At least the Iraqis were quick about it, you can't leave these guys sitting in jail for decades or else they start to attract vermin, like Ed Asner or Mike Farrell..

I hope it was a public hanging, or else it was videotaped to show that he was hung legally and that no mass of people were allowed to descrate his body.

18 Cornholio  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:29:47pm

Saddam got PWNED!

19 lawhawk  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:30:15pm

It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Interesting that CBS News broke into their regular programming while NBC and ABC have not.

Holbrooke was on with Katie and was concerned about a potential uptick in violence as a result of his execution. Randall Pinkston also referenced a potential for more violence.

As if the jihadis and insurgents need another excuse?

20 bweep  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:30:25pm

A hanging...What?.....nobody told me!

Fair, swift justice for a monster who tortured thousnds, and brutally murdered over a million people.

The man ordered living human beings, dipped in large acid vats.

At least some people can now say that justice was served.

28 Former Lurker  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:31:05pm

Yippie! Saddam will finally take the long dirt nap.

P.S. I had trouble getting on LGF just now. I hope it is just lots of fellow lizards celebrating Saddam's demise and not a DOS attack.

(Open Thread) Saddam hanging
Komments...

Well (1+ / 0-)
I think that the death penalty is justified when it comes to people like Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden.
by jiacinto
------
George W. Bush? (10+ / 0-)

After all, he is responsible for more deaths than either of those you mentioned.

I am quite serious. Bush is as much of a criminal as either Hussien or Bin Laden.

Heh.
Is LGF running slow?

38 lawhawk  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:36:36pm

LGF just went screwy - probably with everyone trying to chime in and be the first on this thread. Hopefully Charles will go lo-res to help matters.

NBC still hasn't broken in with the news, just a local report noting he's been executed and the full story at 11pm.

39 The Pulchritudinous Patriot  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:36:39pm

Well, it is done.

I can't help but wonder what his last thoughts were.

I know that I would be afraid...I just wonder if God was calling him to account for his sins.

Justice was done here on Earth and justice will be done along the higher plane.

I suppose that I am humanizing him too much, which is normal seeing as I'm an actual human. He was a monster and I don't know how they think...it's inconcievable to me that anyone can think and act the way he did. Yet, I still wonder if he felt any sorrow at all for his actions.

As a Christian, I pray for the redemption of sinners. People think that I am a wimp because I pray for sinners and people who consider me an enemy, but I am told, as a Christian, that I am supposed to pray for "those who trespass against us". That would be the difference between us and the Islamofacists. We pray for those who don't believe and the Islamfacists behead those who don't.

Saddam is now living impaired. Not a moment too soon. A small measure of justice has been accomplished now.

They plan to bury him in an unmarked grave. I suggest they give a public viewing of Saddam so the public can get a piece of Saddam. Takes care of his grave becoming a rallying point.

66 eon  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:39:32pm

CBS reports that it was done just before 10 PM EST (7 PM PST) this evening, in front of witnesses.

We should all remember at this point that it was the Iraqi people who suffered most at the hands of this ....bastard..... and his cronies. And that it was the Iraqi people, under their new constitution, which they voted into being, that tried and convicted him, and levied the ultimate penalty of a purely temporal authority upon him. There will be those in the coming days who will call this a "show trial", and claim it was the United States which executed him. And they will be either ignorantly wrong, or deliberately lying. (Neither one will come as a surprise to me, frankly.)

Saddam Hussein has finally found out what real justice is. The hard way.

Other "maximum leaders" in that region should carefully consider his fate. They may find that their own peoples may be no more charitably disposed toward them in the future. And now those peoples have seen that change is possible.

There could be some very hard times ahead for the likes of Assad, Ahmadinejad, and their ilk.

We can hope, anyway.

cheers

eon

88 lawhawk  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 5:42:01pm

The execution was filmed, which one would expect to verify such things. I imagine that they'll also to an autopsy to confirm he's dead - laying him out on a slab like they did to his sons.

I heard that they're going to find a secret burial place for him and that they're not going to hand his remains over to his daughter for burial outside Iraq.

It is doubly interesting that CBS did NOT break into programming to announce that Gerald Ford had died (ABC & NBC did). CBS just ran a ticker across the bottom of the screen.

I think of every person who received a call telling them that their loved one was killed fighting for Freedom against Saddam.

I think of every innocent person trying to re-build Iraq who has been blown apart, decapitated or otherwise murdered by Saddam's Bathist and his insurgents.

I think of the Kurds Saddam gassed, and the thousands upon thousands of people he ordered tortured and killed.

Am I happy he's dead? Literally happy?

Not usually a friend of this particular news source...however, I did find this quote interesting.

In his Friday sermon, a mosque preacher in the Shiite holy city of Najaf called Saddam’s execution “God’s gift to Iraqis.”

Oh, God, you know what Saddam has done! He killed millions of Iraqis in prisons, in wars with neighboring countries and he is responsible for mass graves. Oh God, we ask you to take revenge on Saddam,” said Sheik Sadralddin al-Qubanji, a member of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, known as SCIRI.

Who are these people anyways?

CNN are such pricks.

They mentioned that footage of the execution will be made available by Al-Arabiya. CNN will be debating the issue internally and being "very sensitive" in the manner in which they show it, probably only showing the lead-up and the aftermath, but not the execution itself.

They were never that sensitive when they showed footage of American soldiers being shot.

Iraqi-Americans Cheer Reports of Saddam's Execution

Friday, 29 Dec 2006, 10:41 PM EST

Iraqi-Americans in Dearborn celebrate the reported execution of former Iraqi dictator
Saddam Hussein.

By KRISTIN LONGLEY
Associated Press Writer

DEARBORN, Mich. -- A crowd of Iraqi-Americans cheered and cried late Friday outside a mosque as some Arab media reported that Saddam Hussein was executed.

The crowd of more than 150 had gathered earlier in anticipation of Saddam's execution, praying for the death of the former Iraqi dictator as people honked car horns, sang and danced in celebration.

Chants of "Now there's peace, Saddam is dead" in English and Arabic rang into the night in this Detroit suburb.

Imam Husham Al-Husainy, the director of the center, said members of the center prayed for Saddam's death. Outside, traffic slowed as people drove in circles around the mosque, honking horns and flashing peace signs.

"This is our celebration of the death of Saddam," he said while standing on top of a car following reports that Saddam had been hanged. "The gift of our New Year is the murder of Saddam Hussein.

"If you want to share the Iraqi people's happiness for the death of Saddam, raise your voice and your hands."

The crowd responded with cheers.

The official witnesses to Saddam's impending execution gathered in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities.

