-RetweetBolton Accuser Admits Plagiarism at Daily Kos

Tue, Apr 26, 2005 at 8:23:02 am PDT

The movement to smear and discredit John Bolton is melting down. Bolton accuser Melody Townsel, former leader of Mothers Opposing Bush, is about to get outed as a plagiarizer, and she’s whining about it to the people who understand her best—the lunatics at Daily Kos: Important Melody Townsel revelation—PLEASE DISSEMINATE. (Hat tip: DANEgerus.)

Hello, Daily Kos-ers:

Tonight, my deepest fears regarding my pending testimony in the John Bolton nomination process have come true: Republicans have dredged up un unfortunate chapter of my life and, clearly, are about to announce it to the world. When you read this, you may decide either that I was stupid to step forward, or that I no longer deserve your trust. I want, however, to be the one to announce this to you all since you’ve been so unbelievably supportive.

When I was in college, 22 years ago, I plagiarized some columns while working for my college newspaper, and I was removed from staff. Months later, while working for another college newspaper, I wrote a review for a local play that tracked closely in format to another writer’s review — and, although it was not plagiarized, it made my editors, who had become aware of my recent past, very uncomfortable, and we mutually agreed that I would no longer submit stories to them.

As you can imagine, I’m deeply ashamed to be forced to revisit these events so publicly — and, while I was under tremendous academic, financial and family pressure at the time, there is absolutely NO excuse for what I did so long ago. I knew it was wrong then, and I remain deeply ashamed and embarrassed.

I wish to stress that Amy, my friend who has been such a staunch supporter and has been keeping you posted on things happening with my pending testimony, was completely unaware of these events. There are some things you don’t tell even your best friend.

It goes on and on.

UPDATE at 4/26/05 8:30:38 am:

Power Line outs another Bolton accuser as an anti-Israel State Department drone: John Bolton and His Enemies.

7 Anna  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 6:27:37am

Its the Spawn of Churchill... sounds like a good B-grade horror movie.

Plagerizing is cheating, it is about dishonesty. It is stealing someone's work and passing it off as your own. Ask Sen. Biden about that speech he 'borrowed' from a UK politician.

If the far left are willing to dredge up an alleged incident from 22 years ago to smear Bolton then this is fair game. It shows the accuser has in the past had an integrity issue.

8 Mr. Neutron  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 6:27:46am

The irony escapes them, that a prior misdeed (excuses to follow) might be dredged up to discredit someone.

I can forgive a lot, but plagerism is theft of the worst form. Stealing intellectual or artistic creations is like stealing one's soul.

I am speaking as an individualist. I guess the collectivists feel that all property -real or intellectual - belongs to the group. So, there is no barrier to using someone elses work and calling it your own.

Please. I wrote for and edited my college newspaper in various departments. There were a couple of semesters where I turned in three articles a week. I covered women's softball, wrote a humor column, and wrote news and feature articles.

I didn't so much as copy a single word without full attribution (e.g., using quotes). I am extremely proud of the fact that the Montclarion never had to issue a correction on any article I wrote.

And I worked full-time nights at the Post Office for a year while doing full-time work at the newspaper and carrying a part-time course load. (We won't discuss the family situation, which was like any other college kid living home and commuting to class.)

In other words, don't blame your situation for your lack of ethics, Melody.

I think it relates back to what another LGF'er said in another thread way back when. Some on the left measure justice as an end, not a means. So it isn't the process that is important, but the outcome. So it is perfectly ok to do bad things (lie, plagerize, withold info) if you think the resulting outcome will fit your worldview.

(fist post. gosh, I hope it doesn't sound too stupid)

What a maroon (sic). This is one of the absolute stupidest things the press has ever given credence to. It's almost as bad as the grandma and grandpa going to the mall and listening to the Cell phone scanner in their station wagon and just happening to pick up a conversation with Newt Gingrich and some republican leaders. Well of course they turned on their in-car tape recorder to tape the whole thing.

Don't you turn on your tape recorder every time you hear someone famous on your in-car mobile Cell phone receiver?

When will they stop thinking they can fool everyone? It is so transparent.

By the the time this is over the friends of the enemies of this nation will have revealed the extent of their efforts to make themself "look good" by making fictional character asassination a party plank. "The Dems' efforts to beat [UN ambassador nominee John] Bolton on ideological grounds -- that he's too pro-American and has 'disdain' for the UN -- having failed, they turned to that old standby, the politics of personal destruction. Various bureaucrats alleged that Bolton had hurt their feelings. Most recently -- try not to laugh -- a woman who heads a group called Mothers Opposing Bush claimed that Bolton 'chased her through the halls of a Moscow hotel' in 1994. The committee was supposed to vote [last Tuesday] afternoon, but Democrats urged a delay so they could dredge up more silly stories." --James Taranto WSJ

Kofi Annan is a failure and a disgrace. And the last thing he and his evil minions (Dodd, Kerry, Boxer, Chirac, Biden, Kennedy, et all - the usual motley crew of degenerates, plagerists, murderers, and drunks) want at the UN is a brilliant man of honor, integrity and moral unequivocation.

Listen to the always ethical Barbara Boxer being interviewed by CNN about the fact that she has large numbers of family members working for her in the Senate (you know- just like Delay is being crucified for!):

Question by CNN:

ONE OF THE CRITICISMS HAS BEEN THAT DELAY HAD SOME OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS ON HIS PAYROLL. YOUR SON'S FIRM WAS PAID MORE THAN $130,000 OVER FOUR YEARS BY YOUR POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE. IS THAT FAIR?

Answer by Boxer:

believe that the most important thing for us is to have the best people running our campaigns and our PACs. If we're just putting family on the payroll to get them money, that's unethical. But if they are truly doing the work and they are very qualified--in my own case, my son is a lawyer, and I'm very fortunate that he's willing to do this and does a great job at it.

DIDYA catch that? Its OK for Boxer because her family members on the Gov't payroll are reallly, really, reallly qualified!

#47 kerrykounselor: Why didn't she own up to this on her own then? You're a pathetic joke. I suppose it also speaks well in your liberal world about her integrity that she smears Bolton on alleged past behavior, yet expects no one to think less of her because of her past behavior.

This episode is a sure sign that in their hearts, liberals do not expect the American public to entrust them with power for a long time. That's the only way I can explain them not worrying about their judicial nominees being filibustered, and other nominees shunned because they might have had an argument with a co-worker a decade or two ago.

We have all done something in the past we are ashamed of so forgiveness is good.

The problem these people have is there is a cost to those indiscretions. Once you break a trust you need to spend time on doing things perfect to gain that trust back.

You are the one with the debt to pay and trust is earned not given.

112 atlasshrugged  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 6:57:55am

Quick word on the Politcs of Destruction: posted on wrong thread (sorry)

The Patriot on the Delay Witch Hunt:

These objections in and of themselves could be considered just more confirmation hearings muddled by partisanship. However, when the current situation regarding House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is also considered, it becomes apparent that something larger is under way, something uglier -- if possible -- than just old-fashioned Washington politics.

