Religion of Silly Seething

Sun, Sep 18, 2005 at 3:40:46 pm PDT

Here’s a followup to yesterday’s post about a Muslim Burger King employee who threatened a jihad over a design for an ice cream package that resembled the Arabic symbol for “Allah.”

Burger King promptly capitulated and removed the product from their stores.

Today The Sun published a picture of the dastardly dessert. (Hat tip: zulubaby.)

UPDATE at 9/18/05 3:53:15 pm:

Jeff Goldstein gets all semiotic with it.

If you're looking for something to offend you, you'll find it. Just another power play for the ROP to make sure no one, but NO ONE offends their sensibilities. Ever. Or "you'll get it." Thanks to the PC crowd.

Shame on BK for their surrender.

They could have fought this. And if CAIR through a fit, we could paste those pictures all over every media outlet and let the people of America see what a sham and idiocy organization CAIR is. This isn't even a crime of the PC policy. This is bullshit. I say again, they could have fought this--and looked entirely in their right for doing so.

But Burger King surrendered. In turn, I surrender myself as a customer.

16 Irenike  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 1:49:22pm

Just once, I'd like to see a company have a backbone.

BK could have said: "Stick the ice cream cone--and your miserable little jihad-- where the sun don't shine. And if you don't like it, go live in Gaza, you little loser."

Well I was starting from a position of skepticism regarding the reasons behind this one man war, but now my eyes have been opened. It seems the Muslims have co-opted some advertising for a symbol for Allah. I think it represents a goat ready for mounting but I am hardly an art major.

This is obviously a justification for a terror bombing campaign or whatever Mr. Durka Durka's sensibilities tell him is warranted.

20 Nim Chimpsky  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 1:50:29pm

Thank you Dr. Rorschach. Next they'll be complaining that the "face on Mars" resembles a passage from the Koran. Actually, I think that the ice cream cone drawing looks like the Virgin Mary.

21 TouchDown  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 1:50:31pm

Muslims are offended by non-Muslims.

That's the whole point.

It starts with ice cream cones, goes into suicide jihad bombings, and ends with continental dhimmitude.

If you look at the Islamic writing the top swoop swoops the wrong way to read as a softee sundae so NO, IT'S NOT MEANT TO BE ISLAMIC WRITING, IT'S A PICTURE OR AN OUTLINE OF A SOFTEE SUNDAE!

Even I can see that.

When your written language is a bunch of squiggles, anything looks like "Allah".

Heck, I've probably accidentally doodled something similar hundreds of times and then thrown away the paper. Is that the same as flushing a Quran? (I hope so)

Very disappointing. But it doesn't affect me too much--I'm more of a Jack-in-the-Box, Whataburger, and Wendy's sort of guy. Especially now that Wendy's brought back the Monterrey Ranch Chicken sandwich (for a limited time only).

Speaking of Wendy's, I once saw in a restaurant this bizarre painting of Dave Thomas, holding a red training manual with a raised hand, and a throng of adoring Wendy's employees gazing at him in awe. The caption read "Imparting the Wisdom." It looked very much like a Maoist propaganda poster.

I've got it! I'll sue my university for the use of the Roman-style letter "T" in writings, because it's an obvious blasphemy against the sacrifice of Jesus Christ! That'll teach them!

Ooh! I've got another one! If you look at the basic plan of any grid-based street system, you can basically find a swastika if you look hard enough. Just pick a point, and from it find two streets that branch out up and left, another two that go left and down, another pair that go down and right, and ditto right and up, ignoring anything else in the way. And voila... you've got a swastika.

It's everywhere!

Perhaps we should get the Jewish community to protest the OBVIOUS neo-Nazi sympathies of cities, city planners, and the government's CLEAR AGENDA to exterminate jooooos?

49 Broomer  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 1:59:36pm

Which market is larger - Muslim or non-muslim?

BK may have appeased to the Muslim, but at the expense of the non-Muslim.

Time to stop eating at BK. Time to send a message the appeasing to the Muslim "imaginary" sensitivities hurts the BIGGER bottom line.

Too bad because the last time I was in Israel I've seen BK everywhere.

I don't see much similarity. In fact, I say they are clearly distinct from each other. What I do see, however, is little pitchforks on the ends of the "symbol" for the demon that dealth cult believes is a god.

55 LargeCanine  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 2:03:30pm

They'll be putting BK out of business by making demands in increments. Wonder how long before the dhimmi idjits realize they've been targetted for bankruptcy by islam?

#38: I remember that case:

Nike and Islamic group end logo logjam

Athletic footwear company Nike and an Islamic organization broke ground on a playground on Saturday and announced that a controversy over a shoe logo is over. Nike and the Council on American-Islamic Relations completed an agreement last week, officially resolving a problem that began in April 1997 when CAIR objected to a shoe with a design on the heel similar to the Arabic word for "God" or "Allah." As part of the final agreement, Nike is building three playgrounds for Islamic communities in the United States, said Roy Agostino, communications manager for Nike. CAIR will decide where the playgrounds will be.

