The Downing Street memos: fake but accurate.

The eight memos — all labeled “secret” or “confidential” — were first obtained by British reporter Michael Smith, who has written about them in The Daily Telegraph and The Sunday Times.

Smith told AP he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.

You have got to be kidding. Lock the originals in your lawyer's safe, sure, but destroy them? No serious journalist can, with a straight face, say that there is any merit to this guy's claims.

But AP attempts to gloss over this gaping credibility gap with this:

A senior British official who reviewed the copies said their content appeared authentic.

So, Mr. May or May Not Exist looked at words the reporter typed and said "Yeah, that looks like the kind of thing a government official would write?"

Awfully weak tea there, Smith, old chap.

8 TotallySirius  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 12:43:59pm

By the way,did he copy them at a Kinko's?

Ahem! That was already posted by moi, er, sorry just got off the EU thread, me at #40 on the Miscellaneous Links page and I liked it so much I copied and pasted it at #7 on the EU thread too!
Great minds think alike, Charles, but you can't duck your responsibility for this - had you not ripped open the charade Dan Rather and CBS tried to perpetrate with the TANG memos, journalists wouldn't be reduced to destroying alleged originals, after obtaining them and copying them from undisclosed sources.
Yah just know that good ole Danny boy is reading that and thinking "duh, why didn't we think of that?".

13 realwest  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 12:49:40pm

#10 TotallySirius - it's not even good enough to sit down in court - either a real court or the court of public opinion. Of course, since the MSM nearly controls the court of public opinion, it might hold up for them.
Orson Buggy - I'm rethinking your comment to me about this on the Miscellaneous Links thread; Jayson Blair may in fact have moved to England after all!

I agree with above. The originals are kept, under lock and key. No one would destroy them.

What is even more corrupt is that a journalist would even think it was acceptable to claim that they typed up their own evidence and destroyed the originals.

I'm going to print up a Lotto ticket tomorrow with tonight's winning numbers. I'll just say I accidentally destroyed the original. AP will surely back me up on the credibility and legality of my claim. Easy Street, here I come!

I just looked at the first two documents. They appear to have been converted to PFD from either a fax or a scanner, probably a fax. The real interesting thing is that both PDF files were created on 9/21/2004. If the PDF copies of these documents have been around that long, why are we just hearing about them?

23 Brandywine  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 12:57:42pm

Neither Bush nor Blair (or anyone else in either govt.) has said the memos were false. If they had been forged or altered, it would have been said. Why would Bush and Blair answer questions about the memos if they were false? By doing so, they confirmed they were real. Suggesting they were forged is just silly.

George Bush did not claim Bill Burkett's ridiculous TANG Memos were false, either, only that he knew nothing of them. In fact, many on the Left still use that as proof that they are real.

34 Orson Buggy  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 1:06:40pm

[Suggesting they were forged is just silly.]

They *are* forged. The reporter himself admits he produced them by typing them up.

Besides, even if genuine, there isn't any damning evidence there. All leaders of nations have frank discussions about this kinda shit. They all haev those who criticize them for their ideas and decisions as well.

Who gives a rat's ass? There has been ample reason to take out Saddam since the first violations of the sanctions after GW1. The first missile shot at our air patrols was reason enough for me. The deaths due to Saddam's cruelty are reason enough. The fact that Saddam supported suicide bombers in Israel is reason enough. And, the bastard had the weapons, thanks to Russia, they are ferreted away somewhere else, most likely because Saddam's weapons program had Russian fingerprints all over it.

I see we killed another 50 of those jihadist bastards. Hooah!

Does anyone else recall that the idea of invading Iraq was all over the news in the Summer of 2002?

Where did UN Res 1441 come from in November of 2002, if not for the White House's pressure to get serious with Saddam?

Hello? This is not news. For instance, at LGF on June 11, 2002

The sources said Mubarak turned down Bush's appeal for Egypt's cooperation in a military campaign to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein. They said the U.S. president urged his Egyptian counterpart to end diplomatic and trade cooperation with Baghdad.

Now we're supposed to be newly impressed that the Bush Administration was looking at dropping the hammer on Saddam?

We knew this 3 years ago! So what?

This is silly. The journo was protecting his source. Many sensitive documents are marked in ways that identify who the document was given to. These markings can be invisible or undetectable.

Again, this is entirely absurd notion, that the DSM is not genuine. Bush and Blair addressed points in the memo at their press conference. Ask yourself, why would they do that if they knew the docs were false, in any way? And how would they not know?

I love the last line in this paragraph:

The AP obtained copies of six of the memos (the other two have circulated widely). A senior British official who reviewed the copies said their content appeared authentic. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secret nature of the material.

Apparantly, when a document and its information are considered "Classified" or "Secret" it is not in refernce to the document or the information itself; just the identity of the official leaking said document.

Indisputably true. However, you have to make a strong enough case to convince 2/3rds of the people making the decision.

