Strib Attacks LGF with Lies

Sat, Mar 19, 2005 at 9:45:24 am PST

An idiot at the Minneapolis Star Tribune attacks Power Line and LGF today, in a blatantly dishonest “opinion” piece: Tamara Baker: Article on blogs should’ve said more on political divide.

After praising Daily Kos and Eschaton (two of the most hate-filled lefty blogs), Baker writes:

Black’s article also didn’t mention ‘Little Green Footballs,’ a right-wing blog whose founder, Charles Johnson, claims that he and not John Hinderaker’s PowerLineBlog was the first to lead the charge against Dan Rather last fall.

This is a lie. I challenge Baker and the Star Tribune to prove it (they can’t, because I’ve never written or said anything like this), or retract it publicly. They may label this an “opinion,” but that does not give the Star Tribune license to publish libelous, patently false statements.

To Baker, all “right wing” blogs are tools of Karl Rove, and we’re just like Stalin and Hitler.

In other words, Republicans for decades have wanted to control the press much as Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler did, by attacking and attempting to discredit independent journalism, and for them blogs are just the latest tool in their war.

Yawn.

UPDATE at 3/19/05 10:09:25 am:

You can let the Star Tribune know your opinion about this dishonest piece here: Feedback. (Hat tip: not neo just conservative.) I wrote to them, demanding a retraction.

And if you’d like to know a little more about Tamara Baker, the author of this attack, get a load of her web site: American Politics Journal. She makes Daily Kos look sane. (Hat tip: axiom.)

Maybe some of these boys crying wolf should actually be frog-marched to some work-camp for a three-year tour...if they could actually hold up to any "work".

Come to think of it, Minnesota is mostly Siberian-like in its climate for the majority of the year, so they'd have a pretty good headstart.

Oh, yeah...it's kind of ironic to insinuate that Charles and Karl Rove want to "control" the Media and the Strib is just sticking up for the little man.

I ask you: on whose "media" can you interact with the "publisher"? On whose "media" can you actually present facts in which to back up said interaction?

Not the newspapers, that's for sure.

Tha would be, like, Dan Rather saying his critics are driven by partisanship?
This comes from the same folks who believe in free speech unless it is (in their judgement) hate speech. Ward Churchill can talk about little Eichmans; but Columbus Day parades should be banned.

Sorry to be continuously off-topic -- I'm trying to be "ahead of the curve"! On the previous thread I posted about this topic, and now on this thread I'm posting about the next topic! Crazy. In any event:

OT

San Francisco Board of Supervisors votes to lower flags to half-mast to commemorate dead terrorists in Iraq. Luckily, the Mayor overruled the vote:

The weekend began with a controversy over the Board of Supervisors' decision to commemorate everyone who has died in the Iraq war, regardless of nationality, by flying the flag above City Hall at half-staff.

Mayor Gavin Newsom denied the request, arguing that the flag is to be flown at half-staff only when a prominent local figure dies or by order of the president or governor. Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, who sponsored the resolution to protest the United States' involvement in Iraq, denounced the decision as "deplorable."

The anti-Americanism has gotten to this: city governments want to lower the flag in honor of those people who are fighting against our troops.
Un-frickin'-believable.

David Brock, a former conservative activist who now runs a media-watchdog group called Media Matters for America, agrees with Franke-Ruta that Republicans' ultimate aim is the destruction of all objective reporting, so that they can say whatever they want, true or not, and get away with it.

Boatload of projection goin' on here.

And using David Brock, who once lied for the Right and now lies for the Left, to back up her argument just shows what a moonbat this Baker creature is.

The Strib must really be losing it these days. Minnesota, although still officially a blue state, is slowly becoming more and more conservative, despite the best efforts of the press. It was once solidly Democratic. That fact, and the presence of Powerline in their own backyard, is making them foam at the mouth.

Any claim. In fact, the facts just get in the way. The inmates at DU will defend, and the MSM will cover and or ignore.

Meanwhile, If any one who isn't a blatant leftwinger inadvertently lies or makes a mistake, they have to pay for it with constant scolding for weeks, months or years.

What do you expect. The Strib will not even call the Cleveland Indians, the Cleveland Indians because it is offensive. They call them the Baseball team from Cleveland, or the Cleveland Ball Club. Same with the Washington Redskins.

I think you get the point that the only thing I read there is the sports page (which despite that bit of pc thuggery is actually quite good for the MSM - well if you like following Minnesota teams).

Interestingly, the Strib's internet edition had a relationship with the most reknowned Twins related blogger, the Twins Geek. The Geek after one season was uncerimoniously dumped because of the complaints from the staff writers that he was just a blogger and not a real journalist. Not surprisingly, the Geek's stuff outdid most of the MSM stuff.

