-RetweetReuters Pulls Phony Photo

Sun, Aug 6, 2006 at 7:34:49 am PDT

Reuters admits altering Beirut photo. (Hat tip: LGF readers.)

A Reuters photograph of smoke rising from buildings in Beirut has been withdrawn after coming under attack by American web logs. The blogs accused Reuters of distorting the photograph to include more smoke and damage.

The photograph showed two very heavy plumes of black smoke billowing from buildings in Beirut after an Air Force attack on the Lebanese capital. Reuters has since withdrawn the photograph from its website, along a message admitting that the image was distorted, and an apology to editors.

In the message, Reuters said that “photo editing software was improperly used on this image. A corrected version will immediately follow this advisory. We are sorry for any inconvience.”

Reuters’ head of PR Moira Whittle said in response: “Reuters has suspended a photographer until investigations are completed into changes made to a photograph showing smoke billowing from buildings following an air strike on Beirut. Reuters takes such matters extremely seriously as it is strictly against company editorial policy to alter pictures.”

“As soon as the allegation came to light, the photograph, filed on Saturday 5 August, was removed from the file and a replacement, showing the same scene, was sent. The explanation for the removal was the improper use of photo-editing software,” she added.

Earlier, Charles Johnson, of the Little Green Footballs blog , which has exposed a previous attempt at fraud by a major American news corporation, wrote : “This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation. Notice the repeating patterns in the smoke; this is almost certainly caused by using the Photoshop “clone” tool to add more smoke to the image.”

If Israel was smart, every Israeli govt. rep giving interviews today would make this an issue and demand to know what else the MSM is fabricating.

Chances of them doing it? Unlikely. There's a reason they're losing the PR war.

Congratulations Charles.

I wonder if you have come across this letter to PM Blair from Dr Denis MacEoin who has taught Arabic and Islamic Studies in Fez, Newcastle and Durham University, and has published extensively on Islamic topics.

An excerpt

Dear Mr. Blair,

I'm writing to encourage you to continue to do your utmost to see a just and realistic end to the fighting in Lebanon, and to support you in your determination to ensure that Hizbullah, an organization with a long history of terrorist activity against Israeli and Western targets, be not allowed to emerge from this conflict still intact and capable of regrouping, re-arming, and, in the end, growing strong enough to accomplish its long-stated goal of destroying the state of Israel.

Let me say, very briefly, that I take a particular interest in this conflict.

I used to teach Arabic and Islamic Studies at Newcastle University, but my specialization has always been in Iranian affairs, specifically aspects of Shi'ite Islam. I am also a regional coordinator for the Israel Peace Forum, and much involved in presenting an accurate and nuanced picture of the Middle East conflict as a whole.

I believe that your analysis of a wide arc of terror is entirely accurate, and that failure to act now against the spreading evil of radical Islam may expose this country, its allies, and many other nations round the globe to increasingly severe acts of terror that will shift, given time, to more conflict of the kind now seen in Lebanon, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

I know that international pressure for a cease-fire in Lebanon is intense, and I realize that time must be running out for you and those few nations who have seen the real danger Israel now faces. Please stand firm.

To leave Hizbullah largely intact would be to guarantee greater and bloodier fighting in the years ahead. The danger, as I am sure you are aware, is not only to Israel, but for the people of Lebanon, who may find themselves at Hizbullah's mercy.

[Link: www.jihadwatch.org...]

Read it all.

Generally those who teach Arabic or Islam, become apologists or propagandists for Islam.

This letter is most unusual.

It is also a good idea to send emails to PM Blair along similar lines. He is under pressure, and emails backing his position will help. Remember that Muslims in the UK and elsewhere, will be writing to Tony Blair as well.

A bit off point, but follow the logic.
A leading American Case on agency holds that a business is liable for damages even if an impostor causes them so long as the injured party had reasonable belief that the impostor was an agent of the business. Background facts were about a furniture store allowing an impostor to get posession of an order book, take orders and deposits on the store's premises.

In this instance it is more - the photographer was employed by REUTERS, the editor(s) are employed by REUTERS, the release was by REUTERS.
They're COLD BUSTED and know it.

Today's media are the Truman Show. Either that or Bill Graham Presents.

It reminds me of when Roddy Piper used to bite into his blood capsule after getting gacked in the back of the head with a folding metal chair.

Or Playboy airbrushing the nipples of their Pac 10 Women Edition.

Except here, they do it with little children and old ladies. They drag the corpses out like A Weekend At Bernie's and morbidly decorate an inflammatory Christmas tree with burning red flesh. Instead of tinsel and garland,,, limbs.

Meanwhile, a handful of rope & pulley guys, gaffers, lighting technicians and small pyrotechnic experts surround today's camera crew for their next Sundance docudrama gig. 'Get more pig blood for Gene Achmed Simmons! Quickly, he goes on stage in 5 MINUTES!'

