#3 Braindirt -

"Aloha Snackbar" is derived from "Allahu Akbar". IIRC, it was coined by Geepers.

P.J. O'Rourke's Book Holidays in Hell, which I think came out in 1987, contains a chapter titled "Among the Euro-Weenies."

cra swarm is definitely an lgf term...I had to take a diversity training class because I used the term in a hall way discussion at work. Nah, essay. If you ramble on long enough you will eventually hit something to give you some points or bore the reader so badly that they will give you credit so they ain't gotta read no more. (Just in case y'all were wonderin' how I managed to graduate...)

20 zombie  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:31:17pm

Wow, I finally log off after 3 hours of work, and 30 seconds afterwards Charles makes a thread out of it! So typical. I'll catch up now folks...hold on.

21 Stop Hillary  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:31:45pm

Actually, I think "jooos" became fashionable as a mocking "tribute" to Cynthia McKinney and her (father/uncle?) that was quoted as attributing an election loss to "you know, the jews" (said with a drawl). Ever since then, any remote, farfetched and idiotic conspiracy that the LLL and their allies the Islamofacists could concoct would, on these boards, be derisively attributed by the Lizards to the "jooos" (when not otherwise being attributed to Karl Rove or Haliburton).

I think we really have to credit the hate-filled McKinney clan with this one. But trust me, they deserve it.

No "globular clusters"?

I asked on the original thread:

Nekama's Troll Hammer
globular clusters
Mr. Holland's Opus

Are they definitively LGF-specific? Worth including on the list?

Got an answer about Nekama's Troll Hammer, but not the others. Still not sure if they count as being dictionary-worthy.

Where do you work, Al Jazerra? What else would someone call that sort of event? Just what did your re-education therapist suggest as an alternative?

Wait, I have an idea. How about "Personal acquisition of DNA mementos". No one could possibly be offended by that.

41 It's Miss Donna V. to you  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:39:49pm

A couple of years ago, a Swiss troll (T.H. from Suburbia) used to drop by here with flamebait from time to time. He wrote an unflattering German-language article about LGF on some Euro website and included the term "Euroweenies." When you ran the article through the translation thingee, "Euroweenies" came out "Euro small sausages." So for a while, the Europeans were referred to as the "small sausages."

Zombie,

Nekama wrote her(?) own response to a troll which became the Troll Hammer extraordinaire.

Globular clusters, though no LGF specific but an astronomical term, became a taunt on the famous thread bearing that name; it's usage here is unique.

Mr Holland's Opus, again, is not original with LGF, but has been hijacked and used in an LGF-specific manner to distract a troll or remind minions not to feed it.

What was the diversity class like? Back in my college days (early 90s) in Illinois my buddy and one of my future roommates had to watch a 3 hour film of males being intimate with each other after he got caught vandalizing a dorm (just straight stupid vandalism no motive). They tried to find any excuse to make you watch those propaganda films, I saw several. Most had the common theme; white guys are racist homophobes who will probably rape you.

83 Frank IBC  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:56:28pm

"Moby" the noun was definitely not coined here, but we may have popularized the use of it as a passive verb as in:

Sullivan's let himself get Mobyed yet again.

(For examples, see "Quote of the Day" on andrewsullivan.com.)

84 zombie  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:57:10pm

ZOG
feh

Both WAY too common. "feh" is from Yiddish, probably 600 years old. ZOG is from the '70s or '80s.

85 scaramouche  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:58:35pm

Hey zombie--how about including some of LGF's most amusing nics, like Delta Burka and Red, White and Jew, and most annoying trolls, (I seem to recall a Rosie O'Donnell's head and a View from Ireland.)

86 D.Gray  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:58:36pm

Great list, but "Bwahahaha/Muwhahaha!" is ancient Internet slang, seen on Usenet at least as far back as a decade ago ...

87 Frank IBC  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 4:58:55pm

Hey zombie--how about including some of LGF's most amusing nics,

Great idea, but that's a whole nother topic. Two of my favorites are "Holden McGroyn" and "ROP really chappin' my hide." We'll do that next time around (list fave nics, not hold groins or chap hides).

And here I figgered that when you heard somebody shout something like "Allahu akhbar" then it was aloha, snackbar. Kiss that place goodbye.

"Paleostinian" was coined by Diana Moon on her first blogspot blog. I don't have a link, because her original blog was wiped, but trust me, it was her word and it spread like wildfire on conservative blogs, including this one.

DailyKos was one of the very few sites that did any serious counterinvestigation into the claims that the documents were word-processed forgeries, through this story and multiple followups, and found that the right-wing blog "forgery!" claims could be disproved pretty easily."