Thanks for the easy link to comments section Charles:

Regarding Tamara Baker's Opinion piece:

As a reader in San Francisco East Bay, I've followed Charles Johnson's 'LFG" blog daily for a couple of years:

Tamara Baker's statement that "‘Little Green Footballs,’ a right-wing blog whose founder, Charles Johnson, claims that he and not John Hinderaker’s PowerLineBlog was the first to lead the charge against Dan Rather last fall." is silly and blatantly false.

I've also edited all my children's draft English papers in High School. These Kids all got into selective colleges.

Tamara Baker's conclusion that: "In other words, Republicans for decades have wanted to control the press much as Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler did, by attacking and attempting to discredit independent journalism, and for them blogs are just the latest tool in their war." Wouldn't pass Sophomore (10th grade) English here.

You need to send her back to 8th grade to teach her how to construct the basic 5-paragraph argument essay.

You also need a "Truth in Advertising" disclaimer in the Headline of your paper... "The Star Tribune -- Suitable for new puppies and wrapping fish".

Could this be why the left blogs are so intent on making it their mission to attack "right" blogs?

Liberal and Leftist Bloggers Partnering With Mainstream Media
By Sher Zieve
MichNews.com
Mar 17, 2005
In a time when the leftist mainstream media is having increasing difficulty maintaining its monopoly on the news, the MSM are getting some needed and welcomed assistance. Liberal and leftist blog sites have offered to train and give needed ideas and assistance to their print and television brethren. The President of Democrats.com, Bob Fertik, has already helped the MSM with two conference calls. The participants who quickly acquired, and presumably used, Fertik’s call-in number include The Washington Post, CBS, MSNBC, Newsweek and the National Journal. These are just a few of the “news services” that would admit to it. Undoubtedly, there were more who wouldn’t.
One of the statements Fertik made was that ‘right-wing bloggers “invent” stories that more readily appear in mainstream media stories than do “progressive” (left-wing? Communist?) ones’. Really? The ‘right-wing bloggers’ invent stories?

Wow, there are oodles of whacky articles on Baker's site. The place is veritable treasure trove of silly things to slam the left about. My favorite is this post from National Lampoons' politics editor Steve Young:

Gee-elite-media-whillikers. You might as well say that infotainers like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, who have no real news experience or academic background to dissect complicated issues accurately, can't tell millions of fans the import of news and issues and how they should think about them! Tens of millions of believers will tell you that to silence those who tell them what to think would not only be immeasurably thoughtless, but it would leave them... thoughtless.

So only gen-u-ine brains like Young can do this? Accordingly then to Young only the properly trained people, who no doubt have the "correct" take on any given issue, are qualified to tell us what to think.

Shut down the blogs, people, Steve Young has finally enlightened us that we simply aren't equipped to make up our own minds about "complex" political "issues".

Caliphater @ 69

Everyone check out the article on Laura Ingraham, the brave author attacks her as the girl most likely "to perform drunken fellatio on her [Republican] friends from the Princeton Crew."

This excerpt of hers disturbs me... it is still considered crass and crude to speak, much less write, such in your face sexually explicit attacks... she is no better than Ted Rall... and she is supposedly a woman... As a woman, myself, I am deeply offended by this gross rhetoric from anyone, and especially someone who is noted as a "journalist." But doubly offended that it is another woman who stoops to this level... to attack another woman in such a vile manner...

Caliphater & Orson

Thanks Caliphater for setting me straight... on who the original writer was referring to Ms Ingram in such a blatantly crude manner...

Orson, I have seen other women LLL's "journalists" do the same so I can see how I jumped to the conclusion this little piece de crap came from her...

As for whether it is worse for it to come from a man or a woman.. First of all, it shouldn't even be written at all, like I said, it smacks of Ted Rall. But I now can't decide which is worse... I still lean towards it being "worse" coming from a woman, about a woman... I am in some ways a "feminist" in so much as I am glad to see that women have more opportunities than before... especially when it has been such a short time since women could not even obtain their own credit...

So for a "professional" woman to use sexually degrading false attacks upon another "professional" woman makes me think the woman making these remarks, is in some way, jealous, of the other woman... and is also a crude bitch with no manners to speak of...

125 obageegee  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 10:07:27am

Looks like Tamara Baker is taking cues from the Dave Berry School of Debate:

She has already filled some of the prerequisites for the the course:

1. Drinking Heavily
2. Making things up
3. Using obscure statistics
4. Compares your opponent to Hitler
5. Foam at the mouth (mine)

"I argue very well. Ask any of my remaining friends. I can win an
argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and
steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect,
they don't even invite me. You too can win arguments. Simply follow
these rules:

* Drink Liquor. (JD)

Suppose you're at a party and some hotshot intellectual is expounding
on the economy of Peru, a subject you know nothing about. If you're
drinking some health-fanatic drink like grapefruit juice, you'll hang
back, afraid to display your ignorance, while the hotshot entralls your
date. But if you drink several large shots of Jack Daniels, you'll
discover you have STRONG VIEWS about the Peruvian economy. You'll be a
WEALTH of information. You'll argue forcefully, offering searing
insights and possibly upsetting furniture. People will be impressed.
Some may leave the room.
* Make things up.

