LGF

-RetweetBack Like Me

Tue, Jan 11, 2005 at 8:30:21 am PST

Well, Little Green Footballs is back, and I still have one fingernail left! Thanks to all for the concerned emails; unfortunately, since our entire site was down, including email, I didn’t see them until we came back online—at which point several hundred emails all came rushing down the pipe.

LGF has been installed on a separate server with special tools to help prevent malicious exploits. The DOS attack confirms what I wrote a few days ago, that someone out there doesn’t like me; but your emails show that I also have friends, for which I’m enormously grateful.

UPDATE at 1/11/05 8:46:19 am:

I’m also very grateful to Hosting Matters for their professional handling of this situation, showing again that they are second to none in the web hosting business.

UPDATE at 1/11/05 10:42:10 am:

And while I’m in gratitude mode, thanks also to evariste and zorkmidden of Discarded Lies for allowing me to inflict my verbosity on their blog while LGF was down.

Hooray!
We missed you Charles!

I like you Charles.

3 Pro-Bush Canuck  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:32:52am

Charles performs a critical function in a democratic society. Leftists wish to silence those with whom they disagree. That makes them fascists and the enemy in the most literal sense.

4 shan  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:33:06am

I almost had a nervous breakdown the last 2 days!
Glad to see ya back!

5 adamthemadman  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:33:18am

Welcome back. I didn't initially believe that the Jan. 8th attacks were directed at LGF, but now I'm beginning to believe otherwise.

6 Capt. Queeg  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:33:18am

Who did this?

7 imtoast  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:33:19am

I am so glad that you are back. Visiting Discardedlies was ok, but this is home.

8 scott in east bay  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:34:07am

Lord, without LGF yesterday I was so bored I was forced to paint my living room. It looks good, and we're glad you're back, Charles.

9 Jon_force  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:34:18am

It was Mahmood Abbas!

10 PDM  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:34:24am

Welcome back Charles. :) You even have friends out here who didn't email.

And the site is running great. I guess you don't have to eat Morlocks for them to make you stronger.

11 Bob with one O  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:34:30am

Fortunately, lizards have regenerative qualities.

Nice work on Hugh Hewitt last night. It would have been easy (for you) to join the dogpile.

12 davic  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:34:53am

I missed you tremendously. I was concerned my incessant checking of whether you are online would also cause a DOS attack. I was going through serious withdrawals. Please do not do that again. Odd though you would be down on an important day of the CBS report, in which you played a role. Hmmm I wonder what Dan Rather was up to yesterday.

13 Necklace of Shoes  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:35:17am

You can judge the character of a man by his enemies.

14 Americain  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:35:32am

Isn't interesting that the moonbats tried to silence you on the
day that the seeBS report came out?
Hugh Hewitt was talking about how the blogs were too quiet
about the findings of the report. Now that the lizardoids are
back up, I'm sure that will change!

15 sven10077  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:35:38am

well to hear the moonbats tell it FreeSpeech is a dangerous tool that allows the weakminded(you know their core constituency) to be turned into robots...

they are "doing the right thing" in trying to codify their warped morals into the only acceptable thoughts/words...

a "public service" you know

16 Colonel Panik  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:35:56am

Charles,
Glad to hear you've secured your perimeter, digitally speaking.
I hope you and your ISP and the appropriate authorities are able to trace the moonbats who did this back to their cave and drop a legal JDAM on them...

Charles, I was blissfully unaware that you had gone anywhere. This is a result of working the night shift and stumbling blurry-eyed through the day. I missed all the excitement.

20 Golem Akbar  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:37:43am

Welcome back, Charles. I'll repost this thought:
yesterday, it was raining like hell in LA. Couldn't jog. No movies worth seeing (real suckie year). LGF down! Sheesh. The perfect storm.

21 hornet  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:38:20am

LGF (the island of sanity) is back. What a relief for us all. No doubt others out there would not agree, so sad. We are not sooo sooo sorry that we are back up. Thank you Charles, let's go!

