-RetweetBlogging in a 3-Piece

Fri, Sep 10, 2004 at 8:11:54 pm PDT

Since the latest spin is that we bloggers are sitting in our pajamas and typing nonsense because we love the Bushitler so much (who knows why? we just do!), I’d like you all to know that despite the intensely humid SoCal heat I have been blogging all day in a three piece Giorgio Armani suit.

I haven’t owned pajamas for at least 20 years.

So there, Democratic Party operatives. So there. Heat rash be damned.

8 Sarah D.  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:16:25pm

OMG! I simply can't see the Lizardoid Master in an ARMANI suit. I'm crushed...really. Please please tell me that the great Lizard himself is NOT wearing a Rolex!!!

How in the world can you enjoy gamey buttox in an Armani suit?

9 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:17:27pm

I must admit that I am posting while wearing an old ratty t-shirt and shorts. But I defend this by pointing out that it's 0-dark thirty out here on the east coast and sleeping in a good t-shirt and khaki slacks is a might bit uncomfortable.

10 AG in Houston  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:17:50pm

Was there an LFG patch ironed on the right lapel?

11 Teacake!  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:18:12pm

I blog in a tight vinyl dress, fishnet stockings and spike heels, even in the New Orleans summer.

Good work on the suit, Chas, old boy.

New media is hot.

Old media is tired, full of crap, and should be kicked to the curb.

ABC reports Hodges said that CBS mislead him:

Retired Maj. General Hodges, Killian's supervisor at the Grd, tells ABC News that he feels CBS misled him about the documents they uncovered. According to Hodges, CBS told him the documents were "handwritten" and after CBS read him excerpts he said, "well if he wrote them that's what he felt."

I am in my LGF shirt and boxers.

My household income is 6 figures.

I am technically Asian American, but since Israelis don't count as anything, I am just American.

23 Teacake!  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:21:41pm

The only people I saw in pajamas was when I lived in L.A. Bunch of old men used to shuffle on over to the grocery store in their PJs at santa monica near vermont. It was hilarious.

SILENCE YOU FOOLS! The Grand Lizard has spoken (or, ah, hissed)

34 AlexM  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:25:14pm

Charles, the media has realized that they can't force the electorate to believe that they should vote for Kerry because they think he's the biggest war hero since Audrie Murphy.

The media has realized that they can't force the electorate to vote for Kerry on the basis that toppling a madman like Hussein offended Paris.

And now the media is realizing that they can't force the electorate to vote for Kerry using forged documents about something as pointless as Bush's National Guard service of thirty years ago.

So now they're going after your pajamas! Beware! I hope your'e ready for this. The mainstream media has lost its bearings and mind and is about to launch the biggest panty-raid in the history of mankind!

You know, I look at that pic and wonder how something so beautiful can be so destructive. Just seems that nature has a thing for making the most deadly things utterly gorgeous.

40 zulubaby  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:27:35pm

Teacake, so much better but I'm still giggling over the blogging-in-a-vinyl-dress bit. It made me think of luring disco dollies to a life of vice. LOL.

44 Security Mom  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:30:25pm

I'm picturing Charles riding his bike in the 3-piece suit. And for some reason in my imagination this makes him English, because the English are just so surreal sometimes.

I totally agree. Beautiful and awesome. I've heard (where is Ed) that hurricanes are the Earths' air conditioning. What a cool analogy.

But, for us mere humans, they can suck.

50 Teacake!  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:32:33pm

Zulubaby, maybe I'll put it on tomorrow... good thing this is the drinking thread because I've had 3 drinks tonight. Just can't seem to get the motivation to actually go out again... but next week is a different story. And, I just might put on that dress. I don't like trouble and that dress brings it on big time. LOL I usually save it for Halloween!

51 scott in east bay  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:32:38pm

I love New Orleans. You could wear your great-grandmother's wedding dress to get coffee in the morning and no one would say a word (doesn't mean they wouldn't notice..)

52 Frank J.  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:33:43pm

My tailor cuts my suits on mid-20's British patterns- I'll never be fashionable but, then again, I'll never be out of style. Just another century's style, that is.

A very successful lawyer explained it thusly to me early in my career: "Dress British, think Yiddish." So far, it's worked for me...

