Demonizing Condoleezza

Wed, Oct 26, 2005 at 2:29:45 pm PDT

Today is the day of the doctored photo; Michelle Malkin notes a USA Today article with a photo of Condoleezza Rice that was altered, apparently to make her look demonic.

UPDATE at 10/26/05 2:31:45 pm:

Originally discovered by FromThePen.com.

UPDATE at 10/26/05 2:34:26 pm:

The doctored photo has been removed from USATODAY.com, and a weak non-apology added:

Editor’s note: The photo of Condoleezza Rice that originally accompanied this story was altered in a manner that did not meet USA TODAY’s editorial standards. The photo has been replaced by a properly adjusted copy. Photos published online are routinely cropped for size and adjusted for brightness and sharpness to optimize their appearance. In this case, after sharpening the photo for clarity, the editor brightened a portion of Rice’s face, giving her eyes an unnatural appearance. This resulted in a distortion of the original not in keeping with our editorial standards.

I've been laughing about this all morning. A classic!

Reminds me of the scene in The Simpsons when they televise the debate between Mayor Quimby and Sideshow Bob, and the TV shows hell-flames swirling around Quimby, with a little notice at the bottom, "Flames added for effect."

HAHAHAHAH! I replayed that scene in my head and couldn't help but bust a gut.

I work as a web dveloper/designer and there is no way that sharpening an image will do that. The lemming basically blew up the image, narrowed her eyes with white pixels and filled in the rest with a white penil tool.

I just re-produced the exact, friggin pic and it took me all of 45 seconds.

Tards.

11 Maine's Michael  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 12:35:54pm

Well, some think the photo was doctored to make her look demonic. I happen to think it makes her look more clear-eyed.

Or perhaps a little hyperthyroid.

Too bad she actually IS demonic, as is the rest of the state department, when it comes to, well, just about everything.

12 Maine's Michael  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 12:36:21pm

Now, Michel Malkin, on the other hand, definitely DOES NOT look demonic.

I'm not playing Devil's Advocate here, but I don't think we ought to get our knickers in a twist about this. Is it possible that they were trying to increase contrast for the print edition, and ended up using the "sharpened" photo online instead of the original?

If they had altered her features, or changed her facial expression to something it wasn't, I'd be pissed off. But my sense is that there isn't malevolent intent here, and we'd do well to let this one slide.

I routinely crop, adjust for brightness, and sharpen all images before I post them too. That's standard operating procedure, using an artist's artful eye for what improves the quality of the image. Causing the subject's eyes to virtually pop out of her head zombie-like flunks that part of the test.

The doctored photo looks darker and richer than the original (or maybe that's my Folger's) -- is it possible that made her eyes too dark and they tried clumsily to clarify them? Maybe the photographers are gone off with the editors this week, and the janitor or someone got the photo-editing job.

Just sayin'...

44 Honzik  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 12:50:00pm

Do you remember how badly the MSM got their noses out of joint when a Republican political commerical had a graphic that for 1/15 of a second emphasized the word RAT in Democrat? That seemed to occupy the front page for days.

Now, an "unbiased" news organization does something much worse and the MSM yawns. Why is it worse? Because the former was a partisan commercial with an expectiation of partisan bias, while the latter was presented as unbiased news, which despite declarations to the contrary, was obviously done for partisan gain.

45 Powderfinger  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 12:50:22pm

Viewing with photo software and putting the two photos side by side[the doctored one is of lower resolution] it appears like the pixels of the eyes were doctored individually. I don't think it was just shading of the whole picture that did it.

The algorithms neccessary to analyzed if this is the case numerically, is complicated by the difference in resolution. By eye there is no change of shade for anything except the white of her eyes.

65 jehu  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 12:58:29pm

In this case, after sharpening the photo for clarity, the editor brightened a portion of Rice's face, giving her eyes an unnatural appearance.

