Muslim Students Shut Down Exhibit at Harper College

Fri, Oct 28, 2005 at 8:57:24 pm PDT

When Muslim students at a community college in Illinois complained about an art exhibit that criticized the repressive symbol of radical Islam known as the hijab, the school promptly removed the offending artwork. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

An art exhibit that included photographs of nude Muslim women wearing only a head covering was taken down Thursday afternoon just hours after opening for public viewing at Harper College in Palatine.

Muslim students at the college protested to officials about the pieces on display in Building C. Several students say the pieces — some showing young Muslim men with machine guns — were downright offensive.

“I think they should rip this down,” student Matt George said.

Another student, Hussein Ali, says a number of Muslim students at Harper now are thinking about leaving. “The Muslim students are thinking about boycotting Harper because of this,” said Ali, 23, of Schaumburg.

Ahmad Basalat, 21, of Bartlett said the exhibit expressed hatred toward Muslims.

Rich Johnson, co-coordinator of international students at Harper, said the exhibit was an event put on in conjunction with the college’s art department.

The school invited Chicago photographer Amir Normandi to exhibit his works depicting Muslim women in Iran defying the wearing of the jilbab.

Here are the actual photos from the exhibit: Amir Normandi, No veil is required.

Substitute "Muslim" for "Christian," and the college would be proudly defending the artwork's free expression, social impact, and the mocking of "tradition."

The fact that they caved shows not that they respect Islam, but that they fear it.

It was unfortunate that Piss Christ existed, as a needless attack on Christianity. But any religion that cannot weather such criticism isn't worthy of respect. That Islam cannot proves the point of the artist stronger than the artwork would anyway.

The Harpy should be limited to dhimmitude in academia. While Harper has made a strong case, there are other good contenders, and a few months left in Fall semester. We should not let the name of the trophy obscure the rightful winner.

Human remains from WTC collapse on 9/11 discovered over four years later.

Ten bone fragments discovered more than four years after the World Trade Center attacks on the rooftop of a nearby skyscraper are human, officials said Friday.

The pieces of bone, ranging in size from half an inch to two inches, were found on three days last month by construction workers sifting through gravel on top of the former Deutsche Bank building, officials said.

Parts of the trade center's south tower carved a huge gash in the 41-story building's facade when it collapsed on Sept. 11, 2001. Deconstruction of the building, which is known to be contaminated with asbestos, lead, and trade center dust, began in September.

The city medical examiner will try to identify the remains by extracting DNA and checking it against a database of World Trade Center victims, said medical examiner's spokeswoman Ellen Borakove.

Bless our vigilant warriors
Give strength to overcome to valiant saviors
Our sons and daughters, wherever they may be
On land, sky, or sailing the briny sea...
Safeguard those so lonely, so far from home
In times blackened dark, yet adventuresome
Watch over them, our brothers, sisters, where they go
Guide them wisely in times they do not know.

Glorify our warriors' calling
Whom we sent forth, righteous principles guarding
Calling them far from home to distant sod
To serve ever faithful, our country, our God
Whether crouched in wind-swept desert foxholes sandy
Or poised on high mountain’s steep cranny
Steel them, brave men and women, our nation’s pride select
The world depends on them, riding war’s bestial ogre to protect!

Bless our nation’s children, carried courageous into duty
Bearing above all things, compassion for humanity
Keep the light of hope glowing ever bright
Bless might of swords flashing shining right
Honoring always, father, mother, sister, brother
Watching always the backs of one another...
Their lives for a country they love more than life offering
Bastions of our grand liberty protecting
World peace ever seeking!

May hearts of men be truly won
When battle’s finally done.
Buoy up these soldiers, our children, sad and so alone
Feeling need in guilt for things seen and done to atone
Give thine balm of Gilead to ease their pain
Shield their sanity in combat that drives men insane
Bless them that they may look back with pride, and smile
Though multitudes of strifes and hatreds rile.