22 denbike  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:38:38am

I'm sure that you and Hosting Matters haven't gotten much sleep. Where did this attack come from? The LGF villagers are gathering up torches, tar and feathers.

23 doppelganglander  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:38:45am

"Oh frabjous day! Callou, callay!" We chortled in our joy.

Nifty new preview window, Charles!

24 M. Murcek  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:39:39am

And who might these people be who shout "free speech, free speech," unless it happens to be speech with which they disagree?

Keep up the good work, Charles...

25 christheprofessor  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:39:56am

I thought the prior attack was directed at conservative blogs. This last one just adds to my suspicions...

Glad you are back up and running!

26 Truth Junkie  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:40:11am

#12 Davic

Yeah... that's right...

Dan did take the day off the same time the attack was occuring...

If anybody wants, I can "find" a memo showing what Dan was up to yesterday.

Also:

Charles, I know you are a generally humble guy, so I will just say "Keep up the good work" You have many fans who feel like they are friends.

27 bobbilee  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:40:14am

I don't just love you Charles, I found out yesterday that I need you! I love the rest of you, too!. Feeling better in Virginia and a good day to all.

28 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:40:30am

We love you Charles...oh yes we do...

We don't love anyone...as much as you.

When you're not near us...We're blue...

Oh Charles we Love you...

(Not in a gay way or anything...not that there is anything wrong with that...)

...but your emails show that I also have friends, for which I’m enormously grateful.

And we are enormously, eternally grateful for LGF!

My Little Green Footbalss turned blue yesterday. :-(

I hope that you are successful in finding the kook(s) that are resposible for trying to INFRINGE ON YOUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH and prosecute them.

32 Ward Cleaver  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:42:43am

Hey Charles,

I asked this on a prior topic, but I'll ask again. Has Hosting Matters contacted the FBI about the attack? I would think this qualifies as a cybercrime.

33 mercadorudy  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:42:44am

Glad you are back. What happened?

35 NuclearTinkerbell  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:43:04am

I adore you, Charles. You are a true Neo-Renaissance man. Ewww. Did I just use a Fwench word? Sorry. You know what I mean.
;)

I'm off to hit the tip jar. You never know what you miss until its gone.

36 pbird  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:44:37am

Heh. Forgot my password. Had to guess.

The timing of the thing is unavoidably interesting. Repot comes out, LGF goes down. Hm.

Glad you're back.

37 Sydney Carton  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:45:02am

Any idea on who might be responsible? DOS attacks are criminal.

38 Joel  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:45:11am

Actually the attack was probably orchestrated by the Mossad to throw blame upon the opressed Palestinians. Hasn't the late Arafat claimed that many terror attacks against Jews really was the Mossad's work?

39 Ward Cleaver  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:45:12am

What other blogs were down yesterday?

40 zulubaby  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:45:25am

You know how many people love you, Charles.

Thank G-d LGF is back! And it's running beautifully ...

41 Cato the Elder  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:45:47am

An entire day without Charles and the Minions? I nearly lost my wits.

Fortunately, Instapundit had a note about what was going on, so I didn't have to suspect the worst. Otherwise I might have feared that the Shover Robot finally got to you...!

42 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:46:31am

Thank G-d Zulubaby is back...

I can't survive without my one and only love...

Great to have you back!

44 NTropy  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:47:18am

That was nice - a short reply eaten by a glitch in the system.

Welcome back. I've been wanting to catch up on some of the threads from Sunday like the one on new linky goodness. The occasional geekiness is just one of the things that makes LGF a little more endearing than the rest.

45 justamomof4  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:47:20am

I had no clue as to how addictive lgf is!

Glad you're back!

Like others that have posted at discardedlies . . .the timing of this
DOS attack appears suspiciously vindictive.

46 Charles  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:47:24am

I have no information about who's responsible for the attack, sorry.

