We Got Mail!

Fri, Aug 13, 2004 at 3:53:48 pm PDT

I just received the following email from a helpful visitor to LGF:

Hello,

Sorry but you are wrong about what the Iraq war was.
It was wrong and not right. Just thought you should
know,

And it was signed with a link to a blog that has really opened my eyes to the incredibul dissimulation happening on some web sights: The Iraq War Was Wrong Blog.

(“My Taxonomy” had me laughing so hard the neighbor’s dog started barking...)

No way this is serious...for God's sake-they listen to Hanson. A dead giveaway that this is some kind of Friday the 13th prank by one of the regulars.

OK

How in the hell do you expect to get

This is a parody.

There is a link to "Retardo Montalban" Now that is awesome!

I agree - this must be a joke:

You've got to be kidding.

Of course, in my own blog, I do take more care to create lovingly posts with (avec) better composure. This is (it's well-known) one of the benefits of the blog format as opposed to IRC etc., you can kick back and (with the help of dictionary, thesaurus, Strunk White etc.) take the time to arrange your thoughts and present them in a presentable (not dispresentable) fashion.

[Link: iraqwarwrong.blogspot.com...]

Take more time ... LOL.

ROTFL

15 zombie  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 2:05:36pm

Oh my god. If this is not an extremely sophisticated parody, this site has got to be the most ludicrous blog in history. Example:

his not to say that Matthew Yglesias and Oliver Willis homosexuals in real life. Though, they could be AFIAK, and if they were, that would be Something to celabrate. But AFIAK they are not (in real life), just in the blogosphare. (Figuratively). Although, I must say I do have to wonder about Oliver Willis, He posts ALOT relly about how much he likes Jessica Abla or whatever. It just seems "forced" (like maybe is there Rosie Odonnell/Tom Cruise thing going on here?) Just a theory. And if so, that's GREAT, I totally would embrace Oliver Willis (not litterally). about all that. (&c) As for Yglesias, I knew I would like his blog from the start by his name (diverse). (You can tell a lot from names relly Or at least I can).

Good God A'mighty!!!

And I thought my spelling and sentence structure was bad. This would have been enough to send my old high school English teacher into canniption fits. Is canniption even a word? Cann't find it.

Oh well.

The upside to this sight is Ive finally found an anti-war type that I cannt get upset with. The person seems good natured and well meaning if very naive and under-informed. If only all anti-war type were like this instead of the tin foil hat loons (M Moore, Move on.org.. ect)

23 Thom  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 2:10:22pm

We are in the presence of greatness folks.

Although many are misunderstanding it. A starker contrast between Bush and Kerry. canot be found Othe then by reading this article.

and links to: Kerry: Still Would Have Approved Force for Iraq

Bush lied us into war. (He didn't just lie us towards war but INTO war - and for that matter - THROUGH war). (Lots of other prepositions too - no time here to mention them all). This lie tricked Kerry (Vietman vet) into voting (haD no choice to vote other way) for the war. Thus Kerry (guy who was tricked) should now be made President.

28 J.D.  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 2:12:34pm

Deep thinker, this one.

We owe France a big apology (if you ask me) for not gathering (collecting) some of their young men (just a few - proportionally) to fight and die alongside ours in the (wrong) Iraq war (that we should not of started). It's like a slap in the face to Europe! No wonder, They hate us so much (despise relly) (like the less sophisticated bumpkins with no universal health care, that we are). But more to the point, teh very basic fact of no Frenchmen dying alongside ours, is relly one of the BEST arguments for why the Iraq was war wrong. So. Use it at your leisure.

He doesn't like Yglesias either:

Matthew Yglesies (Yale) has another fine post. He makes the (important) point as How, because of Bush's (all pervading) deceptionness, when The Administration (i.e. person in the Bush Administration - The Administration is shorthand for all such people) says something, you can (and should) just Disbelieve it, despite you "have no evidence indicating that it isn't true". Heck you can Disbelieve stuff The Administration says even if it IS true. Why?

Because Bush such liar! (I think this is how argument works. I don't have Matthew's high Education so I may not of summerized it carefully - as always RHTH).

Oh man, listen to this:

Some European soccer teams I know about (only partial list, relly): Manchester United (I think Sporty Spice from Spice Girls played for this team for awhile-- not sure?); Italy (VERY well thought of and skilled; one of best soccer games I think I ever saw was Italy v. Manchester United(pretty sure) in 1984 Olympic trials on TV); Brazil (great player "Pele" - hey ignorant Americans, that's pronounced Pay-lay.) For more information check out classic Sylvester Stallone movie Victory, about famous (undefeated) Nazi German Soccer Team - his haunting portrayal of Pele: spot-on.