It's astounding that he took the time to add buildings in and move the left side of the horizon up by a good amount, and then totally botched the smoke. What the hell? It's like he just couldn't stand submitting a photo without altering it. Like he has a compulsion or something.

Al-Reuters "admitting that the image was distorted" is shocking in and of itself. But we all know it wasn't "distorted". It was quite simply altered for dramatic effect. Just like any good propaganda outfit would do. Which is what al-Reuters officially is, if anyone had any doubt.

155 Sleipnir  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 7:14:09am

Reuters seems unabashed. This is from their latest "news" report. Alistair Lyon, "Special Correspondent" for Reuters shows his colours:

Israel's definition of Hizbollah targets has included more than 70 bridges, as well as roads, ports, airports, radar stations, television and telephone masts, factories, farms and countless homes pummeled into ruin by bombing across Lebanon.

Source

"Israel's definition of" - we're meant to assume that Israel is hitting targets that have nothing to do with Hizbollah and that it doesn't need to merely for the sake of it?

"countless homes pummeled into ruin" - in reality, or in photoshopped pictures from Reuters? And if you know it is "countless" at what figure did you stop counting? And how do you know there were any hit that weren't either used for weapons storage or hit by mistake?

156 The Monster  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 7:15:40am

138 Windhorse
Too right. As Allahpundit demonstrated last night, a true Photoshop virtuoso could make a realistic-looking picture in a few minutes. Now that we know that Hajj has faked one picture, every picture he has ever taken, and ever takes in the future, is suspect.

Not that we assume that he always modifies the picture after taking it, but since he's one of the people who took the shot of the Miraculous Immaculate Blue Binky, we have to wonder if he didn't supply the Perfectly Pristine Pacifier himself. I'm not trying to split hairs here and say that it's OK to kill kids who are too old to use pacifiers. But clearly Bin Göbbels thinks it scores sympathy points to make the child look older or the smoke darker and more voluminous, or Green Helmet's face shows more grief.

There have been a handful of times that the local news media has covered a story of which I had direct knowledge. Every time, they get something wrong. I assume those are due to sloppy reporting. In this case we have evidence of deliberate deception. We cannot give the benefit of the doubt in the future.

157 barryg  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 7:16:02am

In any other profession this would be considered malpractice. A hospital would be sued blind if they did something like this, an accountant would be indicted. But somehow, because its a far-left communist Muslonazi, everything is okay.

Here's the deal: the leadership is unwilling to deal with this problem. At some point its going to become necessary to start targeting the media if they continue to work in concert with the enemy.

Perhaps the only good news is that this picture shows conclusively that Reuters works together with Hezbolla. When the lawsuits start being filed for civil damages for Hezbolla/Reuters war crimes, there will be a deep pocket to collect from. Time to start selling Reuters stock.

One question I have to ask is why would Adnan Hajj, who is clearly a skilled photographer, go to such effort just to add extra smoke to a photograph when he could just as easily offer "real" pictures like his dead baby shots, which are much more effective propaganda anyhow?

Because it was easy and he thought he could get away with it. And he almost did--except for LGF!

It's the same reason why somebody trying to forge Bush's National Guard documents would just use the default font on Microsoft Word, rather than take the trouble to purchase a genuine antique IBM Selectric typewriter and paper with old-style watermarks on EBay, which would have made the forgery much harder to discover.

But why should they have bothered when the managers at CBS or Reuters are so dumb they'll believe anything?

185 SlothB77  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 8:09:38am
Why isn't the AP or AFP or Fox or any other news agency pouncing all over this? Reuters is a direct competitor. They have been faking photos. This is your chance to take market share people! CBS, here is your chance to make a comeback.

193 FutureRepublican?  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 8:29:27am

Slightly OT (although it can be said that the true topic here is a lying mass media):

Someday I hope someone will attempt a definitive examination of whether the MSM mounted a bloodless internal coup that successfully toppled a President in 1974. When it was finally revealed a year or two ago that Deep Throat, far from being the nobly anonymous patriot the MSM swore he was all those years, was actually a disgruntled Federal employee who had been passed over for promotion by Nixon, my jaw metaphorically dropped for days!

It was Deep Throat's "revelations" that fed the media machine that fed the Congressional hysteria and hearings that directly led to the unprecedented resignation. Timely knowledge that this "source" may have had an obvious ulterior motive for his selective "leaks" may have led to a dampening of the hysteria, and history may have been very different.

