Dutch Member of Parliament Geert Wilders has quit his liberal party, in a dispute over the admission of Turkey to the European Union: Outspoken right-wing MP quits VVD, goes it alone. (Hat tip: Norwegian kafir.)

AMSTERDAM — MP Geert Wilders has quit the Liberal VVD party in a dispute over his outspoken right-wing views. He will remain in the Dutch Parliament as a one-man party.

Wilders announced his decision on Thursday night after talks with VVD parliamentary leader Jozias van Aartsen, Finance Minister Gerrit Zalm and party chairman Jan van Zanen in The Hague.

Liberal MPs had been concerned for some time that Wilders’ statements have been too right-wing.

Wilders and his Somali-born party colleague Ayaan Hirsi Ali have led the criticism of Muslims in the Netherlands for failing to integrate and adhere to western values. They have both attacked the wearing of the veil.

Wilders has not spared his own party either. His statement referring to the VVD as a home for the elderly also hit the wrong mark among his colleagues.

The main sticking point was eventually the expansion of the European Union. “I was and remain opposed to the entry of Turkey to the EU and cannot accept a compromise on that,” Wilders told news agency ANP.

Watching the movie "Remains of the Day" right now. What an unbelievable classic.

The scene with Chris Reeves as the American politician ripping the European appeasing "gentelmen" new orifices over trying to engage in "peace" with Hitler is poignant and timely.

You must be new. bigel gets challenged and bitch-slapped on a regular basis. His conviction that the binding theme of the entire world is to kill Jews gets slapped down alot.

But, if you don't see us diving on his case in this instance, there are two reasons;

Slamming bigel can totally derail a thread from its orignal purpose/discussion.

He is bigel. A one-trick pony sometimes. And we just say, 'yeah, bigel, whatever'.

But he is a Jew who lost family in the Holocaust, who has family in Europe that is threatened by the anti-semitism that feels more comfortable to expose itself than it has for 60 years.

It's not that that situation give him a status or prestige here - but his is a voice that knows something most of us never have - but most certainly will if Islamofacism is not stopped.

I think you misunderstand what Ms. Ali stands for...

read more about her on this link:
More about muslim women in Holland

A quote from Ayaah Hirsi Ali:

I intend to start on shelter homes, and turn them into women's liberating centres, where women not only get therapy and food, but also training on how to become autonomous. These programmes would be designed especially for Muslim women, because there are no programmes at all. They tend to go to the shelter for a while and then go back to a very abusive environment and then they come and go again.

"Her statements triggered a torrent of abuse and even death threats, and Mrs Ali found herself on the run again. She went into hiding late last year and spent some time abroad, but returned after receiving police protection. She is determined to continue her mission to promote integration and improve the plight of Muslim women. "

American Infidel, did you click the link? It is an Arafat quote. No offense. Not inside. Simply funny.

Bigel,

I see from reading the thread, you lost family in the Holocaust.

So did I. My Paternal Grandfather was the only in a family of 8 brothers and sister (plus parents, aunts and uncles) who escaped the Lodz Ghetto before Jews could no longer escape.

There are cemeteries in Poland with my family name on a crapload of gravestones.

I know what the Germans did. I do not need an education.

And maybe it is because I am Israeli, that I can see past the stupidity of your "Ramboistic" and apocolyptic vision of destroying Europe.

I do know that if what you advocate comes true, then the world will lose a lot more than a bunch of European Jew haters.

The world will also lose that stand by the Jewish stae and people. The families of righteous gentiles will be lost. Good people that simply want to live their lives in peace, raise families and do a little business will be wiped out.

All because of a fantasy that you have of retribution against a whole lot of people that had nothing to do with the murder of the previous century.

I OWE HAVE NEVER BEEN BETTER OFF!
It's only TV and the media
That make people think
That the end of our world is coming.

Only 60 years ago, They were leading Jews to their death, Like sheep to the slaughter! No Country, No Army. 55 years ago!

Seven Arab countries declared war, On the small Jewish State, Only a few hours old!

We were then 650,000 Jews! Against the rest of the Arab world! No IDF [Israel Defense Force]. No mighty Air Force, Just tough people with nowhere to go. Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, attacked all at once. The country the UN "gave us" was 65% desert. The country started from scratch!

35 years ago! We fought the three strongest armies in the Middle East and wiped them out in six days!

We fought against different coalitions of Arab countries, with modern armies, and masses of Soviet Russian weapons, and we still won!