58 Dar ul Harbarian  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:36:32pm

I am wearing jogging shorts and a t-shirt. I just got back in the house after doing some astrophotography, trying to shoot Andromeda. The clouds moved in (Ed Moran, make them go away!) I am drinking a fine Port as this will soon be a drinking thread.

I dont often post at Lgf but I wanted to thank Charles and all the bloggers for the service they provide. We're watching an historic change in American media and its truly amazing to watch. I believe what the internet has made possible, expanding the arena of ideas, is a real service to democracy and liberty. Thanks again Charles for storming the gates of the media establishment!

I am impressed!

I "blog" in style too. Alas, sitting in my pristine, sylvan retreat in the woods on the shores of Lake Superior, anything is stylish --if I think so!

Actually there is some humor in this because I did in fact bring a lot of my "city clothes" up here and have not worn ANY of them.

What was I thinking with white linen, a black dog and no dry cleaners!

Yeah, hurricanes are real lovely...up until they come a'knockin' on your front door. I still remember Isabel making a visit last year and the fact that I had to spent two hot/muggy Virginia nights without power, hot water, or cable. Work wasn't any better on the third day when I spent my entire shift helping the cook prepare orders for delivery. But I was in heaven when I got home, as we'd gotten power back on while I was at work.

74 amyc  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:40:49pm

is ABC 1) calling the election for Bush or 2) trying to position itself as the "reputable member of the msm? or 3)just trying to bury CBS for competitive reasons?

75 NTropy  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:41:23pm

3 piece Armani suit? Charles, you need to hit MY tip jar then!

76 EE  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:41:49pm

That CBS spokesman who said that on Fox News in order to slur the whole blogosphere was following the rule: If you can't dispute the facts, then do an ad hominem attack.

It's a distraction. CBS wants to distract attention from the fact that it aided and abetted a fraud, to influence the election. So they just change the subject to divert people's attention.

But it is CBS that is in the dock for its actions, not the blogosphere that blew the whistle on this hoax and is presenting solid evidence to show the fraud.

2) Cialis.

78 FreakyBoy  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:42:15pm

Armani claims he conceived the 3-piece suit in 1969, therefore, Charles knew the essential fashion truths, and that's what we should be debating, not the overly wide WoJo Barney Miller tie he's undoubtedly wearing.

79 amyc  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:42:22pm

AG, if you're Ashkenazi, doesn't that technically make you a Euro-American.

(Just kididng, I wouldn't call anyone a Urinepeon unless I was really mad at them, and I've seen you mad on LGF)

Really, I know people say the Bosphorus is the dividing line between Asia and Europe, but that is just one body of water in a giant contiguous landmass that stretches from Cape Town to Normandy to Siberia to Phuket and Singapore.

You are at least as legitimate as Teresa Heinz Ketchup in calling yourself an African-American. Like your soul sistah Zulubaby.

*The big scare angle on the local news is a hurricane that approachs from the SE, essentially up the Mississippi River and causes the Lake to flood the city. Then like the whole stinking mess is flushed into the Gulf so we can start over with a fresh bowl.

As bad as NO has been in the past, the current mayor, Nagin, has really been cleaning up the place.

Ed, it's an Armani. You don't get those from the Men's Wearhouse, I can tell you that. I have a very good eye for fabric and composition, and an Armani costs for very good reason. Provided you have the body for it...

Um, Charles? You shouldn't have mentioned that you don't own jammies. Especially in conjuction with Armani. Especially when the male of the species has been at martial arts on a hot night, and I've been drinking.

Bummer days, dudette.

I got a better challenge for ya and a way to put bloggers on the map.

Have Charles and Zunigos show up on Meet the Press. After covering the bases on who they are and how they're important to the blogosphere, issue the challenge:

Charles is to be given an outta the box PC with a fresh copy of MS Word.

Zunigos is to be given an IBM Selectric Composer and whatever parts he deems necessary to reproduce the memos in question.

Then, challenge them to reproduce the questioned 1973 memo exactly, down to the spacing and font. If Zunigos can do so before Charles and do it with a minimum of fuss (as we would assume nobody would take half a day to do a simple memo that would go straight to a filing cabinet), then we'll consider the matter settled and CBS exonerated. If, however, he can't, then CBS has to admit they're forgeries and tell us where they got them.

106 AlexM  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:51:19pm

ENOUGH! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD ENOUGH!