47 dquickly  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:47:49am

Welcome back, I missed the truth while your site was down.

48 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:48:34am

51 Paul  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:49:25am

Welcome back Charles, you were missed. Your absence was a matter of some discussion on ther blogs.

It looks as if the moonbats have targeted consevative blogs.

52 Motoko Kusanagi  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:49:46am

I love conspiracy theory, and I think this one has legs. :)

Traditionally, "radioactive" stories are released on Friday, so the firestorm has a chance to die down over the weekend. There were DDOS attacks against LGF last week, which I believe were "probes", or perhaps just unsuccessful attacks. When the last attack finally took LGF offline for 20+ hours, the MSM felt free to release the story, since their greatest enemy was incapacitated.

I also think the attacks on other HM clients were in the nature of "spoiling attacks", designed to obfuscate the true target (Charles) and deny him alternative resources to air his analyses. It is fortunate that 'Lies was well enough designed to support the increased traffic. Most prolly the attackers had counted on alternative blogs crashing under the increased visitor load.

What I want to know is if Hosting Matters can trace the point of origin of the attacks?

Charles, it is truly impressive how detested you are by the MSM. This incident has made it crystal clear that they reguard you as the greatest of their blog-enemies. Their resources, such as they were, were entirely committed to LGF.

53 WriterMom  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:49:50am

Should we start a Lizard Manicure Fund? I'm very concerned about Charles' fingernails.

54 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:50:11am

Charles...in the report did they include LGF as the reason for the truth surfacing...or did they just round up all the BLOGS into one word...BLOGS.

55 David Simon  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:50:37am

There was a definitive spike in my billable hours yesterday. I wonder if my employer will make a connection...

56 metroman  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:50:42am

I was concerned as well. On the day of the CBS report one of the prime new media sites responsible, LGF, goes offline.

Perhaps the UNocrats are still trying to gain control of the internet?

57 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:51:19am

Zulubaby...

And I quote from the Cure..."I will always love you."

58 armytramp  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:51:29am

I love you Charles, in a close and personal way.

Mmm.

59 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:51:58am

"No matter how far away...I will always love you."

60 NuclearTinkerbell  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:52:06am

62 Mentat  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:52:53am

What? Charles, you think someone doesn't like you? Hah!

What an understatement!

Anyway, now LGF is finally back up, we Lizardoids can properly celebrate the major defeat of the MSM at CBS News.

Yahooo!

CBS, I hope you go under. And NYTimes, I hope you go under too! The blog world is going to steam roll you guys. Did you really think that you could tell outright lies and get away with it? Did you really think that you could rely on fraudulent documents in a blatant attempt to influence an election and get away with it?

The one thing that internet is going to do is change how people access information, that is for sure. In my area, I have noticed that television networks now spend big money to advertise their shows on other media, such as subway ads, radio ads and newspaper ads. The MSM is not saying anything publicly yet but I think people have stopped watching as much TV as they used to. The media world has completely fragmented now.

63 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:52:55am

armytramp...you're scaring the poor guy...lol

And so I raise my glass...to Charles, Lizard Master, the richest man in town ;)

66 Andrew B.  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:55:18am

Life without LGF is imposssible !

Hi Everybody !

73 RedWhiteAndJew  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:56:54am

This is an example of the moonbats just trying to spread the misery. They suffer from a different form of DOS (an auto-immune neurological disorder: Denial Of Sensibility; seen in inadequately advanced humans, whose physiology is incapable of supporting higher brain function), so they just needed to share the best they know how.

Thank you for what you do, Charles. Don't let the knuckle(head) draggers get you down.

74 Lily  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:57:03am

Very Glad You Are Back!

If you can't find out who did this, does it mean that it could happen again?

I surely hope not.

