Robot Camel Racing in Qatar

Wed, Dec 29, 2004 at 5:50:48 pm PST

The monarchy of Qatar has decided to stop using indentured child servants in camel races.

DOHA (AFP) - Qatar said it was banning the use of children as jockeys in camel races, a favorite sport in the oil-rich Gulf region that has been widely criticised over the use of children brought from southern Asia.

Why now?

Because they have robot jockeys, and don’t need the children any more.

The move, announced after a cabinet meeting, follows an announcement by Doha that it was preparing to substitute robots for jockeys from next year.

The cabinet “agreed to take the required measures to ban the bringing, hiring and training of children in camel races,” said a statement carried by the official QNA news agency.

It did not specify the age under which children would be excluded from the sport, but a Qatari official said earlier this year that a bill was being drafted that would ban hiring people under 18.

The president of the organizing committee of camel races in the gas-rich Gulf Arab state, Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Faisal al-Thani, hailed the government’s move as “a sound decision ... especially as we are in the last phase of readying the robot-jockey.”

The decision was in line with “Qatar’s moves to entrench a culture of human rights,” he told AFP.

“Plus,” added Sheikh al-Thani, “the robots don’t need to be fed, and don’t cry for their mothers.”

UPDATE at 12/29/04 6:12:44 pm:

OT - Hate to go OT so soon, But Capt Ed over at the "Captain's Quarters" has posted that the Protest Warriors are planning a counter protest to the moonbats that protest every day at the Pentagon. He has asked that anyone wanting to join this counter protest work through the Protest Warriors as they are experienced in this.

Here is the link for further details:

Charles, maybe you can start a thread on this and get more support.

I see this moonbat "lady" every day and would love to see 50-100 Lizards join the Protest Warriors out there on Monday Morning.

#1 Munchkin -

It sure is for real. I saw this in a tv special many years ago.

Of course the boys' families are very poor, so the camel owners take full advantage of that fact, with the usual Muslim propensity to prey on the weak.

Injury or death is not an uncommon occurence, neither is sexual abuse.

Why is it we treat them like real people, again? Why do we consider them "friendly" when this is representative of what they are?

My friends don't beat their wives, turn their kids into slaves, or abuse their animals. Why would I expect less of another country and consider them my friend?

I once saw a documentary on the slave trade between Pakistan and Gulf states, young girls taken for brides and prostitues, boys taken for camel racing & prostitution.

It was one of the most upsetting things i've seen.

Boys are often kidnapped and flown over. Obviously, they provide sexual relief at night.

Friends who've worked in the Gulf say slavery, or near-slavery is still rife.

It is great to see the great strides being made in the sport of camel racing as technology marches on. It was at the Kings Cup races in Riyadh that I got my first glimpse at the marvels in the advancement of the science of the sport. Six year old Paki kids wearing wearing warmup suits covered in velcro riding camels upon which the other half of the velcro had been attached with crazy glue. The use of Day-Glo orange spray paint to number the camels is pretty high tech also. Above "The Heat" posted that the Camels were treated as badly as their owners wives and children. That is a slander! The camels are treated much better.

The UAE also uses child jockeys - even after it was banned. When the Aussie ABC "Foreign Correspondent" tried to film stuff on child jockeys, the police took action - trying to stop filming.

I expect enforcement of the announced ban to be equally lax - especially when the robot idea "unexpectedly" fails.

Robots on camels ... oh how my world is rocked! I can see it now, all in the lens of my unfolding imagination, a newer, straighter, more emboldened Islam emerging from the desert of distant dreams. An army and race of smarter, better, longer-lasting, more self-sufficient, miniaturized robots, bestriding the earth like conquering ants, sitting on prayer chamois cloths high above the sand, able to execute and hold a perfect prayer posture while at a full gallop, and capable of reciting the Koran simultaneously in 67 languages without oil or drink. Truly, we have a reached an exhilorating, yet terrorfying milestone in the evolution of Islamic history. Gone are the simple, pliable slaves and indentured servants of a more primitive, animalistic Islam. Tomorrow's Islam is today's future, as we dispense with the glory of displaying full bondage, and boldly go where no camel has gone before.

