Borders and Barnes & Nobles have been a disappointment for me ever since I worked at the local Used Book Fair. For me, they are a place to meet friends for coffee, buy magazines and take my kid when he wants a new book in whatever series he is reading. There also good if you are into a pulp fiction series.

If I really want to buy a book on a particular topic, I do my research on the net and end-up buying a used copy on-line. 9 times out of 10, the book isn't on the shelf at Borders or Barnes & Nobles, but they can order it for me.

They are in business to make money, they stock what the publisher thinks will sell.

Even our local library is a disappointment for me.

#18 (and anyone else discussing messing with Borders)

I'd rather not see people sink to that level. On a personal note, I have family members who work at Borders (used to be an independent store, bought out by Borders). The picture doesn't display corp policy, but more likely store culture. Remember most book store clerks are humanities majors (or drop outs), so they all tend to be pretty liberal.

It does make me depressed seeing how Borders is selling out their ideals for money. Back when they were suppliers, they would carry The Satanic Verses and never give orders about how to stack books on shelves. Just like Google, they found their ideals to be cramping business and pitched them.

51 Dave the.....  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 7:22:12am

I posted this last week, but what the heck......

In 2004, the various local Borders, featured almost exclusively hate-Bush books in the feature Current Events display near the front of their stores. Generally about 24 anti-Bush books to 3 or 4 pro-Bush ones. This is the area near the new releases where the books face flat with their covers facing out.

Then back in the main current events section, one local Borders (next door to where I work) had a Michael Moore endcap for over 3 months.

For comparison, I would check out the Barnes and Nobles. They tended to be very balanced.

Guess where I spend my book dollars? Either B&N or independent stores.

That's almost standard fare around me (I live in southern Minneapolis). My favorite recently has been a "Redistribute the wealth" bumper sticker juxtaposed over a Kerry 2004 sticker.

Someone calling for wealth to be redistributed who voted for one of the richest men in the senate. Talk about cognitive dissonance.

67 Axiom  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 7:39:42am

The best part of any bookstore is the employee selections section. I've yet to find a book that isn't entirely critical of President Bush show up on these sections throughout the Chicagoland bookstores.

That's bad for customers because the employee selection can be quite good as many of the employees of bookstores are very well read and bookworm types to begin with. It's a shame they do not recommend titles to induce critical analysis from their customers.

68 ggt  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 7:39:58am

I get frustrated at the quality of the 'best-sellers" list. The non-fictions that are featured on BookTV that I might like to read, are often very scholarly. This type of book isn't generally going to be a best seller.

The I/hate/bush/cheney/hitlar conspiracy theory books are written to appeal to the "average" reader --which I don't think is even at 6th grade level these days.

There is a law about this --"good money drives out bad" ?

I've had better luck at university book stores. Best-sellers aren't usually the topic of college level courses.

If you have a topic you are knowledable about and do active research in, I think you are always going to be disappointed with regular retail book stores.

It's a shame they do not recommend titles to induce critical analysis from their customers.

In order to do that, they'd have to read books supporting an opposing viewpoint.

It's a rare leftist who can tolerate listening to or reading a well-constructed argument that leans right.

73 looking closely  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 7:48:11am

Honest, this is kiddy-play stuff and its pretty hard to get offended by it.

Is anyone really shocked to find out that bookstore employees are lefty, or that some of them hate Bush?

No matter who is President, somebody is going to hate them. That's just an indication that the President is doing his job correctly. I wouldn't begrudge someone their political beliefs, no matter how irrational or juvenile.

And speaking of doing their job correctly, if that were *my* bookstore, the person doing the shelf arranging would get a little talking to before the end of the day.

74 Leauki  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 7:48:53am

That book on the Holocaust is actually a decent book.

It probably is.

It is books about the Holocaust that convinced me that fighting fascist regimes is necessary and that sometimes war is better than peace.

Had Hitler been allowed to continue ad remain in power, had Saddam been allowed to continue and remain in power, what would be left of Jews and other ethnic minorities in their respective areas of influence?

Lefties tend to be socialist/communist in economic thought. The goal of both socialism and communism is the public ownership of the means of production, they only differ in how to they to that point. Therefore, Lefties are not real worried about serving a customer base, which smacks of capitalism.

