345 Killed in Annual Sacrifice

Thu, Jan 12, 2006 at 8:35:11 am PST

It’s time for the annual human sacrifice at the Hajj pilgrimage, as this year’s Hajj stampede kills hundreds during the “Stoning the Devil” ritual.

MINA, Saudi Arabia (CNN) — At least 345 people have been killed in a stampede during a symbolic stoning ritual at the annual Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, according to the country’s health ministry.

Health Minister Hamad al-Maneh told Saudi TV that 289 others were were injured in the stampede near Mecca and taken to hospital.

Many of those injured were not seriously hurt and have been released from the hospital, al-Maneh said. The number of injured does not include those treated on the scene, he said.

Video of the scene showed dozens of bodies lying on the ground, covered with sheets and blankets.

With the amount of these kinds of deaths, the honor killings, the killing off of each other, how is that there are ANY muslims left on earth?

19 jjag  Thu, Jan 12, 2006 6:41:54am

This happens every year. Apparently absolutely no one seems concerned about the forseeable death of hundreds attending a religious event.

If this isn't sick, what is? What kind of religious "leaders" blithely ignore a predictible, wholesale, slaughter of their adherents each year?

20 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 12, 2006 6:42:11am

Simply astounding. More than 345 people killed in the annual ritual. I'm waiting for the annual excuse that the Jooos were behind the slaughter caused by the stampede. Or the inept and corrupt House of Fraud who shouldn't be entrusted with the protection of the holy sites.

Indeed.

72 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 12, 2006 7:01:17am

Where the stampede occurred:

The pillars are located on a large pedestrian bridge, the width of an eight-lane highway over the desert plain of Mina outside the holy city of Mecca. Four ramps lead up the bridge to give pilgrims access to the site, and the stampede occurred at the base of one ramp.

Mina General Hospital, a small facility several hundred yards from the site, was filled with injured, and some victims were sent to hospitals in Mecca and Riyadh, said Ismail Abdul-Zaher, a doctor at the hospital.

Ambulances and police cars streamed into the area, and security forces tried to move pilgrims away from part of the site, though thousands continued with the ritual.

The stampede took place despite Saudi efforts to improve traffic at the site, where all 2.5 million pilgrims participating in the annual hajj move from pillar to pillar to throw their stones, then exit.

Saudi authorities replaced the small round pillars with short walls to allow more people to throw their stones without jostling for position. They also recently widened the bridge, built extra ramps and increased the time pilgrims can carry out the rite — which on the second and final days traditionally takes place from midday until sunset.

So, they're not above modifying and adjusting traditions. Curious that they can modify certain traditions, but not others. Wouldn't any changes be considered apostasy because they're modifying the word of Allah? /just wondering.

These (former terrorists) are brave men who deserve to be supported because they show the lies of the terrorist culture. I repeat, CULTURE. And that culture has to be countered, unfortunately, with force (their words)not "understanding."

Without saying how, I will say I was "aware" of the development of the movie "Munich" and it peeved me to see a political thesis being prepared with less intellectual depth than the chorus in a Paul Mcartney song. It was heartening to see people quickly jump on the inanities of that movie.

Inshallah.

345 die during the haji. Inshallah.

Inshallah, Allah wills it.

If god wills it who should interfere in with crowd control etc... it is Allah's will that they died. To save their lives is to interfere with Allah's will.

Inshallah, a very deeply ingrained cultural trait in Islam.

Coming to grips with Inshallah is difficult in western culture. We are self actualized, free agents in the world. We have control over what we do and the resulting consequences (leftists aside).

Inshallah. Allah wills it.

It is Allah's will that I live in poverty with no hope. For me to try to better myself, create opportunity, change my fate is to defy Allah.

It is Allah's will that I die wrapped in an explosive vest. It is Allah's will that you die when I detonate my bomb. it is my fate as decreed by Allah who I am to defy Allah. Allah fate for you to die with me. I have nothing to do with it. It is Allah's will.

Get a handle on Inshallah. I really helps in understanding Arab/Islamic culture. It doesn't excuse it, just provides insight on how hundreds dying annually during the haji is "no big thing," how young men can blow themselves up, how the people of Persia have yet to throw a necktie party for the mullahs.

Inshallah.

77 Obi-wan  Thu, Jan 12, 2006 7:02:19am

Thoughtful libs would bring together a blue-ribbon committee of government "experts" and take a look at the architectural, societal & other flaws that may have led to this unspeakable tragedy.

