Terror Enablers at Brandeis

Thu, May 4, 2006 at 10:10:08 pm PDT

Brandeis University, founded by the Jewish community in 1948 partly as a response to Jewish quotas at Ivy League schools, has now been invaded by the same radical anti-Israel movement seen at so many other US campuses. After the school closed down a bloody pro-Palestinian art exhibit, today the terrorist enablers turned out in force; LGF reader Jacob emailed some photos of their demonstration that speak for themselves:

And that’s not all. One of Brandeis’ student newspapers has published a virulently anti-Israel piece by a junior student that is almost beyond belief: Israel must renounce violence, recognize Hamas.

5 Carl in Jerusalem  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:15:06pm

This really isn't all that surprising. Brandeis is no different than any other LLL Northeast college campus. Why should it be different just because it was founded by Jews? If you tell me that Yeshiva University has demonstrations like this, then I'll be surprised.

6 Carl in Jerusalem  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:16:03pm

For those who didn't follow Charles' first link, what you're missing in this story is that the 'student' who prepared this 'art exhibit' is a 27-year old Israeli.

7 Edouard  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:17:07pm

Kevin Montgomery of Brandeis has lost his ever-lovin' mind. Israel, recognize Hamas? A terror organization that openly states it wants to wipe Israel clean off the map?

I suppose Mr Montgomery's next editorial will tell us that we must now recognize bin Laden and Zarqawi as heads of state.

How appropriate, they're walking in circles.

9 Carl in Jerusalem  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:18:17pm

From the end of my blog post on this subject:

The real question that's not being asked here is how a young Israeli Jew can develop such hatred of her own people and her own country. For those who don't yet know the answer, please allow me to suggest that you read the first 100 pages or so of Yoram Hazony's The Jewish State.

Mr. Justice Brandeis (after whom the university is named) is probably rolling over in his grave.

Which 'chick in red'? The bottom picture or the one above it? (I'm not sure the one above the bottom qualifies as a 'chick' - she looks a little old for that term - but that's a different story).

And why should it surprise you or anyone else that the person who prepared the "exhibit" is an Israeli? Being a self-hating Jew is not a prerogative of the Jews in Galut. Brandeis is no different from Harvard in that respect and some Israeli Jews are no different from their American brethren who go on founding ISM...
And I agree, when we see this in Yeshiva University, we'll really be up the creek.

#12 Pegcity:

I think I saw pictures of a rally about Jews who "renounce" their right of return to Israel.

I think Nazimedia advocated such an action as well.

What's tragic is, those traitors won't have any place else to go if they REALLY need that right of return.

They can't even spell Baal-istinian properly.

Losers of the world, unite! But I am of two minds on this. Should it be easier to defeat them in detail, or is it the case of accelerating their collapse by merging into one more-rapidly-failing mass?

20 Avner.  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:27:36pm

Um, this is barely a protest by any standard but a few morons who think they will make a difference by standing outside a Jewish school, thank goodness aswell it doesnt look like the students are the ones who are protesting but the teachers. There are always a few nutcases in our mists and these "protests" move the Erev Rav on one side and the Hebrews, The Maccabees on another.

Even so, for those that have not heard him, Here are some amazing Meir Kahane audio mp3s, know the man, learn the ideology of what it truly means to be a Jew, a supporter of Eretz Yisrael.

Did I say I was surprised? Anyone who's gone through a faculty publication list of any of the universities here (with the possible exception of Bar Ilan - and even there there are some) cannot be surprised about the existence and virulence of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish Israelis.

But I thought that the nationality of the exibitor was relevant to LGF's lizards.

# 16 Dayenu

And if it comes down to it, we all know that Israel will let them in, so their 'renouncing' their 'right of return' is meaningless.

24 ymeagain  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:32:34pm

What really surprises me is that there is no counter demo anywhere in sight. Even though we live the communist republic of Massachusetts, we do have a very active pro-Israel community and I am absolutely floored not to see any signs of them holding Israeli flags or signs or anything. Had I known, I would have been there as a one-person demo (not the first time, and I have a flag!)...

I doubt that the 'demonstration' was announced to anyone other than the 'demonstrators' in advance.

But at least they're relatively tame (and covered up!). Not the kind of demonstrators you see in Zombie's pictures.

In addition, half of these people in the protest are either fat, old or bald. They feel like they are contributing to society, but in reality are making themselves look like dumb fools who couldn't get dates, so came to a loser rally instead...

I couldn't resist following the links in The Hoot to other ouvre of the author of the article quoted by Charles. He is a real winner, this guy! from praising Castro's Cuba bike progam to this pearl: A Memoir of a 'Goy' at Brandeis

what an unbelievable schmuck!

31 zuckerlilly  Thu, May 4, 2006 8:46:37pm

That is exactly one of the reasons why "iLi" (I like Israel) was founded. We had a very successful "Israel-Day" yesterday and the German TV-Channels joined in.

The JP wrote wrote about "iLi" (sorry for posting the whole article, but the lgf-link-function is not available):

Wir Lieben Israel!

Leo Sucharewicz likes Israel. A lot. And he wants others to join in his enthusiasm for the Jewish State.

For the past four years Sucharewicz, a communications psychologist, together with his colleagues who work under the name 'I Like Israel', have been promoting Israel and Israeli interests all over Germany.

"Our target is to bring one million people into the street in Germany for Yom Ha'atzmaut," states Sucharewicz, "[in order] to protect Israel with a very powerful demonstration, to improve its image, to bring more tourists, to defend Israel with one million flags. Israel is not alone, Europe is behind her."

Working diligently to create global consciousness about Yom Ha'atzmaut - Israeli Independence Day, Sucharewicz managed to bring 50,000 Germans together in 20 different cities last year. This year they hope to double the number of participants to 100,000.

What began in Munich as a way to promote Israel's hasbara (PR) efforts in Germany, Sucharewicz and his team of Jewish professionals in marketing and project management developed a 'strategic concept' with Israel Day ceremonies at its core.

This year their unique campaign, which takes place on May 4, will stretch to 44 cities across Germany including Munich as well as Berlin, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Koln and Frankfurt. And, for the first time, the event will also be held in 10 additional cities outside Germany including Vienna, Zurich, Basel, Copenhagen and Miami.

"At exactly six in the evening, there will be a countdown and two things will happen," explains Sucharewicz. "Each city will be linked via a special network so that everything happens simultaneously. "The public will sing the Stevie Wonder version of Happy Birthday together and they will also release blue and white balloons into the air."

The biggest celebration will be in Dusseldorf, where the Jewish community graciously donated a lump sum of 10,000 Euros towards the event.

"In Berlin mayor Wowereit will address the crowd along with Israeli ambassador Shlomo Stein."

Several political dignitaries will be in attendance and most cities' processions will be lead by their respective mayors.

The 'I Like Israel' campaign shows no signs of slowing down as preparations are already in the works for 2007. London, Paris and Stockholm are among several major European capitals slated for next year's event.

"According to our forecast," predicts Sucharewicz, "in 2010, there will be 200 cities worldwide celebrating with us, including Tokyo as well as cities in the new EU countries including Warsaw, Bucharest, Budapest and Prague."

"We almost initiated an Israeli Independence Day celebration in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia!"

And how is Sucharewicz and his crew of media experts able to fund such a grand project?

"We are financing everything out of our pockets," says Sucharewicz, who volunteers his time to work on the event. He has not received any support from the Israeli government in spite of his efforts to promote Israel. Still, Sucharewicz is persistent and has hope for the future.

With over 180 organizations taking part in the event, Sucharewicz sees a convergence of opposing parties, all united in their support for Israel.

"You can see youth organizations from the Conservative party working in harmony with their Social-Democrat party counterparts, something which is very unusual."