Just as in Watergate and Monicagate, the coverup of the scandal is going to end up being worse than the original scandal.

The Photoshop job is an obvious intentional vilification of the Secretary of State. USAToday shoiuld have owned up to it and said, "Yeah, someone in the office doctored the photo to make her look evil, and an editor approved of it. Both have been fired. We apologize and admit being caught."

But by publishing the transparent LIES in their so-called apology, they are implicating the entire editorial board. They have no way to say they "were unaware" of the problem, or whatever. The top brass were notified of it, and then they LIED to cover it up.

Heads must roll.

Improve composition, as in make it appear the americans were pointing guns at the civilians.
(spit)

[Link: www.sree.net...]

n Monday, March 31, the Los Angeles Times published a front-page photograph that had been altered in violation of Times policy.

The primary subject of the photo was a British soldier directing Iraqi civilians to take cover from Iraqi fire on the outskirts of Basra. After publication, it was noticed that several civilians in the background appear twice. The photographer, Brian Walski, reached by telephone in southern Iraq, acknowledged that he had used his computer to combine elements of two photographs, taken moments apart, in order to improve the composition.

Times policy forbids altering the content of news photographs. Because of the violation, Walski, a Times photographer since 1998, has been dismissed from the staff. The altered photo, along with the two photos that were used to produce it, are below:

78 Merovign  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 1:08:43pm

Obviously someone on their staff has been reading/watching too much David Icke stuff - was trying to make her look like she was a reptilian alien.

It was obviously deliberate, they narrowed her iris (irises? Irisis? Iris'?) and made them angled instead of round.

It was either a childish, petulant slap, or a truly paranoid delusional mindgame.

And the editors lied in their note.

Were I an editor, I would fire the person responsible because of the damage they caused the organization, whatever their motivation.

Irans President has called for Israel to be "wiped off the map"

The fucking scumbag. Time to take these fuckers out.

Iran leader's words 'sicken' UK

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for Israel to be 'wiped off the map'

The UK Foreign Office is to summon a senior Iranian diplomat to protest against his president's comments about destroying Israel. Hardliner Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called for the Jewish state to be "wiped off the map".
The Foreign Office will call in Iran's London chargé d'affaires on Thursday. It said the comments were "deeply disturbing and sickening".

The remarks have heightened concerns over Iran's nuclear intentions. 'Horrible reality'
At least five people were killed in what police say was a suicide bomb attack in northern Israel on Wednesday.
An FO spokesman said this showed "the horrible reality of the violence he [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] is praising".
Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom has said Iran is regarded as "a clear and present danger".

He said it was clear that Iran was trying to develop a programme to make nuclear weapons.
Iran denies this, but insists it has the right to pursue a civilian nuclear programme for peaceful purposes.
At least five people died and up to were 30 wounded in the bomb attack near a market place in Hadera, northern Israel.

The Palestinian Islamic Jihad group said it carried out the attack in revenge for Israel's killing of its senior leader, Luay Saadi, on Monday.

John Kerry* gave a speech at Georgetown University today, in which he offered the following brilliant insights on Iraq:

"When they [the Bush administration] could have listened to General Shinseki and put in enough troops to maintain order, they chose not to. They were wrong."

"General George Casey, our top military commander in Iraq, recently told Congress that our large military presence 'feeds the notion of occupation' and 'extends the amount of time that it will take for Iraqi security forces to become self-reliant.' . . . It is essential to acknowledge that the insurgency will not be defeated unless our troop levels are drawn down."

Apparently Kerry was for more troops before he was against it.

... CBS version of Sandy Berger Cops a Plea ...
with this little justification at the end for breaking federal law

Many Democrats, including former President Clinton, suggested politics were behind disclosure of the probe only days before the release of the Sept. 11 commission report, which Republicans feared would be a blow to President Bush's re-election campaign.

