OK - on a more serious note - Wall Street Journal Editorial Page has a lead editorial (subscription to a WSJ newsletter like Best of Web needed or try BugmeNot) that asks - 'Did Eason Jordan really have a good reason to quit CNN?'

In the editorial - the right wing blogosphere is taken to task for it's pressure on Easongate and for the irresponsible statements made by Jordan at Davos - which they repeatedly remind us - Jordan immediately backpedaled from.

At least they reference 1 previous statement by Jordan, where he admitted that he / CNN spiked stories in order to stay in the good graces of Saddam Hussein - and rightfully say that was a reason for Jordan to be terminated from his position at CNN.

There have also been some cries of 'McCarthyism' related to Easongate.

Well, Congressman Barney Frank was very concerned over Jordan's comments. So was Senator Chris Dodd. Panel Moderator David Gergen has gone both ways on the issue (what a surprise) - and the WEF will not release the transcript or tape of the panel discussion. If this was as benign as is claimed - where is the tape?

Still, this is partially about this one event, and also partially about a history of irresponsible comments / accusations / decisions by Eason Jordan that the WSJ doesn't seem to acknowledge.

MSM is really starting to fear the power of the blogs. Perhaps that is why they roll out the big canard - 'McCarthyism'?

There's almost nothing on CNN or FOX about Eason Jordan today. Has anyone else noticed?

There was a lot of resentment over his disclosure of the role CNN had played in covering Saddam's treatment of his own and CNN staff and not only that cover-up but the continuing collusion with the Saddam regime whereby the west and specifically, the Bush Administration, encountered huge resistance to their efforts in the war and reconstruction of Iraq from disinformation and grudging admissions by CNN. Defense of Bret Stephens and Eason Jordan!

That may be old-fashioned damage control. But it does not speak well of CNN that it apparently allowed itself to be stampeded by this Internet and talk-show crew. Of course the network must be responsive to its audience and ratings. But it has other obligations, too, chief among them to show the good judgment and sense of proportion that distinguishes professional journalism from the enthusiasms and vendettas of amateurs.

No doubt this point of view will get us described as part of the "mainstream media." But we'll take that as a compliment since we've long believed that these columns do in fact represent the American mainstream. We hope readers buy our newspaper because we make grown-up decisions about what is newsworthy, and what isn't.

We started receiving calls from outraged Libyan diplomats who wanted to know how CNN could possibly hang up on their great leader, and so I still didn't believe it. I thought it was a prank.

So, I said, "Well, if that really is your great leader, Mr. Gadhafi, we would ask that you put up a satellite feed so we can see him." And so, an hour or so later, up popped Moammar Gadhafi from his tent in Tripoli, Libya. It was really him.

And I said to him, "Mr. Gadhafi, where did you learn to speak such good English?"

And he said, "Well, I watch CNN."

Well we can schput about Castro all we want but it's prudent to recognize he beat the Yale wet-behind-the-ears Kennedy boys silly. And handily. We should ponder why and make sure it does not happen again with more of our leaders.

First, kill all the telling details! WaPo and CNN's Howard Kurtz emails to explain why he revised his Saturday Eason Jordan piece to cut out the juiciest, most suggestive detail of the "gossip about Jordan's personal life." (See before and after.)

For the Record

I compressed that paragraph about Eason Jordan's social life, without a word o advice from anyone, for one reason. I was trying to squeeze in several interviews I had done after the first edition into my story for later editions, and given dead-tree space limitations, was literally going line by line to save room. The first-edition story was published, but I thought it important to include more voices from the blogosphere for later editions.

a) He didn't bury the lede. He removed the lede entirely due to "space limitations"! b) I take Kurtz at his word. But nobody can speak for their subconscious (otherwise it wouldn't be subconscious). That's why there are normally prophylactic rules against massive conflicts of interest. Maybe kausfiles could launch a lucrative spinoff, kurtzfiles, devoted entirely to WaPo's media critic explaining to his readers the non-corrupt reasoning behind his seemingly pro-CNN reporting decisions. [You're already there--ed Soft launch! Next issue, "A Salute to Jonathan Klein!" Tribute ads accepted.]

c) You don't have to get actual 'words of advice' from someone to be influenced by them--to worry about how they will react. d) We don't kill widows around here: "Going line by line to save room." I used to do that! As Kurtz notes, it's a print thing. You don't have to do it in cyberspace. There's plenty of room. Which raises an issue: If Kurtz is cutting highly relevant information in order to squeeze his piece into the printed, hand-delivered version of the Post, why not at least publish the complete version on the Web? Doesn't the failure to take advantage of the Web's extra space put dead tree papers in the normally-futile position of actually suppressing a superior competitor (the full Web versions of what reporters produce)?

