NADER'S HOUSE OF HORRORS

...Ralph Nader says an architectural firm is now "putting final touches on the plans" for his dream of a lifetime: a museum in his hometown of Winsted, Conn.

...

It will be — yes — a celebration of tort law.
You know, like the case that won $2.9 million for the woman who spilled a hot cup of McDonald's coffee in her lap.
Or the fellow who convinced a jury he deserved $3.6 million when he got falling-down drunk and lost an arm to an oncoming subway train.

Gee, I'd love to visit later this summer, but I can either take a vacation or pay my auto insurance bill.

It's a Hamlet-cloud.

Hamlet: Do you see that cloud, that's almost in shape like a camel?
Polonius: By the mass, and 't is like a camel, indeed.
Hamlet: Methinks, it is like a weasel.
Polonius: It is backed like a weasel.
Hamlet: Or, like a whale?
Polonius: Very like a whale.

Trouble in the magic kingdom.

...What happens after Fahd's death is of concern. Should Abdullah become king, as only a half-brother of the Sudairi Seven, the powerful brothers might see it as a loosening of their control over their power base.
The Sudairis come from the same mother, Hassa bint Ahmad al-Sudairi, and are: Fahd bin Abd al-Aziz, the king and prime minister; Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz, second vice minister and minister of defense and aviation; Abd al-Rahmam bin Abd al-Aziz, vice minister of defense; Na'if bin Abd al-Aziz, interior minister; Ahmad bin Abd al-Aziz, interior vice minister ; Salman bin Abd al-Aziz, governor of Riyadh; and Turki bin Abd al-Aziz. Together, they form the most powerful alliance in the kingdom.
Abdullah is "only" a half-brother to the Sudairi Seven. His mother was al-Fadha bint Asi al-Shuraim.
Saudi analysts believe Abdullah "will find it impossible to wrest the throne away from the Sudairis, who many feel want to maintain power" within their branch of the family.
According to the Saudi Institute, the struggle between the Sudairis and Abdullah, if one were to occur, "would pose a greater threat to the regime than the violence the government faced from Islamist militants" last summer. That remains to be seen. But it is clear the death of the king of Saudi Arabia will, if nothing else, affect the region's markets. ...

Amnesty is on their horse defending their "gulag" report, not only in public statments but through letters to the editor Khan wrote a letter to WaPo while Exec. Direcotr Shultz wrote a letter to the NYTimes
Khan whiney tone and this statment takes the cake though:

To the more than 70,000 prisoners -- none yet tried, many tortured or ill-treated, enduring years of detention and interrogation…

You know that this guy lives in an alternate universe and there's no sense in wasting any more of your life reading his drivel when you get about right here:

The right never likes the media accurately reporting information that may make America look bad, while the left encourages... actual journalism of both the positive and negative varieties. That's sort of the dividing line between the two ideologies nowadays.

That pic says plenty about the death cult, but the caption says a lot about Reuters.

The U.S. military has identified five incidents of 'mishandling of a Koran' by U.S. personnel at Guantanamo Bay, but found no credible evidence that the Muslim holy book had been flushed down a toilet, the commander of the prison said on Thursday.

The thing is that they found the Kookyran did get a swirly, from a muslim activist. Because it wasn't done by an American, it did not happen. If an American had done it, and even if they hadn't, it should be reported that we did do it because we had not yet proved that we hadn't done it. These are the same rules that Amnesty International uses to detect huge networks of labor/torture camps.

I want a "Jihadis Flushed Koran" headline. Reuters will never give it to me. Neither will WaPo, NYT, CBS, etc...

I can't wait for a new media outlet with a fresh , factual take.

To go along with the 70,000 tortured, untried prisoners, here's a news flash:

housands of US soldiers desert rather than fight or die for Bush in Iraq

The Irish government are complicit in the deaths of these U.S. soldiers, not to mention the 100,000 or so Iraqis the troops have slaughtered. In 2004 more than 158,000 US Troops flew through Shannon Airport, most on their way to Iraq. During much of that same period of time approximately 5,500 US Troops have deserted, gone into hiding, been sent to jail and some have escaped to Canada. Another 1,700 have deserted their posts in Iraq itself.

#81 'Nam Grunt -

Heh heh - Apparently, the MSM missed this one. So has the Pentagon.

