Yes, I understand.

I have heard the term "Death Cult" used in academic discourse.

A more elaborate explanation involves the belief, particularly strong among Palestinian Muslims, that the 'sweat' on the corpse is a sign of how hard the deceased is working out there in Paradise trying to please those 72 virgins.

I doubt there's much opposition here to the statement that the targeted killing of terrorist leaders and 'engineers' works.

However, there is more to *why* it works than just that the bastards are forced to run and hide.

See:

Fighting New Terror - Theory And Israeli Experience

The short answer is that if you can take out about 12% of the key components of a system the system collapses.

The real trick is knowing who or what those key components are, which is the job of intelligence.

The method works best when it is applied outside any kind of 'cycle of violence'. Forget about retaliation. Just develop and distribute to the field commanders a list of the key personnel, give them the resources they need and the freedom to capture or kill those people whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Gaza is perfectly described in the film "Escape from New York". In the movie, Manhattan is a giant penal colony, sealed off from the rest of the world, with constant gang warfare raging within.

As for Gaza, the cordon sanitaire will be made tighter still by Israel. Egypt will follow suit, since the Palis devour their own. They snap and bite at anything that moves, just like their closest analog in the animal kingdom, rabid dogs.

No rational beings will dare set foot in their self-confected 'earthly paradise', including the cowardly and useless UN.

The West will continue with its misguided philanthropy, but being somewhat wiser, will deliver whatever aid via parachute drops.

The slaughter will continue and eventually there will be no one left. Since this is all but inevitable, may it happen sooner rather than later.

Leaflets currently being dropped on Gaza state:

"Hamas fires Kassam rockets at Israeli citizens in order to cover up their responsibility for the killing of Palestinians in the parade in Jabaliya. Hamas serving its own interests has resorted to systematic lies that will harm you and drag you once again in to despair and destruction, and has resulted in a closure on the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian Authority is responsible and must act immediately to stop the Kassam rocket attacks emanating from areas under its control and dismantle the infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces will act harshly against anyone who threatens the security of its citizens."

Rawad Farhat in 2002...
Profile: Israeli Military Operation in Gaza

KENYON: In the Zaytoon neighborhood, 14-year-old Rawad Farhat(ph) shows visitors the ruins of his bedroom, which he used to share with his brother Mohammad(ph), who was killed after murdering five Israeli teen-agers in a Jewish settlement in March. Rawad says last night, the family, 20 people in all, left the building before two Israeli tank shells rendered it uninhabitable.

RAWAD FARHAT (Palestinian): (Through Translator) I would like to send a message to Sharon, telling him that we are not afraid of you. We are not afraid of your tanks or your planes.

Rawad Farhat today...

Pic...Usual Warning

The mother of Rawad Farhat, 17, a Hamas militant who was killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza, mourns over his body during his funeral in Gaza City, 24 September 2005. A total of eight Israeli air strikes pounded the Gaza Strip on Saturday in response to some 34 Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel that have injured five people.

Seems like Rawad's big brother Mohammad was a good role model for him. Whoever looked up to Rawad will suffer the same fate. And so on...

It's seems like it's all coming unravelled..
PA, Hamas argue over blast

The ruling Fatah party issued a statement in Gaza City condemning Hamas for holding paramilitary rallies in residential areas. "This rally was held despite our warnings to refrain from displaying and storing weapons in residential areas," the statement said. "The Fatah Central Committee holds Hamas fully responsible for the deaths that occurred during the military rally [in Jabalya]."

However, other Fatah groups in the Gaza Strip rejected the charges against Hamas and accused Israel of standing behind the explosion. In addition, Fatah's armed wing, Aksa Martyrs Brigades, distributed leaflets accusing PA Interior Ministry Gen. Nasser Youssef, who is in charge of security, of "high treason and collusion" with Israel. "It's clear to us that Israel is behind the massacre in Jabalya and our response will be painful," the group said.

I think we might be seeing all out civil war soon.

Gaza needs a good dose of Shariah. Some people simply deserve Islam.

