After each debate, I asked my mother-in-law (another big-Lefty) if she saw the debates. Of course, she had... at which point I'd say, "Didn't Senator Kerry/Edwards look great? He looked sooo handsome."

Well now we have a perfect chance to lampoon the Democratic choice for VP - after all - didn't Kerry already remark on how their side had "better hair"

But don't hold your breath waiting for this gem to make it onto the CBS evening news - its not like Bush reading My Pet Goat for 7 minutes or anything

Its just a pompous trial lawyer fussing with his hair like a lovestruck teenager about to go on HER first date

Nice compact John - does it come in pink?

Yeah, he's vain.

But at least he didn't spit on his comb and then run it through his hair, in a fashion reminiscent of Ghengis Khan Paul Wolfowitz.

That was a bad TV-prep moment.

This "man", and I use that word loosely, can not be vice president.

It was a bit much, but I still feel kinda sorry for the guy. He's got a reasonable expectation this is "private," and we've made it where candidates' appearances are factors in getting our votes. They just pull that one out of their hat when they miss being the center of attention. AIDS is a terrible thing, but now we all know how to avoid getting it -- unlike other diseases that deserve just as much attention, and the sufferer did nothing to bring it on themselves.

He's got a reasonable expectation this is "private," and we've made it where candidates' appearances are factors in getting our votes.

He doesn't have a "reasonable expectation" that this is private; he's sitting in front of a camera. If you watch the video all the way through, you'll see the sound person attaching his mike, and the camera operator testing the zoom.

He's not in a private makeup room, where I agree he would expect privacy; he's on an obvious TV set and the camera is right in front of him. If he didn't see the red light indicating the camera is on, he's a self-absorbed idiot. If he did see the light and acted like this anyway, he's beyond parody.

As for "made it where candidates' appearances are factors in getting our votes," we didn't do that. Remember when Kerry chose Edwards, he publicly stated "we have better hair." He opened this can of hairspray worms.

I will agree, however, that our society (like most societies, unfortunately) is far too attached to looks over substance. It's a sad fact that Lincoln would never be elected today - TV and shallowness would see to that.

One other observation - I've never used as much hairspray in my entire life as the hair girl used on his hair this one time. I'm surprised his hair didn't shatter when he touched it.

To quote that great philosopher, Bugs Bunny: Wotta maroon!

That's funny and very appropriate.
Someone mentioned on LGF last week that Kerry is Herman Munster and Edwards is Eddie Munster.

I believe this is perfect parody material.

Here's how it should start:
I saw a werewolf with a compact mirror in his hand

Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
Werewolves of London

If you hear him howling around your kitchen door
Better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Werewolves of London

He's the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he's been overheard in Mayfair
Better stay away from him
He'll rip your lungs out, Jim
I'd like to meet his tailor
Werewolves of London

Well, I saw John Kerry walking with the Queen
Doing the
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the
I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect
Werewolves of London

Isn't this a bit off topic?

As long as we're off topic, you guys forgot one point.

Not only did these people bring it on themselves, they said it wasn't any of our business what goes on behind bedroom doors. If that is so, why is it our problem to solve?

It should be clear if it wasn't our business, neither is fixing the problem they caused while they were at it.

Big difference is that Reagan got practical use from his nap and I don't see any benefit of perfect hair.

#114 Barbara Skolaut: How many times have you watched a news/politics show where the guest was shown getting their hair/make-up done without their knowledge? Or footage of same released later without their approval? Of course he was clearly in front of a camera, which needed to be adjusted and tested, but that doesn't mean he had to expect everything happening would be available for public consumption before the host said "And now joining us is..."

All parties there were pros, it even looks like Edwards is reviewing some notes while they fidget with his mic and adjust the camera. If he was doing something like the Sunday morning circuit, that means rushing from one studio to the next in a short span of time, necessitating getting multiple things tended to at once on arrival. This kind of thing is a normal occurance that happens all the time. Releasing footage of it is not the norm, and I'm sure there's plenty of pols, pundits and other talking heads who appreciate that they've not been treated in this fashion.

TV show guests are doing the show a favor as much as the are helping themselves. It should go without saying that they ought not have to put up with looking for "gotcha" moments, except maybe during the interview when they know they are supposed to be "on."

I really, really dislike Edwards, but that doesn't mean he didn't get shafted. We rail about our politicians being so plastic and guarded, and then do stuff like this to force them to become even more plastic and guarded. Now that it's out, I don't think it's a terribly bad thing to share and pass around, but it was awful that it was leaked in the first place.

OT: Finally an explanation for why this is NOT President Bush fault!

The Weekly Standard: La Grippe of the Trial Lawyers

The article: [Link: www.weeklystandard.com...]

"JOHN KERRY wasted no time jumping on President George Bush about the unexpected shortage in flu vaccines this year. Why wasn't Bush paying attention? He should have done things differently. And of course Kerry had a "plan" to solve the whole mess.

If Kerry thinks he can solve the flu vaccine problem, he need look no further than his own running mate, trial lawyer John Edwards. Vaccines are the one area of medicine where trial lawyers are almost completely responsible for the problem. No one can plausibly point a finger at insurance companies, drug companies, or doctors. Lawyers have won the vaccine game so completely that nobody wants to play.
...
So why is it that 100 percent of our flu vaccines are now made by two companies in Europe? The answer is simple. Trial lawyers drove the American manufacturers out of the business."

But, according to the story linked to by #116 Artisticulated, this is one of many satellite feeds which go out over the airwaves. Read the story. It's a pre-show satellite feed which can be seen and recorded by anyone with a sattelite dish and the correct frequency and, as someone who's appeared on TV many times, he should know it.

This is probably the best spot to put this one.

Can anyone here authoritatively speak to the degree of reliability of state polls (vs. national)? Things look generally good at the national poll level, although Zogby and NBC have it tied, but the state polls as per realclearpolitics.com are not encouraging. Does anyone know how good the state polls were in 2000?

BTW, the lack of judgment to have even let that be videotaped automatically disquialifies Edwards from being one heartbeat away...God help us if it comes to that.

Thanks.

This best way to judge the polls is the way each campaign is behaving. For example, the Bush team must feel they have a shot at NJ since GWB appeared there yesterday. Meanwhile, the Kerry camp is pulling funding from once thought of battleground states - the latest being Missouri. This is probably a stronger indicator of the internal polling that each camp is doing. The MSM and various polls continue to be very conservative towards Bush momentum. But, there is a clear difference in the campaigns, as the Dems are trying to pull out all of the stops at this point. Plus, as someone else also mentioned, the State polls lag behind the national ones. I agree with those who have predicted a Bush win with 40 states, 300+ elcetoral votes and a 5% margin in the popular vote. Recent history also shows that the polls have underestimated the margin in such examples as the gubernatorial wins by Republicans in 2002, Arnold's landslide last year, and Howard's win a couple of weeks ago.