"Nothing like this has ever happened in Germany before," confesses Sucharewicz.

"We've succeeded in launching an ideological bridge between regular German citizens and Israel. We must defend Europe's democracy, humanism and freedom and this movement must begin from Israel."

ymeagain, Carl in Jerusalem

This is not the Brandeis I remember when I was a kid, and IIRC, it was founded in 1948, the year the State of Israel was declared, as if that should have been neccesary.

My Hebrew School, at about grade 7 or 8, went to Brandeis to see David Ben Gurion zt'l speak. It was outdoors, and we sat on the grass.

Why or how this could happen I can only attribute to the L3 malaise that seems to have infected academia...Waltham has caught it from across the Charles, it would seem, from Harvard and MIT.

And thank G-d for small favors! I would love to see more pictures of these morons just to see if I recognize any from the roving "peace" demo that gathers on a major intersection in my town for the last 3+ years; they gather in time for the end of the Shabbat services and try to engage every Jewish passer-by in a very annoying, harrassing way. Jeff Jacoby, whom I see occasionally walking to his shul, must be taking alternative rout back in order to avoid them; at least I never see him on the way back. My 12-year old walks back in constant fear that I will tell them off (thus causing her a major embarrassment).

I've been to Brandeis a few times...

On the one hand, this surprises me because Brandeis is Jew U. You'd think somewhere in there are enough folks of the Hebrew persuasion, who would take offense to a bunch of fools effecitvely calling for the destruction of Israel, that you'd be shouted down when your unshowered, crooked old ass walks around with some stupid sign like that.

On the other hand, the first time I visited Brandeis (when the Dalai Lama came to speak there in... 1998? Maybe? Can't recall the year) I saw more NeoHippie flower children than I even knew existed. Up until that point I thought Hippies were a thing of the past, then I go to this Tibetan event weekend and the place is full of dumbasses who are auditioning for "That 60's Show". Girls who haven't showered in a week with long skirts and dredlocks carrying signs, ratty unshaven Revolutionary Wannabes, hippie burnouts driving beater cars with stickers all over them, the works. Ugh. They were enough to put me off the "free Tibet movement".

In Britain, before WW2, there was a neo fascist movement called the Blackshirts under Sir Oswald Moseley. Jews fought them physically in the East End of London where they were most active.

The demonstrators supporting arab terror and genocide of Jews are the modern equivalent of those British neo fascists. We have to fight them today as we fought them before. They are nazis by another name.

If we were to do violence to this pigswill, it would be totally justified. I would support it. This is not a matter fo free speech. It is a matter of Jewish survival in teh face of leftofascist and islamofascist desire for another genocide of Jews.

Kahane was a crazy ass demented lunatic Jew who founded the JDL, a terrorist organization . I always jump down fellow Jew's throats when they identify with the man who inspired so many Jews to hatred against anyone who isn't Jewish (especially Arabs). No hard feelings though, just remember that we're all human beings on this planet.

Sorry but you must be off your rocker... JDL is not a terrorist organization and neither was Kahane a demented nutjob. Whether his views on non-Jews were as extreme as you claim, is a matter of opinion and it fashionable in many circles to dismiss him as an aberration. But what is the matter of record is that before it became fashionable within the American Jewish community to advocate for the emigration of Soviet Jews who were held back, essentially held hostage, by the repressive government, Kahane and JDL in the early 70s were practically the only people who stood up to protest the attempts of detanté with the Soviet gov't pushed by the "realists": "no detenté until they let the Jews go". They were "in your face", they disrupted concerts by the visiting Soviet artists, they were marching in front of the embassy in DC and the consulate in NYC while most "mainstream" Jewish organizations preferred to go with the flow and work behind the scenes, so to say.

People like myself are forever in his debt because he raised the awareness of the "mainstream" and pulled it away from the "real politik" into the realities of Jewish families in Moscow, in Kiev, in Kishinev and everywhere else, who were denied the freedom to leave the socialist paradise.

And as far as all of us being human beings, oh sure... a nice sentiment and I share it but unfortunately it doesn't quite end there. Frankly, transfer, per Kahane, seems an attractive option especially in view of the events of the last five years in Eretz Yisrael. So, before you jump feet first down someone's throat next time, look around, read some history. Just because Israeli Supreme Court branded him an outlaw, and American Jewish liberals painted him as a crazy rasist, doesn't make him and JDL terrorists.

Yes, indeed I live in Brookline and these nut cakes are in Coolidge Corner every week. There are 3-4 synagogues (and probably a few unaffiliated small minyans and chavurahs) within a radius of a 10-15 min walk; I swear these people assemble there around 11-11:30 am just in time for them all to let out.

They try to stuff their materials in your hand, they try to put it in baby carriages, in open windows of the cars stopping on red lights, what have you. True indeed they accost all passers-by, not just Jews, but their timing, to me, is suspect. They are never there on a Sunday, just Saturday (call me paranoid).

Last fall, I remember, one of them shouted into the megaphone: "Come and hear what Harold Pinter, the Nobel Prize winner, thinks of Bush and his war in Iraq". She seemed to be addressing me so I informed her that Harold Pinter is a literary has-been and only morons like her and the Nobel committee are interested in what he has to say about anything. She had the look of complete astonishment on her face and tried to come up with a clever response but the light changed and my daughter and I crossed Beacon street and went on... My daughter, on the other hand, had a look of total horror and told me that I was "mean" and that she didn't want any of her friends to see me talking to these people "like that".

They are usually disperse to Starbucks by 1-1:30 pm.

Notice how it's always the most white-bread,vacant eyed, wealthy looking idiots that hold the most vile signs at these fucking protests. It's real easy to piss and moan about phantom "injustices" when you've got 50k in the bank and a 15 room house to go back to after you've finished speaking truth to power. Douchebags. If you want peace in the middle east, I would suggest a healthy bombing campaign against Iran and "palistine", with as much "collateral damage" as we can incur. There is nothing we can do to insure peace and stability on this planet as long as Islam is the religion of these goddamn animals.

tommoon...I feel ya on the Darwinian angle...and it's true to a certain extent...some people...maybe all of us...choose to run off the cliff sometimes...

some succeed

we make it so...tho...either way...I'd prefer to keep my optimism in the face of this idiocy tho...I look at it as a collective challenge each of us wins or loses...

if we keep playing this game

...but then I'm civilized enough to realize that *I* am the keeper of my emotions...not the other way around, so I for oe would not go the Saddam route on them...some sure would

blah blah blah

78 Fenway_Nation  Thu, May 4, 2006 10:12:50pm

Damn...I had a Lebanese Druze co-worker a few years ago who, on the surface, was a prince of a guy. However when the subject of Israel or anything remotely Jewish came up (even something as seemingly trivial as then-Dodgers first baseman Shawn Green taking a few days off for Yom Kippur) the fangs, venom and hatred for all things Jewish came out [under the socially acceptable veneer of 'anti-Zionism'].

So I asked him...if given the choice, what would he rather be; A non-Muslim in an Islamic country or a non-Jew in Israel?

He waffled a moment before deciding on a non-Jew in Israel. Yet for some reason, I'm sure the Jew hatred still remains...

Once upon a time in the Dark Ages, back when I had an ad agency, I used to charge my clients an "aggravation premium" for the times they drove me or my staff nuts. I told them upfront about it; that they could expect an invoice 15% higher than originally quoted if they demanded impossible deadlines or made changes willy-nilly.

It was slightly cheaper than my "pantyhose premium", which is what I charged if they expected me to dress up for appointments.

Gee, aren't those white chicks pretty, I can't wait to see their heads, stuck on sticks.

White liberal guilt is the perversity of the West. Look at the sh*t-eating grins on some of the faces. In the name of tolerance they march for Nazis. In the name of multiculturalism they hate their own culture. In the name of self-esteem they hate themselves. In the name of the God of Abraham they hate Jews. How many real Americans died in the current war died so that these unworthies can disgrace their country?