All this metrosexual fixation on Charles in his pajamas or undewear is totally repellant to me (but at the same time, strangely...ARGH).

107 Yossarian  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 6:51:37pm

Another popular item to the already suggested LGF elegant 3-piece suits would be little stuffed lizards...you could put them in your car, give them to your kids, or even present them to unsuspecting liberal friends! I can see it now:
"Hmm, I really like my cute little lizard animal. So-and-so's birthday is coming up, maybe I'll give her one...now where did Yossarian find that lizard?"
Quick google search...
Gasp of horror...
"OMG! It's...it's...it's a Republican lizard!" *swoons, has to be revived by several pints of Starbucks coffee*
*Awakes to find stuffed lizard still sitting on top of her computer, now reading a VDH book with a sheaf of Charles Krauthammer columns next to it*

I’d like you all to know that despite the intensely humid SoCal heat I have been blogging all day in a three piece Giorgio Armani suit.

All right you guys, what have you done with the real Charles? This is obviously a fraud.

Little do they realize the terrible truth about LFG. You see, “Charles” is really a cigar-smoking reptilian android from the planetoid Aidemydni, who lives in a top secret nitrogen-filled bomb shelter (why doesn’t the nitrogen explode when I smoke? ah ah! that would be telling!) concealed beneath Denver International Airport. Bwa hahaha! Soon the Earth will be mine, and my lizardoid armies will herd the peace activists into brutal repression camps, the better to slaughter them and feast on their gamy buttocks! Bwa hahaha!

Not sure if these has shown up here before, but it seems that Academia's finally starting to feel the heat for its bias:

Academic bias cited at Colorado schools

In a hearing before the General Assembly's Joint Education Committee, students testified or submitted statements about recent incidents in which professors vilified Republicans, called conservative students "Nazis" and other names, and even implied that students' grades would be affected by their political views.

Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds (#130)

He acknowledged that the school is conducting a second investigation into Ms. Meranto's conduct after William Pierce, a Metro student, said that she told students Aug. 23 that only liberals would be able to succeed in her course.

"She said that only those of us on the left were capable of thinking critically. If you do not believe you can think critically, you will not be successful in this class," said Mr. Pierce, who dropped the class because he "did not feel ... that I could be graded fairly in her class."

Mario Nicolais, a University of Colorado law school student, said professor David Hill told his class three weeks ago that "the R in Republican stands for racist," called Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas an "Uncle Tom," and when confronted about such remarks, said "there are plenty of other Nazis like you out there."

What a disgrace. I hope this "professor" is barred from teaching.

Busted, Busted, Busted!

How about a toast to this little snippet:

At question are memos that carry the signature of the late Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, who was the commander of Bush's Texas Air National Guard fighter squadron. They say Killian was under pressure to "sugar coat" Bush's record, and Bush refused a direct order to take a required medical examination and discussed how he could skip drills.
Casting further doubt on the memos, The Dallas Morning News said in a report for its Saturday editions that the officer named in a memo as exerting pressure to "sugar coat" Bush's record had left the Texas Air National Guard 1 1/2 years before the memo was dated

Oh, how much I loathe the left and their little tricks.

Being many generations (although I met my Great Aunt Mary Lydon, who lived in the housing projects between the Columbia and Andrew Square "Red Line" stations before you had the choice whether to go to Ashmont going southbound, and she was from the old country and spoke funny, before she died) removed from the old sod, or whatever, maybe I don't know my men's skirts, but I thought it was the Scottish who wore kilts. I can't say that I myself have been subject to active discrimination by liberal teachers, but I have gone through my World History 1 book. And so far, I'm not impressed. They utterly gloss over Mohammed's (piss be upon him) history, giving the "sanitized" version. And there's a three sentence paragraph about the creation of Israel, depicting it as an example of "neo-colonialism." All in all, it's the standard "feel good" version of history that liberals prefer over the gritty truth.

This CBS thing, the Swiftvets, Kerry in cambodia got me thinking on the state of politics. For decades we have been trying to bring honesty into politics. Watergate really kicked it up a notch. Tons of legislation later we've got hard money, soft money, PACs, 527s etc. Capping the big pile of excrement was the McCain-Feingold-Bush abomination. Politics did not get better. Yet this year the distributed intelligence of blogosphere came into its own. Cambodia was trashed in less than a week. The guard memos didn't last a single day in the sun.