Fortify in our warriors' hearts, humanity's essence
Be gentle when war takes away their innocence
May intrinsic life values still be their choice elect
Defend them from traumatic stress defect
So as they return home, reaching, searching, to touch the sky
Give them answer to the question, "why?"
So a grateful nation may say to valiant sons and daughters
by noble duty sent
"Well done, my good and faithful servant!"

Where is the arguement that art is meant to provoke, to comment, to raise the level of conscienceness...?

Were it anything but what it was, it would have been hailed as such great commentary on life, such artistic appeal...

First they eliminate any art that may depict Muslims in a negative light...then they eliminate art alltogether...and at that point all those feminists at Harper College will be home in their burqua's waiting for the nightly beating...and there will be nothing artistic about it.

51 gymnast  Fri, Oct 28, 2005 8:04:54pm

It is ironic that a community college that was founded on the precept of the public display of artwork could be co-opted by the followers of a religion that is intolerant of the display of art. What the F*** is going on here?

Either the english as a second language program granted a few too many I-20s or the followers of Calypso Louie have staged a coupe. Did Senator Durbin put them up to it? Where the F*** did seperation of religion and state go in Illinois? Harper is a tax supported institution.

Churchill graduated from Harper? Did Sangamon change its name?

I ask because this is one of the few hard facts we have:

Churchill's Chronology

Here's the relevant section.

1972 - Awarded Associate degree in General Education from Illinois Central College, East Peoria, Illinois. Joined AIM.
56 Carridine  Fri, Oct 28, 2005 8:09:54pm

Note that one of the pictures is titled: Tahirih after the Iranian heroine poetess who was one of the first 19 Apostles of the Holy One, Promised by Jesus.

At the Conferences at Badasht, called by the Holy ForeRunner to the Lord of Hosts, He declared the equality of men and women, and forever wiped away any 'need' for a veil!

She removed hers in a few moments, and her face was seen by the assembled pious souls, some 300 or so.

Although courageous and willing to obey the Will of God, many of the men were violently upset by this "equality of men and women", and one sliced his own throat, ran from the meeting, and returned to Islam!

sorry efendi, but i dont see any "hatred" towards muslims in ANY of these photos,
however controversial they may be.

none of this comes anywhere near a regcognizable standard of indecency that has before or would today shut down free expression in a multi-religious, pluralisitc society, and much less severe than the type of protest art that goes along with christianity or buddhism or hinduism or paganism or any other ism.

And Baha'i is (to sum up a very complicated story) a sort of messianic unitarianism -- with its headquarters in Israel! They're also probably the most anti-Islam of all religions, as the founder of Baha'i was murdered by Muslims according to sharia.

“This exhibit is not the type of artwork that the college endorses or advocates,” Burdick said. “If this exhibit offends the sensibilities of any person or ethnic group, we deeply apologize.”

This story just confirms it. Colleges are now a recruiting ground for leftist scum.

But think about it - if you have the responsibility for the well being of thousands of students, are you going to take a stand against this kind of crap, or are your going to put all of your students and faculty at risk? It's something to think about. I'm very glad that I don't have to make decisions like that.

But I’ll bet who DOES make decisions like that are the lawyers and the insurance company.

Scenario: College exhibits art show that offends muslims. Muslims threaten violence. College ignores threats and increases security. Muslims bomb show and student(s) are killed. Insurance company has to pay BIG. Murdered student(s)’s families sue college for creating hazard by ignoring threats and providing inadequate security.

Hell, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has been found “negligent” for “allowing” the 1993 bombing of the WTC.

Heeding threats of destruction and death are not only about protecting life, it’s also about MONEY. And worrying about money is not entirely cheap and crass — a bombing, a couple of deaths, and the resulting law suits could put a school or company out of business.

Other news...

News on BBC right now, three girls were beheaded while walking to school in Indonesia. It was a private Christian school, and the BBC guy is saying that the fact that one of the heads was left outside a church “raises speculation that the attacks may have been religiously motivated.”

Uh-huh.

About a year ago a very offensive piece of anti-Israel "art" containing the usual fabrications about its history appeared in a store window in the City of Melbourne downtown area. Some of the funding came from a government grant. When complaints were made and the display was eventually removed, the "artist" complained about the "powerful Jewish lobby" using its influence to censor art (actually many non Jews were offended and complained too).