I could write literally anything on a piece of paper. "Elvis is a Space Alien held by the CIA at Area 51." Then I could walk out the door and claim that I'd copied it from a secret memo, and then destroyed the original. You see what I'm saying? There's no credibility whatsoever here.

Let's see... there may have been a plan on the table to depose Sadam before the 9/11 attack on America. This is a problem, why? AHH, because some pisswillie leftoid doesn't trust a president who thought preparedness for war was a necessity. Of course! Good presidents only prepare for peace. That's what the ever so trustworthy United Nations is there for. So we don't have to prepare for wars, or anything.
You know what? I'll bet there is a plan on the table for war with North Korea. I bet there is a plan on the table for war against Syria, and Iran. Strike that- I hope to God that there is plan on the table for war against Iran, Syria, and North Korea. It would be suicidal not to have those plans on the table.

Bush has decided to overthrow Hussein
By Warren P. Strobel and John Walcott
Posted on Wed, Feb. 13, 2002

[Link: www.realcities.com...]

WASHINGTON - President Bush has decided to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from power and ordered the CIA, the Pentagon and other agencies to devise a combination of military, diplomatic and covert steps to achieve that goal, senior U.S. officials said Tuesday.
No military strike is imminent, but Bush has concluded that Saddam and his nuclear, chemical and biological weapons programs are such a threat to U.S. security that the Iraqi dictator must be removed, even if U.S. allies do not help, said the officials, who all spoke on condition of anonymity.
"This is not an argument about whether to get rid of Saddam Hussein. That debate is over. This is ... how you do it," a senior administration official said in an interview with Knight Ridder.
Bush also is dispatching Vice President Cheney next month on a tour of 11 Middle East nations, including many of Iraq's neighbors, whose leaders are leery of a U.S. attack on Baghdad.
While the mission's purpose has been portrayed publicly as sounding out Middle Eastern leaders on Iraq policy, Cheney in fact will tell them that the United States intends to get rid of Saddam and his regime, several top Bush aides said.
"He's not going to beg for support. He's going to inform them that the president's decision has been made and will be carried out, and if they want some input into how and when it's carried out, now's the time for them to speak up," one senior official said.
Secretary of State Colin Powell signaled Bush's new approach last Thursday, telling a House of Representatives committee that "regime change" in Iraq "is something the United States might have to do alone."

Bush and Blair dismissed them as absurd. What else would they do, indeed.

They dismissed as absurd the idea that Bush had already decided to attack Iraq, as suggested by the DSM. They did not say the memo was 'absurd' or question its authenticity. Also, it's worth noting that around that time Bush transferred $700 million from the war in Afghanistan to war planning for Iraq, which strongly supports the contention of the DSM.

Folks here are passionate about lots of things and we frequently disagree about matters, usually in a respectful manner. What most folks here don't treat respectfully are comments and commentators that are so easliy sliced and diced. You obviously didn't read what Charles posted (typed vs. copied by hand) haven't read any comments not directly addressed to you but which addressed your "arguements" (Bush answered questions about them, therefor they must be accurate) and HAVE MISSED THE WHOLE POINT. This isn't about whether or not Bush was contemplating forcing a regime change in Iraq; that has been exceedingly well documented in a zillion other places. This is about the media and reportorial integrity or the lack thereof.
Jeebus, please get a clue.

Ms. Rice was in similar lock step with Mr. Bush, and Mr. Cheney, on going to war with Iraq, senior advisers to the president said, and served as an implementer of the president's wishes. Richard Haass, the former director of policy planning at the State Department who is now the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, recalls going to see Ms. Rice in July 2002, well before the president began making a public case for ousting Mr. Hussein, to discuss with Ms. Rice ''the pros and cons'' of making Iraq a priority.
''Basically she cut me off and said, 'Save your breath -- the president has already decided what he's going to do on this,' '' Mr. Haass said.

"We're taking him out"
Daniel Eisenberg. Time. New York: May 13, 2002.
Vol.159, Iss. 19; pg. 36, 3 pgs

TWO MONTHS AGO, A group of Republican and Democratic Senators went to the White House to meet with Condoleezza Rice, the President's National Security Adviser. Bush was not scheduled to attend but poked his head in anyway-and soon turned the discussion to Iraq. The President has strong feelings about Saddam Hussein (you might too if the man had tried to assassinate your father, which Saddam attempted to do when former President George Bush visited Kuwait in 1993) and did not try to hide them. He showed little interest in debating what to do about Saddam. Instead, he became notably animated, according to one person in the room, used a vulgar epithet to refer to Saddam and concluded with four words that left no one in doubt about Bush's intentions: "We're taking him out."

Mr. Woodward says in the book that the administration -- without informing Congress -- also diverted $700 million in funds, including military appropriations for Afghanistan, for Gen. Tommy Franks, who was secretly planning the campaign against Iraq. 127 Powderfinger  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 1:48:04pm

I have in my possesion a document in which Saddam Hussein states that he simply adores WMD, and that he kept a vast array of weapons in Iraq. He further affirms that upon recognizing that the Coalition was about to invade, he invoked a prearranged plan to diperse his WMD to Iran and Syria. He also speaks to the vast network he has set up to disrupt Iraqi society in the event that he is deposed. This documemnt bears Saddam's signature, so you can tell that it is authentic.

