 RetweetTreason Against Rock 'n Roll

Mon, Aug 23, 2004 at 2:15:45 pm PDT

Alice Cooper beautifully sums up the clowns who will be part of the Vote for Change tour: Alice slams anti-Bush rockers. (Hat tip: Joel.)

WINNIPEG — In the eyes of Alice Cooper, all the rock stars campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry are guilty of one thing: treason. The shock-rock legend, a staunch Republican who attends NBA games in Phoenix with Arizona Senator John McCain, was disgusted when he learned of plans by Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, R.E.M. and other bands to hold a series of concerts aimed at unseating U.S. President George W. Bush.

“To me, that’s treason. I call it treason against rock ‘n’ roll because rock is the antithesis of politics. Rock should never be in bed with politics,” says the 56-year-old Cooper, who begins a 15-city Canadian tour on Aug. 20 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

“When I was a kid and my parents started talking about politics, I’d run to my room and put on the Rolling Stones as loud as I could. So when I see all these rock stars up there talking politics, it makes me sick.

”If you’re listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you’re a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we’re morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal.”

The Central Consistory solemnly warns the authorities, recalling that
like all the citizens of this country, whatever their origin or their religion, the Jews of France intend to be defended by their justice and that the patience of the Jewish community has limits inevitably.

So who is the Central Consistory? Is that a Jewish authority or council in France? Does this mean the Jews of France are
-not taking it any more, and taking their protection into their own hands or
-demanding better police protection ("defended by their justice") or
-what?

No More Mister Nice Guy

Alice Cooper 1973

I used to be such a sweet, sweet thing
'Til they got a hold of me.
I opened doors for little old ladies,
I helped the blind to see.
I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm feeling mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

I got no friends 'cause they read the papers.
They can't be seen with me and I'm gettin' real shot down
And I'm, I'm gettin' mean.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
They say he's sick, he's obscene.

My dog bit me on the leg today.
My cat clawed my eyes.
Ma's been thrown out of the s-social circle,
And dad has to hide.
I went to church incognito.
When everybody rose, the Reverend Smith, he
He recognized me,
And punched me in the nose.

He Said:
No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
He said you're sick, you're obscene.

No more Mister Nice Guy,
No more Mister Clean,
No more Mister Nice Guy,
He said you're sick, you're obscene.

"What the hell did people do about the heat before electricity was discovered?"

Work really hard from sunrise until it became unbearable (perhaps about noon). Siesta. Travel if possible. Accomplish what can be done at dusk. Sleep. Repeat.

Hmm, maybe this explains why big Mo was so cranky ...

Mr Pol's link, autotranslation courtesy of Google:

Popincourt official statement
Official statement of the Central Consistory of France
Following lignoble case of arson against the Jewish social center of the street Popincourt, in Paris, the Central Consistory of France expresses all at the same time his nausea and his deep lassitude.

These odious acts follow upon too many other crimes anti-semites which took place these four last years in France. We condemn, once more, with force this drift and the vulgarizing of linjustifiable.

The Central Consistory notes however that its judgments, like those of the political authorities of France, are not enough obviously any more.

He cannot sempêcher note the shift which exists between the remarks contristés or made indignant of circumstance, with each new attack counters goods or people, and the decisions taken, in same time, by French Justice.

This one, by releasing the notorious anti-semites or by punishing those which dare to carry felt sorry for, deliberately relegates lantisemitism to the row of simple offence dopinion.

The Central Consistory solemnly warns the authorities, recalling that like all the citizens of this country, whatever their origin or their religion, the Jews of France intend to be defended by their justice and that the patience of the Jewish community has limits inevitably.

The central Consistory is dismayed to have to make these remarks while at the same time France commemorates the final victory against the Nazism and the collaboration and the release of its capital.

Dole Defends Swiftees in Call From Kerry

Dole said Kerry responded, "I haven't spent one dime attacking President Bush."

But the Republican war hero shot back, "You don't have to. You've got all the so-called mainstream media, plus you've got MoveOn.org and all these other groups that have spent millions and millions of dollars trying to tarnish Bush's image."

"Don't tell me you don't know what some of these people are doing," he told Kerry.

"Everybody likes quiet heroes," Dole added, saying he told Kerry, "John, everybody knows you were in Vietnam and the less you say about it, the better."

Re: Request for Investigation, Determination and Final Disposition of Awards Granted to Lieutenant (junior grade) John Forbes Kerry, USNR.

While a commissioned officer in the inactive Naval Reserve, Senator Kerry traveled to Paris, France and met with official delegations from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the Provisional Revolutionary Government (the Viet Cong). The Vietnamese Communists eagerly met Senator Kerry and benefited directly from the obvious propaganda victory (See Exhibit 2, page 126 – 129).

