The Night of the Blinking Pelosi (aka, SOTU Thread 4)

Wed, Jan 24, 2007 at 9:11:47 am PST

I just took another look at my recording of the State of the Union speech, to see if I was imagining the amazingly rapid blinking of Nancy Pelosi.

Nope.

During one segment when the camera stayed on President Bush and Pelosi, I clocked her at 60 to 90 Blinks Per Minute. Impressive. Imagine what was happening inside her head.

I'm not too impressed with her, nor with most dems in general!

I never watch the View.. but for some reason I did today.

Rosie was very emphatic that someone needs to stand up and call for the impeachment of Bush. I need to go google her exact statement.

The Islamists welcomed Rosie with open arms.

Maybe the botox is loosing its oomph and her eyelids are doing like a window shade does when you pull it down and let it snap back up.

As to what goes on inside her head, just go read the writings of Lenin, Stalin, etc. and that will tell you.

Therefore You delivered them into the hand of their enemies, who distressed them. In the time of their suffering when they cried to You, You heard them from heaven, and according to Your abundant mercy You gave them deliverers, who saved them from their enemies.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before You; therefore You left them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had dominion over them. Yet when they turned and cried to You, You heard them from heaven, and many times You delivered them according to Your mercies,

And reproved and warned them, that You might bring them again to Your law. Yet they acted presumptuously and did not heed Your commandments, but sinned against Your ordinances, which by keeping, a man shall live. And they turned a stubborn shoulder, stiffened their neck, and would not listen.

CALABASAS, Calif. - A new energy drink doesn't promise to give you the juice to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix, but it does hope to give you a "Liquid Experience."

Beverage Concepts says its nonalcoholic "Liquid Experience" drinks, named for Hendrix's breakthrough album, "Are You Experienced?" will debut in April.

Ingredients: 40% quaalude, 40% speedball, 20% half-digested tuna sammich.

Rosie said more than just someone should "impeach" Bush. She also defended Clinton and his impeachment, that is was for an "affair" in the Oval Office and called Bush something akin to a dictator. And how last night Bush honored the man who saved someone in the subway but Bush sent 3 thousand to die in Iraq, that if they were in the subway, they would have been saved.

I know.. I need the transcript.

30 jill e  Wed, Jan 24, 2007 7:28:15am

Our blink rate reflects psychological arousal in the manner of a polygraph test. The normal, resting blink rate of a human being is 20 closures per minute, with the average blink lasting one quarter of a second (Karson 1992). Significantly faster rates may reflect emotional stress, as aroused, e.g., in the fight-or-flight response.

The blink reflex originates in paleocircuits of the AMPHIBIAN [Lizards!) brain. Nervous impulses travel from vision centers of the superior colliculi to the facial nerve's motor nucleus, causing involuntary contractions in the eyelid portion of orbicularis oculi muscles.

Neuro-notes. We blink faster when excited because eyelid movements reflect bodily arousal levels established by our brain stem's reticular activating system (RAS). Emotion from the limbic system stimulates the RAS to act on our midbrain's substantia nigra, which releases the excitatory chemical, dopamine, to the superior colliculi (Karson 1992:417). Thus, we bat our eyelids faster in courtship when speaking in public, and when lying.

34 new2thezoo  Wed, Jan 24, 2007 7:30:16am

I heard a professional on body language say, that when you rapidly blink your eyes, it means that you are lying. Also if you look to the left, when being spoken to, signifies the same thing. Fox usually runs segments with a body language specialist. Would be interesting to see what she picked up.

35 angst  Wed, Jan 24, 2007 7:30:54am

#23 Yes, it is a sign of being deceitful, also a sign of a lack of self-confidence. Bush's blinking rate was widely reported (as being too high) in the 2000 election. It was said that fast blinkers don't win elections.

I bet his blinking rate is a lot lower now.

Then don't laugh. It's a free country - for now. And for crying out loud - Pres. Bush One threw up on the prime minister of Japan (who handled the situation very well) - some people will mock. Personally, I was freaked out by it, but impressed that they all handled it well. Again, you don't have to laugh, but you don't control other people's laughter.

As some of you guys count eye blinks, I've counted 28 American soldiers killed over the weekend.

And probably lots of other bad things happened over the weekend. It's still funny to watch Rep. Pelosi bat her eyes.

I think you are right. She was probably quite nervous, and the blinking was a reaction to that. She had reportedly spilled coffee or chocolate on herself before the big moment and had to change clothes - I'd say that was nerves as well.

I personally don't blame her at all. (I still enjoyed the mocking of her, though.) It gave me a flashback to junior high, thinking of her position. I had to stand up on stage before the entire school and give a little speech about the Drama Club. If there hadn't been a podium, I would have fallen into a quivering heap. (Somehow, appearing on stage as someone else is totally different from appearing there as yourself.)

Eyelid spasms (see Eyelid twitch)

Wow! I just realised mine cleared up recently. Guess I was getting used to it, which shocks me since it was totally frikking distracting.

Charles,
You used a metronome to clock her, didn't you? LOL Awesome.

Take a close look at her expression when Bush introduces the heroic sergeant from the Iraq front. Her intense disgust is obvious. Pelosi really really hates the military.

Obama kept his eyes on the floor most of the time. Was he 1)sleeping like some others 2)hiding his facial expressions from the cameras or 3)concentrating ( to give him the benefit of the doubt )

I've noticed Pelosi's eyelash flutter intensifies whenever she's
agitated. Specifically, after she lost the Murtha appointment and when she was questioned over the Somoa embarrassment.

Her lashes were batting so hard it looked like she was a Mae West
impersonator.

Could have been worse for Nancy.....holding back some monstrous farts.

She probably has a nervous disorder. Unfortunately, it is visible for all to see - others can see her emotions. Doctors may argue the last point. But, I think it’s clear.

As another poster pointed out, the disorder could be chemically induced. It’s not uncommon for an alcoholic or sedative addict to have involuntary motions (excessive licking of the lips, excessive movements of the tong and other movements).

Her medical condition is probably confidential information. But, it’s a real drawback to have a medical condition that is visible. There is no law against it – just a drawback.

Hopefully she is not bipolar. Nancy “Blinking” Pelosi’s physical condition will just have to be tolerated for the time being.

Has any one checked the tape to see if it's Morse code? I know she's not smart enough to pull anything like that off on her own but we should be looking at the possibility of a computer chip implanted in her head by the CIA. That stuff was very popular in the San Fran area a few decades ago. You know the drill - go into the government clinic for your methadone, come out with a splitting headache and half a Speak-and-Spell crammed into your skull. Not to mention we're talking pre-alkaline batteries - those thing start leaking after a couple of years. It may have been taken over by some rogue agent trying to contact Osama - or maybe just order some take-out from a retired agent's sandwich shop. You never know - it could happen.

Has anyone ever considered the possibility that she was trying to blink W out of the building, like Barbara Eden would do to Larry Hagman on I Dream of Jeannie?

In all seriousness, doesn't Pelosi Galore remind you of Paula Prentiss in The Stepford Wives....after she was turned into an automaton?