Then they'd bloviate about how it was mostly minorities (singled out, no doubt!) who were killed in the stampede. Then they could rally the public to show compassion by opening their wallets & purses and give give give to the oppressed/downtrodden. Then the libs could feel good about their high moral standing as they re-design the city, employ more bureaucrats, lecture society about the evils of discrimination, relieve people of their money, and feather their own bank accounts.

West scaring away people from Islam: Saudi cleric

A top Saudi cleric told Muslim pilgrims marking the climax of Haj on Tuesday that the West was using the global phenomenon of terrorism to scare people away from Islam and discredit legitimate Muslim causes.

Sheikh Abdul Rahman al-Sudeis, the state-appointed preacher at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, also called for stability in Iraq and said Islam was innocent of the charge of "terrorism".

"The campaign against Islam has become fierce and Muslims are being described in insulting terms to distort the image of Islam and scare people away from it," he told the 2.5 million pilgrims in a sermon to mark the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha.

In 1993 I, along with at least half a million others, saw Pope John Paul II in Denver in 1993. A few people became dehydrated (it was hot and muggy), but no one died as far as I can recall. There were no stampedes. There were no fights. In fact the holy father preached against a "Culture of Death".

It is sad for the families of the dead at this tragedy in Mecca.

Inshallah. Churchill wrote a great passage about the fearful fatalism (Inshallah, basically) of Muslims. They don't believe in self-determination, but rather in pre-destination. No work ethic to speak of, among countless other social patholgies.

They seem incapable of creating positive things (a car, a building, a computer, an airplane), but have an almost limitless capacity to destroy. It's the only way they can bring others down to their degraded, barbaric level.

Kind of like the Muslim Mike Tyson in a prizefight he knows he can't win fair & square. He bites off ears, tries to break the arm of his opponent, whines to the referee that he's entitled to preferential treatment. Then goes home & beats his wife to boot.

I forgot about that one, yeah Winnie got it, you get it. It's hard in western culture to wrap our brains around "fearful fatalism."

Churchill:

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live.…A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities ... but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

Thank you for the excellent posting containing Churchill's commentary on Islam. Must reading for all LGFers.

Kennedy (JFK, that is, not the fecal Teddy) said to judge a nation or society by its heroes. The heroes of the West are the inventors, scientists, leaders & humanitarians who have so enriched the human condition. The mass murderers, the Hitlers & Stalins, are rightfully remembered as monstrous villains. Islam's 'heroes', on the other hand, are a roll-call of mass murderers (Muhammad, Saladin, Osama, Zarqawi, et al)...

Of course, we can also judge a society by how it treats its women & minorities. But tell that to a Western liberal and he'll laugh with sophisticated, sarcastic, disparaging haughtiness, and heap labels upon you.

I think it was supposed to be part of a meterorite that fell to earth that the Arabs have worshipped for thousands of years. Islam co-opted it or something like that.

Goes to show you, when a meterorite fell into Kentucky back in 1825 or so, Jim Bowie made a knife out of it. When a meteroite fell into the desert in Saudi Arabia, the Muslims made a religion out of it.

Illustrates the basic differences in the cultures.

Let's see... Saudi government officials & clerics angrily lectured on the evils of capitalism to the the Hajj crowd not more than 2 days ago.

Yet, the entire Hajj experience is a profit-making exercise in greed & crass commercialism, with the Saudi government raking in billions annually by bilking religious "pilgrims" (most of them poor) of their money. Visa & consular fees, airfare, hotel fees, food, bribe money, taxi fare, and on and on it goes. And price-gouging is rampant during the Hajj. It literally costs at least $10,000 per individual to perform this "sacred" and "required" pilrimmage.

Ah, the sacred & the profane. But then the rules never apply to Muslims.

The Black Stone's Origin

There are also various opinions as to what the Black Stone actually is. Muslims say that the Stone was found by Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael (Ismail) when they were searching for stones with which to build the Kaaba. They recognized its worth and made it one of the building's cornerstones.

Secular historians point to the history of stone worship, and especially meteorite worship, in pre-Islamic Arabia, and say that it is likely that the Stone is a meteorite. There is no way to test this hypothesis without removing and examining the Stone, which would not be permitted by its guardians.

There is no indication as to where this stone originated, but since it pre-dates the revelation of the Holy Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood, and even kissed, it must stem from the time of Abraham since the Hajj traditions are traceable to the patriarch of monotheism.