Congressional Democrats have declared war against Republicans on the Hill, and in this fight they are not looking to outclass the Grand Old Party with craftier legislation. They are not looking to dazzle the electorate with high-minded promises of more power to the people. They have instead reinstituted what Bill Clinton called "the politics of personal destruction," leveling all manner of charges against Delay of which they are more guilty.

For example, there are questions about DeLay's 1997 trip to Russia, but it was privately (and legally) funded by the National Center for Public Policy Research. When it comes to trips funded by taxpayers, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has spent six times more than Tom DeLay.

Regarding the flap over family members on the political payroll, DeLay came under fire for paying his wife and daughter for their campaign work with campaign funds. In 2002, Sen. Barbara Boxer paid her son $150,000 for similar services from campaign coffers. Vermont Representative Bernie Sanders has paid his wife and stepdaughter more than $150,000 since 2000.

Melody Townsel complains that Republicans "dredged up an unfortunate chapter", yet has she not dredged up alleged harassment claims against John Bolton? What boggles my mind, especially when both sexes have to walk on egg shells in a working environment to avoid anything that is even remotely related to harassment, is why at that time when it was and still is fashionable to bring up such charges, she failed to report the incident to her superiors. On top of that her former co-workers cannot remember any such incident which I find very interesting. What's even worse is that the committee investigating/reviewing Bolton is focused on a few claims because Bolton was a "big bad bully boss". If this were a dominate trait of Bolton there would be lines of people speaking against Bolton and actual physical proof -- formal complaints. Where are they? What the committee needs to evaluate is this, “Is John Bolton the right man, at the right time for the job? The committee knowing full well the trouble the UN is in; its own house of horrors, Bolton is just what IS needed. The US does not need a spineless bureaucrat yes man who folds at the whims of third world corrupt diplomats like a cheap doormat and says nothing. Sadly we have had too many of them in the past. I hope the Republican do infact "dredge" up her past and maybe her work history.

This is heartening news. I thought Bolton was sunk.

Really, if the Repubs. can't get Bolton the appointment then I'm almost through with them*. They've been ridiculously disorganized ever since the election.

I mean, I like the idea of privatizing social security, but not at the exclusion of more important things, like foreign policy and getting judges appointed. Social security won't be significantly worse in 4 years.

It's gut check time, Republicans. Do what people elected you to do or expect to get tossed out of office.

*(If Bolton is denied office, Bush could still salvage a win by withdrawing the US from the UN entirely. Sort of like when France blocked the UN resolution on Iraq--all of a sudden it became France's fault that there wasn't a resolution. Maybe Bush could make our withdrawal from the UN the Democrat's fault. That'd be richly deserved.)

01/25/05 A Day in the Life in North Oak Cliff

I awake to find several urgent e-mails from neighbors alerting me to three separate, serious criminal incidents that occurred in the last couple of days here in North Oak Cliff. I read and quickly dispatch them to neighbors who share my concerns about our rising crime rate, then hop into the car to take my 5 year old to school. I back out of my driveway onto our street, Winnetka Avenue, the street where Oscar Sanchez was kidnapped last week.

I dodge three major potholes on the way to I-35, wait briefly at a malfunctioning red light, then head south to the private school in DeSoto where we enrolled at great financial sacrifice out of concerns about the quality of education on offer at our local DISD elementary. Along our last leg to school, we drive past an apartment complex at Old Hickory and Wheatland Road, the scene of the first quadruple murder of 2005.

My daughter safely in the classroom, I return to Oak Cliff and stop for coffee in the Bishop Arts District, meeting up with friends who relate details about yet another carjacking, this time about 500 yards around the corner from where we live. Coffee in hand, I head back to my office in my restored, 95-year-old home, driving past a mountain of trash bags laying in the street along the curbside of an empty house - bags the City agreed to collect as a "courtesy" more than three weeks ago.

It states:

I am the person who took over as the Team Leader of the US AID Kyrgyzstan project when Ms. Townsel was removed from her job.

After hearing from all parties, I concluded that Ms. Townsel left a trail of mismanagement, misappropriations of funds, and lack of professionalism, which resulted in shock despair and resentment among numerous people, including Kygyz government officials.

Ms. Townsel, it was told to me, was rude during her interactions with government officials, our hosts. She often screamed, threw temper tantrums and threatened to report them to their governmental superiors, I was told. Her erratic behavior was, literally, the talk of the town.

The Bush administration's nominee to be ambassador to the United Nations once threw a file folder and a tape dispenser at an American businesswoman in Moscow, disparaged her weight and alleged she was gay...

Pretty impolite behaviour if true, did she make these allegations at the time? Apparently she did.

Kirby Jones , a Washington consultant, said Townsel told him of Bolton's behavior at the time. Jones, who was then executive vice president of the public relations firm Burson-Marsteller, hired Townsel in late 1994 to work on projects in the former Soviet Union

Woman accuses Bolton of harassment

Now the interesting bit. Is this "Kirby Jones - washington consultant" who supports Melody's allegations the same as this Kirby Jones - Washington Consultant?

Kirby Jones

Jones currrently is President of Alamar Associates, a Washington D.C. based firm which offers a full range of market entry and consulting services to companies wishing to do business with Cuba.

I suppose a consultant who helps companies do business with Cuba wouldn't want a hardliner as US ambasador to the UN. There's a nice picture of him with Castro at that link.

Time to get serious

The committee was ready to vote last week, with a favorable majority lined up, when Mr. Voinovich complained that since he was AWOL when Mr. Bolton testified before the committee a week earlier, he needed more time to find out what everybody was talking about. George Voinovich is often out of the loop and, senators being what they are, the committee passed. The Voinovich maneuver was actually about giving cover to Lincoln Chafee and Chuck Hagel, who itch to throw a dirty tennis shoe in the president's punch bowl but don't have the manly orbs to do it.

The squeamish among us must not think about how Lyndon Johnson would have resolved this; suffice it to say the senator would have left the Oval Office singing only the soprano's arias, with the understanding that if Ohio gets a new post office this decade, Ohioans would have only Mike DeWine, the other Ohio senator, to thank for it.

President Bush, remembering his Republican manners, said only that the Democrats are "playing politics." Well, duh. "Politics" is what we do in Washington. What the Democrats are doing is using the Bolton nomination to assert their determination to run things, no matter who thinks they're in control.

Manly orbs! LOL!

Remember, these are the same folks who have no problem with adultery in the Oval office. The words I remember where, "it's only about sex." So I suppose this is "only about cheating and lying."

If Ms. Melony was so worried about her worst fears, perhaps she should have announced her previous cheats before hand. As it is, now one is left to wonder about half-truths and what else she hasn't revealed?

Did mean old Mr. Bolton hurt Melony's feelings? Did he show a lack of tolerance for political correctness? Did he refuse to worship at the altar of the U.N.? Or did he commit the ultimate sin; professing his faith in public? Oh, the horror!