Of course, I retyped it and destroyed the original, but you can trust me on this.

"IRAQ: PRIME MINISTER'S MEETING, 23 JULY
C reported on his recent talks in Washington. There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable. Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy. The NSC had no patience with the UN route, and no enthusiasm for publishing material on the Iraqi regime's record. There was little discussion in Washington of the aftermath after military action.
The Foreign Secretary said he would discuss this with Colin Powell this week. It seemed clear that Bush had made up his mind to take military action, even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran."

Shocking, the lack of whiteout or permanent markers in Britain.
So was it Galloway who gave these "memos" to the reporter. Bet he steps forward and lies that he was the one who did.

Liberals lack any moral clarity, therefor it is only when they are attacked do they know to defend themselves. Hence their often misplace support of the self-proclaimed underdog.

Soon. I'm waiting for inspiration. I copied the original leaked Saudi communique, then destroyed the original.

Have you ever noticed that journalists can come up with most f***ing ridiculous excuses/reasons and they can get published and draw a freakin' paycheck anyway, while in the working world I can actually certify that a different concrete mix arrived at a slab than what I had ordered, I poured it innocently and with good intentions not knowing the difference, and when the work is f***ed up, guess what, I don't get paid? And not only that, have to bust out the f***ed up slab, remove it, apologize profusely, and replace it?

I would sure as hell like to see some accountability from these people.

Latest from the AP... this reporter must have been a prolific typist, and notice how the newspaper proclaim his copies as "authentic"

Smith told AP he protected the identity of the source he had obtained the documents from by typing copies of them on plain paper and destroying the originals.

The AP obtained copies of six of the memos (the other two have circulated widely). A senior British official who reviewed the copies said their content appeared authentic. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the secret nature of the material.

The eight documents total 36 pages and range from 10-page and eight-page studies on military and legal options in Iraq, to brief memorandums from British officials and the minutes of a private meeting held by Blair and his top advisers.

It's interesting looking back in the archives of LGF, how the comments here used to host interesting discourse from people with different opinions. The 'troll' label was reserved for disruptive posters who tried to hi-jack threads, not people who disagreed with a premise, like the notion the DSM(s) were forged or otherwise false. Nor, until quite recently, were such disagreements answered with childish insults, like 'fucking retard', and threads devolved into lame back-slapping of the 'we showed him/her' kind. Really, if you think about what a troll is, someone who disrupts a thread, then reaganite and buddies fit the description: rather than debate the issue they stoop to personal attacks then when all debate has stopped, absolutely and finally kill the topic with idiotic chit-chat.

#237 Brandywhine - "rather than debate the issue they stoop to personal attacks then when all debate has stopped, absolutely and finally kill the topic with idiotic chit-chat." And there's your problem right there.
Not only was this thread NOT about the accuracy of the memos (yeah, we're all really SURPRISED that Bush was contemplating regime change, as was Bill Clinton) but rather about journalistic integrity.

You ARE a troll in that you don't debate. You make a series of posts all to the effect that Bush didn't deny the memos were false, ergo they must be true, and IGNORE all of the other posters who, at least initially, POLITELY tried to debate with you.
A debate is when someone states something, someone else challenges it, and the first person responds to that challenge, not merely repeats what they said the first time.

Gee, I hope reaganite and others didn't offend your delicate sensibilities so much that you won't be coming back.

249 really grumpy big dog johnson  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 3:14:17pm

Maybe I should mention something that probably never occurred to the Pine Nut.

In international meetings held by goverment officials on sensitive issues, it is the responsibility of the hosting country to record the minutes.

The United States of America, like every other responsible entity on this planet, has a person who sits in on the meeting and takes notes, and before the official minutes are formally finalized, is allowed to object to any information in the minutes that may have been deemed to be inaccurate, incomplete, or false.

The reasons for this are legion. First, it avoids the he said/she said type of accusations that might ensue after a particularly acrimonious meeting between or among countries. And secondly, it avoids the sticky wicket of multiple variations upon the same story being used for varying agendas based upon geographic biases from becoming part of history. Think about it, it's not rocket science.

Pine Nut claims knowledge that no one other than his/her kind has. Such a gift.

The facts are that no-one in either administration has disputed the authenticity of the contents of the DS Memos.

Reason tells us that since the contents are embarrassing to both administration, had they been able to challenge authenticity, they would have done so. Also since people are quoted (and indentified) near-verbatim in said memos those people would and could have disputed any misrepresentation.

Brandywhine,

Just maybe for a second you might think that the sheer shrill idiocy of the accusations as well as the frequency of same might force the administration to abstain from response, in order to avoid reducing themselves to the same course level of discourse that you prefer?