Politicians will start to get the message that they must stay honest (whether they like it or not) or watch their career die a short, agonizing death. The campaigns may get nasty, but the winner's feet will be held to the fire.

Imagine that. Political reform coming from more freedom of speech rather than Draconian finance laws.

Isn't couscous vegetarian?

I have long been under the impression that couscous, in the Middle East, denotes a complete cooked dish, not just the granular pasta. (The pasta itself is vegetarian, just like spaghetti and ramen.)

Moreover, I have been led to believe that a traditional couscous includes goodies like sheep's head, complete with eyeballs, which are "the best part."

I've never traveled in the Middle East -- the closest I've come has been three years in Turkey, where they do pilaf, but not couscous.

And pilaf, by the way, is ordinary rice that is first sauteed in olive oil or butter or animal fat so that the grains have begun to cook before you add the boiling water or broth -- so much tastier than the way most people cook rice in the West.

Sir,

Beyond any reasonable doubt Dan Rather is a willing
accomplice to a fraud. In short, he is a liar, and as CBS has
stood by him and allowed its entire news operation to be
defamed by its association with him, your network, its parent company and its sponsors are not worthy of my patronage. I will make every effort to avoid doing business with your sponsors, and I will program my television remote controls so that your station can not be tuned in on any of my television sets.

In addition I will urge family members and friends to make the same choice to avoid patronizing or in any way supporting your enterprise or anyone who does business with you.

regards,

Teacake!, I've been there, done that. It's all survivable. I've been so down about losing someone I was ready to walk in front of a truck, passively suicidal, not actively, and it took five years to recover. But I did survive, I did make it. I finally met someone else. The honest truth is, sorrow is a good thing, and it passes. There is no 'love of my life', exactly. Love is love. It is not limited, and it is never the one, the only and the last thing.

My life hasn't always gone the way I'd like. But love does return; it's not the same, but love never leaves you.

The best dressed blogger. T-shirt and undies is it. I got up late this morning and decided to work from home (yea... I'm a computer geek, I can do that). So I didn't even bother to shower today.

Same T-shirt and undies I slept in last night. Sitting here typing with a 1/2 pint of Southern Comfort. I had a 1/2 pint earlier, but we got a cool front move in, my drapes were billowing into the room, grabbed my bottle and it hit the floor.

Wife went out around 9:00 mountain time to get a bottle of wine and restock my Southern Comfort.

About 50 degrees here tonight. Maybe I'll take off the T-shirt (wife just commented that MAYBE I should take a shower).

Good work Charles... Rahter's ass look rahter tight tonight on the news.

Charles, my wife and I go off on the motorcycle for the last 4 days and get back to see the world being shaped by yourself and the minions. This morning we saw just a bit of the flap on the tube and when my wife, an executive sectetary to very high level people for many years, saw the th script her comment was "Bullshit, who are they trying to fool?" After looking over todays posts and comments for the last hour, all I can say is Bravo Charles and the Lizirdoid Minions. "Selecta gate" has begun and from what I have seen here it is an event that will make watergate seem like a dripping faucet next to Niagra Falls. Looks to me like Dan Rather is going to pull the roof in on himself and the self confessed war criminal as well as his whole tribe.

Omigod. I was lurking over at the DU watching their dementia on Rathergate, but I'm glad I missed that real, to the bone, deep anti-American ugliness.

They don't really care that 3000 people got murdered by Islamists in NYC. They are just mad that people they despise even more than themselves actually felt sorrow at the loss and don't hold Amerikkka utimately responsible like they do. The contempt permeates the rant like the stink of rotted meat.

I talked about honey vis a vis bees with a NYC vegan. Twit thought you killed the bees to get the honey. How many people actually know how food gets to the table.

Being very pedantic - honey doesn't "come from" bees. It comes from flowers. The bees collect and dry the nectar after mixing in enzymes to break down complex sugars. They store it for the winter. The core of the hive is maintained at about 95F if brood is present and doesn't drop below 70F or so even with outside temperatures down to -40F. The beekeeper only takes what the colony does not need.

Did you hear about the Couscous Speakeasy and Illicit Movie Theater in the Paris Catacombs?

That is far out. There was supposedly a network of "steam tunnels" underneath the University of Virginia that could be accessed by secret passages in the older campus buildings. (I never saw the tunnels!)

