 RetweetNew York Election Shocka!

Mon, Dec 20, 2004 at 5:23:26 pm PST

In an amazing twist, according to the official certificate for New York’s electoral college voters, New York did not vote for John F. Kerry: US Electoral College 2004 Certificate. (Hat tip: Joel.)

Haha, the superior intelligence of the leftists never ceases to amaze me.

The sad thing is, if this happened in Florida or Ohio and it was "George Q Bush" or something like that... you know damn well the left would start suing everyone that moved, claiming that Bush didn't actually win the state and thus shouldn't get the EVs.

But it is sadly funny. Of course, I live in Ukraine County, Washington, so I can't find too much joy in governmental election screwups. :/

John Kerry is a student of history. He knows how history is mostly based on distortions or revisionist. He also knows his books will be around long after we are gone. How many will believe his POS, Tour of Dutyis the truth about his time in Vietnam, his "spellbinding" speeches, his VVAW traitor time. The moment he walked across the DNC stage in Boston, saluting with the big screen showing the American flag behind him, and him saying "John Kerry, reporting for duty" I said "you have got to be fucking kidding!"

CicadaJoe - How's your week going? good I hope.

I believe the story about the Jewish background is that it was only recently discovered and that he didn't know it until he ran for President. Yeah, right. His brother converted to Judaism when he married his wife. I think he trotted it out to reel in the Jewish vote plus his Catholic faith (really, it's not bad when you have your marriage with two children annuled by the Pope, like Kerry did, putz), Teresa said she was African-American. He tried to cover some bases. Vietnam hero, Anti-Vietnam War Hero, Superrich women gigilo...

57 Irene NYC  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 4:22:43pm

NOT that I think it will help...but there really is a reason why the courts are ruling that New York needs to up its education expenditure from $12K to $20K per student. (It's called desperation.)

58 Blue Falcon  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 4:22:56pm

So I guess if come January Ohio gets brought up again by the MSM the blogsphere can bring up the fact that Kerry should really not be getting the NYC electoral votes right? I'm assuming you're just pointing out that we still have our beloved democracy.

They are wrong that its disappearing. They are wrong about the direction they wish to take it. They are right that its something to fight for. I'm sure I'm being picky, but would you mind being more clear distinguishing the moonbat from the democracy.

I'm swell, thanks for asking!

Actually, Kerry also claimed Muslim heritage (I am not kidding -- it is in print in Time magazine, I think) if I remember correctly, and he whispered he had a Jewish grandfather at a function attended by Jewish voters to try to con them into voting for him, but tried to avoid whispering too loudly 'cause the Catholic group he had just conned might hear. Basically, if you were a Catholic-jewish-muslim-hunter-gun controller-war monger-pacifist-pro life-abortionist with a strong leaning toward complete fiscal irresponsibility, Kerry was your man.

Bubble Girl, I am afraid you intrigue me.

I lost a huge post, but it is -30C in Saranac Lake, NY

I've been drunk in Saratoga Springs, which isn't that far.

I can't remember the 3 letter identifier for Saratoga Springs, so I can't look it up. But Utica Club is from Utica, IIRC. Utica is -27C (-16F), which means your Genessee Cream Ale or Utica Club or Matt's Beer Ball won't need refridgeration, but may even need warming to keep liquid.

Reminds me, visiting Quincy, MA, in 1981 when I was younger. Hung out in about half a meter of snow at a gold course in Wollaston, MA with Pat O'Malley and a couple of other guys, people without gloves shared. One hand could stay in the coat pocket, but you needed a "drinking glove" for the beer holding hand. One of the guys worked at a supermarket (Star Market?) and took some freshly expired meat, I borrowed my grandmother's oven grill, we found some wood, built a fire, grilled some not exactly fresh meat, and left the beer semi-close to the fire, so it wouldn't freeze. Drinking beer, late at night, in knee deep snow.

BTW, who expected Miami and New England to be this close?

BTW, looking at new European, and 00Z ETA coming in, Houston probably cold enough for snow Christmas and Christmas Eve, but precip stays offshore. Best chance for fresh White Christmas snow is Florida Panhandle, to inland Florida, up towards Washington, DC

BTW, if I don't have a team in the hunt, I usually cheer the underdog, except when the favorite is a playoff bound team from a northern city with an outdoor stadium.