That's what really gets you, isn't it? That you can't trick the President into saying something about riduculous accusations that you can use as ammunition to elevate the status of your intifada?

#237 - No name, no credibility.

What happened to the reporter who recieved the memos? What's his name? OH- another "anonymous source," this time a "reporter" for a British left-wing paper. If he/she/it is so sure of the memos' conclusiveness and validity, they should put a name and face behind the accusations, innuendos and allegations. But they won't, because when this latest attempt to destroy the Bush team doesn't work, nobody will man-up and take any blame for it. Can't wait for the fallout.

We already had this game played by cBS, Newsweak, the NYSLIMES, and a garden variety of other leftist publications when they came out with their "smoking guns." When examined with scrutiny, however, their "stories" became about bad journalism instead of Bush, and the offending vermin scattered and disintegrated like cockroaches under a massive 100,000 cubic foot magnifying glass.

Its getting old, troll. Try real life above ground and in the open sometime - you may enjoy it better that that subterrainian sewer where you all live and "publish" from.

Caught heck a number of times for fighting with my brother, although normally what I'd do is provoke him until he physically hit me, and then try to get him into trouble for it.

At least half the time when he tried to whack me, it was my fault for torturing the heck out of him.

... possibly three-fourths.

It is interesting that the memos haven't been disputed. Neither were the TANG ones, though--and those were completely obvious. (Well, with Charles's help and a program that makes images switch back and forth.)

If these "memos," the looney liberal left's latest wet dream, were anything more than fake but accurate, lawyers would be falling over each other to get in on this one. They would be building a "dream team" that makes Wacko Jaco's defense look like Romper Room. The LLL is grasping at straws to think this has any real merit. They can dream, they have nothing left. They don't control the House, Senate or the White House so they have to go down to the basement to "play house" with their mock impeachment hearings because the big boys will not let them play in the "living room."

Why didn't Bush dispute the "facts" as laid out in the TANG memo?

I have no idea. But it's not the same: Bush *did* dispute the facts in the DSM, and therein lies the problem for both him and Blair. That memo and seven others since released, tell a different tale than the one told at the time, that war was to be a last resort, not a done deal. Thus, the appearance of lying by both Bush and Blair, some would say proof. Now, not everybody minds being lied to a leader they support, but some do. People who don't support that leader mind a lot. (It's worth remembering that after 9/11 a lot of people who were not supporters of Bush were solidly behind the routing of the Taliban - I was one).

Again, I believe facts and reason tell us that the chances of the DSM (and 7 more like it) being faked or forged in some way, considering that they are minutes of meetings more than a few people attended, are remote, to say the least.

And to another poster who suggested my reviewing the TANG memo flap, apples and oranges, I believe.

Finally, to Perelandra, I already agreed. Being name-called is no reason to do the same.

269 jwm  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 3:47:24pm

You know what I think it is that is driving all these leftoid whiners insane?
The Donks' fair haired boy, ol' Ceegar Willie was outed, busted, and impeached for being the lying sleaze bag that he was. He disgraced the country and the office of the presidency. He left us unprepared, vulnerable, and open for the attacks of Sept 11.(for the record- I voted for him twice)
And they can't scare up a scandal on George W Bush to save their miserable souls. So they try and manufacture scandal. It doesn't work, and this increases their frustration until they actually have to hold A MOCK TRIAL to satisfy their childish wishful thinking. What is just anathema to these people is that the United States is, quite simply, the finest nation in the history of the planet, and that GWB is a leader of honor, integrity, and competence. Is everyone here at LGF in lockstep with Bush on everything? No. I have my beefs. So do many LGF'ers. But even though we may disagree with some of the things Bush does, we recognize that we are fortunate- indeed, blessed to have this man at this time, in this office.

Do you have an original of the Downing Street Memo? (aka DSM)

And why are you assigning a formal acronym to a highly questionable document that never indicted our President in the first place?

Do you have any powers of comprehension, or are you just terminallly stupid?

And now you have "copies" of destroyed additional documents (since the first didn't take...) that further indict the President for what? You don't think at all that it's convenient that the originals were destroyed, since you KNOW that the source would be snuffed, just like GITMO.

Geez, you are a freak and a fool.

I just re-read the article you linked.
The whole problem with the LLL is that they have FORGOTTEN what happened that day. We here have not. That seems to be the basic difference between those of us who will never give up and those who would rather look for blame anywhere but where it belongs
It's the terrorists stupid!

How can anyone forget what happened that day? What some forget is that OBL is still at large, still commanding AQ and probably receiving assistance from the Pakistani Secret Police. What some also forget is that Saudi Arabia provided most of the terrorist that day, and still provides more and money. What some forget (or choose to ignore) is that the Bush Family are way way too close to the Saudi Royal Family who made a devil's deal with the religous fanatics behind 9/11. (That picture of Bush holding hands with the King made me want to puke). What some forget is that Saddam, for all his many evils (many, many) had nothing to do with 9/11. Zip. Nada. Even Cheney, who had been remorselessly promoting that notion, finally had to admit there was no connection.

