RetweetIraqi Minister: Al Jazeera is a "Terror Channel"

Tue, Nov 23, 2004 at 2:55:08 pm PST

A pretty gutsy statement from Iraqi Defense Minister Hazem Shaalan:

“Al-Jazeera is a channel of terrorism. That is clear and we say openly and without hesitation: Al-Jazeera is a channel of terrorism,” Shaalan was quoted by the London-based Arabic newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat as saying.

The Qatar-based station, which has been banned from reporting in Iraq since early August, has frequently been accused by US and Iraqi authorities of inciting violence by screening “exclusive” videotapes from Islamic militants, including Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Despite the ban, the 24-hour news channel is often first to announce breaking news from the war-ravaged country, including kidnappings and beheadings of foreign hostages as well as statements from militant groups.

Shaalan charged that Iraqi “terrorist” Omar Hadeed, who he alleged has links to Al-Qaeda, is a brother of Al-Jazeera’s office director in Iraq, Hamed Hadeed.

He also said the journalist was receiving videos showing beheadings in the restive Iraqi city of Fallujah from his brother.

Al-Jazeera has denied that its Iraq director has any relationship with Omar Hadeed.

I wonder when Javier Solana will grow the balls to say that.

Al Jazeera to spend US$30m to launch English news channel

The network has said that the new channel, to be called Al Jazeera International, will try to counteract what it says unbalanced reporting from Western networks such as CNN and BBC.

Can you imagine!?

3 greenmamba  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:00:28pm
That brought a sharp reaction from the broadcaster, which expressed its "utter outrage"

They're petulant and they're having a frenzy.

4 roman thomas  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:02:03pm

obviously canuckistan doesn't think so. they allow al jazeera, and not fox. well, not yet.

First Dan Rather and now this!

Man! you just can't depend on ANY broadcast media for accuracy and fairness anymore!

7 Judith  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:03:35pm

Please, CRTC, keep them out. There is lots of talk that since we have the rabidbly proBush far right lunacy of FOX being allowed in, we should also have Al Jazeera, including from our favorite moonbat from the Toronto Star of Islam, Antonia Zerbasie (sp?).

8 zulubaby  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:04:15pm

Uh, what do the French want?

France told an international conference on Iraq Tuesday it was time to put aside differences over the U.S.-led invasion and help the country put an end to violence.

Nothing for nothing with those mamzerim. Something's up.

9 rman  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:06:15pm

It kinda makes you wonder why it took a brave man like this, who is highly vulnerable to recriminations from terrorists operating within Iraq, to openly say what is so obvious to all of us. I guess the rest of the world's "leaders" -- and the media who are responsible for reporting the truth -- have found it more expedient to pretend like Al Jazeera is a legitimate "news" organization! Is it any wonder that thay have NO credibility?

10 Tanker J.D.  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:06:31pm

Hoo-ray. This is what the Arab world needs: their leaders rejecting and denouncing terrorism along with its VAST propaganda arm, and meaning it! This happening is a good sign of progress.

Al-Jazeera has denied that its Iraq director has any relationship with Omar Hadeed

It's 'bout time political leaders started putting slanted media on the defensive

In the eyes of the dhimmi-crats, Al-Jizz IS a real "news" service.
Remember???,,,They covered the demo convention

16 Americain  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:13:56pm

Al-Jazeera has their own embedded reporters, only there on
the terrorist's side. I'm glad the defense minister spoke up.
Those guys seem to be sprouting some balls.

Regarding Al Jazeera, from An excellent blogger in Iraq - the Messopotamian

I have just been watching “Al Jazeera” Television, although it is something very distasteful to me. They are at it again. When will people realize that this terrorist organ is a real menace and an enemy propaganda mouthpiece? There is no longer even pretence at neutrality and factual reporting. When will the American government take action, considering that this station is sponsored and financed by the Qatari regime which is supposed to be on very good terms with the U.S.?
Al Jazeera has been actively engaged in hostile propaganda and has played an important role in inflaming the situation and jeopardizing American and allied soldiers, not to mention the Iraqis. It has become the official agent and mouthpiece of all the terrorist groups and the means of delivering speeches and statements from the likes of UBL and all manner of masked men, be-headers and hostage takers. Is this not a time of War? Were not the Iraqi T.V. stations taken off the air during the battle against Saddam? Why are these any different? I am telling you that despite being banned in Iraq they are still obsessed with biased and inflammatory coverage of the situation. Enough is enough and something drastic must be done.

Salaam, Alaa

Al-Jazeera is a channel of terrorism.

Hard to state it more clearly than that. Let's hope there wasn't any Islamonazi funk in the report to qualify the declaration.

Have you read Judith before? I don't think so. If you have dumbass, you wouldn't be calling me stupid. She has pity for all the jihadis out there after our troops in Iraq.

You know you can disagree w. someone without attempting to impute their sexual behaviour. I generally agree that Judith is much more centrist than most any other posters on this list, but do we have to resort to name calling and other ad hominen attacks!?