83 Ed Mahmoud abu al Qahool Martyr Brigades  Tue, Apr 4, 2006 8:16:13am

Wellstone was the uber-lib Democrat Senator killed by a Halliburton hit team while on his campaign jet.

In an Oct. 28 article published on an alternative journalism Web site under the title "Was Paul Wellstone Murdered?" Buffalo State College journalism professor Michael Niman wrote, "There is no indication today that Wellstone's death was the result of foul play. What we do know, however, is that Wellstone emerged as the most visible obstacle standing in the way of a draconian political agenda by an unelected government. And now he is conveniently gone."

In the article, posted on AlterNet.org, the professor expressed surprise that Wellstone had "lived this long."

Niman's article was also followed by a number of similar pieces in the left-wing press, notably one by syndicated cartoonist and commentator Ted Rall speculating that Wellstone was killed so Republicans could regain control of the Senate. "Did government gangsters murder the United States' most liberal legislator?" Rall wrote in a column Oct. 29.

`

Discounting weather, pilot error or mechanical problems in Wellstone's flight, Fetzer's articles have seized on the possibility of sabotage brought on by a futuristic electromagnetic pulse weapon that he said could have disabled the plane's computerized components.

He was a fairly far to the left senator from Minnesota. Died in a plane crash when his pilot made the decision to fly in horrible weather (freezing rain, low visibility) in north western minnesota. Some leftists think it was an assassination.

He did his campagin tours with this old green bus.

Even though he was pretty far to the left, he wasn't a complete fool and he stuck to his positions. He also wasn't dangerous the way Murtha/Kennedy/Kerry are.

Republican Senator Norm Coleman won his seat. You may remember him from the Galloway congressional testimony.

The picture doesn't display corp policy, but more likely store culture

Perhaps, but the corporation decides what books to carry and the quantities. Below a list of just a handful of titles that I tried to purchase that were either not in stock or had just a single copy.

Eurabia, The Euro Arab Access - Bat Ye'Or,
Borders (it wasn't even in their system)

The Rage and the Pride - Orianna Fallaci
Barnes & Noble - Not in stock

The Force of Reason - Borders - Not in stock
I found a copy, the only copy, at Barnes & Noble, Woodinville, WA, last week and purchased at great peril. I was given the serious hairy eyeball by the clerk waiting on me and the clerk next to him. She actually came over, looked at the book and then looked at me, offering up yet another another hairy eyeball! IT WAS BIZZARE.

Think a second time - Dennis Prager - Barnes & Noble
They did not stock any of his books - I couldn't even order it. I found a copy, the only copy, at Borders (must have been an oversight on their part). The clerk who helped me was wonderful. He was familiar with Dennis and his books. He was a conservative Jew from LA. However, he left the company shortly after that.

Dereliction of Duty - Patterson - Border& B&N - Not in stock

When I do happen to find a conservative book at either of these locations, it's a single copy on the back shelve.

There are always PILES of books by the usual suspects, Oprah, The Clintons, Franken, Dowd and other assorted Bush haters, by the door, right up front! Corporate policy.

BTW, these suburbs of Seattle are pretty conservative.

And what's really sad about the Wellstone Martyr's Brigade is that while Wellstone may have been a die-hard liberal, he was regarded by both sides of the aisle as a gentleman & not a foaming at the mouth kook.

162 wins is still up for grabs in the Red Sox pool.

Happy Birthday? 29?

I'm ashamed to admit that I couldn't figure out how that pool you sent me worked.

Thanks! 36. Yikes.

And if you buy a PRO-Bush book at Stacy's, I think the cashier has to take a break and "lie down". What I find amusing is that at lunch hour, at Market and Montgomery, you either have the LaRouche or Moonbat brigades handing out literature and/or stomping and yelling. And NO ONE is paying any attention to them.

One day they might discover capitalist corporate types with limited lunch time resources are not exactly their "target market."