My jaw dropped metaphorically lower when Sandy Burger was caught stealing and possibly altering CLASSIFIED documents from the National Archives during the 911 Commission hearings, for the apparent purpose of covering up for the previous Democratic administration. I waited for the same Bob Woodward, who is still at the same Washington Post!, to launch the same type of vigorous investigation into what was going on here, who hired Sandy, who knew what and when did they know it, etc. You know, the same type of vintage, no-holds-barred Woodward investigative journalism that he expended against the Republican Nixon. NOTHING HAPPENED at that newspaper.
At the very least, I would have expected the current generation of investigative reporters at the Post who have been mentored by Woodward, and maybe even entered journalism due to the example of his Watergate reporting, would have JUMPED at this obvious blockbuster of a story. NOTHING.

On a personal level, I no longer read the Washington Post, and am therefore one small cog in the declining circulation of such liberal newspapers. On a national level, I am metaphorically more and more concerned ("scared" would be too strong a word, though it may someday come to that) that our media has become a Frankenstein monster over the last 30-40 years.

Kudos, Mr. Johnson, for all your magnificent work!

The Reuters "apology" is so utterly lame. It reminds me of when I catch any of the middle schoolers with whom I work in the act of doing something really stupid or malicious. The kids are always so quick to say "Sorry!" as a ploy to get them out of trouble as speedily as possible. When I confront them and ask, "Are you sorry that you did it, or sorry that you got caught?", they just look at me, momentarily stunned as their adolescent mind determines the best way to answer.

So, Reuters, are you sorry that you did it, or sorry that you got caught?

Thank you, too kind.

My point is always the same, I try to suggest to the leftist readers who could perchance (!) be here at LGF that their intellectual and moral life is made miserable by their FAITH in the ideologies and in the lies that the subversive apparatchiks spread all the time and since one hundred years ago or so.

A fiFth column could maybe still be somewhat "heroic", a fiLth column of rich and spoiled seanpenns and michaelmoores and barbras, of kennedys whocantswimtosavealife, of traitors who speak with the enemy during a war (kerry, with the NorthVietnamese), of traitors like Great Chief Sitting BullSHIT ward churchill who REJOICE for the DEATH of their Fellow Americans and say they deserve it, of cut-and-runners who want the defeat of America as murtha... is the lowest level you can fall, there is nothing lower (unless you talk about personal matters, in which the BTK is infact lower).

I just hope some individuals CAN read and think again.

Many here come from the left and are sincerely sorry for every single day they spent in that dungeon.

Elated because you managed to see through their lies AND made them admit it.
Terrified because not all people use the internet and have to rely on the regular TV news or on the papers.

Congratulations, Charles, on doing a great job in exposing this fraud!

Now, I would like Reuters to find out who was the person who committed this fraud. Was it the photographer, Mr. Hajj, or was somebody else in on it? And why did it escape the notice of the layers of editors at Reuters?

Why the ?

I am a registered Independent. Always considered myself an Issues, rather than a Party voter, although as a practical matter I overwhelmingly voted Democrat.

I voted for Bush in 2000 because my good-old American common sense had already convinced me that Gore was an idiot. Ever since the 2000 election, I have become more and more disillusioned with the Democratic Party (for many reasons, not just Gore), and now all the Issues I care about are swaying me to vote Republican.

Now the answer to your question: Never having belonged to an organized political party, I wrote my state Republican Party before the 2004 elections. I described my concerns, and asked point blank in my letter why I should join the Republican Party. Anyone with common sense reading that letter would have realized that I was practically begging for an excuse to join. Never got an reply. Not even a courtesy form letter requesting a donation. Nada. Zip. Being so disillusioned with the Democrats, I don't know if I should jump through hoops to join a party that is too complacent to recruit new members.

I don't know - maybe the Republican Party is almost as bad at PR as the Israeli government.

Earlier, Charles Johnson, of the Little Green Footballs blog , which has exposed a previous attempt at fraud by a major American news corporation, wrote : “This Reuters photograph shows blatant evidence of manipulation.

That's a decent start by Reuters at repairing their public image, but I'm afraid that even previous to this attempt to defraud for propaganda purposes I was so disillusioned by their reporting and news photos, that I doubt that I will ever be able to trust them.

I didn't trust them from the start, so Reuters may have reached a bridge too far.

214 loudnoises  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 10:07:46am

I covered this topic indirectly in my latest blog post about the overarching Arab strategy against Israel - which depends on stuff like this for one prong.

The idea was changing the focus of the conflict. I once participated in a workshop that showed a video from one angle. In this video you saw two apparent thugs tackling a woman carrying a purse. You left feeling great anger at these scoundrels for attacking a helpless woman. Then a broader video was shown, allowing the viewer to see a man standing on the roof of the building they were walking next to, about to drop a brick down towards the street where the woman was walking. Rather than being thugs, the two youths were saving the woman. Similarly, you get one viewpoint when the map shown is mighty Israel against the Palestinians, and another viewpoint when you see the massive Middle East [and broader Muslim world beyond] standing against small Israel.

Full post is at [Link: loudnoises.info...]

