Another Islamist Laughs at the West

Mon, Nov 13, 2006 at 8:32:14 pm PST

Misogynistic jihad-promoting Australian Sheikh Taj al-Din al-Hialy has withdrawn all of his pseudo-apologies, and now says he won’t resign.

EMBATTLED Muslim cleric Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hialy has vowed he will not resign, complaining he is a victim of media propaganda and exaggeration.

The cleric has been under pressure to step down since he sparked outrage with his comments, in a Ramadan sermon in Sydney in September, likening immodestly dressed women to uncovered meat, and suggesting they invited sexual assault.

Asked on the Nine Network’s Sixty Minutes program tonight whether he had thought about resigning since news of his comments broke, Sheik Hilaly said: “Confronted with this campaign against me, no”.

“I accept the challenge and I’m not going to give in against any power,” he said through an interpreter.

Sheik Hilaly complained that his comments about women had been taken out of context.

“I am outspoken, and I have the courage to say the truth,” he told interviewer Ray Martin.

so in the Muslim world, the men are the cats? (p___y)

I am looking forward to clarity in this world.

It's coming time to settle all scores.

19 _elite76_  Mon, Nov 13, 2006 6:45:28pm

they had this muppets minions on TV the other night trying to whitewash his crap. Their excuse is that he was using a 'fire and brimstone' analogy common to preachers etc to teach a moral lesson.

How anyone could sit there with a straight face and say his entire speech which was very context specific and elaborate was somehow an 'analogy' is absolutely beyond me. How is "rape is 90% the womans fault, 10% the mans" an 'analogy'.

The only positive I can draw is that even the Australian liberal media was unable to whitewash this properly, with even the fairfax papers blasting the living hell out of him. He can't even speak English and he's lived here for THIRTY YEARS.

What he's done is actually a service in my view, as its opened the eyes of alot of Australians as to the true attitudes of the Islamic RoP over here.

20 Kragar (Proud to be kafir)  Mon, Nov 13, 2006 6:47:48pm

21 Jim C.  Mon, Nov 13, 2006 6:49:25pm

I have a standard response to "out of context" claims. It's in 2 parts.

1. "So provide the context." Oddly enough, they rarely do this.

2. "If there's a context where this garbage sounds reasonable, the context is also garbage."

Asked on the Nine Network’s Sixty Minutes program tonight whether he had thought about resigning since news of his comments broke, Sheik Hilaly said: “Confronted with this campaign against me, no”.

Because, you see, we're provoking him. If we would just back off and stop attacking him, he'd stop attacking women.

And he can get us a good price on the Brooklyn Bridge, too.

One of them named Pru Goward called for him to be chucked out. But then, she apparently still believes that feminism means equality for women, and not the currently popular idea that it means demonizing white men.

Now there can't be many people in Australia who haven't heard of Sheik Alhilali, the grand mufti of the Lakemba mosque in Sydney. And most of us have an opinion about him - But we reporters are supposed to put our personal prejudices to one side, to go in with an open mind.

Sheik decries extremism
[Link: www.theaustralian.news.com.au...]

THE nation's most radical Islamic cleric, Sheik Mohammed Omran, has issued a rare public statement denouncing extremism after a former follower accused him of being the spiritual leader of Australian jihad.
The statement, posted on the website of Sheik Omran's Ahlus Sunnah Wal-Jamaah Association, is a response to the claims made by a former follower and family friend, "Ibtisam", in The Weekend Australian. The statement says his association "denounces extremism in any religious context".

"Extremism is not from Islam and has been clearly condemned both in the Holy Koran and in the collection of Prophetic traditions," it says.

Extremism is not from Islam and has been clearly condemned both in the Holy Koran and in the collection of Prophetic traditions

That will pacify many people. It's going to be a very long war until everyone does their homework. In reality, of course, it's a subtle green light to most of the violence carried out by Muslims today. The Qur'an and Sunnah (Prophet's Traditions) are the template for the jihad 1,300 years ago and today.

Conversion, dhimma, or death?

50 israellycool  Mon, Nov 13, 2006 8:04:05pm

I've posted on this interview (including links to the video and the transcript) and summarized my "favorite" moments, including:
- After interviewer Ray Martin states "One of the criticisms of you by Australians is that you've been here so long but you don't seem to integrate. You don't even speak our language," Hilaly, who up until then had not uttered even a word of English, tries to sound "Aussie." He switches to broken English, saying "I think my age now at the finish — I'm 66 or 67 now. I think too late, mate."
- Hilaly trying to convince everyone that he has no problem with women wearing bikinis, or even topless women.
- After Hilaly's statement that Islam forbids the beating of women, Ray Martin asks "So if you beat your wife, what would she do?" Hilaly responds: "She hits me sometimes." Meaning that he admits to beating his wife.
- Hilaly's statement that he is "the most moderate of all Muslim clerics."
- Hilaly's inability to hide his true self, despite his best efforts to sound moderate. - After Ray Martin confronts him with his recent quote that the holocaust, which killed six million Jews, was a Zionist lie, Hilaly replies "I would like to stress that I condemned the holocaust. But there are hundreds upon hundreds of others who are saying that the figures are not correct." When asked why he would say such a thing, Hilaly responds "I say straightaway what is in my heart. I say it.

Sheikh?

According to Wikipedia, the database of mob-rule, liberal smugness, and a "locked down" article on Ted Kennedy,

Sheikh can have several meanings:

1) tribe,
2) lord,
3) revered wise man,
4) or Islamic scholar.

Since LGF clearly examines Islamic issues, almost on a daily basis, LGF members can clearly call themselves Sheikhs.

To deny the tribal element may invite being boiled in a pot.

Sincerely,

OT: Wear a Hijab/Turban Day

The idea for the event originated days after Alia Ansari, a 38-year-old Afghan woman from Fremont, was gunned down Oct. 19 as she walked with her 3-year-old daughter to pick up some of her other children at school.

Police have yet to find a motive in the Ansari case, but the perception among some in the community is that the shooting had to be a hate crime because Ansari was wearing a Muslim head scarf (hijab).

"We don't know whether it is a hate crime. We don't know whether she was killed because of her hijab. We don't know whether it was an
honor killing or what
," said Reshma Yunus, founder of SEMAH and one of the speakers at the event. "Regardless of the reason, we can still try to exercise our minds and become more comfortable with the diversity of our community."

In other words, we don't know whether she was killed because she wore a hijab by people who thought she shouldn't wear one or by people who did, but we'll go out with this initiative anyway.

More on the story:
Religious hate seen as motive in killing

The slaying marks the second time someone in the victim's family has been shot and killed in Fremont. In January 2002, Afghan community leader Rahim Ansari, 34, of Union City was shot and killed inside his business, Pamir Travel, in Little Kabul.

The suspected gunman in that incident, upset over a spurned romance, also wounded Rahim Ansari's brother-in-law, Zabiullah Ansari, a second-cousin of Alia Ansari. In an interview Friday, Zabiullah Ansari, 48, expressed hope that the right person had been arrested. But he said, "They don't know what happened.

Ok, littleoldlady, stand over to the side, an officer will get your statement later, oh one other thing. How well do you know Miquel? He seems to disappear when you appear. I can't find one witness who has seen the both of you together. Yes, your lawyer has been notified.

Now that you mention it, I have never seen littleoldlady and Amalie photographed together.

Of course you haven't! You don't think I want the comparison on film for posterity, do you?

Killian,

She confirmed it? (I was talking about the shoes.) Hmmm. Last time she changed incarnations I had to get used to a whole new personality. I hope she keeps that, at least, because I liked it a lot.

The hidden white victims of racism

Last week’s horrifying trial of three Asians is part of a worrying trend, says Brendan Montague
No one who saw Angela Donald giving her dignified statement that “justice had been done” outside the High Court in Edinburgh as the racist murderers of her 15-year-old son were jailed last week could feel anything but sympathy. For Margaret Massey there was more, though — a sense of fellow-feeling and anger.

Kriss Donald was snatched off the street by an Asian gang and subjected to a terrible ordeal: beaten, stabbed, doused in petrol and set ablaze. Massey’s son Lee, a rugby player, was also the subject of a racially motivated attack when he was set upon by a gang of Iraqi asylum seekers “out looking for someone” to hurt.

He and two friends were stabbed in a car park in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, in October 2003. Lee was then thrown into the air and suffered devastating brain injuries when one of the gang used a car to run him down. Three years later he has not fully recovered.

Massey still feels aggrieved that — in her view — the police inquiry was hindered by political correctness because officers feared that reporting that a white man had been so brutally attacked by asylum seekers would further fuel racial tensions following several such brawls in the area.

“The police didn’t charge 13 members of the gang even though I believe there was some evidence,” she says.

“If our Lee had run over one of the Iraqis he would have been arrested right away and sent to prison for the rest of his life. The police are nervous when white people are attacked. In this area this is happening more and more often.”

The killing of Stephen Lawrence 13 years ago sparked off an orgy of soul-searching throughout liberal Britain.

But we have never quite acknowledged that violence comes from both sides. Gavin Hopley, 19, was kicked to death by up to eight Asian men in Oldham in February 2002. Six men were convicted of violent disorder and theft offences but no one has been convicted of his murder.

An Asian gang was also responsible for the violent killing of 17-year-old Ross Parker, who was savagely stabbed with hunting knives during an attack in Peterborough in 2001. David Lees, 23, was run over and killed during a fight between whites and a gang of Asians in Prestwich, Manchester, only last month.

