Seattle police SWAT team members are preparing to enter a building in the 2050 Third Avenue, according to police spokesman Rich Pruitt.

Police say they've arrested one person. It's unclear the extent of any injuries.

I was just about to leave my building on 4th Ave, and heard the news. It's happening 4 blocks away.
Pray for the safety of the folks in the Jewish Community Center and for the safety of the law enforcement trying to end this thing.

To suggest anything critical of the country puts one at risk of being labeled the worst kinds of things.

Seen through another prism, it is like a white person being called racist for wondering why black kids can memorize rap lyrics but won't put the same effort into English 101.

Or like folks being deemed hostile to immigrants because they question why undocumented workers line up downtown for day-labor jobs.

Or being called a homophobe for suggesting that gays and lesbians are off base when they equate the push for legalized gay marriage to the civil rights movement.

Such issues, molecularly charged, are ripe for debate.

Yet none of these topics, from where I sit, comes close to setting off the kind of reflexive and negative reaction touched off by questioning Israel.

Doing so invites being called anti-Israel or anti-Semitic, damning labels that are hard to remove. Then the door slams on honest discourse.

After Rachel Corrie of Olympia was fatally run over by an Israeli military bulldozer, numerous Jewish and pro-Israel thinkers told me she had it coming. They said she was abetting terrorists -- a disputed claim.

Corrie wanted to bear witness to Palestinian suffering.

Such suffering doesn't negate the horror of Palestinian suicide bombers who spill the blood of Israeli civilians.

But even raising the plight of Palestinians invites vilification.

Are we to pretend Palestinian suffering isn't so bad?

Two people were wounded in a shooting Friday at the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and one person was arrested, police said.

The extent of the victims' injuries was not immediately known. A SWAT team was searching the downtown building for any other possible victims or shooters, police spokesman Rich Pruitt said.

"People got shot, some of our co-workers," Patti Simon said in a phone interview, her voice shaking. "I just got back from Israel and made it out of there a half hour before the rockets started."

Simon, who sells advertising for the federation's newspaper, was working on the first floor when she heard screaming, shots and what sounded like furniture crashing on the floor above.

"We heard this horrible screaming on the floor above us and shots," the 52-year-old said. "We didn't know what was happening."

Simon called up to her co-workers on the second floor, but got no answer, so she called the police and fled the building.

One person shot in the abdomen and another shot in the arm were being taken to Harborview Medical Center, KING-TV reported.

Police blocked off several city blocks to investigate.

Simon said the federation building has security.

"Somebody must have lied their way in," she said."

Police could be looking for another alleged suspect who may be on a nearby roof top. It's unclear whether any other arrests have been made.

Several witnesses said they saw a man walk up to the entrance of the building and shoot a woman in the leg. The man then walked into the building and made it up to the roof.

Witnesses said they heard one shot while the man was on the roof . The man then went back inside and witnesses said they heard several more shots.

The kinship we naturally feel for those who are also under attack from Islam (in this case, Israel) is threatening to some. Moreover, having read the entire thread, there have been at least 3 tellings of exactly the same story.

Here in NYC, I've been to four synogogues in the last few years and they all had these guys with the ear piece and jacket sleeve microphone (like the USSS) at every door. And they were fairly clearly armed.
This is by no means to blame the Jewish Center, but it would seem evident even to a goy like me, and especially these days, that buildings where Jews congregate need armed security guards. I know that sucks, but I'm afraid it's a fact of life here these days.
