It used to be, in the old days, that "non-aligned" meant aligned with neither of the two competing superpowers: the US or the USSR. But now that the USSR is no more, the "non-aligned" nations have nothing against which to "non-align" themselves except the only surviving superpower/alliance: the US and it allies.

As a result, the "non-aligned" nations have ended up stepping into the role that the USSR/Warsaw Pact used to hold: an alliance of nations in opposition to the US and democratic capitalism.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad greets Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

What?!?!? What the hell is Singh doing there? Every other person depicted at this summit is a tinpot dictator or totalitarian jerk. Singh is a moderate leader democratically elected from a pro-US nation.

India needs to re-think its membership in this supposedly "neutral" political assembly. If they want to take their place as one of the 4 or 5 leading nations of the 21st century, they've got to stop hanging around with the ankle-biters and backstabbers of the corrupt third world.

C'mon India: the Cold War is over! Step up to the plate and dump those fools! It's time for your "coming out party" as a world leader.

Put the dolls away.

43 FearlessMinky  Fri, Sep 15, 2006 10:40:25am

I was going to ask "not aligned with whom?" but Zombie already answered that.

What I see here is an attempt by a lot of fairly inconsequential nations with pathetic excuses for armies trying to band together and make themselves look important.

Reminds me of how someone once quoted me the urban legend about a pack of Chihuahuas being able to take on a bear. I followed that by asking, "So what do they do? All get together, yap in unison, and the bear comes a-tumblin' down?"

(It actually reminds me more of a few incidents in public school where I dared to defy "conventional wisdom" and got shouted down by the groupthinkers. The only reason why I didn't win the argument was because I couldn't be heard for all the chanting of "stupid hater! Stupid hater!")

Its an almost horrifying comment that an outright racist like Ian Smith can turn out to be right. The unemployment rate in Rhodesia is 80% these days with a 1000% inflation. But Mugabe sure do look fattened up, doesn't he?

For the most part, they would be better off renaming this the "Meeting of Kleptocracries". But what they heck, blame the social conditions on everyone else. It has worked for centuries and probably will not change in the future.

"What makes anybody think that stepping across an imaginary line on the earth qualifies them to be a citizen of that country. They come into our country without going through any official procedure at all not even disease control. A deadly epidemic could well cross our border and be well on it’s way to wreaking havoc on millions of people before we even knew about it. Millions of uncontrolled and undocumented people crossing our border is madness. Nothing good will come of it and the potential for disaster is overwhelming." - Charlie Daniels

67 Quella  Fri, Sep 15, 2006 10:50:59am

I too was wondering what Singh was doing in this crowd of dictators and world piles of vomit. India should rethink its leadership and world strategy, if it has its leader attending such a horrible summit.

Maybe they should bring back the BJP. They seemed to have the right idea. But that said, there is a real problem in India concerning the Islamists that make up 20% of their population. Look at the comical double standard: prior to the formation of Pakistan, Hindus lived in present day Pakistan and Bangladesh just as Muslims did. Now, there are hardly any Hindus living in either country, and yet India is 20% Muslim. That's right, Hindus fled Pakistan, and yet Muslims were allowed to stay in India! (I know the history is more complicated than this, and that there was killing on both sides, but this is the essential truth)

Yet if you call out the obvious, you are labeled "Islamophobic."

Pffft.

73 Paul  Fri, Sep 15, 2006 10:53:27am

During the Cold War the so-called "non aligned" movement was a front group of leftist and Third World dictatorships that always supported the Soviet Union. Now it has morphed into a ugly alliance of communist relics, Muslim theocracies, and Third World scumbags united only by their hatred of the United States, Israel and the West.

A better argument for withdrawing from the UN, and kicking its parliament of whores into the Altantic, I've never seen.

Nations which can't make a go of it because they're run by genocidial despots, can't get out of a socialist mindset, and won't guarantee their citizens the rights that Gitmo prisoners enjoy, make common cause with the likes of dinnerjacket, to give the world's last, best hope for peace the collective finger. India's doing what it thinks is in its own interests. It has been a member of the nonaligned crowd from its inception - and figures it carries some weight there.