Here's a killer.
The Northeastern Federation of Anarcho-Communists in their "struggle for a classless, stateless, non-hierarchical society" has this narrative posted as their latest action item:

First action, first victory for the Workers Solidarity Network!

Montreal. May 16th 2005 -- Last Friday, the new Workers Solidarity Network organised and won its first workplace action. Approximately 40 people showed up at Double Pizza, a restaurant located on the corner of St-Denis and Ontario streets to demand money that hadn't been paid to a former employee.
The employee, an immigrant worker, led the action. When arriving, he asked to speak with the boss, who showed up a few minutes later to adress the situation. After the grievance was explained and 60$ was demanded, it took only a few seconds for the boss to rush to the cash register and gather the money! That was about his only choice, as the restaurant was filled with members of the Solidarity Network and pizza sales were halted.
In a burst of joy we left the pizzeria shouting "so-so-so, solidarité!". We promised to return if other cases of abuse of employees were to happen. Interestingly, the lawyer who defended Le Monde has a very Jewish surname - Cohen. We Jews are so often our own worst enemies.

Oh...er..why I accessed Ha'aretz in the first place (I usually don't go anywhere near it but the Jerusalem Post is in online difficulties) was to see if there'd been any score in the Israel vs Ireland Soccer World Cup qualifier. Ireland is one up from a free kick after 6 minutes.

Re: Vaccine-A by Gary Matsumoto

Dear Ms. Clarke:

Just checking to see if there is anything new on the DOD anthrax vaccine issue. As you may remember this is the subject of the book I gave you, Vaccine A.

Since we last talked, the federal court that enjoined the DOD from further use of this vaccine, reached an agreement with the DOD. The DOD may continue to use this vaccine on a voluntary basis as long as they don't coerce military personnel to take it.

This is a partial victory but doesn't address the real underlying issues. Why the big need for the vaccine in the first place? In my last email I outlined my opinion that this was a red herring to cover something else e.g. clinical research trials on vaccine adjuvant squalene using military personnel as test subjects without their informed consent or knowledge. By doing so, avoiding potential liability issues normally encountered with clinical trials. This was done to speed development and beat competitors to market with a new product of potential great economic worth.

All I can say is it's about time. The Sauds are not our friends in the GWOT. See my comments in the thread on the health of King Fahd over at Roger L. Simon's. The question was, "Will this hasten change in Saudi Arabia?"

***

NOPE!

Not until we have a, "Come to Jesus Meeting with the House of Saud." They made a deal with the Devil (The Whabies) to remain in power. In exchange the House of Saud has spent billions exporting this ideology of hate, murder, and torture - Islamofascism.

They have funded and supported the spread of the radical madrassas around the world. These factories churn out new recruits faster than we can eliminate them. This is no religion as we know it.

Can anyone explain the phenomenon of the New York Jewish Democrat? Why would any jew support the same leftists who snicker behind their backs and support the jew-haters?

Any New Yorkers out there? Remember David Dinkins? After the horrific liberal reign of Koch, idiotic New Yorkers elected a retarded racist anti-semite (David Dinkins, that is). Jews overwhelmingly supported him despite his ties to jew haters like Al Sharpton. Dinkins let crime soar and allowed pogroms in Brooklyn (all PREDICTABLE events). Surely jews knew the potential dangers of supporting someone like Dinkins.

Voting in leftist anti-semitic loonies not only endangers jews -- it also infuriates hard working people tring to live in peace without having to worry about wilding thugs and psychotic panhandlers. U.S. CHANGES POLICY IN PLEDGE ON 1949 LINES

The Bush administration appears to have revised U.S. policy on the Arab-Israeli conflict.

A report by the Washington Institute said the administration's adoption of the 1949 armstice lines as the recommended borders of Israel could mark a major change in U.S. policy. The report said President George Bush appears to have abandoned U.S. support of United Nations Security Council resolution 242, which called for secure borders for Israel.

"Bush specifically committed the United States to a certain final-status position: the 1949 armistice lines are the starting point, from which any change must be mutually agreed," the report, authored by executive director Robert Satloff, said. "This is a huge advance for the Palestinians."

Go,Rummy, go! Rumsfeld: Al-Jazeera promotes terrorism

Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld said Saturday the Al-Jazeera television network promoted terrorism by airing beheadings and other attacks.

"If anyone here lived in the Middle East and watched a network like Al-Jazeera day after day after day, even if you were an American you would begin to believe that America was bad," Rumsfeld told an Asian defense conference.