124 Yehudit  Fri, Jan 7, 2005 5:11:45pm
That's better than "pajamahadeen", which is what Toronto Star columninst Antonia "The Beast" Zerbesias called bloggers after Rathergate.

I think "Pajamahadeen" was invented by Jim Gerahty (sp?) from NRO's "Kerry Spot" blog.

Usenet (via Google) provides an easy way to check for pre-LGF uses, since posts are all dated. For instance, "islamofascism" unsurprisingly began to spread in late September 2001, but, Michael Savage notwithstanding, also appears in 1996.

For the most part, I'm just I'm taking my time, catching him whenever he slips up, gathering info. He's no dummy, but he's obviously one of his 'youth movement' cultists.

Any hints on dealing with this critter? Without it erupting into a flamewar?

Pulling the Plug on Jihad TV

The State Department's latest move is a defensive response (or the beginning of one) to a clever terrorist tactic: As Jorisch shows, al-Manar recruits jihadists and gives them ideological fodder; it explicitly encourages attacks on Israeli civilians and American soldiers. Pretty much any way you look at it, it's a weapon in Hezbollah's war — which is also Iran's war, which is also, evidence suggests, al Qaeda's to a significant extent. In short, al-Manar is hardly comparable to an independent news outlet whose views the administration happens to dislike. Shutting down such an outlet would of course be troubling; shutting down al-Manar is not.

"Tin foil hat" is an old police term. Crazy people would call their local police station and say that the CIA was "monitoring their brain with radio waves," and therefore they couldn't sleep. The desk sergeant would just tell them "make a semi-spherical hat from tin foil"—"because CIA scanner rays can't penetrate tin foil." Case solved. Lunatic placated.

Another good reason to check your comp for viruses - your comp could participate in a DDoS attack without your knowing it:

(From Wikipedia)

In a distributed attack, the attacking computer hosts are often personal computers with broadband connections to the Internet that have been compromised by viruses that allow the perpetrator to remotely control the machine and direct the attack, often through a botnet. With enough such slave hosts, the services of even the largest and most well-connected websites can be denied.

I actually prefer the OT thread of the morning, the last one from the previous night. Great news source links, and other pertinent stories such that I do not have to waste my time in waiting for them to be shown on tv. It's a news fix I satisfy, news from around the world, but with less "white noise" one gets from the bombardment the rest of the threads receive. I must say though, OT posts the following morning are almost always On Topic when it comes to islam, its terror, and the dhimmitude practised by many who ignore that ravenous beast in their midst.

Interesting take - I hadn't thought of that. When I'm at the house (eastern time zone), I usually hit the most recent thread by 6 AM EST, just to see what happened while I was asleep. Here, that's not an option, but an absolute necessity. But it can be frustrateting to read through some knock-down, drag-out argument and know that you're way too late to put your own 2 cents' worth in. I find myself commenting on things that were said 8 hours earlier, and of course the original posters never see my responses. Still, one must take what one can get, eh ?

Too many here do not, or cannot, bother reading 'old' threads. Call me a snob, but I always want quality posts, not quantity. And those quality posts can be at the end of a thread, where the rush to post one line "First!" comments is long over.

True, but I sometimes run across something while reading the thread that just screams for a response, which I then post. Only to find out that it was commented on later in the thread. This is an problem especially with long threads. Plus there's the knowledge that the original poster will probably never return to see your response in any case. Doesn't matter how brilliant your response might be, because ain't nobody going to see it. I figure that's why I'm not rich and famous. A day late and a dollar short - the story of my life.

A further comment: With the explosion of this blog thatnks to Dan Rather, there was a time here when a thread could go on for a week. Some great discussions took place on those "dead" threads. On one of those is where I met, and with whom many discussed at length, the poster 'Fuad . . .', an ex-muslim, from Philly, if IIRC. The "Turd" World And The High Priest Vulture Elite

This Embassy has been running 24/7 since the December 26 earthquake and tsunami. Along with my colleagues, I've spent the past several days dealing non-stop with various aspects of the relief effort in this tsunami-affected country. That work, unfortunately, has brought ever-increasing contact with the growing UN presence in this capital; in fact, we've found that to avoid running into the UN, we must go out to where the quake and tsunami actually hit. As we come up on two weeks since the disaster struck, the UN is still not to be seen where it counts -- except when holding well-staged press events. Ah, yes, but the luxury hotels are full of UN assessment teams and visiting big shots from New York, Geneva, and Vienna. The city sees a steady procession of UN Mercedes sedans and top-of-the-line SUV's -- a fully decked out Toyota Landcruiser is the UN vehicle of choice; it doesn't seem that concerns about "global warming" and preserving your tax dollars run too deep among the UNocrats.

