-RetweetCongressman Says Rove Planted CBS Memos

Sun, Feb 20, 2005 at 3:12:27 pm PST

Yesterday Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) hosted a community forum in Ithaca, New York, on The Future Of Social Security.

An LGF reader was present in the audience and happened to be recording as Rep. Hinchey launched into a barking moonbat conspiracy rant worthy of Democratic Underground, telling the audience he believed the fake CBS memos were planted by Karl Rove to discredit Dan Rather, and divert attention from President Bush’s “draft dodging.”

When our reader asked Hinchey if he had evidence for these charges, he first said, “Yes, I do,” but when asked a second time he admitted he did not.

Our reader pressed the issue, “Don’t you think it’s irresponsible to make charges like that?” Hinchey replied, “No, I don’t, I think it’s very important to make charges like that ... I think it’s very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can, and I’m willing, as most people are not, to step forward in situations like this and take risks.”

And the crowd burst into applause and cheering.

Here’s the audio. (MP3, 2.7 MB.)

UPDATE at 2/20/05 4:48:20 pm:

Courtesy of LGF operative zombie (who is not the operative who recorded Rep. Hinchey’s rant), here is a full transcript of the recording:

***

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY): Well, you know, they are manipulating the media, they did it in the very beginning through intimidation. They would intimidate the people in the, uh, in the press conference. And ... they would ask — they would allow questions to be asked only of people that they knew were going to ask the right kind of questions, from their point of view. And, you know, that has its effect, had, had its effect on people. People have been — people in the media have been intimidated. The media has changed in the last four years. People have changed in the last four years. They’ve had a very very direct, aggressive attack on the, on the media, and the way it’s handled. Probably the most flagrant example of that is the way they set up Dan Rather. Now, I mean, I have my own beliefs about how that happened: it originated with Karl Rove, in my belief, in the White House. They set that up with those false papers. Why did they do it? They knew that Bush was a draft dodger. They knew that he had run away from his responsibilties in the Air National Guard in Texas, gone out of the state intentionally for a long period of time. They knew that he had no defense for that period in his life. And so what they did was, expecting that that was going to come up, they accentuated it: they produced papers that made it look even worse. And they — and they distributed those out to elements of the media. And it was only — what, like was it CBS? Or whatever, whatever which one Rather works for. They — the people there — they finally bought into it, and they, and they aired it. And when they did, they had ’em. They didn’t care who did it! All they had to do is to get some element of the media to advance that issue. Based upon the false papers that they produced.

Audience Member: Do you have any evidence for that?

Congressman Hinchey: Yes I do. Once they did that —

Audience: [Murmuring]

Congressman Hinchey: ...once they did that, then it undermined everything else about Bush’s draft dodging. Once they were able to say, ‘This is false! These papers are not accurate, they’re, they’re, they’re false, they’ve been falsified.’ That had the effect of taking the whole issue away.

Audience Member: So you have evidence that the papers came from the Bush administration?

Congressman Hinchey: No. I — that’s my belief.

Audience Member: OK.

Congressman Hinchey: And I said that. In the very beginning. I said, ‘It’s my belief that those papers, and that setup, originated with Karl Rove and the White House.’

Audience Member: Don’t you think it’s irresponsible to make charges like that?

Congressman Hinchey: No I don’t. I think it’s very important to make charges like that. I think it’s very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can. And I’m willing — and most people are not — to step forward in situations like this and take risks.

Audience: [Clapping and cheering.]

Congressman Hinchey: I consider that to be part of my job, and I’m gonna continue to do it.

nice use of "essential truth"; that is what keeps getting them in trouble.

This guy is a true Democrat...first he has proof that Rove planted the forged doc, then he doesn't have proof. I said this on a thread yesterday: if Rove wanted to plant fake memos, he'd have tried to damage the Kerry campaign by distributing something that exposed Kerry's own questionable service record. Rove would not have planted a fake document about Bush- a document which fed Dem./liberal fantasies about Bush being AWOL.

37 Toby Petzold  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 1:28:55pm

Her case represents a fuzziness in property rights. The state believes that her husband possesses a claim to her body, since she did not make any preparations for such an occurrence. It is horrifying in many ways.

Eeevil has an excerpt from Terri's mother, who states that Terri's husband used most of the money allocated to keeping her hospitalized, for legal fees.

I would rather die than be rendered incapable of thought.

Imagine if you will for a minute that Congressman Nutjob is right (I know it hurts a little but try). What that means is that either Dan Rather and the entire CBS news department are a bunch of morons who can't tell the difference between a piece of typewriter generated copy and MS Word or they are so ideologically driven they would do anything to destroy GWB despite their protestations of neutrality.

This is what it means to be a leftist today...even if your most outlandish fantasies are true, it makes your suporters idiots or liers.

We could start giving our operative code names, like “large Ears” or “big Mike” or something along those lines. “Deep throat” is already taken. The Democrats keep drifting further to left and moonbat comments like this do not help their cause. In Georgia, the conservative Democrats, (who are almost Republicans nowadays) are attempting to hold on to their base despite the DNC. My guess is that the southern Democrats will be the first to break from the DNC, and attempt to form a centralist party.

It is always a sad reflection of someone's charecter and intelligence whenever they fail to learn from past mistakes. One would expected a new understanding from individuals intent on maintaining their cushy careers in either the political or news media worlds.

Someone should explain to Hinchey that nothing should be said to any group that you aren't comfortable in broadcasting to the entire nation.

Those days of sowing your real intentions and beliefs among your supporters in a quiet, unnoticed fashion are gone. What you whisper in the back rooms in the morning is shouted from the rooftops by the afternoon.

If the onlinen community understands this new reality why hasn't Hinchey caught on to the information revolution?

