The Cartoon Jihad

Saudi Arabian stores are boycotting Danish products because of those evil infidel cartoons published by Jyllands-Posten. (Hat tip: Judith.)

Riyadh, 26 Jan. (AKI) - A Saudi Arabian company which owns some 60 stores throughtout the country says it will not stock Danish products until Denmark’s largest daily paper apologises for publishing cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed. Al-Othaim Holding will also boycott any supplier that includes Danish goods, the company’s president Abdullah al-Othaim told the Arab News daily. He said his company’s boycott could affect some 1.3 billion riyals (around 346 million dollars) worth of imports from Denmark.

The row started last September when Jyllands-Posten, a privately owned newspaper, ran an article about freedom of speech focusing on artists who were unwilling to portray Mohammed for fear of being attacked by extremists.

The paper accompanied the article with several depictions of Mohammed including one showing the Islamic prophet with a bomb in his head, prompting protests from officials of Muslim countries and various religious bodies.

Islam regards any images of the prophet as blasphemous.

On Thursday, Danish food giant Arla Foods said in Copenhagen that the ongoing dispute over the cartoons - the paper has refused to apologize - is harming its business with Saudi Arabia.

“More and more supermarkets are taking our products off their shelves and don’t wan’t supplies because consumers no longer want to buy our brand,” Arla Foods spokesman Louis Honore told AFP.

The Saudis will try a boycott and, if that doesn't work, a few suicide bombers will teach those Nordic infidels a lesson about respect for Islamic dignity, honor and culture.

Based on the poor reaction to the cartoons, Arla Foods decided to postpone its rollout of their new "Allah Pops"

Islam regards any images of the prophet as blasphemous.

My gosh, get real. Read Sura 109 again you radical dumbasses. My religion doesn't prohibit cartoons of Mohammed and Sura 109 says its OK for me to have my religion and you to have yours.

So STFU and kwitcherbitchin.

Weren't the Danes also the ones with the "Jewish" cookies? That alone is a reason for them to be boycotted.

So if we can get every country in the world to publish dirty pictures of Mohammed can we shut down all imports to Saudi Arabia?

Or will they just do what they do with Israel. . .sneak the stuff in through Jordan first. . .

yup, the [bigoted word]s know how to use economic force. and since Western Europe has gone to such extremes to build ties with the Muslim world, expect more and more soft pressure to be brought against European countries in the days ahead. Economics will no doubt prove a more decisive weapon for Islam than all the suicide bombs in the world.

23 Brutus  Fri, Jan 27, 2006 7:54:17pm

The proper reaction to a boycott of Danish products is a boycott by Danish people of Saudi products.

Hmmm... I wonder what Saudi products there are to boycott?

Let's see these bullies flex their muscles when an alternative fuel source is found.

The are entitled to boycott if they don't like something. I do it too. Problem with the Arabs is that they have to be careful. Since they are incapable of producing a single thing on their own (except for breeding suicide bombers) if they boycott too much they'll starve or die of dehydration.

This is the sort of thing we should be encouraging. The use of non-violent methods and the free market is a positive step even if you don't agree with what they want.

You can argue that this is a sham and there's the threat of violence behind it. And that's a legitimate argument. But boycotts are a legitimate way of expressing displeasure in the same way that, in my youth, many Jews wouldn't buy German cars.

The Saudies also recalled their ambassador from Denmark in protest. I'm hoping he stays away.

The political lines in Denmark is drawn up neatly along predictable lines. With the left and socialists saying Denmark should appologise and make concessions - and the right and conservative holding up and saying their's nothing to talk about. Fortunately a vast majority of Danes support the conservative in this case. And to think, when the socialists last were in power, they tried to prevent Salman Rushdie from entering the country. So predictable dispicable.

44 Rune  Sat, Jan 28, 2006 1:20:35am

There's another Danish newspaper (Weekendavisen), which though all the hoopla about the cartoons was just ridiculous, so they decided to publish their own batch of cartoons. And now they muslims are whining about that too, for apparently being even worse than those published before. One depiction was a happy smiling smilie. Another an empty chair. Another a Mona Lisa with beard – which according to Islamic Trossamfund (Islamic Faith Organisation) – is especially insulting, since 1) It depicts Muhammed (sic!), 2) Muhammed as a woman! (and we all know how the closet-homos feel about women) 3) Since Mona Lisa has long hair, Mona Lisa, according Islamic Faith Organisation – and you really can’t make shit like this up, resembles Jesus – which apparently is a hidden insinuation that Muhammed is a false prophet and only Jesus is real.

* News Paper
* Can you proved this isn’t Muhammed
* (Chair)This is Muhammed. And Santa Muhammed
* Roaring Muhammed by a forest lake
* (top) The prophets foot (bottom) “a pun on one of the editiors, which is said to resemble Muhammed
* (top)The prophet as he saw himself (bottom) Mom with prophet
* For thousands of years, a so-far secret society has known that this image depicts the prophet, but they have kept their knowledge secret. The newspapers anonymous artist does everything in his power to reveal the truth. He has now gone underground in an attempt to escape a mad albino-imam.

Aussies and Danes are in union. Danish Prince Frederik and Aussie born Crown Princess Mary have given birth recently to future king Christian. If us Aussies had to have one of our local girls find a prince in a Sydney pub and marry him, he couldn't have been from a better country than Denmark.