ONE OF THE CRITICISMS HAS BEEN THAT DELAY HAD SOME OF HIS FAMILY MEMBERS ON HIS PAYROLL. YOUR SON'S FIRM WAS PAID MORE THAN $130,000 OVER FOUR YEARS BY YOUR POLITICAL ACTION COMMITTEE. IS THAT FAIR?

That's 32,500 dollars per year. For a small business, that's chump change. Hell, my dad, who never even set foot on a college campus, makes more than that per year. And his job doesn't have anything to do with politics.

I *just* graduated from college and I've started out at about 30,000 per year. So basically, DeLay is paying his son's firm the kind of money a newly minted computer programmer 3 months out of college should make for some pretty hefty political advice.

I bet Boxer's son makes *quite* a bit more money than that.

GERRYMANDERING

* What is gerrymandering?
Gerrymandering is a term that describes the deliberate rearrangement of the boundaries of congressional districts to influence the outcome of elections.

* Where did gerrymandering come from?
The original gerrymander was created in 1812 by Massachusetts governor Elbridge Gerry, who crafted a district for political purposes that looked like a salamander.

* What is the purpose of gerrymandering?
The purpose of gerrymandering is to either concentrate opposition votes into a few districts to gain more seats for the majority in surrounding districts (called packing), or to diffuse minority strength across many districts (called dilution).

* How has Congress regulated redistricting?
In 1967, Congress passed a law requiring all U.S. representatives to be elected from single member districtsóthe system we use today. Congress in 1982 amended the Voting Rights Act to protect the voting rights of protected racial minorities in redistricting. Within those laws, states have great leeway to draw districts, which often leads to gerrymandering

A bit OT

I agree, it is disheartening as a life-long comic-book fan to see the work that some of my favorite artists and writers have put out since 9/11.

I quit reading Plastic Man because of one panel in issue 10, wherein Plastic Man walks by a gas pump, comments about the high price of gas, and states "Mission accomplished."

Judd Winick, of MTV's "The Real World" show, wrote a critically acclaimed graphic novel called "Pedro and Me" about his time with another Real World star, who died of AIDS. I haven't read it, but it seemed like every time he took on a new series at DC Comics, he would insert a gay character, or have a character contract HIV, he even had Robin dress in drag for undercover work.

Wizard magazine, one of the largest-circulated comics magazines, had an article based on the best drawings by Alex Ross, a critically-acclaimed painter (and fan-favorite). Now, every one of these paintings were comics related, except for the one he did for the Village Voice--of George Bush as a vampire biting the Statue of Liberty's neck.

Another writer, Joe Kelly, has written a couple of stories likening our liberating of Iraq to an invasion (through thinly-veiled stories using the Justice League of America).

The point to all of this? I do not want to have politics injected into my comics stories, unless that is the purpose of the comic book itself. I read comics to be entertained, and maybe to escape my current day-to-day trappings. I have since stopped reading Plasticman, Wizard Magazine, and anything written by Joe Kelly or Judd Winick. They offer me nothing. I haven't written the editors of the respective comics and magazines, as I think that the leanings of the artists and writers reflect the industry as a whole (of course, painting with a broad brush).

Even Art Spiegelman, of Maus and Maus II fame, wrote an LLL graphic novel based on the events of 9/11. I witnessed the events from my office window, and I shop at a comic shop 2 blocks away from where the towers stood; I don't need to contribute to the "Blame America" attitude that these artists embrace.

There's two sides to the Texas Gerrymandering story. It's been said that all the Republicans did was undo a gerrymander that had already been put in place by Texas Democrats. I wouldn't put it past them. This is the same crew who left the State twice rather than allow a vote on redistricting to take place.

I think there might actually be three. IIRC, redistricting activity has to have a specfied temporal relationship to the census, e.g., can only be done once after each census. What DeLay pulled is evidently 'out of cycle'. I think.

But NOT ok to dredge up FACTS on those people from the past.

First off, Melody's charges is the least germaine to Bolton's potential performance as UN ambassador. But the media, being what it is, gave them the most play because of the lurid details involved.

The reason Bolton's nomination is dead is that moderate Republicans see this as a chance to push against the views of the Bush foreign policy team. Bolton's boorish behavior and inability to manage subordinates has given people like Voinovich the opportunity.

Great article in WaPo about this.

257 Geepers  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 8:14:12am

Too funny:

Moms With A Goal: Unseat Bush

When these women add "unseat the incumbent president" to their list of things to do, that president has a problem.

Aside:

Jonah,

I saw your comments about the headline switch on Susan Reimer's column. While you are truly a media power to behold, in this case the explanation for the switch was something simpler.

When stories -- especially columns -- come over in the automatic feed to the web site overnight, sometimes the headline from the jump page gets incorrectly inserted as the main headline. The first headline ("In a grassroots movement, moms of all political persuasions organize to oust Bush") ran today on page 5E, and spanned all six columns. The main headline ("Moms with a goal: unseat Bush") spans two columns on the "Today" section front, 1E.

An online producer here noticed it and fixed it this morning.

Geez, if you're that strict, you'll never be able to listen to good music or see decent art ever again!

Lots of artsy types are liberal, it's endemic to a profession. Maus and Maus II are great books, but Speigleman is off the deep end in his recent work (I wouldn't be surprised if all of his non-Maus work is very liberal, but I don't know). Safe Area Gorazde, by Joe Sacco, is worth reading, even though his Palestine is awful liberal pablum. Sure, their liberal leanings probably distort the books somewhat, but the stories must be told.

If Bolton actually is the deranged asshole that the Dems make him out to be then he'd be the perfect candidate. He'd give the UN that final push down the road to irrelevance.

IMHO the best candidate for that position would be a drunk gorilla in heat. Or just put a big sign on the desk which says "Veto!"

Hello, Daily Kos-ers:

Crow: Would "Daily Los-ers" be too easy?
Mike: Yes.

Tonight, my deepest fears regarding my pending testimony in the John Bolton nomination process have come true:

Crow: I woke up next to John Bolton.
Servo: Wouldn't that be JOHN BOLTON'S deepest fear?

When I was in college, 22 years ago,

Mike: Dinosaurs still roamed the Earth, and Michael Moore was still svelte.

I plagiarized some columns while working for my college newspaper, and I was removed from staff

Servo: She needed to plagiarize for a COLLEGE NEWSPAPER?
Crow: Whoa! Lo-ser!
Mike: Isn't that like Charles Bukowski needing help for his column in Puking in the Gutter magazine?

Months later, while working for another college newspaper, I wrote a review for a local play that tracked closely in format to another writer’s review —

Crow: Well, I'm so-ree, but there are only so many ways you can say '"My Name is Rachel" sucks ass' without stepping on some other guy's toes.

As you can imagine, I’m deeply ashamed to be forced to revisit these events so publicly

Servo: As I shall now express through interperative dance.

and, while I was under tremendous academic, financial and family pressure at the time, there is absolutely NO excuse for what I did so long ago.

Crow: However, union regulations require me to blame the Jooos.