It could also be pushing a pro-Democratic/pro-US line, as a counter to the other threats in the region - and India has to know that a nuclear Iran poses as big a threat to India as it does to the Israelis (and everyone else in the ME/world for that matter).

They're probably holding their noses at attending this summit.

HAVANA - SEPTEMBER 14: People walk past a billboard along the Malecon that reads "Coming Soon to North American Courts, The Assassin, with Posada Carriles and George W. Nations with as much oil as Venezuela and Iran have are consequential whether we like it or not!

We have solutions to that--like drilling stateside, or investigating alternatives. And nuclear power. You can't tell me that nuclear power is not viable.

Plus, it allows for other--ahem--interesting uses. After all, if Iran has a right to it...

It wouldn't take much to make them a bunch of shrill, tiny voices in the wind.

I now have a new goal in life. I want to be a chef. I'm going to go to culinary school, learn the craft, and humbly work my way up the ladder of the world of hash slingers. Once I've mastered my skills as a cook, I'll apply for a job with caterers that serve U.N. summits. I'll start at the bottom, working hard and accepting any task thrown my way. When I finally accomplish my goal of reaching the top rung of chef's that are privileged enough to serve such a cadre of important people, I'll reveal my true intention; to pee in the soup of all those titans of villiany!

The axis(s) of evil... lead by Kofi himself.
I can't help but think of this passage. It speaks volumes.

Psalm 2:
Why do the nations rage?
Why do the people waste their time with futile plans?

The kings of the earth prepare for battle;
the rulers plot together
against the LORD
and against his anointed one.

"Let us break their chains," they cry,
"and free ourselves from this slavery."

But the one who rules in heaven laughs.
The Lord scoffs at them.

Then in anger he rebukes them,
terrifying them with his fierce fury.

For the LORD declares, "I have placed my chosen king on the throne in Jerusalem, my holy city."

The king proclaims the LORD's decree:
"The LORD said to me, `You are my son.
Today I have become your Father.

Only ask, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance,
the ends of the earth as your possession.

You will break them with an iron rod
and smash them like clay pots.' "

Now then, you kings, act wisely!
Be warned, you rulers of the earth!

Serve the LORD with reverent fear,
and rejoice with trembling.

Submit to God's royal son, or he will become angry,
and you will be destroyed in the midst of your pursuits--
for his anger can flare up in an instant.
But what joy for all who find protection in him!

OK...Sorry...Sean Hannity this is the last day I listen to your crap...He just said...this is not about Islam or the Prophet Mohammad...Sean you have just shown you are Ignorant of Islam or what the hell this war is about

Hey Sean...

Qur’an:24:55 “Allah has promised to those among you who believe and do good work that He will make them rulers of the earth. He will establish in authority their religion—the one which He has chosen for them.”

Try this...

Quotes from Osama bin Laden:

"We should fully understand our religion. Fighting is a part of our religion and our Sharia [an Islamic legal code]. Those who love God and his Prophet and this religion cannot deny that. Whoever denies even a minor tenet of our religion commits the gravest sin in Islam."

God forbid you should listen to an EXPERT on Islam...

Expert: No peace with Muslims, ever
'Nuclear weapons for apocalypse'

"How will they bring him? By an apocalypse. He (the Mahdi) needs a war. He cannot come into this world without an Armageddon. He wants an Armageddon. The earlier we understand, the better. Ahmadinejad wants nuclear weapons for this," Sharon declared.

Sharon has in the past insisted that the Western world was engaging in great folly by differentiating between radical and peaceful Islam. “All of a sudden we see that the greatest interpreters of Islam are politicians in the Western world,” he wrote. “They know better than all the speakers in the mosques, all those who deliver terrible sermons against anything that is either Christian or Jewish. My questions about the "Dog" situation are...

Mexico never extradites U.S. criminals back to us, do they?
Why are we sending them an alleged criminal (or three)?

This next one is interesting, especially in light of the two Border Patrol agents who were convicted for shooting at a drug-runner/illegal alien who was fleeing, and others were providing covering fire...

Why are we pandering to a corrupt third-world country that would collapse if we sneezed on it?

This question has given me a headache that not even Tylenol has remedied.

Look at it from the high school analogy. George Bush is the teacher's pet, has a pretty girl friend, is a good student, and star running back. Not only that, but he's driving a 2006 Corvette to school.