Should we do away with the Muslim lobby now?

Actually, it's not really clear what has happened at Harper.

The top of the article says the exhibit "was taken down." But at the end of the article, the coordinator for international students says the pictures were "temporarily covered." And it says a meeting will be convened.

Maybe they're still trying to decide what to do.

Johnson said the exhibit was to have been included as a part of other events dealing with human rights issues in Iran.
“We struck a reasonable compromise that we will temporarily cover the images,” Johnson said.
College spokesman Phil Burdick said he understands why the students are offended, but freedom of expression comes into play.
“This exhibit is not the type of artwork that the college endorses or advocates,” Burdick said. “If this exhibit offends the sensibilities of any person or ethnic group, we deeply apologize.”
Burdick said the school will convene a meeting with students, the two faculty members involved — including Johnson — the artist and the college staff.

Saying they "apologize" doesn't necessarily mean they're going to suppress free speech.

Nice to see your nic for a change. Yes, the whole world is 'adjusting' itself; every country--even those least likely to have to make adjustments for Islam like Norway, Sweden, Canada, are or WERE making adjustment to some part of their society or culture for Islam. ENUFF!

I hate to sound like some whiney theo-con, but if the exhibit was mocking the main religions, even if it was slanderous and unmerciful, would the college educated fonies react in the same way? They could have a gay "installation" with sex between Moses and Jesus and the same weaklings would be celebrating cutting edge art. Doubt it!

Those photos are tame--card games (seems civilized, no gun shoot-outs like in the "ol' wild west"). I didn't see alcohol being imbibed or any sexual conduct being touted. So a portion of a beautiful female breast is exposed. Since that image evokes memories of love, how does that symbolize hate? What on earth is the bitching about from the offended ones?

Students plan to leave studies at that college because someone else's views are displayed? Let them go elsewhere! It will be the same no matter where in our country.

Sounds like their daddies need to establish and build their own college that eschews anything that they don't like. Don't they already have that school to attend over in Iran?

Here is what I think was the REAL reason so much fuss was made, from the artist's description of the exhibit:

This multi media presentation is dedicated to the women of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Jordan, Egypt, and is a tribute to Iranian/Canadian photographer Zahra ZIBA Kazemi and Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh who lost their lives in defense of human rights.

I think it has nothing to do with defending the honor of Muslim women...in fact, I think it's just the opposite.

Dangerous caution by Thomas Sowell

What is the point of electing a President pledged to appoint judges who are like Justices Scalia and Thomas, if the weakness of his own party's Senators leads him to appoint judges who are like Justices O'Connor and Kennedy or -- heaven help us -- David Souter?

...

Senate Democrats are a united minority, while Senate Republicans are a divided majority, with prima donnas and opportunists ready to leave their fellow Republicans in the lurch when a showdown comes -- even if that means risking the whole party's loss of support among voters who feel betrayed.

That is the hand that President Bush has been dealt.

As Charles would say, read it all.

3 High School Girls Beheaded in Indonesia
By Associated Press

"JAKARTA, Indonesia - Unidentified assailants attacked a group of high school girls on Saturday in Indonesia's tense province of Central Sulawesi, beheading three and seriously wounding a fourth, police said.

were ambushed while walking through a cocoa plantation in Poso Kota subdistrict on their way to class, police Maj. Riky Naldo said. The rural area is close to the provincial capital of Poso, about 1,000 miles northeast of the Indonesian capital Jakarta."

Someone shows PHOTOS or movies or creates lids for icecreams and the Imams issue Fatwas of hate and claim the West hates them; sick Islamokooks attack Christian High School girls and behead them, and ...what? NOT A RUDDY PEEP out of them.
When will the moderate Muslims stand UP AND BE COUNTED against this insanity?

Yeah, I thought the stuff was tame. (And dumb. I don't get it with that kind of "art." Seems to me anybody is an "artist" when it's just a matter of taking smart-ass pictures. What do I know.)