I wish to stress that Amy, my friend who has been such a staunch supporter and has been keeping you posted on things happening with my pending testimony,

Mike: ... is the REAL VILLAIN! Kill HER, not me!

There are some things you don’t tell even your best friend.

Servo: Hence, I didn't realise I had BO until I was 37 years old.

.(insert "too tired to continue MSTing icon" here)

Many people also don't believe we should be creating new subcategories of trauma to deal with emotions created by something as banal as an election. Neal Boortz explained this view with characteristic bluntness:
These people are weak. They're emotional cripples. They can't cope with life without the help and support of their grand caretaker government. They can't even cope with an election loss. They sit there with blank expressions, mouths hanging open like a brook trout, staring off into the distance. These are not the people that you could depend on when the chips are down. They're a pathetic indication of things to come, of the "grief counseling" culture that permeates our society today. There's a fight at the local government school? Rush in the grief counselors. Someone accidentally sets off a fire alarm? Grief counselors. Too many red lights on the way to your canasta game? Grief Counselors.

It's not often, but liberality is pretty close on this one. Bush came out of the election with fire. His use of the term "political capital" was frequent. What the media and Democrats have sought to do is to decrease the value of that capital. They're trying to reel in the tide that is drowning the Democrat party and slowly killing the media.

Bush's political capital is basically being torn apart. The White House went right for the jugular with Social Security reform. This is a huge obstacle in Washington politics. But what has really taken the hits has been the Iraq policy architects. Anyone at Foggy Bottom, the Pentagon or the White House that was on board with the pre-emption policy must be tar and feathered for the Democrats and the Media to stay meaningful.

With the passing of the Pope it has given the media the chance to savage people of faith -- the wrong people of faith, ie the conservative breed -- as they engage in the public square. The media is the quasi church of the left. If religious conservatives continue to push back then the religion of journalism continues to bleed the slow death.

The "moderate" Republicans are acting like idiots. Where the hell are their advisers on the political fallout for going against the grain that INCREASED Republican numbers in Washington. There is no center on foreign policy. The so called realists that Chris Matthews is always crying for are the old guard. The new realists are the post 9/11 policy makers that are infusing the old with the new. The media rails against these people as "neoconservatives" while they ignore the new challenges that we HAVE TO FACE.

And don't get me started on the ambassadors. Dan Coates to Germany? Puh-leeze. The man doesn't speak the language and in the runup to the Iraq invasion he was positively mute in the German media. #281 grayp: Heya!

OK, I don't get it. DeLay the politician acted like a politician within his own party. Lobbying, bartering, same as it ever was. This is certainly no secret. Maybe it's just semantics, but I don't put the responsibility for the way a legislator votes on anyone but himself. I certainly wouldn't let one of mine say "Hey, don't blame me for my vote! (Company/ person/ orbital satellite) forced me to do it! I had no say in the matter!" Same as I wouldn't let Barbara Boxer off the hook for saying "Don't blame me, Hillary/ the Sierra Club forced me to vote this way!"

Legislators are constantly asked to do things by interested parties. Thousands of times in their terms they weigh the good and bad and decide to do them, or not to. It's their own responsibility, not the result of anyone "pulling" anything over them.

330 Nancy  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 8:55:36am

If this woman actually wrote this to post on KOS before she testifies before Congress, she is stupid.

Republicans have dredged up un unfortunate chapter of my life and, clearly, are about to announce it to the world

Well, whether the Republicans would have ever raised it at the congressional hearings and "announce it" to the world is now moot. She has just done that and now insured it will be an issue.

Did she really think the Republicans would not check the backgrounds of the witnesses testifying against the administrations candidate? That's just dumb.

The reason Bolton's nomination is dead is that moderate Republicans see this as a chance to push against the views of the Bush foreign policy team. Bolton's boorish behavior and inability to manage subordinates has given people like Voinovich the opportunity.

Perhaps. That's one opinion from the article. Of course, other opinions in the article don't support your supposition. It will be interesting to see if the WAPO Analysts are right in this case. I, for one, don't believe the nomination is dead yet.

It truly is a power game.

And, as more of Bolton's accusers stories are shown to be politically driven and of no substance, it detracts from the entire case the Democrats are trying to build against Bolton. At some point, the moderate Republicans may wake up to the fact that they are being used by the opposition to "get Bush". At that point, they may close ranks.

So, Melony and the other "character" witnesses are important to the fight; but not to get Bolton un-nominated.

333 Geepers  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 8:59:45am

Could the Democrats be any more whiney?

Reid described his relationship with Bush in personal terms during yesterday’s reporters’ breakfast, referring to him as “this guy” and describing meetings with Bush at the White House as lectures. He lamented that Bush takes up most of the meeting time discoursing on foreign affairs and leaving Democratic leaders little time to ask questions.

Boo hoo. Didn't the President get down and beg for your opinion Harry? You poor thing. Come here and let me give you a big hug.

And if you think Democrats are two faced hypocrites look no further than their leader in the Senate:

contrasting Reid’s claim that “there is no more positive agenda than saving Social Security” to one made two days later, when he said, “The so-called Social Security crisis exists in only one place: the minds of Republicans.”

Take your pick. Harry's both firmly "for" and "against". Now that's nuanced.

I hope many people draw a lesson from the "independent" status that diplomats and military veterans should enjoy. When you, like the Diplomats for Change, Musicians for Change, etc, engage in partisan politics openly advocating one candidate over the other you cloud your reputation on important matters of the American Interest. You cannot permit yourself to become a tool of a political campaign if you wish to remain an independent scholar on American Foreign Service.

It is best to stay out of the political situation so you can remain focused on the intentions of the foreign service. STAY AWAY FROM POLITICS.

Frederick Vreeland joins the ranks of so many other diplomats that have destroyed themselves as they kiss the feet of John Kerry.

He utterly humiliated them. Remember Texas was a Dem state for a looong time. How many electoral votes in Texas? The implications for this are at the state level, the Congressional level all the way up to the WH. This really is a big deal. And the K St thing doesn't go down well either, but that's more an 'inside the beltway' issue. Tom DeLay is one of the better politicians I've observed. To his friends, he can't do enough for 'em, always there. To those on the other side that he respects, he's a straight shooter. To his enemies, he's lethal. And he never publically takes credit for much - as opposed to Gingrich the media whore. Which is why I smack my forehead over the Abramoff thing. Inexplicable.

From your link, Robert Stacy McCain makes some assertions that require a closer look.

In the 1970s, Americans were warned an "energy crisis" meant the world would soon run out of oil. Three decades later, no one predicts exhaustion of the petroleum supply — ever.

Not true. People are talking about peak oil, inlcuding experts who appear in the documentary End of Suburbia.

In the 1990s, liberals screamed that poor children would starve to death because of welfare reform and Republicans' "draconian" cuts in social programs. Fast forward to 2005: experts now warn of an obesity epidemic among poor children.

