-RetweetCBS Alters the Report

Thu, Jan 13, 2005 at 2:57:26 pm PST

Get a load of this.

CBS has altered the PDF file for their report on Memogate, to prevent copying and pasting.

Here’s the page at CBS News, with modified PDF file: CBS Ousts 4 For Bush Guard Story.

Rather obviously (pardon the pun), this is aimed at making it harder for blogs to criticize the report, by stopping them from copying and pasting sections to illustrate points.

Did CBS think no one would notice?

We got a PDF copy before CBS altered it; here it is.

And here is an early copy of Appendix 4, which has also been altered at the CBS site.

UPDATE at 1/13/05 4:55:27 pm:

LGF reader Angel Piper reports that whoever turned off copying/pasting in the CBS documents also forgot to set a password on the files.

This means you can “unlock” the documents yourself if you have Adobe Acrobat 5 (the full version, not just the reader).

CBS: Pathetic ... and lame!

Pretty amazing that they think they can get away with releasing a report(which would not have even been done if the blog had not denuded their 'reporting') and then alter it to keep said report from being dissected.

Memo to Thunder Dan:

CBS can make get fake copies and call them real, but they won't let people copy their real but false explanation!

7 Studsup  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:02:31pm

I was prevented from getting to the second link by a Lizard with a stop sign. Can someone describe the differences? Regardless, how CBS could present this report with a new document, when the gist of the story is about the authenticity of the document that was the basis of the TANG smear is simply an outrage.

29 Studsup  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:17:19pm

My bad, I had thought that this issue related to the substitution of appendices or other material (i.e. the new TANG memo vs. the original crumpled TANG memo). Fun work I suppose to see if any of the text changed. Still, for an organization being caught playing fast and loose with computer generated material, subsituting the report in any respect, without disclosure, suggests that Danny Boy hasn't learned any lessons at all.

Stick a fork in them, they're done.

35 Mary in LA  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:21:06pm

They can protect their PDF files as much as they like, but that won't stop the blogosphere. Hillbilly Geek is quite right -- "Print Screen" still works, on all platforms. Besides that, Mac OS X has a "save as PDF" feature which virtually prints the file to a PDF file -- I'll have to try this to see if the PDF image thus captured has the same attributes as the original. (The shareware utility "Print to PDF" does the same thing for Mac OS 9 and below.)

And, in the worst case, one could take a picture of the screen with a digital camera, or print it out and run the hard copy through a scanner with OCR.

Ve haff vays!

36 snellenr  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:21:48pm

Charles, do you have copies of all of the Appendices & exhibits, as well? Haven't checked to see if they've been "secured" yet...

37 hm  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:21:51pm

The "Submission" video Van Gogh put together was fantastic, though. Has anyone else seen it? The girl in the video was afraid to confront her husband about his brother raping her since it would dishonor the husband. I just read the other day that an Moslem in the USA may possibly get off of killing his wife since he "honor" killed her after his cousin or something raped her. The defense is claiming he didn't know OUR version of right from wrong because of his religion...I can't remember where I read that eerily similar tale...Savage, maybe?

Quoth Curtis:

I was able to save the report to my hard drive, and then remove security. They have not imposed a password.

That's good to know!

However, just FYI, as a matter of forensics, the act of changing the security settings on the file would be enough to make the file inadmissible as evidence in a court of law. (In case you were thinking of suing CBS... ;-) Seriously, I'd love to see somebody sue CBS's pants off, but I don't know who would have sufficient standing, not to mention enough money, to do it successfully.)

Any up-and-coming young legal or law-enforcement lizards looking for a specialty? Digital information law and computer crime investigation are very promising fields...

45 theparson  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:29:00pm

The only "smoking gun" needed to file criminal charges against CBS and this band of goons is found on page 61 of the report.

Today I am going to send the following hypothetical scenario to a reliable,
trustable editor friend of mine . . .
What if there was a person who might have some information that could
possibly change the momentum of an election but we needed to get an
ASAP book deal to help get us the information?

Not only shows a quid pro quo but, more importantly, it shows conclusively that CBS was intentionally attempting to manipulate the outcome of a presidential election!