However, the debate about the white victims of racist attacks seems to have progressed no further in the past 10 years — because of fears of “political correctness” and the threat of the far right making political capital out of personal tragedy.

Sir Ian Blair, Britain’s most senior police officer, even attacked the press as “institutionally racist” in January this year because cases such as the killing of Tom ap Rhys Pryce, the solicitor, had gained more publicity than the equally terrible death on the same day of Balbir Matharu, who had tried to stop thieves ripping the radio from his car.

An extensive search of national and regional newspaper reports, however, shows that cases involving black and minority ethnic victims are widely reported, while there is an almost total boycott of stories involving the white victims of similar attacks. Is this because newspapers fear their reports appearing on BNP leaflets, or because the police are less likely to issue appeals for help?

Peter Fahy, chief constable of Cheshire police and spokesman on race issues for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said: “A lot of police officers and other professionals feel almost the best thing to do is to try and avoid [discussing such attacks] for fear of being criticised. This is not healthy.”

The silence means it is impossible to know how many white people are victims of racist attacks in today’s multicultural BritaiB

...If this were a novel, it would be chilling enough, but this is reality. The Islamofascists really do want to defeat America in Iraq and then use a failed state to replicate 9/11s (and worse) around the world. They say so, and their actions prove their intent.

Europe is in a permanent state of denial. The European media are clucking about the election results. They believe if America prematurely withdraws from Iraq, Europeans will be safer. In fact, Europe will be - and, in reality, already is - in its greatest danger since World War II.

Another reminder of the increasing threat to Europe comes from the head of British intelligence. The director general of MI5, Eliza Manningham-Buller, said as many as 30 major terrorist plots are being planned in the country and that future threats could involve chemical and nuclear technology. She said young Muslims are being groomed to become suicide bombers and that MI5 agents are tracking 1,600 suspects, most of whom were born in Britain and are linked to al-Qaeda in Pakistan. Prime Minister Tony Blair, who once called for the expulsion of seditionist radicals and the closing of some mosques, has been rebuffed by the British courts, which continue to treat terrorism as a crime problem instead of a war. Radical Muslims have flooded Europe, but Europeans pretend they will not be harmed if they imagine the enemy poses no threat.

Both a novelist and a realist could write the following scenario: In an effort to take Iraq off the table as an issue in the 2008 presidential campaign, the Bush administration adopts most of the provisions of the Iraq Study Group. In a modern version of the Paris Peace Talks, which allowed the United States to have "peace with honor" and withdraw from Vietnam (resulting in the deaths, imprisonment and "re-education" of unknown numbers of Vietnamese who wanted to be free), the administration then orders a "redeployment" of forces after "negotiations" with Syria and Iran (recommended by Blair). This allows just enough time for American troops to leave before al-Qaeda murders the elected leadership and takes over Iraq.

Meanwhile in the United States, mosques and Islamic schools paid for by the extremist Wahhabi sect, multiply like fast-food franchises. Terrorists are imported and recruited from prisons. Al-Qaeda announces that weapons of mass destruction have been placed in key American and European cities. They demand that the United States withdraw its protection of Israel. If we refuse, they threaten to detonate their weapons, killing millions of people. What president, or prime minister, will reject that demand? After capitulating on the installment plan, who will have the political or moral capital (or military capacity) to stop Armageddon?

#142:

The hidden white victims of racism

I've called it Caucasophobia, for the lack of a better word. I see two potential objections to this term. One is that negative feelings towards whites are less a matter of fear than of hatred and contempt, which is partly true. But I find Caucasophobia to be a useful phrase to counter claims of Islamophobia, whatever that is. I loathe the term “reverse racism,” which indirectly implies that white racism is the norm and non-white racism is just a “reaction” to this.

The other objection is that the term Caucasian technically refers to Arabs and Indians, too. However, in March 2005, peaceful white, French demonstrators were attacked by bands of black and Arab youths. One 18-year-old named Heikel added that he had “a pleasant memory” of repeatedly kicking a student, already defenseless on the ground. The sentiment was a desire to “take revenge on whites.”

Notice that these were Arabs attacking Europeans. I have also heard Pakistanis and Turks refer to Europeans as “whites.” I thus find it justifiable to use the term Caucasophobia of racism against people of European stock.

Muhammad: he mended his own clothes!

The Wall Street Journal, which should know better but obviously doesn't, has published a list of five recommended books about Islam (thanks to all who sent this in). Among them:

"Muhammad" by Karen Armstrong (HarperCollins, 1992).

To understand Islam, one needs to understand the central role played by the Prophet Muhammad in the religion's creation and propagation. Orphaned at a young age, he was a successful trader when the divine revelations began. In Karen Armstrong's sympathetic and sometimes academic profile, she argues that, unlike Jesus, who could be a pacifist because he lived during Pax Romana, Muhammad faced warring tribes across Arabia. She paints a portrait of a very human prophet who is expedient and clever, who loves women and--despite having multiple wives--even mends his own clothes. But at his death, divisions over succession lead to the murder of three of the first four caliphs, or leaders, who followed--setting in motion the Sunni/Shia struggles that continue today.

Things Just Got Worse
From champs to chumps,

By Thomas Sowell

In just two short years, Republicans have gone from being champs to being chumps. In 2004, the Republicans were voted control of all three branches of the federal government and most state governorships. Today, they are left wondering what hit them.

Now that Democrats are in control on Capitol Hill, President Bush has expressed hopes of getting a bipartisan immigration bill. The only bipartisan bill that can get past a Democratic Congress is an amnesty bill, which can be a down payment on another Republican defeat in 2008.

If the people in the White House do not understand how outraged their supporters were at this year’s attempt to pass an amnesty bill for illegals — virtually guaranteeing that even more millions will come — then it is hard to know what message they got from the Republicans’ recent debacle at the polls.

Immigration was not the only issue but it was part of the more general issue of betrayal, which includes the Republicans’ runaway spending, among other things.

If the Republican leaders have learned nothing from their recent defeat, perhaps some Republican supporters will. Some of the most baffling e-mails received from conservative Republicans before the election were those which said that they were so disillusioned and/or disgusted with the Bush administration that they were going to vote for Democrats in order to send a message.

This is the kind of emotional self-indulgence common among liberals but apparently some conservatives have now also come to see elections as occasions to vent their feelings rather than to choose among existing options for the future of the country.

Sending a message may have its benefits but — as with all benefits — the question must be asked: “At what cost?”

On the Left, it is acceptable to say things like “open space” or “alternative fuels” without any thought of the cost. What is new is finding the same spirit now flourishing among some conservatives as well.

As events unfold over time, perhaps those conservatives will reconsider whether it was worth it to “send a message” to President Bush at the cost of making Senator Pat Leahy chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Senator Leahy’s control of that committee virtually guarantees that the only kind of federal judges who can get confirmed are the kind who are likely to spend decades on the bench creating new “rights” for criminals, illegal aliens, and terrorists.

Was that price even considered by conservatives who indulged their anger instead of weighing alternatives? It is easy to say “the parties are no different” or “things couldn’t get any worse.”

People have said that before — and have been proved wrong before. Before the election of 1860, abolitionists said it would make no difference whether Lincoln or a Democrat was elected. But millions of people were freed because that prediction was wrong. ...

BERLIN - Civil rights activists filed suit Tuesday asking German prosecutors to open a war crimes investigation of former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and a host of other U.S. officials for their alleged roles in abuse at
Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison and Guantanamo Bay.

The 220-page document was sent to federal prosecutors by U.S. and German attorneys under a German law that allows the prosecution of war crimes regardless of where they were committed. It alleges that Rumsfeld personally ordered and condoned torture.

"One of the goals has been to say a torturer is someone who cannot be given a safe haven," said Michael Ratner, the president of New York's Center for Constitutional Rights, which is behind the litigation.

"It sends a strong message that this is not acceptable."...

Jihadists trash Muslim U.S. rep

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Why is Al Qaeda trash-talking Keith Ellison?

In January, Ellison, 43, will become America's first Muslim congressman. The Minneapolis Democrat, who converted to Islam while in college, got 56% of his district's vote in last Tuesday's election.

But since his victory, Osama Bin Laden's chattering goons have been jeering, not cheering.

In secret Internet chat rooms they call him "the first Jewish Muslim that goes to Congress."

Al-Qaeda to explode 30 jetliners and trains in Europe on Christmas eve
13.11.2006

Al-Qaeda may apparently be working on another grand terrorist act, this time for Europe. According to reports received from Western intelligence services, al-Qaeda’s terrorists prepare to explode 30 planes and trains across Europe on Christmas time. The terrorist act is said to be conducted at the end of December, when many people book Christmas tours or simply travel to celebrate holidays with their relatives or friends.

Al-Qaeda reportedly recruits most experienced Arab gunmen who participate in the guerilla warfare in Afghanistan. Acts of terror are planned to be conducted on board passenger jetliners departing from London ’s Heathrow airport in spite of the fact that the European Union has recently approved a set of strict rules regulating the transportation of liquid substances.

The leaders of the international terrorist network say that the White House in Washington is their prime goal. It was particularly said that Osama bin Laden’s organization trains a whole army - 12,000 terrorists – who will penetrate in the USA and attack the White House.

Scholar: Oppression of Women in Muslim Countries Not Widespread

Nov. 13, 2006

By Sam Gardner

The oppression of women in Islamic countries is caused by men misinterpreting the Quran and is not as widespread as portrayed by the mainstream media, a Fulbright scholar from Morocco told a University of Central Florida audience last week.