When, oh when, will America embrace the ``World's Game'' - this Soccer - to her bosom?

SPORTY SPICE? Has this guy EVER picked up a newspaper?

Don't answer that.

The Iraq burrito
I was looking at my burrito at lunch and my thoughts turned, as they wont to do, to the Iraq war.

Iraq is (was) like that burrito. It holds together nicely. It is self contained. You don't get your hands dirty. From the outside you cannot see whats inside and vice verca.

Now Bush (neocon puppet) comes along like a and cuts that burrito with recklessly a knife and fork. into pieces. But as anyone who's ever knows, that is not the best way to eat a burrito. You make a mess over everything. You wind up spilling the chicken (Shiites) and beans (Kurds) and so on (Sunnies). You can eat it from your plate (if you have one i.e. not Tacobell) with regular knife and fork, but look: some forkfuls then have only beans (Kurds), some only chicken(Shi'a's.). Not the way Burrito was intended!

Priceless!

4. It was the at least the 3rd act of war that Osama has brought against the United States of America. (world trade center bombing, USS Cole)

5. Saddam Hussein is a murderer and a horrible butcher.

Saddam Hussein murdered hundreds of thousands of his own people in cold blood and buried them in mass graves.

Saddam Hussein used WMD against his own people.

Saddam Hussein bribed European UN officials to allow him to sell oil for cash instead of food and to provide political support for his regime of murder. He gave each of them millions of barrels of oil. That is a lot of cash at $40 per barrel.

Saddam Hussein used this cash to fund his WMD programs.

Saddam Hussein failed to comply with UN weapons inspectors.

Saddam Hussein was repeatedly warned that furture non compliance would result in the use of force.

Saddam Hussein continued to fail to comply.

61 Crusader  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 2:28:34pm

This guy (or gal) is genius!!!

Another excerpt, in which he compares "A Touch of Mink" with the Iraqi war:

"During the Runup-to the war we found ourselves in something of a sleazy Cary Grant role. We (by "we" I mean George W. Bush) wanted to seduce and corrupt and ruin an innocent pureness with no strings attached. (=We wanted France to authorize a UNSC resolution endorsing the invasion). France (like Doris Day) wasn't buying! Not without marriage (i.e. full control of the troops etc, having huge say in future of Iraq etc, assurance of prior contracts being honored etc). In the movie there are lots of snags and slipups but Grant and Day do end up together (Man, and wife) (in traditional homophobic sense). This is because Cary Grant is ultimately honorable in these kind of movies.

If only George W. Bush were such as honorable. But no. He rapes Doris Day and then tosses her into the gutter.

That's our President! "

Amazing!

lived in a little studio apartment on the second floor and below me was a preem medical student from India named Arun. Now, keep in mind here that Arun was not perfect (by our (Western) standards) downstairs neighbor either, anymore than I was. (Upstairs). Many's a time where, I would be up at 3-4 A.M. kept awake by his stereo ("I Got The Power" - C&C Music Factory - his favorite) or by him talking LOUDLY to family back home in India in native language Hindy (Note: as many ignorant Americans (Neandertheals) not realize - language spoken by Indians (from India) not Indian, language spoken by Indians Hindy). At first I got frustrate - But, I would always tell myself, He is from a different culture and I must be tolerant. If I cannot tolerant his culture at 4 A.M> then where does that leave us. (I would have to apologize to him for being so intolerant, frankly). The true test of multi cultural tolerance occurs at 4 A.M. (Just a little aphorism I thought up - you can use it) So, I would switch on late nite Bob Costas show or Twilite Zone rerun and wait till his culture calms down (just, alittle).

Meanwhile, however, I offended him something greatly, for which still feel guilty. You see when I was (still) in law school (officially) I spent ALOT of time hackysacking. (In my apartment - no good place to do it outside). You know - for exercise. I would stand there and hackysack in front of TV to wile away the time and sweat. Day or night. (You're probably wondering was there enough space in studio apartment to hackysack - well there was (just barely) if I move E-Z chair and keep control (the secret: use your knees ALOT)). Well, I must of hackysacked through 90% of both OJ trials (if you ask me). (In retrospect-- probably would of been better to attend more lawschool classes. Water under the bridge as they say).

I suspect a fake troll. But golly, thats funny.