"Quite honestly, I do not get up in the morning and think that America is what's wrong with the world. The people that are going on television, chopping off people's heads is what's wrong with the world.

"And television networks that carry it and promote it and are Johnny-on-the-spot every time there's a terrorist act are promoting it," he said.

Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, a pan-Arab station, denies it holds any anti-American bias and says it reports the news objectively.

Was there a camera rolling when that was said?

#134 KarmiCommunist - from your link:

" For the first time since controversy erupted over a claim by Amnesty International that the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay is a "gulag," a senior official from that organization is backing away from the charge.

Challenged over use of the incendiary term, Josh Rubenstein, Northeast Regional Director of Amnesty International, called the comparison between Soviet-style death camps and the U.S. facility in Cuba "overheated rhetoric."

Mr. Rubenstein's decision to back away from the gulag comparison stands in marked contrast to comments from Kate Gilmore, Amnesty's deputy secretary general, who defended Khan's remarks on Saturday.

"The issue of the gulag is about policies and practices," she told the New York Times, saying procedures at Guantanamo are "a breach of the Geneva Convention."

Gilmore boasted that the gulag flap had helped publicize Amnesty's findings, explaining, "We're getting more airing of our message than we would have otherwise."

Got it ok, Ms. Gilmore. The end justifies the means. What a novel concept. How did such a morally and intellectually bankrupt person (and her comrade in arms, Ms. Kahn) EVER rise to positions of power in AI?
That is, of course, a rhetorical question.

In other news, an old

Hi,

With all due respect to Human Rights Watch and such similar organizations; we find the timing of the report about abuses by the Iraqi security forces against captured terrorist suspects, highly suspicious coming at this particular time. Of course, all acts of brutality against innocents are highly reprehensible and quite unacceptable; however, if it is certain that the suspects in question are some of the be-headers, mass murderers and perpetrators of the daily atrocities and flagrant aggression against a whole people, they deserve to be skinned alive. Moreover, really, to ask for perfect behavior of the security forces in the present circumstances, is like asking for immaculate English eating manners and bow ties at a cannibal feast in the heart of the jungle.

In fact, most of the recent successes in capturing and rounding up terrorists can be attributed to the toughening of interrogation methods used by the Iraqi security forces. That; unfortunately, is the grim reality of the situation. It is a dilemma difficult to resolve.

According to this...

Spain's prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero faces the first major demonstration against him today when tens of thousands are to march through Madrid demanding he does not negotiate with the Basque terrorist group Eta.

Organisers said at least 200 coaches were due for the march, which has the backing of the main conservative opposition, the People's party.

The march comes more than a year after Mr Zapatero's Socialist party formed a government and a month after the Spanish parliament gave him the go ahead to open talks with Eta if it shows a "clear will" to renounce violence.

"Do not negotiate in my name," is the slogan of a march that was also expected to attract dissident sectors of Mr Zapatero's own party.

The marchers, to be led by relatives of some of the 800 people killed by Eta over the past three decades, will go from the site of one Eta bomb attack in Madrid to another.

Organisers claimed it was not a protest against Mr Zapatero but against any attempt to talk to Eta - a group going through the weakest period of its 30 year history after failing to cause any deaths for two years.

"We want to demonstrate against a policy that we believe is humiliating for the victims of terrorism," explained José Alcaraz, president of the Association of Terrorism Victims.

"I could not live in a place where those who represent me are striking deals with those who nearly killed me," said Irene Villa, who lost both legs in an Eta bomb blast a dozen years ago when she was 12.

But with the People's party throwing its weight behind the demonstration, and the Socialists and their allies calling on their own people to stay away, the march is being measured as a protest against Mr Zapatero.

...Spain is trying to regain its dignity.

This is fairly consistent with 0Z UK MET Office Global model. The 0Z Canadian Global showed an actual tropical cyclone in the Bahamas Thursday heading toward Florida. For some reason, Environment Canada only runs the 12Z run of the model to 72 hours. Not sure why. Annoying, however.

Re the Lx3 aclu? Concerns Arise at A.C.L.U. Over Document Shredding

The American Civil Liberties Union has been shredding some documents over the repeated objections of its records manager and in conflict with its longstanding policies on the preservation and disposal of records.

The matter has fueled a dispute at the organization over internal operations, one of several such debates over the last couple of years, and has reignited questions over whether the A.C.L.U.'s own practices are consistent with its public positions.