Some Arab media, including Saudi-owned Al-Arabiya and the U.S.-financed Al-Hurrah, reported that Saddam had been executed. There was no confirmation from the Iraqi government.

A toast to Iraqi republican justice.

While not as emotionally satisfying as the end of Ceaucescu and his wife may have been for the people of Romania, it certainly is a tribute to the rapid emergence of constitutional government in Iraq.

It is good to have put an end to any possibility of his returning to shredding and dissolving other Iraqis and others. I can breathe more freely, now that I don't have to share the air with the likes of that monster.

And a salute to the American and coalition efforts that have enabled us and the people of Iraq to reach this day.

And the latest news report from Hell.

Saddam has joined his two sons at the newly installed D.R. Chipper-Shredder station in the 11th circle of Hell (Dante's original map, while accurate at the time did not, foresee the need for additional circles for Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler). At the chipper shredder facility, Saddam and the boys will take turns for the rest of eternity feeding each other through a red hot D.R. Chipper Shredder. A 15 minute interval between shreddings is provided to allow the three Hussein's to be physically reconstituted so as to fully appreciate the exquisite sensation of each cycle. The Devil, while sipping a strawberry Margarita, said that he had the facility built "to accommodate the new generation" of civilization destroying criminals that will eventually come his way, you know, people like Kofi Annan, and that little shit from Iran".

Back in the 18th century in London, hanging days were public holidays where tens of thousands attended to either cheer or jeer the felon who was to be executed at Tyburn (the place of execution where Marble Arch now stands). Some of the "felons" such as the famous highwayman Jack Sheppard would even recite poetry and give dying speeches to the crowd, reveling in their temporary fame. Somehow I doubt that Saddam was in a jovial mood.

233 Dar ul Harb  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 6:02:12pm

AP's story describes the deceased as the "shotgun-waving dictator who ruled Iraq with a remorseless brutality for a quarter-century" and describes the execution as "a grim end for the 69-year-old leader who had vexed three U.S. presidents."

Another grim milestone, eh?

234 TotallySirius  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 6:02:29pm

It won't be pleasant where he's going.

235 lawhawk  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 6:02:55pm

Just a sampling of what's out there from the other side of the aisle:

NYT - how much of the execution should be shown (I say all of it)

HuffPo's Martin Lewis shows that he's not the comic that his name might otherwise indicate.

Gun Totin Liberal just keeps noting the US bodycount.

My retort to such blatherings is simple: weigh the relative cost of under 3,000 soldiers to liberate 30 million people from a genocidal dictator who murdered hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, started wars with its neighbors, and caused incalculable environmental damage to the region (remember dumping all that oil into the Gulf and starting all those oil well fires?!).

He deserved to die and the costs to eliminate such a dictator and dangerous figure were worth it. They still are.

In fact, my late mother (God rest her soul) said in 1991 re Saddam, "All it takes to solve that problem is one bullet. If I was able, I'd go over there and deliver it myself."

Couric's problem isn't her gender.

It's being a self-deluded pseudo-philosopher who's been living in her own little dream world so long that when reality intrudes, she goes into brainlock- what Ayn Rand called "blank-out". (cf. Atlas Shrugged.) When confronted with facts that conflict with their theories, people of her philosophical bent invariably cannot deal with them.

This is why giving them power, influence, or even notoriety is a very bad idea. Rather like getting into a car driven by Daffy Duck.

No, I shouldn't say that. It's unfair.

Sorry about that, Daff'.

How judicious was CNN in airing al-Qaedist snuff films of the murder of American soldiers?

Well of course the KosKiddies are all in uproar. They are tools of Satan after all.

As to the lack of women at the celebrations in Dearbornistan...well it's another example of how fecking wrong Islam is.

People say that Christianity and Judiasm is mysoginistic, but it isn't true. Women are to be respected in both faiths! In fact, the New testament says that men are to respect their wives and mothers.

Not veil them from head to foot, keep them ignorant and housebound only to give birth every two years and risk dying from Puperal fever because they aren't allowed Doctors because men who aren't their husbands and touch them and the women aren't allowed to go to school and thus can't become Doctors so that they can treat the women.

It's so screwed up on so many levels.

Once upon a a time ago I once wrote about the Left:

Socialists are inherently parasitic and thus cannot take "no" for an answer to their demands for obedience and the material goods they need to exist. If they did so they would wither away and die.

A dictator, on the other hand, does not have to take "no" for answer. Thus socialists are by necessity inclined to favor dictatorships over citizen-ruled republics.

When they see a dictator in the dock, they see their own hopes and desires go with him.

311 Dirk Diggler  Fri, Dec 29, 2006 6:19:33pm

A little Sinatra is fitting for this occasion:

And now, the end is here
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll say it clear
I'll state my case, of which I'm certain
I've lived a life that's full
I traveled each and ev'ry highway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Regrets, I've had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do and saw it through without exemption
I planned each charted course, each careful step along the byway
And more, much more than this, I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way

I've loved, I've laughed and cried
I've had my fill, my share of losing
And now, as tears subside, I find it all so amusing
To think I did all that
And may I say, not in a shy way,
"Oh, no, oh, no, not me, I did it my way"

For what is a man, what has he got?
If not himself, then he has naught
To say the things he truly feels and not the words of one who kneels
The record shows I took the blows and did it my way!

Yes, it was my way

I find it interesting that the left (i.e. Kos Kidz) have such utilitarian comments like “Is this going to end terrorism?” There doesn’t seem to be any sense of justice. The whole concept seems to be foreign for them. Oh, they have something called “social justice” but that just means getting things you don’t deserve. Saddam’s death is what I’d call justice … he got what he deserved.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has been executed, a witness said.

"Saddam's body is in front me," said an official in the prime minister's office when CNN telephoned. "It's over."

In the background, Shiite chanting could be heard. When asked about the chanting, the official said "These are employees of the prime minister's office and government chanting in celebration."

The witness reported that celebrations broke out after Hussein was dead, and that there was "dancing around the body."

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did not attend the execution, according to an adviser to the prime minister who was interviewed on state television.

The execution was videotaped and photographed, state television reported, and those images will be distributed to the media.

I like to believe in a treble-damage system. For those who really must end in Hell (e.g., Saddam, Pol Pot) -- those who have done more harm than good in this world -- they should suffer three times the harm they dished out in this world. Thereafter, time served, that grain of goodness deep down in their souls is allowed on up....

By that measure, it'll be a long time before we see Adolf, Pol, Josef, Saddam, Yassar, etc.

Of course, that doesn't help the victims....