Is this from an overabundance of food, creating juvenile gourmands among the poor population--or is the "obesity epidemic" a result of poor nutrition choices and a sedentary lifestyle?

346 Simple Voice  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 9:08:55am

This is the last paragrapgh from the Powerline entry on Vreeland and Bolton.

So Frederick Vreeland's opposition to Bolton, which is being promoted as a non-partisan critique by a "former colleague," throws the issue of Bolton's nomination into stark relief. John Bolton stands for a certain set of opinons and values, which mirror those of President Bush: he doesn't think America is to blame for terrorist attacks; he doesn't think the U.N. is morally superior to the U.S.; he thinks the job of an American diplomat is to advance the interests of the United States, not other countries; and he sees neither virtue nor advantage in treachery toward American allies, especially Israel. Bolton's enemies hate him because of these values and opinions, not because he lacks the suave manners of the State Department clique that, for decades, has gotten everything wrong about the Middle East.

So let me see if I understand this correctly:

according to "krazykouselor" we need to give Melody Townsel courage points for coming out with the truth about her history of plagiarism.

Also, that when you mess up, you should come forward.

Then suddenly he switches to Tom Delay.

I guess Melody is coming forward because she actually did something wrong. She was caught plagiarizing.

Tom Delay is supposed to confess what? That other people think he did something wrong?

Mr. Bolton is supposed to confess what? How is he supposed to know WHAT to confess...no one has been able to verify what Melody is saying. In fact, people at the time (Rich Lowry article at NRO) remember she complained about all kinds of things, but not about Mr. Bolton.

I am glad Melody came forward about her plagiarism, and the senators can weigh that in considering her other testimony.
How is this related to Tom Delay?

348 quark2  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 9:11:14am

@249 grayp

Actually what was happening was supposed to have been done years ago, via court order. The democrats had gerrymandered the redistricting some time ago to their advantage.
Last year when our juvenile fellow democrats ran away from Texas twice was because it was being forced down their throats.
They opted to see the legislature not have enough present for voting on this, by being absent.
Both times the Texas Rangers were sent to arrest them and bring them back to Austin, forcing them to be present in session.

Human nature at its best and worst. Those who are doers are always hated by those who would rather do just enough to get by.

Um, in what world does the following:

Republicans have dredged up un unfortunate chapter of my life and, clearly, are about to announce it to the world.

count as having the "courage to come forward." She's just practicing damage control. C'mon, even a barking moonbat should be able to see that.

Also, unlike with the plagarism, we have seen no proof that DeLay did anything wrong. Rather, all we have is a bunch of allegations from hypocrital barking moonbats (redundant), many of whom it is turning out committed the exact things that they allege DeLay did. Or are you just applying moonbat "logic": Bush, Rove, DeLay et al. are evil, therefore all allegations against them are true until proven otherwise, then they're still "accurate" (as in "fake but accurate")?

Republicans have dredged up un unfortunate chapter of my life and, clearly, are about to announce it to the world.

Plagiarism isn't an "unfortunate chapter" in the life of someone who wants to argue as a credible witness to another person's character or behavior.

Plagiarism is much like perjury. Nothing she says should be accepted, especially considering her agenda in this matter.

Also, she creates a list of excuses for the plagiarism and then says there was no excuse for what she did. Why did she list the excuses if there are no excuses for her actions? Clearly, she wants the excuses to stand as excuses.

Then she tries to turn the real guilt onto the Republicans (as if she's not as guilty for plagiarizing as THEY are guilty for bringing it up.)

This bozon knew exactly what she was doing when she plagiarized. She was "under pressure" so she STOLE from someone else and got caught doing it (rather than simply tell the school paper that she couldn't make the deadline.)

---

Committing plagiarism is NOT like drinking too much as a young person (college student.) Plagiarism is the THEFT of intellectual property.

I've written many papers in my time as a student (as an undergrad and graduate student.)

It's no secret to any serious student that you have to attribute ALL intellectual material that you use (with footnotes) and that if you use the source's exact words, you must use QUOTES along with footnotes for such sections.

My practice was to use quotes for the author's words within my own sentence with the person's name listed as part of the sentence, or else to indent if I was providing another person's paragraph. In this case, I would state the person's name prior to the indent. Footnotes were included at the end of whatever material was quoted directly. If I was describing someone else's ideas, I would mention their name in the text AND in footnotes.

If it was a more general source like a reference book, I would use footnotes at whatever point the reference material stopped and my own ideas started again. I made sure that every single word in the paper that was not my direct idea or conclusion was accounted for in footnotes. It was an absolute requirement.

Every paper or article that you write must be able to stand alongside the original sources in a way that makes it clear that you gave every source the appropriate amount of credit for every idea and word that you offered as part of your own work (even if it means you have to use 100 footnotes.)

It's a tough process to do this, but it's an absolute necessity if you want to remain a student and finish the degree program.

Not true. People are talking about peak oil, inlcuding experts who appear in the documentary End of Suburbia.

You want a real irony? It looks like OIL might be a self-renewing energy resource:

[Link: www.worldnetdaily.com...]

An interesting couple of quotes from the piece:

An intriguing theory now permeating oil company research staffs suggests that crude oil may actually be a natural inorganic product, not a stepchild of unfathomable time and organic degradation. The theory suggests there may be huge, yet-to-be-discovered reserves of oil at depths that dwarf current world estimates.
Even more intriguing is evidence that several oil reservoirs around the globe are refilling themselves, such as the Eugene Island reservoir – not from the sides, as would be expected from cocurrent organic reservoirs, but from the bottom up.

In other words, if you want renewable and sustainable energy, DIG AN OIL WELL!

More than one "fuckup" here that I can count -based on this letter. If she were completely honest, she would lay out all the details of her accusations so that her audience could "honestly" judge her transgressions. Splodey Toads in Hamburg!

"An outbreak of exploding toads is perplexing the residents of Hamburg. The affected creatures seem to behave quite normally, croaking and languidly snapping up flies. Suddenly, after nightfall, they start to balloon to more than three times their normal size and can barely crawl before popping. Their entrails are expelled distances of up to one metre...

“The worst thing is that they’re not dead immediately. They have to fight for their lives for minutes on end despite the fact that their entrails have been shot across the park.”

Other explanations are a virus or a new breed of aggressive crows. The birds have been seen attacking toads and one theory is that the toads swell up as a defence mechanism which then gets out of control. Senator Kennedy reflects on Abu Graibn on the one year anniversery:

The sad anniversary of the Abu Ghraib torture scandal is now upon us. It's an appropriate time to reflect on how well we've responded as a nation.

The images of cruelty, and perversion are still difficult to look at a year later. An Iraqi prisoner in a dark hood and cape, standing on a cardboard box with electrodes attached to his body. Naked men forced to simulate sex acts on each other. The corpse of a man who had been beaten to death, lying in ice, next to soldiers smiling and giving a "thumbs up" sign. A pool of blood from the wounds of a naked, defenseless prisoner attacked by a military dog.