Berger acknowledged to U.S. Magistrate Deborah Robinson that he intentionally took and deliberately destroyed three copies of the same document dealing with terror threats during the 2000 millennium (search) celebration. He then lied about it to Archives staff when they told him the documents were missing.

"Guilty, your honor," Berger responded ...

Fox news version had MORE information in less space however ...

For months, he called it an honest mistake.

But on Friday, Sandy Berger (search) pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in federal court. Berger, who served as President Clinton's national security adviser, is acknowledging that it wasn't an honest mistake and that he intentionally took and destroyed copies of classified documents from the National Archives (search) and cut them up with scissors.

orwell was right:

What happened in the unseen labyrinth to which the pneumatic tubes led, he did not know in detail, but he did know in general terms. As soon as all the corrections which happened to be necessary in any particular number of The Times had been assembled and collated, that number would be reprinted, the original copy destroyed, and the corrected copy placed on the files in its stead. This process of continuous alteration was applied not only to newspapers, but to books, periodicals, pamphlets, posters, leaflets, films, sound-tracks, cartoons, photographs -- to every kind of literature or documentation which might conceivably hold any political or ideological significance. Day by day and almost minute by minute the past was brought up to date. In this way every prediction made by the Party could be shown by documentary evidence to have been correct, nor was any item of news, or any expression of opinion, which conflicted with the needs of the moment, ever allowed to remain on record. All history was a palimpsest, scraped clean and reinscribed exactly as often as was necessary. In no case would it have been possible, once the deed was done, to prove that any falsification had taken place. The largest section of the Records Department, far larger than the one on which Winston worked, consisted simply of persons whose duty it was to track down and collect all copies of books, newspapers, and other documents which had been superseded and were due for destruction. A number of The Times which might, because of changes in political alignment, or mistaken prophecies uttered by Big Brother, have been rewritten a dozen times still stood on the files bearing its original date, and no other copy existed to contradict it.

The fact that the USA Today editors got caught and

I think it is still part of the fear of the MSM and being rejected or being cast as a radical. I find the stance of Bill O'Reilly informative. He strives to position himself as the "guy in the middle." So he uses Ann Coulter as his right parenthesis, and Al Franken as his left parenthesis. Manufacturing a dynamic that does not even exist. Franken is a propgandist and a liar.

The MSM, even though it is false, holds the high ground of legitimacy. Tis why the NYT, even though for decades a corrupt tool of the left, which did not report Stalin's purges and genocides is still the "Paper of Record."

Why Nobel Peace Prizes are still "valued," when they are given to terrorists, or terrorists apolgizers. The truth is hard to take, and humanity generally violently kills its prophets. So to avoid immediate crucifixtion, those that fight the machine think to piggyback on its manufactured "legitimacy." Maybe they think once upon the beast they can stab it in the neck while along for the ride. My observation is it tends to turn and pluck the riders from its back and have them as a snack now and then.

***Alien*** When they going to annotate antennae on top of her head? Would look more lifelike than that! Looks like something a 3rd grader would have done.

Reminds me of the days before Photoshop when my brother-in-law took all of his pictures at a wedding with his eyes closed and they "drew" in eyes with a pencil. I laugh 20 years later when I look at the pics.

Of course, what passes for news at the progressive rag called USA Today seems to be written by one of those advanced placement sixth grade classes (from a public school).

182 EE  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 3:04:23pm

If the photo editor of USA Today did not notice what was done to the photo, or if he thinks that it was a minor change that was done in doctoring the photo to make her eyes unnatural and demonic, he should be given a seeing eye dog and a position more suitable to his disability.

I am all in favor of jobs for people with disabilities. Blind people deserve to get suitable employment, but being photo editor is not appropriate for someone who is blind, as this photo editor apparently is. Or else he can really see, and he is a dishonest political hack and a liar.

Yep...Kerry is neurosis defined;

Although the Cambodia and the CIA hat episode, does indicate a 'psychotic symptom'.