131 Toby Petzold  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 1:59:23pm

You can be sure that many of the far Left really have slipped their moorings because of their insistence that Karl Rove is capable of anything. They are driven insane in the presence of the Idol. He is capable of anything. He is omniscient, omnipotent.

Yes, the ancestral form of the Lord of Misrule and the Feast of Fools both come from the Roman holiday of Saturnalia, which is the pagan holiday Christmas was meant to replace.

Downside to it is that some theorize that the Lord of Misrule was commonly sacrificed at the end of the month.

The most interesting theory that I've heard so far, which is nothing more than a theory, I can't think--it can't be proved--is that he was warned ahead of time by the Saudis. Now who knows what the real situation is...

I see a pattern.

168 EE  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 2:10:35pm

Congressman Maurice Hinchey is caught making allegations of what I think may be criminal behavior, but he admits that he doesn't have any evidence. His intention, it seems to me, is to harm the reputation of Karl Rove. Is this covered by the libel laws?

Recently we had Eason Jordan, news chief of CNN, sliming the military without indicating a shred of evidence to back his claim. Now we have a US congressman, Maurice Hinchey sliming Karl Rove without indicating a shred of evidence to back his claim.

But Hinchey didn't really complete his phony story. What made Dan Rather act in a rather strange way about this, denying to the end that the documents were forgeries, and claiming that a right-wing conspiracy was casting doubt on his precious documents? As long as Hinchey is fabricating stuff out of thin air, he might as well tell his listeners about the microchip that was put in Dan Rather's tooth the last time Rather went to the dentist, on orders from Karl Rove, in order that Karl Rove could send him subliminal messages concerning what Rather should do. Otherwise, how can we explain the stupidity and stubbornness of Dan Rather in defending the indefensible? And what about the microchip that was put into Mary Mapes' tooth, to make her act in a strange way, by calling the Democrat's campaign to tell them about the precious documents that they had to hit Bush with? Otherwise, how can we explain the bizarre behavior of Mary Mapes? And what about the CBS executives, and the chips that they had had implanted in their teeth? Otherwise, how can we explain how they went ahead with this fiasco putting all their faith in these precious documents? Hinchey has forgotten to tell all about the chips to explain why the supporters of the Democrat candidate and the Democrat campaign behaved in such a rather odd way. As long as you have no evidence at all to back up any of your libels, might as well tell it all, Maurice Hinchey.

Hinchey's libels are a part of the Rathergate story of fabricating things for political advantage.

The thought that remains stuck in my craw is given comments like those from Hinchey, McKinney, Murray, McDermott (sp. ?), Sheila Jackson Lee, Boxer, Kerry, et. al., the Dems were just an Ohio turnaround from the White House. That they still pulled 57 million votes while running as vacuous a candidate as Kerry shows that, as in sports, no lead is safe.

I don't see the Republican party spliting. That means that those 35-40% who will always vote Democratic will cause the Republicans to lose many elections.

Better to have a Republican you can tolerate then split in two and allow a Dem you can't stand to win.

If the Democratic party splits, the old style Dems can syphine off votes from both parties and perhaps succeed.

YWe talk about domination, but Kerry almost won. The popular vote spread was decent, but really, Ohio could have easliy gone the other way. If the Youngstown mayor (Dem) and the Republican organization in Ohio would have sat back, Kerry would be in the White House right now.

Remember, the AARP is becoming as branch of the Democratic party. They are pulling out all stops to get Dems in office. Senior-Americans vote in huge numbers.

Fortunetly, many of their members (like my parents) only joined to get hotel discounts.

Her family claims that she recognizes them, and I believe them just from watching the clips on TV. What they are going to do to this woman is starve her to death. It's a felony to do that to a dog, but the Supreme Court (liberal) of FL has NO problem with this. They even went so far as to overrule a law that Gov Bush and the Fla. House/SEnate passed to prevent just thisl. A little background info. Her husband sued and got a hefty judgement by claiming that he was going to take care of his wife for the rest of her life. As soon as he got the judgement, he started to claim that his wife wouldn't want to life like this and started to find a way to end her life. Her family claims that he has blocked all therapy for her. Take this info and come to your own conclusion. I'm just sick about this.

Stop the presses!

Here is an exact, full transcipt of Hinchey's speech, based on the recording Charles links to above. I'll paste it here in full, for the record:

Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY): Well, you know, they are manipulating the media, they did it in the very beginning through intimidation. They would intimidate the people in the, uh, in the press conference. And ... they would ask -- they would allow questions to be asked only of people that they knew were going to ask the right kind of questions, from their point of view. And, you know, that has its effect, had, had its effect on people. People have been -- people in the media have been intimidated. The media has changed in the last four years. People have changed in the last four years. They've had a very very direct, aggressive attack on the, on the media, and the way it's handled. And they -- and they distributed those out to elements of the media. And it was only -- what, like was it CBS? Or whatever, whatever which one Rather works for. They -- the people there -- they finally bought into it, and they, and they aired it. And when they did, they had 'em. They didn't care who did it! All they had to do is to get some element of the media to advance that issue. Based upon the false papers that they produced.

Audience Member: Do you have any evidence for that?

Congressman Hinchey: Yes I do. Once they did that --

Audience: [Murmuring]

Congressman Hinchey: ...once they did that, then it undermined everything else about Bush's draft dodging. Once they were able to say, 'This is false! These papers are not accurate, they're, they're, they're false, they've been falsified.' That had the effect of taking the whole issue away.

Audience Member: So you have evidence that the papers came from the Bush administration?

Congressman Hinchey: No. I -- that's my belief.

Audience Member: OK.

Congressman Hinchey: And I said that. In the very beginning. I said, 'It's my belief that those papers, and that setup, originated with Karl Rove and the White House.'

Audience Member: Don't you think it's irresponsible to make charges like that?