Iraq Expels 2 Iranian Agents Captured in U.S. Operation

...One of the commanders, identified by officials simply as Chizari, was the third-highest-ranking official of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards' al-Quds Brigade, the unit most active in aiding, arming and training groups outside Iran, including Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad, U.S. officials said. The other commander was described as equally significant to Iran's support of foreign militaries but not as high-ranking.

American military forces nabbed the two men in raids last week. Their capture, U.S. officials said, represents the strongest evidence yet that Tehran's Shiite theocracy is meddling in Iraq's affairs and strengthening its relationship with the government in Baghdad.

U.S. defense officials familiar with the raids said the captured Iranians had detailed weapons lists, documents pertaining to shipments of weapons into Iraq, organizational charts, telephone records and maps, among other sensitive intelligence information. Officials were particularly concerned by the fact that the Iranians had information about importing modern, specially shaped explosive charges into Iraq, weapons that have been used in roadside bombs to target U.S. military armored vehicles.

Shaped charges focus the energy of a blast, allowing shrapnel to burst through vehicles, sometimes even if they are heavily armored. U.S. military officials have long said they believed Iran was responsible for sending such weapons -- along with others, such as advanced sniper rifles -- into Iraq to help insurgents and militia groups.

"The evidence shows that they were exactly up to the things our suspicions indicated," said one U.S. defense official.

Adding to the political sensitivity of the situation, the two men were detained while inside the compound of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, one of the most powerful Shiite leaders in Iraq. The Bush administration is hoping Hakim can build a moderate coalition of Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish parties that can bring national reconciliation to a fractured Iraq.

The Iraqi government decided to honor Tehran's claims that the two detainees had diplomatic immunity. U.S. officials had argued that although the men had diplomatic passports, they were operating under aliases and therefore not immune.

Despite their frustration at the release of the Iranians, U.S. officials said a strong message has been sent to Iran that its operatives will be tracked down and that it will be held accountable for its activities in Iraq.

"Iranians have been pushing the envelope in Iraq and elsewhere, and it's a good thing they learn there are consequences," said a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

U.S. officials said they now had a treasure trove of data from computers and documents and the lists of weaponry recently shipped to Iraq.

"The materials they had will factor into additional planning for operations and will likely be very helpful," said a U.S. defense official. "But with weapons and advanced IEDs [improvised explosive devices] coming into the country, we've identified a major problem."...

Saddam Hussein in court
Saddam was convicted in November of slaughtering 148 Shia Muslims in Dujail in 1982

Saddam Hussein was hanged early today for his crimes against humanity. The former dictator of Iraq was hooded, led to the gallows in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, which houses his former presidential palace, before being executed without ceremony in front of Iraqi and American officials.

I'd have to disagree. Killing someone because killing is wrong is not only confusing, but within its own logic...wrong.

Forcing someoneto live in prison is often worse than the immediate release of death. I don't believe in any sort of hereafter, no holy punishment or reward, so to me, death is the ultime release, they're getting off scott free, they no longer have to suffer punishment, any remorse thay may have felt now or in the future, no ridicule, or anything.

Death isn't a punishment, nor is it a deterrent...so why continue to use it?

Wouldn't it be just awful to be as confused as this koskid?

Well, that's what happens when you sniff glue!

"Death is not a deterrent."

Uh huh.

Don't see a whole lot of dead people committing crimes around here.

Nor, to take on the other half of the equation, do I see a lot of gang bangers trying to mount frontal attacks on police evidence lockers to get their drugs back. I wonder if that has anything to do with all those armed police in that building?

Nor, now that I think about it, do you see a lot of armed robberies of gun stores, despite the desirables within.

Naw, surely there's no deterrent effect to death.

You may not LIKE the death penalty, sister, but when you say that NO ONE fears death, that's just stupid.

The more I read about Stalin, the more I believe that Saddam resembled him more then he resembled Hitler. The cult of personality, the belief in terror for terror's sake, the utter contempt he had for his own people, the idea of the "continuous terror", the show trials, the brutality to even his own family (he had his son-in-laws executed), the purging of the old guard Ba'athists, the self exalted status as a so called "military genius".

When you (impersonal "you"; "one") muddle through, and actually THIMK for yourself, repeatedly moving through a complex set of IF--THEN causal relationships, while RESEARCHING the background for those human dynamics, you are rewarded even as you generate less-than-insightful 'conclusions' along the way...

Saddam: the end

Saddam Hussein in court
Saddam was convicted in November of slaughtering 148 Shia Muslims in Dujail in 1982

Saddam Hussein was hanged early today for his crimes against humanity. The former dictator of Iraq was hooded, led to the gallows in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone, which houses his former presidential palace, before being executed without ceremony in front of Iraqi and American officials.

The End

iraq in context [Victor Davis Hanson]
In the general condemnation of neo-conservatism, we forget, at least as it pertains to foreign policy, it arose from a variety of causes, not the least as the reaction against the moral bankruptcy of both rightist realism and leftist appeasement.

We were reminded of those poles these past few days with news that confirmed Arafat's order to murder American diplomats in Khartoum. That apparently had made no affect on Bill Clinton, at least if it were really true as legend claims that such a terrorist much later was the most frequent overnight foreign guest to the Clinton White House.

Add in not just just the inaction after the first World Trade Center bombing, or Khobar Towers or the USS Cole, but all the other weird elements of appeasement, from Carter sending Ramsey Clark to beg for the hostages to Clinton dispatching Warren Christopher to sit on the Damascus tarmac and his own later praising of Iranian "democracy" as liberal.

But the antipode is just as bad, when we recall selling out the Kurds to appease the Shah, Turks, and the Iraqis, the deal for arms for hostages with the theocracy, arming the crazies in Afghanistan to fight the Soviets, playing off Saddam versus Khomeini, letting the Kurds and Shiites hang in the wind in 1991, the coddling of the Pakistani dictators and the House of Saud, and the infusion of Gulf money into the law firms, investment houses and arms consortia in Washington and New York, staffed with ex-administration "wise men" from both parties.

In that context, Iraq in the climate of post-9/11 was an effort to find a consistent US position of toughness with terrorists and murderous dictators, and principled consistent support for reformers.

For all the sorrow in Iraq, that vision is not over, and can still be realized if we stay calm and unyielding. I was reminded of what real woe was from reading today of Churchill in May-June 1940 learning that France was lost, Belgium lost, Holland lost, an entire British army trapped in Flanders and Dunkirk, told that there were no more RAF reserves, and about 200 tanks in all of Britain-and in great spirits eating breakfast at 4am, with cigar, trying to lecture the above, strengthen those at home, and without doubt of eventual victory.