75 loggiedog  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:57:40am

I almost wonder if CBS contracted someone to do a DOS attack on LGF in an attempt to get revenge for the Memogate scandal precisely on the day the firings occurred. But that would be sounding like a moonbat conspiracy theorist, right? ;)

76 Infidel in Atlanta  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:57:40am

I have no information about who's responsible for the attack, sorry.

Charles, I wouldn't expect you to post a list of suspects even if you knew who they were. Better to let the Feds handle it. I'm just glad you're back online.

Wasn't Allahpundit down yesterday, too?

78 POL_CAT12  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:59:01am

Charles,

You're back, I'm back, the world is a good place. At first when I tried to get onto LGF I thought it was the mil firewall keeping me out; I'm sorry to hear you've been attacked, hopefully a lizardoid counteroffensive can be mounted!

81 Bob's Kid  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:59:26am

As frustrating as yesterday was, I am really getting a kick out of it. Nobody would bother if LGF wasn't doing important work, and since someone went to sooo much trouble to take it down, it must be making some lll out there in the blue states hopping mad.

God forgive me, that affords me exquisite pleasure.

This massive attack has been an act of war against Freedom of Speech.

It gives us an idea of the mind of our enemies: they want to silence us.

The ideal of the marxist-fascists, friends of the ilsamofascists is to silence every dissenting voice.

Thanks to Stephanie and all the others at Hosting Matters. They were courteous when I enquired what was happening to several blogs I couldn't access and it was HM that told me what was happening and what they were planning to do about it. But not once did she express annoyance at their clients who drew the attack. That's very professional and I'm glad they are showing courage in the face of this obvious attempt to derail Charles publishing THE TRUTH!

At least we know we're getting to them when someone would go to all the trouble it took to pull this attack off. Big ups, Charles! To you and to Hosting Matters!

91 Adrenalyn  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 7:03:29am

Al Gore did it.

After all, HE invented the internet so that makes him the only person qualified to have done this.

92 trendsurfer  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 7:03:35am

The site is running real fast.

93 Poitiers-Lepanto  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 7:03:41am

The Media Matrix has used this attack: they have seen we could not answer and they have not mentioned (except Hannity, but he is unplugged) the Blogosphere, nor LGF.

O'Reilly, in particular, succeeded in talking for ten minutes without mentioning the blogs.

94 bblatt11  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 7:03:44am

Ah...but the chutzpah of the DOS attack had me so frimish? because I had to keep schlepping back to my computer to check the site. All of that work made me want to plotz. From the people who brought you Spanglish, comes Yidlish, a new language for a new century.

Please think about running a thread on the following news release as the technical discovery outlined in it could mean the beginning of the end for the oil ticks. The MSM is barely saying anything about it and I think it is one of the most important technical discoveries announced in the last decade.

New plastic can better convert solar energy
Canadian Press

TORONTO — Researchers at the University of Toronto have invented an infrared-sensitive material that's five times more efficient at turning the sun's power into electrical energy than current methods.

The discovery could lead to shirts and sweaters capable of recharging our cellphones and other wireless devices, said Ted Sargent, professor of electrical and computer engineering at the university.

Sargent and other researchers combined specially-designed minute particles called quantum dots, three to four nanometres across, with a polymer to make a plastic that can detect energy in the infrared.

Infrared light is not visible to the naked eye but it is what most remote controls emit, in small amounts, to control devices such as TVs and DVD players.

It also contains a huge untapped resource -- despite the surge in popularity of solar cells in the 1990s, we still miss half of the sun's power, Sargent said.

"In fact, there's enough power from the sun hitting the Earth every day to supply all the world's needs for energy 10,000 times over,'' Sargent said in a phone interview Sunday from Boston. He is currently a visiting professor of nanotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Sargent said the new plastic composite is, in layman's terms, a layer of film that "catches'' solar energy. He said the film can be applied to any device, much like paint is coated on a wall.

"We've done the same thing, but not with something that just sit there on the wall the way paint does,'' said the Ottawa native.

"We've done it to make a device which actually harnesses the power in the room in the infrared.''

