No Eulogy for Arafat at LGF

Thu, Nov 11, 2004 at 8:07:44 am PST

As the world leaders shed crocodile tears...

UN Secretary General Kofi Annan praised Arafat’s struggle to win international recognition for the Palestinian cause, as he ordered flags to fly at half-mast at the United Nations, even though the Palestinians only have observer status at the world body.

By signing the 1993 Oslo peace accords, Arafat “took a giant step towards the realization of this vision. It is tragic that he did not live to see it fulfilled.”

French President Jacques Chirac visited the Percy military hospital to bid a final farewell to Arafat, pledging that his country would continue to work to achieve a settlement in the Middle East.

“I have come to bow before president Yasser Arafat and pay him a final homage,” he said after the 25-minute visit.

... let’s remember that in his bloody lifetime, Yasser Arafat was the cause of immense human suffering, a thoroughly corrupt and evil creature who pioneered many of the terrorist tactics destroying lives across the world today.

CAMERA.org has a long list of the atrocities committed by this monster and his cronies: KeyEvents in Yasir Arafat’s Terrorist Career.

And at the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the names of his victims.

As I was watching the touching retrospectives on this EVIL MURDEROUS SCUMBAG on TV last night, I had a vision of bin Laden dying peacefully in a French hospital 20 years from now ...

How have we reached the point that TERRORISTS are legitimized?!

Murderers and terrorists do NOT rest in Peace.

Purgatory's new citizen ought to be sweating good right now...

He had his chance to do SOMETHING in 2000, and preferring anarchy to order...he lost and is dead, and is worthless.

Oh, I mourn somethin' alright. I mourn the fact that the sh*thead died (relatively) peacefully, rather than being atomized into a pink mist by an Israeli Hellfire missile.

I also mourn the fact that there are people in America so deluded as to believe he was anything other than a genocidal despot who deserves utter disgust, rather than any sort of respect.

By signing the 1993 Oslo peace accords, Arafat “took a giant step towards the realization of this vision. It is tragic that he did not live to see it fulfilled.”

That's true. His vision was the eradication of Israel, preferably through the wanton slaughter of every Jew living there. Signing Oslo, going through the process of talking about peace, gave him the blessing to commit genocide with immunity from outside influence. Well, save from all the assistance flowing in to help with the slaughter.

For now, Israel is still alive, as are most of the Jews. That's the "tragedy" that Kofi sees.

It's not a shame that he's dead, it's a shame he managed to live long enough to die from natural causes. He should have taken an Israeli or American 7.62mm rifle bullet between his fishy eyeballs long ago. I remember as a 12 year old watching in horror as the Munich Olympic Massacre unfolded. He was the Godfather of airline hijackings. CAIR and their ilk whine about why Arabs are stereotyped as terrorists-and manage to blame everybody except the one man responsible-Arafat.

29 LarryW2LJ  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:19:01am

The most fitting eulogy is the list of victims listed by the Israeli Dept. of Foreign Affairs. Nothing more need be said.

Astonishing is the fact that the posted list only goes back to September 2000 !!! How long must this list be in reality? There is no stronger proof that the United States should always be a strong ally to Israel.

#9 The Keeper

I most certainly believe Arafat's soul is NOT in Purgatory. There's no chance for his soul to be there - undergoing purification before entering Heaven. This man's soul is most defintiely burning in the eternal fires of Hell.

Did they fly them at half-mast for Reagan, or is that an honor now reserved for Castro?

46 scaramouche  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:28:00am

This is what I wrote today about Arafat:

For whom the bell tolls: John Donne wrote "any man's death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind". Clearly, John Donne had never met Yasser Arafat. The death of this mass-murdering terrorist who robbed from his own people, suffused them with a culture of hate and brought them nothing but decades of misery is a cause for celebration, not sorrow. Unfortunately, the world will now luxuriate in a communal wallow--and don't we all love a good Princess of Wales wallow?--at the passing of this noted "statesman". Flowers will be laid, eulogies will be intoned with great solemnity, and BBC reporter Barbara Plett will no doubt dissolve into a puddle of salty tears. In the days ahead, journalists will labour mightily to tote up Arafat's pluses and minuses as a leader.

I can make it really easy for them. On the plus side, Arafat embodied the hopes of the Palestinian people as they embraced a "replacement nationality" that sought to eliminate and supplant the Jewish state.

On the minus side: same thing.

47 Martel-Sobieski  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:28:46am

Burn in HELL Arafat. You were a fraud from the beginning. A gangster thug, a vile murderer, liar and embezzler.

I hope the Israeli Air Force splashes your plane in the Mediterranean before your rotting corpse even makes it to Cairo.

You deserve to be eaten by the crawling scavengers of the sea, eaten and shit by jackals and vultures. You most assuredly DO NOT deserve a funeral with honors, fake eulogies and crocodile tears and a headstone like a human being.

Your rotten pestilent flesh deserves to be splattered on the street like that of your countless vicitms.

You deserve a spit in hell next to your heroes Hitler, Idi Amin, Pol Pot and mohammed.

May your soul roast in pig shit forever you evil fuck.

Most Sincerely.

49 ibn Abu  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:30:02am

Anyone who feels even the faintest twinge of sadness to hear of this shitbag's death is utterly without moral compass. This is a mass murderer, the father of modern terrorism. He differs from Hitler only in the resources that were available to him and the ability of his victims to fight back.
There is NO downside to his demise, except that it didn't happen at the end of a rope after a lawful trial- and that is a moral failing of the world, which instead rewarded his lifetime of sociopathy, violence and murder with the now-worthless Nobel Peace Prize.

Sooner or later, we are going to have to stop all the PC crap and deal with what is at hand...WWIII...

The UN is WORTHLESS, and it needs to be stopped as much as the Muslim terrorists do. Now. Right now. Right freaking now.

Bush won. America was blessed. Leftists are going nuts and killing themselves. Arafish bites the big one, AND I'm eating Chinese( Sesame chicken) for lunch. What a wonderful day, week, month, year, and life this is.

Now, if we can just kill a few thousand more "insurgents", nuke Iran to smithereens, and make Syria cower and surrender. Talk China into becoming a rep. republic, send Arafish's followers to Iraq and turn North Korea into another Afganistan...it'll be a terriffic world. Oh, and if I could sock Barbara Stupidstan in the jaw, too. That'd be sweet. What a leftist tool she is... geesh.