What is unbelievable for me is the fact they don't have enough material, apparently, to achieve this end without doctoring. Are you really telling me that in what Israel itself admits is a massive air-war they couldn't find more shocking images than the original here for western consumption?

It seems to me that not only are these guys propagandists, they're lazy too. That's actually a good sign if they feel they're winning and have become lazy, because they're absolutely ruthless with their backs to the wall.

216 sss11 Not really needed. That is indeed what happened.

I agree with you that that may be what happened, but I respectfully disagree that it doesn't need a second close look that only hindsight and subsequent developments can give to historians (including future biographers of Woodward & Bernstein?).

"Not really needed, that's what happened" is roughly equivalent to saying that Pearl Harbor is sufficient explanation for World War 2. We're talking about eliminating a duly elected (landslide elected, I believe) President of the United States. If a "coup" is what occurred, that's HUGE, and most of the American public doesn't even have a clue that the question is worth asking!

Just my opinion. And just to be clear, I am NOT saying that Woodword and Bernstien deliberately intended to go after Nixon - I am saying the possibility of asking the question was raised in my mind following the eerie journalistic non-reaction to the contents of Sandy Berger's socks and pants, especially by Woodward, who should know better.

Actually, this kind of "journalism" makes me very sad for what was once an important field with deeply-held ethical principles. Add Rathergate and the photoshopped LA Times soldier photo, and one really has to wonder how the hell we've gotten this far down the road. To think about how blatantly we've been lied to- it's scary. How much propaganda-disguised-as-news is there that we'll never know about?

The sad thing is, a lot of people still believe the MSM BS they see because they just don't know any better. Keep at it Charles, we need ya.

230 really grumpy big dog johnson  Sun, Aug 6, 2006 11:14:36am

I just started thinking hard and clear about Reuter's response, retraction, and posting of their claimed "correct image".

Since we must go with the presumption that this organization is dishonest in their business practices (and we MUST assume that), I'm going to make a clear claim about my personal belief about Reuters and their actions.

Reuters said that they suspended the photographer. That implies that he snuck one past their editors. But Reuters then publishes what they claim to be the original, unaltered photo!

Is it only me that sees the problems here? Here is what I assert the current state of affairs is:

1. If Reuters was in possession of the original and the altered photos, then it could not have been altered by the photographer without their prior knowledge and acquiescent to this fraud.

2. That Reuters, since we know that they were in possession of both the unaltered and altered versions, had to have willfully committed photojournalistic fraud for the purpose of making the bombing seem worse, thus siding toward increasing public sympathy toward a known terrorist organization.

3. And that in knowing that, and understanding what the possible ramifications could be, Reuters has tried both in print and in photojournalism to hide their original fraud with intent by perpetuating a second fraud, this time with the intent of damage control.

4. By attempting to control the damage to their reputation, they have made a grave mistake. And further, I don't believe that the photo claimed as the unaltered original is real, either. I believe that we have every reason to believe that the substituted photo has in fact been altered - likely by their absolute TOP photoshopping expert - to make it seem very much like the alteration of the original photo wasn't all that much.

Yeah, Reuters, I'm still calling you out! You are still lying to us about your original lies, aren't you? YOU ARE THE WORST KIND OF SCUM!

Here is an article you will enjoy

Stupidity has its place
Rod Liddle

How stupid does one need to be to get a job reading the television news? Is it actually beneficial for TV newsreaders to have, in lieu of a brain, a plate of lime jelly?

Last week the debate was raging once again about the contentious and important point as to whether the newsreaders write their own copy, read someone else’s or simply make it up as they go along. Angela Rippon reckoned that she had never heard of a newsreader writing stuff, but her modern counterpart, the babelicious Sophie Raworth, claims that they do the writing and adds that she has a postgraduate degree in journalism.

This is the nub of the issue: what on earth is there to learn about journalism at postgraduate level? The point and purpose of our lowly, occasionally useful, trade could be scribbled on the back of a postage stamp and would easily be comprehended by a 14-year-old hoodie with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and a carrier bag full of glue. Who has decided that it must be dignified with a doctoral thesis?

Nor is reading the news even what one might call “journalism”. It is an even simpler business called “reading”. All that the BBC demands of its female newsreaders is an ability to read in an impartial way words like “Israel has murdered more Lebanese children again today” from the teleprompter without belching or lisping.

Persian Journal has cited a French language article that claims an anonymous Hizballah operative revealed that Qana was staged by Hizballah. The post says that disabled children were placed there and rockets fired from the building in a deliberate attempt to provoke an Israeli bombing, another "atrocity" to scuttle plans to press a ceasefire on Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

It also says that Qana was selected because it had previously been the site of an "Israeli atrocity", and that they felt the propaganda value would be greater for a "Qana II".

Yeah, that's the way I see it, too.