I have trouble thinking that way ever since I argued with some Islamic fanatic. He responded to criticism of Sharia by saying that we all deserved to be chopped up with machetes. Or to be precise, some of the people talking were Isrealis, and our holy man told us that he fantasized about Nigerian mobs massacring all of Israel and killing ever last Jew with mechetes.

If Sharia turned him into a monster, I don't think Israel needs more Sharia on it's borders.

I think this is the current martyr payment...
Suicide bombers supported by Arab Bank

If the terrorist were successful, the family would receive $5,316; being wounded or captured would earn them a lesser amount.

Though small by Western standards, the payments are more than six times the West Bank's average annual income of $850.

So that's $25,000 from Saddam for Mohamed(#55) and $5,316 from the bank for Rawad. That makes $30,316 in the west Bank where the average annual income is $850! His family is quite wealthy.

69 Gringo  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 10:48:28am

The more I think about it, the more I realize how really worthless these paleos are. If you consider it, we don't even have a word in English that describes them. I don't want to call them "people," because that assumes or at least suggests, that they're human. So, are they a lower form of humanity? Can we describe a form that low as even being human? I mean, let's face it, if you analyze them and their behavior, and what effect they have on the world around them, you'd be forced to describe them as a virus. Think about it, are they really any different than SARS or AIDS? In order to keep themselves alive and procreate, these viruses destroy everything around them, they destroy their hosts...human beings, and are of no benefit whatsoever to anyone or anything execept themselves.

Doesn't that exactly describe Palistinians?

74 Ilan Toren  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:06:27am

The car swarm is just cheap entertainment.. After Israel's retreat in face of Hamas terror any highlighting of Arab primitivism is engaging in escapism. We let them arm, we refuse to confront them except with little symbolic actions (like how big a set back will the loss of 4 gunmen cause?), then point our fingers and go back to the routine.

I'm sure that at some level they are more pleased than hurt by these things. A car swarm is the best recruitment tool they have. They need bus swarms before they start to realize that they are facing a losing proposition.

75 Condor  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:06:52am

Meanwhile, the 'ceasefire' continues.

Hamas has only fired 41 rockets at Israel since Friday, and wounded only 12 Israelis.

We should warn Israel not to try and strike back, since that would surely "break" the ceasefire, and be an escalation in the violence.

77 DocMartyn  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:09:01am

Two points.
Firstly.
The IDF has started to bring up its artillary. At the moment it is just there so that the media can report it and the jordgyptians (they deserve a lower case) know its there. The difference between an home-made rocket and a 155 mm anti-personel round is the difference between a motor bike and a tank. The thing is these are more accurate and cheaper than bombs and you can deliver them without putting your pilots or aircraft at risk. They will have to start moving away from helicopters. Even the best attack helicopters are venerable to SAM's, and these mother-fuckers have those. They will be able to saturate a half mile square area for little cost ($500,000).

Secondly.
We will soon see a civil war in Gaza. I hope that the psicorp is writing the pamphlets and saturation the airwaves. The PA and Hamas are competing for hearts and minds, and also to establish a revolutionary terror mindset in the peoples minds, so beloved of Marxsists and Moeists. They will fight Israel and each other. Gaza is too small for both groups to co-exist.
My guess is that the PFLP (general command), is going to get hit first. Hamas will hit it because its an armed rival, with Allah replaced by Marx (so they are Apostales). This will show Hamas is tough. The PA will wack them and tell the UN e.t.c. that they are putting down armed groups. The final showdown will be between hamas and the PLO. That will be interesting.

78 saltmarsh  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:15:33am

I quite agree with you.

Even here in the USA saying what is on your mind can make life unpleasant, but in Gaza or other muslim dominated areas of the world saying something like Islam is a perfidious pigshit cult or the jews have a right to live in peace would be an immediate death sentence.

80 Condor  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:17:53am

"The final showdown will be between hamas and the PLO."