This group is representative of the outcasts that hang out at the smoke hole during lunch, can't get their license because they can't pass the written test, and they wait for everyone but the janitor to go home so they can play doctor in the boy's locker room.

They sit around as a group making up secret codes with their hands in the pants and wearing mirrors on the tops of their shoes to look up the girl's dresses.

It's good they have a friend. It's all they got.

You might be right -- could be a grenade. Carriles is suspected of various violent acts.

For the curious:

Carriles is an anti-Castro extremist suspected of various violent acts trying to overthrow Castro. He is currently "being detained" in the US (presumably in jail or under house arrest) pending decisions what to do with him. He's 77 years old, has had cancer, and is in bad shape apparently. He was tortured in overseas jails, and escaped and fled to the US where he was arrested. Cuba is demanding his extradition, so they can slowly torture him to death. The case is currently unresolved: the US says he cannot be deported back to a place where he will be tortured to death, even if he is an unsavory character.

This issue is a major scandal in Cuba, but doesn't even register on the US mediasphere.

Good quote.

One minor translational issue: about verse 7, mine says "...Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee."

Hebrew (3205 via Strong's) means "cause to come into being," whereas a newer translation might give the impression of "adopted or attained sonhood."

I'm a stickler for accuracy. Especially when there are people out there who adhere to the notion of a "becoming" Christ.

I'm also in one of those moods again...*grin*

LGFer "humanity" (an Indian) was explaining that anti-western, anti-Christian feeling in India is a lot deeper than most of us realize, due to British colonialism. Even though we have a common enemy, the Indians still distrust the west, and the ruling class is also just afraid enough of their own muslim minority that they are dhimmified (although dhimmi status is not open to Hindus).

For Kofi and Raul Castro together:
1) And now, the Amazing Randi will make Cuba's economy completely disappear
2) Oil for food had nothing on the original scam - socialism under Fidel
3) Monty Hall, tell Kofi what's behind door number 2
4) Kofi couldn't believe his good fortune when he heard that Fidel was still alive. He needed to trade info on how to squirrel away his ill-gotten gains.

For Robert Mugabe, Aleksander Lukashenko, and Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, together:
1) Mugabe tells the others that the secret to success is ethnic cleansing and Chavez points over to Ahmadinejad to listen in.
2) Hugo wants Mugabe to raise the roof with his rendition of My Addidas.
3) Lukashenko can't quite figure out which one of the other two is the joker and the clown.

For Ahmadinejad and Lahoud:
1) You had me at hello.
2) You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips.
3) Say sweet nothings in my ear and I'll make sure I'll glow for ya!
4) Come here my pretty, and your little dog too!

Caliph” refers to a leader of the Muslim nation and in Arabic means the “heir” or “substitute” of the prophet Muhammad.

Salah noted that history tells of many occasions in which the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem was occupied by foreign conquerors, but the occupiers left after a short time, and thus will also be the fate of the Israeli occupation.

“The Israeli occupation will leave Jerusalem soon. It will happen sooner than is thought,” Salah said at the rally, which was held under the slogan “Al-Aqsa endangered”.

'Punishment from Allah'

The sheikh added that former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and President Moshe Katsav were “punished by Allah” after they plotted to bring harm to the mosque.

Sharon was punished because he planned to break into the mosque, and Katsav’s punishment came in the shape of the sexual harassment charges plaguing him after he supported the notion of dividing the mosque area between Jews and Muslims. The site is also holy to Jews as the site of the Temple Mount.

Former United States President Bill Clinton suffered a similar fate to Katsav’s, and after backing the idea of dividing the site he became embroiled in the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Salah declared that ideas to divide the site still exist, but he reassured his audience: “There are all sorts of plans to divide the al-Aqsa mosque but they will not succeed.”

Like you guys said, Yes he is a democratically elected leader from a country, where 74% of the people were found to love President George Bush and his country USA. But it is the remaining 26% that really makes Mr.Singh to go and attend these circuses.

First there is the history. Nehru along with Tito and Nasser were the founders of the NAM movement. So there is no way a PM of India can skip a NAM Summit.