The Ka'bah at Mecca describes the shape of the black stone structure on a marble base which stands in the centre court of the Great Mosque, Masjidul Haram, at the centre of Mecca. It stands about 50 feet high by about 35 feet wide. Set into the eastern corner is the sacred stone. This Ka'ba is a cubed shaped temple rebuilt by Abraham and his son Ishmael. Reverently draped in black cloth throughout the year, it beckons to every Muslim of the world to come to its sacred ground.

The biggest problem though is with islam itself. They still have a 7th century mindset. If they had any sense the Saudis would ban this nonsense and put an end to the slaughter. As we keep on saying, these schmucks need a reformation to bring some common sense. However if that happened it would no longer be a death cult and where's the fun in that?

How my heart is singing, while the herd is swing ing,
Never tired of romping, and stomping on you at the Hajj.
What joy! A perfect holy day,
Hajj, let me stomp a way on you.

#182 Firebreather: It's really not all that different from the many pilgrimage sites that were popular with medieval Christians, such as Santiago de Campostela in Spain. In recent times, people have flocked to see the Virgin Mary in Medjugorje, Bosnia, or right in my own backyard (Conyers, GA). Claiming an apparition of the Virgin Mary is a great way to drum up tourism and help the local economy. OTOH, visiting Conyers is not required by the Pope (and Mary seems to have moved on). And no one has ever been trampled to death on a Christian pilgrimage, AFAIK.

Ever since I was a young pup
I've run and played them all
From car swarms to Pamplona
I must have seen them all
But I ain't seen nothing like this sh*t
How many of them got to fall?
Those crazy f*kin' Muslims
Sure play a mean pinball

They march around a statue
Ain't nothing 'bout it clean
Groping for some tittie
Treat their women like Holstens
They worship superstition
Their buildings start to fall
But those crazy f*kin' Muslims
They sure play a mean pinball

They're the pinball wizards
got their panties in a twist
Their pinball wizards
Those Jews, they must be dissed

Why do you think they do it?
(I don't know)
What makes them so dumb?

They ain't got no attractions
Still getting blown to hell
Mahmoud saw lights a flashin'
That's napalm there you smell
Anyone want to see a replay
Will let Mahmoud make the call
But those crazy f*kin' Muslims
Sure play a mean pinball

I thought I'd seen it all
From the valley of kings
Bottom of the pile
must be an awfully painful thing

At Satan's usual table
He still does one thing best
Mo's disciples lead him in
And he just does the rest
He flips them all the finger
Like dominoes they all start to fall
Those crazy f*kin' Muslims
Sure play a mean pinball

Threw some stones, got trampled underfoot.
Now lots of pilgrims like me are kaput.
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
And if you die it’s for a really good cauj.
Everybody’s got to may-hay-hake a haj.

Got to Mecca, seem no time had elapsed.
Slept like a log but then the roof collapsed.
Still did my pilgrim stuff without any fuss.
But then some luggage had to fall off a bus.
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
And if you die it’s for a really good cauj.
Everybody’s got to may-hay-hake a haj.

Tried to run, got caught in the melee.
Now there’s only one thing left to say.
If your agent tries to sell you on a round-trip ticket
You better tell him, “Buster, go and stick it.”
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
Everybody’s got to make a haj.
Lay down your life, it’s for a really good cauj.
Everybody’s got to may-hay-hake a haj.

Friend of the Devil - The Grateful Dead

I lit out from Reno, I was trailed by twenty hounds
Didn't get to sleep last night 'till the morning came around.

Set out runnin' but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Ran into the devil, babe, he loaned me twenty bills
I spent the night in Utah in a cave up in the hills.

Set out runnin' but I take my time, a friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

I ran down to the levee but the devil caught me there
He took my twenty dollar bill and vanished in the air.

Set out runnin' but I take my time
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

Got two reasons why I cry away each lonely night,
The first one's named Sweet Anne Marie, and she's my hearts delight.
The second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail,
And if he catches up with me, I'll spend my life in jail.

Got a wife in Chino, babe, and one in Cherokee
The first one says she's got my child, but it don't look like me.

Set out runnin' but I take my time,
A friend of the devil is a friend of mine,
If I get home before daylight, I just might get some sleep tonight.

In the stories about the stampede, it mentioned the fact that the "pilgrims" were carrying along their belongings and suitcases with them while they went to "Shout at the Devil" (my apologies to Vince Neal) and the luggage may have been what caused people to trip, starting the whole incident.

Now who goes sightseeing while on vacation and carries all their luggage with them while they go from spot to spot? Can't they leave their stuff back at their tent? Is it really necessary to carry it around.