Anyway. I could see the idea that the ones showing "naughty bits" are a little outre And that's a shame, because then everything gets covered or removed.

Whereas, if the artist managed to restrain himself from teasing with partial breasts, a true political statement could be made about human rights with very little room for objection by the "sensitive." See what I mean.

I don't think this is about students and daddies. This is imams and CAIR.

#263 "assailants"?

I am so G.D. sick of these terrorists and this thing in New Delhi really tops it for me. They don't give a G.D. who they kill, and the deliberate malice of picking the very moment and day the marketplace would be busiest right before a feast when the women and children are shopping for food for the feasts...of both religions...

Why are we helping those terrorists in the mountains of Kashmir and Pakistan and reading all these glowing reports of how some tribal doctor there had his opinion changed about Americans and Brits after the rescues. IT'S UTTER BOLLOCKS! LET'S GO IN THERE AND OBLITERATE THEIR G.D. TRIBES NOW THAT WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE AND THEIR WOMEN AND CHILDREN (ESPECIALLY THE SONS) WHILE WE'RE AT IT.

Of course it won't happen and we'll smile and make "nice" and try to get along with these animals and their spawn...but I'd like to see them dead.

After reading the story, I had the impression that the pictures were something akin to the notorious "Piss Christ" or the Maplethorpe photos that started the uproar over the NEA grants.

But after looking at the Normandi pictures, I don't see any grounds for the bitching from the Muslim students. No porn, no Koran abuse, no "Islamophobia" at all; just quirky little photos with the common theme of contrast and irony.

This is a free country, so kwitcherbitchin you hypersensitive little turds. I've grown so tired of the whiney oppressed victim BS. The freedom coin has two sides. Don't like it? Go live somewhere else.

And hello from San Diego, California.

There are many Zoos that have Komodo Dragons. If you decide to steal one, bring a sufficiently large vehicle - tying one to the roof of your car could draw unwanted attention (not to mention roof damage).

Otherwise, you have to go to the wilds of Indonesia and risk the beheadings of unknown origins (though they have been statisically linked to concentrations of Muslim terrorists militants moral strivers.

Stealing them from the zoo is less risky.

You mean a tiny minority of extremists demanded the art exhibit be taken down? Right here in the US? Perish the thought!

“We struck a reasonable compromise that we will temporarily cover the images,” Johnson said.

Covering the images isn't compromise - it's capitulation - the same oppressive horseshit you'll find any time Muslims are involved. Artistic freedom? What a joke.

Finding a daddy long legs spider in the house isn't as bad as coming across a fishing spider. Our home backs up to the woods, and we occasionally get fishing spiders that are bigger than a quarter. Big hairy brown spiders that look like baby tarantulas.

I'm not afraid of them mind you, its just that the hysterical shrieks from my wife when she sees one scare the hell out of me.

I still have my gecko T-shirt from Hawaii - that is where I first drove on the WRONG side of the road - my friend was with me and I said to her, OK if we turn right from the hotel we'll never have to turn left (and maybe hit something) . Well a couple of hundred metres from the Sheraton, there was a detour - and I had to turn LEFT! Heavens was that traumatic or what! And later around the island I sideswiped the bridge near Waimia (?) Heavens it was hard to figure out where the side of the bridge was from sitting on the wrong side of the car! But luckily after a night in gaol we made it back to the hotel (just kidding)

There is a bit of seriousness there - I am a bit dyslexic. One of my sons is too. From what doctors have told me, it is "mild". Last year I met with a developmental psychologist here in San Diego (regarding my son) and she said the only real solution is to work harder at reading than others - that your brain will learn to compensate.

Reading this article, I now wonder if there can be such thing as "mild" dyslexia, given that it seems to be an "on/off" binary situation - you either have it or don't. My son and I could have something else - maybe we are just plain old lazy bastards.

The media has manifest difficulty with issues of good and evil.

To them, goodness is typically tied to morality and Judeo-Christian ethics. Therefore, open to disdain and criticism.

Evil is in the eye of the beholder and not to be judged, called by its name, etc.

Moral relativism is a dangerous and blind idea.