54 amir  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:32:48am

Arye Eldad said something like this today (oaraphrased and from memory)

Yasser Arafat: Creator of the Palestinian people. He created them in his image. Murderer, Terrorist and Liar.

55 ibn Abu  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:33:47am

The chief of Intelligence in Communist Romania said after his dealings with arafat: "I never saw so much cleverness, blood and filth in one man". He added that after meeting him, he "wanted to take a shower".

A better epitaph than St. George's "God bless his soul"

60 Renna  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:36:37am
(The 1908 Olympic Games) began almost immediately, when the U.S. delegation noticed that there was no American flag among the national flags decorating the stadium for the opening ceremonies. U.S. flag bearer and discus champion Martin Sheridan responded by refusing to dip the Stars and Stripes when he passed King Edward VII's box in the parade of athletes. “This flag dips to no earthly king,” Sheridan said. And it hasn't since.

There is precedence for the US flag not doing what other flags do.

Wait a minute ... that coughy anus can't order an American flag to fly at half-mast!

Here's hoping ...

For a nation wide lowering of flags, yes it has to come from the prez. Technically your not supposed to place a flag at half-mast unless the Prez order the country to, but most states put flags at half mast in that state to honor certain dignitaries and such.

63 scaramouche  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:37:20am

In "honor" of Arafat's death, I am reprising the funeral dirge to be sung at his funeral by Sir Elton John (with thanks to Occasional Reader):

Goodbye, Arafish,
Just because we knew you so well
We're glad you're shuffling off
Down to the jaws of Hell.
You and your red binder
Chock full of those strategems
To use on Jews
In the Zionist Entity.
And it seems to me, you lived your life
Like a JEW-HATING MURDEROUS BLOOD-DRENCHED TERRORIST SWINE
In the winnnd.
Always knowing who to sing to
To keep those Eurodollars flowin' in.
Should have left you in Tunisia
Ah, but we such dumb Yids.
We fell for Oslo offers
Then you blew up our kids.

64 Luigi  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:38:24am

I'm afraid Arafat's death may create more problems than it solves. There is a reason he has been allowed to live so long. I fear that reason is the Israelis saw him as their best hope against the establishment of a Pal state.

Already the pressure is building on Israel to make nice with the new 'leadership'. Even on Fox this morning Steve Ducy (sp?) remarked Israel no longer has "any excuse" not to deal with the Pals.

Realistically, the chance of there being a peace-loving Pal state ready to be a good neighbor with Israel is slim to none. The Pals have raised -- and are raising -- their kids to exclude that possibility.

The Pals don't want peace. They want Israel.

Peace is a pretty picture. It hasn't just been Arafat holding that back. It is the population he has raised. Unless the new 'leaders' wish to, and are able to, undo a culture of hatred, violence and racist anti-semitism, there will be more war and there should be more war.

#55 ibn Abu: Give me a break. Since Bush took office, Arafat had gone from a beloved guest in the White House and a "partner for peace," to an untrustworthy joke living in ruins with his authority being eroded by American influence. If an American president isn't going to curse out a leader while he's alive, he's not going to be cowardly and do so after his death, whether that's what you want or not.

Above all other leaders in the world save arguably Sharon, Bush showed not only with words but with actions that Arafat was too vile even for leading the Jordyptians. With 95% of the rest of the world leaders either indifferent to Arafat, or supportive of him, it takes a lot of guts to mouth off against one of the best we've got.

72 Clio  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 6:45:06am

So much breast-beating. There are some real positive things attached to the Fish's death. We should remember that Arafat made many allies, all who would like to see the end of Israel and the end of democracy in the middle east...and elsewhere. As we learn who his friends and supporters are, we begin to see that people throughout the world are getting fed up with terrorists and their abettors. They are "coming out."

When Bush was getting bashed by the Hollywood crowd, it made many more Americans angry. Especially so to see their so-called celluloid heroes showing such disrespect for America and our values. Bush won and now the democrats who opposed the war on terro are going through a lot of soul-searching. Support for the War is growing, as a result.

So, let's quietly celebrate the death of the Fish. Watch to see who shows their love for him. Jimmy Carter, you're number one on my list. Kofi, you're always number two. Jacques, there are no words for you and your buddy Gerhardt. The list grows. The sun rises.

Israel is smart enough to say that they will negotiate peace with any "palestinian leader" serious about peace. First of all, none are. Second, there will not emerge any "palestinian leader" who has staying power for a long long time.

I predict a "thinning of the heard" in the Pal territories. Mafia-style leadership changes followed by years of chaos and despair. The Pali civil war begins.

I hope our Jewish readers won't be offended if a post a bit of Christian scripture that I feel describes Arafat and his new surroundings (as the majority of his victims were Jewish). (Mark, Chapter 9)

42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea. 43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

I suspect Arafat is already in Gehenna, where the fires never go out and the worms will devour his flesh for eternity.

Bush's failure to make a speech condemning Arafat and expressing the American peoples' sincere wish that he be burning in hell is one of the great moral failures of his administration.

Bush has soldiers in harm's way. No way is he going to inflame the situation and give the muckrackers in Iraq something else to kill for. Going on record with a quote and a soundbyte would do just that. Bush knows better, and he's proven adept at biding his time.

Looks like the civil war among the troglodytes is just starting:

Some 100 Fatah activists demonstrated outside Arafat's compound in Ramallah on Wednesday, chanting slogans against PLO Secretary-General Mahmoud Abbas and former security minister Muhammad Dahlan, condemning them as U.S. "agents."

"Dahlan, hey, hey, you are an agent of the CIA," the protesters shouted.

One of the demonstration's leaders, Fadi, said the protest was aimed at sending a message to Abbas and Dahlan that the Palestinians won't allow them to succeed Arafat.

Fatah leaflets distributed in the West Bank called on Palestinians to "liquidate all those involved in the plot to poison Arafat, who are most likely Israeli and American agents."

Link

And

Farouk Kaddoumi, head of the PLO's political department, challenged the emerging Palestinian leadership of Mahmoud Abbas and Ahmed Qurei on Wednesday.

"Anyone who thinks that I have abdicated my authority is mistaken," said Kaddoumi, one of the founders of Fatah, who is known to have many supporters both on Fatah's Central Committee and among Fatah activists in the territories.