There's plenty of blame to go around. Clinton for not doing more during his term, Bush for worrying about stem-cells when a memo predicting an attack lay unadressed on his desk. The airlines for resisting armored doors for years before because of the cost. On and on and on.

I just wish Iraq had been contained as before, and the resources had gone to really cleaning the Taliban out of afghanistan and (most important) getting rid of the poppy crop that finances global terrorism. Oh, and some of that 300 billion being spent on chemical plant security and port security. And enforcing the Northern and Southern borders too.

And a few more things.

274 realwest  Sat, Jun 18, 2005 3:59:41pm

#268 Brandywine - how can you say "apples to oranges" when you haven't even read the Rathergate section here? The lack of journalistic ethics IS THE THEME OF THIS POST BY CHARLES.
Bush didn't dispute the TANG memos, either. That didn't make them true. He hasn't disputed the "facts" in the DSM, either. That doesn't make them true, either. Those memos were written in June of 2002; there were numerous articles, TV "News" stories and the like before and after that, LONG before Congress voted to go into Iraq, indicating Bush's desire for regime change in Iraq.
I'm through with you; you are not stupid, you are not naive, you just don't want to or are unable to address the theme of this post. And pointing this out to you, over and over, is obviously not going to be productive.

The trolls simply do not seem to understand that we are at war - not just in Afganistan and Iraq but globally - and denying that situation is suicidal. We are fortunate to have a President with the leadership and conviction to pursue the messengers of evil wherever they show. Petty partisan politics need to stop. Actually they should have never begun. The internal political bickering and positioning under the guise of "honest debate of the issues" just feeds the terror machine. Abu Grab, Git Mo, and DSM are simple chicken crap and do not deserve even the space they are getting here. Talk of impeachment is ridiculous and deserves a response of sedition or perhaps treason. The Democrats need to remember that united we stand, divided we fall. In my view killing Orcs in their lair beats having to bury our families here at home any day. It is a simple fact that we all cannot judge the Administration's actions day to day. We do not and can not have the context in which the decisions and actions are taken. Judge the Administration in agregate near the end of the term. I think you might be surprised at its win to loss ratio.

Okay, let's take the worst possible scenario, all the forged, retyped/destroyed memos and insinuations - and let's also throw in for good measure all the accusations made by Dean and moveon.org - are ALL true against that vast conspiracy by BushHitler/Cheney/RoveDarthVader. And then what? Roll back the time machine, stop the war, don't let Bush run for a 3rd term (whoops, he can't anyway). This is all such pointless crap...

We're NOT going to abandon the Iraqi people, we're NOT going to stop the war on terrorism, and the islamofascists are NOT going to stop trying to take over whatever it is they think they can take over in their insane jihadist mindset.

So all your ranting is just that, ranting. Do something positive with your time. Go check out [Link: www.anysoldier.com...] and send a package. Think about someone else for a change.

#312.

Well, the transfer of $700 million (not authorized by congress) from Afghanistan to Iraq war-planning happened at the same time, so that gives some weight to 'fixed'.

I'm missing something. How can the transfer of 700 million indicate that intelligence was being fixed? The transfer was done as part of potential pre-war planning. The Memo says the Administration had all but given up on a UN solution (paraphrased from memory). No surprise given the 12 year track record of the UN in trying to resolve the Iraq war.

Maybe it's not embarrassing. Some people think it's okay to lie (ends justifying, and so on..)

There is the lie accusation again. Who lied and when? What proof do you have?

Whoever is first in the field and awaits the coming of the enemy, will be fresh for the fight; whoever is second in the field and has to hasten to battle will arrive exhausted.
The clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy, but does not allow the enemy's will to be imposed on him.

So you have never been in a street fight. Thought so. Just a whiny brat that probably never had to earn anything. When I was young my parents told me never to fight. I quickly became the target of every bully. One day I carried two of them hanging from my neck for a quarter mile while they smashed my face. I got home and cleaned myself up. I made a promise to myself - never again. 55 years later - I have kept the promise. The bullies hit us on September 11. Never again without a full response. If I were the President the response would have been faster, harder and wider. Bullies ONLY understand force. Terrorists and their sympathizers only understand deadly force. Get used to it. It is going to be a long war.

Hats off to Ann and, actually, this part was pretty apt:

Although the American army was forced to retreat after the Battle of Brandywine, the defeat did not demoralize the men. They believed the defeat was not the result of poor fighting ability but rather because of unfamiliarity with the landscape and poor reconnaissance information.

Its been bugging the hell outta me lately...this bogus memo and the morons that defend it not withstanding...

It seems that there is now a mantra, even amongst "us" that since no WMD has been found, that none existed...

We cant pinpoint the most wanted terrorist in Iraq, we keep "stumbling" across mass graves, and they cant find a particular body on an Island as small as Aruba...

...but we havnt found any WMD caches in a country the size of Iraq, with its barren blethera of hiding potential...and lets dont forget they are willing to bury their revered leader in a small rathole with a fan...