The film can convert up to 30 per cent of the sun's power into usable, electrical energy. Today's best plastic solar cells capture only about six per cent.

Sargent said the advance would not only wipe away that inefficiency, but also resolve the hassle of recharging our countless gadgets and pave the way to a true wireless world.

"We now have our cellphones and our BlackBerries and we're walking around without the need to plug in, in order to get our data,'' he said.

"But we seem trapped at the moment in needing to plug in to get our power. That's because we charge these things up electrically, from the outlet. But there's actually huge amounts of power all around us coming from the sun.''

The film has the ability to be sprayed or woven into shirts so that our cuffs or collars could recharge our IPods, Sargent said.

While that may sound like a Star Trek dream, venture capitalists are keen to Sargent's invention.

Josh Wolfe, managing partner at Lux Capital, a New York City-based venture capital firm, said while such a luxury may be five years away, the technology knows no bounds.

"When you have a material advance which literally materially changes the way that energy is absorbed and transmitted to our devices... somebody out there tinkering away in a bedroom or in a government lab is going to come up with a great idea for a new device that will shock us all,'' he said in a phone interview.

"When the Internet was created nobody envisioned that the killer app (application) would be e-mail or instant messaging.''

Sargent's work was published in the online edition of Nature Materials on Sunday and will appear in its February issue.

There was a definitive spike in my billable hours yesterday.

I would have been quite productive yesterday, if I hadn't spent half the day searching the web to find out where everyone was hanging out...

I started out just searching "LGF" & "littlegreenfootballs" with very disappointing results (eg: LGFwatch). I eventually revised my search method by googling "LGF" plus random lizard names that I could remember (zombie, VtheK, Iron Fist...). Finally got a hit on discarded lies with "LGF zulubaby".

I wonder if the release on Monday morning wasn't an attempt to slow the internet reaction and give CBS the maximum time to spin without much competition; many (most?) bloggers have gone to work then and don't have time to post, as opposed to Friday evening, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Saturday evening, Sunday ...

If the student had been a Democrat and had written an anti-USA screed and the Professor was a Republican (fat chance but it could happen) and forced the kid into therapy, I would consider the behaviour of the professor just as heinous and unacceptable. Your ideological slant is taking you to a faulty conclusion. The moral issue in that story is not the political views that either the student or the professor held but how the professor behaved toward the student. The professor's behaviour toward the student was completely unacceptable.

Hey! Bush's Social Security plan is a nightmare! Bush lied to the country! Sean Penn, as an actor, has as much of a right to his opinion as Ronald Reagan did and Schwatzenager does! We gave Saddam WMD! The rest of the world hates us, and bush can't figure out why!

Sean Penn is as entitled to his opinions, however retarded, as any other American citizen, although I'm curious if he violated US law travelling to Iraq to give Saddam a neck rub before the war.

Proud Loser may be full of crap 9944/100% of the time, but I pride myself on being fair.

I actually started shaking from the withdrawel yesterday. I don't post much, but I lurk EVERY day. I am also off to the tip jar.

OT- Kevin Leffler was on the Frank Beckman show looking for more true and not so flattering stories about Michael Moore for his new movie Shooting Michael Moore. Oddly enough, he's having trouble finding someone to distribute the movie and no one will insure him. The insurance companies have told him that there's a 100% probability that Mikey will sue him and they don't want to be involved. How did such a slob become so "important"? I'm disgusted with 58 million of my countymen.

The San Jose Mercury displayed how clueless the MSM is yesterday. With this attack so public, you would have thought their "Tech Monday" section would say something about it. Since it started several days ago, with big blogs down, not just LGF, that they would have a clue.

Yet this is the headline on an article on page 4E. "Widespread attack on Web likely, Net experts believe." This is like December 8th, 1941 having a headline; ""Japs" might attack", Or September 12, 2001, "Planes crashing into buildings possible danger". Total cluelessness. And this is the paper that serves Silicon Valley!