Kaddoumi, who did not return to the territories in 1993 because he opposed the Oslo Accords, said he thought Fatah, the main PLO faction, should wage guerrilla warfare against Israel.

He forced his cause onto the world stage alright; murder and terrorism is pretty coercive (hope I spelled that right). And his "dream" was more like a hellish, bloody nightmare.

Arafat is responsible for the deaths of thousands of Israelis and Palestinians. No tears should be shed for this coldhearted monster. Hopefully now we can move toward real peace unobstructed by Arafat. Unfortunately, a whole generation of Palestinians has been raised to hate Jews, all under his auspices. How do you reverse the damage that he caused? How does one praise a person who has laid the ground for disaster?

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Tens of thousands of Palestinians rushed into Gaza streets to mourn Yasser Arafat Thursday as others in the West Bank reacted with tears and tributes. Israel responded by sealing the borders of Palestinian territories.

The Palestinians in Gaza clutched flags and his photograph and waved the trademark headscarf of the leader considered the national patriarch.

Black smoke from burning tires rose across the Gaza Strip. Dozens of children ran through the streets, many promising to carry out his legacy.

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, Palestinian flags at Arafat's battered compound were lowered to half staff. Television broadcast excerpts from the Quran with a picture of Arafat in the background.

Israel closed the West Bank and Gaza Strip borders and sent troop reinforcements to the areas, while beefing up security at Jewish settlements amid concern over possible Palestinian rioting in the coming days.

"The Israeli Defense Forces are deploying to allow a dignified funeral ceremony for chairman Arafat," an army statement said.

Palestinian Cabinet minister Saeb Erekat told The Associated Press that the parliament speaker, Rauhi Fattouh, will be sworn in as Palestinian Authority president in place of Arafat in the coming hours.

Yasser Abed Rabbo, a top Arafat aide, said Arafat would be buried on Saturday in Ramallah in what he called a "national day of farewell."

A memorial service was to be held in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday.

Palestinian militant groups Hamas and Islamic jihad, Arafat's main political rivals, expressed sorrow and paid tribute.

Sami Abu Zuhri, Hamas's spokesman in Gaza, called on the group's supporters to honor Arafat and work toward national unity.

"We lost by his death one of our great symbols and one of the main focuses of our national struggle and identity," Abu Zuhri told The Associated Press.

Islamic Jihad spokesman in Gaza Nafez Azzam said "with hearts full of belief in God's will we mourn President Yasser Arafat who was a great leader for the Palestinian people."

In the Jebaliya refugee camp, Gaza's largest, university students and supporters of Arafat's Fatah movement gathered in shock and sadness after learning of his death in a Paris hospital.

"Yasser Arafat is inside in our hearts - in the hearts of the real nation of Palestine," said Amar Muheisen, 22, from Gaza City as he beat his chest with his fists. "Yasser Arafat will never die."

Palestinians huddled around radios on street corners as loudspeakers from mosques amplified verses from the Quran. Loudspeakers mounted on trucks blared Arafat's most famous quotes.

Gunmen fired into the air - some only 500 yards from Jewish settlements. No clashes were reported amid a mood more of grief than outrage.

Children, already out of school for a Muslim holiday, ran through the streets, swept up in the frenzy.

One 14-year old named Ali, who refused to give his last name, wrapped a fist around a photograph of the late leader.

"He said we will raise the Palestinian flag in Jerusalem - and we will."

Thank you for doing your part-and it is a huge part-in making sure that people remember. Every name on this list represents a whole world collapsed, a beautiful soul obliterated into the protection of heaven, a parent's life crushed-siblings, wives and children living a life without one of their own limbs essentially.

I disagree. People need to be informed. Many of us know what Arafat did. The LGF comments are brilliant and informed. Many more people are getting exposed to the internet and finding out that the MSM are writing misleading news stories. The values of the MSM are lousy, anti-democratic, and hypocritcal.

It's just important to take note of those in the news who have praise for the Fish. The bloggers and especially LGF can be a great service to the uninformed. Take heart. Arafat is dead and there is hope.

107 On the Mark  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 7:14:17am

Today, the day after Yasser Arafat's "official" death, I find myself asking, "what kind of an insane Orwellian world do we live in?" Last night watching the news, I saw Arafat referred to in many ways. Among them he was called "the man who brought the Palestinian cause to the world's attention," "Nobel Peace Prize winner," and "great statesman."

As I scanned the channels on the satellite, and the various mainstream media sites on the web, I was astounded that no one was focusing on the decades long campaign of terror and the murder of innocents around the world in which Yasser Arafat had a hand. No one referred to him as a "murderer," "terrorist," or "criminal," even though all of those allegations have been proven factual time and time again. At worst, reporters talked about "allegations of terror" or allegations of "financial misdeeds."

History is being rewritten by the Arafat apologists and cover-up artists (among them the American media) as you read this.

What a joke. Read Safire's column today. Arafat was the reason it was never fulfilled. The Israeli's made him an offer that only a maniac would have turned down, and he turned it down.

Well, at least the son of a *** is dead. During this entire farce, I kept looking at the news saying, "Is this guy not dead yet?! Yasser, do the world a favor and kick the bucket already!" I even entertained the idea of assisted suicide for Yasser just so it would end.
< Dr. Kervokian, Dr. Kervokian please come to ward 2 >
I did get a kick about the fact that the Israelis were planning his funeral before he even bought the farm and how the PLO whined about how 'insensitive' that was. Heh heh.
Come to think of it, the UN, in this respect at least, is like Yasser. Think about it. People were like this about him: "Is he dead?" "Oh, no! He's alive and might recover!" "He's dead, isn't he?" "Uh, well maybe yes, maybe no" "OK, he's dead, then" "I never said that!"
Which is pretty much what a lot of people seem to be like about the UN: "When it comes to the War on Terror, is it for all intents and purposes, 'dead'?" "Oh no...

Fidel Castro?

If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, then your morals and ethics are in question and you're in no position to criticize our celebrating the death of one of history's monsters.

Whether it was Annan's signal failure to help the hundreds of thousands of innocent souls who were murdered in Rwanda, or his total silence in the face of rampant financial corruption at the UN and systematic rape carried out by UN troops, he has proven himself to be an individual imbued with enormous wickedness. How appropriate that such a person should be the head of an organization like the United Nations.