NIKE Reaches Accord With Islamic Group - CAIR

On March 27, CAIR indicated that commercial product with the amended logo, becoming available at retail, included a graphic design that could still "be interpreted as the Arabic word 'Allah.' CAIR demanded the following of NIKE:

* an apology to Muslims
* an internal investigation of how this incident occurred.
* sensitivity training on Islam for Nike employees
* the immediate recall of all shoes using either offensive symbol

6. Since that time, NIKE has taken the following steps to account for and resolve this issue:

7. NIKE has apologized to the Islamic community for any unintentional offense to their sensibilities.

8. NIKE has implemented a global recall of the original salesman samples, including an accounting of any samples which may have been sold.

9. NIKE has diverted shipments of the commercial products in question from "sensitive" markets. To date, over 30,000 pairs have been diverted from Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Malaysia, Indonesia and Turkey.

10. NIKE has discontinued all models with the offending logo. No further product with either version of the logo will be produced.

11. NIKE has agreed to pull back all remaining product in their distribution center.

12. NIKE has implemented organizational changes to their design department to tighten scrutiny of logo design. Responsibility has been centralized into one department and all graphic designs must now be approved by a design review board.

13. NIKE is working with CAIR to identify Muslim design resources for future reference.

14. NIKE has taken measures to raise their internal understanding of Islamic issues. Specifically:

* Worked with CAIR to identify reference materials to locate in their
Design Library
* Scheduled a discussion on Islamic imagery at their next Design
Summit
* Centralize the graphic design process to ensure those with
familiarity in Islamic issues evaluate all graphic designs
* Conducted a formal investigation into this issue, and CAIR is
satisfied that no deliberate offense to the Islamic community was
intended.

Speaking of burkas in Europe, today my family and I visited Greenfield Village in Al-Dearborn Michigan. Remember that Henry Ford, the much lionized captain of industry, was no friend to the joooooooooooooooos.

As we were leaving, we saw a (what I presume to be a) woman in a burka rocking a child to sleep by the exit. As it was a bright sunny day, and the temperature was in the upper 70's, that could not have been comfortable.

Whether or not the burkas come to Europe is moot for us. They are here. Now.

Sure, in the US you can choose to live your life as you wish. So if you are a woman shackled to a mysogynistic culture that hates, devalues, and demeans you, you can choose to stick with it, or you can choose to better yourself and free yourself and your children.

The latter does not appear to be happening.

First they were offended by the soles of a Nike sneaker, then they were offended by a movie made in Holland, then they were offended by a big concrete teapot in Malaysia, then they were offended by a book written in Denmark, now their offended by the cap on an ice cream cone. And when they're offended, the Muslims always get what they want.

They get it because it's much easier to give in than to stand up to the bullying and the threats and the violence. So we might as well stop complaining, because it's going to keep happening.

Anybody out there brave/crazy enough to do one of those throbbing (sorry) transparent-image thingies?

Or would that lead to instant global hysteria, followed by marches, fatwas, and mass violent death?

Yeah. One has to do with non-sectarian ersatz ice cream, the other with the site where several hundred innocent lives were snuffed out by a cabal of bastards who, if they were still alive, and not in hell, would take one look at the proposed memorial design and salute smartly.

The parallels are indeed staggering.

In northern California, there was quite a to-do about an accusation that a human finger showed up in someone's chili at a San Jose Wendy's. Despite losing a lot of business because of the bad publicity, Wendy's hung tough and didn't go for the quick and dirty payoff.

As it turned out, the finger chomper was a long-time filer of fake lawsuits, and had cooked up the scheme with her lowlife boyfriend. Now the two are facing serious prison time.

Finger suspects plead guilty

BK would have been wise to similarly avoid the easy way out and stand up for reason. Instead, they have shown themselves to be shakedown bait and will have to live with the consequences.

Achievements is relative ...

... such as removing money from the poor to please the corrupt ...

... such as hitting a milestone of 100 resolutions per year on Israel and less than 10 on matters of grave importance to the world

... such as allowing/enabling/encouraging exploitation of the weak through its pseudomilitary outreach program

... such as keeping an entire group stateless for 57 years rather than resettling them like all the other solutions to conflicts in the world that wound up with displaced people.

... such as enabling those bastions of human rights, China, Libya, and Sudan to sit on the human rights commission while kicking out that monster, the US, that insists on treating people humanely

... insert your own

You get the idea. Lets laud these fine achievements. Lets celebrate the millions of people that these folks affected. Lets hand them over to said millions.

If they can force their will over a couple of squiggly lines, then they can get us to do just about anything. You can find some squiggly lines all over the place.

How about standing up to them and saying - hey it looks like a damn ice cream cone. Now maybe your God looks like some ice cream, or maybe your God is appearing in an ice cream as some sort of miracle, but an ice cream is an ice cream is an ice cream, and get over it. Never ate BK anyway but then I'm vegetarian. I do however consider it the best jihad.