Its assumed that there is no WMD at all, and the case is closed? JUst boggles my mind.

New leaked memos are raising further questions about whether the Bush administration ‘fixed’ its intel to justify the Iraq war.
By Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball
Newsweek
Updated: 6:59 p.m. ET June 15, 2005

June 15 - Two senior British government officials today acknowledged as authentic a series of 2002 pre-Iraq war memos stating that Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program was "effectively frozen" and that there was "no recent evidence" of Iraqi ties to international terrorism—private conclusions that contradicted two key pillars of the Bush administration's public case for the invasion in March 2003.
A March 8, 2002, secret "options" paper prepared by Prime Minister Tony Blair's top national-security aides also stated that intelligence on Saddam's purported weapons of mass destruction (WMD) was "poor." While noting that Saddam had used such weapons in the past and could do so again "if his regime were threatened," the options paper concluded "there is no greater threat now than in recent years that Saddam will use WMD."
A spokesman for No. 10 Downing Street, the office of the British prime minister, said today, “We would never comment on internal documents.” But two senior British officials, who asked not to be further identified because of the sensitivity of the material, told NEWSWEEK in separate interviews that they had no reason to question the authenticity of either the documents published by the Sunday Times or the related documents—including the March 2002 options paper.

"What theocracy?"

Brandywine, on the off chance you're still around and this hasn't been adequately handled, my hackles rose at this too. Hussein was bad enough; we should be specific about what he was and why it was bad.

Just as Stalinism and Nazism were "left" and "right" wing mutations of the same basic plan, so are Iraq-style "secular" and Iran-style "islamic" regimes. All four of these systems were/are, at their basic level, fascist - something liberals are supposed to oppose.

Reading Assignments: "Terror and Liberalism" by Paul Berman (a big lefty of long standing)

"Republic of Fear" Kanaan Makiya - get the second edition, whose preface does detail some of the ways Hussein's regime was converging with islamism in the nineties.

I know, I know, don't feed the trolls (especially on a dead or dying thread). But if there's the tiniest chance s/he/it will read these books, it was worth it.

Let's get this straight once and for all. The LLL is constructing a parallel universe right here - that is adjacent - to the one we're living in. They are currently trying to superimpose it on the real world, viz., Conyers in Congress, Isikoff in Newsweek, etc., etc., etc. So, it's a race to the death. Who's it gonna be, them or us? To paraphrase one of my fave philosophers, "The longer you ignore reality the worse it will be when it reasserts itself." Ergo, I vote for us.

(Looking down in shame) I know. There are some Yankees in my lineage, too. My in-laws were mortified that their son married (a) a woman that was actually in the military that could cuss a tick off a hound dog, and (b) that there were some yankees in the family tree.

I'm not sure which one horrified them the most. Probably the yankees in the bloodline part.

DNFTT! Must be in Danish or Korean. Lots of LGFers fall for it. And it makes it hard to lurk around and/or read comments. Trolls derail any thread if they are fed. There's even a c/p troll (copy/paste troll) and his second around. And one or two guys are able to destroy a whole line of reasoning and valuable exchange, thanks to the naivité of the people around here. Believe me, people, trolls diminish the quality and efectiveness of LGF. It's ok to engage people of all opinions, but as soon as someone says something outlandish (like calling the President a criminal) we should all GAZE.

Oh, ok. I know people like to play mental fencing and that's ok. It's just that there were dozens of posts on this thread between the trolls' and the LGFers' rebating them. So I miss the usual quality, thats all. ;)

Hello there, paisana. Are you working tonight?

So Swampie, what is a "trashy woman?"

So, in order to find out, you come to me, the authority on trashy women, huh, Bubbles?

According to "Confederate Railroad" trashy women "wear their clothes too tight, and their hair is dyed, too much lipstick and too much rouge..."

LMAO Too funny! No, just checking to see if your definition was the same as mine was...

Oh, ok. I know people like to play mental fencing and that's ok. It's just that there were dozens of posts on this thread between the trolls' and the LGFers' rebating them.

Oh, I agree with you. They come back and cut and past the same "arguments" every time; I just scroll over them. The rebuttals can get pretty interesting, though.

No, it wasn't directed at me, I don't think it was, he just mentioned he liked his women trashy. Not sure what he meant, that is why I asked your opinion.

I thought, well, he must know I am not trashy, so he is telling me, I don't fit his criteria?

Thank you. This thread was fairly interesting, to have the reporter who supposedly had gotten ahold of "original" memos from the British government and then wrote several newspaper articles based on them. I find it incredulous that this reporter would destroy the originals and type copies.

Did he tell the newspaper they were not the originals, I have a feeling he may not have.