139 cybermonk  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 7:40:05am

Here is a list of the "heir apparents" of this terrorist organization. Doesn't look too good if these degenerates are all the PA has to offer.

MAHMUD ABBAS owes his prominence to the fact that he co-founded the Fatah terror groups with Arafat. He wrote his PhD dissertation and later a bestselling book explaining why the Holocaust is a hoax. He has planned and overseen terrorist attacks for the past several decades, including the latest four year old Palestinian terror war.

AHMED QUREI also co-founded the Fatah terror group with Arafat. He has been the chief PLO money man for the past three decades. He has blackmailed the international community into contributing billions of dollars in aid to the PLO. He continues to overtly support and applaud terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians, and as recently as September he has made open calls for terrorists to murder civilians.

MUHAMMED DAHLAN is a favorite of Israel and American policy makers alike. He is one of the architects of the current terror war. In 1994, Arafat placed him in charge of coordinating activities with Hamas. Dahlan's militia in Gaza has taken an active role in carrying out attacks against Israeli civilians, including the infamous bombing of an Israeli school bus in November 2000, in which three people were murdered and a half dozen school children lost their legs and arms. He is active in weapon smuggling to Gaza and in frequent terror attacks.

JIBRIL RAJOUB is Dahlan's counterpart and rival in the West Bank from 1994 to 2000. Rajoub's men take an active role in carrying out terror attacks in Israel while they still retained their salaries from Arafat.

Don't do that! Take notes on who says what. It's very important to identify the enemy. They've been hidden for a long time. When the shooting starts (the Pali civil war), and it spills over to other countries, you'll want to remember who helped the terrorists. We'll all need to remember.

Failed? Hardly.

Whatever you think of Arafat, he was smart. He was smart enough to muscle his way to the front of the Palestinians (faint praise, I know), which was a cause he knew he could pimp for his own purposes. He knew what it took to get attention: kill people. And he knew how to get the all-too-willing MSM to eat out of his hand. Hell, they're doing it even after his death. He knew how to bilk anyone with money. He screwed the UN, Europe and the US out of untold millions, and he screwed the Palestinians out of the very same money, while, at the same time, remained as popular with them as anyone could be.

Of course he turned down the offer in 2000. That would lead to some small measure of accountability, thus threatening the gravy train. Not only that, he knew a Palestinian state would fail magnificently. He would probably be out of a job at some point as well. He could go much farther and make more money playing the victim. So that's what he did.

Osama bin Laden wishes he was as good at terrorism and PR as Arafat was. Basically what Arafat was able to do was waltz into the international cocktail party, pinch off a loaf in the punch bowl, and get out of there with a standing ovation. Sure he's scum, but he's no dummy.

Instead they get some mid level official and Jimmy Carter. Bill Clinton can't get off his hiney and go too?? He seemed to like that man a lot, enough to bet Middle East politics on him anyway.

He still thinks, he will be released so that he can take Arafart's place and be the one who defeats the Jews. May he rot in prison, he should have been hung, that may yet be his reward.

As for that bitch Suha, I doubt seriously she will last until 2005. I see her having an 'unfortunate' accident in the near future. No great loss.

Reactions To The Death of The Godfather of Terrorism

Hamas: Israel responsible for Arafat demise;
Sharon: terms death as ''historic turning point''

The MiddleEast Gateway--Al Bawaba.com

W's reaction:

"We express our condolences to the Palestinian people,... For the Palestinian people, we hope that the future will bring peace and the fulfillment of their aspirations for an independent, democratic Palestine that is at peace with its neighbors."

Israeli Justice Minister Lapid says it best:

Among Israelis, however, he was known as a terrorist, and his death was greeted with relief.

"I hated him in a non-personal way, but rather in a deep way of a man who led the system of terror in the world that even al-Qaida is built on," said Yosef Lapid, Israeli justice minister. "I hated him not only for the sorrow he caused the Jews but for the sorrow and destruction he caused for the Palestinians."

French officials who have been following Yasser Arafat's treatment were astonished to discover that Suha Arafat's constant companion and financial adviser was none other than Pierre Rizk, who headed the intelligence service of the Phalange during the Lebanese civil war and was in close personal contact with the guerrilla group responsible for the massacre at the Sabra and Shatila refugee camp in 1982.

Seeing the name of your brother-in-law (alav hasholom) on a list of terrorist victims is a painful personal reminder of his murder. But it is also a stark reminder that his death is linked to the millions of other Jews throughout history who were also killed because an enemy could not come to terms with the fact of their existence. Sadly, many of those names can never and will never be known.

One point which has not been mentioned here or in the MSM is the true irrelevancy of this guy's death. They're all speaking that now this "impediment" is out of the way, the Paleonazis can press on for peace.

Did we not learn our lessions 60 years ago? Hitler no more held control of the German people than Arafish held control of his. The death of a death cult leader does not mean that the cult suddenly reforms - though I would encourage the Paleonazis to follow Jim Jones' lead.

The fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of Paleos want to kill Jews and destroy Israel. Let me repeat that: The overwhelming majority of Paleos want to kill Jews and destroy Israel.

Hamas and IJ have never been more popular. The Paleonazi kids continue to be inculcated with hatred and turned into jihaddis.

Palestinian refugees rally in the streets

Refugees!? The media are at it again. Bastards.

Palestinian refugees took to the streets of the Arab world Thursday to mourn Yasser Arafat, firing shots into the air, burning American and Israeli flags, and shedding tears for the man who was the symbol of their struggle for statehood. In a Jordanian camp, barefoot boys brandished toy machine guns.
In the Rashidieh refugee camp near the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, demonstrators shouted "Death to Israel!" — a rallying cry for Palestinians who blame the Jewish state for thwarting their national aspirations.

At Ein el-Hilweh, near the southern city of Sidon, demonstrators burned tires and fired shots in the air to express frustration and sadness. Later, crowds swelled the narrow streets, waving Arafat's pictures and chanting: "Our soul and blood, we sacrifice for you."

The crowd, which later burned and trampled three Israeli flags and an American one, was led by children and women. They carried a mock coffin draped in the Palestinian flag and Arafat's pictures as they circled their camp. Young boys, some barefoot, carried toy AK-47s.

Jordan, which has the largest concentration of Palestinian refugees outside the West Bank and Gaza Strip, declared Thursday a national holiday, the first of three days of mourning. Government offices and schools were closed, a move that allowed more participation in pro-Arafat gatherings.