Disclaimer: I don't know this website nor the poster of this comment and I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this but it appears to be rather specific in details from someone familiar with her work history with US AID:

The truth is that Melody Townsel is the unstable person here. She was not liked by her comrades in Kyrgistan who she made disparaging comments. She hired her friends for two week stints so she could visit with them while she was in remote Bishkek. In Bishkek all funds had to be handled in cash... see no banks with automatic tellers were there. So huge amounts of money were kept within the office safe. It was under her management that a large sum of money ($40,000) went missing from the safe. This U.S. financed project never located the missing money. Now the question is, did Bolton chase her down the halls because his company's money went missing, or did the money go missing during Bolton's visit? There is more to this story than meets the eye... but one thing is certain, Ms. Townsel is not a stable person.

A question to ask:

“Why do we bother to have extraordinarily expensive, high-profile investigative panels like the 9/11 Commission and the Silberman-Robb Commission if we are going to get hysterical over episodes that actually confirm their findings? The 9/11 Commission said the intelligence community failed the nation prior to the attacks because of risk-aversion and groupthink …Bolton was doing precisely what policymakers ought to be doing. For that, his critics would hold him unfit. What does that say about his critics? And what, more critically, does it say about the prospects of improving the performance of American intelligence if, when dysfunction is pitted against challenge, dysfunction wins.”

No idea about EI 330, but I don't think it proves non-biogenic generation of oil.

I'm sure that below the Tertiary formations out there, there is probably deeper source and reservoir rock (like the Cretacous limes that come close enough to the surface to be drilled in the Viosca Knoll), and partial depletion of the shallower reservoir could reactivate dormant faults and allow fluid migration from deeper, higher pressured reservoirs to shallower reservoirs.

Now some people think the Chambliss bill deals with the issue more comprehensively and the US Farm Bureaus at the state levels seem to be supporting it. But the Senators you refer to as RINOs had good reasons to vote the way they did based on their individual constuencies. And as surprising as Feinstein's vote was to me, I can understand that she could have sincere, honorable reasons for it.

Sean II,

"Senator Kennedy reflects on Abu Graibn on the one year anniversery"

That should read, "Senator Kennedy OBSESSES about Abu Graibn (sic) on the one year anniversery (sic)"

Since the good Senator is in a mood to dredge up history, too bad he doesn't publicly lament about Mary Jo Kopechne mor often. Here he is whining about humiliating Islamofascists and this guy is responsible for the death of a gal friend/intern. And I thought Kennedy's complaints about "waterboard torture" during the Abu Ghraib hearings was particularly egregious given his own history of drowning drunken women. What's said is the official story that Mary Jo may have still be alive in an air pocket from 45 minutes to a couple of hours after the accident. Too bad the slimeball fled the scene and didn't report the accident until many hours later.

Ted Kennedy's Oldsmobile has killed more people than my Glock 21 .45 ACP.

BTW, would maybe it would have been more palatable to the anti-war left if the Abu Ghraib prisoners where stripped (which all prisoners are, I don't give a damn if this "shocks" Islamofascist sensibilities) stacked in pyramids and then plowed into the ground by an M-1 Abrams tank. Given how little angst the left has demonstrated with respect to Islamofascists beheadings and the murderous atrocities Saddam visited upon Iraqis in the very same prison, one almost thinks so. How sick is it for leftists to actual celebrate the one year anniversary of Abu Ghraib. Think about it.

Oh, and this automatic disclaimer when interacting with liberals on this topic: What happened at Abu Ghraib was unfortunate and in some cases indefensible and those who are responsible should and will be punished under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

I'm not a geologist, (Ed? Ed, are you there?) but I'd go easy on the Eugene Reservoir bit. Oil is coming in from the bottom thru a fault. I don't see anything that changes the old-time geology paradigm.

THEY DO, and it was in the article:

The theory is simple: Crude oil forms as a natural inorganic process which occurs between the mantle and the crust, somewhere between 5 and 20 miles deep. The proposed mechanism is as follows:

This is NOT the only place I've read about this phenomena. The people in the oil biz are really looking at whether their assumptions about the source of oil have been wrong all along. Another theory is that there is a large -- and I mean HUGE -- biomass very deep underground the is generating this stuff.

Also, it's not just the Eugene Reservoir. After that incident, they started looking at other "depleted" wells and found many that had somehow become "un-depleted." (No link handy, sorry.)

Oil is coming in from the bottom thru a fault.

Interesting site you linked to there. Guerilla News Network?

Anyway, it looks as though much of the information in the article was originally published in the MSM as an article by Christopher Cooper in the April, 1999 WSJ. The interesting part of Cooper's article (where its more prominent than in the GNN article,) is that the oil coming in through the fault is from a different geological era than the originally pumped oil.

Does it have earth-changing effects on the current theoretical origin of petroleum? Mebbe.

Its odd how a theory can be widely accepted and become the "conventional wisdom." A good example is the theory that CFCs damage the ozone layer in the stratosphere (leading to the Montreal Protocol of 1976.) A simple thought experiment makes me wonder though, if maybe its not nearly as complex a process as its made out to be. The atomic weight of the lightest of the CFCs is 129 (IIRC...it may be 126.) The atomic weight of oxygen is 16. Now how is it that ozone, atomic weight 48 (3 atoms of oxygen per molecule,) is a ground pollutant; but CFCs are stratospheric pollutants?

Somehow, I do not think we know as much as we think know.

Some good news in Florida for a change? I should probably post this on the other thread too.

Fla. Gun Law to Expand Leeway for Self-Defense

The Florida measure says any person "has the right to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force if he or she reasonably believes it is necessary to do so to prevent death or great bodily harm."

Florida law already lets residents defend themselves against attackers if they can prove they could not have escaped. The new law would allow them to use deadly force even if they could have fled and says that prosecutors must automatically presume that would-be victims feared for their lives if attacked.

The naysayers:

Critics argue that the measure is so broad it will encourage fights between neighbors, parents at soccer games or drinking buddies to escalate into gunfights.

"It's almost like a duel clause," said state Rep. Dan Gelber, a Miami Beach Democrat and former federal prosecutor whose wife is a state prosecutor. "People ought to have to walk away if they can."

How about thugs ought to stay out and off of other peoples property? How about thieves should be scared for their lives instead of the other way around?

I need to email the NRA and ask them to print up signs for gun owners: "Thieves and Thugs enter at your own peril, Homeowner is a member of the NRA. Liberal wuss lives three houses down."

432 jrdroll  Tue, Apr 26, 2005 10:16:29am

O(il)T

Oil as a renewable resource?
Scientific orthodoxy holds that petroleum is the result of many millions of years of hard rock pressure on the remains of decayed dinosaurs and other organic material. But in the 1950s, some renegade Russian scientists developed an “abiotic” theory that suggested oil is inorganic and has no dead animal or plant origins. The theory, elaborated upon and popularized by the late Cornell University astronomy professor Thomas Gold in scientific papers and his intriguing book, “The Deep Hot Biosphere,” proposes that crude oil forms in a set of natural and ongoing geologic interactions five to 15 miles below Earth’s surface.