Congressman Hinchey: No I don't. I think it's very important to make charges like that. I think it's very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can. And I'm willing -- and most people are not -- to step forward in situations like this and take risks.

Audience: [Clapping and cheering.]

Congressman Hinchey: I consider that to be part of my job, and I'm gonna continue to do it.

235 2X4 wielder  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 2:35:45pm

Congressman Maurice Hinchey In Ithaca, a Voice Of Dissent ...

Most of the 14 people who stepped up to the microphones during the question-and-answer segment of this forum praised Mr. Hinchey for his antiwar stance. Some urged him to pursue impeachment, winning even more applause.

But one man, distinctive in his crisp blue blazer, asked whether Mr. Hinchey would renounce "shrill, irresponsible" language by retracting his "massacre" statement. The request prompted hisses from the audience and an explanation of conditional language by Mr. Hinchey. ...

But Mr. Hinchey said Friday night that he would not retract his use of the word "massacre" because he had meant it in the conditional. If the United States had used the "shock and awe" bombardment of Baghdad, he said, then many civilians might have died — leading others to view it as a massacre. "I don't want my country seen by others that way," he said, winning more applause.

236 quark2  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 2:36:02pm

I just listened to the clip. It's not funny that the audience in majority went along with his unsubstantiated accusations. It's scary that we're seeing something like this surface into the public, where those in responsible positions are making such outrageous and false statements they cannot back up.
This man needs to questioned by his own peerage first off, and then he needs to apologize publically to Rove for his lies, if he cannot verify what he's said in a public forum.
We are beginning to see a pattern very close to what the islamfacists are guilty of , declaring someone guilty with no proof and then punishing the accused who has no recourse. If this representative cannot prove what he's stated, he needs to be publically called onto the carpet and then pay a porportionate price.
If the accused was not still protected by law we could see the beginnings of a lynch mob taking care of business whether the accused is guilty or not.
I congratulate the minion who had the courage to speak up and record this mans outrageous speech.

I know I may be reading into this, but obviously, parties unknown, probably Dems, did this, and bloggers caught them. People - they - direct - aggressive. I just think it drips from his words. My opinion, for what it is worth.

A stretch, perhaps. They set up Dan Rather but I don't see that it was necessarily with the intention that bloggers would take it from there. My reading is that Rove et al would then make the obvious case that the memos were fakes (wasn't Rather the first one the bloggers took down?)...

Reasonable, but as in my #275, I believe that Hinchley was suggesting that Rove set it up so that Rove (not the bloggers) could later make the case that the memos were fake...

I'll be back shortly -- this is too much fun...

282 jwpaine  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:03:38pm

...But of Rove were the evil genius the moonbats think he is, wouldn't he have had the brains NOT to use a computer font unheard-of in the early 70s?

Only a talking head with an agenda would have been that dumb... and he's "retiring."

I agree, or, more precisely, and in line with the "thinking" patterns which he has already exhibited, his actual theory is that Rove not only planted the documents but also went on to allert bloggers so they would do his job for him.

288 Catttt  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:07:42pm

I think his basic a priori premise (Evil Rove is responsible whenever something bad happens to the Democrats) is colored by his emotionalism, but you're right, I may be projecting re bloggers. I do think he hates us, though.

I notice the DU'ers love this guy. Figures.

290 peggie  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:08:56pm

if cbs listened to the objections, they could've outted the forms themselves. no matter where the forms came from - you still had people yelling false but accurate. if rove wanted to get kerry, the vet groups were crowing about having confiscated letters that had been kept in archieves after being found in vietnam and translated. the crowing was about some co=ordination between kerry and his group with the north vietnamese. you would think that would be a smoking gun, but we haven't heard anymore since. bottom line put up or shut up

Yes, but that way Rove would have run the risk of fabricating documents that couldn't necessarily be exposed as fakes.
(or so a moonbat would tell you...)

293 jake  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:09:09pm

My attempt at iowahawk humor, though in this case it's a bit like shooting fish in a barrel.

Congressman Moonbat (D-NY): Well, you know, they are manipulating the media, they started in the very beginning by putting flouride in the drinking water. Then there were the subliminal messages that they would put in the, uh, commercials and on the billboards and underneath the FM radio carrier signals to get people to buy more things and to not question the government. And those who did question the government were, well, they were silenced. Some of them, well, they would get federal agents to plant drugs on them and arrest them and send them to jail so they couldn't speak out. That happened to several very good friends of mine. And then others, well, you know the rock band Phish? Now, it's my belief, that this started in the White House, with Karl Rove, well actually many years before Bush was first "elected", so you can see how far back the conspiracy goes, well they somehow compromised them so that they would put subliminal messages into their songs so that their fans would follow them around the country and not, you know, start the glorious revolution to overthrow the military-industrial neocon junta that I am working day and night myself to subvert, before they enslave us all.

Audience Member: Do you have any evidence for this?

Congressman Moonbat: Yes I do. Once they did that --

Audience: [Murmuring]

Congressman Moonbat: ...once they did that, then it undermined everything else about the so-called weapons of mass destruction that they of course, well, Bush's father, sold to Saddam so that he would, you know, invade Kuwait on behalf of, you know, so that Halliburton could do business there.

Audience Member: So you have evidence that any of this is happening?

Congressman Moonbat: No. I -- that's my belief.

Audience Member: OK.

Congressman Moonbat: And I said that. In the very beginning. I said, 'It's my belief that the, for example the mind-control chemicals in they put in my toothpaste, and that setup, originated with Karl Rove and the White House.'

Audience Member: Don't you think it's irresponsible to make charges like that?