I was able to order Eurabia and Oriana Fallaci's book from Amazon. The Waldenbooks south of Houston aren't bad. I've been able to get Coulter, Prager, Swift-Boats and a few others without any trouble, but I usually shop during the am, and the booksellers are close to my age (not a spring- chicken age) and tend to be more conservative.

How many games do you think the Sox will win this year(regular season)? I cover the enty fee. Last years two winners split 135 "points" (for recreational purposes only)

My Borders must be an oddball- they had a big stack of Force of Reason right on the front table of New Releases- as well as Prayers for the Assassins and all the good ones (Islam and Iraq related) over the last few years- I don't see the leftoid tomes more prominently placed at all. I will go see if the Korans are on the top shelf, though-

The manager must not be a moonbat!

If you think that's bad my College library only has one "openly" pro bush Book #14 in this search. [Link: wmars.cwmars.org...]
Ther are others wherre they will debate the pors and cons of the Bush policies, but Bush Country is the only one dedicated to why Bush is a good president. It is buried somewhere in the back of the 2nd floor.

i wonder if the authors of all those books has a last initial of W. That would explain a lot of things. The clearance explains why the dissimilar books are next to each other. The authors would explain why those specific books are next to each other.

Hey, if you were living with your parents, making $18k a year with no benefits with a college degree, I think you'd be angry too.

Its their little way of "getting even". No matter how petty, irrelevant and pathetic.

Bush runs the most powerful and wealthy country of the world, setting policy for the next 1000 years.

They put stickers on books and tell people where to find the John Grisham section!

Its the revenge of the nobodies!

I happened to be in Syracuse prior to the last election and went into a Borders in one of the malls to buy a copy of the Swift Boat Vets book.

When I took it to the counter to pay the clerk, looked like a college student, looked at me like I was crazy.
I asked him what the matter was and he told me that he thought the book was a bunch of lies from some crazy Viet Nam vets out to get kerry.
I just rolled up my sleeves.

Traumakitty, you're in Texas. That explains alot.

We just came back from college shopping the Dallas/FW area. We had a blast. Nice folk down there (good BBQ too). My son loved it and has his heart set on Baylor.

Remember most book store clerks are humanities majors (or drop outs)

There's a difference?

Gah...that is the closest Borders to my house, now that the one at Bellevue Square closed its doors.

The Seattle area (King County) has an interesting political dynamic, sort of a microcosm of the country as a whole. Seattle is as liberal as it gets. The east side of Lake Washington and beyond votes conservatively, by and large. (Redmond is on the eastside). I live in a solid red district, and I commute to the heart of McDermottland every day. I am sure you all remember "Baghdad Jim". It is truly a painful experience. I see more faded "No Iraq War" stickers, democratic presidential election stickers for the last 2 elections, and all manner of messages conveying Bush Derangement Syndrome in a day than most of you will see in a lifetime. I see a few cars with W'04 stickers...but most have been defaced. I got into a debate the other day with someone that I have known for 30 years, an otherwise-intelligent professional...he was actually trying to argue that Evangelical Christians are more of a threat to the USA than the Islamist headchoppers.

Fellow lizardoids who live in liberal areas understand. The rest of you, consider yourself blessed.

B & N is just as bad. I get perverse pleasure in turning certain books upside down.and uh, sort of moving them around!

a) massive reshelving campaign
b) boycott of borders by all sensible people.

LGF needs to start a book store chain, with shares only available through LGF and with approval by Charles or some subordinate designated for the job. After all, I need some book store to shop at, and it looks like we're currently letting the LLLs get a monopoly on this particular front.

One of my favorite sporting activities is to go to Seattle, especially Capitol Hill, where Baghdad Jim McDimwitt gets 95% of the vote, park my full size Dodge pickup with W04 stickers on both sides. I get out wearing a leather jacket, wearing a USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76 hat, swagger into a Starbucks or similar establishment and wait...

The looks I get are priceless, I wish my hearing was good enough to hear the whispered comments.

So far no one has had the courage to engage...

My only overt acts have been comments to anyone wearing Che shirts or buttons, "have you every heard of 'La Violencia'?" Response is usually a head shake. "Thought not. No who has would wear a the murdering thug on their shirt!"

Life in the Peoples Republic of Seattle and environs can be entertaining.