192 MigueldowninMexico  Fri, May 5, 2006 1:24:34am

Carl says that why are we amazed at this happening at Brandeis. Well Carl, it's not like any other U, you see? It's a Jewish U. referring about Jewish land. It's the very same people, and it is depressing to see them attack their own.
I've had my terrible frustrations with Mexicans or Catholics, that sometimes seem to be the worst enemies of their own people.
But that's the reason Carl. It's not just any university.

So, before you jump feet first down someone's throat next time, look around, read some history. Just because Israeli Supreme Court branded him an outlaw, and American Jewish liberals painted him as a crazy rasist, doesn't make him and JDL terrorists.

Well, you should read some of Kahane's own writing to see that ISC were right about him on all counts. Kahane was a Jewish suprimacist nut by his own accounts, not by the ISC rulings, he was dreaming about Jewish Halachah state in Eretz Israel in the same way as Islamists dream about world Khaliffath. His fighting for increasing the Jewish presence in Eretz Israel was only logical extension to his world view. The fact that many former Soviet Jews benefited from his actions is rather a case of "yoter mazal m'sechel" [more luck than brains], as they say in Israel .

I take it the term "AP" indicates some sort of standardized test. Of course, we never had such things in my day. Hell, we hardly had history back then. Half of the SAT score is verbal. Best way to score on that is to have been a person who reads. Does the daughter read ? I mean, as a way to pass the time/entertainment ?

["No breakfast. Gimme 5 bucks for some Wawa coffee!"...Well, it's in G-d's hands now.]

Mikey,

AP = advanced placement. I can't remember whether there was such a thing when we were kids, but probably not, since I most likely would have taken one or two.

And you are right about the SATs; we didn't study. And my kid is following in her mother's footsteps this time around.

These days your average college wants an average of 600 on both the math and verbal. (We haven't run into a college yet who even looks at the new essay section, so the question is, why bother?) I am not terribly worried about the verbal section, but the math will no doubt be a problem. So for next time, after spending this summer working with the Official SAT Study Guide (as opposed to paying $2000 for a Kaplan or some such course) we will have studied.

I was very strong in high school math, but at this advanced age...who remembers!?

233 realwest  Fri, May 5, 2006 2:07:01am

#230 littleoldlady - It's been so long ago that I don't even remember the SAT's. When I was in high school in NY we had something called the NY State Regent's exam - a statewide comprehensive (math, english, history, geography, science) exam that was looked upon by colleges (even outside of NY State) more favorably than the SAT's. It was a two day affair (both school days) that I don't even know if they give anymore!
OTHER THAN THAT, how are you this morining?

234 Kenneth  Fri, May 5, 2006 2:09:24am

Good morning all,

I read in this morning's Globe & Mail the Iranian authorities have arrested a Canadian-Iranian academic, Ramin Jahanbegloo. The report is unclear as to why he was arrested, (the charge is espionage) but he did recently quote other dissidents in a publication, and in an interview with a Spansih journalist he attacked Ahmadinejad's holocaust denial. That's probably what ticked them off, I'll bet. He's being held at Evin prison, the place where Ahmadinejad used to work as an "interrogator".

I don't want to be a pessimist, but Canadian-Iranian photographer Zahri Kazemi was tortured to death in that prison 2 years ago.

As of 5 or 6 years ago they were still giving the NY Regents. (I'm pretty sure my cousin's daughter took them.) I'll let you know what the deal is in 12 or 13 years when my brother's kid reaches his senior year of high school. ;-)

I'm okay. How're you feeling today?

240 realwest  Fri, May 5, 2006 2:26:41am

#239 littleoldlady - {littleoldlady} morning! I'm doing more or less ok, just gotta go in to see the doc this morning for what'll probably turn out to be all morning long (waiting to see him that is, not all morning long for tests etc.). The Regents Exam used to be REALLY TOUGH, but last I heard, it was too damaging to student's self-esteem and they either did away with it or made it one of those "See Jane Run, See Spot run after Jane" type tests.
Sigh. Sounding more and more like my Dad did back when I was a high schooler myself!

241 J.D.  Fri, May 5, 2006 2:26:48am

Mornin', y'all.
Oliver North in Townhall...

...The consequence of mainstream media hostility to this president and the Global War on Terror is to leave the American people woefully ignorant of what's really going on in places like Iraq and Iran and what our options are in either. So few American reporters venture forth outside the Baghdad Green Zone that good news from Iraq is virtually non-existent. Were it not for U.S., British and Australian military "bloggers," stories about battlefield successes -- like last week's counter-terror offensives in Al Anbar Province -- would be practically unknown to the outside world.

Unfortunately, there are far fewer "bloggers" with secure Internet access in Iran. Those who dare to report from within on the doings of the paranoid regime running Tehran do so at great peril. Thus, the American public knows next to nothing about what's really happening inside a government that today poses a major risk to U.S. security. We are treated to little more than the malevolent, threatening rhetoric of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, video of banner-bearing Iranian Republican Guardsmen goose-stepping through the streets of the capital and file footage of white-coated scientists fiddling inside a nuclear lab. In the U.S. media, this kind of reporting is usually followed by the "observation" that "because we're over-committed in Iraq, we have few options," or words to that effect.

Hogwash. Hyperventilated rhetoric aside, the United States -- precisely because we have U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan -- has considerable leverage when it comes to Iran. Notwithstanding Ahmadinejad's wild-eyed bluster, even he knows that Rumsfeld was right when he said last week in Baghdad, "a successful democracy in Iraq is a failure" for Tehran.

Though American pundits constantly harp that the United States can do nothing about Iran without the acquiescence of the United Nations, that isn't true either. Unilateral U.S. action to freeze the financial assets of North Korean leaders has proven effective in stopping a major counterfeiting operation, money laundering -- and foreign travel by Pyongyang officials. The same can be done "for" the Iranian mullahs who have "hidden" their ill-gotten gains everywhere from Switzerland to the Cayman Islands.

And if we want to get up close and personal -- Ahmadinejad and a "senior delegation" of officials from Tehran reportedly plan to attend the Iranian national team's World Cup opening game in Nuremberg, Germany next month. Perhaps it's time for the FBI to put out a BOLO -- an Interpol notice to "be on the look out" -- for all individuals wanted by the U.S. government for involvement with the seizure of the U.S. embassy and hostage-taking in Tehran in 1979. Such action would make foreign travel by Iranian bomb-builders problematic at the very least.

These are but a few of the non-military "options" available for dealing with the despots ruling in Tehran. They are unlikely to adversely affect the welfare of the long-suffering people of Iran. Regrettably, it's equally unlikely that the American people will see or read about them in the most Anti-American media on earth -- our own.

All the news...

I've been through it with my daughters.

They both took several APs. Most colleges won't give you credit unless you score at least 3 (out of 5). In some cases, its a 4. For example, my kids' school would only take 4s and 5s in the Calculus AP.

Also, Most schools won't take all of them for credit. You have to choose one or two. We were lucky in that we found a school that took all of them. (Case Western Reserve.)

Unfortunately, the AP classes around here have just become another vehicle to boost GPA's. Most of the kids never actually take the real AP exam.

Mostly for practical reasons. A lot of what I do here involves IP, NDAs, manufacturing contracts, etc. Our in-house attorney is doing more and more work on real-estate deals and other business issues. I thought that I'd be able to help out later.

Its also a safety valve. We're privately held, and the fourth generation coming up doesn't look like they care much for the (chemical) business that I'm involved with. I figure that a JD, emphasizing IP with my manufacturing and R&D background should be worth something and be more portable.