The organization has generally advocated for strong policies on record retention and benefited from them, most recently obtaining and publicizing documents from the government about prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

The debate over the use of shredders is reminiscent of one late last year over the organization's efforts to collect a wide variety of data on its donors, even as it criticizes corporations and government agencies for accumulating personal data as a violation of privacy rights.

Janet Linde, who oversaw the A.C.L.U.'s archives for over a decade until she resigned last month, raised concerns in e-mail messages and memorandums for over two years that officials' use of shredders in their offices made a mockery of the organization's policy to supervise document destruction and created potential legal risks.

"It has been shown in many legal cases over the years, including the Enron case, that if a company has an established and documented shredding program they will not be liable if documents at issue in a lawsuit are found to have been destroyed," Ms. Linde wrote in a 2003 memo. "If, however, the means for unauthorized shredding is present in the office we cannot say that we have made a good faith effort to monitor and document our records disposal process."

Ms. Linde said she was disturbed that her correspondence had become public and declined to comment further. A spokeswoman for the organization, Emily Whitfield, declined to answer specific questions but made the following statement: "The A.C.L.U.'s records management policies have always been of the highest standards in keeping with, if not more stringent than, those of other nonprofits."

The organization refused to address which documents were being shredded, among other questions...

We don't need GWIII. We can stand back and do enough to bring it down. As it is it will only get more dangerous there.

'Old Europe' tries to close ranks against Britain over EU treaty"

"...The fallout from the two EU referendum "no" votes became a full-blown crisis yesterday after efforts by Germany to reform an alliance among the core members were blocked.

"Amid continuing acrimony after the "no" votes in France and the Netherlands, Germany was heading diplomatic efforts to stop Tony Blair killing off the European constitution in all but name. At the same time Berlin and Paris backed new proposals to freeze, then reduce, the British budget rebate, a plan that could put Mr Blair on the defensive on two fronts..."

I think Abraham Lincoln was the most powerful person in history.
His iron will, profound moral vision, and remarkable eloquence held the United States together in a conflict that could easily have gone the other way.
The results are not only still with us; their influence grows with each passing day as his lineal successor, George W. Bush, roots out slavery, superstition, and oppression in all parts of the world.

Good point. Unfortunately, kids in DoD schools spend a great deal of time on local community / culture studies and that probably influenced their thinking.

Most telling:

Such an outcome was unthinkable when he was a student 18 years ago at Bitburg, Hollenbeck told the class. “Twenty five or thirty years ago, Hitler wouldn’t have been mentioned,” he said.

We all grew up in the heart of tornado alley, and we are all weather watchers and well informed.

But if it's an F4-F5 tornado when it gets to the metro area, the only reasonably safe place is underground, and sometimes that's not easy to do.

I'm worried. May of 99 was a true horror, the most destructive tornado outbreak on record. And ground zero was south and SE of OKC. My family was less than 4 miles from an F5 tornado, more than half a mile wide, that completely destroyed everything in its path. And I mean everything. Bare foundations where houses stood.

Most people ran away or went underground, and the majority that hunkered down in safe zones in foundation homes were spared, but not all. Like what could be the case this time, there was a long warning time, which is common today for the most destructive long-track tornadoes.

Many hundreds, if not more than a thousand people were seriously injured, but it was a true miracle that the entire outbreak only killed 43 people. The most impactful video I've seen of that tornado convinced me that if I'd been in the direct path when that monster came, I wouldn't have been a direct victim, I'd have died of a heart attack before it ever hit me.

Good story.
Heat, dust and the hunt

AL-JAZIRAH DESERT, Iraq – For six months, the cavalrymen of the Stryker brigade had hunted a suspected smuggler and terrorist known as Abu Anwar.

They believe he is one point of a triangle connecting the Iraqi cities of Mosul and Biaj with smugglers across the border in Syria. The smugglers move guns and materials for use in suicide bombings against Iraqi and U.S. forces.

“He’s a guy who trains, recruits and equips foreign fighters,” said Maj. Bryan Denny, the executive officer with the Fort Lewis brigade’s 2nd Squadron, 14th Cavalry Regiment.

But they’ve never been able to nab him in and around Tal Afar, a city of 200,000 where the Cav normally operates.

So this past week the Rattlesnakes, as the 2-14 is known, fanned out across the heart of the Al-Jazirah Desert. It’s where Anwar’s tribesmen dwell in primitive villages and secluded shepherd’s tents.