46 Charles  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:29:03pm

snellenr: it looks like the exhibits and appendices have also been altered. I have an early copy of Appendix 4 (linked above), but I didn't save all of them.

52 CalipHater  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:32:16pm

What a bunch of idiots! Haven't they heard of hitting print screen, printing the document or using a screen capture program? Obviously this would make it harder since you would have to type out what you captured but their efforts are pointless.

Someone definitely needs to distribute a Word document (how ironic) of their report to the various blogs so they can illustrate their criticisms.

61 Rev. Churchmouse  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 1:40:12pm

Just because I'm a Churchmouse doesn't mean I don't know nothin' about geeky stuff:

Go to [Link: www.efax.com...]
Find your way to the download for the free version- make sure you get efax messenger plus. ( they make it much easier to find the pay version, naturally enough)

Then, after software install, take any pdf file you like-- select print, print it to efax ( efax sets itself up as a printer driver, and you print anything to it the same as selecting your usual printer)

Open the file with efax mesenger and you can cut and paste to notepad, wordpad, any wordprocessor.

Bonus: The whole point of efax service is they give you a phone number ( free) which you give out as a 24/7 always on fax number to any and everyone who may want to fax you something.

The fax is converted to an attachment readable by efax software and emmailed to you. ( free)

Their whole point, naturally enough, is that you'll decide that you want to take advantage of their pay services- you might- but the free fax number and free software and free services serve a number of purposes quite well.

C BS continues to display an utterly underwhelming knowledge of technology. If it took about 10 minutes to figure out how to re-create their forged documents how long did they think their disabling of copy/paste would last if they didn't even bother to password protect it?

We frequently hear pundits praise the forgiving nature of Americans, when culprits (often errant politicians) get out in front of a bad situation, and fess up and apologize from the outset. CBS obviously never took note. If Rather had just come clean in Sept, this would be a non-issue.

It’s almost as if they’re bending over backwards to keep this story alive as long as they can.

114 Andrew B.  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 2:24:13pm

OMG! I almost forget to share this story with all of you...here it goes.

This happened the other night.

I invited a few friends out to eat and hang out. We get to the resturant and we are seated next to a group of women who appear to be in their late 30's or early '40s. I couldn't help but overhear their conversation...(considering I was right next to them)

So they are discussing what happened over in Indonesia...saying how terrible it was and yadda yadda yadda...talking about the mudslides in California and everything bad in the world today.

GUESS who them BLAME EVERYTHING ON? Guess.

SHOCKER OF THE DAY...BUSH.

Yes...my fine non-feathered minions...they proceeded in ALL honesty that BUSH was the cause of the earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, death, malaria, starvation, etc...

I was like are you fucking kidding me?

They then proceed to talk about how the "NEGATIVE ENERGY" from this "ADMINISTRATION" was the cause of all this.

I was floored. Even my friends that I was with (who are Liberals), couldn't believe how stupid these women sounded.

I thought I would share that little story with you all...

Carry on...:)

It might interest you, Charles, to know that the Boston Globe article avoids mentioning the role of weblogs. The New York Times does mention that "web logs" were involved, and that some of the most damaging criticism came from "typeface experts." I guess they couldn't bring themselves to say that it was a weblogger who was also a typeface expert, let alone cite you, Free Republic's BB, or Powerline.

I think they're hearing footsteps behind them.

Here is a little something to put on your wish list -

DREAD Weapon System

Imagine a gun with no recoil, no sound, no heat, no gunpowder, no visible firing signature (muzzle flash), and no stoppages or jams of any kind. Now imagine that this gun could fire .308 caliber and .50 caliber metal projectiles accurately at up to 8,000 fps (feet-per-second), featured an infinitely variable/programmable cyclic rate-of-fire (as high as 120,000 rounds-per-minute), and were capable of laying down a 360-degree field of fire.