Jury Faults Port Authority in '93 WTC Bomb

The Port Authority? Not the murderous fanatics who actually did it?

The six-person jury ruled that the Port Authority, the agency that owned the World Trade Center, was negligent by not properly maintaining the parking garage, where terrorists detonated more than a half-ton of explosives in a Ryder van. It said the negligence was a "substantial factor" in the allowing the bombing to occur.

Headline:

White House on Edge in CIA Leak Case

Article:

if Karl Rove, one presidential adviser entangled in the case, was feeling nervous, he was not showing it.
Both Rove and Libby, who has been on crutches after breaking a foot, attended the daily senior staff meeting, but people in the room said they did not show any anxiety. There is a lot of tension in the West Wing, but staff members are not talking about what's happening, a senior administration official said, adding that President Bush wasn't showing signs of tension either.

No, really, WTF'nF!?!? You run a headline like that and don't give a single example to back it up? And all the examples you give are exactly the opposite?

I used to work at USA Today - 1988 thru 1991. As a software developer, nothing to do with the product itself (altho' if any of you have been incorrectly billed for your subscription, it's probably my fault - which is why my email is not appearing with this post).

Some of you may not know that USA Today is the flagship paper of Gannett, Inc. Long story short-altho it's been awhile, and I'm sure things have changed, the culture of the paper I knew then was pretty good, the fact that most reporters are scum notwithstanding. (If any of you know who Cathy Black is - she is every bit as cool as you would want and could blow most of us here out of the water, myself included.)

I'm not defending this. All I'm saying is that this did not NECESSARILY come from USA Today, but possibly from one of its Gannett subsidiaries.

Now back to ice the ankle. Sprains. Just. Suck.

If you read Newsweek Newsweak (my subscription hasn't expired yet) like I do you'd know it is more than photoshopping pictures. Truth-wise, Newsweak has been off the reservation since sometime last summer, and has been in hyper-drive since Katrina. The new issue suggests holding the 2008 DNC in New Orleans to remind voters "of the failure of the Republican administration to come to their aid". Valerie Plame was a real life female James Bond, whose very life depended on her secret identity as she battled foes determined to exterminate mankind and repopulate the Earth with a master-race of amphibious humans (minor hyperbole on my part) and all her work was destroyed by a vengeful Dick Cheney, Karl Rove and Scooter Libby.

Switching between the Big 3 nets for the evening news, it isn't much better. Demonrat controlled teachers unions aim to indoctrinate and dumb down the youth of this country, so they'll grow up accepting this bullsh!t.

It is rather scary, really.

I let my subscription to Time run out a couple of years ago and they didn't take non-renewal too well back then. I wouldn't know about them now...except that I occasionally run across a valuable article online in Time Asia, like this one.

...Vanity, thy name is ... man. The ranks of sartorially self-aware males are growing so fast in some Asian countries that they have become an identifiable social subspecies. In China, they are called the aimei nanren (love beauty men), fastidious fellows who are unafraid to spend a few hours in a beauty salon getting pedicures, pore packs and back waxes. Their counterparts in Korea are the kkotminam (flower men), club-hopping packs of primping fops who accessorize with designer bling and faux fur. "You can no longer pick out who's gay and who's straight," says Henry Wan, a Hong Kong clothing designer known for his flamboyant men's styles, "because their dress is no different now."

These flower men are not rare orchids. According to a survey conducted last year by leading South Korean advertising agency Cheil, roughly two out of three South Korean men say they have adopted androgynous characteristics and lifestyles, meaning they practice personal-care routines and indulge in fashions in ways once thought rather unmanly. "If I dressed like this in Toronto, my friends would laugh at me," admits Matthew Ko, a 21-year-old Chinese-Canadian, who on a recent night in Hong Kong was clad in a bright purple blazer over a psychedelic floral shirt offset by lime green pants. Granted, it was a special occasion. Ko was vying for the crown in the Mr. Hong Kong competition, one of several male beauty pageants that have sprung up around the region. And Ko, a doe-eyed, soft-spoken amateur pianist, won! Asked about his retina-searing duds, Ko shrugs. "The fashion trends just change faster in Asia." ...

