Video: Muslim Students Disrupt Daniel Pipes Speech at UC Irvine

Thu, Feb 1, 2007 at 6:01:44 pm PST

Last night at the University of California Irvine, the Muslim Students Union staged a threatening, thuggish disruption of a talk by Daniel Pipes. LGF readers were there with their cameras.

UC Irvine is a hotbed of Muslim radicalism, as we’ve documented many times at LGF, but you may not have understood how bad it is until you see this. (Watch out for a burst of white noise near the middle.)

Here’s another longer video.

UPDATE at 2/1/07 6:57:11 pm:

Since the embedded video doesn’t seem to be working for some reason, here’s a link to the Google Video page.

I just KNEW that would happen!

2 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:03:03pm

Interestingly, I was just at this instant writing an email to someone on this very topic; go to LGF, and it's a new thread.

Cosmic.

3 retentionguy  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:04:48pm

Daniel Pipes is on H&C right now talking about radical Islam, just as I read this post. Cosmic indeed!

Don't need to watch it. It was the Jooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooos fault.

5 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:04:54pm

I'm not on the Pipes email list, but about two weeks ago he sent around this email (which was forwarded to me by IDFDave) predicting this very outcome:

for those of you in southern California, I will be speaking shortly at the University of California-Irvine, one of the country's more problematic campuses, and would welcome some friendly faces in the audience.

I guess not too many "friendly faces" turned up!

6 new2thezoo  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:05:18pm

Looks like they pulled it.

Free speech for these Muslim students means their speech and only their speech.

8 Bubbaman  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:06:18pm

Charles, I was hoping that you were planning to include a link to the incident this past weekend at The University of Michigan where three ex-terrorists including Walid Shoebat were shouted down by protesters.

9 new2thezoo  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:06:25pm

Sorry, that's incorrect... a glich in my puter.

Neither of the links work for the videos?

12 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:07:24pm

I just regret that I hadn't figured out how to use the "video" setting on my camera when I recorded the insanity at the Pipes event almost exactly three years ago way back in 2004:

Daniel Pipes at Berkeley, Feb 10, 2004

If I had videoed the "hate tunnel" and the anti-Semitic jibes, it would have been a classic.

13 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:08:41pm

Charles, the embedded Google video ain't working for me either.

Overloaded? Dunno.

14 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:09:45pm

In fact, as others reported above, NONE of the Google video links are workin' for me.

15 Yank in the EU  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:10:20pm

Hmmm, video's aren't loading for me. Can anybody describe what the disruption was like?

21 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:12:46pm

OK, finally got the longer Google video link to work.

For those that can't view it, the first two minutes is Muslim students filing out of the auditorium by the hundreds all shouting in unison, "Anti-Israel! Anti-oppression! Anti-Israel! Anti-oppression!"

That's actually not too different from what happened at Berkeley.

22 Kreuzueber Halbmond  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:12:55pm

Let's go into their mosque and shout down their imam in the name of freedom of speech.

29 jordash1212  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:15:45pm

Seems like the club walked up the stairs of a lecture hall and chanted "Anti-Oppression! Anti-Israel!" They were too much of pussies to turn around and say it to the remaining crowd or Daniel Pipes.
This drives sh!t makes me want to drive off a cliff.

Columbia University made virtual heros of their little pet fascist thugs that disrupted and ended the speaking engagement of leaders of Minuteman group who were invited to speak on campus. Columbia's tacit support for the ugly incident included tacit support for the hurling of racial epithets at one of the Minuteman guests who is Afro-American. The hypocrisy of liberals is unbounded.

I suspect that UC Irvine will do the same for their fascist thugs as well.

PERSPECTIVE

Every loss of a soldier's life is tragic, but consider the facts...

In 2006 some 821 American Soldiers were killed or died in Iraq.

In comparison, in New York City, some 266 people were murdered. That's the number for one city alone. If one considers NYC, L.A., Detroit, and Washington D.C. the number of homicides in 2006 were 850! More people were murdered in those four cities than soldiers who died in Iraq last year.

Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Jane Fonda, Code Pink et al, had no problem rallying thousands of loons across the country to protest the War and the deaths of US troops, but these self-professed liberal wackadoos can't seem to do anything about the war in U.S. cities.