When I was a kid in Turkey, my family made several visits to the Cappadocia region, where early Christians had dug out entire underground cities from the soft volcanic pumice.

346 foreign devil  Fri, Sep 10, 2004 9:33:10pm

From ABC's "The Note" in which they do a chronology of the steps from Freeper post to PowerLine to LGF and on of the document stalk. The following quote particularly struck me:

"...The Washington Post 's Dobbs and Allen report that "A senior CBS official, who asked not to be named because CBS managers did not want to go beyond their official statement, named one of the network's sources as retired Maj. Gen. Bobby W. Hodges, the immediate superior of the documents' alleged author, Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian. He said a CBS reporter read the documents to Hodges over the phone and Hodges replied that 'these are the things that Killian had expressed to me at the time.'" LINK

"'These documents represent what Killian not only was putting in memoranda, but was telling other people,' the CBS News official said. 'Journalistically, we've gone several extra miles.'..."
[Link: abcnews.go.com...]

What ABC seems to be saying is that

a) you have a CBS official who want to be nameless;

b) puts ABCs reporter on to the fact that Maj. Gen. Bobby W. Hodges, Lt. Col. Killian's former boss, is CBS' contact for verification;

c) the CBS reporter (who must have had the documents in HIS possession) read them to Maj.Gen. Hodges over the phone and Hodges assented (over the phone) that yes, indeed, this is what Killian had indicated to him many years before were his thoughts on George W. Bush's career;

d) the CBS official (who doesn't want to be identified on paper) says that in addition, in the same conversation over the phone, that Maj. Gen. Hodges indicated that his thoughts about Bush had been communicated in memoranda and verbally to other people. [Note: ABC only has the CBS official's word that Hodges said any of this].

Basically we have CBS suddenly having a clerk with these sensitive documents out of Lt. Col. Jerry Killian's personnel files. Documents that, BTW, both the now deceased Colonels wife and son both agree are unlike him to have written or typed (since he didn't type) and which would have been out of character for him to make and put in the file in the first place.

So CBS comes up with the memos;
CBS comes up with the 'military analyst' Maj. Gen. Hodges;
CBS tells ABC that the General said this and said that about Bush and told other people -- but ABC doesn't hear from the General himself.

CBS is the engine driving these flimsy documents that they either made up or have picked up from some disgruntled Democrat who saw an opportunity to drag up Bush's service record again.

I hope the Democrats lose big time in November -- it will serve them right!

The Weekly Standard examines why CBS would be so gullible as to accept flimsy bona fides such as these memos are, without proper vetting.

"The Hoaxing of CBS"
"Why were they so easily duped?"

[Link: www.weeklystandard.com...]

"A NUMBER OF EXPERTS have now weighed in on the inauthenticity of the documents CBS breathlessly revealed on 60 Minutes earlier this week--documents purportedly typed by the deceased commander of George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard unit in 1972 and 1973, but actually produced on a personal computer using Microsoft Word. I predict--and here I'm going out on a limb 10-feet wide and only an inch off the ground--that it's only a matter of time before CBS admits it was deceived. If there's any honor and professional pride left in the CBS newsroom, they will then expose the party or parties who deceived them..."

This time, the Daily Standard doesn't pull any punches. Let's the chips fall.

Oh when will the mainstream media learn, times they are a changing. The Internet is here. Its funny to watch some of the MSM pull out all the stops in order to defend the memos. They were so certain that this was bush's swift vote controversy. Now it seems that its all a big hoax. Suprisingly some of the MSM cant even ignore the plain the simple fact these documents are a hoax and are actually reporting the truth, even if it helps bush. If this whole half-assed media attack on Bushs ANG record issued from the bowels of the DNC I'll take my hat off to them for its sheer brilliance. It certainly distracted conservative critics from attacking Kerrys statements of record and stole the thunder of the recent Swiftvet ads for the majority of this week. I certainly wouldn't put it past them to hang Dan Rather out to dry or any other media hack who's their erstwhile ally. But CBS has a history of this behavior and I doubt anything will come of it vis a vis sweeping newsroom shakeups, as if that would have any effect on public perceptions of the candidates and election results. Also, by attacking the methods we've repeated the message, regardless of its veracity. I wonder if perception trumps reality. Does a lie embedded have more staying power than a truth eventually revealed? I had thought the whole idea of questioning a candidates military record earned the stink of being "dishonest and dishonorable". To me casting doubts on Bushs entire military service was beneath contempt and earned our silent scorn.