Let me plug a print publication here:

POPULAR MECHANICS on the shelf now, has a cover story "Eye in the Sky"

It's about a USMC unit running drone scouts planes of Fallujah and has the kind of chunk style content you just don't see in MSM:

"A minute goes by, The four dark spots crouch in the shadows. On the screen a black ball hits the edge of thebuilding; black chunks go flying. Another black ball hits the target, and then another and another, enveloping the spots. Using an infrared spotlightto illuminat the insurgents, Basher's pilot is pounding away with 105mm artillery shells. Gray smoke rises from the scene.
A black spot breaks out of the smoke. Against the background of the macadam on the street, the man's silhouette stands out plainly. He runs with the speed of a sprinter.
'Ten to one he's headed for the mosque up the street,' Neumann says.
Parchman watches the runner climb a wall. 'He made it. Can't hit him in there."

The issue also has a great article on drywall repair. Highly recommend it.

Well done, I'm impressed.

I find the sections on jihad, treatment of women and apostacy to be especially useful in refuting the islmists' dissembling. The rest codifies the 14th century islamist mindset, and permits context when one reads calls for the establishment of sharia'h in the West.

Where to now? You've got the basic playbook of the Sunni sect-which covers off ~85% of all muslims. One of our co-posters here is ploughing thorugh 'Sirat'ul Rasool' as revised by Ibn Hisham, but I don't fancy reading 1300 pages of mohammedan hagiography. DDD has been around for years, albeit not all that common. It stands for Daddy's Darling Daughter, a girl with a healthy dose of self-esteem from a healthy, loving relationship with a doting daddy. Usually used sarcastically to disparage a ditsy trust fund baby, whose daddy gives her everything but a healthy, loving relationship. I first heard it in Iowa in the mid-1970's, and have run into the expression here and there since. Paris Hilton is the ultimate DDD (sarcastic use).

The recent use here referencing Dhimmicrats threw me a bit. I find the DDD usage above very useful, and wish we'd find something better for Dhims.

Icy danger away from the immediate coast for New England!

Taunton-Boston WSR-88D NexRad Doppler Radar shows the wintry precip!

At 10am local, Boston was just cloudy, and temp was 1C, above freezing, but dewpoint was -5C, meaning when the precip starts evaporational cooling may change the rain over to sleet or ice even in Boston. Worcester is -3C with mixed snow, sleet and freezing rain. NYC area all rain, except far northwest suburbs.

Long range models suggesting Houston may spend all of next weekend below freezing, although winter precip doesn't look too likely.

Meanwhile, still raining in SoCal.

Actually, SoCal is in a bit of a lull, but more exciting winter weather is offshore.

Snow levels as low as 500m in far northern California, nearly 2000m and rising in SoCal (which will add to flodding problems as some snowmelt will add to the floods) but the highest locations near LA that remain all snow will get 1.5 meters of snow!

BTW, that super arctic air that spills into Texas and stalls near Corpus Christi may develop a wave that runs from the Gulf of Mexico and up the East Coast, perhaps giving New York/New England the biggest snowstorm of the year next weekend.

00Z GFS forecast for late Friday night shows potential blockbuster winter storm!

We want to make our children feel . . . that the mere fact of being American citizens makes them better off than if they were citizens of any European country. This is not to blind us at all to our own shortcomings; we ought steadily to try to correct them; but we have absolutely no ground to work on if we don't have a firm and ardent Americanism at the bottom of everything.

It might be a little before your time but "He who shall not be named" was also coined here to be used instead of his handle "ranbuntan"

Later, folks here were using "He who shall not be named" to refer to Michael Savage. But I think the expression is from a long time ago -- sounds like it's from a pulp novel. It didn't originate here, I'm almost sure of it.

Over on another thread, I suggested the coinage GLASGOW to replace the tired ROFL and LOL. Will it take off?

That's a good one, but it's so new that it hasn't even had a chance to enter the lexicon. Similarly, for example, I recently coined "Mosque-itos" to refer to observant Muslims, but that hasn't had a chance yet either. Things need a chance to grow and become popular to make it into the dictionary. So we'll wait on those.

""Splodeydope" has always been a personal favorite of mine. Zombie, the earliest use I can find was in a thread on "suicide bombing" dated April 15, 2002. Lizardoid Jim Treacher posted

"Cowardly murderer who makes most reasonable people hope against hope for the existence of a just God and therefore the eternal torments of Hell for said cowardly murderer." Or maybe "splodeydopes."

I think the words of the post leave it pretty clear that JT should get the credit.

Happy to contribute to the expansion of humankind's knowledge...

-Hey, both of you! Calm down. bigel is a floor wax and a dessert topping.

Hee-hee. I think I hear the "too much fun alarm" going off.