Suppose, in the Peruvian economy argument, you are trying to prove
Peruvians are underpaid, a position you base solely on the fact that
YOU are underpaid, and you're damned if you're going to let a bunch of
Peruvians be better off. DON'T say: "I think Peruvians are underpaid."
Say: "The average Peruvian's salary in 1981 dollars adjusted for the
revised tax base is $1,452.81 per annum, which is $836.07 before the
mean gross poverty level."

NOTE: Always make up exact figures.

If an opponent asks you where you got your information, make THAT up,
too. Say: "This information comes from Dr. Hovel T. Moon's study for
the Buford Commission published May 9, 1982. Didn't you read it?" Say
this in the same tone of voice you would use to say "You left your
soiled underwear in my bath house."
* Use meaningless but weightly-sounding words and phrases.

Memorize this list:

* Let me put it this way
* In terms of
* Vis-a-vis
* Per se
* As it were
* Qua
* So to speak

You should also memorize some Latin abbreviations such as "Q.E.D.,"
"e.g.," and "i.e." These are all short for "I speak Latin, and you do
not."

Here's how to use these words and phrases. Suppose you want to say:

"Peruvians would like to order appetizers more often, but they don't
have enough money."

You never win arguments talking like that. But you WILL win if you say:
"Let me put it this way. In terms of appetizers vis-a-vis Peruvians qua
Peruvians, they would like to order them more often, so to speak, but
they do not have enough money per se, as it were. Q.E.D."

Only a fool would challenge that statement.
* Use snappy and irrelevant comebacks.

You need an arsenal of all-purpose irrelevent phrases to fire back at
your opponents when they make valid points. The best are:

* You're begging the question.
* You're being defensive.
* Don't compare apples and oranges.
* What are your parameters?

This last one is especially valuable. Nobody, other than
mathematicians, has the vaguest idea what "parameters" means.

Here's how to use your comebacks:

You say - As Abraham Lincoln said in 1873...
Your opponents says - Lincoln died in 1865.
You say - You're begging the question.

OR

You say - Liberians, like most Asians...
Your opponents says - Liberia is in Africa.
You say - You're being defensive.
* Compare your opponent to Adolf Hitler.

This is your heavy artillery, for when your opponent is obviously right
and you are spectacularly wrong. Bring Hitler up subtly. Say: "That
sounds suspiciously like something Adolf Hitler might say" or "You
certainly do remind me of Adolf Hitler."
You now know how to out-argue anybody. Do not try to pull any of this
on people who generally carry wea
pons".

Tamara Baker, the ultimate diplomat, responding to a reader's email in 2001

Notice the tone in the email written to Baker. Then look at Baker's response, which includes this:

Your man LOST. Your man is a crook. Your man is a fraud, a Potemkin-human, propped up by beings smarter and even greedier than he is himself. You are on the side of immorality and evil. Get over it.

Will there be an SNDT? I went to bed last night before I had a chance to insult anyone or make an ass of myself...

Spunkman @ 169

Great post, I like this line from Tamara's response...

You are on the side of immorality and evil. Get over it.

Hmm, on the side of "immortality." How interesting. This is surely delusional thinking on her part. But if she isn't delusional, then how lucky we are... we are "THE IMMORTALS."

Yeah...

172 Bubble Girl  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 11:57:58am

Hey Aladin... I have no idea about the SNDT... I am going to go out into the world for a change... LOL LOL so it is up to you and others to carry on...

Oh wait, that was Samara, in The Ring.

175 plutosdad  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 12:01:51pm

Wow, she is a total nutjob. And a bigot. And a bitch.

Lefties think the fact that we want FACTS not OPINIONS is trying to stifle free speech.

Yet, they are the ones that promote PC speech, hate speech laws, "fairness" in broadcasting, and MoveOn.org is the one that wants the FCC to look into FOX. Kerry is the one that says we have "to do something" about media outlets that don't toe the party line.

God I can't stand these hypocrites anymore. AAAUUUGGGHHH!

Thank god we're going to get tough on the appellate court nominees to get some strict constructionists in there, to stop the control of free speech the lefties are trying to achieve.

For anyone that lives in Minnesota, write to the Strib's advertisers, not the editors. The editors don't care: they hate you.

If one more big advertiser pulls out like a few months ago, we might see some change for increased responsibility and truth at the Strib.

Tamara Baker is **40**? She looks like a 70ish woman who works in a school cafeteria.