116 goldsmith  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 2:53:53pm

Sorry, I can't help it:

This is a whole different situation ok. Germany has Germans (white Europeans) who knew what we were talking about when we tried to rebuild their country, whereas Iraq is a country of people who are of the Arab persuasion. You just can't compare the two okay! Not in terms of cultural traditions or how violent they are or anything like that. I say we must respect the proud Arabic cultural traditions of countries which have Arabs peoples in them, not try to defend ourselves against those traditions. No matter how difficult those traditions may be for us to understand, or endure. Only that way lies peace if you ask me. Haven't you also noticed that stupid righties just don't seem to "get" what we're saying about Iraqis being Arabs??

P.S. Not to mention Muslims.

This is dangerous. Aneurysm-producing laughter dangerous. Awe-inspiring actually.

I'm not so sure it's a parody...if it is, it certainly is a masterpiece. Some of the errors--like the mix-up of what Allawi's position actually is--would seem overly subtle if it really was a parody. But if it is a joke, the creator has obviously put a heck of a lot of effort into it, and might thus have made sure to cover all the seemingly insignficant little points.

Maybe he should move to Texas and get a job in the oil patch.

Although since Throbert taught me the secrets of brightly colored text (used only when weather emergencies, like yesterdays advance warning about Charley and next Fridays' advance warning about either Danielle or Earl (all depends whether TD #4 or TD #5 gets promoted to tropical storm first) hitting somewhere between Apalachicola and Port Fourchon, I suspect he could probably get a job as a sys admin.

209 Bernadette  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 3:37:57pm

I'm still undecided on whether or not it's a parody. My first instinct was that it is. But the grammar is very consistent throughout with the exception of a few lucid sentences interspersed.

The structure reminds me of the letters I get periodically at work from mentally ill people (including those who are functionally illiterate (sp?). However, the thoughts are more consistently formed.

I had thought of Charles. I have noticed that on some days lately there seemed to be quite a gap in time when Charles didn't post anything new. He COULD have been working on money-making projects, or he could have been designing this to pull our legs big time!

Who's the expert on determining the location of this blog, techno speaking, including when it was originally created? Is there a clue there?

reaganite-

Enlighten me oh wise one?

an RSS feed is a link you can subscribe to in a feed reader (I use FeedDemon, Bloglines.com is a good web based one if you don't want to install software, and SharpReader is a good free desktop one if you're ok with installing software. So is rssbandit. You have to pay 29 bucks for FeedDemon). This way you can see what's new at all the sites you like to keep up on from one place, without having to visit them all. It's quite handy! I recommend you try out Bloglines first and if you like the concept, switch to one of the desktop versions. I can keep up on over 150 sites' feeds by reading for about an hour each day. If I was to visit each site individually, a, there's no way I could even do that and get anything else done, and b, I would visit all the sites that *didn't* have updates too. Screw that!
If you see an orange XML button or RSS or Atom or "subscribe", anything like that, it means the site publishes a feed you can subscribe to. If you try Bloglines they have a bookmarklet you can just click on in your toolbar, and it will automatically subscribe you to the feed of whatever site you were visiting at the time.

Flag-flying Iranian pulls out

IRANIAN world judo champion Arash Miresmaili, who carried his country's flag in today's Olympic Games opening ceremony, has pulled out of the tournament after refusing to fight an Israeli.

The 23-year-old, twice a winner of the flyweight (under 66kg) world title, opted not to take on first round opponent Ehud Vaks, of Israel, as a gesture of support for Palestine.

"Although I have trained for months and was in good shape I refused to fight my Israeli opponent to sympathise with the suffering of the people of Palestine and I do not feel upset at all," Miresmaili told the IRNA news agency.

Student news agency ISNA quoted Iran's sports officials as saying Miresmaili still deserved the cash prize Iranian Olympic medal winners have been promised by the Physical Education organisation.

"Miresmaili must receive a special prize as he was the prime candidate for a gold medal and I will do my best about it," said head of the judo federation, Mohammad Derakhshan.

It is not the first time Iranian judokas have declined to fight against Israeli opponents.

At the 2001 world championships, Mahed Malekmohammdi refused to face Yoel Razvozov, while Asian champion Masoud Haji Akhoundzade also pulled out of a planned clash with Israeli lightweight Zvi Shafran.

Wuss.

Although since Throbert taught me the secrets of brightly colored text ... I suspect he could probably get a job as a sys admin.

LOL! Man, but it would be a first for me to have a job for which I was under-qualified. The only thing that really depresses me about getting fired from this job is that I have so little to add to my résumé. The entire company was a dispiriting example of private-sector make-work by a federal agency, in this case the FHWA. I learned exactly nothing in the way of transferable skills during my 10 months there.

Anyway, I would appreciate any advice from other LGFers who have been looking for work in the DC area recently.