Resistance is futile

PDM, baldy, wasn't there a story a little while ago about how the terrorists were going to try this in an attempt to blind the pilots? It's hovering around the edges of my memory ...

Charles, are you around? I may need your help with this one.

105 zulubaby  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 7:04:17pm

Never mind, Google is my friend.

Government says terrorists could use lasers to blind pilots

Federal officials are concerned that terrorists could try to down aircraft by blinding pilots with laser beams during landing approaches.

A memo sent to law enforcement agencies recently by the FBI and the Homeland Security Department says there is evidence that terrorists have explored using lasers as weapons.

"Although lasers are not proven methods of attack like improvised explosive devices and hijackings, terrorist groups overseas have expressed interest in using these devices against human sight," the memo said.

"In certain circumstances, if laser weapons adversely affect the eyesight of both pilot and co-pilot during a non-instrument approach, there is a risk of airliner crash," the agencies said.

The federal authorities said there is no specific intelligence indicating al-Qaeda or other groups might use lasers in the United States.

In September a pilot for Delta Air Lines reported an eye injury from a laser beam shone into the cockpit during a landing approach in Salt Lake City. The incident occurred about 5 miles from the airport. The plane landed safely.

FBI and other federal officials are investigating. It is not clear if a crime was committed or if the laser was directed into the cockpit by accident.

Something's going on.

The only people I'm shedding any tears over are the Western tourists and the people in India.

107 El  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 7:23:16pm

But how will they rape Robot jockeys ?

108 Meryl Yourish  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 7:47:53pm

Oh, come on. Scrappleface got another one past the MSM, didn't he?

109 PDM  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 7:58:02pm

#105 zulubaby,

Interesting find.

Something's going on.

These last incidents seem to be at higher altitudes, but there is certainly something going on here worth paying attention to.

110 rabidfox  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 8:05:05pm

Once is chance, twice is coincidence, but three times is a conspiracy. You bet that someone is trying something out.

111 zulubaby  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 8:15:45pm

PDM, lots of links about it. I thought Charles had posted about it too but if he did, I can't find the thread.

112 Shinken  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 8:23:23pm

So I guess it would be racist and innacurate to call them camel jockeys. They enslave and starve little kidnapped Asian kafir for that job. They don't actually jockey the camels theirselves.

113 point man  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 8:37:59pm

I wonder if this grand technological achievement will reach the ears of the Nobel Prize committee. I bet they are anxious to recognize the scientific contributions of the Arab dominated nations of the Mideast.

114 Hassan Bin Laiden  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 9:11:00pm

This smacks of that crappy Star Wars sequel where young Anakin (Darth Vader) has to race his pod for that Arab half bat/half bird thing that looked like Yasser. Anyone know what the heck I'm rambling on about? Thank you NyQuil!

115 Anne Elk (not AN elk)  Wed, Dec 29, 2004 9:25:42pm

Don't be absurd - robotics has not developed to the point where a machine can jockey a racing camel.

The articles specificially say they will be remote guided. That is not a robot. Closer to one of those toy cars with the remote controls.

They also say the development is "in the future".

I have not found a single patent or professional literature clipping about this. And people in the robotics world don't seem to know anything about it. One clipping says they are "surprised".

I have real patents to work on this morning but I don't think I'll find anything even if I keep searching.

If you enjoy robotic sports, google around to read up on robotic soccer.

Coincidence? I think not.

NyQuil is kicking in. Night.

again my parents are vindicated! they used to tell me this goes on in the whole of the arabian peninsula, but i thought they were exaggerating. they also told me what other uses the "light" skinned young boys have to the princes and patrons of the races. but i don't feel like mentioning it here.