We have today a country, an army, a strong Air Force, a Hi-Tech Economy, exporting millions.
Intel - Microsoft - IBM develop their stuff here.
Our doctors win world prizes for medical developments.
We made the desert flourish, selling oranges and vegetables to the world.

Israel has sent its own satellite into Space! Three satellites all together! We sit proudly, with the US, with 250 million people, with Russia, with 200 million people, with China, with 1.1 billion people, with the Europeans --France, England, Germany, with 350 million people, the only countries in the world to shoot something into space!

To think that only 60 years ago, we were led, shameful, with no hope, to our death!

We crawled out of the burning ashes of Europe, we won our wars here with less than nothing we built an country out of nothing.

Who the hell is Mr. Arafat to make me scared? To make me be terrified? You make me laugh!

Passover was celebrated; Let's not forget what the story is all about.

We overcame Pharaoh,
We overcame the Greeks,
We overcame the Romans,
We overcame the Inquisition in Spain,
We overcame the Pogroms in Russia,
We overcame Hitler,
We overcame the Germans,
We overcame the Holocaust,
We overcame the armies of the seven Arab countries,
We overcame Saddam.
Take it easy, folks, We will overcome the present enemies too.

Egypt? Anyone know where their empire disappeared to? Greeks? Alexander of Macedonia? The Romans? Does anyone today speak Latin? The Third Reich? Anyone heard any news about it lately?

Don't worry. This is a great time to be a Jew. We are here to stay and we do not need the ravings of a madman to defend us, Bigel.

I posted this on another thread. It might be apropo here.

That’s when their obsession began. Put yourself in an Arab’s mind. What did he think then? That the Jews were a mediocre people with no martial traditions, a people that just had almost been completely wiped out in Europe by Christians who were then totally defeated by other Christians. The Jews were the weakest of the weak, the most easily defeated people on earth. But those losers par excellence fought back and won. If the Arabs couldn’t beat militarily 10% of the number of Jews the Germans had so easily exterminated only some years earlier, what did this tell the Arabs about themselves? Nothing particularly pleasant to hear. In short, Israel’s resilience became the living proof of how low Arab power had sunk.

I took my kids to their school (as I have to on my days off to give my wife a break) and then returned home...within an hour I was seeing kids covered in blood screaming for their lives...dead bodies, gunfire and helicopter gunships circling a school...as a parent of children that are the age of some of the kids I saw on TV and as a man I cried my eyes out watching it. I did something earlier that many in Breslan can't do tonight...I kissed my kids goodnight as they slept.

71 True German Ally  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 5:45:27pm

The very short version:

My father (of conservative, catholic leaning) opposed Hitler since 1932. He spent 1933-1937 in Dachau, when he was released very sick. He recovered and took up his clandestine fight (which included procuring faked papers for Jews who wanted to flee Germany). The Nazis didn't find out. In 1944 he was involved with the Stauffenberg coup (not a central actor). He was arrested and we never heard from him again. My whole family was sent to Buchenwald (Sippenhaft). With some incredible luck (and some help) I managed to escape and was hidden by friends in a basement in Dresden, only to live the firebombings. The house was totally destroyed and I was recaptured and sent to Buchenwald again. With some more incredible luck I avoided the "Death March" to Dachau and remained in the camp, to be liberated by American troups in April 1945, half dead.
In 1946 I was called as a witness to Nurenberg. But I insisted to testify that the Soviets had turned Buchenwald into a concentration camp (for their "enemies") again. The Soviets applied considerable pressure, so my deposition was only taken in written.
When I returned to the "Zone" (although I was warned by Americans not to do it), I was arrested by the Soviets, tried for "Antisoviet Propaganda" and "Spying for the USA"), convicted to death, "pardoned" some weeks later to 25 years forced labor in Siberia, sent to the GULag, spent 9 years in Workuta (Arctic Circle), before Adenauer managed to obtain the release of the remaining German POWs and many German inmates of the GULag.

I neither hate the Germans (I am German), nor the Russians. And believe me, I did not chose my name in vain.

I know that we're facing a threat today that compares to the barbary I've witnessed. And we will only win together.

I am very sad and angry today as well. To learn that fleeing children get shot in the back is something the Soviet Communists would not have done.

And I think not even every SS officer would have done it... well a lot would have.

This is not Islamofascism. This is Islamonazism, the total disrespect of the most basic human values.

I don't go so far and blame it on the whole Muslim world. But I think the world MUST ask them: Why do you remain silent? Why do you silently (and often loudly) approve?