. Picture Yasser in his new home:

' We can conceive but little of the matter; but to help your conception, imagine yourself to be cast into a fiery oven, or a great furnace, where your pain would be as much greater than that occasioned by accidentally touching a coal of fire, as the heat is greater.

Imagine also that your body were to lie there for a quarter of an hour, full of fire, and all the while full of quick sense; what horror would you feel at the entrance of such a furnace! and how long would that quarter of an hour seem to you!

And after you had endured it for one minute, how overbearing would it be to you to think that you had to endure the other fourteen!

But what would be the effect on your soul, if you knew you must lie there enduring that torment to the full for twenty-four hours...for a whole year...for a thousand years!

Oh, then, how would your hearts sink, if you knew, that you must bear it forever and ever! that there would be no end! that after millions of millions of ages, your torment would be no nearer to an end, and that you never, never should be delivered!

But your torment in hell will be immensely greater than this illustration represents. '

Vatican: Arafat a leader of 'great charisma'

---
Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST Nov. 11, 2004

---

The Vatican offered its condolences Thursday on the death of Yasser Arafat, calling him a leader of "great charisma" and expressing hope that the time had come for Israel and the Palestinians to live in peace, in two independent states.

Pope John Paul II has long supported Palestinian rights to a homeland and stood by Arafat when Israel and the United States considered him a terrorist or an ineffectual or unreliable peace partner.

The Vatican "joins the grief of the Palestinian people over the death of Yasser Arafat," Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said.

Arafat was "a leader of great charisma who loved his people and sought to guide them toward national independence," Navarro-Valls said.
"May God in his pity receive the soul of (Arafat) and concede peace to the Holy Land with two independent and sovereign states, wholly reconciled," he said.

John Paul received Arafat for the first time in 1982 amid protests from Israel and the worldwide Jewish community. Since that Vatican audience, the two men have met another 10 times.

The pope made his long-sought pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 2000, just a few months before the Palestinian uprising that followed the breakdown in the Camp David peace talks.

In a stop in Bethlehem, the pope kissed a golden bowl of Palestinian soil - one of several gestures the Palestinians saw as recognition of their dreams for statehood. As Arafat looked on, the pontiff proclaimed Palestinians' "natural right to a homeland."

The Vatican maintains what it calls "relations of a special nature" with the Palestine Liberation Organization. Under John Paul, the Vatican established full diplomatic relations with Israel.

In the summer of 1972, I was the nuclear launch control officer for a 'live' Pershing Missile site in southern Bavaria, Germany. On duty, 24/7 with boredom being the norm of the day, we looked forward to viewing the Munich Olympics on German Television. Needless to say, it turned to days of horror for all of us as we watched the Israeli athletes hostage/massacre events play out to their tragic end. Things became a 'little tense' in the nuclear missile business at that point, as the world once again moved closer to a crisis nobody really wanted...fortunately, more sane minds prevailed and we downgraded our 'readiness' level. The less sane Yasser Arafat and the PLO became household names for all of us that remember...those that forgot, awarded him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994...
Yes, I celebrate his passing...but, I hold little hope that there will ever be a peaceful resolution to the issue of a Palestinian state..those that believe that this will be an opportunity will be sadly disappointed over time. It only takes one truly radical 'martyr' to bring the region back to its revolutionary roots.

Massive Carbomb Rocks Baghdad

FALLUJA, Iraq (Reuters) - U.S. troops are fighting to crush resistance in the Iraqi city of Falluja but rebels have hit back with an armed rampage in Mosul and a car bomb that killed 17 people in a crowded Baghdad street.

Marines met little opposition in the former insurgent stronghold of Jolan, in northwest Falluja, where guerrillas fired only one or two mortar rounds as tanks pushed through alleys, according to a Reuters reporter at the scene on Thursday.

But a huge explosion erupted in the district after dark, sending a fireball into the sky, the reporter said.

And Marines had to call in four air strikes after taking heavy fire at their headquarters in central Falluja, the BBC reported. Its correspondent with Marines said a Marine rifle company had come under continuous fire when it pushed out of the base into the city on a house-to-house search for insurgents.

Jolan, a stronghold for Saddam Hussein loyalists, had seen some of the fiercest fighting of this week's U.S.-led offensive in the Sunni Muslim city, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad.

"Things are going, I think, as planned. We've got about 70 percent of the city under control," U.S. General Richard Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CBS television.

"There have been hundreds and hundreds of insurgents who have been either killed or captured," he said.

But rebels managed to shoot down two U.S. Cobra helicopters near Falluja, U.S. military sources cited by Al Arabiya television said on Thursday. It gave no details.

The Falluja assault has provoked an upsurge in violence elsewhere in Iraq, as happened in April during an earlier failed U.S. attempt to subdue the country's most rebellious city.

The late morning car bomb that killed 17 people in central Baghdad also wounded at least 20, the police source said.

A Reuters reporter saw four bodies in burned-out cars after the blast near a police patrol in a busy street just off Nasr Square. The bomb devastated a nearby building and littered the street with twisted metal and glass from shattered shop windows.

And while U.S.-led troops fought for the upper hand in Falluja, insurgents in the northern city of Mosul set police stations ablaze, stole weapons and brazenly roamed the streets.

Residents said Iraq's third largest city seemed to slide out of control as grenade blasts and gunfire rang through empty streets and smoke billowed from two burning police stations.

Rebels attacked Iraqi national guards controlling a bridge in the city centre, killing five of them, witnesses said.

"REALLY CRAZY"

A cameraman for Reuters filmed gunmen raiding weapons and flak jackets from a police station before setting it on fire.

"It's crazy, really, really crazy," said Abdallah Fathi, a resident who witnessed one police station attack.

The U.S. military issued a statement admitting that local security forces had been overrun in several areas and said local authorities were doing what they could to restore order.

A photographer working for Reuters was shot in the leg and taken to hospital. Doctors said one civilian had been killed and at least 25 wounded in the past two days of fighting.

Violence has worsened in Mosul, a strongly nationalist city of three million people, over the past year, but residents said the chaos of the past two days had broken new ground.

Apparently responding to the Falluja offensive, insurgents have staged attacks this week in the Sunni towns and cities of Samarra, Baiji, Baquba, Tikrit, Ramadi and parts of Baghdad.