The theory holds that methane-based gases rise from the mantle and then condense into heavy hydrocarbons as they hit high temperature zones near the crust. This methane dew, according to the theory, is what we call crude oil; meanwhile, methane-based gas that escapes the condensation process and rises through rock fissures into big gaps above are what we call natural gas. In tectonically stable zones, the theory suggests that crude oil sits calmly in reservoirs. In areas of more tectonic movement, the oil and gas oxidize and escape through volcanoes as carbon dioxide and steam. In some places, the pools of hydrocarbons seep to the surface to create the vast oil sand deposits of Canada and Venezuela. From time to time, the theory proposes, this deep oil surfaces to refill reservoirs of oil thought to be previously depleted.

No, but it certainly points to the possibility, as do other instances of played out oil wells becoming productive again. There are also supposedly other factors that point in this direction, for example certain aspects of the chemical composition of oil at different depths. Now, I'm not a geologist (science background is more in engineering and qm), but I haven't see anything that disproves the possibility, and it certainly is intriguing! Seriously, can you imagine what the moonbats and greens will do if it turns out that oil really is a self-renewing resource?

Is that the way this plagiarism shit works...simplistically of course, but then with just those three mentioned, you are dealing with 'simplistic' people, that LOVE complicating things.

Simple minded people that complicate things, must plagiarize. For how else could they do anything?

Except that the abuse at Abu Graihb was a long time done and already under Army investigation before anybody in the MSM started complaining about it. Senator Kennedy (who I would not call a murderer, but who I would probably convict of vehicular manslaughter) didn't get interested in the story until he was able to look at the pictures that probably reminded him of a typical Kennedy compound weekend.

A simple thought experiment makes me wonder though, if maybe its not nearly as complex a process as its made out to be.

I don't know if this accurately answers your question, but it's my understanding that there are two substances referred to as ozone. They are used interchangeably by the same title, but they are composed of completely different materials.

There is low atmospheric or "ground" ozone, which we often hear in relation to the weather("Today's ozone levels are high, so those with lung or heart conditions are adviced to stay indoors.")

Then there is the high atmospheric ozone or "ozone" layer, made up of various gases that filter out certain solar radiation. I believe that's the ozone referred to with CFC's and global warming.

From Powerline:

"Bolton "has all the qualities needed to harm the image and objectives in the U.N. and its affiliated international organizations. If it is now U.S. policy not to reform the U.N but to destroy it, Bolton is our man," Frederick Vreeland, a former U.S. ambassador to Morocco, said in an e-mail to the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee."

That's one of the main problems with Leftists. Why in the world does OUR Ambo to the Yoo Enn have to be LOYAL to the YOO-Enn?

He's OUR goddanged Ambo...not theirs.

And if it is our policy for Bolton to stand outside Kofi Annan's office and shout obscemities at him in umpteen languages with a bullhorn for eight hours a day, then Bolton either starts shoutin' or submits his resignation.

Florida law already lets residents defend themselves against attackers if they can prove they could not have escaped.

I've mentioned this here in the past, but if you own a firearm, the you should be aware of the Tueller Drill. People are often surprised at what really constitutes a margin of safety, and its also important to be aware of it simply because of its utility in lawsuits in places like Florida that (used) to impose a very difficult to reach standard for the use of lethal force.

The Germans are at it again:

HEIDELBERG, Germany - A German anatomist whose exhibit of preserved corpses sparked international controversy received reduced fines Tuesday by a German administrative court for illegally using the title "professor."

The Heidelberg administrative court found Gunther von Hagens guilty of misusing the title in four instances by not making it clear that it was earned in China, not Germany. He was fined $140,000.

Von Hagens was challenging an earlier ruling in which a lower Heidelberg court fined him $187,142 for the offense.

Although the fine was lessened, von Hagens said he felt he was being unjustly punished.

"I believe I am innocent," he said.

The anatomist's title was awarded by the Dalian Medical University in China. The complaint was originally filed by Heidelberg University, where he worked between 1974 and 1996.

The university argued that he wrongfully gave the impression that he had a German professor's title, which requires a postdoctoral thesis.

[Link: www.phillyburbs.com...]

Why the hell should the government care what this guy calls himself?!?
It's up to anyone who deals with this guy to find out where he obtained his title.

If only these German law enforcement idiots spent half the time and effort on dealing with terrorists.

Go to the comments page. You aren't alone.

Either this is a cruel prank being played on this guy, or he is a certifiable nut. If you look at the other sites, he ranges from being a troop hater "Screw 'em, if they get killed they deserved it" to recommending a variety of Laura Ingalls Wilder commemorative sites (Little House on the Prairie).

Between bashing troops, spitting on Mormons, coming out of the closet, and fawning over Laura Ingalls Wilder, he's a busy little bee in the twisted head of his.

Or he's being thoroughly slandered.

Actually, there's no question in my mind. And ozone is ozone: A molecule composed of three atoms of oxygen.

The difficulty that I have with the theory is the transport mechanism: how exactly is a molecule nine times as heavy as 79% of the atmosphere (nitrogen) and eight times as heavy as the next 20% of the atmosphere (oxygen) going to climb from my kitchen (34 ft ASL) to 30 miles into the sky? Those CFC molecules got little rocket engines on 'em?

The ozone depletion theory is a set of complex chemical reactions posited to occur at the ozone layer (in the upper stratosphere) and I don't have a problem accepting that complex chemical reactions can occur in an irradiated environment. Its just that I have a hard time believing that a CFC is going to make it 30 miles up from an aerosol can: the spray doesn't come out that fast! (Remember that ozone is an oxygen molecule and 20% of the atmosphere is oxygen-a relatively simple reaction in the presence of external energy explains the presence of the ozone layer, and there are more complex compounds also present in that layer. I just don't believe that they came from an aerosol can or old refridgerator.

And besides, which way do stray gas fumes go at the pump? Down. (And yes, they are slightly heavier than CFCs.)

But very good news

Academics' boycott draws protests in UK

I like this comment particularly

John Vail, lecturer in political economy at Newcastle University, wrote in an e-mail to fellow academics: "The boycott is blatantly discriminatory and reeks of double standards." He added: "Although I have no current research links with Israeli academics, this has made me want to go out and develop some just so as to show my disapproval of this motion. I hope that our local branch will pass a motion that expresses our disagreement with the national policy."

And this one is very good too

The letter, which registered alarm at the "double standards and hypocrisy" behind the resolution, asked: "Will the tests and the boycott apply to Israeli Arab academics or only Jews?" The letter's signatories are based in a variety of British universities, and include the Institute's chairman Prof. Peter Pulzer, and Dr. David Rechter, both of whom lecture at Oxford University.

Woo HOO!

Dear Folks,

Today the Texas State House is hearing a bill that could make a difference in Democracy in our state. House Bill 1721 will allow people who vote in a major party primary to sign petitions to put Independent candidates on the ballot.