You guys just need to try to get with it, OK?

TROPICAL DEPRESSION #26/FUTURE HURRICANE BETA ALERT

Future Tropical Depression #26/Tropical Storm Beta forming in S.W. Caribbean?

To quote the Tropical Prediction Center's 8 pm Atlantic Basin synoptic discussion:

...SPECIAL FEATURES...

A BROAD AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IS IN THE SW CARIBBEAN WITH A 1008 MB LOW ANALYZED NEAR 10N81W NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE NEARBY STATIONARY FRONT. PRESSURES ARE BEGINNING TO FALL IN THE AREA AND SATELLITE PICTURES INDICATE CURVED BANDS ARE BECOMING BETTER-DEFINED... ALL HALLMARKS OF DEVELOPMENT. TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS POSSIBLE WITHIN 36 HOURS. THIS SYSTEM SHOULD DRIFT NW WITH LIGHT STEERING FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
SCATTERED MODERATE TO ISOLATED STRONG CONVECTION IS NEAR THE CENTER FROM 9N-11N BETWEEN 80W-82W. SIMILAR CONVECTION IS FURTHER N FROM 12N-15N BETWEEN 78W-82W.

Now that Wilma sucked in and destroyed Alpha, and then became a cold core polar frontal low as cold dry air reached its center, upper level winds sheared the mid level center from the surface low, and cold waters robbed it of the most instense thunderstorms, the tropics are quiet. Now, theoretically future Beta could become a mighty hurricane if it stays in the Caribbean and doesn't move into Central America, but Wilma has ruined the Gulf for anything more than a minimal hurricane, by churning up cold water in the Southeast Gulf and then pulling in Arctic air (so cold and dry that the dewpoints in Havana were in the lower teens (50sF) yesterday. So, Beta could never threaten anywhere in the US but Florida, and only there as a Cat 1, maybe. So we can enjoy a smooth transition from Hurricane Season to Blizzard Season.

LBAR model says it would hit Miami in 4 days, but all other models suggest a trip across Central America. If it survived, it could perhaps regenerate as a Pacific Basin storm, although East Pac storms are rare this late in the year.

Just looking at the latest NHC tropical models just out, they are referring to it as "Tropical Depression #26" instead of "Tropical Depression Invest". This strongly suggests advisories will be issued in about an hour.

New 18Z GFDL very bullish, with a borderline Cat 3/Cat 4 hitting Nicaragua Saturday afternoon, then crossing Central America and emerging into the Pacific Monday, and then heading West through the Pacific. If I understand the NWS policy, if the storm remains a tropical cyclone during the crossing, as the GFDL suggests, it would keep the name "Beta", if it weakened below the limits of a tropical cyclone (as suggested by the latest Decay-SHIPS, which landfalls Beta just below the 64 knot limit of a hurricane, and loses the circulation entirely over land) and regenerated in the Pacific, it would get the next name on the Pacific storm name list.

If anybody wants to check for sure about naming policy, I believe it is in NWS Directive 10-601. I found it for you (PDF file, page 17) [Link: www.nws.noaa.gov...]

If a tropical cyclone crosses the dateline, it does not keep the name assigned by NHC or PNHC, it is given the next name due in the West Pac basin by RMSC Tokyo.

LOL!

Hubby is a swarthy man. Way darker than me. His mother is blonde. She's very, very fair as are his siblings. Go figure. Genetics can be strange.

Anyway, he's a manly man by personality. I have no use for sissified males.

I figure if we have to retreat to cave living in order to survive, I'd rather be with my hubby than an effete liberal asshole of the Ted Rall or John Kerry ilk.