Just another demonstration by countries under the inluence of the ROP of exactly how intolerant the ROP is of any view other than their own.Everything goes in the ROPer world as long as you agree and submit to the ROPers opinion of what that world should look like. This is nothing but another mask being removed from the face of Islam for all the ''civilized''world to see.Let them gripe, let them boycott, let them demonstrate. It will only serve to awaken more of the world (other than the ''useful idiots''so commited to their ideaology as to remain blind right through their own decapitation)to the real face of Wahhabi Islam-complete and total intolerance for tolerance of those who choose to disagree. On a side note-Tuborg? I used to drink that in New York over 25 years ago -advertised as ''The Danish Beer of Danish Kings''...I could buy a case for $7.75! I haven't seen it anywhere in 20 years(and I travel the US with some regularity).I'd love to find it again if only to be reminded of some of those crazy nights of my youth.Anybody know a state in which I could locate some?

OT-anyone else seen the headlines today?Seems as though something a few of us wrote about happening in the immediate aftermath of the election in Gaza has begun.Thousands of Fatah folks demonstrating in the street demanding that the leadership resign.Big clashes between them and Hamas supporters-gun fights in the street.Yes,the ROPer's are heading rapidly towards full fury at each other in the ''Territories''.Looks like the outbreak of intolerance-i.e. Civil War-is about to break wide open.Let the games begin...

59 truthteller  Sat, Jan 28, 2006 5:31:24am

Good morning lizards. This is actually good news. If Theo Van Gogh didn't teach those liberal northern Europeans that tolerance only works with people who appreciate it--Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus--this might just do the trick.

Unlike other immigrants, Muslims have no desire to simply go about their jobs, raise their families and practice their faith privately. Instead they seek to change the very nature of the host country. Notice Oriana Fallaci's persecution in Italy, Britain's new laws designed to protect the sentiments of thin-skinned Muslims and now this. In a nutshell they want Italians, Brits, Danes and everyone else to tiptoe around their sentiments even if this means trampling over a basic principle such as free speech. (I agree that the cartoons were tasteless, but so what, a lot of things are tasteless.)

Someone on yesterday's thread about this tried to argue that Christians would have reacted similarly to cartoons of Jesus. Here was my response to that:

Frankly, there's no comparison. Every society has its religious nuts, but only in Islam do they spring immediately to violence, and only in Islam is that violence not condemned by the majority. In America, fellow whites condemn racial bigots such as David Duke, and many Christians are quick to criticize Christian bigotry. In India, Hindus are among the biggest critics of Hindu nationalists. It's the same with Jews in Israel and Buddhists in Japan. Only in the Muslim world--from Saudi Arabia to Indonesia--is violence a first resort. And only among Muslims is that violence either celebrated, justified or ignored, but never condemned.

Maybe it's because violence is celebrated in the Koran. Maybe it's because Muslims value unity of the ummah above all else. Maybe it's because they've been taught to believe that they're victims, yet at the same time representatives of a superior vision for humanity. I don't have the answer, but let's not pretend that the Muslim reaction to those Danish cartoons would find any parallel elsewhere.

So what can we do? Publish those cartoons as widely as possible and stand up and be counted. They can intimidate the Norwegians, but they can't intimidate everyone. At least not until the NYT or WashPost buys LGF.

60 Reluctant Democrat  Sat, Jan 28, 2006 6:21:28am

63 krisper  Sat, Jan 28, 2006 7:23:44am

I'm sure the attitude in Denmark is that the only reason the Muslim world is so touchy in the first place is due to American Imperialism. Maybe a few episodes of youthful "unrest" like France experienced will help them into the light.

64 Laurence Simon  Sat, Jan 28, 2006 7:45:16am

I will be buying plenty of authentic Danish Havarti cheese today.

By the way, look at the EU figures for Danish exports and imports.

They are a net energy EXPORTER. They are immune to the OPEC Oil Weapon.

Also, most of their trade is with the US, and very little is with OIC that can't be made up for with increasing other trade opportunities.

If anything, Denmark would make a fine battleground for East vs. West on the economic and free-speech fronts.

I have a 6-pack of Tuborg Gold (imported and brewed in Denmark - I checked) sitting in my fridge at the moment. Got it at the local Publix supermarket in Cape Coral Florida Just in case you are in the area - the one on CC pkway near the south bridge.

I've seen it elsewhere too. It's actually harder to find Carlsberg around here - not too many people like it.

Islam regards any images of the prophet as blasphemous.

OK, so presumably that's Sharia, that's Islamic law, according to this article, and if Muslims want to be bound by Sharia that's their business.
What is difficult to understand if the world believes in religious freedom is why that part of Sharia has to be observed by non-Muslims.

Isn't the uproar all about trying to force Sharia down the throats of people who are not Muslims?

If it is prohibited to not venerate Muhamad, isn't that just as restrictive as prohibiting people from venerating Muhamad? It's a breach of the idea of freedom of religion.

Besides, there is no claim by official Islam, including the Wahhabi version of Islam, that Muhamed was a god. So how is it blasphemous to portray Muhamed as a person? Muhamad was a person, not a god, so how can any portrayal of this person be a crime against a god? The Wahhabis, of all people, are treating Muhamed as if he were a god, and yet they denounce the Shiites for having shrines that honor people; Wahhabi pot calling the Shiite kettle black.