Or is it that they kkknew and said nothing? Putting on tin hat. Turning face to wall. "Nothing to see here."

I know coincidences happen, but this is just too convenient. Like the DNC & CBS just happened to be working on the same stuff.

Thanks Charles for doing what you do. You are appreciated.

Regarding your most recent post about that student being a Republican, what difference does that make to how he was treated?

To the LLL, being a Republican is reason enough to recommend mandatory therapy. So of course, it matters enormously.

Too bad #146 - Snidelefties-dot-com is gone. He/she/it/they won't get to link to this NRO article comparing the modern left to the movie Robot Monster,

Robot Monster is a notorious 1953 example of incompetent moviemaking that has entered into popular mythology. Even if you never heard of the movie, chances are you have glimpsed Ro-Man himself. He is the man in the gorilla suit wearing an old-fashioned diving helmet topped by two TV antennas.

Robot Monster the movie may be bottom of the barrel for cheap special effects, script, acting, editing, and other such incidentals, but Ro-Man the character transcends his part. He is the die-hard wing of the Democratic party contesting the Ohio vote: "A miscalculation in the 22nd category of 16 billionths." He is the politically correct college administrator complaining about the uncanny persistence of conservative students: "Great Guidance, I do not understand how they survived the deadly Calcinator C-Ray!" He is Howell Raines, Dan Rather, and Michael Moore swelling with power and proud confusion, where would-be seriousness spills over into the haplessly ridiculous.

Mentat #114,

This story was discussed at Slashdot yesterday. See this particular thread, where one poster mentions he met one of the authors of the report. The actual achievement was a more modest gain in efficiency. Nevertheless, nanoresearch on solar technology is just beginning, so it is possible these or similar levels could be achieved fairly soon. The spectacular breakthrough will be the lowering of cost this type of solar cell represents. If they can go above 10% efficiency for a cell this cheap and easy to manufacture, then you will have the beginnings of a revolution in the construction industry, and energy industry, at large. Having 30% efficiency at this cost with the ability to put solar cells almost anywhere, including on clothing, as the article says, would be outrageous and would change virtually everything.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder - yes - but in the case of LGF and Charles, the addicted hardly need the demonstration, at least this addict doesn't. Thanks much to Charles and HM for the work to get the site back up.

For those of you who have never been the target of attacks like this, you can't know how bad it is for Charles and HM. I am most impressed by the support Hosting Matters gives Charles.

I and several sites I had were targets. One site was under constant attack for 2 years and the other for three years. I was the unlucky recipient personally on and off (mostly on) for most of five years. One site was a conservative site that had what might be termed a blog section (except the term wasn't in use then). The site had the hightest traffic figures of any of the sites hosted by my then ISP. I ran the site for a client but ended up being a major contributor to the content as well as my function as the "webmaster". The other site was totally different and solely my responsibility - the traffic and controversy associated with that one was even higher - I don't intend to be mysterious , it would just take too long to explain it.

Anyway, here's a list of some of the things that happened to me and others involved: dos attacks, "bombs" sent to our ISP, working with the FBI to catch the bad guys - never did (bite lip to prevent commenting), a bug placed in a telephone company box down the road that serviced our home (not by the good guys), numerous daily emails containing viruses, hijacked email addresses which were used to send bogus, damaging emails in my name, a successful inside job at the ISP which allowed my business domain name to expire and be snapped up by a porno creep, an attempted break-in and, like Charles' problem, I got signed up for every undesireable service the 'net had to offer from spammers to breast enhancement peddlers. Someone even managed to use one of my email addresses to send a huge spam mailing - that was ghastly as the replies and autoreplies from the recipients came flooding into one of my mail boxes. No fun, believe me. That happened four years ago and there wasn't much info around that helped me to deal with it. Dealing with all the problems wasn't cheap btw.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know how much hassle Charles and HM are dealing with right now by relating some of my experiences. Also want to state that my husband and I are about to set up new websites for ourselves, our businesses and various sites for clients. Because of the way Hosting Matters has supported Charles "in his hour of need" we will be doing our business with them.