I actually think that Hamas probably has more popular support, since the people know that the PLO is notoriously corrupt. And I think the PLO armed forces probably fear Hamas, and might choose not to face them in open combat (for fear of retaliation later).

So, if the showdown comes, Hamas might just end up ruling the West Bank--another unelected Taliban, promising (and delivering) honesty in government;
sharia law, strictly enforced (floggings, veils, no satellite TV, men must have beards, stonings);
struggle (whether political or military) for the complete anihilation of Israel, and Jews.

In the short run it would make for a "stronger" Palestine, militarily. In the long
run it will make the Palestinians despise Hamas, and possibly all radicals.

Meanwhile, the Afghans and Iraqis will be enjoying free elections, a free press, etc.

Cabinet okays territories closure, assassinations

In a meeting convened by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Saturday evening, the security cabinet approved defense plans in response to the Qassam rocket offensive against western Negev towns over the weekend.

Officials who took part in the meeting said that operations that will be undertaken in the coming hours and days are designed to ensure that the rocket fire will not be repeated.

In the initial stage, the army will resume targeted killings and indefinitely seal off the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

May Hashem watch over our boys.

U.K. group renews boycott attempts against Israeli academics

"The boycott is moving on, extremely well judged by the amount of support coming into us and the willingness of universities to set up meetings to discuss it," Dr Hilary Rose, supporter of the boycott and one of the founders of Bricup, told the English daily The Guardian.

I'm going to censor myself because my response to this is not ladylike at all. Savages.

I'm skeptical at how effective Israel will be at stopping the rockets without a MAJOR air offensive followed by a land offensive.

Sharon may find such a strategy, if implemented immediately, beneficial to the Likud vote on Monday, but will his coalition partners (Labor) allow it?

90 zulubaby  Sat, Sep 24, 2005 11:58:06am

amir, if they've called the soldiers back, something must be going down. Feeling very anxious about it all, but I do trust the IDF. I must go to bed so I'm going to say goodnight. I'll check back in the morning. Night guys.

Think about it. Does Charles have the time to monitor all threads, all of the time? When he starts 4 or 5 or 6 within 10 minutes, he can't. There is a huge random element to what gets noticed, and what doesn't. And just because you or me or anyone else says something in no way guarantees that he will see it. You're being completely unrealistic if you think that you can just rub the bottle and Charles will magically appear.

Israeel Launches Airstrikes Against Hamas

from the ASSociated Press:

Israel launched a "crushing" retaliation Saturday against Hamas in the Gaza Strip with deadly airstrikes and troops massed at the border, after militants fired 35 rockets at Israeli towns...

then later:

But the latest bloodshed appeared to put Hamas on the defensive.

Here we go again.

Israel was "encouraged" (what a understatement) to do this last action, dragging Jews out of their homes, AND....(Im sure most of the American PEOPLE are SHOCKED at the outcome) So who is responsible?

And when will Israel be PRESSURED to stop in their latest offensive?

For G-d sakes..We are into the Alphabet Organization "game" again. And whoever wins, it will be the same damn thing. From "we have to talk with the "enemies" to "they have a Charitable Wing" or (wait six months or so and train the new guys what NOT to say) and "theve CHANGED". SO SICK OF THIS.

Something I didn't understand was going to happen before the Gaza pullout was that Israel was going to stop patolling the buffer between Gaza and Egypt. Which means that the Egyptians are going to have to protect their own border.

The randomly unpredictable targetted killings will have the effect of sowing terror among the palestinian civilians, and my prediction is that they are going to flee into Egypt. And quite a few will get across before the Egyptians acquire the political will and operational competence to stop them. Of course it will not be a random sample of palestinians -- it will be the ones who just want to be normal people ho scramble for the exits hardest. Which of course will get them out of the way of getting hurt from collateral damage from Israeli attacks.

Maybe they'll take the UNHCR with them, eh? (A gal can hope...)