Hope that makes sense.

269 Ed Mahmoud abu al Qahool Martyr Brigades  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 5:17:10pm

Avner-

In case you are sincere-

The low talent British techno-pop star Moby a few years back bragged that he liked to go online in Conservative chatrooms and plant stories that George Bush had forced a girlfriend to have an abortion. Since then, Moby refers to anybody who goes onto a blog and pretends to be something he isn't, to make the blog look ridiculous. At LGF, "Mobies" often talk about sand-n*****s, or killing all Arabs, or rounding up all the Muslims in America and putting them in extermination camps. The idea, it makes us look ridiculous.

Reaganite interpreted your comment as being far enough over the top that you could be a Moby. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and take a guess that English isn't your primary language, and your post was just poorly worded.

Jrdroll on the Rosa Park thread the other night had all the symptoms of a Moby.

270 mbabbitt  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 5:17:20pm

I wrote USA Today this morning and told them that their Photoshop game was a bit much and that when I was a liberal I would have unthinkingly accepted their news and their pictures. Now I know better. No punishment was metered out for this as it was supposedly just an innocent oversight. Who was this photo editor and how did this photo pass his or her review? If this person was a professional, it had to be on purpose as it is so obviously bad. And why Condi? Perhaps because she is a Republican?

271 Bob's Kid  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 5:17:23pm

Anybody who calls Bill Whittle an asshole is certainly an idiot. Anybody who would say "to hell with Rosa Parks" is certainly a Moby.

I am. Once I stopped taking the narcos for the pain, I perked right up. Just pissy that I have to take it easy for another week or so at least. Still can't drive, etc. I keep expecting to wake up in the morning and take off like I used to do, and it ain't that easy. But my body's not stupid...it reminds me that I need to stay slow, and forcefully. But ain't it great that they send people home so quickly after surgery? I got to go home Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours afterwards. I was so glad, too, as hospitals are not the place to get any rest, and my roommate had the TV on all night. Oy.

339 Bill K.  Wed, Oct 26, 2005 9:59:18pm

I never thought I'd pine for the days when Colin Powell was Secretary of State but Condi Rice is doing it. The policy differences between them is becoming slimmer by the day which is hardly odd because Rice has been going to Powell for advice.

Powell was once a decent general and in Desert Storm he commanded an army that killed tens of thousands of Iraqi soldiers in Kuwait. Even today his ruthless phrase We're going to cut them off and then we're going to kill them. refering to the Iraqi army still hangs about in the ether. This sort of power and ruthlessness commands a lot of respect in the Islamic world.

(Of course Powell sort of gave away the farm near the end of the war cutting the end short because he didn't want to be seen "piling on" the retreating Iraqi army. More than anything else this saved enough of Saddam's army to keep him in power for another 12 years.)

Now compare Powell's deportment with that of Rice's and her soul sister Karen Hughes.
Both women ascribe to the naive notion that the United States is just misunderstood in the Muslim world and all we have to do is be super nice to them, show the proper respect, and repeat that Islam is a religion of peace a million times and everything will be peachy.

Hughes is the worst of the two. In every picture of her recently she is grinning like an idiot, surrounded by smiling Muslim girls.
But the text indicates she is getting the same old ration of shit from them about why America is such an "oppressor".

Now this we "love and respect you" shit just doesn't cut it in the Muslim world. Condi and Karen, you're not in Kansas any more. You're dealing with a 12th century mentality here. Think Alexander the Great and you'd be getting warmer.

340 TMF  Thu, Oct 27, 2005 3:37:20am

Someone's been studying their Goebbels.

Ironic that the left and their MSM cohorts like to throw the 3rd reich analogies around in referring to the Bush admin

when IN FACT it is THEY who use tactics most similiar to the nefarious propaganda of the Nazis.

SIck, demented, ahistorical, fucked up beyond belief.

This is the type of shit that got 6 million Jews gassed.