Congressman Moonbat: No I don't. I think it's very important to make charges like that. I think it's very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can. And I'm willing -- and most people are not -- to step forward in situations like this and take risks, even though the so-called "sane" people of this country might disagree, to stop brushing my teeth and stop listening to the secret messages emanating from my dental fillings, until this whole crisis is over and we can get another man of honor, like Bill Clinton was, back in the White House.

Audience: [Clapping and cheering.]

Congressman Moonbat: I consider that to be part of my job, and I'm gonna continue to do it.

294 Dave the.....  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:09:17pm

Liberals say the damndest things, This is their SOP, make wild accusations with no evidence, and simply say its your “belief”. The fact that most liberals do not have a reputation, and that liberal “beliefs” change from day to day depending on the weather does nothing to inspire confidence in the liberal in question. Of course if the MSM picks up on it, then the story would have one to believe that anything a liberal says is written in stone. Because we all know that liberals never lie and conservatives never tell the truth. That is the number one rule in journalism nowadays.

The LGF scoop on the Hinchey speech is already the hot topic over at Free Republic.

321 mollyb  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:22:46pm

Hey, MSM!

Hinchey: Well, you know, they are manipulating the, the media. They did it, from the very beginning, through intimidation. They would intimidate people in the, um, in, in the press conference.
And they would ask, they would allow questions to be asked only of people that they knew were going to ask the right kind of questions from their point of view. And, you know, that has its effect. That had, has had its effect on people. People have been, people in the media have been intimidated.
The media’s changed in the last four years. People have changed in the last four years.
They’ve had a very, very, direct, aggressive attack on, on the media and the way it’s handled.
Probably the most flagrant example of that is the way they set up Dan Rather.
Now, I mean, I have my own beliefs about how that happened. It originated with Karl Rove, in my belief, in the White House.
They set that up with those false papers.
Why did they do it?
They knew that Bush was a draft-dodger.
They knew that he had run away from his responsibilities in the Air National Guard in Texas; gone out of the state, intentionally, for a long period of time.
They knew that he had no defense for that period in his life.
And so what they did was--expecting that that was going to come up--they accentuated, they produced papers that made him look even worse, and they, and they distributed those out to elements of the media.
And it was only, what, like, was it CBS or, whatever, whatever which one Rather works for. They, people there, they finally bought into it.
And they, and they aired it.
And when they did, they had it.
They didn’t care who did it.
All they had to do was to get some element of the media to advance that issue, based upon the false papers that they produced.

LGF operative: Do you have any evidence for that?

Hinchey: Once they, once... Yes, I do. Once they did that, once they did that, then, it undermined everything else about Bush’s draft-dodging. Once they were able to say,
“This is false. These papers are, are not accurate, they’re, they’re, they’re false, they, they’ve been falsified,” that had the effect of taking the whole issue out of it.

LGF operative: So, you have evidence that the papers came from the Bush administration?

Hinchey: No; I ... that’s my belief.

LGF operative: O.k.

Hinchey: And I said it. In the very beginning. I said it. It’s my belief that those papers. that that setup, originated with Karl Rove in the White House.

LGF: Don’t you think it’s irresponsible to make charges like that?

Hinchey: No, I don’t. I think it’s very important to do, to make charges like that.
I think it’s very important to combat this kind of activity in every way that you can, and I’m willing, as most people are not, to step forward in situations like this and take risks.
[applause]
I consider that to be part of my job, and I’m going to continue to do it.

Brett, great

If I may suggest using a formal format when sending news announcements to the Press. For example:

Press Release from Little Green Footballs
Date: 2/20/05
Owner: Charles Johnson
address:
[Link: www.littlegreenfootballs.com...]
Email:?
Phone Number:?

Actually I'd ask Charles if he wants to send out a press notice; and if so, what contact information he wishes to provide. Media groups tend to treat a news source more respectfully if they provide a press release with contact information. Memos, emails, and especially press releases create a paper trail for establishing the source of a news story

331 Dave the.....  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 3:27:48pm

While I agree that the congressman is a certifiable idiot, there really isn't much that can be done. I don't remember anything happening to Bob Dornan when he accused Clinton of being a CIA mole, for example.

As for getting him unelected in '06, good luck. Most congressmen are in safe districts, so the only way to do anything about a problem would be a primary challenge, but that's only likely in the case of someone who has pissed off the base, and this sort of BS is red meat for the moonbats. The Dem most likely to face a serious primary challenge next year is Joe Lieberman . . .

As for Karl Rove or anyone else suing this idiot for slander, it's not going to happen. I'm sure Rove has more important things to do, and there's also that truism about wrestling in the mud with a pig.

Of course it would be nice if the media addressed this and the "honorable" congressman were invited on TV to explain his "belief." If he's like most obscure congressmen, he would probably leap at the chance.

A post at Free Republic

I think it is terrific that Little Green Footballs has "field reporters" as it were. Folks who don't know the history of the "free press" for whom the First Amendment was written.

The Colonial and early American newspapers printed stories from beyond their own cities by borrowing (without payment) stories from outside newspapers that came in my mail, or by printing letters from outsiders as if they were correspondents. (That's what they were, literally, since the word originally meant people who exchanged letters with one another.

Bottom line: substitute e-mails for letters, and blog sites for newspapers, and what you see LGF doing here is EXACTLY how original newspapers like the Brunswick Gazette (one of my favorites) reported the news in 1787.

If the people at the Columbia J School had a clue about the history of their profession, they would note this parallel, and applaud this development. But they don't, and don't.

The left seems to be flying anything and everything up the wall right now just to see if anyone salutes. John Kerry did this a couple of weeks ago on Meet the Press when he alleged that the Bush administration is secretly asking the Iraqis to ask us to vacate Iraq. Tim Russert calls his bluff and asks him if he has any evidence, to which Kerry gives a flat no.

It's the same thing here. Congressman Hinchney, when pressed, simply says this is his belief (that Rove planted the fake memos.)