Six national guards were killed near Tikrit, Saddam's home town, by a roadside bomb on Wednesday night, witnesses said.

In Jordan's largest refugee camp of Baqaa, 2,000 angry Palestinians poured into the dusty alleyways, waving black flags and shouting: "We will return to Palestine!"

The crowd, which later burned and trampled three Israeli flags and an American one, was led by children and women. They carried a mock coffin draped in the Palestinian flag and Arafat's pictures as they circled their camp. Young boys, some barefoot, carried toy AK-47s.

Now my mom would buy me shoes before paying for a
toy gun, but in Jordan...

ABC makes me want to puke.

The Fallujah campaign has also sent a stream of American wounded to the military's main hospital in Europe. Planes carrying just over 100 bloodied and broken troops were arriving Thursday at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, a day after 64 others were brought in.

Broken? Broken?

Wounded, yes. Injured, sure. Maimed, even. But broken?

I guess they're still not as "broken" as they'd be if their planes arrived at Landstuhl, what with it being a hospital and not an airport. I imagine they'd land a lot easier at Ramstein, the air base up the road a bit.

But who needs facts when you've got hyperbole?

CJC comments on death of Arafat

OTTAWA – Ed Morgan, Canadian Jewish Congress national president issued the following statement:

"With the passing of the Palestinian Authority's leader, Canadian Jewish Congress shares with Palestinian Canadians their hopes for a future of peace, security and independence for Palestinians and Israelis alike.”

“Reflecting on Yasser Arafat's legacy, we note that while he put the cause of the Palestinian people on the map of political causes, he was incapable of putting a Palestinian state on the map of states. We hope and pray, at this time of transition, that the new Palestinian leadership that emerges will reject violence and be imbued with the necessary courage to pursue the ‘peace of the brave.'”

The Godfather of Terrorism's Final Repose: A Dump

From the article minus the Bull5hit:

The workmen started clearing the ground where Yasser Arafat's body is to be buried the day before his death was announced.

reality:

It was necessary to clear an area covered by squashed and tangled vehicles left at his Muqata compound ...

and the view:

They dug a hole about two metres deep, five metres long and two metres wide, carting off the earth to another corner of the Muqata, where the other debris had already been piled up...
From here we could not only see all of the compound, but also half of Ramallah - with its square sand-coloured buildings and black plumes of smoke from burning tyres

the hole:

...a concrete sarcophagus had been lowered in, ready to receive the leader's body tomorrow.

still pushing the temple mount:

Apparently Mr Arafat's casket is be encased in sand - so he can be reburied in Jerusalem at some time in the future, which Israel will not allow at the moment.

fear of the IDF his burial legacy:

Before today dozens of crude anti-helicopter devices - blue barrels filled with concrete holding upright 3-metre-long metal tubes - had been scattered throughout the area to prevent an Israeli snatch-squad from grabbing Mr Arafat and taking him off to Gaza or to exile

the path to his hole in the sand:

The barrels have now been lined up in two rows to make a rather sorry ceremonial walkway leading to another Muqata building, the conference hall where Arafat's body will be taken after its arrival from Egypt tomorrow.

A Sorry End For A Sorry Individual

A propos the possibility of Arafat dying of AIDS, I asked one of our technicians who had worked extensively in the private sector of laboratory medicine in London if HIV positivity was common in Islamic countries. She replied that she thought it was very common indeed, especially in the Arab world; the wealthy tend to come to the West to be tested and treated because of the stigma attached to homosexuality, particularly passive. So I guess that AIDS is a big problem in the ME, but completely swept under the carpet. I spoke to an Egyptian (Coptic) doctor and he confirmed this. What happens to the poor I don't know; probably they just rot. Islam has a big thing about shame (and a very small thing about truth.)

I posted this on the othet thread today---Be wary!
Solana is wasting no time to exploit the power vacuum caused by Arafat's death.
This will not be to Israel's benefit!

EU Starts Push for Mideast Peace

The EU began to push forward Mideast peace efforts as soon as Yasser Arafat’s death was announced today

“Contacts have started with the Palestinians and the Israelis, it is too early to see what will be the next step,” EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said.“The European Union is going to work without delay to see how we can give an impulse to the peace process.”

After contacts overnight with international leaders, Solana said in Brussels that he found consensus on the need for a fresh push for peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We will do all we can to accelerate the peace process,” he said. “I have no doubt that the international community as a whole has to make an effort to bring to an end the suffering for the people of Palestine.”

Solana was flying to Cairo today for Arafat’s funeral. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is expected to represent Britain.

He and other leading EU officials pledged support to the Palestinian Authority as it seeks to make the transition to a new post-Arafat leadership.

In the wake of Arafat’s death, EU officials said the international community should work with increased determination to revive the “road map” peace plan which envisions an end to violence and the creation of a Palestinian state.

("pre-1967 borders")

“The best tribute to President Arafat’s memory will be to intensify our efforts to establish a peaceful and viable state of Palestine as foreseen by the road map,” Solana said.

The stalled peace plan is sponsored by the EU, the US, Russia and the UN

I suppose we shouldn't have never expected them to mention that this corpse was a terrorist murdering fiend during his time on earth...

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 11/11/04) - A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today offered its condolences to the Palestinian people
on the death of President Yasser Arafat.

*** also said
that U.S. support for the Palestinian people's right to justice and freedom from occupation is an essential prerequisite for peace in the Middle East
and is a key factor in winning the war on terror.

In its statement, *** *** said:

"*** offers it sincere condolences to the Palestinian people on the death of President Yasser Arafat. We come from God and to God we return.

"President Arafat was the embodiment of the Palestinian struggle for justice and freedom. His death should prompt all parties to the Middle East conflict to reinvigorate any efforts that could lead to peace with justice in the region. In particular, the United States must reexamine its Middle Eastern policy and refocus on helping to free the Palestinian people from
Israeli occupation.

"As many objective observers have stated, the United States' seeming indifference to the plight of the Palestinian people is one of the main causes for anti-American feeling in the Muslim world. A just resolution to the Middle East conflict would be a key factor in winning the war on terror. It is in America's interest to promote freedom for all people, including the Palestinians."

Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.