...Rather defined the terms of the discussion, asked the questions, picked the individuals who responded, presumably screened their answers — and basically declared himself innocent.

That is, he stuck in his thumb, pulled out a plum — and said: "What a fine anchor am I."

That probably won't cut it. In the age of the Internet, the truth will out.

Dan Rather can count on that.

Good morning.

An unpleasant anniversery, indeed.

To cheer you up, Another nail in the coffin of CBS

A handwriting expert says the two signatures on purported Texas National Guard memos aired by CBS News this week are not those of President Bush's squadron commander, as asserted by "60 Minutes."
Until now, press scrutiny of the memos supposedly written by the late Lt. Col. Jerry B. Killian focused on the finding that the documents were, in the opinion of experts, produced by computers not yet in use in the early 1970s.
Eugene P. Hussey, a certified forensic document examiner in Washington state, said yesterday there is another flaw in the CBS memos. Mr. Hussey studied the known signatures of Col. Killian on Air Force documents, and two signatures on documents dated 1972 and 1973 that aired on "60 Minutes" Wednesday night.
"It is my limited opinion that Killian did not sign those documents," Mr. Hussey told The Washington Times. He said he uses the phrase "limited opinion" because he does not have the original documents. He, like other experts interviewed by the press, relied on copies of originals first obtained by CBS. The White House then distributed copies of the memos in what is said was the interest of full disclosure.

407 EE  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 2:07:20am

The guy that CBS hired to examine the authenticity of the document was not even aware of the fact that the document was made using a computer -- using Microsoft Word and put in pdf format -- as Charles has shown. He didn't know the difference in looks between such a document and one from an IBM electric typewriter.

Whether he was wearing his pajamas at the time of his inept audit of the document or whether he was wearing a tuxedo is beside the point. He missed the basic fact that the document was computer-generated.

He examined only the signature apparently; that's what CBS asked him to examine and that's all he looked at.

Well if a computer was used for the forgery, couldn't a copy of Killian's signature be scanned into the computer and pasted into the document? What did this pajama-clad or tuxedo-clad "expert" really establish by looking only at whether an actual signature had been scanned and put into the computer-generated document?

He missed the main point: that a computer had been used to generate the document. If he missed that, he might as well have been wearing pajamas for all anybody should care. Why is CBS getting so French , and focusing on fashion, when they are promoting Kerry in their fraudulent schemes, or at least their cover-up of fraud?

408 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 2:09:14am

Lines has already been "debunked" by the Left. They say she's not credible because she *gasp* is a Republican and contributed to the GOP. So, obviously she is too biased to be considered more credible than CBS' phantom experts, who continue to remain nameless.

These are the questions the Left continues to refuse to answer:

- Who are CBS' experts that they stated authenticated the memos?

- Why do these experts continue to refuse to come forward?

- What is the original source of these memos? CBS said they received them through another source who got them from Killian's files, but won't name the source.

- Why are Killian's own wife and son refuting the memos? (Standard Leftist excuse: They're Repukes! That's all of it in a nutshell!)

- How does CBS explain why Maj. Gen. Hodges, once one of the major backers of the memos' authenticity, now refutes the claims that the memos are real? (Without claiming that Rove's goons got to him or that he's a "Repuke.")

- And finally, how does CBS explain that the man suppsedly pressuring Killian to "sugar coat" Bush's report had retired 1 1/2 years before the memo was written?

So far, I've seen no definitive answers for any of those questions from the Left that leave no room for doubt. It's pretty obvious that, having most of their theories debunked, they're grasping at straws.

420 EE  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 3:35:48am

The issue today for this election should concern one overriding thing: under which person, Bush or Kerry, is the country likely to be safer in avoiding a terrorist attack such as occurred 3 years ago today, or an even worse attack.

It is not un-American to consider this question, as Edwards has suggested. It is absolutely stupid to not consider this question, when so much is riding on it.

Kerry has the pre-9/11 attitude of making the war on terror just a court procedure. Instead of involving the full strength of the US in fighting this war, including our intelligence and military capabilities, Kerry would make this essentially an activity of lawyers armed with subpoenas.