These acts are clear violations of the legal prohibitions on individual citizens negotiating with foreign powers (18 U.S.C. ' 953) and the constitutional prohibition against giving support to our nation’s enemies in wartime (Article III, Section 3). Additionally, as a commissioned officer of the Naval Reserve, Senator Kerry was subject to the UCMJ, and likely violated Article 104 (“Aiding the Enemy”) through his actions with the North Vietnamese/Viet Cong delegation.

Betar won't get any help from anyone. Certainly not any of the major organisations who have money... they're all following the politically correct line and don't want to upset any politicians.

That in itself is a good reason not to fund any of the major organisations, but to help little grassroots ones like Betar, who actually get something done, instead of talking about doing things like most of the others have done since the "golden days" of the 70's...

Can you legally own private firearms and carry in Israel? Please tell me "yes".

That sounds a bit awkward. Should've previewed. Sorry.

103 evariste  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 2:12:17pm

Mr Pol, thank you. I just needed to read

2. Firearms possession is not by right, but by permission based on policies which, in effect, promote public safety by assuring that there will in all public places be competent, trained civilians bearing firearms. The philosophy of gun control in Israel is that firearms training is available to the entire loyal, law-abiding citizenry. In addition to the firearms that are privately owned, firearms are freely distributed to trained competent, civilians by the Israeli government (Army or police). And therefore guns are, by comparison to the U.S., very available to the ordinary citizen.

and

4. It is easy for a law-abiding citizen (with no criminal record) to get a permit for a handgun- The primary reason for a permit to issue is personal protection, including the military function and self-defense against terrorism- people have firearms for other reasons too, such as hunting or target shooting, but the main reason is for self defense.

and I'm quite happy with how Israel does it. I'm not completely happy about the line I bolded, but practically, Israel ends up with widespread firearms ownership and expertise. So, good! As for

There is no distinction in Israeli law between carrying a handgun and possessing it: A permit to own a handgun is a permit to carry it on the person (concealed or not concealed). Carrying it is recommended, because then the gun is protected from thieves or children.

I always thought the American distinctions of open carry and concealed carry and requiring permits for them above and beyond those involved in ownership were rather artificial and supercilious. So Israel definitely has the right idea there.

10. To summarize: It is not as easy to get an illegal firearm in Israel as in the U.S.A., but it is possible. However, the phenomenon of drug dealers or other criminals walking around with a firearm on their person is unknown in Israel.

Brill.

In general israelis do not fire guns in the air to celebrate soccer victories, or do drive-by shooting etc.

In Israel a bus full of teens wearing green uniforms with outmatic weapons is reasuring. I was in a bar once in Israel and a soldier cam in, but his uzi on the floor under his feet, and ordered a beer. I wondered how many beers he would drink, but was not overly concerned. If that happened in Los Angeles I would soiled myself in fear.

I believe the comment is directed at those who have no special political insights, yet use their musical fame to attack Bush and bash my people (conservative-Americans).

I don't have quite as much of a problem is they were using their fame for positive works. Such as fund raisers for the families of servicemen serving overseas.

Alice Cooper isn't saying he doesn't care who leads the country, he's saying that some entertainers are full of themselves.

118 evariste  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 2:38:50pm

Mr Pol: I followed this link off Charles' Yahoo sidebar; it says both that US permission to build in the settlements is only to help Sharon ram the Gaza plan down Israel's throat. Comments? Does this strike you as plausible or just some crap the "journalist" made up?
I'm not very happy about it if it's true.
Another thing it says that I thought was strange was that the plan was to uproot the 8000 Israelis in Gaza. Yet one of the essays on the site you linked us a couple days ago about Gush Katif said there were 10 000 Jews in Gaza. Are they not all being evacuated, or is the Reuters guy lowballing the population?

Yeah, great partisan shot (about how liberals especially only care about getting publicity).

How bout this: typical rethuglican line, mocking someone by using a gay joke. Of course, logically, there's no connection with a crisis with one's sexual identity and genital size, but maybe that's what you tell yourself late at night when you're all alone. I don't know, and I really don't care.

Also, it's pretty widely believed that those with the most to hide are the most vocally critical (maybe you should talk with someone you trust. I'm looking out for you here).

Was never into metal myself, as you can glean from the fact that I actually like Cherry Pie in a non-ironic way. (The song itself, and the video, were so deliberately camp that you don't need irony to like them. At least, I think it was deliberate.)

Have you seen all of the activities/groups/charities that Nugent is involved in ? And if you think Nugent gets a lot of press, well, I would love to know what news you watch and paper you read.