Are the Democrats ever going to realize that the election is over? Bush won! If this is their strategy for winning the next presidential election - or even the next round of Congressional elections in 2006 - they have a strange way of going about things.

Question on priorities

Do you want the recording to be reproduced and passed around the net to spread the news,
or

Do you want to ensure this news break is tied to LGF with iron clad links?

If people post to the audio link and not lgf in comments or on blogs, will the net and media people understand the news source is LGF? Call me a cynic, but I never assume that people will credit their sources. If the google problem wasn't an issue then perhaps these questions wouldn't be a concern.

It was really cool seeing LGF mentioned on the morning news this morning. It was sort of like seeing the secret handshake of a few close friends revealed on the jumbotron in Times Sguare.

A couple of years ago I was telling people, "You gotta see this site. The people who post there are wonderful. The opinions, ideas, and focus will draw your bow tight." And now, look at this site. Taking down world stage elitist fools and shaking loose the foundation of legacy media.

I felt like a part of the focus of that news segment this morning. The thrust of which seemed to be,

Big Media saying, "Oh my f'ing god these blog things are scaring the hell out of us."

Blog Community saying, "Thats right mother f'er, your party of lies and lunacy is over. You aint gotta go home, but your mic and podium have been revoked, bitch."

Apart from whether the MSM picks up on this, and apart from whether or not Hinchey is ever held responsible for his comments, we can still say "hooray!" about our LGF operative's brilliant, on-target, BS-dissection method of inquiry:

LGF operative: Do you have any evidence for that?

Hinchey: Once they, once... Yes, I do. Once they did that, once they did that, then, it undermined everything else about Bush’s draft-dodging. Once they were able to say, “This is false.

We are "it."

Zombie and Charles,

i'm checking the sites and finding many that explain the situation with a link here, but what I'm not seeing in several blogs is a direct cite that LGF is the news source.

Leaving off the name passes the information onward but does inhibits a reader's clear understanding that LGF broke the story. It's a subtle game of announcing the news but not stating they are borrowing the news story.

We could post a reminder and/or request in their comments section to include a LGF mention

Google won't list LGF, but this is the SECOND result when you type in "little green footballs": some creep with a site called Late German Fascist. He/it has this to say about LGF.

about this quiz

I was inspired to build this quiz when I noticed that comments on Littlegreenfootballs.com (a popular warblog) tended to be indistinguishable in tone and content from the writings of Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and the other architects of the "final solution."

Always indistinguishable? Well, maybe not - but close enough and often enough to be pretty disturbing. Yes, the quotes I've used here are all "cherry-picked" - from LGF and the Nazis both - but since the webmaster patrols LGF pretty thoroughly it's fair to say that his site is as defined by what he allows (e.g., calls to "sterilize" the "subhuman" Palestinians) as it is by what he doesn't (e.g., criticisms of Israel or George W).

I understand, but once the cat was out of the bag, lots of people were mad at him. I do agree that we should judge men (and women) by the content of their character. Unfortunately, for me, thinking rape is funny shows lack of same. Rape is many things, but funny isn't one of them.

I know men of his age don't always understand that rape is not a joking matter - I recall similar "jokes" overheard when I was a little girl (little pitchers have big ears). Today, if a man in my presence made such a joke to me, I'd hit him, no doubt in my mind, if he was close enough to me. If they do it in a men's club, it's none of my business.

Gotta luv that free speech...

This is the beauty of the internet and blog revolution - let anyone say whatever they want, but be prepared to get called on it.

Gone are the days when you can speak to a constituency out of one side of your mouth and then publicly deny it out of the other. Now your beliefs must match your statements or the blog will get you.

Once more into the breech...

PS Charles, what's the deal on t-shirts? I was hoping a green santa lizard would bring one down the chimney!

>I can't imagine how exciting Rathergate must have been

It wasn't that exciting. Anyone who knew anything at all about typewriters and word processing and who was an adult in the seventies knew right off the bat that the documents were forged. I was doing state-of-the-art word processing in Texas in the seventies, and I took one look at the alleged memos, laughed, and said to my wife, "Those are forgeries." Any time someone fakes something that clumsily, they will get caught out, and they did. It was just a matter of time.

My disappointment is that no one has done a criminal investigation or filed charges on the people involved, as some serious forgery- and conspiracy- related crimes certainly appear to have been committed.

[Rathergate wasn't that exciting.

Not that exciting? It was exhilarating, considering the stakes. Sure the Guard story wasn't much, and the documents were obvious fakes, but the idea that CBS would actually run with them in order to (they thought) throw a presidential election in wartime... staggering.

It just may not seem like much now, since we know who won.

458 Ariana  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 5:02:55pm

I may have a different experience than others here, but in a very generalize sense I found males more polite while I grew up in contrast to what I've heard in recent years. I suppose it's because formally taboo sexual topics are now considered acceptable in public. At any rate our society has produced an atmosphere where people don't exercise caution or restraint, and spout off anything that occurs to them at the moment.

459 centaur  Sun, Feb 20, 2005 5:03:30pm

Great scoop, Charles.

The will squirm and squeel and call us a lynch mob. But more and more will see this as it is: calling those in authority for accountability, and asking for facts. Period. And the more they squirm and the louder they squeel -- with every manner of insult in the book-- the sooner the rest between us will realize the truth.

Have you ever noticed that there's a little green football printed on the backside of every Lincoln $5 dollar bill? It's just sort of sitting there, smack-dab in the center, with "In God We Trust" inscribed along the top. Granted, it's a little rounded at the ends, but it's definitely there. You can't miss it.
What other blog can brag being immortalized by the U.S. Treasury?
I confess, I'm beginning to get morbid satisfaction in knowing that every member of Google News, dailyKos and the NY Times--- is forever condemned to to carry little green footballs around with them practically everywhere they go.
Whereever they go--- there we are. Thanks to Charles!