"Moby" was a common geek term in the 80s/90s meaning something great/wonderful/powerful/elegant. The MIT exploding football trick was the canonical moby hack. It also had other meanings, but that was likely the one that musician Moby intended to imply by choosing that name. Ironically, his moonbatism has caused LGF patrons and others to begin using the nam disparagingly, exactly the opposite of its original meaning.

Moral: If you're a dweeb, don't adopt a cool nickname. If you're a dweeb who's good at something (like music) do that thing and remember not to talk in public.

Too bad "body blogitic" never caught on, I could be famous. :)

If I had tons of time, I could put together a collection of the funniest things ever said on LGF, like:

There but for the grace of God (and about 200 IQ points) go I. - The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch

If the category was "missing the point completely", then you just earned yourself a gold star. - Kragar

Does light bend around you? - Jheka

Instead of "What's your sign?" or something like that, do you guys all ask "What's your dosage?" - rightasrain

You are tonights winner of the Don King "Just Making Shit Up" award. Johnny, what do we have for our winner? - DocDublU

You never know when you'll need the help of a man who can disembowel an ox barehanded - Samuel Clemens

Where is Bigel these days?

A few of the "isms" came from the old Jerusalem Post forum well over 4 years ago...

Bwahahaha/Muwhahaha! (always used by The_Teacher)

Islamofascist (coined by a member called Announcer)

Islamic Death Squads (was also coined by Announcer)

This is a great read -- I just spent an hour reading every entry here.

So ... every dictionary has DEFINITIONS. Someone with long LGF experience needs to attach definitions to Zombie's great list(s).

I wish I could ...

Since some are curious, I coined Jordyptian merging the nations-of-origin of those who abruptly became "Palestinians."

Charles used Stupidfada on the front page here.

As documented and applauded here.

Danegerus uses it here. From 5/16/2003.

So we have a widely used term first used at LGF.

#383 hermeneutics,

Some definitions are in the FAQ. I think zombie's update is going to be a massive undertaking.

What about the phrase "he whose name must not be mentioned"

Not a problem! I'm all about the sharing. Use in good health.

I'm STILL trying to popularize the term Quislingcrat, meaning a member of a certain American political party that decided to leave the "loyal" out of "loyal opposition" after 9/11. No copyright or trademark is claimed on this term...all lizardoid minions are free to use it as they see fit.

390 Ol' Southern Boy  Sat, Jan 8, 2005 7:01:58pm

I coined the term "Islamic supremacism" many moons ago here but it never took off. I still think it captures what we're up against. Works on several levels.

Hastur. Lovecraftian evil deity. Early 20th-century pulp horror. AKA Hastur the Unspeakable, The Accursed One, faceless and foul, half-brother of Cthulhu, banished to a dark star near Aldeberan.

Say his name, and he shall appear and use you like the owl used the Tootsie-Roll Pop in the ad... lick, lick, crunch.

(Sure, I post and everybody LEAVES! :)

392 HULUGU  Sun, Jan 9, 2005 12:01:51am

i think i coined "Muslim" but was disputed on that--someone else here created "islogic" which is a personal favorite

393 Mr Pol  Sun, Jan 9, 2005 12:10:10am

I'd claim 'Balestinian beoble' but nobody seems to use it...

394 HULUGU  Sun, Jan 9, 2005 12:19:25am

i meant "Muslim" not "muslim" ---sheesh

395 HULUGU  Sun, Jan 9, 2005 12:21:36am

i keep typing [bigoted word] and it comes out muslim--what gives?

# 360 zombie:

I found numerous references for "Oil For Palaces."

tomgpalmer.com

spartacus

The Globe and Mail

You'd have to check out when the referneces on LGF popped up, after all, it was a good turn of phrase, which is always well liked, and repeated, on lGF.

My vote for most original, and widely used, term from LGF is Darwin Akhbar. Witty, short, and to the point.

# 395 HULUGU:

Charles added a translation program. In that program, M-U-Z-Z-I-E automatically translates to Muslim.

Zombie

Don't know if you are still taking entries...

How about TSM (Terrorist Supporting Media), first reference I see (after a cursory search) from Vulgorilla, here:

"St. Pancake"

Must originate from FZ's St. Alfonzo's pancake breakfast (where I stole the margarine)

So does it really count without acknowledging him?

:-)

Too funny. I may have to print this out and keep it by my desk for inspiration. Impossible to read this and be in a bad mood.

Everybody:

Thanks for all the tips and links. I am noting them all down, and with time I will incorporate them all into the master list. When it's done, it will be a thing of beauty.

Give me some time. Compiling a dictionary is labor-intensive and detail-oriented. But I guarantee you'll love the results.