U.S. out of urban centers now!

48 zombie  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 4:24:52pm

The cameraperson shows the Muslims trailing away into the night across campus after they left the lecture.

This is actually an improvement. At Berkeley three years ago, they waited outside and then pounced on the remaining pro-Israel attendees when they later exited, creating a "hate tunnel" where they were shouting epithets at the Jews who had to run the gantlet.

Things are on the upswing here in California!

I heard a very good hour (ca.) of radio on Prager's show today.

An Egyption woman, Nonie Darwish, speaks about how she came to realize the insanity of anti-Israel and anti-Semitic indoctrination in the Arab Middle East.

She wrote "Now They Call Me Infidel; Why I Renounced Jihad for America, Israel, and the War on Terror."

At one point, she said that they polled Egyptian people on the major cause of problems in their life -- 93% answered "Israel."

Like Thomas Jefferson said: The time for the Second Amendment is when they try to take it away.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if they are foolish enough to try to take our guns away from us there will be a civil war. No doubt in my mind whatsoever. I am a proud American, and I value freedom above all else. But I will go down fighting before I surrender. Walter Williams said it best: "When they have Williams' guns you will know that Williams is dead." There are a hell of a lot of people out here who think like Walter Williams. When Pipes came to UPenn the Muslim students all sat in the front aisle giving him the evil stare, but at least they were quiet. I was expecting far worse and I had my "Zombiecam" with me but all I got in terms of photos was a bunch of girls in Burkas. The Penn girls out side were rushing their sororities-- they definitely were having lots more fun.

Perhaps the Pipes episode would qualify for "Burkas gone wild."

Remember, the "Shot heard 'round the world" referred to Lexington and Concord in 1775 when the Brits went to confiscate the powder and arms from the colonials. The colonials gave them the business end of their arms. There are enough American patriots still breathing here who will do the same thing if it ever came to that. Why do you think private gun ownership terrifies the libs so much? Because the libs know that guns in the hands of the American people is the ONLY thing keeping the left from realizing its marxist goals.

A "moderate moslem" in Britain, who wasx often on the airwaves as a so-called "voice of reason," was quite candid about "moderate moslems": He said that once they're inside the mosque there ARE no moderate moslems. Hell, the elusive "moderate moslem" is an apostate if he's anything, and according to islam he must be killed. Such a moderate movement, islam.

I know, I've heard all the arguments before but they do exist whether or not you acknowledge them. Listening through Pipes' intelligent, insightful, comments and the troglodytes shouting INSIDE the auditorium makes it tempting to tune out before we get to the really scary part. Only after the fifth column marches out of the room do we hear one of them railing about continuing their jihad within America while their brothers the terrorists continue their murderous rampages overseas until Israel is destroyed.
His convincingly American accent is chilling too.

138 EE  Thu, Feb 1, 2007 5:39:34pm

When the disrupters moved outside, their speaker told them that Israel will disappear. That was what the crowd of disrupters wanted to hear.

During the disruption inside the lecture room, when the disrupters were leaving, they were shouting "anti-Israel". The meaning of that became clearer when they got outside and their speaker mentioned that Israel will disappear. There cannot be a compromise with that mentality. One cannot expect good things to happen with concessions to that mentality. No good can come from appeasing that mentality.

No change of mentality has occurred since Haj Amin al Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem, said in 1948:

I declare a holy war, my Moslem brothers! Murder the Jews! Murder them all!

The Muslim Student Association, a Wahhabi-funded and Wahhabi-ideology organization, which spearheads the disruptions on campus, has accepted the Mufti's charge, and wants only the destruction of Israel.

The speaker outside, talking to the disrupters that he is in charge of, announced that they had harmed the morale of the Jews. But actually they did not harm anyone's morale who listened to Dr. Daniel Pipes that evening. They only made it clear that it would be futile to seek any kind of compromise with this sort of mentality.

Hubby and I were discussing "moderate Muslims" just last night. I've dedided that there is too much at stake to make any mistakes -- so, if someone says they are a "moderate Muslim" they have to prove it to me -- In other words, in my world, all Muslims are suspect until proven otherwise. And I mean real proof, actions -- words are cheap. Get out there and demonstrate against your radical brothers/sisters -- write -- be willing to take risks. I am not comfortable feeling this way, but the stakes are too high, the matter is too important. I'm willing to entertain other approaches, but for now this is the best I can do.