It's the same question the Germans had to face after 1945. And no longer does anybody have the cheap excuse of "we didn't know" or "had we only known".

I neither hate the Germans (I am German), nor the Russians. . .

I know that we're facing a threat today that compares to the barbary I've witnessed. And we will only win together.

Truly an inspiration to hear you could survive that without hatred and bitterness. And to comprehend the graver danger we face today. Hatred will not help us win this war, only determination to create a better world free of that vicious hatred we face. May God bless you.

I simply cannot believe how many here are wishing Bigel well.

I hope you get the fuck out of here and never come back with your bullshit, bigel.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Bigel.

94 Rust Never Sleeps  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 5:59:44pm

Bigel,

Why on earth do you find it necessary to attack and alienate those Europeans who are actually /could actually be your allies? This includes me, by the way.

LGF doesn't get much European visits - as you pointed out earlier.. This has also to do with the fact that 1) it isn't easy to participate on American blogs/websites if English isn't your mother-tongue 2) most of us are asleep while LGF is at its most active.

That doesn't mean I can't understand you. You have every reason to be angry. After the Shoah, you should be. What I will never understand is the love for collectivism over invidual responsibility. I thought you were a republican. And why are you so incredibly pessimistic? I thought the Americans where the "can do" people. I loved that about Reagan.

This isn't the first time I've tried to tell you this. Alas, it will not be the last time either. Some discussions have no end.

That will never change that the fact that I am on your side, nor that I really do appreciate (some of) the points that you are making.

It takes stories like that to make me realize how incredibly lucky I've been. We so often complain about a few percentage points on some economic indicator, traffic, weather, or other trivial things. Americans should wake up, kiss the ground, and count our blessings every day.

I hope you consider writing all that in a book, with more detail, if you already haven't.

I normally don't tell my story, I prefer to let my arguments stand for themselves, not to back them up (and overwhelm them) with personal things.

I just felt I had to, right on this day.

Shalom Bigel. May your heart be filled with sweeter things.

I am an American woman 'of a certain age'. For the first time in our memory Americans are beginning to wonder if what you endured is in our future and if we could bear it as you have.

Our imagination fails. I hope our courage will not.

I don't know how those of you who have been utterly helpless in the hands of evil sustain hope.

But, without doubt, we must do it. Please don't go away. Please feel at home here.

bigel: If you learn that even in the face of the utmost evil, there is hope and faith and love, come back. Otherwise, I think it's better for you and for us that you stay away. This is not a site of poison. But I wish you well and I hope you heal.

Believe it or not I can see where he is coming from, I don't agree with it but I do understand. I loathe the way he expresses himself sometimes and I wish Charles would delete his more outrageous comments...but it does not change the fact that I would gladly have a beer with him (for a Brit that's the ulitmate compliment to all the US posters)...because as I've said, in my heart of hearts I know he is a good man.

He needs to learn boundries and if we are any kind of friends surely we should be suggesting them to him (I know I rant at him...but I'm too quick with my mouth as my grandmother would say)...maybe I'm wrong?

I don't want bigel to leave. Yes, he's often over the top but a lot of what he says is true. Europe is not our friend, make no mistake. I'll never condone genocide, I'll never condone nuking an entire country or an entire people, but I do not consider Europe a friend. The EU are criticizing Israel for threatening Syria. The EU is not criticizing Syria for sending mass-murderers into Israel to slaughter Jewish women and children. Europe ain't no friend of mine.

He apologized; he is obviously chastened enough to leave and potentially not come back. Perhaps that is for the best... perhaps I'm wrong to acknowledge his apology and his weaknesses and his inappropriateness. I don't know... I just have always felt that when someone apologizes, sincerely, they deserve to be given a chance to prove whether they meant it or not.

Personally, I think Grayp spoke for most all of us.

This is the worst my people have to offer and I will corral them and show them they are no better than the Nazi scum we Jews overcame 60 years ago.

And I will shut them down at every turn.

Europe is not a block, a government, an ideology. It's a continent with millions of ideas, experiences, hopes... and errors.

Most false judgements are made out of ignorance. So as long as we are ready to listen and learn, there is hope.

We came a long way. For decades, a war between Germany and France has become impossible. Now the danger of a war between Europe and Russia has become remote.

President Bush has reminded us yesterday of the "hopeless" situation in Germany 1946.

The German poet Hölderin once wrote:

"Wo aber die Gefahr ist wächst das Rettende auch" ("There where the danger is, that which saves also grows")

I don't want this thread to turn in a Bigel-bash-fest.