If you are surprised that a pro-US nation is there in this circus, the NAM was never about non-alignment. It was just that you were not the USA or the USSR. This circus really used to be circuses when supporters of either bloc would almost come to blows during the height of the Cold War. The supporters of the USA would end up being the losers.

E2M #134:

Yes, I guess that's right. Still, it's a damned shame. Anyway, I know that the Hindus have the sharpest of all criticisms to give the Muslims. They have the most horror stories to tell. My best friend is Hindu, and her mom would let her marry anyone but a Muslim - she had family members killed in the 1947 Hindu-Muslim war. Unspeakable atrocities went on in that war that are still unspoken of, and there are scars that cannot so easily heal. This combined with the bombings in Mumbai and other places, along with Kashmir violence, ensure the fact that Hindus do not think so kindly of their Muslim breathren.

However, it's hard to act to stop the violence when acting will often mean siding with the West - a West of colonialization. Still, with the increasingly westernized and modernized India, and an India with a burgeoning tech sector, and with a scientific community as great as any in the world...I do see where India's allegiances ultimately lie. And it's with modernity and the West, and NOT barbarism - even with lingering memories of colonialism.

I met a Hindu man from the Punjab a while back. His comments about Islam would curl the hair of the most devoted anti-jihadist.

I am not surprised. He could have been one of those who had seen his family being killed during the post-Independence riots of 1947.

Across the Islamic world Friday, Benedict's remarks on Islam and jihad in a speech in Germany unleashed a torrent of rage that many fear could burst into violent protests like those that followed publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad.

By citing an obscure Medieval text that characterizes some of the teachings of Islam's founder as "evil and inhuman," Benedict inflamed Muslim passions and aggravated fears of a new outbreak of anti-Western protests.

In the long run, I think you're right, and one positive developemnt is improved ties between India and Israel. Those two countries need each other, both strategically and economically. Slowly, I think India will get over it, and move over to the western block of nations.

The other problem remains though; their elites are in as deep denial about the violent intentions of islamists as the elites of Europe. I'm afraid it's going to take a few more train bombings before their public starts to hold their leaders to account. Same problem as in just about every western democracy. The public wants to deal with it, and the leaders don't. Despite what Blair says.

Salah urges Hizbullah, Hamas not to release soldiers
By JPOST.COM STAFF

Sheikh Raid Salah, head of the Islamic Movement's northern branch, urged Hizbullah and Hamas not to release kidnapped IDF soldiers Eldad Regev, Ehud Goldwasser, and Gilad Shalit.

Salah declared that the organizations should release the soldiers only after Israel releases all the security prisoners currently incarcerated, and said that Israel should also release Israeli Arabs imprisoned for security reasons.

At the movement's annual rally, held in the soccer stadium in Umm el-Fahm, Salah also said that the day "was not far off" that the Israeli rule over Jerusalem would be thrown off, and the city would become a Muslim capital.

In response to Pope Benedict XVI's recent comments about Islam, which have sparked protests throughout the Muslim world, Salah condemned the statements, and hoped that they had been unintentional.

Police said that the rally, in which a few thousand people participated, was smaller than in previous years

The whole Pope Flap shows who really insults Islam. When have we ever seen the headline, "Osama fears for his safety after hijacking Islam"? When have we ever seen angry Muslim protestors burning images of Osama, instead of brandishing them for the cameras?

But when the Pope suggests Islam is violent, Islam becomes...violent. Here a question for you Moral Equivalence fans: Have you noticed that "radical Christians," although just insulted by Rosie O'Donnell, are not rioting or threatening anyone's life?

From the Hizballah News Agency, aka Reuters:

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -- The Muslim world's scathing reaction to Pope Benedict's comments on Islam is the biggest challenge to face the pontiff yet and raises concerns over his security, diplomatic and Church sources said on Friday.
"My personal reaction was: 'This is a striking statement. Was it a rare slip-up?'" one source said about the pope's speech in Germany last Tuesday.

"One has to wonder why the pope, who is normally so careful about what he says or writes, and has a reputation for extreme care, did not realize the reaction that this could cause," the source added...

Maybe he realized it full well, and was trying to argue for the futility of violent reactions such as we are now seeing.