The disruptors seem to have much in common with liberals and the anti-war crowd. Like children, if they don't get their way or have complete agreement with their ideas they throw their little tantrums. This can involve painting the capital steps, hanging people in effigy, burning flags, spitting on soldiers, or merely shouting down anyone that disagrees with them. They will in fact go out of their way merely to disrupt anyone that disagrees with their message. Rarely will they resort to civil discourse.

Here's Reut Cohen's description of the event (she posted the video):

Daniel Pipes gave a lecture at UCI on January 31. Pipes discussed the fate of Israel and the threat of fundamentalism. I will post more regarding the actual lecture later today or tomorrow. However, my academics has to be my priority. I did, nonetheless, want to post a little bit of the lecture and MSU protest of the program.

In the following clip, starting at around five minutes and forty seconds, members of UC Irvine's Muslim Student Union (MSU) begin to protest Daniel Pipes.

I actually went outside to hear what the MSU had to say regarding the event. Not only did I get a personal 'shout out’ and very strange acknowledgement from the MSU, but I distinctly heard MSU members/leaders state that Israel will soon be wiped off the earth and that Zionist students have no future. They also clearly identified with the way their “brothers” are doing things overseas. Nice.

You seriously won't see or hear this anywhere else because I was the only one out there with the mob.

I apologize that the sound quality isn’t the best, but I'm sure you will still be able to discern what is going on.

Stop these filthy animals!

I spent a few days in London in 1980, and took a walk over to Speakers Corner in Hyde Park. I remember a smart, young English guy ( probably Jewish ) speaking about all sorts of subjects, and one of his speeches was defending Israel.

Then an PLO supporter got up on a soapbox and started mouthing the usual witless litany of "oppression, occupation, legitmate struggle against the Zionist...blah, blah". After a while, he stepped down because he obviously lacked the wit to respond to the clever comments peppering him from
the crowd.

The difference here was that noone was "shouting him down". He could have kept going, but was simply unarmed in a battle of wits.

There was no threat of violence anywhere. Just simple debate. A battle of reason.

I remember thinking what a miracle it was that England could support such a non-violent meetingplace for an exchange of views.

Little did I know that we we wind up with the England of
Islamo-bombers and beheaders we have now.

Free speech for these Muslim students means their speech and only their speech.

Yet another way in which Islamiacs and libscum are indistinguishable...

Muslims and the lefties go together like peanut butter and jelly. Freedom of expression means their expression and their expression alone.

Isn't it about time we begin to fight fire with fire?

193 jwbaumann  Fri, Feb 2, 2007 5:48:46am

Why are these students not expelled for these thuggish actions? Doesn't UC Irvine have a student code of conduct? If they are not students, why are they not charged with disorderly conduct? If the University admins won't step up, fire their sorry asses.

I would love to see Sheriff Joe Arpaio as a University Chancellor.

Ok, so at what point did disrupting a speaker and shouting them down become "freedom of speech" as opposed to "ignorant, malicious, ashattery"?

Nothing like exercising your freedom of speech (ironic since islam doesn't allow this) to trample somebody else's freedom of speech.

F**k islam, f**k Allah. I am so akhbar.

If these same people resisted in the Middle East against Islam they would be tortured....

In the words of FALLACI (pbuh):
"...it is easy to pose as a warrior in a regime of freedom and democracy...It's easy to play the revolutionary when at a trial the judges question courteously and the lawyers defend solicitously ...It's easy to side with the enemy when the harshest punishment you receive for this betrayal is a cell provided with bed and blankets and sheets and washbasin and watercloset and running water and electricity and books to read or paper to write on. A prison where you choose what to eat as if it were in a restaurant, halal meat if you're a Muslim, and where you can make telephone calls. You can watch television, receive visitors, etcetera. ...Yes, it's easy. And convenient and cowardly."

RE: the "Hate Tunnel"

is that what these people live for ?

The Israeli Bus display incident was also telling.