Nothing better than a conference championship game in driving snow. So far, so good, should have games at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia (marginally northern) and New England.

Did Miami just take the lead?

91 ErnieG  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 6:23:37pm

If I recall 9th grade Civics, the reason that the Founding Fathers established the Electoral College was to place the choosing of the President in the hands of Electors, who would be more responsible in their deliberations, and be less likely to mess up.

Excellent post. Kerry was intriguing. I know more about him than I do Bush. I could probably do a Kerry "What's My Lie" Show. I forgot about the goose hunt. No pictures of Kerry actually shooting the gun, or carrying the goose. Earlier, I wrote a Rashoman Vietnam. I will go back and copy. It's cute.

94 pauldanish  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 6:37:19pm

Probably some old lefty fossil in the state civil service was thinking about John L. Lewis of the United Mine Workers.

It would be a amusing if Bush's supporters in Congress were to insist that the 31 votes be recorded for John L. Kerry, however...

95 Bubble Girl  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 6:39:08pm

CicadoJoe - Pshew - that was work going back and finding that post. Are you familiar with Kirosawa, the great Japanese Film Director and his Rashoman movie? Tells the story from 3 different views...

Kerry's Version:

As I turned I felt a sharp sting in the back of my thigh, warm liquid seeped down my leg. Gooks dressed in black pajamas ran away from the river bank into the densely bambooed jungle. I fell onto the deck, paralyzed from shock. The pain, the pain was immense, overwhelming.

Kerry's gunner:

I saw Lt Cmdr Kerry fall onto the deck, a look of pain and bewilderment on his face. "Am I hurt bad, don't lie to me, make the pain stop," he said. I looked at the back of his thigh, a Mekong Mosquito had bitten through his fatigues, the Lt. had pissed in his pants from fright.

The Gooks on shore:

We were fishing on the banks when we hear loud shrieking, it come from one those American Swiftboats, we ran for our lives, we very, very scared, it hurt our ears. I never forget that noise, as long as I live.

97 Siergen  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 6:52:12pm

As amusing I find this screw-up by the losing party, it reinforces my idea that the Electoral College needs reforms. I have no trouble with the concept of apportioning Electoral Votes based on the number of seats in Congress the state has - I think it does a good job of ensuring that no areas of the country are ignored by the candidates. However, I long worried that there is nothing to prevent the Electors from voting for someone other than the candidate who won their respective state. This could either by be accident, as has happened twice in this election so far, or it could happen on purpose.

I propose instead that the first vote by the Electors is automatically cast according to the rules in place for that state before the election. (As I recall, each state has the option to choose to apportion their Electoral Votes if they want to, instead of casting them as a block.) If no candidate has the required number of votes after the "mandatory" vote, then the Electors could change their votes as they can under the current rules.

98 Platinum  Mon, Dec 20, 2004 6:52:12pm

They must be recorded for John L. Kerry, not John F. Kerry when counted in Congress. What if some were cast for George H.W. Bush, surely George W. Bush could not receive those. If you were on Jeopardy! and answered "John L. Kerry" for "John F. Kerry", you don't get it correct

I'm confused. Was there ever a time when electoral votes didn't all go to one person?

According to Article II, Section 1, Clause 2 of the U.S. Constitution:

Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but no Senator or Representative, or Person holding an Office of Trust or Profit under the United States, shall be appointed an Elector.

As I read that, a State could choose any means to select their Electors, including apportioning them among the various candidates based how what proportion of the general vote they received.

If I remember this correctly from the 2000 debacle, I believe that some states have passed legislation requiring electors to vote in accordance with the raw vote total for the state, while other states do in fact leave it up to each individual elector on that day. Feel free to correct me, though, if anyone knows I'm wrong.

In the "old days," as someone mentioned above, the electoral college served to ensure that, while everyone got their say, people who actually knew what was going on were the ones making the final determination, so maybe being able to switch your vote at the last minute wasn't such a bad idea, if you knew that most people in your state hadn't heard x, y, or z...