Fatima Amrani Zerrifi said the true interpretation of the Quran is not oppressive and instead lifts women up. The author and educator at Sid Mohamed Ben Abdellah Fes University in Morocco spoke to a crowd of about 50 students and community members on Thursday, Nov. 9.

Amrani gave an hourlong presentation, sponsored by the Women’s Studies Program and Office of Interdisciplinary Studies, that snubbed theories that there is gender inequity in Islamic culture. She said Mohammed was one of the first feminists.

Hernando County Commission Issues Resolution Praising Saudi Funded Muslim Group [CAIR] And Terror Linked Mosque

By Beila Rabinowitz, Director - MiltantIslamMonitor.org

November 13, 2006 - San Francisco, CA - PipeLineNews.org - On November 14, 2006 the Hernando Board of County Commissioners plans to issue a resolution to recognize the "caring spirit" of the Islamic community and the Council on American Islamic Relations [CAIR] for distributing "Ramadan/Thanksgiving" baskets to the needy. [Link: www.hernandotoday.com...]

This program by the Hernando Muslim community is da'wa, plain and simple, an attempt at creating the impression that the radical Muslim group - CAIR - and a masjid with ties to terrorism - Hernando's Barclay Street mosque - are benevolent organizations. This event is an exercise in Islamic proselytizing - "jihad of the tongue" - and therefore constitutes Islamism not altruism. [source - [Link: www.militantislammonitor.org...]

It is also an effort to co-opt a uniquely American holiday, linking it with a Muslim holiday to which Thanksgiving bears no relationship.

Severely OT.

On another msg board, someone actually used the follow as a logical proof that No Child Left Behind makes criminals, therefore Bush is a criminal himself:

No Child Left Behind = standardized tests = teaching to pass the tests, not teaching for learning = high school graduates that have no skills to make it in the real world = high rate of failure in life = high likelyhood of resorting to crime = jail.

I laughed myself silly and couldn't respond. Would it even matter?

179 3 wood  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 2:43:58am

Good Morning Lizards.

European economic growth mixed.

The German economy expanded at an adjusted 2.8% annual rate during the third quarter, with the traditionally strong exporting country getting the benefit of improving demand both domestically and from abroad.

2.8% is very sustainable, not bad, but not outstanding either.

Germany's economy rose 0.6% compared to the second quarter, though second-quarter numbers were revised higher to show 1.1% growth from 0.9% earlier, the statistics office said.
Economists had forecast a 0.8% quarterly rise in the German economy.
French and Italian growth also slowed down in the third quarter, leading to a 0.5% rise in euro-zone economic growth, against the 0.7% predicted by economists.
"This is bound to raise concerns that the euro-zone's fledgling recovery may be starting to lose momentum earlier than expected," said David Brown, chief European economist for Bear Stearns, in a note to clients.

Plus, the yield curve for the EU is doing some funky things:

Last week, the yield curve on euro-denominated government bonds briefly inverted, which also was taken as a sign that the economy could be slowing down.
Still, rate hikes may rise even if the European economy slows.

Good, that's just like an EU socialist to raise interest rates even as the economy slows down unexpectedly. Why don't you raise taxes too, while you are at it?

Like I say, it's just a matter of time until
the EU fails.

Friend's mom told me a teacher friend of hers had told her not to worry - by third grade they would all be on the same level. Does anyone else wonder if the sudden "let's talk nice to Iran?" is a feint- disinformation?

It is not a feint, it is not disinformation, it is not a clever ploy, it is not a trick to outsmart Iran.

It is feeding the alligator, crocodile, lion, shark and various other carnivorous beasts, hoping and praying that they will not attack you next. The writing on the wall about how Iran will be handled has been around for months, President Bush may have said all options were "on the table" but he never failed to stress and say firstly that he wants Iran to be handled via negotiations.

Negotiations with Iran & Syria are a direct result of that policy and don't think that President Bush didn't consult with Tony Blair before Blair made such statements. The population of the United States is being made ready for the inevitable, which is a nuclear armed Iran, negotiations, etc. We only have a few more months left before the Iraqi Survey Group files its report of suggestions and the odds are that Baker and the rest of his cohorts will suggest negotiations with Iran and Syria amongst others.

President Bush, poker player extraordinaire, shall make an announcement that will go something like this: "After careful discussions and deliberations, having reviewed what the Iraq Study Group report, having consulted with my good friend Tony Blair, etc. I have given permission for James Baker III to meet at the negotiating table with Iranian representatives in order to work out our differences."

Besides, it has been reported that President Bush has already given James Baker permission to speak with his Iranian counterparts. It may be a surprise for some, it will certainly not be a surprise to me.

Math does not need to be "marketed" better. It needs to be taught by people who know mathematics - which it currently is not and has not been for some years.

Both visual and rote components are required for a complete understanding of math.

Yup. Really, it's more insidious than that. They deliberately don't teach US history (except that the US is never right or good) such that the younger generations have no clue what went into achieving and maintaining freedom -- that much easier for their leftist overlords to take it away from the sheeple they've failed to educate.

Then there's the don't educate them, keep them dependent on the government part. Fifth and sixth generation welfare recipients in New Orleans, too damned stupid to get out of the way of a hurricane...

The other terms for the current math are

1. A river of knowledge, a mile wide and an inch deep.

2. A confusing presentation of facts that resemble a "Tokyo Nights" skyline. So confusing and distracting that no-one can focus on it.

Recently the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the ones who brought us "New Math" reversed their opinion, and stated that the rote memorization of math facts is a necessary portion of math.

I brought that up during a recent school "Math Night" meeting where the New Math was being extolled as the be all, end all path to success.

She failed to tell her that it was because the bright ones would have given up in discouragement.

I think some of the teachers give up in discouragement, too.

Last week a "Monitor" (i.e., head snitch and apple polisher for the Dept. Chair) sat in on my lecture and took notes on the class. Yesterday I get called by this snitch and told they are upset that I'm not teaching in the approved manner (I should be breaking the class up into groups and letting them "socialize", i.e., teach themselves), and they don't like my tests either. Said I could expect to get a call from the Dept. Chair and admonished. I told the monitor to tell the Dept. Chair (whom I'm certain was listening in on another line) that if she is stupid enough to make that phone call to me, they can look for another Econ Prof.

Even in uni economics now, huh? Sad. The elementary teachers never "gave up" - they just got replaced with a new crop that is barely literate themselves.

I'm seriously starting to wonder if we are not going to have to homeschool university too. The list of where we will not send the kiddo gets longer by the day.

Nope, but you had a cultural and religious background that values education above nearly all else. You didn't need nuns.

What we had were a bunch of blue-haired or green-haired old ladies who really knew their stuff and left their politics at home!

In my daughter's school the teachers in the English department are all liberals, the science teachers are all Republicans, and the history teachers at least make a show of being apolitical.

Except AP Government. That teacher is proudly conservative, as are almost all of the kids in that class. Makes sense when you think about it. Why would a liberal study the Constitution? Rules and laws are baaaaaad!

Guys and gals,

You will never revitalize the American public school system until you get a higher quality parent that not only demands results and believes in accountability, but who honestly love their children.

And from what I'm beginning to witness in the world today, I have decided the amoral, the slothful, the liberally confused, the selfish, and the stupid outnumber the sane people I see post here on the board.

If I'm wrong, how did Bill Clinton stick around for 8 long years acting more like a french whore than the leader of the free world?

Heh. I'm still, lo these decades later, trying to figure out what the hell all that nonsense RE "sets" was about. If they wanted to teach us Boolean algebra, why in hell didn't they just get on with it ? That's the only possible connection I've seen. And that just might have been beeter placed after algebra, IMHO.

Back in my day, 50's & 60's, teachers taught for students to pass tests. I can't tell you how many times I heard "pay attention, this will be on the test." Kids have always studied to pass tests, and in so doing they occasionally learn something. If it weren't for tests, the majority of students would do no studying. You will have a hard time convincing me that NCLB is the bad guy in this situation.

The difference is in the test. Back in the 50's and 60's you were given X amount of material to learn and then you were expected to sit an examination on that material.

NCLB is not that kind of testing - more like the California Achievement Tests we used to take. Very general really. But the teachers spend so much time teaching children how to take this kind of test that they have no time to teach content. Moreover, the stupid things are structured so that a "successful" school has to show better scores each and every year. The thing is though, those tests are "normed" so no matter what you do or how you do it, a full half of all students are going to achieve "below average." We cannot all score 98th percentile.

About 10 years ago, I considered creating a system to manage home-school education. One of the things I thought about doing was digging up some of the math, english, basic science, and history books that had been used in the 20s and 30s to cull out the ways things like math were taught (some things, like science, would need to be updated, of course). (A marketing angle was that these techniques worked so well for the Greatest Generation, they'll work for the current generation.)

The subjects would be modularized, with different versions of the same material, where possible (e.g., basic math from the 20s vs. a more current method). Parents could choose which they wanted for their children.

Rote memorization when combined with some of the concepts of new math is a good thing.

What NCTM did was cause an over reaction.
The rote memorization was totally skipped, and the focus was on what I call "Free Range Math".

Because the addition and subtraction tables were ignored, every time a student encountered a math problem, it caused a pause while the answer was re-investigated.

Commit the answers to memory, then explore the concept of how the answer was derived.

What that does, is allow the rapid processing of routine math problems.
It also allows the restructuring of off-beat or unique math situations to allow solving.

But when each common problem becomes an experiment in discovering the solution, you wind up with kids trying to make change for a dollar, and straining their brain.