She doesn't have to have watched FOX to report on the fact that Lefty Canucks want to use that networks admission to Canada as a pretext for letting Al-Jazeera in...

29 moonsbreath  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:28:58pm

Apparently no one here has ever watched the old Saturday Night Live. But as far as getting personal here, this place is full of personal attacks. Get over it.

Still, generally speaking, people are little overly harsh on Judith.

I mean, call me CONSERVATIVE, but I beleive men aught to tread more lightly in mixed company... But, I guess I'm just a right-wing nut job...

"Maybe, boss, if we had our "associates" wear smiley-face-masks next time they cut someone's head off, they won't be so objectionable. Make it more like a game show, maybe, ask some questions first, give 'em a chance to win some big, big cash prizes instead of getting killed, that might go down better; especially since we're now on the air in England against Benny Hill reruns. Just thinking out loud, give a try, see how it plays in Peoria, run it up the flagpole and see who blows up, give it a try, what the hell?"

34 Luigi  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:35:07pm

I love this statement

Despite the ban, the 24-hour news channel is often first to announce breaking news from the war-ravaged country, including kidnappings and beheadings of foreign hostages as well as statements from militant groups.

You betcha somethings up when Chirac starts making the 'nicey-nicey' talk...

On the 25th both they and Iran have to detail their little deal in the Un. Chirac's been supporting terrorism indirectly(and directly) for years, maybe...just maybe, the threat of physically loosing Iran's economic base along with their investment in a widening conflict has his attention.

GW and Condi are in the drivers seat, they won't fall for it. Let's see the Fwrench people hang the bastard for selling them out before making any 'nicey-nicey' talk of our own.

The Marines kicked their Jihad a**s in Falludown fighting and so they have to crank up the media war front. Allah be Damned we are comeing for ur micro-phones too.

40 Protagonist  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 1:49:27pm

Speaking of radical, dissident media sources:

Viacom pays out $3.5M in fines

What they don't mention is that they make about
$20 Billion a year in revenue

For the three months ended September 30, 2004, revenues of $5.5 billion increased 4% from $5.3 billion and for the nine months ended September 30, 2004, revenues of $16.2 billion increased 9% from $14.9 billion for the same prior-year period primarily driven by increases in advertising revenues and affiliate fees.

If there was some pervert going around my neighborhood exposing himself to large groups of people--including children, having sex in churches, and demonstrating in public-view offensive sexual practices, I would expect more punishment than a fine of 0.1% of their yearly salary (the equivalent of a $20-$60 fine?!). There comes a time when this ceases to be free speech and becomes an assault on us.

"Let God curse all those who terrorise Iraqi citizens and children of Iraq, be they journalists or others. The day will come when we will take (measures) against Al-Jazeera other than by words," the minister warned.

He said the channel continues to operate in Iraq "secretly, in contravention of the law."

In its response Tuesday, Al-Jazeera expressed its "deep concern about these allegations that are tantamount to inciting violence against the channel's employees.

How ironic. That's all Al-Jazeera does, incite violence, but on a much larger scale. Karma just did a 180 and is coming back at mach 10.

Those guys seem to be sprouting some balls.

Allawi has had a large pair for a while. This is part of why Bush wanted to turn control over to the Iraqis as soon as possible - they can get away with saying things much more bluntly that he can. He can say, "Islam is a religion of peace," while they say, "Osama has a tiny penis." Well, I guess it was the South Park guys who said that, but you get the idea.

51 quark2  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 3:09:50pm

Allawi does indeed have a set. And he's proven them in the past, considering what he's lived through. Saddam Hussein tried to have him assassinated while he was living in exile in England.
Just about hacked him to death with an axe, and he lived through the terrible wounds.
Saddam needs to be very very afraid of this man.

Baldy, it's good to see you again.

I've missed your posts.

And I agree, let's cut out the incivility here. Judith has posted things I've disagreed with, but she's always been nice, and, I think more importantly, comes from a position of intellectual honesty, rather than a lot of the two-faced partisan bullshit to which I've unfortunately become accostomed from far-left lunatics.

54 Baldy  Tue, Nov 23, 2004 4:10:39pm

Lewis - Frank IBC - Ed Moran - Ann - J.D. - Daybrother - Throbert Mcgee and NY Nana --- A belated thank you to all of you for asking about me the past few months. I hope all of you are well. I am so glad to read the Iraqi Minister's words. Some people say Al Jazeera can't be bad because some Arab dictators/Kings are sometimes unhappy with it. It's a crock. They call terrorists "martyrs." Then again, our MSM calls terrorists "militants"...

NASA should start a program to harness and controll very large asteroids. And they should start raining them down on our enemy's major cities in a covert action.

When a city goes up in a ball of fire...well...I guess it was an act of god.

Not large enough to start a nuclear winter, but large enough to level the place.

Just a thought.

Much as I'd like to see terror channels destroyed, neither the Iraqi Minister nor we Americans can shut down Fake but Accurate CBS, Michael Moore and others in our society whose "news" are mostly biased lies meant to sway us, not inform us.

If we paid no attention to these people, they'd shut up.