If all the people in the Bay Area who have been victims of Muslim Violence hatred and piracy in History, the Armenians who fled the Turkish Genocide, the Arab Christians, Lebanese Christians, Egyptian Copts, Syrian and Iranian Christians (and all guys like me who's ancestors fought in the Crusades) PLUS the large Jewish community,

Acted like this ...

The Governor would have to call up the National Guard permanently to protect the Muslim Arabs, Iranians Muslim Lebanese, and very large SF Palestinian Community.

The Balkanization of the Bay area, and other parts of California is being attempted by the Muslims.

We are finally starting to see the fire being fought back. There's a bunch of brave students who have decided enough is enough - hence Daniel Pipes and others.

Meanwhile, if you want to help out on the legal front:
The Zionist Organization of America is paying out of its own pocket for Susan Tuchman to continue to press the US Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights to complete its now 2.5-year-long investigation into the alleged violation of the civil rights of students of Jewish descent at UCI.

If you'd like to help, please send donations to the Zionist Organization of America: Donation Link

StandWithUs has an Orange County division that's supporting the students any way they can: bearing witness at anti-Semitic events (complete with huge posters), helping organize events, and they're now embarking on an education campaign. Support them any way you can: Link

Finally, I also know that the American Jewish Congress is working another legal angle, but I don't know the details. Donation Link

btw looks like Gavin Newsom's Personal Life troubles is news item #1.

ahhhh Schadenfreund, is a temptation here, but all these poor people have their personal pecadillo's, and betrayals aired in those lovely San Francisco papers, you've got to feel sorry for them for that -- to have the King of pecadillos Willy Brown commenting on your personal life affecting your re-election, ..... Yeeutxsch.

Fox probably won't ask Gavin's EX to comment but FOX's rivals we be on her like red meat in 5, 4, 3, 2 ......

At Berkeley three years ago, they waited outside and then pounced on the remaining pro-Israel attendees when they later exited, creating a "hate tunnel" where they were shouting epithets at the Jews who had to run the gantlet.

This tactic was also used when Benjamin Netanyahu came to Winnipeg on the same tour as the Concordia Riot.

Am Israel Chai was the best possible response. Also Dar Al Ub I liked your chant. Will keep it mind for the futre if required.

Zombie, in my opinion it's only a matter of time before gunfire erupts at one of these.

And it will be the fault of the college administrators who do nothing.

Zombie,

Many thanks for your tireless exposing of the vomitude on the left and in radical islam. As an Orange County resident, only a few miles from UCI, I think employment of your tactics is necessary to combat these thugs. I'm now paying attention. I didn't think this shit could happen here....

You asked who are the militant Paliphiles on the UCI faculty. The two most prominent ones are Mark Levine LeVine, a self hating Jewish Professor and Lina Kreide, a Lebanese. LeVine proclaimed on national TV that it was the IDF that really started the War in Lebanon because the Hezbollah only retaliated against a raid the previous day by the IDF when the IDF tried to kidnap a Hezbollah militant. (!) Only the Hezbollah (at the time) and Mark LeVine adopted that position. I think Hezbollah abandoned it but I don't know about LeVine.

Most recently the two supported at a symposium the kakamame LeVine notion that Israel were the real murderers of Pierre Gamayel http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mark-levine/who-kill ed-pierre-gemayel_b_34797.html
because Israel had the most to gain. No evidence at all, just his analysis of the situation was enough for him to pass along and no doubt teach UCI students that Israel was to blame. Same evidence the Muslim world has about the 9/11 attack: Who stands to gain from all this negative reaction to Muslim attacks? ISRAEL!

There are a number of facts that combine to make UCI the perfect storm, starting with an administration (Chancellor Drake & Vice Chancellor Gomez) that wraps itself in the Freedom of Speech flag and hears, sees, and speaks no evil. Notwithstanding the fact that the ONLY hate speech and speakers on the UCI campus are anti-Semitic, anti-Israel, and anti-American ones.

Next is a very largely Leftist entire faculty that largely supports the Palestinians, no matter what. The cirriculum and text books are, in many cases, revisionist history about the formation of Israel and its legitimacy. They turn out scores of anti-Semites each year. Combined with the annual campus Hate Israel week with its hate speeches at UCI sponsored by the Muslim Student Union and sanctioned by the UCI administration, it creates a really bad situation.