The only explanation I can think of is that they are afraid if they leave the stuff lying around somewhere it will get stolen, so they carry it with them.

Could it be that the Indonesian Muslims don't trust the Arabs who don't trust the Africans who don't trust the Persians?

It is said that by the grace of God the Divine Peace (al-sakinah) descended in the form of a wind which brought a cloud in the shape of a dragon that revealed to Abraham and Ishmael the site of the old temple. They were told to construct the shrine directly upon the shadow of the cloud, neither exceeding nor diminishing its dimensions.

Revelation 12:9 "So the great dragon was thrown out—the ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the one who deceives the whole world. He was thrown to earth, and his angels with him."

Hmm, sounds like "the one who deceives the whole world" managed to decieve the muslims into building a shrine for him in Mecca. Maybe they should consider stoning the "cube" instead of those pillars?

The stone is mounted in a silver frame in the wall, four feet above the ground, in the southeast corner of the shrine. It is of an oval shape about twelve inches in diameter, composed of seven small stones (possibly basalt) of different sizes and shapes joined together with cement.

Held together by cement! Sheesh, you'd think Allah might at least be able to keep his holy stone from falling apart.

(in the 10th century the Black Stone was actually stolen for a period of twenty-one years by the Carmathians)

What was I thinking? Allah can't even keep the thing from being stolen! Twenty-one years! Sheesh, talk about impotent.

To this day, Mecca remains strictly closed for persons not of the Muslim faith.

Seems fair to me that we now declare the U.S. "strictly closed" to persons of the Muslim faith instead of allowing them to run around being offended everytime an infidel sneezes and insisting on their "rights"!

"Aaaallhaa, I should do this more often, and teach others to do the same".

Somehow, 100 years after mo originally got stoned and circumbobulated, the Hadith's were written. The original meaning and of mo's stoned circumbobulation and pebble kicking experience was forever lost in translation, and we now have ..

The luggage thing. There a millions of people at the haj. Most stay in tents, which are supplied by the Saudis. It may be that the "pilgrims" aren't assigned any specific tent but stay in any one thats available and during the day they have to take all of their belongings (luggage) with them because they may not be returning to the same tent as the night before. just a theory.

251 mich-again  Thu, Jan 12, 2006 12:10:52pm

Its a requirement for all able bodied Muslims who can afford the trip to make the pilgrimage at least once in their lives. It is far more feasible to travel to Mecca from around the globe now than hundreds of years ago, there are more Muslims and more of them can afford to make the trip, but.. Mecca doesn't get any bigger, so the crowds get more and more out of control, leading to these inevitable catastophes.

In the wake of the tragedy, Muslim groups in the UK have urged a limit be put on the number of pilgrims taking part in the Hajj to reduce the pressure of numbers.

Muslim Association of Britain president Ahmed Sheikh said Muslims should be discouraged from performing the Hajj multiple times.

"People go every year and I think they should be stopped. It's obligatory just once in a lifetime," he said.

If there are a billion Muslims, and they could all afford to make the trip, it would require some 15 million per year if they all only went once.

So its a good thing for Islam that being Muslim is a strong precursor for living in abject poverty or the crowds would really get out of control.

I reckon this is the Churchill passage you were referencing:

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property, either as a child, a wife, or a concubine, must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men. Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities - but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."

Sir Winston Churchill, from The River War, first edition, Vol. II, > pages 248-50 (London: Longmans, Green & Co., 1899).

Ah, Churchill. Churchill KNEW. Here's a pithy little gem I just read:

As First Lord of the Admiralty he had broadcast more addresses to the people than any other minister and he had taken pains to meet head on his listeners' tendency to wonder what the war was about. For instance, after a moving passage about "The hideous agony of Poland" he went on:

Although the fate of Poland stares them in the face, there are thoughtless dilettanti or purblind worldlings who sometimes ask us, "What is it that Britain and France are fighting for?" To this I answer, " If we left off fighting you would soon find out."

Do people bring children to the Hajj? I'd feel bad if any children were trampled to death.

I hope no children were trampled, but here's an account of one being stoned:
"Another man came to stone the Jamrat on Wednesday carrying his young son on his shoulders. The man was quite tall and the child perched on his shoulders was even higher up in the air. The man fought his way to the front of the crowd so his boy could get a good view of the proceedings. Almost immediately the child began screaming in pain. The father turned around to spot the problem and it came right toward him. The stones of the shorter pilgrims began hitting him in the face. Security officers quickly came to his aid."