It's not unusual for there to be some observations of untenured profs. I was observed also. However, I got to choose the profs and the days they would observe.

We use a fair number of adjuncts, and one of the other department chairs suggested dropping in unannounced on their classes. I told him (and the others around) that that was bullshit and an insult to the prof -- if there's any doubt, they shouldn't have been offered the class in the first place. If there are issues, there are other ways to uncover and remedy them.

You could have heard a pin drop

ROFLMAO! The NCTM got blasted from here to hell and back by the Professors of Mathematics group a while back is why. And virtually every US elementary mathematics curriculum got put through the shredder. They were scathing in their disdain of the NCTM agenda.

Not to mention that no matter how you cut it up, multiply it and divide it again, the foundation on which virtually all math sets is the multiplication tables. If you do not know them then you will much sooner than later have all of math tumble round your ears. Literally nothing that follows is comprehensible if you don't grasp multiplication.

No matter how bright the child, no matter how many games, puzzles and so on you use, the multiplication tables sooner or later have to be memorized. Rote is boring, but it is faster.

PUBLIC SEVERE WEATHER OUTLOOK

The SPC is forecasting ...severe thunderstorms expected over parts of the lower Mississippi valley tonight and early Wednesday... the NWS Storm Prediction Center in Norman OK is forecasting the development of a few strong tornadoes over parts of the lower Mississippi valley tonight through early Wednesday. the areas most likely to experience this activity include Southern and Eastern Arkansas, Northern and Eastern Louisiana, Western and Central Mississippi. Surrounding the moderate risk area...there is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms from Eastern Oklahoma and Northern Arkansas South to the Western and Central Gulf Coast. A very strong jet stream disturbance...with high level wind speeds above 130 mph...will sweep rapidly Southeast across the Central Rockies later today...and into Oklahoma...North Texas and the lower Mississippi valley tonight and early Wednesday. The disturbance will be accompanied by an intensifying surface low that will track East along the Red River valley this evening to near Memphis by dawn Wednesday. the low will draw warm and unseasonably humid air Northward from the Gulf of Mexico beneath the increasing Westerly flow aloft. As the warm humid air encounters the low and its associated warm and cold fronts...thunderstorms likely will form over parts of Arkansas...Louisiana and Mississippi. While some storms could appear as early as this afternoon...more widespread and intense activity is expected tonight through early Wednesday. Given the very strong winds and rich moisture available to these storms...and the uplift provided by the intensifying low.... Please read the latest public statement about this event.

Lots of that has been done christheprofessor...especially in math, reading and grammar. The one elementary math curriculum the Math Professors (who are all mathematicians that teach not teachers who math) liked is also one of the most widely used among homeschoolers. Quite good, I've changed it very little though I do supplement with NRICH. (google it if you're into math puzzles)

Virtually all homeschoolers use the same phonics programs that we learned to read on (none of that "cheating by sounding out the word" business someone mentioned a while back).

There are superb science resources available as long as you frequent NASA and stay out of the "science curriculum kits" arena, other than Lego.

The tough one to find good resources for is History - but even that isn't bad if you're willing to wade through piles of junk to find the gold.

Now, if somebody ever revived the Palmer Method they would make a mint.

What a MoronAnnan links Arab-Israel to broad conflict Mon Nov 13, 9:17 AM ET

ISTANBUL, Turkey - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Monday that any effort to stop growing violence between Islamic and Western societies must include an end to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Annan spoke after receiving a report from a high-level group of experts on ways to alleviate Muslim-Western clashes and misunderstandings.

"We may wish to think of the Arab-Israeli conflict as just one regional conflict amongst many," said Annan, who leaves his post at the end of the year. "It is not. No other conflict carries such a powerful symbolic and emotional charge among people far removed from the battlefield."

ALgebra. Ha. First year of it, class size about 30, bombed it completely. Summer school, class size about five, "A+" on every test. Went on to use algebra for about 15 years of computer programming in about five different languages.

Funny thing, the taxpayers in Florida decided to restrict class sizes, even though it would increase taxes. Politicians turned around and dumped "impact fees" on new home purchasers to pay for the additional cost of schools and teachers.

Call to bridge West-Muslim divide

A cross-cultural group of 20 prominent world figures has called for urgent efforts to heal the growing divide between Muslim and Western societies.

The chief causes of the rift are not religion or history, they say, but recent political developments, notably the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Their findings were presented to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at a ceremony in Istanbul on Monday.

No other dispute had such a symbolic or emotional impact on people, he said.

"We may wish to think of the Arab -Israeli conflict as just one regional conflict among many. But it is not," Mr Annan said.

"As long as the Palestinians live under occupation, exposed to daily frustration and humiliation, [recognize that language? bz]and as long as Israelis are blown up in buses and in dances halls, so long will passions everywhere be inflamed."

Sad part of about mathematics. If you can grasp the basics early, the rest will take care of itself.

In the 60s, I had an old elementary school principal who would come in one or twice a week and drill us on the basics. As we got older, he moved on to more challenging material.

When I had graduated from the 6th grade, we were well on our way to understanding algebra, trig, and some basic concepts of calculus.

Math in college was a breeze, even with the worthless math instructors I had in jr. high and high school.

Iran and Syria urged to help Iraq

The ongoing unrest in Iraq has prompted international calls for Syria and Iran to work with Western powers in seeking an end to sectarian violence there.

The White House has indicated it will consider talking to both countries.

President George W Bush on Monday met members of an expert panel known as the Iraq Study Group, which has been re-evaluating US strategy in Iraq.

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is also expected to call for Syria and Iran to co-operate in a speech later on Monday.

The UK Foreign Secretary, Margaret Beckett, has already said the two countries should be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

#277 CTP,

I remember once, when I was about 12, riding past the USS North Carolina and mentioning to my father that it weighed 35,000 tons, expecting him to be impressed that I would know that. His response was, "And how many pounds is that?"

Smart man! LOL. What's funny is I do the same to my kids with chemistry and math. My oldest daughter just ripped a 5 on both the AP Chem and Calculus test. I'd like to think I had something to do with that.

Truth be known, it was probably the "mom" genes they inherited but at least I gave it the old college try!

The balkanization of Germany

Germany’s Headscarf Scandal
By Stephen Brown
FrontPageMagazine.com | November 14, 2006

What a woman wears on her head may literally cost you your head in Germany.

That is what German politician Ekin Deligoz discovered recently when she called upon Muslim women in Germany to take off their headscarves. Deligoz, who is Turkish-born, has long expressed her opposition to the scarf’s wearing and wants Muslim women in her adopted country to lay it aside, believing it is a symbol oppression and patriarchy. There are more than three million Muslims in Germany and about two million are Turks or of Turkish descent.

“You live here, so take your headscarf off,” said Deligoz in a German newspaper.

But unlike the veil controversy in England where the Leader of the House of Commons, Jack Straw, wanted Muslim women to go about with uncovered faces, Deligoz, a member of the leftist Green Party in the Bundestag, has received numerous death threats as a result of her comments. Ninety per cent of the threats, the Green politician said, were from men. Also unlike Straw, Deligoz now has joined the lengthening list of European writers, editors and politicians, among others, who have to accept police protection in their own countries due to threats from Muslim extremists.

I read something somewhere that said a new Windows machine running IE and plugged into the Internet would be infested within 20 minutes with some sort of virus. That seems a little extreme, but you probably should consider a good virus and adware scan. If you ran IE for any length of time before installing FireFox, you could have picked up a little bug. I just reformatted my HD and reinstalled operating system and FireFox. It feels like a brand new computer again. A time sink, though.

I was very suspicious of Hazan
when he first posted
specifically because he mentioned my name.
I was suspicious that the Muslims I have pissed off in the past were sending a beard to flatter me and gain my contact info, I have moved since the 2003 incident.
So I watched him, and didn't speak to him directly until recently.

Since he did not attempt to get my e-mail address I threw out that he had posted my name early on to "sucker me in"

Then I was suspicious about the level of his intelligence, I did not buy that he was 17, until I thought that through,
and realized... I was also like that at 17,
(and I had been homeless and not attending school since 14) so I conceded that it was indeed possible for him, no matter what his circumstantial limitations, to become / be that intelligent at 17, especially given the internet.

So I threw that one out.

Then I was suspicious about how he was posting from Pakistan without being detected but he made a post one day in response to someone who mentioned that regarding buying some sort of internet cards that hide or obscure your posting location.

I looked up his location yesterday and he lives in terrorist hell, priests beheaded, christian women getting acid thrown in their faces, etc. ROP my ass.... He lived in terrorist central.

So if he thought he had been made maybe he felt it was better to off himself than face the Jihadis (or his own parents)
I think the note was real.
Whether he is dead or alive we have no way of knowing.

The reason I ask about your Stat instruction is that I thought in my undergraduate degree, that 12 hours of Stat might be the most useless courses I had taken.

But the more I learned and the higher I got into the upper level classes and learned about how applicable it really can be to the real world problems, the more I came to appreciate it.

I would now say statistics one of the best minors anybody could pick that was going to be in any technical or medical field.

Regarding the stats, I think stats, research methods, and econ should all be required high school courses. As you say, the stats are applicable in many situations. There's also the need for informed citizens to be able to judge the pontifications put forth before them by others (e.g., man-made causes for global warming).

I believe that not requiring students to learn such things is also part of the broader strategy to screw us over...

Ciaospirit- my understanding, of women making it to paradise, was that a woman can get it, if her husband requests it.