Now though, presidential electors are pretty much just state legislators, party hacks or supervolunteers who aren't likely to be any smarter or well-informed than the rest of us. (No disrespect to any state legislators, party hacks, or supervolunteers out there -- or to any of you who might be presidential electors, for all I know) I'd just like to make sure we don't have any turncoats or grudgeholders hanging around that are going screw up the whole thing at the last minute, which is why I tend to be a fan of legally locking in electoral votes...it sounds kind of undemocratic, I know, and I hate that, but...I think it's important that voters know that their popular votes are going to be correctly translated into electoral votes -- without that certainty, what's the point in voting?

Maybe I'm getting a little extreme or dramatic here...it's getting late...

I believe there are two states in which the electors can split electoral college votes, but I'm too lazy to look it up.

I think it's Nebraska and New Hampshire, or Vermont or something.

BTW, it's zero degrees (F) here in Albany, NY.

Close, Maine. The Electoral vote is based on congressional district.

A few days after the Florida debacle of 2000, our paper in Annapolis had a front page photo of protesters in Florida and one guy had a sign that said "Democrats: Too Dumb to Vote"...I see that now holds true again.

Ooops!

Remember the old saying: "Measure twice, cut once."

Or, perhaps more relevant: "The Preview button is your friend!"

Something like this happen in Wisconsin. I think it was 8 or 10 years ago that the University of Wisconsin handed out all of their degrees with "Wisconson" in stead of Wisconsin the misspelling was very funny. There were many that had a good laugh at that.

I'm sure that there will be hardly any one in New York that will care. ha ha

Merry Christmas

hmmm...

John "Lie is my middle name" Kerry

As the old cliche' goes, the truth will come out.

OT - got down to 28 in Jacksonville, FL last night (or in honor of the 2000 election results, 25, no 31, no 27...)

Obviously No Child Left Behind is way too late for all those grown-up electors. Oh, well, perhaps they'll get it right the next time.

cathy :-)

It can't be. New York is the State of the intellectuals. It's a blue state, thus, smarter than the rest of us. Obviously some red-stater changed the spelling.

I agree. The guy is an embarassment. His last quote says it all.

"I don't have any political status. But I do have moral authority. I don't really need authority or political power and I don't suffer because of the absence of it."

What moral authority -- he validates fraudulent elections around the world, undermines any and all US intentions in the world, allows that asswipe Michael Moore to sit with him at the DNC, etc. and claims moral authority?

And I'd love to hear what the feminists have to say about all those life-changing unilateral decisions he made without any input from the little woman...

Oh yeah.

121 Carolina Girl  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 5:11:49am

Too bad they didn't accidently put an "N" instead of an "L"

Then it could be "JNK" -- junk

Which sums him up rather well.

122 RepJ  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 5:40:20am

Ahahahahahahahahaha

123 alkmyst  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 5:59:52am

Anyone know if "Djalk" means anything funky in arabic? I'm looking for something in Hebrew, but interestingly, JLK has no basis for any word I can think of...

Still not over in Ohio...

Barring an Orange Revolution, yeah, it is. The vote is certified and the EC has voted. It doesn't matter if a zillion court rulings come out now, the vote is certified, the EC has voted, and the House of Representatives gets to vote in January.

This court stuff is now officially "political ego stroking."

126 ckb  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 6:35:48am

L is for "Liveshot", of course.

127 h0mi  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 8:50:49am

We need to find a John L Kerry to step up to the plate from Massachussetts and rightfully claim his 31 electoral college votes.

Hahaha.

128 Andjam  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 12:21:33pm

Maybe some democrat(s) were a bit angry with Kerry?

129 winemaker  Tue, Dec 21, 2004 12:22:18pm

And you wonder why Florida was a mess in 2000?

 Frank says:

There were 45 men in the jail cell, the toilet and shower had never been cleaned, the temperature was 110 degrees so you couldn't sleep night or day, there were roaches in the oatmeal, sadistic guards, and everything that was nice. -- Zappa 1969 interview. This had happened during the days of Studio Z in Cucamonga (1963). Frank was released on bail (his father took out a bank loan to pay for it). Frank had been busted for "conspiracy to commit pornography," after making a silly recording of suggestive sexual sounds (giggling edited out) for someone who had asked him to provide a "special" tape recording for a stag night. That someone turned out to be Detective Willis of the San Bernadino Vice Squad. Their conversation was recorded by a hidden microphone and this was used as evidence at Zappa's trial.