Lots of studies on brain function in development but recently they've found that if you practice reading from an early age the brain developed footpaths as the electricity literally carves a path in the brain. These paths get deeper the more that activity is practised. If the activity is not practised very often, the path is not as deep. They've also found that a feral child, for instance, who didn't learn to interract socially, though it may later be taught words, etc. and to say them and read them, will not really be able to make connections and interract but the paths of the brain which should have been carved in learning this from an early age, aren't there and it's much harder, even impossible, once a certain age is passed. By say, seven, it would be too late for some phases of development to be inserted later on.

When you get the sticky pads, put them right on the floor by the door or wherever they come in AND LEAVE THEM THERE FOR A FEW DAYS. Let the spiders see the others as they come along and they'll get the message. They tell each other this stuff. Pretty soon they'll stop coming by and you can take them up. Just replace after when you see it happening again which it may not. After I get rid of their webs a few time in a corner I notice they stop trying. Scientist found if you disturb a spider's web it will try to make it again and again but each time you do it the spider's new web gets more erratic until it's crazy. The spider gets disoriented. Then gives up and either goes away or dies.

You are hereby invested with the title Chief Overseer of Cleaning Duties at the Mansion of Aussiemagpie

My daughter does live near the beach and looks over Sydney Harbour, but the only water my castle sees is the water dripping from the gutter when it rains! And in the gutter on the road!

When you come here you will be installed in an apartment right on Sydney Harbour ( unfortunately only if I win the lottery)But you never know!

:-)

My youngest son is autistic. We despaired when he was in kindergarten over whether he could ever learn to read and write. We had no confidence in his public school either. It was as though none of the teachers or administrators had ever seen a PDD kid before.

We searched around and found a Catholic school (also a convent) that specialized in teaching children with learning disabilities. It came highly recommended by our neurologist.

Son is now in 5th grade. He reads at about 4th grade level, is a whiz at math, aces his vocabulary quizzes (Mom insists on him spelling correctly), and his cursive is gorgeous. Also, with speech therapy every day, you would have a hard time knowing that he's autistic.

He has to take three school buses to get to his school, it costs us a small fortune (two kids also in college), but the results have been astounding.

Oh little 'roo, I'm very independent and self- sufficient, you find me a flat that is affordable and I'll be there. ;-)

Ideological cowards don't believe anything is worth fighting for with guns, including their own country.

In the Revolution, they fled to Canada.

#378 rightymouse,

That's why they are all cowards, all cowboy and no hat, I can't stand them and their empty arguements, they are the ones that would fall on the ground and cry when they are in danger, begging us better men to save them. POS's.

#377 aussiemagpie,

Almost finished 'roo, and fixin' to put brats on the grill or barby for Sat. afternoon football (real football) although I'm impressed with the Aussie football on ESPN when I catch a game, reminds me of the toughness I shared with the Aussie Brothers in 'Nam, GREAT Soldiers and still are. ;-)

Must share some stories with you one day - some of my friends were in Vietnam - at Bien Hoa

I've also been to Vietnam - had to see it, and saw the Cu Chi tunnels, the American Embassy, etc - went to our major Aussie battlefields -

I'm very interested in the war history and If you would like to talk to me one day I'd appreciate listening to your story

383 'Nam Grunt  Sat, Oct 29, 2005 7:28:43am

#382 aussiemagpie,

Oh My! I was in Bein Hoa on my 1st tour and was part of the first LRRP Team formed in RVN, 173rd Airborne Brigade, the Aussies were in Vung Tao south of us and I was fortunate enough to go on some missions with the guys. LOL!

#374 rightymouse -

Wow. That is some dedication that you have to your son.

We are very fortunate - just got the star testing back (standardized state test for achievement) and our boy maxed out the math and middle-highed in the verbal. The fact that he has such high math aptitude with middle-high verbal makes for an "imbalance" that qualifies him as learning disabled.

We had some expensive testing done years back and he has an issue with "low level processing" as the psychologist described it (and as I recall - results filed away and I am too lazy to find them). Anyway, things like reading and writing are frustrating to him because his mind is working at a faster pace.