The Taj Mahal, in India, was built as an elaborate tomb for the favorite wife of an Indian shah, and the Koranic inscriptions within, and the design of the gardens, were meant to invoke the idea of the Islamic Paradise.

Of course, any woman is completely dependent on making her husband happy, as he has the power of heaven and hell over her, per Islam.

Our World: The second-worst option

Caroline Glick, T
HE JERUSALEM POST
Nov. 13, 2006

A week before the US Congressional elections The New York Times published a front-page story which all but admitted that Iraq's nuclear program had been active until March 2003, when the US-led coalition deposed Saddam Hussein. The Times report relayed concerns of officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency regarding captured Iraqi documents which the administration had posted on the Internet.

The documents in question contained Iraqi nuclear bomb designs that could be useful to rogue states like Iran which are currently working to build a nuclear arsenal. The Times article also reported that, in the past, the same Web site had published Iraqi documents relating to nerve agents tabun and sarin. They were removed after their content elicited similar concerns from UN arms control officials.

In response to the Times story an international security Web site run by Ray Robinson published a translation of a story that ran on the Kuwaiti newspaper Al Seyassah's Web site on September 25. Citing European intelligence sources, the Al-Seyyassah report claims that in late 2004 Syria began developing a nuclear program near its border with Turkey. According to the report, Syria's program, which is being run by President Bashar Assad's brother Maher and defended by a Revolutionary Guards brigade, "has reached the stage of medium activity."

The Kuwaiti report maintains that the Syrian nuclear program relies "on equipment and materials that the sons of the deposed Iraqi leader, Uday and Qusai… transfer[red] to Syria by using dozens of civilian trucks and trains, before and after the US-British invasion in March 2003." The report also asserts that the Syrian nuclear program is supported by the Iranians who are running the program, together with Iraqi nuclear scientists and Muslim nuclear specialists from Muslim republics of the former Soviet Union.

The program "was originally built on the remains of the Iraqi program after it was wholly transferred to Syria."

"The Syrians play this game where they have been waiting for the Americans to get weaker in Iraq," said Jumblatt. "Now with the Democrat's win paving the way for an American withdrawal and with Rumsfeld's resignation making a statement, the Syrians believe they have the upper hand in the region to retake Lebanon."

Walid Jumblatt

Walid is also famous for saying that no one in his family had died peacefully in their beds in many generations.

So the man must be very worried.

Math, science, economics, history, etc. in school is one thing, but I've been thinking about the need for a class for teenagers/budding adults that is more life survival.

It would cover basics of those fields so that the news media couldn't lie to them. A quick and dirty primer as innoculation against propaganda.

I think it would be an interesting exercise for the instructor to write fake news stories summarizing the events in some TV show all the students watched, but spinning it to make the good evil and the evil good, while never technically lying. Teaching children how to read or watch a news article and glean the facts from the suppositions and baseless implications would be helpful indeed.

The problem would be where to teach this class. It doesn't fall under the school system and doesn't quite fit Sunday School either. The community center?

Length of time posting and # of posts can be very deceptive, as evidenced by the behavior of many now banned posters on and off this board.
All it means is you get more words to analyze and create some sort of picture of the person behind the keyboard, but that can be deceptive as well, depending on the writing skills of the poster.

The internet is just like real life, only without the smells. People are people. I don't think the ratio of deception re: real life vs blog life is appreciably different.

My understanding is that as soon as Clinton became POTUS, all nukes were removed from surface ships, and the Bush administration hasn't, probably for political reasons, re-armed them.

Using a conventional air launch anti-sub torpedo (the Mk-46, IIRC), one has to know exactly where a hostile boat is to sink it.

The Chinese have been gearing up for a possible war with the US, and have been working on systems to take out the carriers.

This may be of interest to you:

PART 1: Striking the US where it hurts

A noted Chinese theorist on modern warfare, Chang Mengxiong, compared China's form of fighting to "a Chinese boxer with a keen
knowledge of vital body points who can bring an opponent to his knees with a minimum of movements". It is like key acupuncture points in ancient Chinese medicine. Puncture one vital point and the whole anatomy is affected. If America ever goes to war with China, say, over Taiwan, then America should be prepared for the following "acupuncture points" in its anatomy to be "punctured". Each of the vital points can bring America to its knees with a minimum of effort.

-snip-

PART 2: The assassin's mace

As penned by one "Victor N Corpus a retired bridadier general of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP); former chief of the Intelligence Service, AFP; and holds a master's degree in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University."

"As long as the Palestinians live under occupation, exposed to daily frustration and humiliation,

Sounds like a broken record; like a mantra which only inflames the masses and keeps the lies alive. The Palestinians love hearing this because it gives them wind in their sails. It lends even more legitimicacy to a people who vow to continue to kill every Israeli man woman and child. Make no mistake when they finish they will come and bite the very hands of those which helped them!

We could however expect that kind of bull from the UN but it mimics what we hear from Bush and Rice.

Iran and Syria urged to help Iraq

Urged to help Iraq? What a joke. Ask the military where the majority of insurgents came from. Is the whole entire world on kool-aid or what? Bad enough we are in the midst of rewarding Palestinians for the slaughter of Jews. Now we are about to reward Syria and Iran as well!(our vowed enemies)

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is also expected to call for Syria and Iran to co-operate in a speech later on Monday.

Syria will help alright. This helping is a chance to keep the wolves at bay once and for all. LOL! Thus far, Syria has gotten away with everything from housing armaments taken from Iraq to being part and parcel of state sponsored terror to fueling the Iraqi insurgency to assassination to arming Hezollah via Iran. All with the help from our new good friends the Russians who like Syria and Iran seem to have the upper hand these days.

What a pathetic dance we are involved in. And everyone is worried how the democrats will mess things up! We have ourselves in a fine pickle. We the strongest greatest nation on earth find ourselves smack dab in a nice tight corner.

Iran and Syria partners. I could just spit. (that is after a good cry)

The chief causes of the rift are not religion or history, they say, but recent political developments, notably the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

I heard a Lebanese Muslim speaker on Saturday say that the conflict being caused by political developments is one of the biggest lies out there and perpetuated by the media. He said it is absolutely a religious rift and has been for 1400 years. But you won't hear Kofi quoting that PhD expert on Islam and the ME.

elric - you don't do the cause any favors by not voting against the dems.
also, there are leaders out there that would shove the flag of freedom right up the islamonazis $#@ if given the chance. The problem is that alot of leftists don't see the threat.

They blind themselves because they are selfish. That is the ROOT of the leftist theology - selfishness. They hate conservatives because conservatives often think of others - and they can't BE a conservative because that might mean they'd have to sometimes think of someone other than themselves.

Now, if something should happen to make 1/2 the country less selfish - say Los Angles is leveled by a nuke, or the Superbowl is blown up - then you'd need a leader to take charge, kick the islamofacists butt, and not let up until they are all dead.

I submit to you Newt Gingrich, Zell Miller, Rush Limbaugh, All Coulter or Mr. Savage. None on which - at the moment - could probably get elected - but you let the bad guys kill a million Americans and it might knock enough leftists into reality to make it a possibility.

newt wouldn't take this crap. neither would I, were I someone poised to have control.
D#$m the world, if I were in charge we'd have this problem solved by now - and the world would hate us - and Russia and China would be ready to destroy us, and there would be wailing and gnashing of teeth, and the muslim world( what was left of it) would be doing the largest seethe-fest ever - but the evil facists would be dead. and anyone else wanting to follow in their footsteps would be faced with the decision - do you want to be a dead islamofacist, or a live anything else?

death to the enemy. all of them. no matter the cost.

Here is a prediction of what's in store, and you can take this to the bank. If you don't care to read New Testament, please feel free to scroll. I won't take any offense:

Matthew 24:3-20 (English Standard Version)

Signs of the Close of the Age

3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" 4And Jesus answered them, "See that no one leads you astray. 5For many will come in my name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. 6And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

8All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.

9"Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. 10And then many will fall away[a] and betray one another and hate one another. 11And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

The Abomination of Desolation

15"So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, 18and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 19And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 20Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath.

Good news for Mr Howard

PRIME Minister John Howard has closed the gap on Opposition Leader Kim Beazley, according to a leadership survey conducted by Newspoll.

Mr Howard has made inroads in Labor's traditional strengths of health and education, The Australian reports today.

The poll found 82 per cent of voters thought Kim Beazley was more caring than John Howard, who registered 67 per cent.

But Mr Howard was viewed as the most decisive leader with a better vision for Australia.

Our Federal election is not till this time next year but so far so good

Mr Howard just beats off all criticism

November Surprise

And Democratic Party officials in Union County, North Carolina got a surprise last week when they found out their winning candidate for a seat on the Soil and Water Conservation Board … had been dead for a month.

The party ran newspaper ads endorsing Sam Duncan the weekend before the election — and they worked — he won by 12,000 votes.

County election officials knew that Duncan had died — but no one told the party or the voters. Said the county elections director: "It's not our job to do that." And a former sheriff who voted for Duncan said he was shocked to hear "that poor Sam was gone."

No offense, but what goddamn good is it with this leadership? We have the best military that ever existed, and the worst leadership. Utter waste. Until this election I would have counseled young men to go into the military, now I would tell them to stay the hell out. Does anyone realize yet that the kids that died over there, or maybe worse, are maimed for life, did it for NOTHING! Gahhh, I am beyond mad and disgusted. Iraq is OVER.

