 RetweetRathergate: First, The Smear...

Mon, Sep 27, 2004 at 10:39:48 am PDT

Media Research Center has compiled a selection of quotes from Dan Rather and others about the Killian memo scandal, illustrating beautifully the deep, deep dishonesty and arrogance of CBS News.

‘It is obviously against CBS News standards to be associated with any political agenda.’

That is the funniest thing I've heard in ages.

Danish Embassy in Stockholm vandalised

Two windows in the Danish embassy in Stockholm were smashed this weekend and red paint splashed on the walls in what police said was a protest against Denmark's involvement in Iraq.

A group calling itself Global Intifada took responsibility for the act in a statement sent to Swedish news agency TT, saying the vandalism was intended as a protest "against the Danish government's support of America's imperialistic invasion of Iraq."

A spokesman for the Danish embassy said paint had been thrown through a broken window into the mission's lobby.

Dan Rather, 1994:

"I’d gone off half-cocked, if I’d gotten my facts scrambled, if I’d run with unconfirmed leads, I’d be selling insurance right now."

Dan Rather, 2005:

"Hello, and welcome to Progressive! My name is Dan. How may I help you, sir?"

The Media Research Center does a great job keeping an eye on the media. Day in, day out for the last 11 years. Keep up the good work Brent.

And I thought this was pretty pathetic, from the man that is on the short list to replace Dan, John Roberts:

"First Lady Laura Bush became the first White House insider to publicly doubt their authenticity.”

What a jackass, he categorizes the First Lady as a White House "insider".

I'll bet he's never once in his life referred to Hillary as a White House insider.

as usual, VDH has Rather's number:

That old Egyptian river has got some new passengers floating aimlessly about on it. Last night I channel surfed away from the Oakland-Tampa fiasco and caught a CNBC panel discussion (was that Tina Brown?) and some fat nitwit who called herself a "writer" was bemoaning the bloggers who were probably this minute sitting in "THEIR DAMP BASEMENTS" playing with journalistic fire! Only real writuhs and reportahs have any intelligence and training to deal with issues of the day. The rest are typing funghi!

CBS Lectures Irresponsible Laura

John Roberts: ...in a radio interview, First Lady Laura Bush became the first White House insider to publicly doubt their authenticity.”
Laura Bush: “You know, they probably are altered and they probably are forgeries.”
Roberts: “However, Laura Bush offered no evidence to back up her claim, and CBS News continues to stand by its reporting.”
— CBS Evening News, September 14.

Now they don't want to stand anywhere near that story!

I wish Media Research would have included the cnn street interview of Rather where he arrogantly says, "there will be no investigation, nor should there be." Anytime I feel sympathy for Rather, I just remember that gem.

jooly (#11),

Just for you:

There will be no apology

Bluetick (#10),

It looks like Laura Bush is smarter than the whole CBS News organization.

If what that Colonel is quoted as saying about Bush volunteering for 'Nam is true, it would destroy every detractor Bush has ever had regarding his service during Vietnam. This could be huge.

I wonder if the MSM will pick up on this and investigate it further.

It looks like Laura Bush is smarter than the whole CBS News organization.

That was my point but I don't think I expressed it very well.

The arrogance of CBS really comes through in that article. The MSM just doesn't understand that there are right-minded folks on the internet who will take their quotes, put them in chronological order, and allow us to see for ourselves the lies. Talk about damning them with their own words! I'm a newbie here, but I'm already thinking that politics and elections will never be the same again, thanks to the blogs.

Can anyone tell me if Rather has reported anti-conservative stories in the past, during his long career at c-BS, that depended on "documents?"

I think Rather's tenure at c-BS needs scrutiny and any "documents" he presented need a careful vetting.

16 Geepers  Mon, Sep 27, 2004 10:43:53am

Bluetick (#14),

Talk about damning them with their own words!

It's pretty obvious what the intentions were when you see it spelled out like that isn't it?

The exposure and backlash is something that could have never have happened before the internet blog explosion.

The unbelievable thing is that the MSM is still fighting yesterdays battle, and poorly at that.

...the MSM is still fighting yesterdays battle, and poorly at that.

Exactly. They don't know that their day is over. So what if the MSM has more viewership/readership at the present time? That will change, I'm convinced.

From the collage of Rather's blather at [Link: www.mediaresearch.org...]

Dan Rather defines the Fogosphere:

This is your basic fogging machine, which is set up to cloud the issue, to obscure the truth
— CBS’s Dan Rather as quoted by the New York Observer’s Joe Hagan, September 15.

Of course, Rather's statement was meant as criticism of the Blogosphere. However, presenting fabricated documents isn't exactly representative of the weather in San Diego.

Amazing video! Watch Rather's lip curl in disgust when he says the word "apology". If that doesn't say it all...

22 michaelg  Mon, Sep 27, 2004 11:16:18am

Someone asked how CBS thought they could get away with this. I think the bigger issue is that they have been getting away with forwarding their own agenda for a long time. Only this time they were caught.

23 Observer52  Mon, Sep 27, 2004 11:25:21am

Dan Rather? Reminds me why I haven't watched Over the air broad casts news since Bryant Gumbo...A hottie from the today show... Not since 1980 when he ( Bryant) misrepresented the situation in Iran by saying that the then elected President Reagan position on the hostages would keet them in Iran for years. My satisfaction was watching him on the today show after Reagan was sworn in, the hosages were released in a matter of hours. Bryant was beside himself having to report they were released. As was Dan Rather that night. I realized then, when anything happened that was good for America, the liberal left, hated it. Except when Carter and Clinton would do the right or same thing. Then it became a shining example of Democracy brought to you from your man in the capital.

Yes, now we have the blogosphere and the fogosphere... MSM and the LLL blogs who use hit-and-run tactics (accuse or rebut without facts to back it up) comprise the fogosphere, while the non-left blogs comrpise the true "blogosphere" - a place where political discourse can occur on an equal footing, yet faces the logical and evidentiary scrutiny such debate demands.

"Powerful and extremely well-financed forces are concentrating on questions about the documents because they can’t deny the fundamental truth of the story. If you can’t deny the information, then attack and seek to destroy the credibility of the messenger, the bearer of the information." -- Dan Rather

And Dan identified exactly what he was doing. He could not deny the evidence presented showing that the typography was inconsistent with what was available 30 years ago. He could not deny this information. So he attacked and sought to destroy the credibility of the messengers, the bearers of this information that the documents were forged. He said about these messengers, these bearers of the information: "Powerful and extremely well-financed forces ". That was in order to deny the credibility of the messengers by claiming that they were tied to disreputable people -- that's what he hinted at when he said they were powerful and extremely well-financed.

Later, a CBS spokesman referred to these "powerful and extremely well-financed forces" as people in their pajamas typing on their laptops. That was again an attempt to discredit the sources, but in the opposite direction. Again, a refusal to look at the information, but only to try to discredit the messenger.

Forgive the repetition; this is for newcomers and anyone else who needs a refresher course on THE CBS FRAUD PERPETRATION:

Check THIS LINK out and see if it isn't worth sending to everyone in your address book:

Sorry, SeeBS, even the "story" the phony documents are supposed to be about is phony

Here is yet another example of Rather's dishonesty.