Anyway, we mainstreamed him and he has learned to just work harder in some areas and he does fine now.

Probably I should have said Vung Tau - it's late! And I just read your lovely compliment up on the new thread - aren't you just a lovely bloke! I'm very much appreciative -you've made my night!

I'll leave my crook joke up there even though it's not a happy news night - I hate the the thought of those girls in Indonesia - just awful and so sad. Bastards who did this don't deserve to breathe the same air as civilised beings

It's a good thing hubby makes tons of capitalistic $$$ or we'd be hurting. :)

I know exactly what you mean about the brain on over-drive.

With our son, reading is done in front of the fireplace at night during the winter. It's a nurturing, comfy spot. I also rub his back while he reads to slow him down a bit.

For writing, he gets so keyed up that he will actually ask me to rub his back so he can, in his words, "calm down".

“I think they should rip this down,” student Matt George said.

Dear Matt,

I think you should shut the f*** up and not be uptight about other people's art.

The good news is a lot of new techniques are helping kids that used to be left behind - and a lot of so-called "autistic" children (Aspergers in particular) can be taken from "left behind" to "steaming ahead" with proper attention, because they're not disabled, they're just gifted in dangerous ways...

But I guess you already knew that... :)

“I think they should rip this down,” student Matt George said.

I think they should kick Mr. George's ass out on the street for hate crimes. You know, like when a non-Muslim or non-Liberal tears down a poster.

Funny how the purported victims of all that censorship and book-burning that was supposed to have happened (some really did, some hyperbole) are now the censors and the book-burners.

Here, Mr. George, have a nice big glass of STFU!

If you don't like free speech, move somewhere they don't have it!

I almost wish I was still in college.

It's interesting that if a Catholic has a problem with a crucifix in a tub of urine it's art that must be protected, yet a couple of pictures that challenge us to really look at the problems of a religion and they must be torn down in order to keep the peace.

"Human remains from WTC collapse discovered over four years later"

It is not over yet, even on the hallowed site of the World Trade Center.

I said this on September 12, 2001:

"This will be a war like no other. It will be a war of extermination, and it will go on until the last terrorist has been flushed from his hole and killed."

At another attack site, the Pentagon, the war against the terrorists goes on around the clock.
We are four years in now, two countries have been liberated, 100,000+ terrorist vermin eradicated, and millions of fellow-travelers fatally exposed.

It is only a start.

Harper College; Hillsborough School Board; Prince Charles---how much more will it take for us to become aware of the threat we face by the Muslim Invasion. The Muslims are still smarting from their defeat by the Huns on the Danube and the Crusaders. They are a vengeful people with unlimited patience; realizing that they lack the military power they are waging war on us with the freedom we give them. It is now a battle of the media and politics where numbers and "petrodollars" rule.

394 Protagonist  Sat, Oct 29, 2005 6:30:18pm
the pieces — some showing young Muslim men with machine guns — were downright offensive

If muslim men carrying guns is so offensive, then why the hell are they carrying them around so much in the Occupied Territories!

395 MegaTroopX  Sun, Oct 30, 2005 7:14:14am
Another student, Hussein Ali, says a number of Muslim students at Harper now are thinking about leaving. “The Muslim students are thinking about boycotting Harper because of this,” said Ali, 23, of Schaumburg.

Good. Haven't you figured out yet you aren't wanted. You have abused even the most (sanely) liberal definition of hospitality. By the by, just what are you studying? And is your visa up to date?

Good. Go back to the crap hole country that spawned you.

And don't let my boot hit you in the arse...

 Frank says:

Throwing objects such as this are capable of damaging expensive musical equipment and musicians. Any more of this and there will be no more music. -- FZ, Autumn 1981 at Northrup auditorium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After someone threw a plunger on stage about two-thirds of the way through the show, he stopped the band with a wave of his hand speaking in the general direction that the dangerous object was thrown, while holding it in his hand. This did not prove to be an amusing act and Franks mood hardened. - It was, however, an evening of excellent, serious musicianship around the release of 'Shut up and play your guitar'