For six days, the squadron’s 500 scouts trekked beyond their normal boundaries all the way south to the Euphrates River, 185 miles away.

It was here they hoped to find their prey, in a place he might feel most at ease because they’ve seldom pursued him there.

They’d not likely get a better chance to track him across his desert home. After this, the squadron would be moving to Mosul with the rest of the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, for operations in the city of 2 million. ...

275 Lady of Shalott (ylreveb)  Sat, Jun 4, 2005 3:23:29pm

From The Straight Dope:

'What exactly is a "merkin"? Ever since the word was thrust into my consciousness it's been tormenting me. My Oxford English Dictionary defines it as the "female pudendum," which seems a trifle sedate, given the listed quote of 1714, "This put a strange Whim in his Head; which was, to get the hairy circle of her Merkin ... This he dry'd well and comb'd out, and then return'd to the Cardinal, telling him, he had brought Saint Peter's Beard."

'And it's downhill from there. The OED "b" definition says a merkin is a "counterfeit hair for women's privy parts," and another dictionary calls it a "pubic hair wig." I've heard of niche markets, but this is ridiculous. My own interest in the word isn't just academic, as I'd like to make use of the fine quote of 1680, "Or wear some stinking Merkin for a Beard," but I want to make damn sure I know what the original item was. --Andrew Scheinman, Los Angeles'

That's a gherkin, as in:

Main Entry: gher·kin
Pronunciation: 'g&r-k&n
Function: noun
Etymology: Dutch gurken, plural of gurk cucumber, ultimately from Middle Greek agouros
1 : a small prickly fruit used for pickling; also : the slender annual vine (Cucumis anguria) of the gourd family that bears it
2 : the immature fruit of the cucumber

Or:

There once was a fellow named Durkin
Who was fond of jerkin' his gherkin
His father said, "Derkin!
Don't be jerkin' yer gherkin!
Your gherkin's fer ferkin, not jerkin'."

All the weather my family has experienced thus far hasn't been too bad. A little thunder, lightning and wind. Pretty much it's been west of them. Northern OK appears to be getting hit pretty hard, but the biggest storm I've seen in a long time is still SW of their location, and moving much more slowly than the rest of the systems in the state.

That worries me a bit, along with the fact that it isn't a line of connected storminess, but a "string of pearls" of discrete storms, all of them quite severe, and all of them veering eastward from the training direction. That's pretty much a bad sign.

Things could get very ugly as we progress into the evening hours, but my family should be pretty much out of danger within 3 or 3-1/2 hours. It's what happens between now and then that worries me. The storm SW of them is just huge, probably covering over 500 square miles with significant severe weather. If it was multi-vortex earlier - which it was - it could gain strength again. That one storm is moving at about one-third the speed of the others, and is being overtaken by another strong system behind it. Primarily two things can happen if those storms collide: either the trailing one can weaken the one moving more slowly, or the one in front, which is bigger, can rob the energy from the trailing storm, and possibly significantly increase in intensity.

That's the unpredictability of weather. You can never been completely sure of what's going to happen when the conditions are chaotic, like tonight.

A friend of mine (an organist, i kid you not) remarked when we were walking past Merkin Hall,* "I bet they hope no one knows what that means!" I begged her to elucidate, and she did.

As for the reason? well, back in the day, syphilis was Rampant, so to speak, and the treatments made one's hair fall out. Both sexes wore wigs, so adding one more probably seemed logical. Tied around the waist, they were (naturalism being at a pretty low premium).

Oh no, I think I need a drink now:

Pubic wigs or 'body furniture can be custom made and designed to suit the wearer and their moods by tonsorial expert Rick Stonell. Two examples of his work are 'Heart' and Target'. The first is a pale pink heart shaped piece that is made from yak belly hair; the image it projects is one of virginal youth and subtleness. The colour and hair are soft and the shape is traditionally linked with love and romance. The overall look is of innocence, though ironically it is reminiscent of Eve's fig leaf! Alternatively he has created a piece that uses the shape of a target; this is made from red, white and blue nylon. The strong design, colours and fibre used in this wig, carry a bold and sexual statement of availability. The wig has a fantasy element gives the impression that it was designed with a superhero or heroine in mind. The range of pubic wigs in Rick Stonell's collection covers ever aspect of sexuality and personality from 'whore' to 'Madonna'.