It may have something to do with where I live, but people tend to be very polite here - male and female alike. Everyone holds the door, every one blesses you when you sneeze, etc.

I think men used to be more dismissive of women (e.g., bra burning jokes, why a woman can't be president, etc.) and made assumptions that they expected you to submit to a lot more than they do now. Men I know are much more inclusive, and sometimes, that includes something about sex, such as a joke, but never in a demeaning or dismissive way.

I think men still try to be circumspect in mixed company (which is sooo cute of them and appreciated), but a group of people you know well is just different - I think people are less uptight (I hate that word) than they used to be, and sometimes people just misjudge their audience. I was once chided by someone for using the phrase "pissed off."

At risk to my well-being I won't ask your age! But the most destructive element to have emerged from the sixties was that all gloves came off-nothing more was sacred, which as you pointed out includes loss of restraint, manners and respect all in the name of free speech or 'tell it like it is' or 'do your own thing'. I don't know where you grew up, and maybe this crassness took awhile to reach your locale, but I've seen this coarsening for many years. One can only do one's best and teach the next generation manners and respect and hope the current tone is not irreversible.

Most of the posts here discussed 'beliefs' and the bankruptcy of the Dem party. I like the ones that focus down on the simple foundation of this, the LIES. The moral bankruptcy of the misnamed democratic party seems to rest upon lies... and mostly they have lied to themselves... We all loose from this. A legitimate Democratic party, and legitimate debate would be a great win for the nation. As it is, and until it changes, we have a choice from a party who lives in the real world, and one so lost in their own lies that they can no longer tell truth from falsehood, so lost that they knowlingly choose lies. Scarier still, the lost party, the party of lies, commands the votes of better than 40% of the nation, and in a very unthinking way. Very Scary.

It's not funny that the audience in majority went along with his unsubstantiated accusations. It's scary that we're seeing something like this surface into the public, where those in responsible positions are making such outrageous and false statements they cannot back up.

quark2: the word is "demogaguery," I believe.

You know, the sort of stuff that Huey Long and George Wallace in his Stand In the Schoolhouse Door period used to say. Back then, it was assumed that the sort of people who cheered on such politicians were fearful, uneducated, ignorant bigots - the white sheet brigade.

Today's demagogues are still Democrats (just as they were in the '30's and '60's), but they're not in the back woods with a bullhorn screaming "N***er" at Billy Bob any more. They're welcome guests at prestigious university towns in the Northeast.

This crowd has more (formal) education than the old crew did, but the level of fear and ignorance, the willingness to place emotions before facts - well, I'd say that hasn't changed.

Fadlallah accuses Israel of Hariri's murder
Cleric says assasination was part of U.S. 'strategy of political violence'

BEIRUT: Shiite cleric Sayyed Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah directly accused the Israeli intelligence of perpetrating the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri on Friday, as the Prayer for the Absent, which is usually reserved for high-ranking personalities such as kings, was held on Friday in Mecca and all the Lebanese mosques to pray for the soul of Hariri and the victims of the blast.

"Israel has exerted violence on the region since its establishment, and allied with the American intelligence in order to implement corruption through political assassinations and attacks on the people of many countries," Fadlallah said.

Well, Tony nor Dale won the Daytona 500. BTW, although Jeff Gordon is the first person of probable alternative sexual orientation to win the Daytona 500, the flamboyant Tim Richmond won several Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup ) races driving for the same owner, Rick Hendricks, in the 1980s.

I've not seen any story that ever called Richmond gay, but "flamboyant" seems to have been a favorite adjective. In fact, "flamboyant" and Tim Richmond gets 960 hits

About this time, enter Rick Hendrick, who saw a world of potential in the flamboyant young driver with that proverbial fire in his belly to win races. Rick created a brand new team; ostensibly belonging to his father, "Papa Joe" (It was some silly rule about multi-car teams, which has obviously gone by the wayside.)

He built the #25 team around Tim, and especially for him, with Folgers Coffee as the sponsor, and the irascible Harry Hyde as crew chief. If you've ever watched "Days of Thunder", the Harry Hogg character was patterned after Hyde. There was a lot of Timmy in the Cole Trickle character, but one could also see a lot of Dale Earnhardt, and when it came to racing the two were not so very different.
Link

Richmond missed parts of the 1986 and 1987 season with what was described as pneumonia, but came back to win his first race back, the Pocono 500, before winning the next race, at Richmond. Richmond tried the Michigan race, but was sick again and missed the rest of the season.

By the time of the 1988 Busch Clash, now the Bud Shootout, Richmond was somewhat better, but NASCAR, apparently suspecting Richmond had AIDS, instituted a drug test. Richmond stopped taking AZT 6 weeks before the race, but NASCAR announced he failed the test. It was later revealed Richmond had tested positive for Motrin and Sudafed, but he missed the race.

Eventually, they had to lift his suspension, but still refused to let him drive without surrendering his medical records from the Cleveland Clinic, which would have proved he had AIDS. So feared was this disease then, he refused, preferring to take the secret to his grave rather than own up to it. One thing he did do, being Tim Richmond, was hire a small plane to fly over Daytona on race day, trailing a banner that read "Fans, I Miss You-Tim Richmond"

Later that year, Tim filed suit against NASCAR for defamation of character relating to the drug test and the false information released. NASCAR countered by demanding reams of information: Richmond's tax returns from 1980-87; the results of every test of his urine, blood or other bodily fluids since 1980; records of every visit to a doctor, psychologist or counselor since 1980; and his medical records from the Cleveland Clinic and his personal doctor in Florida. These boys know how to fight! By fall, the lawsuit was withdrawn, once more to avoid disclosing his medical records. Rick Hendrick probably summed up all that happened in the best way. "That's horrible to damage someone like that - to character assassinate without the facts."

