More Arrested Bloggers

Thu, Mar 3, 2005 at 6:31:21 pm PST

The Committee to Protect Bloggers points out that in the last week, totalitarian regimes have been arresting and threatening numerous bloggers:

Malaysian blogger Jeff Ooi questioned by police.

Bahraini blogger Ali Abdulemam arrested with two of his fellow moderators on the BahrainOnline bulletin board.

Iranian blogger Nasjeh Omidparvar arrested.

Omidparvar, who is pregnant, is the wife of recently convicted blogger Mohamad Reza Nasab Abholahi.

This is the down side of the recent media focus on blogging; the repressive theocrats and dictators of the world also read our media. They perceive a threat to their control of information, and they’re reacting the way these atavistic monsters always do—by attempting to crush the threat at its source.

But this time, they’re going to fail.

You cannot silence the truth forever. The dams will not hold. Truth will break out eventually, and when it does, it will be in a flood which shall sweep tyrants and their supporters before it.

Heaven forbid they reform themselves by dealing with fraud, and straightening out their gerrymandered districts.

I'm reminded of a line in "Star Wars" when Princess Leiah says to the General of the Emporer's forces "The more you tighten your grip, the more star systems will slip through your fingers."

May the force be with bloggers for freedom, where ever they live.

New standards for UN troops?

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA; AND NEW YORK – Faced with a double-barreled crisis over its inability to forge even a semblance of peace in the African jungles of Congo or prevent its soldiers from sexually abusing civilians there, the United Nations' biggest global peacekeeping operation is undergoing a dramatic makeover. The changes may set important precedents, experts say, for UN peacekeeping efforts worldwide.

If the world's theocrats want to elevate their nations above the abject poverty level (where nearly all Islamic countries reside, even the ones with oil), they will have to allow their people to become educated, but as the people become more educated they will turn away from the force-fed "religion" and revolt against these despots and their "holy leader" toadies.

So the Islamic tyrants around the world will find it necessary to do whatever it takes to keep their people ignorant and uninformed as long as they can or they'll lose their grip on power. The internet is more dangerous to them than cruise missiles.

My point is -- they can lock up a few bloggers, but as long as there is any electronic interconnectivity (and that is fast becoming part and parcel of the world) the truth -- via the voice of the people -- is not going to be silenced any longer ...

29 rightasrain  Thu, Mar 3, 2005 5:05:37pm

Well, I have to do some research to find this story, but several years ago I remember reading about an experiment in India where they put a computer at the edge of an area that had vast poverty and illiteracy.

They secured the computer, keyboard, mouse, etc., in some way that allowed kids to use it without stealing it.

A bunch of illiterate kids figured out how to use the computer to surf the internet fairly quickly.

Within a matter of months, they were downloading music MP3s.

These kids (mired in poverty with no chance whatsoever at a decent life) had a door open in their lives by a computer that they figured out how to use to communicate with the WORLD.

I think that even the experimenters were surprised by this.

Societies that try to control information in the 21st Century are trying to hold back the tide. They won't be able to do it.

Look, it's not a problem to create a VPN if you know the IP address. If these folks need an outlet (that's not known as an outlet) it's a simple matter. If the mullahs want to ban US IP's, that's not a problem. If they want to ban all but Iranian IP's that's not a problem.

There are many of us willing and able to create proxies where needed. We just need to know where and when.

That may sound silly to some - but that's the sort of thing I mean. During the American Revolution, the colonists needed all manner of support and supplies. It wasn't just lead for their long rifles, salt pork and hardtack. They were a ragtag bunch of merchants and farmers, not warriors. They needed anything and everything - money, metal, food, rations, horses, boots, flints, dry powder, etc.

In the 21st century, maybe some massive coalition of proxy servers is one of those needful things!

I don't want to spend my life being a half-wit, half-clever smart-ass on somebody's blog.

The Iranian mullahs put their boots on the necks of their people in 1978 and sent the USA wimpering down the lane. It's time to go back and help those people help themselves. This is truly one of those "moments in time".

'Israel's expansion includes ethnic cleansing,' he said. 'Palestinians who had lived in that land for centuries were driven out by systematic violence and terror aimed at ethnically cleansing what became a large part of the Israeli state.' He added: 'Today the Israeli government continues seizures of Palestinian land for settlements, military incursions into surrounding countries and denial of the right of Palestinians expelled by terror to return. Ariel Sharon, Israel's Prime Minister, is a war criminal who should be in prison not in office.'

Sad. I got this from the Jewish Rep. Coalition in an email today:

Death of Max M. Fisher
RJC Founding Chairman
March 03, 2005

With deep sadness, the Republican Jewish Coalition notes the passing of its founding chairman and visionary leader, Max M. Fisher. Max Fisher, known as "the dean of Jewish Republicans," was 96.
Mr. Fisher was an advisor and friend to every Republican president since Eisenhower. As the Quiet Diplomat (the title of the 1992 biography of Mr. Fisher by Peter Golden), he played a unique role in U.S.-Israel relations for many years.