It will be left to disintegrate, and disintegrate it will. Did you know today uniformed men cordoned off an area and kidnapped 150 men in Baghdad? They are organized and BOLD and in your face. Already showing their strength, and the ballot ink isn't even dry here yet. The jihadists might as well have voted in our election.

You know what was on the radio today? The sentences of the Marines that were being held in shackles in Camp Pendleton for supposedly murdering an Iraqi "civilian." Bush will let them rot. Kids thrust into battle and war, maybe they made a mistake, maybe tired of seeing their buddies blown to bits. But Bush will get to go home to Daddy and hang at the ranch for his mistakes. Our kids will rot in prisons.

I am so OVER, any belief that there is any force of good within our government that can overcome the evil. Shame on me for not putting all my faith in God. There is no protection, peace or safety now though our government, the country does not want to acknowledge God anymore?

Remove Him from city seals, and memorials, and schools, and courtrooms. Fine...then God can, and has, removed His blessing from this government. It is over, a new day. No structure will protect anyone, only your own individual faith will mean anything in the days to come.

Harsh reality is very uncomfortable. Many of us here still want to think it is not that bad, next election, another cycle. I do not think so. I think God is moving on the earth like we have never seen. Every fig leaf, and construct that we have used to hide ourself from His face is being removed...for believers, unbelievers, death cult fanatics, worshipers of government and tower of Babel builders...all of us, uncomfortable, thrust from the womb and our thumb-sucking. It was always about us and Him. All the pretense will be lifted now, and some will be driven mad by the reality, others will come home.

Events are moving faster now, something almost inevitable sweeping the earth. Next up to the batter box is Israel attacking Iran...

Israel won't have for long, Iran announced their "nuclear project" is almost complete, and the situation in Lebanon is bad and getting worse,

As for the United States, there is very little we can do to assist. Siniora is already battling charges that he is Washington’s stooge – charges that ring true with many ordinary Lebanese, thanks to effective Hezb’allah propaganda spewed forth from Al-Manar, the terrorist media organ in Lebanon. And as Dr. Phares points out, Nasrallah’s push for power has not taken place in a political vacuum; both he and his patrons in Tehran and Syria know how to read US election results...
Lebanon is entering a period of enormous tension and trial, the results being difficult to predict at this point. What seems clear is that the forces for freedom and independence are facing their greatest challenge and that the next few days and weeks will determine their fate and the fate of their tiny country for many years to come.

But it might not be Israel who takes the first shot. John Keegan & others are predicting another war with Hezbollah by spring or summer of next year, this time directly involving Syria. Iran has restocked the missiles they lost & used in last summer's war and then some. Lebanon has become a suicide state with Hezbollah the bomb-vest.

Wars start when the aggressor thinks their opponents are weak. The Democrat win signals weakness in the US, while Olmert is politicaly weak in Israel. The military in both countries is capable of dealing with the impending crisis, but is the political leadership?

#375 Jehu,

I believe all of these things must come to pass for what it is worth. I have told people often and sometimes been laughed at that what you saw on 9/11 was a pinprick of things to come.

And if I didn't feel like I owed it to the older generations that fought the good fight and the younger generations like my children, I might stand back and watch.

But, I don't believe that is what the Lord wants us to do. Win or lose, I'm going to continue to fight the good, finish, and keep the faith.

Though you might be frustrated, I know that is what you are going to do too - as will most of the folks on this board.

But I would like to say this about our military. Our military is not set up to play traffic cop and kindergarten teacher - which is what we are asking them to do.

I have little doubt, left to the own accord and provided with the necessary support both here and abroad, are guys and gals could steamroll anyone necessary - if we would only let them. But if our military lets down at this time, and the rest of us let the enemy both here and abroad get away with the lies, then we are doomed.

Senate Democrats to choose party leaders

Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada was unchallenged to become the schedule-setting majority leader, succeeding possible presidential candidate Bill Frist, R-Tenn., whose self-imposed two-term limit expires this year.

The vote-counting Democratic whip is expected to be Sen. Richard Durbin (news, bio, voting record) of Illinois. Democratic leaders have asked Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) of New York to continue as the chairman of the party's senatorial campaign committee after overseeing last week's elections.

Why Google doesn't
observe Veterans Day
Top search engine explains holiday
ignored for 8 years out of 'reverence'

In response to e-mail generated by a WND story noting Google didn't mark Veterans Day for an eighth straight year, the search engine giant created a form letter explaining the non-commemoration of the holiday was deliberate and out of reverence.

"Thank you for your note," read the form response. "We understand your concern and interest in seeing a Veteran's (sic) Day Google logo. If we were to commemorate this holiday, we'd want to express reverence; however, as Google's special logos tend to be lighthearted in nature, this would be a particularly challenging design. We wouldn't want to create a graphic that could be interpreted as disrespectful in any way."

Texas town starts taking on illegal immigration

Council members in Farmers Branch unanimously approved tough new anti-immigration measures Monday evening, including one that makes English the official language.

In a series of 6-0 votes, the council members also approved fines for landlords and businesses that deal with illegal immigrants, and allowed local authorities to screen suspects in police custody to see if they are in the country illegally.

The votes were made in a room in City Hall packed with people who clapped as the votes were tallied in favor of the measures. In a parking lot outside, hundreds of protesters against the rules hoisted American flags and sang the Pledge of Allegiance in English before the votes were taken.

Greetings from sunny Buenos Aires, where there has been an interesting rupture in the usual left-islamist alliance. The Argentinian attorney general asked for, and a federal court issued, arrest warrants for Iranian officials (including our old pal Rafsanjani) over the 1994 bombing of a Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires. Luis D'Elia, a thug who had been given a government post in the left-wing Kirchner administration, promptly popped over to the Iranian embassy, and issued a joint statement with Iranian officials about how this was all just a trick of the evil Americans and Israelis. This was too much for even Kirchner, who promptly fired D'Elia. Story is here for those who can read Spanish.

On a barely related note -- my daughter told me last night they're doing a study unit in school on Christianity, Judaism and Islam. This will culminate in a field trip to a church, synagogue and mosque.

She's in 6th grade, public school -- I don't like the thought of her setting foot in a mosque.

The good news is, she knows better than to believe any pablum offered up about the "Religion of Peace" -- I've been talking to my kids for the past few years about it.

So, we've been doing some home study to complement the school information. Our textbook is "The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam" and various websites. Most gleaned from the wise posters here at LGF.

Oh, and I've e-mailed the teacher requesting to see the material they're giving the kids to work on. At least she knows I'm watching.

By the way... not sure if it has been discussed.

What the CRUST is going on with the Church of England?

They're distancing themselves from the word "Euthanasia" with what seems to be a John Kerry-ish nuance... calling it "treatment withdrawal" . . . . .

They say that sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease, which I can understand.

however, here are some of the things they want parents to consider:

However, the church said the cost of care, potential parental burden and the price of the future education of the child should be considered in evaluating refusal-of-treatment to severely disabled newborns.

cost of care? parental burden? price of education?

my cousin has Down Syndrome. You can go first to ask my aunt and uncle if they'd rather have just done 'treatment withdrawl' . . . I don't want to get beaten to a pulp by my italian uncle.

I never thought i'd have to as the CHURCH this question:

How much is a human life worth? God seemed to put a high price on it: His son.

Look also to having beat cops on the street, the free needle/crack kit delivered to your door by city employees trounced, summer-squatting low-life agressive punk panhandlers swept from the streets for good, return to core services, a high-tech low output trash incinerator, trimming a lot of fat from the City's HR budget and an all around major clean-up of the city to rid itself from the trash, graffiti, low-lifes and filth that has accumulated to such a degree to render the Capital of Canada a toilet.

Austin Bay has an interesting take on the Iraqi Study Group:

Iraq Study Group — a political facade
The Baker-Hamilton study group will not produce any new thinking. The U.S. military has analyzed and gamed every course of action, including cut and run. For that matter, it gamed “non-intervention” in Iraq as well.

What Baker and Hamilton provide is political cover for Democrats. Our plan has been a sound one — build Iraqi security and political institutions to the point US and coalition forces move to “strategic overwatch.” John Murtha suggested we move our troops to Okinawa– that’s a little bit far, but hey, he’s going to be the new House majority leader so we will be entertained with similar Murtha “quips” for the next two years. Be prepared. 2009 is the earliest date I see strategic overwatch beginning — and that assumes Pelosi and her clan don’t go with Murtha and Cindy Sheehan.

Which is where Baker-Hamilton comes in. Baker-Hamilton is an academic committee. I guarantee the John Kerry-level strategic geniuses who participated in the study have radcially differing views of the issues, different definitions of problems, and a spectrum of mutually-incoherent policy prescriptions. (Like I said, it’s an academic committee.) My bet is the Baker-Hamilton “consensus” will ultimately reflect Jim Baker’s and Lee Hamilton’s two-man consensus (in other words, truth in packaging unusual in government and academia).

If we are lucky, the Baker-Hamilton magic show will drop a scarf over the top hat and with a the ”poof” of a New York Times headline produce a “unifying” policy of words that will let the Democrats join the war, despite the howls of their blogosphere nutsroots.

Then the military will continue to do what it’s been doing in Iraq and Afghanistan and the new Iraqi government will continue to learn by doing — and in the ordeal of war that will mean learn by bleeding, suffering, and sweating.

UPDATE: The Washington Post is impressed. Okay, not by much. The article mentions the possibility that the study will help promote a political consensus – a warfighting political consensus.

Bay is well informed and sober writer on military issues. His prediction is that the ISG will allow the Democrats to get back into the big tent and start seriously to support an intelligent strategy for prosecuting the war in Iraq in particular & the GWOT in general.