This 12% (or similar size) is an indication that the terrorist networks are in a class called "scale free" networks. In a scale free network, you can take out enough critical spokes, and the puppy will pretty much stop. Depending upon a number of things (called critical exponents and other names), you can carefully chose targets and cause a general collapse. Had Israel been able to take out Arafat and a few others, the PA and its fellow travelers would have passed into anarchy.

Much as they are doing now.

12% sounds high. Most scale free network attacks work when you attack far less than 1% of the components. If it takes 12% then either you are hitting the wrong components, or the network is not scale-free, and is actually a different type of network. This implies a very different attack strategy.

You can see the effect of other scale free networks (such as transportation networks, as measured by transportation throughput) in the evacuation of people from Houston for Rita.

The idea with such a network is that very few nodes control a great many things. Take out enough nodes or linkages, and signifcant chunks of the network come crashing down.

Can we question his patriotism now?

Dr. Yossi Beilin, head of the left-wing Meretz-Yahad Party addressed a Saturday night rally in Jerusalem’s Paris Square, calling on the government “not to fall into Hamas’ trap,” calling on Israel to resume negotiations with the Palestinian Authority (PA).

Beilin was referring to a Sabbath accompanied by Kassam rocket attacks into Sderot and western Negev areas which led to injuries and property damage. Hamas has threatened to strike out hard at Israel and the Security Cabinet is meeting on Saturday night to weigh possible responses.

Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has indicated a major ground incursion is not being ruled out at this time.

An address made in Ramallah by PA leader Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) was aired at the left-wing Jerusalem rally as well.

Can't wait for the rail line to be built so we can run him out on it.

Gaza is perfectly described in the film "Escape from New York". In the movie, Manhattan is a giant penal colony, sealed off from the rest of the world, with constant gang warfare raging within

The final showdown will be between hamas and the PLO. That will be interesting.

There are two fights in the making: one between Fatah and Hamas, and one within Fatah itself.

In an inter-Fatah fight, Farouk Kaddoumi and his Iranian/Hezbollah buddies would move to control the PLO, but not everyone's on board with that. In this scenario, Kaddoumi is likely to win thanks to his support from the al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades, Hezbollah and his new 'army'. Hamas may even assist him. The result would be a Hamas/Hezbollah/Iran front against Israel.

Some might say that this means keeping Abbas, et al, alive - and even strengthening him, is in Israel's interest. Bullshit - it simply means that there is a longer list of jihadis to kill.

It gets more incredible:

Mr. Farhad's mother, known as Um Nidal, said all three of her sons have been killed in fighting with the Israelis. "I am so proud," she said. "I wish I had more sons to offer."

In any other civilization, we'd term this a psychopathy. A result of cousin marriage, perhaps?

Um Nidal, the "mother of martyrs"

Mariam Farhat, age 55, certainly the woman with the greatest fortitude of all of Gaza and all of Palestine. Mariam declares that she is willing to sacrifice all her children for the battle against Israel. She states that she would sacrifice all her children to fight and defeat the Israelis, giving her approval for all of them to sacrifice themselves for the Palestinian cause. The woman is absolutely convinced of her idea and her gaze is deep and determined. Mariam today is known to everyone by the name "Um Nidal" which means "mother of Nidal". Nidal was the name of one of her first two sons who sacrificed their lives for the Palestinian cause. He was 32 years old and had six children when he died...

Palestinian Double-Talk: Professor Sari Nusseibeh

Um Nidal, the mother of the Hamas terrorist Muhammad Farkhat who entered the Israeli village of Atzmona on March 3, 2002 and murdered seven Israelis. His mother Um Nidal encouraged her son to commit the suicide mission and also appeared in a farewell video on the eve of the attack, where she sends her son to his death.

Um Nidal

The very act of participating in an interview with both a Hamas leader, who defends and explains his procedures in choosing suicide bombers, and the mother of the suicide terrorist who killed 5 teenagers, without distancing himself from the hatred he heard, lends his approval to mass murderers

That post doesn't cross the line for me. I have a pretty high threshold.

My point has never been that I'm personally offended but that an unpoliced comment section limits the blog's audience and influence.