If the words "Human" and "Rights" appear in an organization's title, said organization is NOT in the business of assuring ANYONE's human rights....

From The Corner at [Link: www.nationalreview.com...]

re: Nobody Favor's Saddam's Execution [Michael Rubin]

Of course, the Iraqis do favor capital punishment and that’s what matters. His death will be broadly popular, just as the deaths of his sons were. Human Rights Watch is free to lobby against capital punishment, but it is indefensible that Human Rights Watch told the Iraqi tribunal that HRW would withhold evidence it had removed from iraq in 1991 about the chemical attacks on the Iraqi Kurds unless the Tribunal agreed to abandon the death penalty. And, it is rich that so many European governments that once enabled Saddam now take such a stand. Had various governments—the U.S. government included—abandoned their “realist” notions for a few moments and taken a no-nonsense toward Saddam’s human rights abuses in the 1980s, he may not have spun so far out of control. Will there be an upsurge in violence? Terrorists will use it as an excuse—all the better to get media attention and shake confidence—but Baathist insurgents privately say they will be glad to see Saddam go. He long since stopped being an entity. Unrepentant Baathists blame Saddam for their downfall just as unrepentant Communists blame Mikhail Gorbachev. Attacks will continue apace, though, all the more so as Baathists compete to fill the void.

I guess the Radical Left has blocked Stalin's crimes out and everyone whom they dislike (including the current President himself) is always a fascist or a Nazi, forgetting that Lenin and Stalin along with their lackeys such as Yagoda, Yezhov and Beria (all secret police chiefs), created a state that was even more callous and ferocious (if you could believe it) then Nazi Germany. By the way Stalin was just about every bit an anti Semite as Hitler was.

As I mentioned earlier, no.

The monsters generally died in bed. Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot (possibly - he was "on trial" by the Khmer Rouge, and his death has always struck me as interestingly timed), Enver Hoxha, and many others, including King Hassan of Morocco. Idi Amin, as I recall, died (quite insane) in exile, in his bed, and Milosevic died by his own hand, as did Hitler.

I can't think of anyone else executed after an open, fair trial.

AND WE MADE IT POSSIBLE!

(Forgive the shouting - but it's worth shouting about).

This may sound cynical, but the goverment and Iraqi government were overjoyed with the death of Gerald Ford so they could coincide Saddam's hanging with the arrival of Gerald Ford's body to the Capital. They hope that Gerald Ford will keep Saddam's execution and subsequent spike in violence in Iraq out of the American news media.

No flaming for Mama Winger or anyone else. Here is the fact. Capital punishment is ordained by God.

Genesis 9:6 Whoever shed's mans blood, By man his blood shall be shed.
Romans 9:22 What if God,wanting to show his wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath, prepared for destruction.

I am a believer, and maybe I should feel for Saddam's soul. Sorry, but I don't. If ever there was a vessel made for destruction, then this was him. I am very happy and self satisfied. If I'm wrong, then God will have to convict me. If He does, I will repent, but as of now I feel that hanging was far to humane a death for someone as evil and cruel as Saddam.
I think he should have been given the treatment that some of our native Americans gave their enemies. Like peeling, for instance.

I had a large pizza order today from a group having a meeting at the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul today. The male person that I talked to was unable to tell me which specific building on campus they were in. I asked him several times and all he would tell me was that he was on the campus. To show how stupid he was I must point out that all buildings on the campus have the name of the building on a sign at the building entrance. I was just listening to Alan "Strawman" Colmes on his radio show. At one point, he suggested to a caller that Saddam's trial wasn't fair because there was no doubt he would be found guilty. For real! He supported this by asking a caller if there was any doubt about Saddam's guilt. The hostile caller naturally answered "no" and Colmes pretended that this made his point. His complaint is not a flawed trial process, it is the obviousness of the defendant's guilt. Does Alan mean by this that someone whose guilt is obvious should be released? The "logic" would seem to inevitable.

Saddam's death may or may not give the Prez a couple points but it does indeed show the left's inability to reconcile good from evil. Moral equivalence and all that. The truly telling story will be which network does/does not show the "Saddam Tape" of today's execution(s). If it were a contest in POL_CAT12 world, the first one to air the "Saddam Tape" would win. Unfortunately, I don't think there's many takers. However, were it an Air Force troop swinging from an "insurgent's" rope, I think it would be simulcast in HD!

He belongs to the Wisconsin Lutheran Synod, but they don't commission Army officers (too conservative :0),

WELS doesn't commission Chaplains in the military because of fellowship issues. However, they do assign ministers in areas to serve WELS members in the service, or put them in contact with local WELS ministers.

Missouri Synod is a mixed bag. On paper, they are quite orthodox, but the seminary has professors on staff who bring into question the inspiration of scripture. Many Missouri Synod pastors are very solid, others not so, to the extent that, again, they deny fundamental Christian doctrines.

Justice is the one thing you should always find

No Ms. Winger, you don't have it wrong, Saddam's death is not something to celebrate, especially knowing what fate is in store for him (no human could approach what he will be subjected to for eternity), but justice was done and for that, celebration is in order.

What do you mean?
- That there was no cult of personality in Nazi Germany?
Just watch one of Hitler's speeches, and the cheering crowds, willing blindly to obey and follow the Fuhrer.
- That Hilter didn't believe in terror for terror's sake? Just ask millions of Polish, Ukrainian and Russian citizens who slaughtered by the Nazis, even if a lot of Soviet citizens had first cheered the Germans (because they thought they would be liberated from Stalin's rule.)
- That Hitler didn't have contempt for his own people? When Hitler understood he would loose the war, he said he wouldn't shed a tear when the German people perished - it was their own fault. In the last months of the war, he ordered "Demolitions on Reich Territory" decree: the destruction of all German infrastructure. Not just to stop the Allies, but because he wanted Germany to perish together with him.
- That there were no show trials? The people who conspired against Hitler in 1944 did. But most of Hitler's victims were killed without a trial.
- The old guard (the SA) was purged in 1934! Even during his last days, Hitler ordered the execution of followers who had 'betrayed' him.
- And of course Hitler did consider himself a "military genius". He personally took command of the Germany from 1943 on, and almost certainly shortened the course of the war. Good foor us that he did listen to capable generals like Erwin Rommel.

OMFG MSNBC is going on about how harsh Saddam's childhood was, and how Tikrit (his hometown, duh) was under the control of the English. He was abused, y'know. This kind of production has to have been canned already...I guess we have another example of the MSM rallying behind the war effort...just like Benedict Arnold! Politics was Saddam's first love, ahead of even academics! This stuff is classic propaganda! Gosh, the drive-by-media is really good at preaching to us stoopid folks in Flyover LizardLand!