I didn't know that so many people had taken on Bigel while I was writing my contribution. Let me say this in Bigel’s defense. LGF and Bigel in particular played a role in opening the my eyes. Bigel HAS a point. And he has an important role to play in LGF. I have become active in my own country, and Bigel can take some credit for that. Some of Bigel's family members are my fellow-citizens, including his cousin. I hope will meet each other in battle sometime -- it's a small country over here, and we can still crush anti-Semitism and beat the enemy.

However Bigel (and to some extent LGF in general) could have a much larger impact than it has now. Let's work toward that goal too.

And Bigel, please have an open discussion with me some time.

Take care Bigel. Or even better, come back!

"Bigel:

Any other night. I know in my heart of hearts you are decent man. Just now when the time is right to be quiet.

I woke up this morning (not after much sleep) and watched the news...I saw terrified children and adults waiting for an end to a siege in a school.

If you can't see why this is a bad time to bring out your hackneyed, bigoted rants then I despair...but more than that I pray for you.

This is the last I have to say on THIS subject tonight."

AG, this is what I said to Bigel earlier...the same goes for you now...back the fuck down. You've picked the wrong man here.

and as for your...

We Jews are good people.
We Jews have higher standards than Bigel is showing tonite, or any other night on LGF.

...may I remind you that we Jews are also humans...and if it didn't escape your limited view...humanity took a downturn today! I will never call for a country to be destroyed.

"Whipped and stamped out" Let me reference Zell again. Do you know what a fucking metaphor is?

Bigel's statements are exactly the type that are used by the Irvings of the world to show how truly vile the Jewish people are.

If Bigel had the balls apologize for every time he declared a nuke for all of Europe and the Islamic world and everyone else he didn't like, I might think of accepting it.

If I had the power, I would ex communicate the piece of shit.

What have you done for the Jews Dave Ray? Have you defended the Jewish people? You have accepted Bigel's apology for jumping TGA's bones?

Or do you just sit behind a computer thinking you are a tough guy.

I've posted this on another board (Rantburg). That's how I feel about the "deafening silence" of the Islamic World today.

---

The leaders of the Western World should have a joint communiqué, demanding an answer from every Muslim leader, authority and organization to tell us where they stand. No ifs and buts. Just a Yes or No. Silence will be counted as approval of terror.

Those who approve those actions, make lame exuses or stay silent will be treated as enemies. Period.

The free nations will formulate what has to be said... in Arabic and all other languages used in Muslim countries.
And we want statements in all national TV stations and every mosque.

A formal, encompassing condemnation of terror. Nothing added by them, nothing left out.

Time frame: One month.

And after that, anyone who supports states, political or religious leaders/organizations that have not clearly denounced terror, will be treated as a supporter of terror.

We must force them to make a stand. Silence is not an option.

And yes, after that, I'd like the same statements from anyone who counts in the non-Islamic world.

Both sides must show their cards. But let's find out about them first.

194 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 7:05:53pm

"There is not a particle of dirt or filth to be seen." A paling fence was built around the foundation to keep the hogs from shacking up under the joint in the winter time. Moreover, the drainage was downhill from the cattle feeding pens and troughs, and so cow manures, both hard and soft, did not get into the mash tube."

Well, THERE'S your problem. Clearly, there need to be hard and soft cow manures involved in the interest of preventing folks from jumping off of tall structures upon ingestion.

The leaders of the Western World

Most leaders of the Western World want to see the U.S. go down in flames. Gerhard ran and won on a ticket defined by anti-Americanism. Forget the current French gov't, the French have hated us forever and we are only now learning to return the favor. I read somewhere that the entire French Gov't went to Friday services in the mosques in Paris. Are you familiar with Bat Ye'or's Eurabia?
Here is a link to one of my favorite articles The Genealogy of anti-Americanism. The author, James Ceaser is a professor of Political Science at the University of Virginia. This is a precis of his book, The Reconstructing of America. He wrote it after visiting Europe for a conference and found views of America among the European academics that were so skewed he thought they had been indulgin in recreational pharmaceuticals.

I'm less than impressed with many European leaders (including Schröder), but until we can vote him down in 2006, we have to make the best of the situation.

I have bookmarked your link.

Bat Yeor makes for interesting discussions. I would not agree with everything she says but the meetings and papers of the 70s and 80s she describes did happen.