I've been having Cuba libre for over 20 years and I'm not an iota closer to alcoholism now than then. I'm a complete alcoholic as I was back then hahahaha. Nonono. Thank God I'm not an alcoholic,so thank you, but don't worry for me on that count.
México is just fine. Life is so sweet and melow down here. No legal abortion, no eutanasia, no homosexual marriage or adoption. Lots of love for the Pope. We are like in a little Catholic cushion down here, protected from the grossest attacks of the One Worlders. Also, we have almost no Muslims here. But we better be with our eyes open, because we are truly hated in places like the UN for our total lack of accomplishment in fulfilling THE AGENDA. Well, some thoughts about it. :)

Yes, I'm preety sure that Muslims would have a very hard time trying to force us in any direction we don't like. Same with gays. But the amount of Muslims is very small here, if there were more, there would be big problems, of course Muslims will find Mexico almost as dangerous as their own madhouses lol, id they try to step on our feet, but it can still be horrible if they were, say, more than a fifth of the population. IMHO.

I agree with you, and believe me that I feel like crying upon agreeing. I used to love Europe, the best she has inspite all of her mistakes, but today, she looks like a blind bunch of people, vent only in their personal pleasure and period. Although, today, Spain gave a great demonstration when about a million people took to the streets in Madrid, coming from all over Spain, to protest gay marriage and adoption of children by gays. A little hope there.

No, not feeling sorry for myself because of my weight; feeling sorry for myself because I can't drink!

If I keep exercising and eating more or less correctly, the weight would be gone in about 4 months.

684 Myshkin  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:16:43am

Interesting thread. A couple of thoughts come to mind.

First off, there's a huge difference between the TANG Memos affair and this. I can see a reporter getting original documents, making copies and destroying to originals to protect his source, but I can't see him going thru the trouble of making them appear to be the originals as the author of the TANG memos did. That sleeze bag was a true piece of work who was trying to pull a fast one. Let's not elevate his stature by comparing his sophomoric prank to this.

Second, if the intent of the journalist was to protect his source, I think returning the memos would've been the safer course to take. Let's assume that classified memos are distributed with a means to identify their recipient (I believe that's done in congress, so it's not much of a stretch). Since the journalist has stated that he made copies and destroyed the originals, some unlucky soul no longer has his copy. That to me is the best reason to disbelieve the story. High level British 'sources' can't be that stupid. Can they?

685 KarmiCommunist  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 8:02:14am

This seems more like a *RUSH* to War, in my humble Low and Ignorant Insane swamp hermit opinion: 1) November 10, 1980 Iraq captures the Iranian port of Khorramshahr. 2) August 2, 1990 Iraq invades Kuwait. 3) January 29, 1991 Iraq attacks Khafji, in Saudi Arabia.

Iraq Energy Chronology: 1980-April 2005

The Battle of Khafji

Bush "41" was 'vOtEd' out of Office back then, and Saddam was allowed to continue his rule of Iraq for over a decade after:

February 28, 1991 Tariq 'Aziz announces Iraq's acceptance of all relevant U.N. Security Council Resolutions. Saddam Hussein calls on his troops to cease fire. President Bush announces a coalition ceasefire.

Apparently, according to the Downing Street Memos, W was suppose to give Saddam another decade, huh.

686 Roger  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 11:19:02am

Well what memos do we want to write today about moonbat Durbin and claim the originals have been destroyed to protect our sources? Oh that's right. Durbin doesn't need to be framed. He's quite capable of independently making an ass out of himself.

BTW, speaking of moonbats, did you see on foxnews website where Robert Redford claims there are fifteen Bush administration impeachable offenses that are more significant then Watergate? He decries they are not gaining traction with the public after best efforts by him and the rest of the moonbats to make it happen. Guess all that ciprofloxacin addles the brain.

687 dgbellak  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 3:19:18pm

I'm glad I cut my hair short, because the loons on this site would otherwise make me want to pull it out. Questioning the authenticity of the memos at this point is not only beyond the realm of sanity, it is also the clearest example yet of the way the authors and readers of this site distract themselves from the issues at hand.

Smith destroyed the originals to protect himself and all those associated with it between himself and the orginal officials involved. Anyone who has consulted a lawyer concerning sensitive, privileged information or (if you need a pop-cultural parallel) read a goddamned spy novel knows that when dealing with documents/microfilm/photos, the originals are always being sought - no originals, no problem. But information is information, and if it was inaccurate, that issue would be settled by the accused before others were taken up.

Further, the information has been authenticated by the PM's own Butler Committee and the Foreign Secretary. ([Link: rawstory.com...] Or will you guys only believe something when your fearless leader comes on TV and tells you?

Logic will reverse itself at will at LGF to suit the needs of its wingnuts.

Now, quit feebly trying to derail the issue presented by the DSMs and actually stick to the topic. OK, wingnuts?

688 EE  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 3:21:13pm

Since the reporter shredded the original, there is no way to inspect the original to see if it is genuine.

Dan Rather's producer Mary Mapes must be kicking herself for not explaining things in that way, that she had simply shredded the originals and recreated a copy on Word and then "aged" it by multiple Xerox copying.

In terms of evidence of genuineness, I don't see the difference between this and somebody fabricating a "document", as a work of fiction.