Sometimes, the world does not see justice done, and has to have faith that God is just and deals with each one of us in a just manner. How many millions felt cheated when Hitler dodged the trials he knew would be waiting for him? God has seen it fit to allow the Iraqi people to deliver justice to a man who wanted to be a god, dealing out arbitrary judgments of life and death on each citizen of that country during those evil times. The Iraqis needed to know that he was just a man. It will help their healing for the losses of their loved ones. He received more fairness in his trial than he ever dealt out to the people he ruled. Let it be written and so let it be done. He had months and months to make his peace with God before this day; if he did not, it is on his head, no one else's.

Um, not much makes sense to me. Saddam did very consciously model himself on Stalin - who, because he wasn't raving insane was actually worse (IMHO - but that's a judgement call) than Hitler.

The difference was, Hitler was so intense in his hatred, and caused so much hell outside of Germany, that his crimes could not be hidden. And his agenda was so hideous, it could not be apologized for. It lacked the "scientific" (forgive me while I spit and clear my mouth) and "uplifting" (forgive me again) and "universal" (you guessed, I need to spit several time) justifications of Stalin's regime that allowed Western intellectuals to apologize for it.

I would just like to take this opportunity to say that I have been home all night, in my studio. I wrote an entire song. It's an examination of the sickness known as EPS: Exploding Palestinian Syndrome, and just what it is that makes sufferers of EPS go tick tick tick boom. Guess I was inspired by knowing that one more major POS is off the planet.

The POS I refer to, by the way, DID have WMD's: I consider someone who pays tens of thousands of dollars to Pally sucide bombers, as someone wielding WMDs.

Then again, I forgot: Jews don't count.

However, I have also been visiting plenty of boards and reading all sorts of opinion. And I'd like to take the opportunity to say that Liberals, in my opinon, are SWINE. Really horrible, pathetic, traitorous swine and I hope every single liberal walking the Earth gets what they deserve.

And I'm not even a Republican.

So f*** liberals and f*** Saddam and cheers to Jack Daniel and his fine product for helping me write this little post.

Well put.

In the Arab mindthink, Hussein has always been stronger than the west simply because he stayed in power. He was invincible. Now that he is dead, the Baathists and to a degree the Sunnis can not unite behind the strongman, Saddam Hussein. People that were holding off, because they were afraid of his return will not worry as much now.

There will be sporadic violence in response but nothing that can not be handled, I believe the Iraqi citizens themselves may handle a lot of the problems today.

I truly can not understand the sentiment expressed by these life forms. Their hatred of one man and some of his subordinates is inexplicably irrational. And the Boston Globe advocated for Saddam till the end...

GLOBE EDITORIAL
A reason to keep Saddam alive
December 28, 2006

THERE ARE DIVERSE reasons for discontent with Tuesday's decision of an Iraqi appeals court upholding a death sentence for Saddam Hussein for the 1982 massacre of 182 men and boys in the Shi'ite town of Dujail. The independence of the judges who found him guilty of crimes against humanity has been questioned, as has a blatant lack of security for defense lawyers. Human-rights groups have lamented the rapidity of the judicial review conducted by the nine-judge appeals panel. And those who oppose the death penalty in all circumstances would prefer that Saddam serve a life sentence for his crimes.

But if the work of the Iraqi High Tribunal is viewed as an opportunity to establish historical truth, then the principal objection to carrying out the death sentence within 30 days, as the tribunal's charter mandates, is of a different order. Once Saddam is hanged for the single circumscribed crime against humanity he perpetrated in Dujail, his other, genocidal crimes against the Kurds, Shi'ites, and marsh Arabs cannot be tried and judged properly in a court of law.

The current Iraqi government claims that even after Saddam is put to death, his trial for the mass murder of some 180,000 Kurds in what he called the Anfal campaign of the late 1980s will continue. But there can be no true trial if the despot is not present in the courtroom to answer charges for the killing of Kurdish villagers with nerve gas and mustard gas, the executions by firing squads of Kurdish men and boys, and the herding of Kurdish women and children into lethal concentration camps.

Without a living Saddam to confront his accusers in court -- to answer for the slaughters of Shi'ites he commanded in 1991; his assassinations of leading Shi'ite clerics and political figures; and the draining of the southern marshes that destroyed an ancient way of life for 500,000 marsh Arabs -- justice will be cheated. Iraqis will lose their best chance to sift, challenge, and judge the evidence of Saddam's major crimes against humanity. They will lose the only opportunity they will ever have to prove a crucial historical truth by legal means.

That Iraqis need to have that truth validated is evident in each day's tragic toll of Sunnis killed for being Sunnis and Shi'ites for being Shi'ites. Saddam wrapped his Ba'ath Party in an ideological veil of Arab nationalism, but the reality of his regime was known to Iraqis. There was a racist contempt behind his slaughter of Kurds, and a sectarian scorn in his massacres of Shi'ites.

During his reign, Saddam sowed seeds of sectarian fear and hatred. That is a truth that both the Sunni Arabs and Shi'ites of Iraq need to recognize and accept if they are to escape the inferno of their civil war.

Great news! Couldn't happen to a more deserving POS. I read an article in the AJT, and they have already started the revivisionism, the article mentioned Saddam had started two wars with "hundereds of thousands of casualties" rather than the correct figure of tens of millions. There were a few other mistakes. All of them just happen to minimize that barbarity of Saddams acts. Why does the media consistantly and drastically understate casualties from Saddams regime while consistantly and drastically overstating casualties from the war and occupation, then blaming every one of the casualties on Bush. Of course Saddam is now being made into the victim, the old liberal "he had a bad childhood" excuse which goes over real well with those of us who did have bad childhoods and never killed or tortured anybody. Its hard to be understanding. From what I have been reading, the radical left believes Saddam should be pardoned and Bush tried. Of course the Rads would never consider pardoning Bush of his "crimes against humanity", only Saddam.

I don't get the people over at Daily Koz. This bastard is responsible for the barbaric deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people and all they can talk about is how Bush is a war criminal. I'm not a big fan of Bush but I'm sick and tired of people saying he's a war criminal when the islamofascists pave the way for civilian casualties by hiding amongst the population. What makes the slap on a wrist Hague Court more fair than having Saddam face the Iraqi's in a Iraqi court of law for crimes committed against Iraqis? He was on trial for the murder of iraqi citizins, not someone from a foreign country. Is it because of the leftist world's fascination with being anti-death penalty? What a frickin joke. Can someone please explain to me exactly what war crimes Bush has committed? I don't see gas chambers, torture chambers, mobile killing units, starvation, nervve gas, serin gas, mustard gas, cyanide being utilized by the

Whould these people be saying FDR was a war criminal for bombing Dresden and Tokyo or for even going to war against Hitler and Hirohito? When did elements of this country suddenly lose the balls to defend itself? I mean c'mon, they criticize iraqi americans who lost multiple family members to Saddams torture chambers for dancing in the streets in Dearborn Michigan but never once criticized the Palestinians for dancing in the streets in the hours after the WTC fell? All this moral realtivism is sickening.

