Today’s ride: 53 miles, on a luminous Southern California day, sunny but not hot; i.e. perfect weather for cycling. The plan was to lay down a good half-century’s worth of base miles, keeping the pace in the low-medium zone but steady. To that end, we kept it at 17-18 mph all the way south through the Cities de la Beach, then up the secret undisclosed climbing route into Palos Verdes. I annoyed my cycling comrades by stopping for photographs in a couple of especially picturesque spots. The normally fascist headwind was apparently in retreat mode on the return route, no doubt regrouping and scheming for another assault at a future date. I’ll be ready.