Plus, I need something to do with the other 8 hours a day! ;-)

...Nothing could be more innocent than the fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, attendants and pilots on that plane. Like us at this moment, they were in the act of daily life. They were not combatants in any sense. They were targeted precisely because they were unprotected. During periods of peace, and we have had a long one, some people come to believe that this happy condition is the natural state of life. It is not. The unprotectedness of civilized, quotidian life was earned, over centuries, often in war.

To dedicate the act of murdering a stewardess, pilot or passenger to Allah in the course of committing such an act, as United 93's hijackers did, is to engage in behavior that is quite wide of the daily life of America and many other nations. Whether the Khobar Tower bombing, the USS Cole, the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the bombings in Madrid and London, Bali, Jerusalem, the murder of Theo van Gogh, a great many people are being murdered in the service of Allah. In this respect, watching what takes place inside the confines of United Flight 93--and surely this movie is as close to the reality as one can imagine--is food for thought. Maybe just saying that you "know" Islamic terror exists out there isn't quite enough. If in 2006 we think that if Iraq would go away the world would not be too different than the world before September 11, then Moussaoui may in time prove right: "America you lost. I won!"

There is reason to believe that pre-9/11 thinking will in time return and prevail.

Defenders of Moussaoui's life sentence say he will "rot in prison." Perhaps in a better world Zacarias Moussaoui would share a cell with Hannibal Lecter. But if our moral betters aren't going to let Saddam's torturers rot in Abu Ghraib, if they aren't going to let the CIA's most important al Qaeda captives rot in "secret" foreign prisons, they certainly aren't going to let Moussaoui rot in Florence, Colo. He will be treated more than well.

Not to mention the Moussaoui trial itself. We arrive at the end of these interminable trial circuses of procedural delay and then claim "the system works" and "justice" has been done. No, it has done damage to the normal idea of justice. He saw the game early on and made a mockery of it. Moussaoui achieved a two-year delay in his trial by demanding to interview al Qaeda detainees. But our moral betters insist that the whole lot of Guantanamo detainees be given access to this same system of justice. They would diminish and crush it.

The odds were strong, as Moussaoui's lawyers knew and the government's should have known, that 9 of 12 jurors would vote that Moussaoui's childhood was "dysfunctional" and "mitigating." This is the therapeutic vocabulary that the West has developed to explain anything in the years from the postwar period to, say, September 11.

For quite awhile after September 11, we were a people united in the war on terror. By now we have let the adrenal pleasures of political fighting over the presidency dissipate the difficult emotions of staying united against a real enemy. The war in Iraq has contributed, but you can't lay it all off on Iraq. The ambiguity of the Moussaoui jury is a portent. See "United 93." It is very difficult. It should be.

In 1969, Ted Kennedy careened off a bridge while driving in Chappaquiddick, Mass., killing Mary Jo Kopechne. The senator, who managed to swim to safety, later pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident.

It would read better if they reported it factually. As in, the Chivas-soaked Swimmer drove off a bridge, leaving Mary Joe Kopechne paralyzed and struggling for air for some 10 hours before she died while the fat slob concocted a tale and instigated a coverup.

...U.S. Ambassador to Denmark James P. Cain said the Camp David invitation wasn't explicitly tied to Denmark's cartoon troubles, but reflected a broader convergence of U.S.-Danish relations and gratitude in Washington for the large contributions the small nation was making militarily and financially in the global war on terror.
The Danish government, he said, had resisted any temptation to use the cartoon difficulties as an excuse to pull away from its U.S. ties or its global commitments.
"I think if some of our other allies -- France, Germany and Italy for example -- could do on a pro rata basis what the Danes have done, let's just say the world might be a safer place than it is now," Mr. Cain said.
Peter Viggo Jakobsen, a senior researcher at the Copenhagen-based Danish Institute for International Studies, said the remarkable thing about the cartoon incident was how little impact it has had on Danish foreign policy, despite images of burning Danish flags and violent anti-Denmark riots in Muslim capitals around the globe.
"There was a high consensus before the cartoons to be active and carry a high profile in the world, and there is still a high consensus on that point," Mr. Jakobsen said.

Update: ABC News says it’s obtained one of the documents seized in the raid on the safe house. Pretty much the same stuff AQ has been doing all along — provoke sectarian tension by killing Shiites — except the emphasis is on Baghdad now. But here’s the interesting part:
The document complains that the losses of American forces in Baghdad “are hardly worth mentioning” compared to American losses in the Western provinces. And, in the concluding paragraph, the document says the “rank and file” of the mujahideen in Baghdad know their leadership does not have “a broad view” or “a well-knit plan” and that “this has led to strategic losses for us.”
Dare I say it? It sounds like … a quagmire.

IMMINENT DISASTER FROM HEAVEN

A former French military air traffic controller and senior airport manager named Eric Julien has completed a study of the comet “73P Schwassmann-Wachmann” and warns us that a fragment of this perambulating ice-ball is highly likely to impact the Earth on or around Thursday, May 25, 2006. Discovered by Arnold Schwassermann and Arno Arthur Wachmann in 1930, the comet has an orbital period of just less than 5.3 years and comes nearest to the Earth every 16 years.

It has followed its five-year orbit intact for centuries, but in 1995, it mysteriously fragmented. Hey, that happens, but Julien wants us to really worry about it. He says that some fragments are too small to observe – which is of course true – but while astronomers have predicted possible meteor showers – “shooting stars” – as some cometary debris enters the atmosphere, they tell us that the comet poses no direct threat.

Ah, but Julien has real evidence for his Doomsday scenario. He doesn’t only rely on hard facts, science, and statistics for his conclusions. He uses the latest and most advanced technology, as we’ll see. Since this year a “crop circle” (see [Link: www.randi.org...] appeared showing the inner Solar System with the Earth missing from its orbit, he concludes that this was a message from higher intelligences warning humanity of the consequences of its destructive nuclear policies, all of this tied in to the Bush administration's policy of preemptive use of nuclear weapons against Iran and the effect of nuclear weapons on the realms of higher intelligences. Says he, “We have to save lives when we have such information to share with the public." Of course; I ask you, when have the crop circles ever been wrong?

However, Julien assures us that the comet-fragments will fall into the Atlantic Ocean between the Equator and the Tropic of Cancer, though he says that will generate 700-foot waves, so we can’t relax. He tells us that "each person with this information has to take responsibility to warn potential victims."

His article, "May 25, 2006: The Day of Destiny" is available at: [Link: www.exopoliticsinstitute.org...]

I predict that there will be a meteor shower the night of May 25, 2006, and it will be pretty. I’ll be out there watching it, and nothing will fall on my head – or anyone else’s.

BREAKING NEWS: Julien’s website – [Link: www.savelivesinmay.com...] – has just announced…

In order to spread this vital warning (waves up to 200 meters), Eric Julien has decided to resign from his position of Director of Exopolitics Institute to create a website dedicated to save the lives of the Atlantic coast people, in the East of South America and North America, and the West of Africa and Europe:

Eric Julien invites everyone to warn family and friends, who do not live in a safety area, to go to proper places on MAY 25, 2006: inland and/or the heights. This date is the Ascension Day, i.e. the day for the people to go up. This date, once converted in the traditional Julien [sic] calendar (16 centuries long), is JUNE 6, 2006, i.e. 6/6/6.

Julien claims that we have still time to organise the protection of citizen without panic. We must stay calm and face this collective responsibility with dignity.

Whew! John Derbyshire over at The Corner is steamed, to say the least!