I wonder: is Bush looking ahead to the possibility the next US president will be a Democrat? In 2002 he said this will be a long war, lasting a generation or more. And is Bush determined that the next President be informed and serious about defending America against the very real threat of Islamofascism? If so, this may be Bush's ultimate legacy and a very wise one it is. He is putting partisan politics aside for the benefit of the country.

The problem with the field trip is it has an underlying assumption that all three religions are equal, like going to visit a church, a synagogue and a mosque are all the same huggy-buggy thing.

Well good for him. That's what he should do -- have the courage to speak the truth.

And so do I: He doesn't belong in Western civilization. He belongs in a civilization which shares his views, like Saudi Arabia or Iran. For him to live in Australia, spout out that stuff, and then expect Australians not to react extremely negatively, is the ultimate in narcissism and obnoxiousness.

Lance Kates,

What the CRUST is going on with the Church of England?

They're distancing themselves from the word "Euthanasia" with what seems to be a John Kerry-ish nuance... calling it "treatment withdrawal" . . . . .

They say that sometimes the treatment is worse than the disease, which I can understand.

I never thought i'd have to as the CHURCH this question:

How much is a human life worth? God seemed to put a high price on it: His son.

You mean to tell me that the Chuch of England took a moment to discuss something other than gay bishops? Truly amazing.

my bet is that they will visit a 'hip' mosque... then a stuffy synagogue and a Catholic church.

then talk about how the religions intertwine through time.... christians killing muslims and jews in the Crusades, and how the Jews fight the muslims even today to protect the land they took.

*evil grin*

ok, so it won't be THAT bad... but I somehow doubt that they'll give each a fair shake. Isn't popular you know.

also, I expect a couple parents to be reserved about going to the mosque, but the complaints will come from their children being forced to go to one of those.... CHRISTIAN... churches! (Seperation of church and state you know...)

I only tangentially covered stuff relating to Ratner and his involvment in the far left/socialist groups.

His family runs one of the bigger real estate developer concerns in the country, and one division (Forest City Ratner) is involved in the NYT headquarters construction and the current Atlantic Yards project. One of them owns the New Jersey Nets.

I think Mark Levin and others had much more on the whole Ratner involvment in the German case and their socialist/communist agenda.

Iran plotting to groom bin Laden's successor

Iran is trying to form an unholy alliance with al-Qa'eda by grooming a new generation of leaders to take over from Osama bin Laden, The Daily Telegraph can reveal.

Western intelligence officials say the Iranians are determined to take advantage of bin Laden's declining health to promote senior officials who are known to be friendly to Teheran.

The revelation will deal a major blow to Tony Blair's hopes of establishing a "new partnership" with Teheran.

I am curious to know if this is the same area that is known as Waziristan. If you remember, Musharaf, rather recently, signed on to a peace deal with the thugs living there. If it is the same area, I believe you can safely say that the Talebinization of this province is the fruit of that "peace agreement".

Bill Roggio has been following the peace/surrender deals the Pak gov't has signed with the Taliban/Al Qaeda in the North West frontier districts. This is not a good thing, but has been largely ignored by the media. Pakistan cannot truly be considered an ally, & the Musharref regime that sort-of rules Pakistan is a luke warm ally at best. He is surrounded by Islamists in the Intelligence Services and to a lesser extent, in the Army. If Musharref falls, the nuclear nightmare could very well break open.

Security watchtower has a report up today on the Pakistan Problem

"We need to strengthen our will. What dismays me most about last week's election is the sense that too many in our country simply want to close their eyes and pretend these problems don't exist. They want to pretend we're dealing with rational actors who can be dealt with over tea and crumpets at the diplomatic table.

Pakistan's support for terrorism is real. Iran's support for terrorism is real. The sectarian violence in Iraq is real.

This is the hand we've been dealt. How we play it will affect the futures of our children. Are we up to it?"

On the subject of the British leaving Britain, there was a similar story this past week about Germans leaving Germany.

Germans are leaving their country in record numbers but unlike previous waves of migrants who fled 19th century poverty or 1930s Nazi terror, these modern day refugees are trying to escape a new scourge -- unemployment.

Flocking to places as far away as the United States, Canada and Australia as well as Norway, the Netherlands and Austria more than 150,000 Germans packed their bags and left in 2004 -- the greatest exodus in any single year since the late 1940s.

High unemployment that lingers at levels of more than 20 percent in some parts of Germany and dim prospects for any improvement are the key factors behind the migration. In the 15 years since German unification more than 1.8 million Germans have left.

The changes could make the exam more difficult for some people, said America Calderon, the program manager at the Central Resource Center, a Washington, D.C., organization that offers citizenship and other programs to Latino immigrants. She guessed it also could push more people into formal classes, instead of trying to learn the information on their own.

"It's more difficult because the typical immigrant is trying to struggle with English and trying to learn the 100 questions right now," Calderon said.

well, if they're unable to speak english, passing a test is the least of their worries.

Hey Widow.

As one of the DDT master gardeners/landscapers I've got a question for you.

I have a very ugly chicken wire fence (about 6' high) around my garden to discourage deer and other critters. I was thinking about a shorter (maybe 4') picket fence that would look much better for next year. If the deer didn't bother with vaulting the 6' fence, do you think they will do the same with a shorter one?

(Kind of like a backwards deer limbo thing in a weird sort of way...how low can I go?)

Well it's goodnight time

G'day {Widow'smight}

Couldn't get onto the Ask the Imam site but this is the next best thing

This is woman's etiquette Islam style for blogging
:-)

The conversation should not be allowed to wander too far from the topic being discussed; or it should be for the purposes of calling others to Islam.

They should not let their voices be soft, or use soft and gentle expressions.

They should not ask about personal matters that have no bearing on the matter being discussed, such as how old a person is, how tall he or she is, or where he or she lives… etc.

Other brothers (in the case of men) or sisters (in the case of women) should take part in the conversation or read the correspondence, so that the Shaytaan will find no way to enter the hearts of the people who are conversing or corresponding.
The conversation or correspondence must be halted immediately if the heart starts to stir with feelings of desire.

As my heart is stirring with desire(for chocolate and Timtams) I'll go to bed!

619 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 7:27:05am

612 NMM,

A Whitetail can easily leap over a 4 foot fence if they want. You also have to worry about them placing their front hooves over.

Even though I live in the country, I've never had deer problems. I would think the 4 foot fence would be fine though, you can always use some type of repellant if it doesn't seem to be working. A compound bow would do the trick, just make sure they run off your property before they keel over (keeping you out of the NMW dog/out house).

Remember to tell your kids that "Grass don't grow on a busy street" when they tease about your hair. You can use the Headborat reasoning with your bowling buds.

You'll be stayin' right here in my arms.

one of the reasons why I am redoing my financial fitness is so that I can donate more when my debts are gone.

as it is about my only financial giving of any real big amount is to the salvation army, where I exchange all the change i've collected in a year and give it to one of the bellringers at walmart.

I do other stuff here and there, but not as much as I'd like.

643 redstateredneck  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 8:40:19am

I take a turn ringing the Salvation Army bell every year, and I can tell you, it is the people who look like they have the least to give, who will dig down and put money in that kettle. A lot of the "well heeled" try to get by you without ever making eye contact. I call out "Merry Christmas!" to 'em and try to shame them into giving!

Around here, the upcoming weekend is "Scouting for Food" weekend. Did that a couple of years when NMB was in cub scouts. Was actually pretty fun as well as a good cause.

Also, we are about half-way through the rifle season for deer hunting and there is a pretty strong "share the harvest" effort.

You guys got that stuff where you are too?

Scarlett,

I take a turn ringing the Salvation Army bell every year, and I can tell you, it is the people who look like they have the least to give, who will dig down and put money in that kettle. A lot of the "well heeled" try to get by you without ever making eye contact. I call out "Merry Christmas!" to 'em and try to shame them into giving!

I think if you gave the guys a cute wink, that would stop them in their tracks! I was reading about the % of giving compared to income, and Mississippi was near the top, along with other states in the south. Somehow, people forget others in need when they are fortunate to get some money.
Lower Income givers give from their own needs, wealthier people, out of their excess.

There seems to be some story Jesus told about this....

Ok, give us locations/dates incase we want to pony up some cash and maybe get a HUG.

648 newmelleman  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 8:49:50am

#646 Lance

Scouting for food involves two weekends. On the first the scout leaves bags on doorknobs (for placing canned/dry good donations into) and then they pick them up the next weekend. If you didn't get a plastic bag last weekend, then they aren't doing it in your area (at least this weekend).

I think the girl scouts do a similar thing in April..."April Showers"? They leave a bag for toiletry donations I think.

649 redstateredneck  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 8:50:00am

I belong to a church that is part of an interdenominational food pantry, so I'm always buying extra canned goods & staples for them. Also, my church prepares desserts for another organization that feeds the needy on Mondays and Fridays. I think we also have some kind of sharing program that the hunters participate in. I think no matter where you live, there are opportunities for service and giving. Lance, you said that you don't have much to give right now because of your financial situation, but you can GIVE YOUR TIME. The Salvation Army is always looking for bellringers. Call you local chapter and tell them you want to sign up. You would not believe how much fun it is!

M,

That picture is bout as good as it gets. I think I owe you a couple more songs for that. I like to put one of my 4 girls (or my doggie) in the picture to balance me out.