The current camel jockeys are for the most part Sudanese boys under the age of 12. They aren't really sold into slavery, they're 'leased' into temporary slavery. They don't do much other than whip the camel during the race. They are literally velcroed onto the camel and it takes two grown men to pry them off at the end of the race. When they get to the point that they weigh too much, they're shipped back to the Sudan. No danger of a robotically-controlled camel veering off into the crowd because there is no crowd for the vast majority of the track, just right around the start/finish line, and they're all in the stands. At least that's the setup at the relatively new track at Saffaniyah in Qatar (been there, done that).

Meanwhile, here in Beijing, the high today was 27 F, clear and sunny. Apperently some wind came along and blew the regular clounds of smag away.

We, the infidels of the west, are using our technology every day to cure disease and ease suffering in the world. Meanwhile, the Arabs are hard at work creating robot camel jockies. Progress, thy name is islam!

120 helloworld  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 2:01:14am

it isn't just sudanese children, bangladesh has been hard hit by this too. and despite the ban, people STILL smuggle children.

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
"But the ban has often been ignored as children continue to be smuggled into the country."

[Link: www.hurights.or.jp...]
despite being literally TIED to the camels, some still fall
"a number of children fell from the camels during the races and died"

[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
here's pictures of the scares from rope burns as a result of being tied up to the camels

and the worse part is even when "freed" they still have no peace:
"Since many were trafficked before they were five, few will be able to recognise their parents, let alone speak their mother tongue."

sick and satanic

121 helloworld  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 2:09:06am

last one:

up to 40,000 children maybe involved in this nightmare:
[Link: acr.hrschool.org...]
"Child Jockeys: 40,000 children on slave labour as ‘child camel jockeys’ in Middle East and Arab countries"

“These innocent children of humanity are living in iron tents, without electricity in the temperature of above 50 degree centigrade (above 100 degree Fahrenheit), where the sexual abuse is common”.

“There are estimated 30,000 active racing camels and about 17 racetracks throughout the UAE. Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah, which are centres of this activity,
have five of the main stadiums near the Rulers Palaces in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah”.

and where's the UN? or that's right, bitching about how the US is "cheap" with aid and how israel is "abusing" pals.

You know what would be awesome? If they got MONKEYS to ride camels! They could dress them up in little jockey uniforms. I would pay to see that.

As anybody who follows science fiction knows, eventually ALL robots turn against their masters.

Terminator IV: Rise of the Camel Jockeys.

125 Luigi  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 4:09:19am

The stock exchanges of Jakarta, Bombay, and Kuala Lampur are at or headed to their year highs.

Not a cloud on the horizon. The sky's the limit. Must be a lot of joy in these countries, right?

Let me reiterate, I believe these exchanges are giddily anticipating the influx of American and other charity, and the redevopment of some nice beachfront.

By the way, I cannot post on the latest thread due to some technical glitch. If anyone can re-post this on the latest thread, please do.

126 Cato the Elder  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 6:24:40am

That "robot jockey" in the picture is the stupidest-looking thing I've ever seen. And how much you wanna bet it'll be a miserable failure? Engineered by Arabs? Yeah, that'll work.

127 Al di Grandpa  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 6:36:00am

OT: My grandson Cpl. Pat, USMC is among these guys.

Thank you for the link to our Marines going on Tsunami relief mission. Our troops are the best humanitarians on earth, bar none. Bless em everyone!

129 Faith for Sudan  Thu, Dec 30, 2004 10:37:35am

They also use camels to punish (torture) the young camel jockeys when misbehave (they feel like it). They lay the boy across the camel's belly when it has not had any water for a while, then let the camel drink and drink. As the camel drinks, it's belly is distended, and the child is stretched -- like the rack. Lovely people, huh. Many of these children in places like Qatar and elsewhere in the Arab world are taken in slavery from Sudan and Mauritania. Check out the American Anti-Slavery Group, [Link: www.iabolish.org....]

Praying for more sanity and mercy in the New Year,
Faith

So camel jockey's are real.