"I was quite surprised (by the speech)," one diplomat said. "He has put himself in a tough spot and it will be interesting to see what he does next."
Indeed it will. Let's hope he has the courage to keep telling the truth

E2M #134:

Still, with the increasingly westernized and modernized India, and an India with a burgeoning tech sector, and with a scientific community as great as any in the world...I do see where India's allegiances ultimately lie. And it's with modernity and the West, and NOT barbarism - even with lingering memories of colonialism.

The Hindus generally do not have a problem with the Christians, except in the case of conversions by trickery. Ventriloquism and ordinary audi-video tricks are being used by Christian missionaries to denigrate Hindu Gods and use that to convert people to Christianity. Even a natural disaster like the tsunami of 2004, provided grounds for Christians to convert people.
After all, Pope John Paul refused to apologize for the brutalities of the Portuguese Catholics in Goa. He also expressed the view that India was a fertile land where the Christians could reap rich rewards. The Southern Baptist Church calls 800 million Hindus in India as sinners and calls on us to know Jesus as the true Lord. These baptists do not even for a moment think that they are addressing the followers of a 10,000 year old religion, which has withstood attacks from almost every kind of race that was prevalent in Eurasia - Greeks, Kushans, Huns, Muslims and Christians - and not collapsed. How can the followers of such a religion be sinners? (The Baptist Church also tried the same thing recently with the Sikhs.)

India has known Christianity much before Europe did. St.Thomas landed in my state of Kerala and died in the neighboring state of TamilNadu. Even today, there is a group of Christians called "MarThoma", who believe that they are descendants of the first Christians converted by St.Thomas himself. In many Hindu homes in Kerala, many Hindu homes, including mine, have photos of Mary and Infant Jesus, very similar to pictures of Yashoda and Infant Krishna, in the prayer rooms. Many Hindus go to churches to pray and many Christians go to temples. (Some temples do not allow non-Hindus inside).

Colonization has left many scars in India's psyche. Rather than try and solve the problem, the British took the eay way out and bifurcated the country. The tragedy of the bifurcation was that the Muslims who really wanted a separate country, stayed back in India, in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Bengal. They are still the 5th columnists in the country.

Pakistan has taken upon itself the mantle of being the messiah of Muslims the world over. Ever tragedy in the nearby areas has only helped that country take the GOP, the USA and West for ride and get ample financial assistance, which it uses to arm itself for a "War of 1000 years" it wants to fight with India.

If India is blamed for finding common cause with Pakistan, I guess the USA needs to be blamed for turning the other way, just in order to spite India, which was rightly or wrongly perceived as being pro-USSR. I do not deny that the then leaders like Nehru and his daughter Indira carried not only chips, but huge beams on their shoulders!

I'm going to be so bold as to address something you wrote. Please don't take it as my being ugly. Just a little perspective.

The Southern Baptist Church calls 800 million Hindus in India as sinners and calls on us to know Jesus as the true Lord.

They're following what they believe they've been told to do. It's in the Scriptures. If they're right, wouldn't it be the supreme act of hate NOT to say anything, and let all those people burn in Hell? So what do you expect?

These baptists do not even for a moment think that they are addressing the followers of a 10,000 year old religion...

Yes, they do. Believe it or not, some Christians actually bother to find out what we're dealing with. Again, it's not lack of respect for the tenure. It's a question of whether or not it's true. We're really interested in truth.

...which has withstood attacks from almost every kind of race that was prevalent in Eurasia - Greeks, Kushans, Huns, Muslims and Christians - and not collapsed. How can the followers of such a religion be sinners?

One: The insistence of people in believing something does not prove it true or false of itself--especially when a government outlaws the teaching of a contrary set of facts or so limits said teaching as to make it exceedingly difficult. Many people still believe the world is flat...
Two: The definition of "sinner" is nothing to do with the tenacity of one's religion, but everything to do with whether one is in line with God's will. If the religion in question is not conducive to God's will being done, then anyone adhering thereto is, by definition, a sinner. That's the way some Christians see it. No offense to you; just the reasoning.

At risk of coming off like a coward, I have to go and start supper. It's closing on that time, and I'm making spaghetti.

But just please be a little more open-minded about WHY some people do things you don't like.