Not like Mr Ben 'Get Out The Vote' Affleck -

*** FEBRUARY 2003 UPDATE: In the new issue of Vanity Fair (March 2003), Ben Affleck again floats the possibility of a future run for Congress. "I think there's a real nobility to public service," he told the magazine. "It would be fun to run on a platform I really believed in, without being beholden to the win-at-all-costs mentality." But when he launches that campaign, Ben will have to explain his pathetic voting record--he's made it to the polls exactly once in the past ten years--and didn't even bother to vote in 2000, when he traveled the country with Al Gore in an effort to get out the youth vote. While TSG nailed Affleck for that bit of hypocrisy back in April 2001--as our below story shows--the actor remained unregistered until three months ago, when he finally re-upped in Los Angeles (and voted in the November general election). So, Ben, welcome back to the franchised world.

Can you legally own private firearms and carry in Israel? Please tell me "yes

Of course you can. You only have to have a license. The license is given to anybody who is not a criminal, and who has no history of mental illness. Both my hubby and I have the license, he got it as an officer in IAF, and I - as a member of the CD. We never came around to actually buying guns. LOL.

There was a case several months (a year?) ago when I women shot a terrorist with her private gun in the supermarket in Dugit before he activated a bomb. Also, most shooting/stabbing terrirust attacks in Israel were ended by the citizens killing/wounding the terrorist.

There is far less fascination with weapons and shooting among Israelis than among Americans, which is understandable IMO.

Alice Cooper a Republican? Who'd'a thunk! While his remarks sound nice, he's wrong. Popular music, including rock, has been full of politics. Check out the lyrics of songs of the early 70's.

Even folk music was political. Peter Paul and Mary are still in the anti-war movement, singing lots of their old time favorites and some new political songs, too.

But I still like how Alice thinks.

Thank you, Alice Cooper. I dislike it when entertainers presume to tell me how to vote or what to think.

It seems to me fair enough if they - before the show or something - make a pitch for their favorite charity. But I hate being preached at. I paid for a ticket to listen to music. I don't think they're morons, though I appreciate the remarks.

208 blt  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 5:14:09pm

Another entertainer with heart and mind in the right place -- Larry Gatlin in the WSJ today (subscription needed - excerpts below).

To say, as John Kerry has, that "If attacked I will respond decisively" is not enough in today's world. Good Lord, Senator Kerry -- Barney Fife would respond decisively if we were attacked again! President Bush had the strength of will and courage to preemptively take out those who would attack us. I say "Rock on, Mr. President" (you too, Bruce). Keep checking out the bad guys and let Barney keep peace in Mayberry (a little humor in the middle of a very serious situation).

My gratitude to the president isn't confined to his role in keeping us safe. His tax cuts have helped all Americans who pay federal income taxes and have jump-started an economy that was in recession through no fault of President Bush. Those who refuse to see that have their heads in the sand and a "Kerry for President" bumper sticker on their SUVs. (I'd say the former condition is pretty much a prerequisite for the latter.) I'm no economist, but I do know two things for sure: I never got a job from a poor man; and the more money people have in their pockets, the more jobs they create by spending that money.
. . .
In closing, I'd say this to Bruce Springsteen: We do have something in common -- we were both "Born in the USA." From the bottom of my heart I say, Thank God.

Actually if I am not mistaken, Alice Cooper is also a Christian and quite a decent gentleman...his stage persona aside...

And if Skynrd are going to be supporting the Repubs, that is just awesome and not at all surprising...

Even though they lost 3 original members in a plane crash in 77 including the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, the new version of Skynrd is still excellent and are led by the brother of Ronnie, Johnny Van Zant who sounds almost identical to Ronnie...very very good stuff...

Nice too see the odd person in the entertainment industry have a decent head on their shoulder!!!

Kudos to Alice!!!

217 veebee  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 6:15:17pm

I'm not surprised that a shock-rocker turned out to be a grounded person. To be Alice Cooper one has to be either completely deranged or very sane. Cooper is a very sane person who can separate life from play. What's great, is that he teaches his fans to do the same!

Somebody above brought up the fact that there are many protest songs out there. And there are some folk songs that actually make sense as protest songs and that almost of qualify for rock'n'roll. But real rock'n'roll is about fun. It's a shame that so many people are shy about admitting it. I guess with big stars like Springsteen, Madonna and all of them... it really messes with their heads, and they feel guilty, and they have this need to prove something. So they have to come up with some sort of a political cause and sway starry-eyed teens.