He would also try to gut the Patriot Act.

He would base our defense against terrorism, and our offense against terrorism, on what France would approve of. We would need a permission slip from France to defend ourselves.

There is a difference between what our safety would be under Bush and under Kerry, and a voter would be a fool to just put his head in the sand and forget about this difference.

The effort by CBS to twist this election from a consideration of which candidate would better defend the US against terrorism, to some irrelevant stuff seeking to detract from Bush's National Guard service some 30 years ago by CBS's using fraudulent documents, is really shameful.

The question of the credibility of CBS's forgery is relevant to their phony campaign to boost Kerry.

The match between the CBS forgery and Microsoft Word using pdf is excellent, as Charles has shown, so that is the gold standard for comparing any typewritten document to the CBS forgeries.

Every typewriter needs to be compared to this gold standard.

Manual typewriters have the signature that doesn't include proportionate spacing, so they are eliminated as a possibility.

That leaves IBM electric typewriters. But they have the signature, with their proportionate spacing, that they cannot produce good centering of successive lines (such as was obtained in the address used in the CBS forgery). To do centering of successive lines using an IBM electric, first you have to get to the center; then you count the number of characters including spaces and divide by two, and backspace that number of times. If the number of characters is even or if it is odd you will get a different result. Also, with proportionate widths of characters, the letter m will not be of the same width as the letter i, and there will be other differences of widths, so that the result will be very crude. This will be a very poor match to the CBS forgery, compared to the gold standard -- the Microsoft Word document using pdf.

Interesting, the MSM trying to make the memo story go away. They have no appetite for bashing one of their own. Look at this morning's leads on the web:

-Bush's Backers Donate Heavily to Veteran Ads

CNN:
-Cheney clarifies remarks on Kerry and terror

USA Today
-Bush leads on issues, values

FOX
-Bush Noses Ahead, Kerry Slips

CBS carries a combatitive stance
-CBS Stands By Bush-Guard Memos

MSNBC has this below the 'fold'
-CBS stands by Bush Guard service memos

This is a big story. I want to know if these documents are indeed forgeries as they appear. I want to know where CBS got them. I want to know who made them. Was the Kerry campaign involved? The Democratic Party?

This is a big story. It is not proper for it to be ignored. I want CBS to account for itself. Have they done this before? How can I trust them in the future? Are they neutral in this race, or for Kerry?

#438 Luigi:

CBS' 60 Minutes was at the heart of another scandal several years ago. They promised to do a story on 'big Tobacco' (how B.T. boosts the addicting qualities of tobacco in order to keep control of their customers) and after their whistle-blower had given all his information, CBS then pulled the story leaving the scientist/whistleblower high and dry to be persecuted by his former employers in bizarre ways (his family was attacked and harrassed for years). The whole story was so egregious a hugely successful movie was made about it starring Russell Crowe: "The Insider".

At that time, the award-winning Producer of 60 Minutes left the program and CBS in disgust. He was so outraged at what the corporate side of CBS had done to the program. Because the 'Insider' story by the whistleblower would expose something wrong done by a member of the conglomerate of companies which own CBS, CBS chose to pull the story rather than risk upsetting the corporate sponsor. In so doing, they exposed the whistleblower to his bosses, the tobacco company.

444 littleoldlady  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 4:51:49am

Luigi and foreign devil,

[Very big sigh]

Was it one or two weeks ago that CBS did the "Israel/AIPAC/Spy" blood libel? Where's that story? Where are the supposed upcoming arrests?

How soon we forget. But I guess that's the point, isn't it? WE let it slip under the radar; Jew-haters have more ammunition. And CBS seems to have a weekly schedule of "hot storie" designed to increase their pitiful ratings.

445 littleoldlady  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 4:53:37am

"hot stories" is what I meant to type. (Not enough coffee I guess...)

446 JimO  Sat, Sep 11, 2004 4:54:41am

Gents (and ladies):

Concentrate on three evidential words:

CHAIN
OF
CUSTODY

CBS must show that the documents they display were known to be in existence from creation through decades of cold storage to discovery (by whom?) to transfer (via whom?) to CBS.

Since the documents are NOT classified, no laws have been broken by any purported custodians or couriers.

Hence, there is no legal justification for protection through anonymeity.