Shame [John Derbyshire]

Thank God the Moussaoui trial is over. I have never been so embarrassed for my country. The low point of the thing — and a low point for our nation in its accelerating slide to oblivion — was when that U.S. Navy Lieutenenat sniveled and blubbed on the witness stand while Moussaoui jeered at her — quite rightly, in my opinion. I expected Jimmy Carter or Oprah to show up at any minute. An American officer, in uniform, weeping IN THE FACE OF THE ENEMY! She should be court-martialed. Instead, I feel sure she will get promoted. ("If you emote, we must promote.") The trial transcripts must have been translated into Arabic, Farsi & Pushtu by now, and are being passed around among the terrorists as morale boosters, with much hilarity and Moussaoui-style jeering.

Judge Brinkema's closing remarks were typical of the whole sorry performance, and gave Moussaoui yet another opportunity to play the man — the only man in the courtroom. Does anyone, DOES ANYONE, think we're going to defeat Islamofascism by squirting clouds of this multicultural mush at it? The terrorists sure as hell don't. Does anyone think the enemy gives a fig for our determination not to "focus on hatred, bigotry, and irrationality" (Judge Brinkema). I wonder if you can win a war without deploying hatred. Homer didn't think so.

The New York Post described Judge Brinkema's closing remarks as "a tongue lashing." I would say that's about right. They have suicide bombers — and, any day now, nukes which they will use. We have wet tongues.

"When people see a strong horse and a weak horse, naturally they will favor the strong horse."—-Osama bin Laden. Yes, they will. We are doomed, doomed.

Good morning Lizards.

Looks like the increases in the discount rate by the Fed. are having their impact.

Nonfarm payrolls expanded by 138,000 in April, the Labor Department said, less than the 199,000 expected by economists surveyed by MarketWatch. The unemployment rate remained at 4.7% as expected.
Average hourly earnings increased 9 cents, or 0.5%, to $16.61. Economists expected earnings to rise 0.3%. Earnings are up 3.8% in the past year, the biggest yeaer-over-year gain since August 2001.

All of this boils down to the fact that the economy is doing very well, despite fuel cost increases. Interesting how you don't hear much about this from the MSM. But if things were doing poorly, you know the President would be getting pounded.

Nice gig for KKKofi.

What's the going rate to guarantee yourself a top job at the United Nations these days? $500,000.

That's how it seems, anyway.

Achim Steiner was a judge on a panel that bestowed a half-million-dollar award on Secretary-General Kofi Annan. And Steiner soon after got tapped to head of the U.N.'s environmental program.

Aides insist it's all a big coincidence. As is the fact that Steiner's name was added to the list of candidates for the job after Annan got his Zayed Prize for Global Environmental Leadership, presented by the crown prince of Dubai.

Actually, Steiner wasn't the only friendly face on that awards panel. As journalist Claudia Rosett reported in The Weekly Standard last February, also joining in the unanimous recommendation were the man Steiner is replacing and a U.N. undersecretary-general.

To be sure, Annan says he never planned to keep the $500,000 prize; instead, he says he'll use the money to establish a foundation in Africa devoted to agriculture and girls' education. But his office has been noticeably mum on the details, except to say that no such agency has yet been set up - and may not be until Annan leaves office.

The irony in all this is that Annan accepted the prize just after setting up - as part of his much-vaunted "reform" package - a strict ethics code that requires U.N. staffers to report any prizes worth more than $250 (down from the previous limit of $10,000). Among those exempt from these new rules: Kofi Annan.

Plus, as Rosett reported, Dubai was a critical hub for kickback activity in the Oil-for-Food scandal.

Most scandalous, of course, is Annan's continued tenure as secretary-general; he's not slated to leave until year's end.

Hardly soon enough for us.

All this hype for the Democrats is surely going to result in some very unhappy BDS-suffering LLL's when Novemebr rolls around and the House and Senate remains in GOP hands. For all the talk about the left taking over, they haven't quite explained exactly whrre they'll be picking up seats.

I was thinking about that this morning. A lot of people on the right are down on Bush for not being conservative enough. The mid-term elections may end up increasing Republican majorities in congress by electing stronger conservative candidates, who will then lean on Bush to straighten up.

You are referring to the doctrine of Effects Based Operations. The idea is to fight a war by focusing on all the systems that maintain the enemy. EBO was used against Serbia in the Kosovo campaign and against Iraq in GW1 & GW2. Precision bombing is directed at air defences, military command & control, gov't centres, communications, & electrical systems. Without these systems, the enemy is blind and handcuffed.

Attacking the water supply would be an escalation of targets, as it is so critical to human life. Also, perhaps not as effective or necessary in eliminating the enemy's capabilities. Also, disrupting the water supply would hit the people more than the regime, and we want the people on our side. So my opinion is it's not a good strategy.

It appears the Lakers blew their opportunity to put away the Suns.

IMO what people do not realize ...
and why they fail to be able to remain civil to each other very long,
is they are NOT God!
God is God.
So it doesnt matter if you are right or wrong in the pissing contest,
because your personal behavior should never be about what some one else is doing
(unless it is a physical threat, thats different)
Your personal behavior is between you and God
not you and the agitator trying to incite you
That doesnt mean that you never respond strongly - I am sure people have all seen me respond strongly and even harshly in the case of trolls.
but you never act in a manner that is less than your standard...

Because then that other person has sucessfully told you who to be.They have altered your response. They have made you do something.

If you walk in covenant with God and you keep that in the forefront of your mind when under pressure - ...I represent him, I cant disgrace that - you will see how that changes your behavior, makes you stronger than you can imagine.

Only God tells me how to be. Not people.

And if I loose it, and I yell in the case of person to person or become defensive or agressive in written discussion I am ashamed of me - and I ask for firgiveness and strength, and I try never to get that way again.

Carry yourself the way you see fit... not the way others would like to see you carry yourself.

And people will hate you all the more. But it is the right way to be.

But that's why I don't think it's a good idea. The mullahs will be just fine drinking their Evian & Perrier, but the people will suffer. That will cause the US to loose the large support they have among the Iranian people.

Better to hit the regime with something that will hurt them, not the people. Better still, not to go piecemeal (which is why the Kosovo-Serbia campaign lasted so long) but to hit all critical regime systems at once. Which is, in my opinion, what will happen.

The FNC poll is probably the reason AP released another of their bogus polls. One of those conducted at a Mike Al-Moore film festival of adults who are not registered to vote.

Gives the drive-by media another opportunity to gush in unison about approval numbers hitting an "alltime low" as they do every month.

OT: Climate change on Jupiter! It's Bush's fault!

A storm is brewing half a billion miles away and in a rare event, astronomers get to watch it closely.

Jupiter is growing a new red spot and the Hubble Space Telescope is photographing the scene. Backyard astronomers have been following the action, too.

I believe that the Bush administration deliberately blew up the Jovian levies, in order to drown poor, black Jovians.

Man, that Tyson Chandler is softer than a Katie Couric lob to Hillary

The inside game in the NBA is a physical one, and Chandler just cannot/will not play it. I'm not saying you have to look to hurt somebody, but you have to be willing to hand out a hard foul now and then or you will get run out of the league. I think Paxson will find somebody with a backbone in the coming draft.

It's like pitching inside in baseball, you don't have to throw at everybody (like Pedro does), but you have to be willing to throw inside and buzz somebody now and then. I still remember when the Philles beat Kansas City in the Series in the early 80's. The Kansas City hitters like Brett and Otis were just standing on the plate and keeping the series close that way. Then the Phillies brought in a reliver named Dickie Noles who put the first pitch behind Brett's ear flap. Series over.

The global change cycle began when the last of the white oval-shaped storms formed south of the Great Red Spot in 1939. As the storms started to merge between 1998 and 2000, the mixing of heat began to slow down at that latitude and has continued slowing ever since.

The movement of heat from the equator to Jupiter's south pole is expected to stop at 34 degrees southern latitude, where Red Spot Jr. is forming.

This will create a big wall and stop the mixing of heat and airflow, the thinking goes. As a result, areas around the equator become warmer, while the poles can start to cool down.