CBS still hasn’t figured out the ‘net yet. This is my prediction of the news media and its continuing degradation. This report by CBS don’t mean squat, they fired four people, they might create a new ethics department, they might not, either way business will continue on because the news media, like the academics, is staffed almost entirely with liberals. Why will anything change after this scandal? Everyone is still making money. If CBS’s ratings drop low enough they might change, but it will take an economic downturn in the news media business before anything will change. The media likes things the way they are. Why should they change just because they got caught?

149 daverx  Thu, Jan 13, 2005 2:59:48pm

Just a caution...

When I tried today to save a copy of the .pdf I saved on January 10, I was warned that I could not save anything but the original. It said if I made any changes they would not be saved (even though I had not made any) but I COULD save a COPY. That seems like a fair deal to me, and after all how could one get luckier than getting a fair deal from CBS?

Is this message perhaps what folks who are talking about "no saving copies " are encountering? Granted, it sounds like some are encountering more than that, but I hope we aren't interpreting the "can only save a copy" message as more restrictive than it actually is. I can cut and paste from the January 10 .pdf too, but perhaps later ones have this disabled?

Anyway, jolly fellow that I am, I find it exceptionally humorous to be lectured by CBS about saving only legitimate copies of a document! Now who among us can say they don't have a sense of humor!? Let us be fair ...it is surely only a sense of honor that they lack.

They are trying to divert attention from the real issues - the source of the documents and the DNC connection to them. The FBI (or the Texas Rangers) ought to have a nice long talk with Burkett and his attorney, rattle them with the prospect of time in the slammer, and get some decent answers. Do the same with Mary and Joe. Then talk with Dan. Better yet do it with all at the same time in different venues. This makes Watergate look like sandbox.

in this thread where I examined the newly released 2b.pdf using Photoshop and found what I believe to be evidence that CBS participated in the document forgery process.

As of now, the experiment no longer works because when you attempt to drop the altered 2b.pdf file into Photoshop, you are prompted for a password:

It seems that CBS no longer wants the public to be able to able to examine the newly released copies of the documents with a graphics editor.

Never fear about password protected files...someone, somewhere, has a tool to open or crack them.

One example is the Passware suite of password recovery utilities at LostPasswords.com.

(Don't bother downloading the free demo; it works only on passwords of two digits - I have the full suite, and if someone needs a .pdf file opened, they can email me)

cBS doesn't want the reader to print or cut and paste the file. They also have files disabled from search engines like Google (so you can't search for a phrase in the document).

BTW I second the motion for pursuing charges of military document fraud against Burkett as well as the gathering bloodbath against Rather.

181 yochanan  Fri, Jan 14, 2005 5:35:43am

I do not attribute this to bad faith. I attribute it to (as Marx would say) false consciousness -- contracted by living in the liberal media cocoons of New York, Washington and Los Angeles, in which any other worldview is simply and truly inconceivable. This myopia was most perfectly captured by Pauline Kael's famous remark after Nixon's 1972 landslide: "I don't know how Richard Nixon could have won. I don't know anybody who voted for him."

Multiple polls of the media elite have confirmed Kael's inadvertent sociological insight. One particularly impartial poll, taken by the Freedom Forum in 1996, found that of 139 Washington bureau chiefs and congressional correspondents, 89 percent supported Bill Clinton in the previous election, vs. 7 percent for George H.W. Bush. The rest of America went 43 percent to 37 percent.

Some argue that personal allegiance does not matter because it is possible to be partisan at home and yet consciously bias-free at work.

Possible, yes. Actual? The Project for Excellence in Journalism did a careful study of mainstream media stories in September and October. The numbers are stunning.

To take one example, Oct. 1-14, 2004: Percent of stories about Bush that are negative -- 59 percent. Percent of stories about Kerry that are negative -- 25 percent. Stories favorable to Bush? 14 percent. Favorable to Kerry? 34 percent.

That is not a difference. That is a chasm. And you do not have to be a weatherman to ascertain wind direction. When, in February 2003, Gallup asked Americans their perception of media bias, 45 percent said the media were too liberal, 15 percent said they were too conservative. That's 3 to 1.

Bias spectacularly, if redundantly, confirmed by Rathergate. All that is missing is a signed confession.
