dianne *ackckck!* Feinstein who had to face a a tie-breaking showdown with Quentin "The Kosher Kowboy" Copp, that year.
If nothing else, San 'Ferisco' handily marginalizes its significance to rest of the world with its (sadly) comical electorial antics.

Never underestimate the ability of the LLL to underestimate the depravity of America's (and civilization in general) enemies.

This story is a perfect example of both:

1- what liberals wrongly think thay have to teach us about morality, and

2- what is typically immoral about liberals.

"It was part of a stunt, but no one noticed it up until now," Vanderford said. "I did this for a couple of reasons. One is to attract attention. But two is to just make a statement on these type of videos and how

I'm sure Daniel Pearl and Nick Berg's families are glad you pointed that out. And since it's so easy to fake such a video, maybe we shouldn't pay attention to them at all. We should ignore these videos and the videos of Saddam's henchmen throwing people from rooftops. We should ignore the film footage of the concentration camps during Hitler's little love fest. Hey, photos can be faked too! Lets ignore the photos taken at Abu Ghraib - both before and after coalition forces took control. In fact, almost anything can be faked...let's just ignore it
all. How about the video footage and the photos of 9/11? Should we ignore that? Oh yeah, we don't have to, people like you, writhing in denial, have all but banned those images from public view. After all, it could be a hoax. Or worse, the president could have planned it...or knew about it and did nothing so he could have reason to go to war and enrich Cheney through contracts given to Haliburton. It was all some magical
f&cking conspiracy...

Unbelievable.

If I was Nick Berg's son, I'd fly to San Francisco and knock on Vanderford's door and punch him square on the nose. Simple-minded people sometimes deserve simple-minded responses.

I was under the impression, caught the tail end of the news story, that this had been done months ago. So, I was thinking he did it before the iraq videos of Zarqawi's work.
Next thing I thought was why not flood the net with fakes and ripoffs(spoofs) of jihadi recruitment films. Maybe get the internet savvy jihadis thinking since fake or real aren't distiguishable, why bother with the beheadings. Even if this guy was a schmuck, hopefully it inspires a little psyops from patriots worldwide.
Just looking for the silver lining in this!

Yes, one can fake cude video, cgi or oldschool fake film,
but one cannot fake,

the destruction of two 110 story towers and surrounding buildings, or the disappearence of 11 million people, leaving behind their empty houses (soon taken by their jealous neighbors) thousands coats and furs (soon given to german's during ww2, sometimes still stained with blood or with bullet holes.

That's precisely my point. When one starts to trivialize things like the beheading videos, torture and mass murder, the holocaust, 9/11, prisoner abuse it serves to lessen the sting we feel when we remember - and the sting of these events should be remembered. It also serves to to confuse the political discourse and weaken our resolve.

This Benji Vanderford does as much good for our troops as do the intellectual midgets that spout the "Bush Knew" conspiracy and all of that other flat-earth drivel. The scariest part of this is that I know people who believe all these wild theories and tell it with a straight face that Michael Moore has a point, or that McKinney has a point, or that Gore has a point, or that Dean has a point...and they're serious. And for all the looking I've been doing, the only point I can find is always in the same place - on the top of their heads.

And quite frankly, I'm sick of it. These people (including John Kerry) make life harder and more dangerous for our troops by trivializing the seriousness of this war and spreading such blatant propaganda against the president that can only serve to undermine him abroad and whip the world in an anti-American nod fest. And they ultimately will make us less safe on our own soil. Not to mention the complete disrailing of any logical, rational train of thought on the part of the media or any other players in this festival of the absurd.

This is what happens when you let a bunch of hippies run the country for eight years...half the country, standing barefoot in their yard, staring at trees and pretending that life can be a walk in the park without ever learning how to walk.

"What an incredibly foul thing to do."

I could not disagree with you more. I think this exposed Al Jazeera and a few other Arab networks as active participants in the campaign of terror against civilians and the coalition in Iraq and elsewhere.

This video was not verified, and the fact that it was an apparent beheading of an American, and he made anti-war statements beforehand was too much for the Arab networks to pass up.