I would agree with her characterization of many members of the intellectual European "elite" that has tried to suck up to the Islamic World, praising its cultural importance for Europe and neglecting its intolerance and current lack of cultural and economical impact (oil excepted). I will gladly admit that I admire the Islamic architecture of the Middle Ages, but I cannot transfer this admiration into present times. There is a lot more to be said on this but I will leave it at that for today.

What she says about Muslim immigration in Europe is debatable though. Also the intellectual impact has been limited.

But the rise of Antisemitism certainly has to do with those initiatives. In the 70s the extreme (and not so extreme ) Left took up the "Palestinian cause", and this blended into a new form of Antisemitism closely associated with the State of Israel. The Palestinians have turned from leftist terror to islamic terror, but the European (and I dare say American) Far Left still romanticises Palestinian terror as "guerrilla" or "freedom fight" and there is a very unhealthy meeting of extreme left and extreme "right" (read Neonazi) antisemitism.

There is "apologist" mainstream Antisemitism as well in Germany. The current Israeli "crimes" (please note the "") are volontarily equated with the barbary of the Nazi regime, in the sense of: OK, these were bad times but others are not much better and now even the Jews do it.

It's hard to educate the extremists. But the "apologists" must be confronted. These are most of the time "normal" citizen.

if you're at liberty to say?

I'm not. I was stunned. Got it once today at lunch and again via another poster via email.

Don't make a big deal out of it. I don't mean to make a Deepthroat thing out of it. Doesn't matter if you would recognize the name or not. DP111's posts are excellent, and after all, we could all be wrong.

272 Elcid  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:02:16pm

zorkmidden

Elcid, LOL!

Oy, what a day... And what a night...

There's 200 people dead in Ossetia tonight. Most of them kids I believe. There are parents whose world ended tonight. And here we are, on LGF, fighting each other. When we know what's out there. We all know this. I'm not going to hold grudges tonight, I don't think any of us will. We'll wake up tomorrow and the photos we saw today will have crystalized and we'll remember again what LGF is all about.

Ain't that the damn truth.

You left out the others slaughtered this week or so though, and here we have a 'pissing contest'...I can see and understand a man of principle, in this case TWO...but it pales with what went on.

Both of these people are outstanding gentlemen, but come on, huh?

273 AG in Houston  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:03:38pm

Grayp

So who is DP111

274 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:10:44pm

lazytart, these pictures are going to haunt me. The one photo of the mother, dressed in black, touching her dead child made me break down and cry. I don't know how I'll sleep tonight. We really didn't need this argument here. We really didn't.

275 lazytart  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:19:41pm

Zorkmidden,

I know. I just watched the entire slideshow on the photowire.

Those were the most horrifying pictures I may have ever seen. The parents were weeping over their children's bodies... all so thin, pale, bloody... the women pulling up sheets to see if it was THEIR child...

I just cannot fathom the horror. I am literally crying now... how in the world anyone in the media can refer to those animals as militants, I'll never, ever know.

There was one picture of a man running, carrying a child who couldn't be more than four years old... his underpants dirtied, bloody.. his hair matted... it looked EXACTLY like the photo from the Oklahoma City bombing of the firefighter carring little Brie from the bombed out day care center... EXACTLY.

All I know is that I am beginning to understand for the first time in my life why many old people crave to die and go on to heaven and leave this place full of heartache and pain and sin and evil. I haven't been to church in almost two years, but I know what the Bible says is true, because it talks about this. It talks about what man's sinfulness will bring to this earth, and it's absolutely horrifying.

I don't know what to do but cry.

276 zulubaby  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:21:20pm

The picture of the police man carrying the baby does me in every time.

277 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:22:55pm

lazytart

"EXACTLY like the photo from the Oklahoma City bombing of the firefighter carring little Brie from the bombed out day care center... "

We had the same thought. I saw that photo and the same thought crossed my mind too.

:-(

278 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:24:49pm

zulubaby, just seeing all these little kids covered in blood... I can't even express how I feel. I have no kids, I can only imagine the parents' agony. Actually I'm sure I can't even imagine it.

:-(

279 zulubaby  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:27:09pm

zorky, I don't even know what to say about it anymore. I was just on the phone with my friend, bawling my eyes out again. It's one of the worst things I've ever seen, and that there were women involved! How? I don't understand and I don't want to understand.

280 lazytart  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:27:58pm

Sigh.