What a miserable joke this has turned out to be. And to think that there are people gullible enough to believe it.

689 dgbellak  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 4:18:48pm

I've decided the "fake" meme is just what you have cooked up while you're thinking of your rich and inevitably ludicrous defense of the facts presented by the memos.

In the meantime, thank you,Kevin Drum:

Here's Tony Blair himself on May 1, the day the first memo was published:

In a Sunday morning television interview, Mr. Blair did not deny that the meeting took place in July 2002, but he recalled that "subsequent to that meeting, we went the United Nations route," seeking a resolution in November 2002, calling on the Iraqi government to disarm.

Here's Knight Ridder on May 5:

A former senior U.S. official called it "an absolutely accurate description of what transpired" during the senior British intelligence officer's visit to Washington. He spoke on condition of anonymity.

Here's the Washington Post on June 12:

Excerpts were made available to The Washington Post, and the material was confirmed as authentic by British sources who sought anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the matter.

Give it up, guys. They're real.

I've typed a copy of an original document that proves that dgbellak is actively working toward the overthrow of the USA and is actively working in lock step with all enemies of the USA.

Note: I have destroyed the original document to protect my sources so only my typed copy exists and everyone I've shown it to confirms it looks like my typing and appears to be irrefutably authentic.

692 dgbellak  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 6:53:56pm

#691 Roger

Why must you fabricate to make a comparison?

Show it to my friends and have them confirm it's something I said and then your hypothetical situation might actually parallel reality. Then, if I were to make no efforts to deny your claims but instead attempted to reason "actively working toward the overthrow of the USA" or seriously discuss my alleged actions since, your example might be appropriate. As it stands, it's sputtering bullshit.

I am not actively working toward the overthrow of the USA, and I am not actively working in lock step with all enemies of the USA. After viewing your reasoning ability, I feel I actually have to state this disclaimer.

693 Roger  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:04:50pm

#692 dgbellak, only giving you a taste of the future if everybody starts doing what Michael Smith did. P.S. I don't have access to your friends:-) Without originals there is no story. I've never changed my position and if you show me where a pro-American pulled a Michael Smith I will say it isn't a story either.

694 Roger  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:13:07pm

#692 dgbellak, btw, you can't prove I fabricated it.

695 dgbellak  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:27:58pm

Roger

Can't prove what?

Facts, man, facts! You say you have something - what do you have? What have I said? What are my plans? Give some truth, watch me do a little word dance, and you'll have something! Say something substantial; don't just spout inanities!

And let's not mince words here. You have no say whatsoever when it comes to evaluating my patriotism. By "pro-American" you mean pro-Bush.

Cripes, people need a damn Wingnut-to-English dictionary here.

696 Roger  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:35:06pm

#695 dgbellak, can't prove I fabricated the document about you being an anti-American. I'm critical of the Bush admin btw. My typed copy is just as authentic as Michael Smith's typed copy. You say we are reversing logic as it conveniences us. Again I ask for an example of a pro-American(not conservative vs liberal but pro-American vs anti-American) doing a Michael Smith job on someone.

697 Roger  Sun, Jun 19, 2005 7:37:26pm

Re 696: and I will hold the same position and logic; that it is bad journalism pulling a Michael Smith and said reporter should find new career.

698 dgbellak  Mon, Jun 20, 2005 10:18:53am

So anytime you can't directly place the source, it's bad journalism?

Why do you even seek news? You don't know them, and you certainly couldn't always know for sure where they got their information. They could all be lying.

699 Roger  Mon, Jun 20, 2005 10:46:19am

#698 dgbellak, I think you're on to something:-) If the source documentation is destroyed it is particularily bad journalism (conservative or liberal) If more than one reporter can't get at the info? Bad journalism.

Have you ever talked to someone who was interviewed about an accident or event and they complain about what was written does not reflect what they told the reporter? And this is in cases where the journalist/reporter is not political? Did you see the I believe Zogby poll where Americans trust the US military 74% while the MSM 22%? Strikely odd numbers to have.

700 dgbellak  Tue, Jun 21, 2005 6:43:31pm

At any rate, all, the AP article is inaccurate. Smith returned the originals to his source while destroying his original photcopies - for the very same reason he allegedly destroyed the source documents: protection of those involved.

Have you ever talked to someone who was interviewed about an accident or event and they complain about what was written does not reflect what they told the reporter?

Roger, Smith didn't merely write about it; he presented the information verbatim. Therefore, how his words "reflect" what the memos contain is not and never was an issue, if that is in fact what you were getting at with that left-field analogy. So, please, for ethics sake, quit it with the goddamned parallels and just argue the issue at hand; you have proven yourself time and again to be quite inept at drawing them.

Unless you're downplaying media in general with that statement rather than discussing Smith. In that case, nice defelction; LGF regulars are very talented in that regard. But if no media is to be trusted (no picking and choosing, now, though I realize this is an ethics-free zone), then will you simply get all of your information from world-reknowned typeface expert Charles?