On a much higher, though even less relevant, note; I am going to write and post the story of my 1981 engagement to a beautiful Texas teacher named Carolyn.

It is in the nature of a public confession, since I broke the engagement for no reason that I now consider worthwhile. Worse, I did this just 12 days before the scheduled wedding.

"Hell hath no fury..." as they say, and she told me to get lost when I called her a week later in a desperate bid to make up. She told me never to call her again, and I never did. She also said she never wanted to hear my name again and to the best of my knowledge, she hasn't.

Carolyn actually recovered from it pretty quickly by most accounts but it was very hard on her in the meantime. Her sister told me that for days after I welched on her, Carolyn just wandered around her parents' house sobbing and saying, "it wasn't meant to be, it just wasn't meant to be."
I still cringe when I think of that.

I do know that she married someone else a year later and apparently lived happily ever after. At least they are still married at this writing.
I eventually remarried (Carolyn would have been my second wife after a messy divorce from the first). I, too, had a very happy marriage, though I was widowed in 1999; but I do not quite subscribe to the theory that "all's well that ends well."
Fact is, my conduct was cruel, dishonorable and even cowardly; and unintended positive consequences do not mitigate that. It has haunted me off and on ever since, though it has never risen to the level of an obsession.

All this was brought home to me again in 2000 when my older daughter married. At her mother's insistence, this was a giant church wedding in a great old New England cathedral. (My older daughter was the child of my first marriage and was 3 years old at the time of my engagement to Carolyn. Carolyn, who had never been married, loved her very much and wanted to be her stepmother.)

I thought a lot about my cold feet of 19 years earlier during that time, wondering how I might handle it if my future son-in-law followed my disgraceful example and left my beautiful angel standing at the altar.
Fortunately he was made of better stuff than I had been and he showed up. They are the parents of my grandchildren now, a boy and a girl.

I dreamed about Carolyn for years, this only ending when I remarried. She has probably forgotten that I exist, since she is quite strong-willed and lives in a different part of the state, where she won't see my occasional TV appearances. She has no reason to think about me or the sad events of so long ago. She, after all, didn't do anything wrong.
I suppose I still love her, or the memory of her, jewel of my youth and goddess of dreams.

Sure I think about you now and then
But it’s been a long, long time.
I’ve got a good life now, I’ve moved on
So when you cross my mind...
I try not to think about

What might have been

’Cause that was then
And we’ve taken different roads
We can’t go back again, there’s no use giving in
And there’s no way to know

What might have been.

We could sit and talk about this all night long,
And wonder why we didn’t last
Yes, they might be the best days we will ever know
But we’ll have to leave them in the past.

That same old look in your eyes
It’s a beautiful night
I’m so tempted to stay
But too much time has gone by
We should just say goodbye
And turn and walk away.

No, we’ll never know

What might have been...

Thank you for that. I have two more children. I like to think that they would exist even if they had a different mother, but they would not be the same people. It would also negate the existence of Carolyn's children, of which she is reported to have two.

Fate and the flow of time take many strange turns, and I have to say that on the whole they have been kind to me. There have been tragedies, some very bitter indeed, but more triumphs, and I have never been able to complain that I was dealt a bad hand.

I suppose the lesson of the Carolyn episode is that our own actions and choices are the driving force of our lives. This is so contrary to the deterministic propaganda that seems to inform so much of present culture; which I suppose puts a political spin on it after all.

I usually try to not lean to this type of dialogue but I was reading his works and I came to this one and it is so funny and stupid and he tells this story with such humor I thought I might post it here. I do not mean to offend and neither does he. He is just trying to show and tell how ridiculous life in our universities have become. After reading this I do not think we can save our university system.

Mike S. Adams (archive)

March 17, 2005

In 2003, the Women’s Resource Center (WRC) at UNC-Wilmington embarrassed the university by placing an obscene advertisement for The Vagina Monologues (TVM) just outside the entrance to the school cafeteria. The sign, reading “p---s unite,” was even seen by children entering the cafeteria with their parents.

Last week, the WRC decided to advertise TVM on the lighted marquee in front of the university. Wilmington residents were greeted by the word “vagina” flashing in bright lights as they passed the university on the way to work, to school, or to church. In fact, the flashing “vagina” sign was positioned right across the street from the Greek Orthodox Church and the administrative headquarters of the local Baptist Church."