Any of you who are looking for a host might consider doing the same. You support them, you support Charles by showing them how valuable he is as a referral tool - though they already obviously do appreciate him.

One more thing - we emailed HM with a question about their services and got a response from them in less than an hour, despite the fact that they were dealing with all kinds of problems yesterday. These people are true professionals.

Charles - keep your chin up and take the advice on personal security seriously, please.

In a nutshell, a Denial Of Service attack is an automated search that floods the server with such massive numbers of page requests that it is so tied up that no one else can access it. Multiple computers are used (with a Trojan Horse to highjack them, IIRC) to amplify the effect.

That may be oversimplified, so perhaps someone more tach-savvy can elaborate.

252 Mauser  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 9:18:45am

Psyduck, a DOS (Denial of Service) attack is easier to understand if you think of it this way. Imagine running a program on your computer that tells your modem to dial the phone number of someone you don't like and hang up every ten seconds.

The person you don't like would be completely unable to use his phone, it would be ringing constantly, and he couldn't pick up his phone to dial out because chances are it would be answering at the time.

DDOS, or Distributed Denial Of Service would be like getting a whole lot of people to run the modem dialing program. Sometimes this is done via a Virus or trojan program so the people "helping" don't even know they're doing it.

Robot Monster

One of the all-time great bad science fiction movies. Plan 9 from Outer Space has had better PR over the years, but it can't beat Robot.

yochanan #264:

sort of like being pro american and trying to say you are a liberal too

I'm both (pro-)American and a liberal. And a proud one (on both counts) to boot.

272 megscole64  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 10:43:34am

#271 - Q

I agree...I'm pro-American and liberal...but maybe not the definition of liberal that most people think of. I'm the type of liberal that actually wants to liberate, who wants to live her life without gov't, and lets others live their lives w/o all the dang regulation.

Unfortunately the term liberal has been twisted over the last 40 years. Now it means un-American, Christian bashing, Commi-Sympathizer...at least it does when I hear it. :-) And I picture a pot smoking, birkenstock wearing, Evergreen hippy student (and I love birkenstocks!).

Okay...don't yell at me...I know not all "liberals" are like the summary above. I even work with some of them. But a lot of them are.

273 sonofsheldon  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 10:44:42am

My family is thrilled that I'm no longer walking around the house complaining that, "LGF is offline. LGF is offline. LGF is offline."

274 yochanan  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 10:50:55am

Truman idea of liberal and michael moores idea of liberal would also fit the def.
truman was anti communist and michael moore is not

if you were dancing at truman wedding you could not dance at michael moores

275 will_not_back_down  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 10:59:27am

Very glad site is back and on the wire. Missed my required daily reading and lizoid comments and perspective on the days events both locally and globally. Keep up the great work Charles and may the moorlocks suffer the frozen keyboard curse.

276 Q  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 11:27:06am

megscole 64 (#272):

Yes, exactly. Genuine liberals now have to precede their self-definition with a qualifier "classical" or some such.

The popular designation of "liberal" has been hijacked by the authoritarian marxists -- not without the acquiescence from the conservatives who have gleefully seized onto "liberal" as a negative label.

For the record, I don't buy the "conservatives are the true liberals" flapdoodle, either. Let's face it, some American conservatives stand for some pretty illiberal things.

Well, unlike a Nazi-burned book, LGF comes back, better than ever.

Reminds me of Ray Bradbury's Farenheit 451, where the bookburners are thwarted in an ingenious way.

Last year, Ray Bradbury demanded an apology from filmmaker Michael Moore for lifting the title of the book without permission, and he said he wanted the documentary "Fahrenheit 9/11" to be renamed. I wonder what ever happened with that.

Morlocks be damned!