The only purpose served by keeping secret the names of the sequential custodians, is to allow convenient assumptions (that the chain is legitimate) to go unquestioned -- when in truth, the chain must be PROVEN, not assumed.

The photocopies just 'fell from the sky', Rather is asserting. He hasn't proved anything else, and his lame attempts to LOOK like he has, he just strengthens the impression that the documents HAVE no credible origin.

[Link: www.lileks.com...]

Of course some people are impatient with those who still recall the shock of 9/11; the same people were crowding the message boards of internet sites on the afternoon of the attacks, eager to blame everyone but the hijackers. They hate this nation. In their hearts, they hate humanity. They would rather cheer the perfect devils than come to the aid of a compromised angel.

I'm confused. 3-piece Armani suit? My image is shattered. I always thought you wore armor and chains and one of those pointy viking helmets and had to rest your spiked ball-and-chain down on a black iron anvil to free up your right hand for the mouse. There's just a lot less skull-crushing ferocity in an image of a shy tech-genius in a suit. Between you in a suit and the rest of the bloggers in pajamas, I must say, the image is rather warm-and-fuzzy. Who knew such softies could bring about the long-awaited comeuppance of MSM.

I turn on Fox and Bernard Kerik, NYPD Commissioner is being interviewed talking about the importance of taking the war to the terrorists and being on the offensive.

This is interesting (sorry fot the choppy format): Armitage: Syria responsible for regional terror

US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said that Israel was not being unreasonable in holding Syria partially accountable for the recent suicide bombings in Beersheba given Syria's ties with Hamas and Hizbullah.

Speaking to Egyptian television this week, he said that it is not enough for Syria to kick al-Qaida out of Damascus and leave Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups there. "If you oppose terrorism, you oppose all terrorism," he said. He added that Syria's support for such groups is not in that country's long-term interest.

...

However, Powell said, "We need to see the end of terror. We need to see the consolidation of Palestinian security forces under responsible leadership."

In addition, he said, "We need to have an empowered prime minister, and that requires taking power away from Mr. (Yasser) Arafat and empowering a prime minister so he could act as head of government and get on with the process of reforming the administration of the Palestinian Authority."

...

[Dennis] Ross, who has written a book, "The Missing Peace," about his experiences, said he had never encountered an Arab leader who recognized Israel's right to exist - only that it exists.

Forgive me if someone has posted this before. I have been gone most of the week while the CBS/Dan Blather lie came out wed. night. This article should be shoved into ever LLL'er's face who says CBS told the truth.

Man named in Bush memo left Guard before document was written

AUSTIN, Texas - (KRT) - The man named in a disputed memo as exerting pressure to "sugar coat" President Bush's military record left the Texas Air National Guard a year and a half before the memo was supposedly written, his own service record shows.

An order obtained by The Dallas Morning News shows that Col. Walter "Buck" Staudt was honorably discharged on March 1, 1972. CBS News reported this week that a memo in which Staudt was described as interfering with officers' negative evaluations of Bush's service, was dated Aug. 18, 1973.

That added to mounting questions about the authenticity of documents that seem to suggest Bush sought special favors and did not fulfill his service.

Staudt, who lives in New Braunfels, Texas, did not return calls seeking comment. His discharge paper was among a packet of documents obtained by The Dallas Morning News from official sources during 1999 research into Bush's Guard record.

Surrender of Japan (1945)
On September 2, 1945, Japanese representatives signed the official Instrument of Surrender, prepared by the War Department and approved by President Harry S. Truman. It set out in eight short paragraphs the complete capitulation of Japan. The opening words, "We, acting by command of and in behalf of the Emperor of Japan," signified the importance attached to the Emperor's role by the Americans who drafted the document. The short second paragraph went straight to the heart of the matter: "We hereby proclaim the unconditional surrender to the Allied Powers of the Japanese Imperial General Headquarters and of all Japanese armed forces and all armed forces under Japanese control wherever situated."

That morning, on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese envoys Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and Gen. Yoshijiro Umezu signed their names on the Instrument of Surrender. The time was recorded as 4 minutes past 9 o'clock. Afterward, Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Commander in the Southwest Pacific and Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, also signed. He accepted the Japanese surrender "for the United States, Republic of China, United Kingdom, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, and in the interests of the other United Nations at war with Japan."