It's as broad as it is long.

not to get too involved... but there was a subtle difference between the first war in Iraq and this one.

the main difference? Kuwait.

our purpose was to boot iraq out of kuwait.

then the UN kept us from finishing the job that many wanted to do.

the same UN that is led by, and has members who, illegally bought oil from iraq in exchange for weapons, technology and votes.

France, Germany, Canada, Russia, etc.

this new war was in SPITE of the UN, done on our terms and by our rules (which, by the way, are much more humane than the UN... for reference see the stories of the UN troops who rape and pillage)

the stated purpose of this war was to remove saddam and rebuild iraq.

Part of the hardship in this war, in my lowly childish opinion, is that when the UN wouldn't let us finish the job the first time, we left many rebels high and dry, and Saddam punished them severly (i.e. torture and death) for it.

Though that is changing.

Ohhh and one more think Kenneth, NATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE includes the water supplies as well...

Electrical & communications are more critical to sustaining a regime, water much less so. In Iraq, the damns were bombed primarily to knock out electrical generation.

As for the Japan comparison, it is one of dramatic contrast. The Imperial Japanese regime was fully supported by the Japanese people. All of Japan was the enemy, and therefore a legitimate target of war.

In Iran, the majority of Iranians hate the mullah's regime, so targeting the people only helps the mullahs. The mullahs do have limited popular support & it's organized into the Basij brigades, a volunteer branch of the Revolutionery Guards. These groups must be targeted if regime change is to succeed. If these groups are allowed to operate, there will be a bloodbath in Iran as the Revolutionery Guards attack opposition groups, students & ethnic minorities.

There is a growing movement in Iran, supported by emigre Iranians, to overthrow the regime. We need to help these people, not cut them off at the knees.

Ohhh and now a question:

After GULD WAR ONE, did the United States help IRAQ REBUILD?!?

No, and we left Saddam in power. We all know how well that strategy worked out.

The point about EBO is to identify the "effect" you want to create. Do you want to slowly increment pain on the regime, as in Serbia? Do you want to push an occupying army out of a given region, as in Gulf War 1? Do you want to destroy a regime, but leave most of the country intact as in Operation Iraqi Freedom? These are different effects and each dictate different operations.

If & when the US decides to act on Iran they will want to destroy the regime, & destroy the nuclear program, but leave as much of the country intact as possible so as not to hurt the people, who are anti-mullah and pro-US.

* 1 out of every 2 counties in America doesn’t have an OB-GYN
* 75% of neurosurgeons in America will no longer operate on children due to fear of being sued
* 8 out of 10 doctors today practice 'defensive’ medicine to shield themselves from frivolous lawsuits. Consequently, Americans waste nearly $100 billion a year on unnecessary medical procedures
* In February, my home state of Tennessee was officially designated 1 of 20 states in ‘crisis’ by the American Medical Association. Why? 81 out of 95 counties don’t have a practicing neurosurgeon, and half don’t have an orthopedic surgeon, emergency room physician or OB-GYN

Laughing my head off at Steyn's Mailbox.

Did you also see this?

Worshipping at the church of Tim Hortons

A couple of absolutely classic Steyn bits:

"Timbit Nation," as the Toronto Star headlined it, belongs to a thriving genre of journalism: the feel-good story that's somehow very demoralizing. It's less Timmy than tinny -- hollow and rather sad. I yield to no one in my admiration for a glazed maple cream doughnut, but I'm not sure I'd regard it as sufficient replacement for the entire Judeo-Christian inheritance. And with the best will in the world, standing in line at a Tim's one Sunday morning a couple of months back, I couldn't detect any great sense of community: as slow-moving doughnut lines go, it was not unpleasant, but nor was it an exercise in national affirmation. As a viable thesis, that and a buck'll get you a cup of coffee.

And:

You really need a Euro-Michael Adams to answer those questions -- to point out that Americans' collapsing communities are driving them to flock to grim rain-swept cemeteries and huddle round burial plots of friends and family in the forlorn hope of recovering the lost sense of society obliterated by their paranoid Second Amendment fearfulness, while the Frenchman by contrast affirms his belief both in personal interconnectedness and collective responsibility by spending the weekend with his wife's sister at a nude beach on the Côte d'Azur, secure in the knowledge that his dead mother on ice in the meat locker back in town is the state's problem, not his.

7,500 signatures needed. It's easy and painless.

On Monday, I will bring medical malpractice reform legislation to the floor of the Senate. You may recall that I introduced similar legislation THREE times in the last Congress. In each case, opponents filibustered the motion to proceed.

No deliberation. No debate. No meaningful solution.

Medical malpractice lawsuits are part of a larger lawsuit epidemic in America – a lawsuit lottery, really – that is crippling our healthcare system. ...
The mere threat of these huge jury awards forces many doctors and insurance companies to settle cases, even if they’re not guilty. And most of the cases filed in U.S. court – almost two-thirds – are found to be without merit and are dropped or dismissed.

But too often, that doesn’t matter. The damage is done. Countless highly qualified and immensely committed doctors are literally being forced from their chosen field of medicine. These are passionate men and women; these are people who have devoted their life to healing others. And, with each passing day, we’re losing more and more of them.

They’re quitting. They’re retiring. They’re relocating. The cost of saving lives is just too high, so they simply stop practicing in fields where excessive awards are commonplace.

And when the life-savers stop saving lives, we know what chilling reality ensues. No father should ever have to ask: ‘where will I take my family in an emergency?’ No expecting mother should ever have to wonder: ‘who will deliver my baby?’

So I ask you, who wins in the current system? Not the patients. Not the doctors. Not even the insurance companies. Everyone loses in this system EXCEPT the predatory personal injury lawyers. There is no reason – none – that a lawyer should walk away with a $50 million dollar cut of a medical liability settlement. Make no mistake, our ultimate goal here is not to limit justice, but to limit abuse.

My friends, the time has come to enact balanced reforms that will preserve America’s access to the highest quality of health care. I hope you will stand with me ... by telling the Senate it needs to pass meaningful lawsuit abuse reform NOW.

Give this issue a full and open debate. Discuss the merits, weigh the costs and benefits. But pass medical malpractice reform NOW.

If you feel as I do that predatory trial lawyers are ruining the American health care system and that medical malpractice reform is urgent and overdue, please sign my online petition. And then forward to your friends, family and co-workers, so we can reach our goal of 7,500 digital signatures and show the United States Senate what America believes.

Sign the petition

Just within the last 2 weeks, I posted at least one article about this movement against the mullahs that you are talking about...

It appears the U.S. of A. has set aside millions of dollars to be distributed to these "anti-mullah" groups in order to help them in their quest...

As of the writing of the article/articles, those "anti-mullah" groups wanted nothing to do with any help from the United States...

I am well aware of the anti-regime groups. They are obligated to publicly deny support from the US as that would play into the regime hands. Iranians are very nationalistic, and overt US aid to the rebels would undermine their credibility. Never the less, when a Teheran newspaper polled Iranians what foreign country they admired the most, 75% said the US! The Iranian people are the most pro-US group in the region. The editor of the newspaper was arrested & tortured, by the way.

My glasses are not rose-tinted, and neither are they blinded with hatred.

Hey, look what I found. Something named ZEEK, A Journal of Jewish Thought and Culture. Interesting article.

France’s Jewish Prophets: Alain Finkielkraut, Albert Memmi, and the Looming Crisis of Liberalism

it is the question of immigration that looms as France’s greatest challenge, and it is on that issue that France's Jewish intellectuals are marking their greatest distance from the country’s liberal consensus. Two figures in particular stand out: Albert Memmi, the venerable fellow traveler of Jean-Paul Sartre whose leftist, third-worldist credentials are indisputable, and Alain Finkielkraut, who made his career defending the universalist orthodoxy of French Republicanism (itself a particularly Jewish career in the spirit of Adolphe Crémieux and Léon Blum). Both have sounded the alarm against the perceived perils posed by the Muslim community. For various reasons, Memmi escaped public wrath, and Finkielkraut was not so lucky.