Update: I disagree with Instapundit, who decorously argues:

targeting parts of people's lives that don't have to do with the story -- like, say, Eason Jordan's love life -- seems inappropriate to me, and likely to lend support to the bloggers-as-lynch-mob caricature.

The problem is a) Eason Jordan's love life did have to do with the story. According to even the self-bowdlerized Kurtz it's why he lost his job--i.e. why he wasn't allowed to apologize profusely for his Davos remarks and carry on, which as Instapundit notes is otherwise a mystery; b) Jordan got into trouble, according to David Gergen, because he was "deeply distraught" over the deaths of journalists in Iraq. Why would his emotions get the better of his rationality? Mightn't it help answer the question if he's been involved with the widow of a journalist who's been killed covering the Middle East? ... I defend gossiping about people's love lives even when it's not obviously relevant to a particular story. That's a tougher case to make--Instapundit's right about the human cost of losing a private "backstage." But it's not this case. ... 12:26 P.M.

While the two newspapers I read - one at home, one at work - were both liberal-leaning, it was enlightening to see the same story, same facts, reported from different perspectives.

I have to say that the only person in the MSM I have read that has done a credible - if less than perfect - job of covering this is Howard Kurtz. Space/time constraints both may have hindered the depth of reporting he could have done, but he was fair with what he had to work with. Even when he covered the Jeff Gannon case, he was fair. He said he thought the story was that the left-wing bloggers had gone after him not on substance but on a personal level. Not as thorough a job as I'd like to see, all things considered, but a damn sight better than anyone else has done.

This particular battle is early in the war for accountability from the MSM. I saw Jarvis' open invite to Bill Keller (NYT), which is fine, but where the hell is Okrent? He NEVER addressed the Sarah Boxer dust-up that I saw (Arts pages and all that - besides, she's not Frank Rich).

This isn't over by a long shot. And what on earth was the editorial judgement at the NYT that placed this story on the Business section? Front page, yeah, but the resignation of the head honcho of the News Divsion of CNN for remarks he may have made about the US Military murdering journalists is A-section frontpage news.

The MSM is running scared. Bloggers are beholden to no one. They don't party over at Sally & Ben's.

One of the most non-descript individuals who ever drew a breath used to have the entire neighborhood over to his basement to show movies (you see, he was a projectionist). "The Sands of Iwo Jima", "The Gene Krupa Story" and similar flicks were shown regularly.

He wasn't into little kids, or porn shit, or any other dumbshit stuff. He was into projecting movies for entertainment (and God he dug it, as did we).

Along with failing to criticize Castro upon his return, Spielberg also said that he felt at home in Cuba and hoped to go back many times. I never trusted the little buggers because if Castro allowed their reports to be broadcast by his minions, they had litle is any cradibility, if not communist leaning. Thank goodness for your community. You help balance out the Jewish moonbat community in South Florida [East Coast]. I grew up in Sarasota. I could talk to Cuban-Americans, real patriots who love the United States for the most part. I'm not talking about blind obedience, just a willingness to consider the possibility that the U.S. has some good qualities and institutions.

Anyway, I haven't soiled LGF with this except to defend myself, it's been on our blog only; Iron Fist continues to post nasty remarks on LGF about zorkmidden and I and as about 80-100000 people a day read this, I'm rather compelled to defend myself and bring the fight home to him, since he insists on continuing to keep this alive. He had the opportunity to post on our blog in his own defense and didn't take it. He still has that opportunity; we won't censor or delete or edit anything he says, the same way we don't with anything anyone else says. The fact of the matter is that aside from insults he has nothing to say in his own defense except for weak excuses because if he did, he'd have said it.

I only appear here to defend myself. Iron Fist's martial arts training doesn't appear to have served him well, because he keep starting fights he can't win.