They have been exposed. And now Al Jazeera is not only furiously backtracking on this, and the decision of the Iraqi government to ban them for 30 days.

Now if only they could force the jihadi reporting allstar Mansur out of Fallujah. Then Al Jazeera would have to rely almost fully on unverified reports.

These are all the facts I could find in that article:

The tape showed a hand with a knife cutting at the motionless man's neck, but did not show any militants.

This tells me nothing. Other beheading videos would not have been easily faked for several disgusting reasons. I sense media complicity in this. Of course, earlier I thought an old plot might have finally activated. But I suspect nobody really looked at the tape.

The media has lost all credibility. In the rush to be first, nobody fact-checks. Nobody. At least the blogosphere talks about it and considers the options. A nice hazy view is good when you don't know the facts. We are media consumers, always engaged in the process of trying to spin their product to where it makes sense. Isn't that their job?

If an outlet tells me someone was beheaded I assume they saw someone beheaded.

What I find rather humorous and disturbing at the same time is that this nimrod lets himself be photographed by the press while in his boxers! Is he having a hard time finding a date on Castro, thinking that this will improve his chances?

Another example of how the members of the LLL have no morals.

FBI investigates

The FBI (news - web sites) questioned Benjamin Vanderford, 22, shortly after the hoax became public. "We will pursue any and all legal avenues for prosecution," said FBI special agent LaRae Quy of the bureau's San Francisco office. "At this point the matter is still under investigation."

Don't worry family of Nick Berg, Paul Johnson, since brave Mr Vanderford has proven how easy it is to fake the holy gang-murder of a civilian, I'm sure it'll only be a matter of time before your son and husband and father with come skipping home. What a f**king ghoul.

115 DANEgerus  Sat, Aug 7, 2004 8:21:39pm

My old flight instructor stressed that in an emergency you need to 'fly the plane into the ground' meaning you keep flying... until you can't. You will either arrive at the scene of the crash... or there won't be one.

My point is that it is better to try... to hope...

Terrorists select victims at random... specifically women and children for 'impact'. If they targeted military installations they would be 'militants' or 'guerillas' but it doesn't instill 'terror' in your victims to go after military targets and children can't defend themselves so aiming at civilians is a particularly foul methodology.

This gentlemen thinks we can just 'run away' and the problem no longer exists. He is quite willing to let other people's children die so he can achieve his self-indulgent delusional 'morality'.

If he was actually in danger and willing to accept that risk I wouldn't be so critical.

But we can't arrange for terrorists to target the deserving.

So he wants others to die... so he can 'feeeeeeeeel' superior to you...

and his balls just aren't within range of the arc of my foot.

Iriee (#116),

There was a guy that used to do that all the time (the portable confessional and many others). That was his intent and it's easy as hell.

This jerk off wanted attention and did something that was creepy in a ghoulish way and disrespectful to the seriousness of these types of murder on film crimes.

The fact the the press "fell" for it is a side effect of a media that can't fact check their own lunch reservation doesn't mean he deserves any kudos. Save those for the next time he makes a fool of the press.

The fact the the press "fell" for it is a side effect of a media that can't fact check their own lunch reservation doesn't mean he deserves any kudos.

Exactly. What Iriee points out is correct -- the media have become incredibly sloppy, there's no integrity left -- but you're correct in that this guy does not deserve any kudos for this sickening "prank" that he pulled. I think the whole thing is disgusting. After the Jayson Blair fiasco, is there anyone who takes the media seriously? And let me add, because I haven't said it yet today, I hate the media.

120 Roger  Mon, Aug 9, 2004 7:48:43am

This weekend, I spent about two hours talking with Nick Berg's best friend; we were talking tech stuff and about the email handler related to the foundation started because of Nick Berg's death. We did not talk specifically of Berg or how he died. His friend simply describes it as "we had a death in Iraq". The pain in his eyes tell me emphatically that Nick is dead.

It makes me want to fascilitate the opportunity to punch Benjamin Vanderford's lights out; he's such an uncompassionate beast. Vanderford's only passion is his sick sociopathic idealogy.