Yes, I read the Kristol article, and it is disheartening to here Sec. Rice say that stuff. However, I have also heard Bush say "all options are on the table" and that he will not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. So we can choose to believe which sound bite we like. In the end, it's not what they say each day, but what they do when the time comes that is important.

About that table full of options. The US told the Europeans to go ahead and pursue diplomacy. The Iranians rejected every diplomatic offer given to them, so the number of options is growing smaller, and the Europeans are recognizing that. Next they will try sanctions, which may slow the regime's nuclear program, but not stop it. The Europeans, hopefully, will realize that too. Then there will be only one option left, military force, and the US will have the Europeans on side with them. That is the Bush strategy. You may disagree with the wisdom of it, but that is the strategy.

In Britain, ROP guy stabs his sister in the throat 18 times because she "loved the wrong man."

HONOR KILLING ALERT!

Samaira Nazir, 25, was stabbed 18 times and had her throat cut after asking her family if she could marry a man from Afghanistan...

Her parents allegedly wanted her to marry in the Pakistani family circle. Asylum seeker Salman Mohammed befriended Miss Nazir's brother shortly after arriving in the UK on the back of a lorry in 2000.

The court heard he and Miss Nazir kept their relationship secret.

Sally Howes, prosecuting, said the situation reached "crisis point" when Miss Nazir suggested that she would like to marry Mr Mohammed. Her brother reacted angrily, the court heard...

The court was told that neighbours reported hearing screams and saw Miss Nazir's arm come out of the front door before she was pulled back into the house by her hair.

A 999 call was made from the family home and a man told the operator he had killed Miss Nazir.

No, it isn't because I bet you base some of your ideas about "IRANIANS = PRO US" on the fact that they like Western things...

Wrong. I base my idea that many Iranians are pro-US because the majority of Iranians say they like the US, want to emigrate to the US, & they want genuine democracy and freedom. The majority of Iranians also hate the Mullahs. I'm referring to Iranians in Iran, not American immigrants.

Here's a link on the what the House was doing regarding oil. While it passes an anti-gouging bill, which supporters admit will do absolutely nothing to cut prices or increase supply, it rejected:

...a Republican bill that supporters said would make it easier to build refineries in hopes of easing tight gasoline supplies.

All but 13 Democrats opposed the measure, intended to quicken the permitting process. They said it would not bring down gas prices, could lessen environmental protection and usurp local say where refineries go.

Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Virginia, said the problem was not a delay in permitting.

"The real reason we have a refinery shortage is the companies that own refineries are profiting enormously from the ... refinery bottlenecks," he said.

Refinery measure fails Republicans branded Democrats as obstructionists on energy. The vote, 237-188, fell short of the two-thirds needed to pass under special procedures.

Islamo-fascists protest Israeli Independence celebrations @ Stanford;

Celebration meets with Protest

Adorning trees with Israeli flags and providing free falafel to spectators, the Stanford Israel Alliance and Hillel at Stanford celebrated Israeli Independence Day with much festivity yesterday.

Approximately 200 students, staff and visitors gathered in White Plaza to mark the noontime proceedings. While many were active in the celebration, some 25 students associated with the Coalition for Justice in the Middle East (CJME) and the Muslim Student Awareness Network (MSAN) protested the event, citing the displacement of the Palestinian population from the region.
---
Two University security officials were also present and stood directly between the group of protesters and the celebration.
---
Fellow protester [ed. and Iranian national] Ali Faghfuri, a graduate student in electrical engineering, echoed these concerns.

“They are having a celebration over there,” he said. “Every history has two sides. There are a lot of problems in the conflict that they should be talking about.”

Lizards recall the Palestinians had a celebration of their own a few years ago, "over there".

Yes, an air campaign, not a ground invasion, although there is an outside chance they might send in troops to protect the oil fields in Kuzestan, south western Iran.

My daughter was attacked at a WalMart by some crazed woman with her push buggy. It started in the parking lot when my daughter parked in what this woman thought was her God given parking space. She yelled and cursed her in the parking lot. Daughter blew it off and went inside when suddenly this woman pushed her buggy down the aisle slamming it into daughters backside and the woman's kid was in the buggy! Then she started pulling stuff off the shelves and hurling them at her. Thankfully it was the paper plates, napkins, etc. aisle and not canned goods.

True enough, wanting to emigrate to the US is no indicator of pro-US sentiment. But the Iranian public opinion poll I referred to was conducted in Iran by an Iranian newspaper. They printed the result of the poll. The regime goons showed up, shut down the paper and hauled the editor off to prison where he was tortured for several months.

I trust that poll, and many other similar observations by people much more knowledgeable about Iran than you or I, such as Kenneth Timmerman & Michael Ledeen, that the majority of Iranians are pro-US. These same sources also say the regime does have a significant power base among rural peasants and religious extremists. These people are the volunteers for the Revolutionary Guards & the Basij Brigades.

Conditions inside Iran are terrible. Drug use is epidemic (they have the highest heroin addiction rate in the world), thousands of women are forced into prostitution to survive, unemploymnet is high, labor unions & students are protesting, public employees are going unpaid, the ethnic regions are rebelling, capital is fleeing the country & mysterious 'accidents' are killing senior regime & military leaders. All of these are signs of a week regime.

But the regime is also desperate and has no compunctions about using deadly force on its enemies. Jouranlists, union & studen leaders are arrested weekly. They disappear into the prisons where torure is routine. Ahmadinejad's outbursts are to be seen in this light, intended to whip up their supporters, cower their enemies, and to drive up oil prices which provides the regime with much needed cash.

723 Ed Mahmoud abu al Qahool Martyr Brigades  Fri, May 5, 2006 6:35:16am

I hate agreeing with anything the Shrieker says, but since the mullets of Iran are willing to kill to stay in power, I don't think the percentage of the Iranian population that hates the mullets and loves Western ways will be coming to power anytime soon.

Re: sanctions. It's possible the sanctions game will be drawn out ad-infinitum. The Iranians' strategy is to wait out Bush's term as they figure he is an aberation. If that happens, we are indeed doomed to nuclear war.

The Brit who said military force is off the table was Jack Straw, and he just lost his job this morning. There is a new UK Foreign Minister, so lets hear what she has to say.

As for the French, Chirac & de Villepin are on their way out. If Zarkozy is the next President of France, & he is leading in polls, they may change their position dramaticaly.

The most one could hope for from China & Russia is an abstention.

Hey, Swamp Woman

I am that guy you referred to in tyour other post that dealt with civilian casualties. Besides misrepresenting what I said, you also asked if I was ex-military.

I'm a Vietnam vet. US Air Force. I worked on Linebacker I (April, 1972) and Linebacker II (December, 1972). Linebacker II was the largest air campaign of the war, and we pulverized North Vietnam.

As for the comments about civilian deaths, I never advocated indiscriminate killing of non-combatants (if you had read all my comments on that thread you would have seen that). My comment was that sometimes civilians are killed, and it's unfortunate; but victory neccessitates making tough decisions and performing unpopular and uncomfortable tasks.

I have worked in France for a month every year over the past decade, and there are some good people there. They are fed up with the corruption & stupidity.

I've been enjoying the back & forth on the Iran issue. I think Kenneth and AI are both in the ball park on this one.

Zarkozy is leading in the polls to replace Chirac as President. de Villepin is running against him. We shall see...

The stick is the US threat to go ahead without UNSC support and deny the Russians & Chinese trade access to the new Iran. The carrot is to promise them such access in exchange for their support (or abstension).