I just got a call from the Lady I helped out last month. She paid me back a week later, but her husband (who was at home in a vegatative state for 3 years) just died. She asked me to help her out with the funeral expenses, by Friday. Again, I told her I didn't have the 4 grand laying around, but would figure something out. I called her back and asked if they take Credit Cards (mine has a zero balance). Waiting to hear back.

Hoping for a yes .........

659 redstateredneck  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:19:55am

If anyone has any time off from work and wants to come south to help Katrina victims, there are still people who are suffering (for real, not the malingerers) from the aftermath of the hurricane. We are 100 miles from the coast, but we still have 500 houses in a two county area that had roof damage, etc. Most of these people are poor and/or elderly and did not have adequate insurance for the repairs. FEMA, for instance, does not pay for removing fallen trees. You can come and volunteer for a couple of days, a week, whatever. Our church is involved in this and the guy who takes the volunteers out and shows them what to do is a member. The number of volunteers is dwindling down and there is still a lot to do.

Funny you should mention that...there is an (extremely) outside chance I may be doing that before the year is out.

BTW Edofmanynames has been calling for tornadoes in your area...what's the forecast by you? Stay safe.

We are under a tornado watch until 7:00 tonight. It sprinkled on me when I went to Wal Mart awhile ago. Nothing bad yet.

Lance,

big wind coming to oklahoma tonight... which means that redstate's area is going to get blasted tomorrow.

Sounds like some famous Injun Chief. Big Wind coming, make wumpin with little Beaver. Then travel to land of many consanants where lives Red Flower.

Lets smoke Peace Pipe now.

667 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:37:55am

devil post, Widow

heh. of course that is a tobacco Peace Pipe....

of course..

668 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:42:41am

Scarlett,

FEMA, for instance, does not pay for removing fallen trees. You can come and volunteer for a couple of days, a week, whatever. Our church is involved in this and the guy who takes the volunteers out and shows them what to do is a member. The number of volunteers is dwindling down and there is still a lot to do.

You get to play with Chainsaws and stuff? Cool. Are you going to show up in your Devilette costume and your whip to inspire err punish those not working hard enough?

Just wonderin

If that's what it takes!

670 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:46:38am

Lance,

A fine Sea-gar would work for this warrior.

Although, after I smoke one of those big honkers, my effectiveness rating kinda bottoms out.

671 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:51:14am

I stick to my pipe and cherry flavored pipe tobacco.

which I've used up.

now i have whiskey flavored tobacco.

never heard of such a thing, but I'm not complaining.

672 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 9:53:42am

Scarlett,

I would enjoy being able to help someone out for a week. I've always found kindness knows no political party or skin color. Never been in MS or LA, but I heard the Gulf fishing is great.

My job is ending at the end of this year, and I might have one lined up after that. I'll keep that in the back of my mind, I was going to spend any offtime Flintlock hunting and working on the house or church, but that could always wait.

673 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:00:02am

speaking of hunting, I found this site for you Widow.

nonresident stuff is most of the way down.

674 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:00:21am

Lance,

I smoke a few cigars per year. I usually like to have a few beers first, and nothing that involves thinking to do for the rest of the night. I good cigar works well in those situations.

675 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:11:55am

Lance,

Your Non-resident (As opposed to Alien) is pricey - $ 200 compared to PA - $ 100. PA used to have a Whitetail herd close to a million.

But, if I'm traveling to OK, What the heck!

Our Rifle season always starts the Monday after Thanksgiving, so you won't be hearing from me 11/27 or 28.

676 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:14:59am

675 Widow

heh. as long as you're back around the 29th or so, we'll be good.

677 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:18:30am

Lance,

Ya youns are probably totally lost without me, just like it was before I arrived here.

You'll have to pick up the charm mantel for me when I'm gone Lance. I have complete faith in your ability, plus it'll be good practice on those OK Racks that are always in season.

678 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:20:34am

How about a movie, Ball Game, Toby Keith concert etc. Just don't try to read her mind at an early stage, you need some cause and effects and patterns before you can Guess what she's thinking.

Tell her about how God Crafted women and Built men. She's like a fine vessel.

682 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:37:23am

681 Widow

heh.. i act very well on a date.

last date was dinner, then the water taxi tour of bricktown via the canal, then a movie, then chatting by a lit fountain.

683 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:47:38am

Lance,

Sounds like you got this thing down pretty good, but it might but a dent into the retirement fund. But, if you find a nice gal, you won't worry about retiring anyway.

all humor aside, I really hope that whichever lady i find isn't one that uses manipulation, as that is a quick way to get me to disconnect from a person. instantly.

I also hope she's not expecting a grand and lavish lifestyle.

that's not my style.

685 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:53:47am

manipulation (via ignoring or witholding, etc) is, in my opinion, just a backhanded way of throwing a temper tantrum.

it is also, in my opinion, the height of a Narcissistic egocentric attitude.

(not to put too fine of a point on it)

unfortunately, our current culture teaches women to act that way as a default.

686 newmelleman  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 10:53:49am

Allow me a pet peeve, unrelated to the present discussion.

I have a performance review coming up (first I've had in several years BTW). My boss wants the names of about 50 people I interact with here at work so that they can provide comments. Basically, they will be doing my review. IMHO, my boss should be doing the review not those that I work with/fight with on occasion/compete against for resources/etc.

Not Fair!

/thank you.

Sounds like your boss is trying to shirk his responsibilities. Or he/she is just a manipulative asshole who wants to create a tattle-tale type environment.

688 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 11:08:51am

686 NMM

my mother has to do SELF-reviews. then the bosses look at her self-review and decide how accurate it is.

in my opinion, it is useless for anyone except the boss to do your review, and if they can't get a handle of how good of a job you do, then they are not doing their job well.

689 Widow'smight  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 11:10:14am

Lance,

all humor aside, I really hope that whichever lady i find isn't one that uses manipulation, as that is a quick way to get me to disconnect from a person. instantly.

If you take your time and get to know her, you'll find these things out. If you don't get along with a woman when you're just dating, it ain't going to get rosey by having more responsibility to each other. You'll know if it's the right gal. As Trace Adkins says "this ain't no thinking thing". Love is an emotional thing, not always a logical thing.

NMM,

Can't they just ask us?

Speaking of Southern Belles, did you know this?

Immediately following the American Civil War, some Confederate southerners were unwilling to live under the rule of the triumphant Union. Reconstruction had gone badly for many of these former Confederates as their pre-war lifestyle was gone and replaced with economic impoverishment. Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil seized upon this opportunity by offering an alternative. He sent recruiters into Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina and Texas in search of experienced cotton farmers for his country. Many southerners saw this as their only option for happiness; to build a community with southern values in the jungle of Brazil. They would become known as the Confederados.

The Confederados
You Southerners are certainly strong-willed.

exception to my previous post:

companies with a large number of employees that are primarily self-sufficient...

but, generally, if there is 1 person with so many under them that they can't know them all, they may need to get a few supervisors under the boss.

depends on the business.

Thanks for letting me vent.

I think the "peer review" fosters one of two things.

1) A tattle-tale environment as has been noted.

2) A popularity contest. Regardless of how well I do my job I would get rated on how well I get along (suck up).

Oh well, it is what it is I guess.

in every failed economy, gold is the first thing to go on the 'worthless list' since the Roman Empire.

Goods and services become highly valued.

current reference, New Orleans in the days after katrina.... gold would get you nothing, but a bottle of water and a gallon of gas became very valued.

Don't listen to the radio commercials, gold is never a good investment for a failing economy. (and, in my own humble opinion, with Dem Rule, our economy is going to go down unless President Bush starts using the Veto stamp)

It is interesting to note that of the 722 posts on this thread, very few refer to the original story.

Instead of comments on the sheik's words, there are hundreds of posts on unrelated matters such as the US elections, Iraq, and personal affairs of the posters. In fact, not one post of the last 200 or so addresses the actual subject.

Sometimes it seems as if Americans are completely uninterested in anything that happens outside the US - the fact that posters cannot keep to the subject of this thread proves my point. I have noticed this happens repeatedly.

Perhaps this is why so much of the worlds population is increasingly critical of Americans.

724 LanceKates  Tue, Nov 14, 2006 7:47:55pm

723 Diana

if you look at the timestamp on the comments, you'll notice that most came a day after this article was posted... the last thread for a day is a general gathering place for posters who are awake before a new thread is posted... so the last half or so of most threads is totally off topic, because in the few hundred posts prior, we all said that the terrorists are evil, the MSM is biased against the United States and conservatives, and that we like the second amendment.

Now, if you are so unhappy about these 'off topic posts' . . . why did you waste time, energy, electricity and bandwidth to tell no one (since i'm the only one still on this thread) how dissatisfied you are, and have a generic slam against the United States?

Your post was no more 'on topic' than the posts that you seem to scorn.

Here's a deal. we don't go out of our way to find you and complain about everything you do, don't come here to complain about us.

deal?

725 newmelleman  Wed, Nov 15, 2006 4:38:11am

Cluebat for #723 please.

726 DianaC  Wed, Nov 15, 2006 8:06:00pm

#724, 725 - kind of overreacting arent you?

My observation was simply an observation, not 'a generic slam against the United States.' or even a serious 'complaint'.

In fact, I happen to be quite pro-American but that doesnt mean that everything American should be immune from criticism.

In reply to your question re 'wasting my time and bandwidth posting comments'.

a. I rarely bother to post comments; and b. I could ask the same of you.

I felt like commenting on something I have also noticed on other US blogs, you both chose to perceive my somewhat mild criticism as some kind of anti-American diatribe.