That all being said, and even tipping a finger to the fact that the things in Iraq are messed up and that Bush and friends have made some serious errors in waging this battle, I hope Saddam rots in the deepest pits of hellfire and brimstone alongside Adolf and company, Petan, Stalin, Amin, the Mufti of Jerusalem, Tojo, Benito, Milosivich, the 9/11 hijackers and Arafat.

Hear, Hear! I agree with your statements and your sentiments.

The liberals of this country have totally lost their perspective. Used to be liberals had reasonable causes and behaved in a reasonable manner. Now their causes tend to contradict their other causes. They confuse loud rhetoric with logical discourse and their blind hatred of one man makes them oblivious to any reasonable discussion. I used to think their judgement was ruled by their emotions instead of logic, but their continued comments concerning killing President Bush, and in fact anyone that disagrees with their agenda leads me to believe that their judgement isn't even ruled by emotion.

Those folks at the Kos are either deliberately stupid, ineffectively sarcastic, or mentally ill.

On what plane of thought can they suggest Bush is a war criminal and mass murderer, based on 3000 dead American soldiers (thank God for their service) and the wildly insane figure of 650,000 Iraqi civilian deaths? On that basis shouldn't they be many times more critical of FDR and Lincoln?

Note to Koskooks - at Gettysburg, Americans died at a rate one thousand times greater than they have in Iraq, and the Civil War was arguably Lincoln's fault because he had the audacity to speak against slavery, and then to get elected president, inflaming the South into seceding. So all the Civil War dead are his fault, right?

I feel ambivalence about this whole thing. I'm not sure that the right thing was done.

Let us not forget that Saddam was building a secular society. He tried very hard to root out all traces of Islam mentality. Iraq had a strong wine-making industry. Boys and girls went to school together, sat in the same classroom and studied the same things. Iraq had Western-style beaches where women were wearing Western-style swimsuits. The streets were full of arab beauties wearing short skirts and make-up.

What are we going to have now? An islamic society where women have no rights. But under a guise (at least temporary) of "democracy".

684 Low Tech Red Neck  Sat, Dec 30, 2006 2:59:35am

I think it's more like what are we NOT going to have now. For starters, no mass graves or poison gas attacks.

I'm not justifying Saddam. He was a dictator and made many people suffer. I'm not convinced that there will be less suffering now when we will have an islamofascist state in Iraq as soon as the American troops will withdraw with the next administration. I do hope I'm wring. But history will show.

My ambivalence is connected to the fact that we had a secular leader in the midst of the islamofascist madness. Women fared better under his rule. In the end, he got convicted for what? - for killing 148 people. This is terrible. But how many people were killed by other islamofascist dictators.

By the way, he was not convicted for killing the Kurds, because the Kurds sided with Iran during the war. They were traitors. Any government who wants to survive deals very harshly with its traitors. The people trying him recognized this and did not charge him with the death of the Kurds (which were in thousands, if I'm not mistaken).

689 ex cathedra  Sat, Dec 30, 2006 3:28:07am

I'll just add that, in my opinion, the mass killings of traitors are less important on the moral scale than the oppression of all completely innocent Iraqi women. You put a burqa on them and deny them education - and you practically deprive them of life - even though they are formally alive. I'm a woman and I empathize strongly with the plight of women around the world.

#632 Outrider

I truly can not understand the sentiment expressed by these life forms. Their hatred of one man and some of his subordinates is inexplicably irrational. I can't figure out what is driving this hatred as most of these people are well educated, "professional" type people that have been educated in logic and reason, but none of the education is reflected in their comments. To attempt a dialog with them is like teaching elephants to dance.

What can I say?

The Left are basically parasites who prefer compulsion over consent as their way of dealing with other people, thus their love of dictatorships.

When they see a dictator in the dock, they see their own hopes and desires go with him.

And when they see a dictator doing a dance at the end of a rope they see themselves perishing with him.

Their hatred of Bush the Tyrannicide will intensify because they will see him as an active hazard to their our lives. So we should expect to see them become more explicit in their desire to see President Bush die.

Watch for the first "Kill Bush" bumper stickers.

#632 Outrider:

I can't figure out what is driving this hatred [of Bush] as most of these people are well educated, "professional" type people that have been educated in logic and reason, but none of the education is reflected in their comments.

Let me explain.

I used to follow the Usenet newsgroups and read the left-wing articles on the [Link: www.commondreams.org...] compendium, and I saw how and when this Bush-hatred got started:

During the 2000 election campaign, the Left weren't fans of Bush but they didn't hate him either. In fact, they weren't fans of Al Gore either, and so many on the hard-core Left (those who are now the KOSsacks and DU loons) defected and voted for Ralph Nader.

Then came the disastrous election recount mess in Florida, which was finally stopped by the U.S. Supreme Court which the Left regarded as dominated by Bush-leaning conservatives like Scalia and Rehnquist. This led to the Left's conspiracy theory that Bush and his conservative allies on the Court stole the 2000 election. Once Gore conceded, the Left went ballistic and the venom against Bush started up big-time. It has never ended.

Another reason this conspiracy theory got legs was that Terry McAuliffe, then head of the Democratic National Committee, found it politically expedient to drum up votes among American blacks in 2002 by telling them that Bush stole the election by "disenfranchising" blacks in Florida. That gave this conspiracy theory a kind of official imprimatur. It's shameful that a national party (the Dems) would wallow in this kind of paranoid conspiracy mongering, but there you are.

So unlike every other Republican or conservative President in recent decades, the Left really believes that Bush is not a legitimate President. And that's why they hate him. If Bush had won Florida decisively in 2000, without any recount, all this would have been avoided.

You can go to these online forums yourself, browse their archives from that time period, and watch as the Left's attitudes toward Bush hardened into paranoia.

#210 carridine

100% True. Like it or not, this IS how things are handled over there.

What sounds more ridiculous. A KNOWN mass murderer having a fair trial, with 30 days of appeals before sentence is carried out, OR a known mass murderer having a fair trial, then having 20 years of appeals OR maybe even being put in prison for life with tv, books, college level courses, visitation rights...maybe even the possibility of parole. Which sounds the most twisted...?