How 'bout this one...

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in this town
See me and the boys we don't like it
So were getting up and going down

Hiding low looking right to left
If you see us coming I think it's best
To move away do you hear what I say
From under my breath

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in the town
Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
So don't you be around

Don't you be around

Tonight there's gonna be trouble
Some of us won't survive
See the boys and me mean business
Bustin' out dead or alive

I can hear the hound dogs on my trail
All hell breaks loose, alarm and sirens wail
Like the game if you lose
Go to jail

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in the town
Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
So don't you be around

Tonight there's gonna trouble
I'm gonna find myself in
Tonight there's gonna trouble
So woman please stay with a friend

You know it's safer

Breakout!

Tonight there's gonna be a breakout
Into the city zones
Don't you dare to try and stop us
No one could for long

Searchlight on my trail
Tonight's the night all systems fail
Hey you good lookin' female
Come here!

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in the town
Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
So don't you be around

Tonight there's gonna be trouble

O.K...that mostly makes sense to me...natural consequences of previous relationships may affect Iran's new government's disposition toward China/Russia, but it seems that would not necessarily be something the US can control and, therefore, use as a carrot?

Well...

It starts when you decide to buy one...depending on where you live, they can cost between $1,000 and $2,500.

Then they have some special medical issues that can arise...Infected nose creases, infections between the toes, breathing problems caused by extra tissue at the back of their throats.

They have a pretty short life expectancy...around 8 years.

I've had a lot of pets, but the bullys are the absolute best.

They were bred for bull/bear-baiting in the U.K. They would never have occurred naturally or survived as a breed for very long on their own.

#765 Kenneth:

Garcia is in the lead in polls, and he is pro-US conservative is he not?

Ah, no. Garcia's "APRA" party is hard-left, and as president from 1985-1990 he led the country to absolute disaster by, among other things, attempting to nationalize the banks. Not to mention, he stole tens of millions personally. Now he's making somewhat more free-market noises, but I don't trust that at all.

The reason Chavez is picking a fight with him is that the rival, Humala, is Hugo's favorite (indeed Chavez has called him "my pupil"). Also, Garcia is close friends with Chavez predecessor and political opponent Carlos Andres Pérez. (Who is the godfather of Garcia's son.) This is a spat between leftist. Very little upside for the US no matter who wins. At this point Garcia is arguably the lesser of two evils... but that's a DEEPLY depressing state of affairs.

They're VERY social animals...you have to be careful with them because they will run off with anyone who gives them attention.

They can look really fierce, but they're mostly just big babies even with total strangers.

Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more
My woman done left and took all the reasons
I was working for
You better not try to stand in my way
As I was walking out the door
Take this job and shove it
I ain't working here no more

I've been working in this factory
From now on 15 years
All this time I watch my woman
Drowning in pool of tears
I've seen alot of good folks die
And had alot of bills to pay
I give the shirt right off of my back
I have the guts to say

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Well, that forman he's a raggedy dog and night boss he's a fool
Got a brand new flattop haircut
Lord, he thinks he's cool
One of these days I'm gonna grow my top
And that sucker he's gonna pay
Lord, I can't wait to see there faces
When I get the nerve to say

(REPEAT CHORUS)

Take this job and shove it...

How cold does love get before it dies?

Yeah, baby we worked hard now here we are
Well, maybe we've paid more then it should cost
We got a California king sized bed then we got lost

But you used to have a fever for me darlin'

Now we're ninety eight point six degrees and fallin'
How cold does love get before it dies?

So many friends wound up alone
Didn't know just what they had till it was gone
So,baby lock that door and turn down the lights
There ain't nobody leaving here till we get it right

You used to have a fever for me darlin'
I used to have that fire in my eyes
Now we're ninety eight point six degrees and fallin'

Bulldogs are addictive, but they're high-maintenance dogs.

Yes, they are. And relatively short lived (unless you get an even more expensive miniature bulldog). They tend to have skin problems in the folds of their skin, and tend to only live 8 years. We had one, and I think she was our best dog ever. She loved to play frisbee, if you can imagine that. And could jump 3 or 4 feet in the air to catch it.

I've heard that... I really want a pug or a boston terrier.

I've had several Bostons. Our last one was a terror (a really bull headed male). They're good dogs, too, and balsy as hell - aren't intimidated by ANY other dog. I hope you can sleep through some serious snoring - all of ours snored.

I really want a pug next time around - everything I've heard about them is great except that they shed (but not many dogs don't shed).

You keep talking about Iranians being PRO-US, I don't see evidence of that...

Some pics of Iranians expressing sympathy for the US on Sep 18, 2001 were formerly posted at faithfreedom.org. Each had [Link: www...] tehran24.com at bottom of image. Found them here. (scroll to bottom) IIRC, the caption is Ali Sina's:

While many Islamists celebrated, thousands of Iranians poured into the streets to show their solidarity with the families of the victims of the terrorist attack at America. They wept bitterly. They were beaten by agents of Islamic regime and many were taken to custody. The difference between the Iranians and the Palestinians is that over 50% of Iranians do no more believe in Islam. Many of those Iranians who still are Muslims were as jubilant as the Palestinians in the above pictures.

It is not our nationality that defines our humanity. It is our beliefs.

Apparently the Arab funded media around the world let loose a barrage of propaganda at that time. I recall news of a Saudi sheik on that date suggesting the attacks were a plot hatched by the Moussad/CIA to make muslims look bad.

[Kahane] he was dreaming about Jewish Halachah state in Eretz Israel in the same way as Islamists dream about world Khaliffath.

I extremly resent your comment, I do not give a damn what Moslems do outside Israel, let them hack each other to death, let them flog and hang each other, G-d will set them right in the end.

All we Jews want is a land to ourselves, other religions have hundreds of them.

Israel was never a "democratic state", it never was supposed to be a seperation of Judaism and state. It will be ruled by the Sanhedrin with the Thid Temple sitting ontop of Mount Moriah.

For the last 2000 years our people have been dispersed all over the globe and these countries of the world have treated us as vermin, but we have returned and we will in the near future rectify the mistakes the Knesset has allowed.

Kahane was a Jewish "supremist" because he felt Jewish needs come first which is absolutly right, the Jewish people have been butchered for thousands of years, we do not forget the horrors of the past that have befallen our people.

Israel will become Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel, where no man has to be nervious walking down the street at night or be afraid of a suicide bomb when one goes onto a bus or a store or anywhere. Israel has turned into a new ghetto where one has to be scared of going anywhere in public, where the government which is supposed to help Jews only beats them and evicts and demolishes their homes.

For there to be true peace, Israel in the end will have to kick out all the arabs.

The present state of Israel is not the Israel, the Jewish people have dreamed about for the past 2000 years when we were massacred by the Romans by Edom.

Kahane Was Right And People Will Have To Know It In The End.

LOL!

Actually the son of a lizard is coming in a couple of weeks - nonic's son - he's staying here for three months - and i'm meeting him at the airport - with a big LGF sign! He's boarding at my daughter's place which is close to the CBD where he's working

I'll be showing him around - and also taking him to Queensland to visit my son

Okay W-lover HTML 101

when you place the & sign in front of certian words phrases and acronyms they become HTML entities.

moveon& trade; with out the space between & a nd trade; becomes moveon™

LLL& sup3; becomes LLL³ when the space is removed

Now you try

954 W-lover  Fri, May 5, 2006 9:41:18am

Obi-Wan:

I don't mind sharing with Mrs. Obi-Wan. Hope she & Mr Dubs don't mind us sharing! LOL!

955 newmelleman  Fri, May 5, 2006 9:41:43am

Kids' school board just approved the term "Christmas Break" to replace "Winter Break" (Public School)

Baby steps forward are better than retreat I suppose.