If you agree that more options for voters is a great thing for the great state of Texas, please email your state rep. and let them know you support HB 1721.

Click here to look up your state representative online: [Link: www.capitol.state.tx.us...]

And then click here to send your rep an email: [Link: www.house.state.tx.us...]

As you know, the Kinkster supports any initiative that will help guarantee all Texans the freedom to run for office without having to play ball with the two-party system.

Thanks for your Texas patriotism,

Kinky

Another ex-colleague criticizes Bolton
By LIZ SIDOTI Apr 26, 8:12 AM EDT
Associated Press Writer
[Link: hosted.ap.org...]
"Bolton has none of the qualities needed for that job," Frederick Vreeland, a former U.S. ambassador to Morocco, said in an e-mail to the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. "On the contrary, he has all the qualities needed to harm the image and objectives in the U.N. and its affiliated international organizations. If it is now U.S. policy not to reform the U.N but to destroy it, Bolton is our man."
Vreeland, who worked with Bolton in the early 1990s under the first President Bush, said Bolton "dealt with visitors to his office as if they were servants with whom he could be dismissive, curt and negative."

Um, if the composition of the atmosphere was strictly due to density segregation, than the atmosphere would be pretty heterogenous, with the heavier gases as the bottom, and the lighter onces up top.

Of course, if we didn't have rising air parcels, we wouldn't have clouds. And water evaporated off the surface of the oceans can wind up as cirrus outflow 10 km high just hours later. The fact that wind gusts, and doesn't blow at a steeady rate, also indicates turbulent mixing of the atmosphere.

And, your average toilet will rotate clockwise or counterclockwise based on the design of the toilet, not the hemisphere you live in, because the affects of the Coriolis Affect are extremely minute over a system as small as a toilet.

But they are still on 'war' footing, acting like the election is just around the corner. The Dems in the Senate have managed to control the agenda.

It's like the majority (Red-Staters!) fell back asleep and aren't paying attention.

Don't think it is all over on that side of the ocean. 25+ years ago I received a BS in Chemical Engineering. I have spent the last 25 years designing, starting up and operating gas plants.

In the State of Texas, I cannot call myself an "engineer". My title describes me as a member of the process department.

You must have a professional license to call yourself an engineer.

What are the conditions for obtaining a license? In the early 90s I could have proven I had worked under a professional engineer for 5 years, and that was all it took. What did it mean to me? Nothing, so I didn't do it. Now you must pay a fee and pass a test.

The bottom line is to get a restricted, licensed, occupation (think doctors), and then prices will go up and we will all get rich.

I was thinking earlier of the Arab hunger strike in Israeli prisons.

The Israelis scheduled barbeques to try to help the prisoners decide they'd rather eat than strike.

Some were calling it TORTURE at the time.

I couldn't believe it. Fixing large amounts of good food during a hunger strike was supposed to be mean.

My favorite image from this hunger strike was the one of Barghouti wolfing down a plateful of food that the Israelis left outside his cell without saying a word. He put up newspapers on his cell bars for some privacy, then stuffed his face during the hunger strike.

I love it that Israel had hidden cameras to catch it. :)

These prisoners end up fat when they leave Israeli prisons. No wonder some Arab kids are making a point of getting arrested.

As you allude to, by imposing such idiotic rules, the government is conferring something akin to proprietary rights to certain people without them having to work for it.

What gets me about the present case is that the German government is making a value judgment as to the quality of a certain university.

We had a B-52 flyover a week and a half ago at the Nextel Cup Race at Texas Motor Speedway.

That is a big airplane. Those engines are smoky, as well. Which I suspect isn't a good thing, to leave a long trail of oily smoke behind when you are trying to penetrate Russian territory to drop bombs.

But for high altitude missions over Iran, with USN and USAF aircraft flying electronic countermeasures and air defens esuppression, they would be a most awesome way to bomb the Mullahs back from the Stone Age (where they live now) back to the age before fire and toilet paper.

Good question. Only problem is, they have that handy-dandy double standard that allows them to pillory any conservative for the same thoughts and behaviors they engage in (the same double standard the MSM employs to blast conservatives while ignoring liberals for the same thoughs/behaviors). Recent example: Sen. Dick Durban (Durgan?) of Illinois (I believe) joking that Lincoln was Jewish because his name was Abraham and he was shot it the temple. Can you imagine the firestorm and calls for reprimands/resignation had Repub made that joke?

Can you imagine the firestorm and calls for reprimands/resignation had Repub made that joke?

Yep, another good example of the double standard.

Perhaps another drubbing in the 06 election cycle will teach them something of the level of angst by the majority of American's over the BS and double standard? Probably not though, they haven't learned from 1994, 2000, 2002, and or 2004.

Now we know how important the top cover that the MSM bias provides is to their efforts...

Sorry, but if she lied years ago about whether she wrote something or not...on several occasions, it appears, who can say now whether she's lying about what happened in Moscow? Maybe Bolton got so fed up with her b.s. he chased her down a hotel corridor in Moscow screaming at her because she deserved it! I'm inclined to discount any testimony at all from her. First all she's a Democratic 'activist' which is reason to wonder how much of the story is true and how much exaggeration; but now here's proof from her own lips she's lied before--several times! When it mattered!

Sorry for the late response, but I posted then had meetings all day...

My point is not that I won't enjoy comics (or any artform) because the artist/writer is liberal. It is when they insert their LLL message into their work that I am turned off, because it speaks volumes about their ignorance.

I remember saying to my colleague jokingly about Judd Winick on his first regular issue of Batman, "I wonder who he is going to turn gay in this book." And sure enough, not 4 pages into the story, Robin is wearing a dress. The point is that I do not want to support a writer that adds such a drastic change to a character after decades of different characterization.

But I would feel the same way (maybe even moreso) if a writer suddenly discarded years of characterization, and had Superman kill a person.

It isn't that extreme as you describe, and it certainly is fine to hear different viewpoints, but when the themes are the same (Bush lied/people died, Halliburton, no blood for oil), I can find other ways to be entertained.

So the anti-Bolton attacker Frederick Vreeland turns out to be an anti-Israel State Department terrorist sympathizer who views the terrorist bombings in Morocco as "collateral damage" from America's anti-terrorist efforts. And Bolton's attacker Frederick Vreeland, while discussing terrorism in Morocco, thinks that the most important thing is to sell out Israel. And Bolton's attacker Frederick Vreeland endorses a "right of return" for millions of Arabs who were not born in Israel -- a "right" which would mean the death of Israel as a Jewish state.

The reason that the terrorist-appeaser Frederick Vreeland opposes Bolton is that Bolton has the good sense and the ethical strength not to buy the idea of seeking to sell out Israel to try to appease the terrorists.

With this appeasement creep Frederick Vreeland opposed to Bolton, it is another reason for me to be solidly behind the appointment of John Bolton.

I think "when" is a very important thing, but "what the f*ck!" is also a very important thing to ask. Just keep asking "what the f*ck?" I mean, why the f*ck bother? See what i mean?