I'm also wondering whether it's time to dust off my fantasy of applying to the Defense Language Institute... as far as I know, I'm eligible to enlist in the Army until age 35, my GREs were all 99 percentile, I had an excellent GPA in all my Russian language classes in college, and it would be such a kick to learn Arabic for real. And I'd be doing something real for my country. I'm way past the need to be publicly "out" about my sexuality, my frank talk here on LGF notwithstanding.

Okay, open to "that's not a very bright idea" comments...

I suspect Beagle has stopped posting because the 105 mph winds have probably knocked out power at his place, and I suspect WiFi, even with a battery powered laptop, doesn't work when all the electricity is out and most communication towers have collapsed.

We may not see Beagle for three or four days.

It is undeniably a great story. It trots out the usual villains - the big, bad Israelis, this time aided by the bureaucratic Christians. And it casts Raad, with his pure, apolitical, Olympic dream as the spunky victim.

The only trouble is: it’s dead wrong. None of the reporters or news media bothered to check out the allegations or interview a single official from the YMCA or Israeli Swimming Federation. If they had, they would have learned that almost every aspect of the story is either false or a misrepresentation of the facts.

Pity there's no category for lying. The Palestinians would go home with the gold for that one.

363 Fay  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 5:44:11pm

zulubaby, yes, the coverage of the Israel team entrance was very subdued and short, and basically non-controversial. The Israeli team (because the order of entrance was done by the Greek alphabet) came in right behind Spain who had a huge contingent that seemed to wander all over the place and took up an inordinate amount of the camera man's time (was that deliberate?) The Israeli team were followed by the Italian team, another huge contingent that got a very loud reception.

Throbert, I wouldn’t enlist unless you are under 25, although they will take you up to 35. Mentally and physically, it is difficult to go through boot camp if you are over 25. It can be done, but generally the military would prefer its enlistees to be younger than 25 for a variety of reasons. If I had to do it again I would have gone to college and enlisted as an officer. As far as your sexuality is concerned, that is your business as long as you don’t advertise it, or piss someone off. If you are serious then talk to a recruiter, this country can always use intelligent and dedicated people in its armed forces, especially Arabic translators…
As for the link to Idiotland, Yes there are some people who think like this, they used to institutionalise them untill Reagin became president and threw them out because he refused to fund their housing in a institution...

1) The IOC should immediately send him home and ban him for life
2) The Iranian judo team should be required to apologize... or be sent home, too.
3) The Iranian Olympic Commitee should apologize as well... or the whole Iranian team should be sent home.

391 GermanObserver  Fri, Aug 13, 2004 6:33:54pm

I just read (in a German paper) that it was not his decision. They say because Iran doesn't recognize Israel the judo guy was forced to withdraw. Actually I find this more credible as athletes usually prefer sport to politics. And since he's world champion he might not be that afraid of his adversary.

But in that case Iran should be disqualified. Hard for the athletes but the Iranian action is shameful.

At least the Iranian athletes should not be allowed to be honoured with their flag should they win medals (Olympic flag instead like in Moscow 1980).

I apoligize. On another thread, someone and I were looking for the FNDT and I suggested in a fit of fancy,(among other ideas) looking for your posts. I meant no disrespect. Just that you seem to have a ''nose' for either starting or finding same. I, personally, think that is a positive attribute. And, oh, is this the FNDT?

Didn't purchase it, but I was in the Borders across from my work and amazingly, it was not displayed whatsoever. (Not even in the correct place regarding alphabetical order.)

So, if they were too lazy to display it, I decided to take the task on free of charge. Put one on each shelf, cover facing the customer. Granted, only 12 copies, but it helped temper the sickness of seeing f**wad Clinton on every wall and column.

I wasn't sure what the release date was, so during the course of my usual Friday night visit to the Bethesda B&N, I stopped at the Info Desk to ask the status of the book. Before a clerk showed up, I found a grand total of two copies on display - one propped up, the other underneath the prop. It's possible there were copies elsewhere in the store, but I didn't do an extensive search.

Well, to be honest I have not read the whole thread (I usually do), so I wouldn't know. And, unless I've just missed them, the threads seem to be a bit more serious lately, i.e., not as many DT's. Whoops, that doesn't sound good.

In salutation of Linda Ronstat's patriotism dissent I think we should all get out are old records of her again and play them. (Or tapes). When I get home I plan to find dig up from storage space (and BLAST) "Hit Me With Your Best Shot", "Love Is A Battlefield", "Hey Mickey", "She works Hard for the Money", "My Baby Takes The Morning Train" and all that great old good stuff.