Not that there's anything wrong with working in a cafeteria.

#155 It's Miss Donna V. to you

You are correct about female moonbats. For example the Wonkette is incapable of posting without some snarky sexual reference to Republicans.

Powerline has a great posting about teh Democrats being in "A Permanent Opposition" with Kerry-Edwards lawn signs still up, etc.

183 mardukhai  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 12:46:49pm

What an asshole:

"Its posters and readers are known for things such as cheering the death of peace activist Rachel Corrie and making bigoted comments about female Muslim tsunami victims."

Peace activist? What a bloody damned liar! Pancake Corrie was a exterminationist, fascist bitch who died defending an arms smuggling network. We never cheered her death, merely that she asked for it by diving in front of an armored bulldozer.

And who said anything about female Muslim tsunami victims? (Although I can't imagine them knowing how to swim very well.)

Typical leftist crap. (And yeah, I'm still a Democrat! Worse -- I'm a journalist and former labor organizer, like David Ben Gurion! Care to make something of it?)

184 Frank IBC  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 12:57:46pm

Graphic from Baker's Website

What? George Stephanopoulos is one of those evil conservatives?

185 mardukhai  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 1:02:48pm

By the way, did anyone make fun of female tsunami victims?

I don't think it is disrespecting the dead to note that the society in which they were raised required that they walk around in clothing that would absorb a ton of water and prevent them from swimming.

And would never allow them to learn to swim.

That's making fun of them? No, that's saying that they would have been better off Buddhist or anything else.

The Horror . . . the horror . . . the horror

Hm. She's as ugly as her soul.

Would she be any better if she looked like a goddess? Probably not, though I'm sure some people would think she was a nice person... until she spoke or until they read her rantings.

187 vero  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 1:59:03pm

She believes in abortion, too bad her mom didn't.

188 Lynn B.  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 2:06:14pm

Hmmm. I didn't have to register. Not to read it and not to send this comment:

Is the air a little thin in St. Paul these days? Wherever did Tamara Baker get the idea that "'Little Green Footballs,' a right-wing blog whose founder, Charles Johnson, claims that he and not John Hinderaker's PowerLineBlog was the first to lead the charge against Dan Rather last fall."?

Had Ms. Baker bothered to review the entries at LGF on the day in question, she would have noted that Charles Johnson specifically and unambiguously credited PowerLine with having broken the Rathergate story. See especially the following two posts:

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
("...as Power Line points out this morning, the documents (which can be found in PDF form at CBS News) are highly questionable.")

and

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]
("Our first post about this, shortly after Power Line’s post, was at 8:30 am Pacific. By 8:30 pm Pacific, an investigation is underway at CBS.")

Of course in light of the absurdity of Baker's "analysis" in this piece (and everywhere else, actually), it's hardly surprising that she would stoop to outright fabrication to support it. She has nothing else.

Ms. Baker and the Star Tribune both owe Mr. Johnson, and your readers, a public apology.

Let's not hold our breath.

189 Powderfinger  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 2:08:26pm

Tamara looks like the love child of Al Franken and Penn Jillette.

Apologies to Penn Jillette.

190 foreign devil  Sat, Mar 19, 2005 2:22:31pm

Tamara Schmara is a radical left-winger. Check out this sentence from the article:

"...While PowerLine tries to sound calmly professional, the Little Green Footballs blog is much more vicious in its conservatism. Its posters and readers are known for things such as cheering the death of peace activist Rachel Corrie and making bigoted comments about female Muslim tsunami victims..."

How can you be "viciously conservative". Isn't that a classic oxymoron from this MORON?

Ignore her, Charles! She has an agenda and she's "on mission" and "on message" so she's braindead.

Since the Nazi metaphores aren't working, the LLLs are trying a new tack...

"We are, in short, fighting Pol Pot on our own soil.", this was in reference to our president.

193 htom  Sun, Mar 20, 2005 2:48:14pm

Oh, I get that fishwrap every morning. Gotta know what the enemy's planing, after all. Note that they charge 50 cents for their left-wing preachings, while the St. Paul paper only charges 25 cents and has a more balanced editorial section. And that the Red Star has finally found a new Reader's Representative (the former one was reassigned to being a part-time religious reporter and is (or was) suing for age discrimination.)

194 Greg  Mon, Mar 21, 2005 4:48:23am

Charles,

I know Tamara Faye Baker up close and afar and yes she and her husband can really go El Cubo at times. She was a writer for Absolute Sound stereounkie magazine for years as a reviewer and a grad. I believe of the Univ. of Minnesota.

They also alienate every friendship around them that is not of their Stalinist political persuasion.

She is also a Federal Bureaucrat with last time I had heard at the Department of Agriculture with her husband at Social Security Administration.

They need a good fisking like Chutch at UC...