OT Iraqis have approved their constitution. I don't know how similar it is to the version we last saw. link

Among the other killings reported in today's news twenty bodies were found dumped in the Tigris, and according to a Debka headline (as yet without a report) they may include politicians.

His daughter is a professional photographer? Any chance the daughter is...Wendy?!

It is probable as you suggest that the Maoist allusion was intentional. I have to say it left a deep impression on me. I've only seen it in one place--a Wendy's in a small town in Ohio that I would pass through on my way to college. I always made a point to patronize that Wendy's, each time coming up with a way to smuggle the painting out. I had enlisted an accomplice and fully intended to do it my last time through there, after I graduated. I balked. Now I look up at an empty slab of wall where that painting should hang, and sigh.

Don't know, but I've seen Muslim websites in which they brag about "fooling kafirs". Don't think this ain't a game to them. That's the point I wish more people would see, one most of us here probably get. This is cultural jihad, the necessary victory, in the ultimate war, against the west. This is the one they are pitching their tents on. I hope this becomes the subject of Robert Spencer's next book. He's got the big audience now. I have feeling I don't even have to float that one. This one just keeps writing itself.

(4+3) 7 Repetition
(4x3) 12 Apostles

This conspiracy stuff is fun!

Why are the Egyptian Pyramids still intact in Muslim-dominated Egypt? The pyramids are grave sites. Aren't tombs taboo in Islam? Aren't representations of the human form anti-Islamic? So, the pictures of ancient Egyptians drawn on the pyramid walls are also anti-Islamic. Why weren't they destroyed by the Muslim Egyptians? King Tut's sarcophagus is a representation of the human form. Why haven't Muslim Egyptians destroyed that?

Waging jihad on an ice cream swirl while leaving the Egyptian pyramids alone. That's so hypocritical.

Well I guess you were right;

And now I'm here in Canyon Lake alone.

And it helped you sort out the peices on your own.

And I'm seeing what you saw.
The springtime is beautiful;
I'm proud to call this country home.
Yeah, but I am missin' you,
as the sun is setting on me;
I think I'll crank up my pickup for San Antone.

Chorus:
And there ain't enough dance halls in Texas
To keep my heart and mind occupied
I'm tryin' all the time.
I'm out there every night;
My truck has seen some miles
to find the words to write this song
to get me (pause) back on top where I belong.
If I'm not over you yet I must be (dunt dunt)

Shouldn't this 'manifestation' be filed under "Miracles of Allah"? Like the tsunami 'signature' in waves that many muslims proudly exhibited on their websites?

But of course, the tsunami was a natural atrocity that killed vast numbers of people; it would be just like Allah to use such a medium to glorify his name; but to suggest that he would manifest his sig on an ice cream package....well that would be a truly monstrous insult!

234 Jimmah  Sun, Sep 18, 2005 5:29:10pm

On face value, what you say is correct.

However, assuming the motifs are overly similar, Burger King made an honest mistake and offered to make it right.

Despite this, the complainant threatened to continue his "Jihad" even after they removed the 'offending' insignia.

He was not satisfied by the decision to withdraw the cones and has called on Muslims to boycott Burger King. He said: “This is my jihad. "

This is the problem, not fussiness over symbols. Burger King were reasonable, he simply wasn't.

266 flipflop  Mon, Sep 19, 2005 3:23:01am

A few years back, a Washington, DC city employee was talking with some colleagues after a budget meeting during which his budget was reduced. He stated that they'd "have to be niggardly" with their spending.

A few black colleagues took great offense at his choice of words and created an uproar, after which the offending employee offered his resignation. Mayor Anthony Williams, who by the way is black, to his great credit refused the resignation and subtly suggested that those offended should buy a dictionary.

This Burger King story is the same kind of thing, and would be hilarious if the implications weren't so ominous in what it portends for the future.

How about this: the very fact that this jerk is offended offends ME?

That's because Catholics and pretty much every non-Islamic religion in the 21st century, don't frequently resort to physical violence when their religious feelings are offended.

The other factor is that the left is against the West, and Christianity has been the formative influences on Western civilization. Islam is non-Western and thus must receive special sensitivity.

Thus we can narrow down the leftist double standard regarding the need to respect Islamic sensibilities, but not Christian religious sensibilities to cowardice, adolescent rebellion, and self-loathing.

I would have no difficulty respecting Islamic religious sensiblities, but would insist that this respect be reciprocated.

, incredibly, or maybe not so:

Support for the Occupied Palestine Uprising (Intifada). In response to the call of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Herfy lent its support to the Intifada. Using the slogan “Support the Heroes of Jerusalem,” Herfy donated 10 percent of its income from Herfy kiddie meals for over one month to the martyrs of the Intifada and to the so-called “children of the stone” who stood up to the occupation. Herfy considers it a sacred Arab duty to help resist the occupation of Islam’s holiest places and stop the killing of oppressed Palestinian Arabs. In addition, Herfy also contributed SR 25,000 plus a donation from all Herfy staff equal to a one-day salary.