Labor in Iran is in favor of reformation to a mullahless government.

As many as 85% of the young want mullahless rule. As high as 70% middle aged want mullahless rule.

If we tip it with boots on the ground we will get no welcome from 100% of Iranians.

If we tip it without boots on the ground majority rule should find a way to take over.

If not.:( We will have detroyed most of its military and pushed back the large scale threat they are surely amassing.

christheprofessor,

True story.
Friends are downtown at the bar in the Radisson a couple of nights before the Kentucky Derby is to be run. OJ Simpson is in town for the Derby and is with his entourage in the corner of the bar.

Two of our friends - John and Rex - are at the bar, Rex orders up three shots of tequila, and asks the bartender to take one over to OJ with his compliments. John's going, "No, man, let's not get into this", and Rex says, "Relax, John. It'll be OK."

The bartender takes the shot of tequila to OJ and points in Rex's direction. OJ smiles that big old good guy smile, nods at Rex and John, and raises the shotglass to toast them.

Rex raises his glass and shouts across the bar...

446 Shiplord Kirel  Sat, Jun 4, 2005 5:51:23pm

A joke:

A high school history teacher is at her wit's end trying to get her students interested in a test review she has planned. She finally decides to turn it into a kind of contest.
"Ok, class," she tells the sleepy-eyed youngsters, "I am going to read a quote from American history and you need to tell me who said it and when. I want a name and a date."

The class stares blankly, but she perseveres, "The first one is 'Give me liberty or give me death!' Who said that and when?"

The kids sit there glassy-eyed, except for a Japanese boy sitting right at the front of the class. He raises his hand and declares enthusiastically, "Patrick Henry, 1770!"

"Right, excellent, excellent. Next one is 'I have not yet begun to fight'"

Again, the American kids sit there comatose, while the Japanese youngster raises his hand and says, "John Paul Jones, 1778!"

"Right! Right again," says the teacher.

This goes on for a while and the teacher finally loses her patience.

"You know, I am really disappointed with you American young people. Here is this young man from Japan--- I happen to know he has only lived here 6 months--- yet he literally knows more about your history than all of you put together."

She turns around to write something on the board and somebody at the back of the class grumbles, "Well, just fuck them Japanese anyway!"

The teacher hears this, turns around outraged, and demands, "Who said that!? WHO SAID THAT!?"

One of the American kids quickly raises her hand and says, "Harry Truman, 1945."

Actually, it was seven weeks, but split up - in for two weeks, out for 5 days, in for two weeks, out for two months, in for a week, etc.
I'm the only one I know who didn't work at the hospital, but seemed to have a regular commute there!
And I just have to say that NYC EMS are the BEST!

There must not be any yankees at all up north judging by how many are wanderin' aimlessly around down here.

Lol I am really laughing so hard. I really do not like up north. I went off once with some family to Wisconsin. I had Capt Mike with me. He was 9 then. Any way we got up there. It was a nightmare. First we drove and drove and drove through cornfields. Everytime we stopped to sleep and eat it was always out in the boondocks in some desolate looking place with god awful grain elevators (like in Picnic). The people at these places thought we were "slow". As soon as we got there I was ready to leave. Well I don't fly (another phobia). I came through Chicago on a Greyhound. Believe me this was an experience to write about. When we got to Memphis (oh dear great Memphis rising above the Mississippi River) where people talked like me ( I am educated I know it should be "speak as I do") just thought I would correct that phrase I know some think I am illiterate. I cried all the way to Jackson Mississippi. From there it was old 51 south. Crepe Mrytles hanging over the road. Front lawns filled with flowers, friendly people talking to each other on the streets. Really Old 51 up that way is quite beautiful. I vowed never to go North again. Well capt Mike is stationed up north. I drove all the way up there to see him before he went to Afghanistan. Only for him would I have done such a thing. When I finally got there he was living out in a cow field in the boon docks. I asked him boy what did you do wrong to get sent to this god awful place? He said Mama I didn't do anything. Well if he did do something that must be where the army sends Southerners to be punished. Most of the others were from Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana. All of them black and white hated this place. What really galls me is when I hear people talking about southerners. They seem to have some idea we are all dying to move up there and live with them. I know this post is long but I just felt it was time to correct this myth.