Er, that's somewhat less painful than visualizing Sit On My Face, And Tell Me That You Love Me (Python Players in Royal Canadian Mounted Police drag) sung by Michael Moore.

Hello, Fellow Lizards! In my green, scaly talons, I proudly hold a copy of Unfit for Command, which I purchased not 'alf an hour ago.

Well, I am now officially on an austerity budget, having gotten canned today, so I will beseech you to drop some juicy Fair Use crumbs if you come across a particularly toothsome passage.

Completely OT, but hey, it's the drinking thread: After Donna V.'s mention of Fiddler on the Roof in the Musicals for Musical Haters thread from last week, I realized that I didn't own the soundtrack, so I went out and bought it. (I picked the movie version with Topol. In retrospect I really should've held out for the original Broadway version with Zero -- I grew up listening to that on my folks' reel-to-reel tape player -- but oh well.)

Anyway, I now have Fruma Sara's part from the "Tevye's Dream" sequence lodged stubbornly in my ear, especially because I'm imagining Dina Matos "Mrs" McGreevey appearing in the tormented sleep of Golan Cipel:

♫ FRUMA DINA: What is this I hear about you rogering my husband?

CHORUS: Yes, her husband!

FRUMA DINA: Would you do this to your neighbor, Dina M. McGreevey?♪

CHORUS: M. McGreevey!

You know, for the past seventeen months, I've been sort of vacillating between "war was right" and "war was wrong" just wishing that someone would put it into simple terms for me so that I could have done with the moral ambiguity, and the need to think independently. To the person that sent this email to Charles: whoever you are, thank you. Now I can just say, "The Iraq War was (is it over?) wrong (not right)." Phwew! This will free up my neocortical tissue for more important matters like whether to wear the felt green Birkenstocks to this weekend's A.N.S.W.E.R. pre-RNC pep rally, or the taupe ones. /überlib

Following the link and then this freaks links I learned something, Will Wheaton from Star Trek hates Bush.

[Link: www.wilwheaton.net...]

Funny thing is this cannot hurt his career. :-)
Maybe he is jealous, after all Bagdad Bob's job prospects are better than Wheaton's.

Even Bush is fan of Iraqi information minister

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) - Now that the campaign to topple Saddam Hussein appears to be over, even U.S. President George W. Bush admits he is a fan of the public relations style of former Iraqi information minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf.

"He's my man, he was great," Bush enthused in an interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw on Thursday. "Somebody accused us of hiring him and putting him there. He was a classic."

What?

He's my man?

HE'S MY MAN?!

HE IS THE ENEMY, MR. BUSH!

You know who Bush's MAN should have been? Every American soldier who was in Iraq fighting his immoral, illegal, and totally unnecessary war. Every child who is without a father or mother, every husband or wife, son or daughter who isn't ever coming home . . . they are "your man," Mr. Bush.

Bush said he had made a point of watching Sahaf, as well as scenes such as the toppling of a huge bronze likeness of Saddam Hussein.
"I did watch some of his clips," he said. "I get a lot of things secondhand, but in the case of the statue or Sahaf, somebody would say, he's getting ready to speak and I'd pop out of a meeting or turn and watch the TV."

Oh, fantastic. I am filled with confidence. Mr. Bush is doing an outstanding job at the head of the most powerful military on the planet.

I'm glad the President of the United States, during a war, is jumping out of meetings to watch his "man" on TV. I'm glad Mr. Bush didn't let a silly thing like running the country interfere with his watching his man on TV.

Sahaf has developed a worldwide following. A Web site that sprang up called welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com was forced offline earlier this month by a rush of global interest that drew as many as 4,000 requests a second for the page.

I wonder how many of those HTTP_requests came from whitehouse.gov?

With his trademark beret, Sahaf became a cult figure on television with his daily briefings, appearing from behind a sea of microphones as he condemned the American "infidels" and at times flatly denied what viewers around the world saw unfolding on their TV screens.

Infidels. Well, if the cowboy boot fits . . .

So here's the big question: If people who don't stand behind Mr. Bush's laughable foreign policy, and the wars it has created (and will continue to create), they're "against us." If people dare to express an opinion like, "I am ashamed of Mr. Bush" they are boycotted, threatened with injury and death. (I'll take it one step further: I'm ashamed of Mr. Bush, his entire administration, and the Congress that has given the Executive branch of government unchecked and unquestioned imperial powers to do whatever they please.)

So considering all that, what do we do with a President who cheers on a member of an enemy government, part of his notorious "Axis Of Evil," as "my man?"

I tell you what we need to do: we all need to --

Oh, I have to go. American Idol is on.

So deep you can't get under it. :-)