A leader and mentor in the Republican Party for more than five decades, Mr. Fisher founded the National Jewish Coalition in 1985 to give Jewish Republicans a permanent, public presence in both the Jewish community and the Republican Party.

Today, as a result of Max Fisher's hard work and vision, the Republican Jewish Coalition (renamed in 2000) has 17,000 members nationwide, 35 local chapters in major Jewish community population centers, and four regional offices in addition to the national headquarters in Washington, DC. As the national grassroots organization of Jewish Republicans, the RJC has become the well-respected and effective voice for Jewish Republicans to Republican decision makers in all levels of government and to the greater Jewish community.

RJC National Chairman Sam Fox said, "Max inspired many, many people to get involved in the political process and to make a difference for our community and our country. His impact goes far beyond his own record of activism and involvement He was indeed a giant."

Past RJC Chairman Richard Fox said, "We are deeply saddened to lose such a good friend, but it is also a time to look back and celebrate Max's tremendous accomplishments. He was raised by hard- working immigrant parents. He carried the values they taught him into everything he did and became one of the most generous and influential American Jewish leaders in history."

Past RJC Chairman George Klein said, "It has been a special privilege to call Max Fisher a friend. He was a leader and a man of principle. He was not one of those who wanted fame or prestige. Max focused on doing what was right, what was needed, what would help. We will miss him very much."

Past RJC Chairman Cheryl Halpern said, "I learned so much from Max about politics, about leadership, and about people. He was a mentor and role model to me and to many others across the country. His passing is a great loss for all of us."

RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said, "Max Fisher instilled in me a passion for working within the Jewish community and a passion for politics. He taught me that politics was about serving the community, and that it demands integrity, character, and principle. That is the example Max set and the legacy he left us."

Mr. Fisher's wise counsel, generous support, and warm friendship have been deeply appreciated by the leaders and staff of the RJC. With his passing we have a lost a great friend, a leader in the truest sense. He will be sorely missed.

Republican Jewish Coalition

He was an amazing man. May he rest in peace.

#152 withintheheart, #155 Quark2&hearts:

Hmmm, verrry interesting that both the rag that worships fisk, al-independent, and the equally hateful...well almost, al-guardian feature this re red ken: Sharon is war criminal says Livingstone

...Mr Livingstone said the Israeli government presented a "wholly distorted picture of racism and religious discrimination in Europe", so it appeared Jews suffered most discrimination.

"The reality is that the great bulk of racist attacks in Europe today are on black people, Asians and Muslims. They are the primary targets of the extreme right."

Relations between the mayor and key sections of the Jewish community are tense because of his clash with the Evening Standard reporter Oliver Finegold and his subsequent refusal to apologise, and his invitation to the Muslim cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi to speak at a conference in London last year.

One of Mr Livingstone's most high-profile critics following the clash with Mr Finegold was Zvi Heifetz, the Israeli ambassador to London.

He said last night: "The mayor is confused once again. Ethnic cleansing was perpetrated in the concentration camps which he should know being such an expert on them.

"The dozens of world leaders who attended the London meeting only two days ago [all commend Mr] Sharon, for his courageous steps to achieve peace in the Middle East. ***

Commenting on the row with an article in Wednesday's Guardian, Henry Grunwald of the Board of Deputies said Mr Livingstone must reverse his stance and make amends, adding: "He has let us down. He has let his office down. Oliver Finegold deserves an apology, Holocaust survivors deserve an apology, the Jewish community deserves an apology and most of all, London deserves an apology. Then we can all move on."

The Board of Deputies has triggered an investigation into Mr Livingstone's conduct by the local government watchdog, the Standards Board for England.

A spokesman for the Board of Deputies last night accused Mr Livingstone of seeking to deflect attention away from his own behaviour by attacking Israel...

I still cannot understand, as I have said before, how on earth he was ever elected as the first Mayor of London, after the dissolution of the GLC..and the elected for a second term. I am afraid that London is growing ever closer to becoming a part of Eurabia, and it breaks my heart. I never felt like I was in "Europe' when I was in London..now? I don't think I will be going back for a visit again.

*** Sadly, the reporter ,who was spit on verbally by red ken, does not seem aware of the truth re Israel, nor of the horrific spread of Jew hate not only in London, but all over the UK. I fear that he is being PC to protect his own life.

they were the PRINTERS.

There isn't one! But that won't stop the one-worlder Liberals in black robes, not all Justices thanks be, from finding/inventing it. If they massage the First Amendment enough they may find we have no right to disagree as doing so creates a hate crime against others --- crazy but not unlikely given the state of PC.

Wish we could clone Scalia and Thomas and so get rid of a few of the others -- all of whom are liberals to one degree or other.