525 quark2  Sat, Jun 4, 2005 7:22:58pm

I don't plan to go there. I know we are all americans. When northeners come to the south we have this thing called southern hospitality. I felt no hospitality in these places. It is not just my opinion. It is a fact. They do think we are all stupid and backward. It makes them feel superior. In fact they need to know some truths about how southerners feel toward them. Insulted we feel insulted. After the stuff I have read all over the internet after this last election. The derogatory remarks made concerning their fellow americans I feel sure they can handle a little criticism on their side. By the way I go and don't go where ever I please. Gladly, if they are the kind that go well with Zatarain's crab boil, corn on the cob, and taters.

Yep, them's the ones.

BTW, not my intention to be rude. You're welcome, most kindly.

quark2- I didn't think the 'tutoyer' was appropriate for a formal greeting?

Chris, I am shocked. When insulting a lady, it is customary to use "ma'am".

/should be ashamed.

Now hold it! Didn't you tell me not to mention the 'you-know-whats' to people from outside the South. Keep our bugs to ourselves, and our favorite fishing holes.

I know I know. I broke that rule. I have been under much stress. But it is still no excuse. I didn't remember who I told that bit of wisdom to. It was you? Your grandmother is from Louisiana? People get confused about me. I claim Louisiana and Mississippi as home. My mother was from MS and Daddy Louisiana. I love them both. I have also developed these great love for Georgia. Oh heck I just love the South. how you been?

Hey, Ward! June doin' okay with her treatments?

(Mother-in-law was quite ill, but now at 12 years with no signs of recurrence.)

I have also developed these great love for Georgia.

Sigh. Me, too. Used to think Georgia was b-o-r-i-n-g. Now there are too many people movin' in around me (city folk) who do not wave. They honk their horn in a rude manner when the light changes and somebody doesn't immediately hit the accelerator (but I blame myself for not shootin' out their radiator when that happens).

That was me...er...I. Remember, I was going to ponder the fate of Islam, with a nice dinner of shrimp stuffed porkchops with macque choix. Ugh. I'm still stuffed, just talking about food. I had one grandma from Ol'Miss, and the other from NW La. I have relatives in BR, Plaquemine, Lafayette,French Settlement, and NO.

Bubbles? Did you bail or jump threads?

570 SwampWoman  Sat, Jun 4, 2005 8:20:48pm

Well, reckon I better go to sleep now because I'm gonna pick up Jheka after breakfast and head south. If I don't put in 6 miles at the track and clean out the barn first this time, I might hold up my end of the conversation so well that he can't get a word in edgewise.

Course, he does have that natural advantage of bein' able to talk faster.

lol I never advocated violence. but it does get weary just having to bear these slings and arrows. Tonight I just need to vent. I've been reading DU for months. Geez they are tiresome. But I watch to see what the little moonbats are brewing. But geez for a southener to read their crap. Now they are toning it down some. Southern bashing I mean. They still ranting about everything else. But they have decided they might need to play nicey to the South since their great leader came down and ate collard greens with us. They really got some nerve. They really dumb enough to think they can convince us they are our best friends.

Did he eat grits, too? How 'bout boiled peanuts?

Oh, CRAP, I have Jheka's boiled peanuts out in the van.

You know what? I think I'm gonna eat 'em myself.

Indeed there is. I still keep a bottle of Steen's in the pantry for my biscuits and sweet 'taters. As for delving into the 'nether' world of the LLL, if you must, small doses only. If you find your BP rising, just take a deep breath, roll your neck, and repeat my name 3x.

good night all.

happy tomorrow, lizards...

582 no2liberals  Sat, Jun 4, 2005 8:43:38pm

It is time to bid you all a good night. Company is gone, dishes are done, the best ol'cat in the world is right beside me, life is good. I served my southern fried chicken, with rice and cream gravy, and a fresh spinach salad. I soak the chicken in a hypersaline solution with some habanero sauce for at least 24hrs before frying. I have a pleasant feeling right now.

My days of lurking around libs are about over. I was getting bored anyway everyday some new crazy conspiracy. Those people can really get wierd in their minds sometimes. Besides I have got something big to do in my life now. I have this friend. He is a really good friend. Anyway there is a large tumor. He will be needing me. We kind of look out for each other. I'm thinking he is going to need looking after.

Sorry for the late comeback

My electronic Nancy Pelosi remark was directed at your post of the new IDF noise gun that

Military sources confirmed soldiers used the sound gun, which emits a painful burst of sound at a special frequency making it uncomfortable

Man, that womans voice grates on my nerves.