I must bid you all adieu... early morning tomorrow readying my chicken fingers and flask for my husband's pants. My son has strep, and he's absolutely DETERMINED to go to the football game; I have no doubt he'll be fine until kickoff, when his coughing and hacking will start.

But you know what? He's asleep in my bed right now, curled up in his Old Navy boxers and Scooby tshirt and he's HERE. He is HERE WITH ME.

Thank you, GWB.

Thank you, United States Military.

Thank you, GOD.

Goodnight, dear ones.

Gaskets blowing everywhere.

Nuke England? For a blog that is supposedly from the non-radical right, thats just stupid. If someone stated that in a bad argument, I could understand it; heat of the moment. But to take time to type it out, consider it and hit "post this comment" means that on this night, that man is a jackass.

HOney you ain't goin anywhere. I've had a kid sick with strep and that is one ugly illness. Actually, I had strep myself, twice, and I wanted to be dead.

I just realized it's 1:30 in the morning. Bedtime. reaganite, check your mail

284 Lewis  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:33:18pm

Damn, now I'M wondering about DP111.

I have, in fact, noticed that his posts are typically excellent. Never thought he might be anyone I might've heard of, though.

So ... who want's to fight?

I say Old Weller is fantastic bourbon, and I'll put it up against Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, Jack Daniels, or any other pansy-ass whisky you care to offer.

The gauntlet is cast!

285 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:33:50pm

'Night, lazytart.

zulubaby I've been so stressed about this since yesterday, I knew it wasn't going to have a good ending, I've crashed now. I feel depressed and lethargic and life doesn't make much sense anymore.

286 True German Ally  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:38:19pm

"Endure, my heart; yea, a baser thing thou once didst bear"

(Homer, Odyssey)

287 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:43:39pm

True German Ally, that was beautiful, thank you. I should read the Odyssey in English, for the joy of it, but I've just read the Greek.

288 lazytart  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:46:11pm

Grayp,

I know! The child had NO symptoms besides a low grade fever... when I had it, my head was exploding and I threw up constantly.

He's been on antibiotic since Thursday, though, so all that's left is his blasted sinus infection.

Well definitely have to see in the AM, though. I hate for him to miss it.. he's had a crappy week.

To our new poster, TGA, you are an inspiration. Please don't think us silly.. well, we ARE silly.. but we're mainly trying to distract two of our most beloved posters from fighting one another. Your posts have been fascinating, inspiring, wonderful. I'm glad you're here.

Zorkmidden, I know. Things like this stay with us... they SHOULD stay with us. They are burned into our souls for a REASON.

God be with the babies, the parents, the soldiers, the leaders, the Russians.

And God damn the terrorists.

Night, y'all.

289 Lewis  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:46:49pm

Isn't ancient Greek considerably different than modern Greek?

Like, way-worse-than-trying-to-read-Chaucer different?

290 lazytart  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:50:38pm

Oh, one more thing:

EU demands explanation from RUSSIA regarding loss of life in seige...

Beyond disgusting.

Beyond comprehension.

291 Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:52:50pm

Um, so are AG in Houston and Dave Ray done bumping chests?

Oh, and, can we leave Zell out of this?

292 Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:54:11pm

#290 lazytart

Perhaps Russia's explanation to the EU could come as a one-fingered salute at the end of a fully-extended arm?

293 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:57:39pm

Lewis, yes, it's different and Homeric Greek is even more different than Ancient or Modern. But we learned it in junior high and high school, we had two hours of Ancient Greek daily and that's how I learned it.

294 Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 8:59:45pm

Zorkmidden - Since everybody on this thread seems to be in such an apologetic mood, I'd like to jine in and apologise to you for dogging the Greeks so heavy a few weeks back. You have my sincere apologies!

295 zulubaby  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:00:12pm
Dave Ray has had my back many times while I was bashing bigel.
You have had my back as many times as AG.

Why reaganite needs someone to "get his back" with regards to bigel is beyond me. Maybe "get my back" means "helped me pick on him" these days. For all bigel's faults he's never insulted reaganite, never called him names, never attacked him or antagonized him.

296 zulubaby  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:03:59pm

Now it's 250 dead. I can't stand it.

297 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:05:01pm

Titus, it's all cool. I get on the Greeks' case myself. Being Greek I feel I have the freedom to be one of my country's harshest critics.

298 applesweet  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:09:31pm

There have been some horrific flame wars on lgf in the past. But this one must rank up at the top for hate, anger and calls for nuking other countries.
Friday saw the deaths of many children as they ran from danger. It's more than upsetting just reading it, it cannot be imagined how the parents are coping. That is the ones who are still alive.
It's shameful that posters, who are not involved in this tragedy turn on one another with threats.
Sad, very very sad.