#276 Q

See, there's no disagreement at all. :-)

I think the extreme so called conservatives are no such thing...but rather as you say very 'illiberal'.

The definition of conservative to me is someone who wants to maintain personal traditional values without government influence or regulation...it's someone who wants to protect the nation and standards by which it was founded.

I'm sure someone has a much better and more eloquent definition. :-)

280 tillsville  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 11:52:41am

Welcome back Charles. I, like many of your readers, was lost without LGF. I agree that you must be doing something right and getting the truth out for someone to attack you. You do have many friends.

281 Lman  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 11:55:21am

I was blind but now I see. Welcome back.

282 Jesusland Joe  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 12:08:26pm

Whew, Charles, you are a breath of fresh air! I'm glad you're back. As for the morlocks, well, the hell with them!

283 tuffbeingright  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 12:15:48pm

285 EthelCarol  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 12:22:37pm

I usually don't post here but I just had to add my welcome back comments to Charles.

Charles, you were so missed; your services to this country and its citizens are necessary. Therefore the people who disabled you are traitors and should be hunted down and tried and when convicted--imprisoned forever.

286 Killer Tomato  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 12:27:33pm

It's back!
It's back!
Thank you, thank you, thank you...

[sobs with relief]

287 Earl  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 12:36:30pm

Islamists; Jew-haters; the MSM; social-science and MESA academics; ad infinitum down the moonbat gene chain- lotsa people out there hate you, Charles, and the work you are doing here.

This is a good thing... congrats on your near-death experience and resurrection.

Since my ISP went kaboom, I was not aware of the problems that you were experiencing at the same time.
I felt as though I was going cold turkey. I can imagine how you felt, being responsible for all the cold turkeys, er, Lizardoids.

Where is the ACLU? The FHA? It's supposed to be illegal to discriminate in home loans for ANY reason, let alone based on religion.
This "bank's" license and federal backing needs to be withdrawn immediately.
Maybe these Muslim's need to see a few referendums in the next election like the gay marriage thing: No Islamic, or any other ethnic/religious law, in the US, ONLY American law.
It's simple, if they want to live under Islamic law, they are in the wrong country and need to go back where the legal and religious "culture" is more to their liking. It isn't as if the US is facing any shortage of immigrants.

291 katkin  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 1:47:54pm

Silver lining in clouds...
Thanks to the DDoS attack, I ended up finding the Discarded Lies blog. It has been bookmarked.

And yes, despite being an irregular reader, I also had a bit of LGF withdrawal yesterday.

292 ibmkeyboard  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 2:28:59pm

294 Attilla the Dutchman  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 2:43:45pm

Glad you're back Charles. Time to hit the tip jar

295 ms heather  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 3:10:11pm

Glad LGF is back.

Surely the Leftard Lovers of the First Amendment *or* the Religion of Peace hadn't ANYthing to with it?

Surely not! / sarcasm.

Viva la Revolucion Blogger!

296 Blackacre  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 4:04:02pm

Charles,
It's great to have you back. (And, as of last night, I now know where evariste has been spending his time.)

297 BurtB  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 4:40:14pm

Welcome back Charles.

I love you, maaan! (not that there is anything wrong with that)

The DOS is proof that you are on the right track.

as stated before:
Morlocks be damned!

298 JP  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 5:33:56pm

Charles - thank you for the service that you provide our nation.

299 realwest  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 5:52:35pm

CHARLES - congrats on being back - I missed LGF like hell. I was also in contact with Hosting Matters (mostly Stephanie) offering whatever help (as a lawyer, pro bono, God knows not as a techie) on several occasions and I'd like to know:
a. Is Hosting Matters trying to find out who did this?
b. If they find out will they tell you?
c. If you find out will you tell us?

300 realwest  Tue, Jan 11, 2005 6:01:35pm

#51 Paul - you said "Your absence was a matter of some discussion on ther blogs."

Who is the "their" that you're referring to?