SUGGESTIONS: PUT IT INTO "LA WEEKLY" STACKS, OR INDIVIDUAL "LA WEEKLYS", DROP IT OFF @ BUS STOPS, RESTAURANTS, MOVIE THEATRES, HAND IT OUT ON 3RD STREET, BRING IT ALONG EVERYWHERE YOU GO & LEAVE ONE COPY OF IT THERE, "POST" IT TO EVERY WEBSITE YOU CAN FIND, ETC.

Newborn Twins Named Yasser and Arafat (AP)
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - When Safra Hassan went into labor Thursday, she told her husband she wanted to name their child Yasser after Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat (news - web sites), who died hours earlier.

It was only in the delivery room at Gaza's Shifa Hospital that Hassan, 32, discovered she was carrying twin boys.

"I looked at my husband and I said, we will call them Yasser and Arafat," she told The Associated Press. "I'm so proud that the name of Yasser Arafat will be in my house every day, just as the name of Yasser Arafat will be in every Palestinian house forever."

The boys, each weighing about 4 1/2 pounds, are doing well, doctors said. Safra Hassan and her husband, Rafiq, have two other children, a 7-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son.

Safra Hassan said naming her infants for Arafat was a small gesture compared to the sacrifices he made in pursuit of Palestinian statehood.

"I hope that my children will grow up in peace and will witness Yasser Arafat's dreams become reality," she said.

When the media and government spokespersons recall Arafat's renunciation of terror, always recall that he never accepted the label of "terrorism" for fedayeen actions, which were "resistance." He never renounced anything that he stood for. As Arafat explained to the UN General Assembly in 1974:

Those who call us terrorists wish to prevent world public opinion from discovering the truth about us and from seeing the justice on our faces. They seek to hide the terrorism and tyranny of their acts, and our own posture of self-defence.

The difference between the revolutionary and the terrorist lies in the reason for which each fights. For whoever stands by a just cause and fights for the freedom and liberation of his land from the invaders, the settlers and the colonialists, cannot possibly be called terrorist, otherwise the American people in their struggle for liberation from the British colonialists would have been terrorists; the European resistance against the Nazis would be terrorism, the struggle of the Asian, African and Latin American peoples would also be terrorism, and many of you who are in this Assembly hall were considered terrorists. This is actually a just and proper struggle consecrated by the United Nations Charter and by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As to those who fight against the just causes, those who wage war to occupy, colonize and oppress other people, those are the terrorists. Those are the people whose actions should be condemned, who should be called war criminals: for the justice of the cause determines the right to struggle.

Arafat's 1988 UN speech continued this theme:

The worldwide embrace of our just cause, pressing for the realization of peace based on justice, demonstrates clearly that the world has unequivocally identified the predator and the prey, the aggressor and the victim, the struggler for freedom and peace and the terrorist.

And "the resistance" goes on.

When the media and government spokespersons recall Arafat's recognition of Israel, they mean the PLO's acceptance of UNSCRs 242 and 338 and the amendment of the PLO Charter to eliminate provisions calling for Israel's destruction. This represents an optimistic interpretation of the PLO's actions, one that has clearly been refuted by subsequent events.

Arafat long resisted identifying any abrogated or partially abrogated articles in the PLO Charter. When forced to do so by Netanyahu, he named several in a number of letters, one of which was "ratified" pursuant to the Wye River Accords at a December 1998 rally attended by President Clinton. However, the promise to expunge the offensive language from the Charter will never be fulfilled because no new Charter will ever be drafted, as this page from the Palestinian National Authority website confirms.

Indeed, there is no consensus within the PLO that any articles of the Charter have been abrogated. A 1999 analysis published by "Palestinian moderate" Yasser Abbed Rabbo's PNA Information Ministry, whose English translation was preserved by the Wayback Machine and which I took the liberty of archiving in the original Arabic, explains, via tortured political logic, that the events of Oslo in no way contravened the 1968 PLO Charter. The key to the argument is that the State of Palestine was declared prior to the PLO's acceptance of UN Resolutions 242 and 338, and thus its existence is not contingent on peaceful relations with Israel so long as the right of return of the refugees (spelling the end of the Zionist enterprise) remains unfulfilled

Editorial in today's 'Sun' (British tabloid):

AS Tony Blair flies to Washington today, there is once again a chance to establish peace in the Middle East.

But the Palestinians must seize the opportunity presented by the imminent death of Yasser Arafat.

President Bush pushed his road map for peace as far as it would go.

But Arafat wasn’t interested in doing a deal.

He just wanted to continue murdering innocent men, women and children in Israel as part of his twisted holy war.

The Palestinian leader invented terrorism and took delight in sending his “martyrs” — as he called the suicide bombers — into Israel.

Now the Palestinians have to choose between war or peace.

If their new leader is an Arafat clone, they will be wasting a golden chance. Arafat’s war has achieved nothing but misery for Arabs and Jews alike.

But there can be only one winner.

Blair told MPs yesterday that the Middle East will be the crucial talking point with Bush today and tomorrow.

Establishing democracy in Iraq is critical, but in truth much more hinges on securing peace for the one democracy that already exists in the region, Israel.

If the Palestinians have any sense, they will forget Arafat’s bloody leadership and start following Bush’s road map.

Let's remember Arafat's child victims at Ma'alot

Ilana Turgeman. Rachel Aputa. Yocheved Mazoz. Sarah Ben-Shim'on. Yona Sabag. Yafa Cohen. Shoshana Cohen. Michal Sitrok. Malka Amrosy. Aviva Saada. Yocheved Diyi. Yaakov Levi. Yaakov Kabla. Rina Cohen. Ilana Ne'eman. Sarah Madar. Tamar Dahan. Sarah Soper. Lili Morad. David Madar. Yehudit Madar.

Looking over the surnames, it appears to me that many of the victims were Sephardi Jews, whose families fled Arab terror to come to Israel.

As Arafat went into his final hours it emerged that he had creamed off vast sums given to his impoverished people by governments and aid agencies.

Writermom,

Earlier this year I was having Shabbat dinner at the home of some friends. Knowing that I attended a local day school in my youth, my host asked me if I knew David Applebaum, the ER doc who was killed with his daughter in a Jerusalem bombing. Dr. Applebaum had also attended the same school.

Dr. Applebaum was a couple of years older than me so we weren't classmates, but he had a number of classmates whe were siblings of my contemporaries and the school was pretty tiny then so we all knew everyone in the school.