299 Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:12:07pm

#297 zorkmidden

That's good then. If only the Greeks were as they were in the golden age of Pericles. I'm an (very) amateur classicist who probably would have been a Philhellene if I'd lived in the 19th century. Maybe that's why I go so hard on them now, I sense that they ought to know better, and would have if they'd not been cowed by four centuries of Turkish-imposed dhimmitude.

I feel ashamed to even say that actually, not often that someone can quote Homer. I apologise.

302 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:24:32pm

Titus, spot on about the dhimmitude. I don't know if you had seen this guy Yanni.

Everything that's wrong with Greece today.

303 True German Ally  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:25:10pm

kardie, of course... (which would bring us to Clinton but better not..)

I have to thank you all. I might not always be a convenient poster, I'm too old for that.

On the other hand, always contradict me when you think I'm wrong.

I will defend Europe and my country from time to time, and slam its politicians when needed (which is often).

But let's never forget: United We Stand, Divided We Fall.

efcharistou!

I just read the "other Greek poster". So you can see how different people of the same nationality can be.

It is one of the most common errors to believe that the Holy Land was "Jew free" for 2000 years.

It's true that many were expelled. But always Jews have lived there. It's THEIR land.

And no people have suffered more for such a tiny stretch of land. And made so much of it.

306 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:44:19pm

True German Ally,

People are obsessed with Israel. I just wish they'd leave the Jewish people in peace. The whole ME would have been prosperous and peaceful now if it weren't for war upon war upon war on Israel and Israelis having to fight for their lives ever since day one. This is one reason I can't get on bigel's case, Israel has no friends, it's the sad truth. And Greece is full of people like Yanni, btw, unfortunately they're the majority.

:-(

307 True German Ally  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:56:55pm

#306 zorkmidden

Israel does have friends... I often wish they were a bit more outspoken about it.

It's amazing that the Arab world cannot see the immense benefit peaceful relations with Israel would bring.

Imagine the Arabs, with their gigantic territory, their immense wealth that oil provides, would have followed Israel's example... developed science, business, culture...

Well but I could also imagine Europe without two World Wars

We just seem unable to learn. We barely survived the 20th century. Will we survive the 21st?

308 cj  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 9:57:29pm

Wow, 300+ comments in a thread about the Netherlands ! Just want to mention that Wilders is more like Jim Trafficante then Zell Miller, at least in the hair department. I fear he will only further splinter the already completely screwed conservative movement over here that is only interested in bickering amongst each other.

309 zorkmidden  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 10:06:45pm

True German Ally

We do seem unable to learn, unfortunately. I never thought I'd see antisemitism in my life at the levels it has reached. And I'm sad to say I disagree with you about Israel having friends. I don't see any country other than the U.S. standing up for Israel, and even in the U.S. it really depends on the administration I think. For example, I doubt that Kerry will really support Israel.

310 adamthemadman  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 10:12:44pm

No, they have been babbling about each other's outrageous posts, telling one another to F' off and such. OT arguments, personal insults, and drinking. That's it.

#309 zorkmidden

I think Israel has more good friends in Germany than you think.

Often they are very quiet. But you would be surprised what goes on behind the scene and often this is more important than empty words.

For those who have any excuses for Palestinian terror, I have only contempt.

312 True German Ally  Fri, Sep 3, 2004 10:17:15pm

Off now, but like Arnie...

I'll be back :-)

As cj pointed out, the VVD is a "Liberal" party in the European/international sense, which means it's actually conservative by Dutch standards. Likewise, John Howard is the leader of the Liberal Party in Australia, but no one here (I assume) would call him a leftie.

315 Ariel  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 4:17:20am

I only read the first 100 or so comments, just far enough to see bigel go off on True German Ally. This is a perfect proof point of why bigel should be banned.

There are three reasons why I participate a lot less on LGF than I used to: 1) work demands 2) way more comments and 3) bigel. Bigel, and his ilk, took a lot of the interesting debates out of LGF and reduced everything to nuking this country or that.

True Germany Ally - I read your story - it's very impressive. I hope that you stick around - most LGFers are decent people.

316 [Engineer]  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 4:56:53am

WOW! one hell of a thread. I was busy being a Protest Warrior last night and wasn't here.

I have had many fights with Bigel and have wished that Charles would ban him, but I have never seen him apologize before. Maybe, just maybe he is learning.