Tim retired to seclusion in West Palm Beach, Florida, where he remained, with his mother, until his death on August 13, 1989. In all those months, there were very few visitors from the "family" of NASCAR. Rick Hendrick remained close to Tim, as did Barry Dodson, but the vast majority of drivers were conspicuous in their absence, probably due to a combination of fear of the disease and fear of retribution from NASCAR. Kyle Petty offered this statement as a summation:
"It all boils down to AIDS. I don’t care what anybody tells you. Nobody knows how to handle AIDS, especially in a sport as backward-thinking on so many things as this sport is."

In other words, it's very important to tell the truth -- the real truth we all know is true, even if we have to lie about the facts, or make them up completely.

It's the truth that matters! Down with the American corporate imperialist pig dogs!

Maurice Hinchey is the New Queen Of The Space Unicorns.

I don't have any evidence of that, but as Howard Dean would say, it's an interesting theory.

(I was going to say how the mighty have fallen, and we're reduced to chasing after Stupid Things A Congressman Said, rather than inflicting career-ending injuries on Legacy Media Honchos. Almost, but not quite as pathetic as outing former-male-escorts-turned-journalists -for-tiny-newspapers- nobody-ever-heard-of. Just sayin'.)

He's preaching to the choir up there. I used to live 10 minutes south of Ithaca (still own the house) and that entire area is a barking moonbat socialist NIGHTMARE. Our property taxes go up 10, 15, 25% EVERY year, year after year, because of *state mandated* welfare programs - and we're lucky, our county spends 50% of its budget on Medicaid, while one nearby county found its share of Medicaid MORE than all it collected in property taxes! The government is almost 100% Democrat, but no one blames them for the problems. Ohhh no, its all the fault of the REPUBLICANS in WASHINGTON. "Too many fat cats."

Ariana,

Those boys are in need of a lesson in MANNERS.

It's typical of teenaged boys to show off; however, where *I* come from, to do such a thing in front of a parent would be unheard of.

IMO, humiliation is in order. I would encourage you to fully engage in teaching them a lesson.. in whatever embarassing, humiliating, lifetime-scarring way you see fit!

Baby Photos. That always works wonders. If they start treating women like objects, threaten them with those, and they will show immediate respect.

More conspiracies from the Kos Kids - I can hardly contain myself from busting my gut laughing.

I agree, this is a smokescreen and an attempt to distance the party publicly from the fundies.
Ask yourself, when has this GOP ever drifted off message? Everything that comes out on purpose (from Wead or anyone else) is absolutely part of the Grand Old Plan of the GOP. My theories (reflecting other's):
Smokescreen for Gannongate

Distance from Fundies to prepare GOP candidates for 2006

First attempt at humanizing W so he goes down as a more natural "troubled leader" rather than the crack-pot fundie puppet we all know him to be.

All of the above

W is not a troubled leader. He's a simple-minded frat boy controlled by the neocons. I'm certain that whenever he comes up with his own ideas (if ever) he's gently smacked down by Karl Rove, Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. If his idea happens to be harmless, such as, "Maybe Laura thinks those gang kids need some help...?" then they praise him and make it happen. "Oh, you're so visionary Mr. President!"
This latest distraction is more reason to pursue Gannongate, in my opinion. Follow the money.

America's democracy of double standards won't work

Why you ask?

Because:

But is Israel really a democracy? It is for its Jewish citizens, who enjoy constitutional freedoms Arab regimes suppress. But for the Palestinians it is not - a fact most aptly, and topically, personified by this self-same Sharansky, a hero of freedom in the White House, but an expansionist zealot at home

What constitutional freedoms do Israelis enjoy in any Arab country? In Palestinian areas? This article seems to have left some things out.

That must be how the LGF operative felt in a room full of rabid LLL moonbats.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said he believes the US government is planning to assassinate him.

"If they kill me, the name of the person responsible is [President] George Bush," Mr Chavez said.

Yes. He intends to have you beheaded and a koran and some long beard hairs left behind with maybe a road map of Syria or Iran. Then he will use avenging your death as an excuse to make more martyrs (sorry 'bout that, dead virgins).

3.94 inches. 10 cm.

That is what the MOS from the new 0Z NAM model is predicting for LAX in the 24 hours ending 10 pm Monday night local time.

Wow.

North Pacific IR4 colorized satellite loop shows manly storm approaching Los Angeles!

Here comes the rain again!

The period from the previous Thursday through early Tuesday will have some SoCal mountains above 1.8 km receiving 2 to 4 meters of snow. Not feet. Meters.

Further east, using ISP (Islip) as a proxy for Amityville, which doesn't have a 3 letter identifier to the best of my knowledge, receives about 4 inches (10 cm) of snow, mostly before 6 am, before a change to rain. About two tenths liquid rain falls, melting some, but not all, of the snow. Since the 10cm is on the ground by 6 am, I say St. Martin of Tours has about a 50% chance of a snow day.

About 18 cm of snow, with no rain (maybe a touch of sleet) for Boston, with the heaviest snow starting just after AM commute per NAM MOS. However, looking at Taunton-Boston WSR-88D NexRad Doppler Radar, the snow may start just a shade earlier than that. Light snow has already started in the NYC area, and even Islip is reporting light snow and -3o C.

The rain snow line is currently between Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Why is anybody surprised? Doesn't everybody know that Karl Rove Nostradamus, Svengali, Rasputin and Bugs Bunny all rolled into one? Hell, the only reason Rather even put the story on the air is because Karl told him it would be an excellent way to serve his country. And Wead didn't release those tapes until Rove had them edited, and what a bitch of a time he had getting the retakes done on W's hectic schedule of drooling mountain biking. And then W had to screw it up over and over by speaking too clearly and not putting in enough "Bushisms" to make it beleiveable. Wait a minute, phone call... hey it's Karl...what's solitaire got to do with anything...oh, okay... uh, nevermind, everybody, I was just making this up.