As much of a jerk I think Bush can be, this was, unfortunatly, a no win situation for him, even though the ending was proper. He would be blamed if the US tried Saddam and found him guilty (but then we would have been talking about US courts, so even that would be questionable), and he would be blamed if Iraq tried Saddam.

I'm glad he was tried in Iraq. I wasn't sure at first, but I think had he been tried in the USA, this outcome would have never, ever happened, and our tax dollars would have been supporting him for the rest of his life, if he would even have been convicted for life.

Good morning, fellow Lizards.

In response to #473 manofaiki's question, the number of at least semi-genocidal dictators being tried and executed by their own people is short but significant. Mainly due to the majority of them being the result of the Allied victory in World War Two. To wit;

1. Benito Mussolini- Along with his mistress, Clara Petacci, summarily tried and executed by Italian paritsans along with twelve others at Lake Como, 28 Apr 1945. (The Vatican objected to both the execution, as well as Mussolini & Petacci's corpses being hung by the heels in front of a gas station afterward.)

2. Pierre Laval- Three-time premier of France, tried by French tribunal for collaboration with the Nazis, including the detention, transportation, and execution of Jews in France under the Vichy government. Executed by firing squad in Fresnes Prison yard, Paris, 15 Oct 1945.

3. Vidkun Quisling- Norwegian Fascist leader, arrested in Oslo following German defeat. Tried and convicted by the reconstituted Norwegian high court on charges of (1) overthrowing legitimate government in pro-Nazi coup in 1940, (2) aiding and abetting Germans in suppressing resistance to occupation, (3) assisting in raising of "ethnic" divisions of both Wehrmacht and Schutzstaffel (SS), specifically the Norwengen Legion (SS), and (4) the detention, transportation, and execution of Jews and others. Executed by firing squad ar Oslo, 24 Oct 1945.

4. Bela Imredy- Former Hungarian Finance Minister, Hungarian premier under Nazi occupation. Tried and convicted of collaboration with the Germans, including detention, transportation, and execution of Jews, among other crimes. Executed by firing squad, 28 Feb 1946.

There are no doubt other similar examples, but these fit manofaiki's parameters- dictators who caused the deaths of large numbers of their own people, who were later tried and excuted by their own people. Admittedly, Mussolini, the best-known example, is a borderline case due to the nature of the rump tribunal which tried and executed him.

Ahhhhhh, because they are responsibility shirking parasites.

Anti-death penalty is indeed the ultimate shirking of responsibility.

It is much clearer now.

That's part of it.

The end result is (if you'll pardon my repeating myself) that being inherently parasitic they cannot take "no" for an answer to their demands for the state of obedience and the material goods they need to exist. If they did so they would wither away and die.

A dictator, like Saddam, does not have to take "no" for answer. Thus the parasites are by necessity inclined to favor dictatorships over citizen-ruled republics.

When they see a dictator in the dock, they see their own hopes and desires go with him.

And when they see a dictator doing a dance at the end of a rope they see themselves perishing with him.

Trying Saddam in the U.S. was never an option seriously proposed by anyone.

The alternative to Saddam being tried by Iraqis was to have Saddam tried by an international court of justice in The Hague. That was what the Left wanted. The fact that the Milosovic trial in The Hague was an embarrassing 5 year farce which ended without a verdict (because Milosovic killed himself) doesn't bother them one bit. In fact, after Milosovic killed himself, they still congratulated themselves that the legal process had been followed. That's the Left for you: The process matters more than the result.

726 The Other Les  Sat, Dec 30, 2006 5:22:27am

To continue:

The hatred by the parasites of President Bush is going to intensify because they will now see him as an active hazard to their own lives. So we should not be surprised to see them become more explicit in their desire to see President Bush die.

We should watch for the first "Kill Bush" bumper stickers.

Also, expect one or more assassination attempts.

Also, to a great extent, the attitude of these individuals toward the likes of Saddam is that of envy. They see someone they would like to emulate, and whom they believe they are entitled to emulate, as follows;

1. I am a progressive. I am therefore on a higher moral plane than anyone else.

2. (1) proves that I am innately superior to all others. I am therefore the one best suited to rule, and gain the rewards of doing so.

3. (1) and (2) together should be obvious to all others, so they should therefore recognize my inherent specialness and general wonderfulness and obey me as I manage their lives for them- to my benefit, as I am far more important than they are.

4. Anyone who does not acknowledge the truth of (1), (2), and (3) is both stupid and evil, and must be destroyed.

You or I can see that this entire argument is built on a false premise- namely, that those who style themselves as "progressive" are somehow different or inherently better than the rest of the human race. But the ones who claim this label are convinced that it is not merely true, but an immutable law of nature.

Or in other words, they believe in a cult of self-worship.

This probably explains most of the posters on DailyKos, HuffPo, and DU. As well as anyone who ever thought that all answers to any problem could be found in the works of Marx, Engels, or Marcuse. Or Nietsche, for that matter.

Just an observation.

The advent of television had a lot to do with that.

50 years ago, the wisdom of the older generation was honored.

But television targets the young generation because they consume the products that the sponsors advertise. So TV shows have tended to favor youth and downplay or even make fun of the idea that old people might know more than young people about how to run this country. It's rare to find a TV show that portrays the parents as the heroes and the kids as the villains or the stupid ones.

I'd like to divert everyone's attention to 3 things:

1. The caption that says "activists from a human rights group"
2. The "Saddam is a hero of Islam" sign the "human rights activists" are holding
3. The Mark of Satan (AP)

Seriously, I understand that Fox has little choice but to use the AP's garbage, but did they have to add this one in? What the hell were they thinking? And is the AP so shameless that they can put up stuff like this in public with a straight face? People really need to start holding them accountable.

Where are these leftists getting this figure that over 500,000 iraqi's have been killed in this war and how could they honestly say that the U.S. military was the cause of their deaths? From what you hear on the news, it seems like a great deal of civilian casualties are caused by shiite sunni violence. Are they implying that if we left iraq alone and left saddam in power, there would be no civilian deaths? I thought that was happening on a frequent basis under the now ex-dictator's watch.

I like the blog comment on the BBC saying that UN approval is now needed when a war is started somewhere. Sure glad we didn't need the League of Nation's sign off before WWII.

Of course the vatican is condemning the execution even though many in the muslim/arab world want christians of all types dead.

5. Hermann Goering

My point was that it is unnecessary, maybe even absurd, to tiptoe through the Bible picking and choosing passages that suit a particular agenda while ignoring others.