Most tragic of all is that UCI has two very large Jewish benefactors (Paul Merage and Henry Samueli) that don't seem to care what use UCI puts to their 10 figure donations as long as they get their names on the buildings and programs. They are from the Jimmy Carter end of the Jewish community spectrum.

You asked for names ... now what?

209 ex cathedra  Fri, Feb 2, 2007 3:33:05pm

ConcernedUCIstudent, Miggie, thank you both!

I already checked out LeVine's blog (what's this spelling of the name, btw - is he Fwench or Jewish?). What a sick, sick individual! I hope he gets his comeuppance one of these days.

I remember myself and one of my Jewish professors walk past the anti-zionism group of posters and him mutter under his breath: "anti-zionism? More like antisemitism."

I think some Jewish professors need to be mobilized there.

Btw, I remember many years ago, when I was an undergraduate, I used to see muslim women in hijabs washing their feet in the sinks in the women's bathrooms. I though it was absolutely gross. Now many years have passed, and I find out why they do it by reading Little Green Footballs. The "mystery" is solved.

He is a despicable traitor who was born Jewish. I suppose you remain technically Jewish even if you betray your own people. He must belive his Jewish anti-Semitism gives him some aura of majestic scholarly impartiality. Actually he is a foolish tool of Muslim extremists. If Jews could excommunicate someone, he would be a top candidate. I wish he would convert so there would be no question about his duplicity.

Oh, I know the type very well! Have met quite a few of them in my days - some at UCI. Argh! I need a vomiting smiley. He didn't look Jewish on his photograph, so I was unsure. But the brown shirt he is wearing in the picture is very appropriate.

BTW, I don't know if you have heard about a scary Jewish curse called "Pulsa Denura". Ten Orthodox Jewish men can put it on a Jewish person only (supposedly, it doesn't work with gentiles) and only for the most heinous crime imaginable in the eyes of the Jewish God - the betrayal of the Jewish people. This is supposedly what put Sharon into a coma after he had given away Gaza. OK, I am an educated person and not superstitious, but they say it works every time. (A cackling smiley face). Maybe I should find me some Orthodox Jews and put them on his trail.

My Talk at the University of California-Irvine

February 1, 2007

My talk last night at the University of California-Irvine, on the topic of "The Threat to Israel's Existence," was disrupted just over 15 minutes into my lecture by what appear to be goons of an Islamist persuasion. Three videos on the internet document my remarks, then their response:

*

(anonymous) covers all 53:29 minutes of my talk, from beginning to end. The disruption begins at 15:09 with the calling out of my name. I resume speaking at 17:25.
* (posted by Reut Cohen) offers 5:42 minutes of me, then the disruption, and follows the disrupters outside as they chant "anti-Israel" in conjunction with other slogans, such as "anti-oppression," "anti-racism," and "anti-hate." At one point, at 12:00, the leader predicts that "it's just a matter of time before the State of Israel will be wiped off the face of the map," in response to which the crowd, self-exiled, standing in the dark and the cold, yelled out "Takbir" and "Allahu Akbar." In response, those who remained in the auditorium chanted "Am Yisrael Chai."
*

(anonymous) starts with the disruption, then jumps several minutes my replies to questions. For the wonderful standing ovation that followed on my conclusion, go to the 32:48 minute mark.

Michael A. Baker provides an account of the evening at "Daniel Pipes – in The Arena at UC Irvine." For reactions to the videos, see those at LittleGreenFootballs.com and JihadWatch.org.

Comments:

(1) I had been forewarned that such a staged exit was in the works, so I frontloaded my comments, to insure that the Islamist contingent got a full dose of my thinking; specifically.

(2) This is the first campus disruption I have experienced in nearly two years, since the Rochester Institute of Technology in April 2005. I don't know if it's the specifically awful environment at UCI (what one of the chaplains terms a place where "hate and bigotry grow and spread like a cancer") or the moment we are in that accounts for this particular agitation; I tend to think the former factor counts most.
(3) I second the observation by "waterdragon52" posted at JihadWatch.org: "All these thugs have managed to do is to prove Pipes's thesis that we are witnessing a crash between civilization and barbarism" – a reference to my recent talk in London, "Radical Islam vs. Civilization." (February 1, 2006)