The Colonial and early American newspapers printed stories from beyond their own cities by borrowing (without payment) stories from outside newspapers that came in by mail, or by printing letters from outsiders as if they were correspondents.

These days "borrowing" from other newspapers is called plagiarism, or copyright infringement. Original letters from local people are fair game, if they choose to offer them without compensation or copyright.

Sure the Guard story wasn't much, and the documents were obvious fakes, but the idea that CBS would actually run with them in order to (they thought) throw a presidential election in wartime... staggering.

This is what really frosts me. To think that this cheap forgery was being used to influence an election at a time when our country is under attack by jihadists who would nuke us or anthrax us if they could.

CBS should be investigated for traitorous activity. Maybe this sounds a bit over the top, but think about it: We know that the Saudis have unlimited funds to buy off anyone they please, including our attack submariner Mr. Carter, whose charitable organization is funded by the Saudis.

Maybe CBS is on the "other side" too. Why not? Let them be a bit more patriotic and less on the side of the jihadists. The public airwaves belong to the public. They can't be used to throw elections in wartime without someone checking to see who's behind the fradulent activities.

Just looking at new SPC SWODY1. No Categorical Risk areas, but California, south of a line from from about Pt Concepcion south about 50 miles inland to I-10, then to near Tonopah, AZ (not Tonopah, NV) and then down to the Mexican border, and a separate area inside a line from extreme SW Tennesee, to extreme western Alabama, then down to near Hattiesburg, MS, then Baton Rouge, then through Houston to near Palacios, then northwest to near San Antonio, then back to SW Tennesee, has greater than 2% but less than 5% probability of seeing a tornado within 25 miles of any point within the area.

I just read a rabbi's commentary on cases like this in Biblical Law. IIRC, if a terminally ill person is in pain and will probably die soon (within one year), measures should not be taken to extend his life when another life threatening event occurs. However, his death cannot be speeded up, i.e. "mercy killing." He cannot even be touched, except to make him comfortable. However, everything possible medically to reduce/eliminate the pain is permitted, even to giving a pain killing, but addictive drug or permanently blocking nerve receptors.

In the case of brain damage, like retardation or diseases like Alzheimers, the person's body is functioning normally, they may even be pain free and comfortable, but their quality of life may not be the choice of most people. Nevertheless, everything must be done to save this person's life. Not to do so is murder. Quality of life is a value judgement. Who knows what this person is thinking or contributing to the world. In Terri's case, her body functions are working; she is comfortable; her parents say she occasionally responds; her existance is needed by those who love her; she just can't feed herself. To starve her to death would be murder according to Torah law.

601 Miggie  Mon, Feb 21, 2005 12:52:49am

Well, it is getting out anyway so we might as well own up to how it really went down. Actually, Maurice Hinchey is a Rove plant! Rove set him up to make a ridiculous accusation without proof about Rove trying to make the Democrats look bad! See, if he could claim Rove planted the forgeries (supplied by Rove) to get them to CBS then Dan Rather would pick them up and run with them to make it look like Bush dodged the draft just before the election. Then when they were shown to be forgeries, as Rove knew they would be, (as well as ignored at first in the MSM) CBS would look bad at first but then CBS would eventually whitewash Rather so he could still go on for a while as head of their news department and Mary Mapes would take the blame and the other guys could still work at CBS.

There's a few details on how the whole thing came together and how the timing worked but Rove had it all figured out beforehand.

I don't know all the details but once you realize that Rove set up Hinchey then the whole thing makes sense... it's just another layer of the plot.

603 manofaiki  Mon, Feb 21, 2005 3:42:42am

This guy doesn't have a clue and has to be reminded which network Dan Rather works for?

They knew that he had no defense for that period in his life. And so what they did was, expecting that that was going to come up, they accentuated it: they produced papers that made it look even worse. And they — and they distributed those out to elements of the media. And it was only — what, like was it CBS? Or whatever, whatever which one Rather works for.

This guy is so out of touch, in his attempt to explain this whole Memogate thing to the audience, he has to ask gee, which network is it again that rather works for?

How can anybody pretend to stay informed on current events for the past year and not know that Dan Rather works for CBS?

Anybody ready for Eason Jordan II?

Although I don't think a Congressman can be fired for stupidity (Congress wouldn't be able to function of over 1/3 of it's members got canned) maybe this guy can be recalled.

Once Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, and Fox News spend a week on this story, I predict this guy will apologize and claim he was prescription drugs or something when he gave this speech.

You know the good news here is that since this is a congressman maybe he won't be called for jury duty. Wouldn't you just love to have someone like that sitting in judgement?

For what it's worth, I also linked this post, and the trackback didn't ping. This will probably get the news to half a dozen people in Wisconsin who wouldn't have seen it otherwise and someone in Belgium googling my name grain.

Dear Congressman Hinchey,

Why would Karl Rove waste his time trying to make Democrats say stupid things in public when people like you do it with no prompting at all?

My dictionary defines 'McCarthyism' as: "...the use of tactics involving personal attacks on individuals by means of widely publicized indiscriminate allegations, especially on the basis of unsubstantiated charges." Your picture doesn't accompany the entry, but there's always next year's edition.

Thank you for your time,
E.W.
Richmond, California

p.s. Can you please convince Dan Rather to claim Mr. Rove faked the documents? It would actually be a more rational position for Mr. Rather, since he still insists they're authentic, but it would certainly be an improvement in his broadcast's entertainment value.

Thanks again.