It is not "tiptoeing through the Bible, picking and choosing" as you assert. Orthodox Christianity views the Bible as a whole. However, one must use the passages of one area of scripture that is perfectly clear to interpret passages that are not clear elsewhere. The example you gave was quite simplistic in the fact that in Acts, Christ's vision to Peter showed clearly that the Old Testament ceremonial laws were no longer binding. The moral codes, however, remain as curb, mirror, and guide.

Saddam need to die not out of vengence, justice, or our enjoyment. His death is necessary for the progress of Iraq. It is a matter of pragmatisism. Now no one can use his reinstatement as a incentive to opposing the existing government. You can bet that there are a lot of long faces among the "insurgency". The left will also be disappointed; look for their "concern". And please note that all across the world tinpot dictators will notice that their spincters are a little tighter tonight.

It[Leviticus Law] is binding for you if you choose to be circumcised into the Abrahamic Covenant.

traveler is incorrect to use the word supercede[I word I hate associated with our benevolent Creator]. G-d open up a Covenant with Gentiles with ears that hear thru Christ so we wild branches could graft into His olive tree. Both Covenants need and get the faithfulness of G-d.

#144 republic - Tell me about it. It appears that the best they can muster is a bunch of ad hominem attacks at Bush, his wife, his father, his brother, etc. I did not bother to read enough of them to see if they attacked his dog. Probably did though, given the mindset (an oxymoron that since there is no mind to set in that crowd).

The only reason that Bush I didn't roll on to Bagdad was that the Suadis put pressure on him not to. They were concerned that the result might have been a Shia state next door to their Wahabi crud. Unfortunate that. It could have saved us a lot of people, both Iraqi and American.

Not everything Bush I or II did was right. Not everything Clinton did was wrong. But we are probably better off without a psychopath who was trying to construct nuclear weapons and who did use poison gas on his own population. Now to deal with his buddy Imadinnerjacket with his 12ers and the Wahabi crowd spread around by the folks from Saudi Arabia.

#115 Windhorse - They did the long drop which snaps the neck and severs the spinal cord. Not like our good "buddies" in Iran that do a short drop by hauling you up on a crane. The long drop sends you into shock and unconsciousness almost immediately. You do not twitch a lot. The short drop takes up to 20 minutes to kill you as you strangle and have your vascular system to the brain cut off. You actually die of heart failure in most cases since the response of the vascular system is to try to pump the heart faster to get blood to the brain. Rather gratuitous cruelty, but that is the way Iran likes it.

I didn't include them because (A) I was unfamiliar with the exact circumstances of their (richly-deserved) demise (remarkably similar to Mussolini in most respects), and (2) while they certainly did cause massive suffering and significant death amongst their own people, it was mainly due to incompetence and irrational paranoia (typical of dictators across the political spectrum), rather than a deliberate policy targeting all or part of their own populations. Mussolini conducted genocidal warfare in both Albania and Ethiopia, as well as what amounted to "ethnic cleansing" against Sicily. His excuse? The Mafia was strongest there at the time. As one of my uncles who was in Italy with the ACE in 1943-44 once commented, "Mussolini apparently figured that there was only room enough for one bunch of crooks in Italy, and he wanted it to be his bunch."

But I do see your point. Let's officially add those two idiots to the roster, by all means.

Altho I have avoided the Tv all day I find the coverage of the MSM pretty pooor as usual, showing pictures of him as a young man, and as a leader, and pictures of him with his grandchildren, and pictures of him coming out from his hole, and lots of pictures of him when he was old and weak and under the thumbs of the court. There was very little coverage of his atrocities. They started to be shown on the MSM at about 9 pm. I also find the media rather ghoulish.

Some people are asking why this happened so quickly. I think it was to remove the possibility of the dems putting him back in charge of Iraq to solve the dem exit from Iraq problem, and to wipe out anything that Pres Bush accomplished. M.S. says it is to keep him from calling people to testify and to keep him quiet about which countries supplied him with the poison gas etc used on the Kurds.

It is sad to hold a 7'th century man or a 14'th century man to 21'st century theoretical standards of politically correct wars, which is a concept that we are playing with and don't know yet whether it works. We also don't know what century Iraq lives in, or Iran or Saudi Arabia. We have walked a mile in his shoes of trying to hold Iraq together. Similarly we under Carter were judgmental of the shah not living up to US concepts of standards and look what that got us. Iraq was a checkmate for Iran. Now we don't have that checkmate and what do we do about Iran? We supported the overthrow by the Shiites of the Sunni rulers. The British had chosen the Sunnis to deal with. We'll find out how it is to deal with Shiites.

I keep getting the feeling that the leader of Iraq is making deals and I wonder if this sudden prosecution of the death sentence was part of a deal, and also the putting off indefinitely of the executions of others who were slated to be killed this weekend.

I also don't see why he had to be hung if he wanted to be shot.

Milosevic died in prison after a 5 year trial that still wasn't near conclusion when he assumed room temperature.

Perhaps leftists like Colmes believe that Hussein did not get a fair trial because it did not take at least 5 years to allow him to try to defend himself in court.

The worst the Hague Court would have done to Milosevic was sentence him to life in prison.

His life wasn't even on the line and the trial took 5 years.

Can you imagine what would have happened if we had agreed to allow Hussein to be tried by an international court like the Hague? The trial would have taken 10 years.

I always knew Saddam was a coward. He had a gun on him when they pulled him out of that spider hole and he never used it, either on himself or to fight the US soldiers that captured him.

His sons fought to the death. Many of his followers fought to the death. But he never would.

True story about Saddam's sense of self preservation:

During an arab summit with most of the region's leaders in the room, the lights went out for about 3 seconds. When they came back on, Saddam's chair was empty.

Of all the leaders in the room seated around the table, Saddam was the only one that dived headfirst under the table while the lights were out.

From the Financial Times:

Even the last minutes of Mr Hussein’s life seemed to reinforce that the old order was gone for good. One of the witnesses, Judge Munir Haddad, was quoted by CNN as saying that as the noose was being tightened around Mr Hussein’s neck, one of the hangmen shouted out “Long live Moqtada al-Sadr.”

“Moqtada al-Sadr,” said Mr Hussein mockingly, of the radical young cleric Shia who could hardly have been of much consequence to him while he was president, but who now is among the most powerful men in Iraq. According to the report, those were Mr Hussein’s last words.

Speaking of Milosevic, there are some allegations that he was actually, in effect, murdered... that they deliberately prescribed him things, or injected him with things, that would interfere with his heart medicine in such a way that it would lose its effectiveness... and so he would die in prison.

My guess is, the trial wasn't going the way they wanted it to go, and it was beginning to look to them like he might be found not guilty...