317 Phonicidal  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 4:58:52am

Hold on.

What's the big deal about letting Turkey into the EU? As far is Muslim countries go it's the closest thing to a democracy. And, its government has a decent relationship with Israel. How many other Muslim nations can claim that?

Turkey doesn't have a spotless record. But, as they enter the EU, considering who the other members are, they should actually RAISE the average morality of the union. They would easily leapfrog France, at the very least.

318 grayp  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 5:07:04am

#317 Phonicidal
Three reasons.

1. It's Muslim, secular or no
2. It has good, relatively speaking, relations with Israel, which jeopardizes the ongoing Eurabiazation of the EU
3. Economics - it would draw more wealth from the EU than it could contribute and they are already dealing with that via the newbies, Poland, etc.

319 Geepers  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 5:12:05am

Phonicida (#31),

What's the big deal about letting Turkey into the EU?

Suddenly everyone in Turkey can travel to anywhere in the EU on their now common passport.

This is known as the jihad express provision.

OT, but Tragic Fire in German museum

Even money this is arson by a jihadi.

Guess what is standing right in front of that museum on Democracy Square in Weimar?

The Hafis-Goethe memorial of German-Iranian dialogue between cultures (pics)

Mohammed Khatami gave a pompous speech there at his visit on June 12, 2000.

Hypothesis: After Schroeder in Sochi joined Putins stance against Irani running a nuclear fuel cycle, they dispatched Hezbollah to deliver
a pin-point gesture of renounciation: No more German-Iranian dialogue on the chairs of Weimar.

Still no investigation results regarding the cause of the fire. None (0) of the media covering the fire have mentioned Islamic jihad, let off noticed the Hafis-Goethe memorial.

Charles,

Can you please add some extra random phrases to your bigel (Big Eliza) "Rogerian therapist" program for variety? The insults to my father, to the million voters for the PM-not-to-be Pim Fortuyn, to Ayaan, Theo and Geert and to the soldier who died in Iraq as part of the token Dutch coalition forces are getting utterly boring.

Or maybe you can make the program more intelligent by leaving out the "reflection" altogether if the european country in question is mentioned (in a positive way) in a recent major speech by the President, the Secretary of Defense or the National Security Advisor.

OT RANT

To the "EU" career diplomat Bot, recalled from retirement because Dutch FM Jaap de Hoop Scheffer left for NATO, I would like to say that he missed a grand opportunity to shut his "EU" mouth until and after the final count of murdered and maimed children in North Ossetia is available.

Bloody idiot.

Why don't you retire for real and finish, together with your "progressive" fellow travelers in the media, your common "march through the institutions"? The so-called conservatives these days are the true progressives and are cleaning up the mess your lot has created. Didn't you get the memo or was it not in french?

Not done enough damage? If your insane ideas "progress" any further, Iran and Holland will suddenly become neighbours. Thanks a lot for the "let's abolish all internal frontiers and stick a flower in our hair" Schengen treaty. Please perform life threatening experiments on your own body, not on mine.

The "EU" trade organization should limit itself to coal and steel. Schoenmaker, hou je bij je leest (cobbler, stick to your last)!

And I would dearly love to see NATO kick out France and Turkey, both traitors, and invite Israel and Armenia.

That's all, folks!

326 piglet  Sat, Sep 4, 2004 2:48:13pm

OT?

Instead, Saddam Hussein tried his luck in East Germany. He dispatched scientist Dr Amer Hamoudi al-Saadi to Leipzig for discussions with Karl Heinz Lohs, the director of the Leipzig Institute for Poisonous Chemicals. According to Lohs in an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel years later, al-Saadi pulled no punches.

"You Germans have great expertise in the killing of Jews with gas. This interests us in the same way...How [can] this knowledge...be used to destroy Israel?"

I'm sorry to see that some of the oldest regular posters are for banning bigel. From his last post, maybe these posters will get their wish, he may not be back.
It would be very interesting to see TGA post more of her/his history. It's always good to remember, no matter how old the history is.

329 Geepers  Tue, Sep 7, 2004 11:27:16am

applesweet,

Use the search function at the top of the page. Check bigel's first post.

We've listened to bigel repeat that first post literally thousands of times.

Any number of people have tried to reason with bigel on every level imaginable.

Charles even had to ask him to tone it down, and if you don't know anything about Charles' patience, well it's legendary.

Thank you for the information.
That's a good tool Charles provided, I'll try it out.