As for the protest rock songs... if they are important, it's because we have this outdated idea that left-wingers are rebels. When rock musicians who need to be rebels and outlaws identify with left-wing causes, they conform our expectations. Other then that, rockers are laughable political spokesmen. The smart ones, like Cooper, keep art and politics separated. If Cooper would start a Kerry is Chamberlain tour... well, first of all his audience wouldn't know who Chamberlain was...

Jews may have the right to carry in Israel..and they should have, cause it is needed...but last I heard..Jews dont fire these lethal weapons in the air willy nilly..cause ITS STUPID and its wastes bullets and you could "put an eye out"...

Mostly cuase it is StUPID tho..and furthermore it isnt a substitute for fireing off your DICK. (I think THATs what really is involved with Arabs fireing off their weapons like they do--I swear thats ONE of the reasons they do that.)

Arabs need LOVE and KINDNESS from their families..and they need to get loveingly LAID. World would be alot safer if they indulged a bit with women who could actually FEEL what was going on. Geezeee.

This Russian guy did that EXTROIDINARY Hi Bar Exercise..(It was really something..graceful, strong, skilled, beautiful..Im running out of words here..It was FABULOUS) and they gave this guy a redic low score. The entire audience errupted in fury over the scroe they gave the Russian and good for them!!! A Three Year Old could tell how wrong that score was. When this whole Olympics is over..they need to look into the JUDGING of at least the Gynmastics Events (there were other too low scores as well) and find out what the FUCK is going on there.

I guess the Ballroom Dancing..that DID make the Olympics..will be in the next WINTER? Olympics. Or...do we have to wait till the next Summer Olympics? (STOP THAT SNICKERING...I know you all are doing it out there...lolol) Think about it tho. Rather see the Tango..than some wanna be Ester Williams type doing that stupid syncronized crap in the pool? What the hell is THAT anyway? Certainly NOT any kind of sport--neither is that stupid gymnastics thing? with the balls and the ribbons? What IS that? And what about that winter thing with the broom and the big hocky puck on ice? What kind of sport is that? (that Canadian Sport) Ice broom Shuffleboad?

Least ..Dancing..is straight up Dancing...The Dancing Community are updating the "Swing" that theyve used in Competition. Its now really a Swing/Jitterbug/Jazz/ROCK combination... Gonna be really neat. ALso...Cha Cha is sort of being updated as well..,...is also gonna morph into more of a Salsa Dancing.. or at least Salsa will be part of the Latin catagory. THAT is going to be SOOO much fun. Theve udated the hairsyles..and theyve thrown out the stupid dresses they used to wear in Competiton...All Modernized..So...get ready ..and get ready to call your dance studios cause when you see it you will be wanting to dance too. Its soo much--- I cant wait.

From VOA

The State Department said Monday the United States continues to seek a freeze on Israeli settlement activity even though it has refrained from criticizing new moves by Israel to expand existing West Bank settlements. It said technical-level talks are being held with the government of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on its building plans.

The Bush administration is insisting that it continues to support, and seek, an end to Israeli settlement activity in Palestinian areas amid press reports and Arab charges that it has softened its stand on the issue.

[...]

"Settlement activity in the occupied territories must stop," [State Department Deputy Spokesman Adam Ereli] said. "That is the position of the United States. That is what the parties signed up for. The 'road map' provides a way forward toward a freeze on settlement activity. That is what we are working for. So I think it's wrong and inaccurate to write that somehow the United States is condoning or supporting or otherwise turning a blind eye to agreements made in the Road Map, and at Aqaba. Those agreements remain."

QED. Bush cannot be trusted.

241 veebee  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 9:13:16pm

I missed gymnastics today. I try to watch it as much as I can -- the athletes are absolutely breathtaking. There is usually something wrong with the judges, and the networks, too. Did they really have to show Paul Hamm falling over on the judges' table ten times in slow motion?

242 evariste  Mon, Aug 23, 2004 10:53:52pm

Mr Pol, I think he means well, even though his plans for Israel are entirely poisonous. I only wish his intentions could be synched to his policies.
Bush is principled about few things. Here is one area where I wish he would be more principled.
I do think he's been the best American president for Israel, which is basically a booby prize.

A strange little story here...

The guy who got me into Alice Cooper, way back in my sophomore year in high school (1972), was the orphaned son of a man who had Johnny Spann's job, i.e. a CIA paramilitary officer who died in the line of duty.

Scott went on to join the Navy and then the Coast Guard, and died in a freak accident while on active duty.

He introduced me to practical conservatism as well as Alice Cooper, and I sure wish he could be alive to see that Alice is fighting the good fight in his stead.

255 veebee  Tue, Aug 24, 2004 8:22:53am