Uhm, "dialogue" won't deal with the issue of whether or not something is true--especially if this "something" being true means that anything to the contrary is not true.

Christianity does not meld with other faiths. By definition. It doesn't work like that.

Either we must press on in our efforts to "show others the way" (peacefully and with truth in love, not with weak wrists OR with swords in fists), or we must deny Christ and our salvation.

Not likely. But it was a nice thought.

what christ says... the same was also told by krishna... and hindus are well known to meld cultures... as we also have one god like any other culture... and we call it parambrahm... but we set is as a abstract quality or a Interface... which you need to extend and to meld to match how you want to feel the god...

the point is not to support these, but to support a love, truth and freedom... majority of us are moderates.. and so we need to learn this.. to save and stand with the teachings of krishna and vishnu, who have given more respect to humanity... the way how we see god, and how we are feeling need a real active communication.. which is really missing

A well-placed explosive device might have brightened many days to come for many people.

Just one 2,000-pound bomb could make the world a much better place.

?>>>>Seconded.

Holy shiite, that's a "target-rich environment"!

One bomb over Havana could solve most of the world's problems...

but in case of christanity... they are just belive in killing historically...

then go back a little further in history and Jesus and the early church didn't kill. That is what I mean by restituting; going back that far. But not going in Jimmy Carter's direction either.

Killing is different than war and civil authorities need to make those hard decisions.

roger.. my point is also the same... what i speaking is that i can feel change in heart and thinking of christians. but a misconcept exist in north and west india... where people belive christians support killing of hindus, and fund islamic terrorism. the conversions put oil in this fire... i think its time to remove these misconcept...

in west i feel people ont know enough about hindus... and in india peole dont know enough about christians... and what they know usually are handful of misconcepts...

this is dangerous then...

Unaligned? This lot includes some of teh most vicious racists and genocide killers who breath the air. Mugabe, Armupasshole, Castro, Chavez and the grandaddy of them all, koffi the genocide man.

One well placed bunker bomb in the hall of thieves would rid the world of much suffering.

To Singh's credit, in that photo where he's shaking hands with Ahmagonnanukeyourdad his expression says he wants a sani-wipe when he's done.

I share your surprise and disappointment. The Indian PM shouldn't be mixing with the skepsels.

And I don't buy the residual-colonial-resentment excuse mentioned in the comments above. Sure, they may have a old grudge against the UK, but from where I sit, Indians don't seem to have any problem with the US, the focus of the so-called "non-aligned" states. In my part of the US, they're sweeping in like a monsoon, buying land, building businesses, building temples- these aren't the actions of people who hate Americans. These are the actions of people who want to be Americans.

...as for Annan being there, how much longer are we going to put up with him, or any part of the UN? President Bush should stand up at the upcoming opening of the general assembly and suggest that from 2007 on, they should convene in Beirut, or Gaza, or Mogadishu- and work among the people they're supposed to be helping. Instead of paying our regular dues, we can give them tents, bottled water, and leftover FEMA trailers so that they can set up shop among people more representative of the UN membership. G-d knows, any of those other places could use the tourist $$ more than NYC.

"Non-aligned" developing nations. I still can't get over that. What'll they think of next? "Moderate muslims?"

Let me clear this India at NAM up.

Any forum that we don't attend, gets our friendly neighbours the Pakis to raise their 'Kashmir issue'. We can't afford that.

If invited, we even want to go into the Conference of Islamic States (CIS) to balance off Pakis howling in those eunuch filled halls.

At the NAM, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will try to wrestle with slippery Musharaff.
Our PM just can't fix up an appointment with Musharaff and go to talk to that terrorist general.

So, the NAM is a conveninent excuse and a platform. We got to use all our cards and leverage all the ways to keep our foot on the Paki butt put.

Enough said.

India's largest trading partners are the EU, US and China... the members of the NAM have their own agenda. And we have ours.

Hope this clears some points.

By the way, US tango dancing with Pakistan and Saudi is wwaaay far uglier than PM shaking some doggy's paws! After all, we are in a region where its dogshit all over the place and kissing a dog on its mutt to encourage it to shit less is way better than US kissing its smelly Butt. Sorry, thats the truth and no apologetics is gonna wipe off that smell from yer faces.