At that point I realized that terrorism wasn't a hypothetical problem, that people who I knew personally had been killed.

The Arab/Muslim Nazi Connection

In the 1930s, the fascist regimes that arose in Italy and Germany sought greater stakes in the area, and began courting Arab leaders to revolt against their British and French custodians. Among their many willing accomplices was Jerusalem Mufti Haj Amin el-Husseini, who fled Palestine after agitating against the British during the Arab Revolt of 1936-39...
Once in Berlin, the Mufti received an enthusiastic reception by the "Islamische Zentralinstitut" and the whole Islamic community of Germany, which welcomed him as the "Führer of the Arabic world."

Garry Kasparov heads a group of Russians that oppose Putin.
He refers to Putin as a pawn of the secret service, and says that one can't have a real war on terrorism when he automatically sides with the palestinians every single time at the UN.

I wonder what the Russians think. I mean, it's not like anyone in the arab world cares how anti-Israel they are. Are Putin and his ilk still deluding themselves that the Soviet Union exists?
What could they possibly have to gain from the Arabs? India tried this policy for decades and all it got in return was Arab support for Pakistani terrorism, as well as Saudi funding for a Pakistani nuke.

What in the fairy fucking hell is the United States doing sending a delegation to the funeral of a terrorist? If bin Laden was killed in Pakistan would we send a State Department delegation headed by Colin Powell to his funeral?

This is the kind of lame brained gesture we have come to expect from Jimmy Carter but it is disappointing to see Bush engaged in the same sort of appeasement and ass-kissing of the Arabs.

"Rabbi Eric Yoffie, president of America's Union for Reform Judaism, bluntly agreed with the latter assessment: ``Arafat chose terror and jihad over compromise and peace. Their logic, same as the logic of Israeli leftists and pundits,
is that Israel should respect Arafat as a tribute to the palestinian people who are in pain, and use this humanitarian gesture as a bridge to a new peace initiative.
As they say "We should be smart, not just".

OZYMANDIAS

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown
And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Will Arafat be targetof 'body snatchers'?
Israel makes plans to prevent mourners from taking dead leader into Jerusalem

The Israeli government is making plans to prevent Palestinian mourners from trying to snatch Yasser Arafat's body during funeral activities and burying it in Jerusalem.

According to a report in Israel Insider, Israeli security officials expressed fear that members of the funeral procession will actually try to "snatch the body" from Ramallah, turn south and try to cross or bypass one of the several checkpoints separating the West Bank town and Israel's capital.

Arafat died this morning at a Paris hospital after being transferred there last month.

The newssite reported Arafat often called for a "million martyr march" and expressed the wish that he himself would be counted among the shahidim, destined to buried on the Temple Mount.

In recent days, however, Israeli officials have scoffed at the notion of burying the father of modern-day terrorism in Jerusalem.

"Jerusalem is a city where Jewish kings are buried, not Arab terrorists and mass murderers," Israeli Minister of Justice Yosef Lapid stated.

Israeli officials expressed a preference for a Gaza burial to prevent any attempt at forcing Arafat's body into Jerusalem.

The Palestinians will put Arafat's body in a stone coffin rather than a wooden one, his aides said today, to allow his re-interment at a later time in Jerusalem. For now, the longtime despot's body will be placed in a grave at his Ramallah compound.

As part of Israel's plan to keep order in the wake of Arafat's death, forces have sealed off the Palestinian territories, erecting roadblocks around major Palestinian population areas.

According to Israel Insider, the plan calls for isolating Jerusalem from Ramallah during Arafat's burial service there after a brief funeral ceremony in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday.

The newssite reported the funeral and burial will take place on the last Friday of Ramadan, which traditionally attracts very large numbers of Muslim worshippers to the Temple Mount during the regular Friday mosque service. Security sources said that the timing of the two events would create difficulties for the police, since officers would need to allocate large forces both to the funeral procession and to the Temple Mount.

I know, I know, but you have to understand how these things are done in the diplomatic world. Read it again: A king, a President, an important minister, and the most powerful nation in the world sends... an assistant secretary. In the diplo world, this is a slap in the face, and everyone in that world knows it. It's a bit like a Victorian manners comedy, in which a character delivers a devastating put-down in such a formal and mannerly way that the victim can't complain about it without seeming uncouth.

335 Jayce  Thu, Nov 11, 2004 12:18:22pm

We believe murdered victims of (for want of a better word) Facism, Islamo- or otherwise, have died in santification of the name of G-d. That is, the murderers want to get rid of G-d because He puts a crimp in their plans to control the world. Those not of the murderer's belief system are killed because they represent the existance of G-d, his rival. Jewish, agnostic or other, philanthropist or thief, they have died for the sake of the Creator of the World and immediately become pure, holy souls who are directly reunited with their Maker in Heaven..

All this is in prelude to a story about the children of Ma'alot taken from Legends of Safed, by Dov Silverman.

It is not well known that the schoolchildren murdered in Ma'alot 1974 by Palestinian terrorists were from the mystical city of Sfat, on a hiking trip.

In the evening after their burial, just before the Sabbath started, heart-shredded Jews: kaftaned Hasidim, bereted North Africans and skull-capped men, quietly made their way to the many synagogs of Sfat, except for one very old man who hobbles down the mountainside to the cemetary.

He moves as quickly as he can amongst the graves, his voice almost a whisper.

"Children! Children!" he calls to them. "Time is growing short. Come. Rise to greet the Sabbath." His voice grows stronger. "Oh my little ones, it's getting late. Come rise quickly. Yocheved; Shoshana; Yaffa; Ilana."

Slowly, in the long shadows of Mt. Maron, four young girls rise up to stand straight, their eyes bright, faces shining.

"Rachel;Yehudit; Rina; Malka; Sarah." Kissing Sarah on the forehead, he calls the three other Sarahs to her side. "Yacov; Tamar."

His voice produces the rhythm to which his feet dance as he calls, "Tzvia; Yona; Ilana; Yacov."

"Come my children, we must be in time for the Sabbath."

Yakov turns toward Him: "Are we going to Jerusalem?"

With a smile, he answers, "We are going in that direction."

"Why?" asks Yehudit.

He gazes toward Meron where the sages of the Talmud are buried, then to the holy city of Safed, then raises his eyes heavenward. "You have been chosen to make His Name holy, and are going to a place far better than any living man knows."
